We consider the Löwner differential equation generating univalent self-maps of the unit disk (or of the upper half-plane). If the solution to this equation represents a one-slit map, then the driving term is a continuous function. The reverse statement is not true in general as a famous Kufarev's example shows. We address the following main problem: to find a criterium for the Löwner equation to generate one-slit solutions. New examples of non-slit solutions to the Löwner equation are presented. Properties of singular slit solutions are revealed.
We consider the Loewner differential equation generating univalent maps of the unit disk (or of the upper half-plane) onto itself minus a single slit. We prove that the circular slits, tangent to the real axis are generated by Hölder continuous driving terms with exponent 1/3 in the Loewner equation. Singular solutions are described, and the critical value of the norm of driving terms generating quasisymmetric slits in the disk is obtained.
We prove that any disjoint union of finitely many simple curves in the upper half-plane can be generated in a unique way by the chordal multiple-slit Loewner equation with constant weights.
The paper is devoted to the multiple chordal Loewner differential equation with different driving functions on two time intervals. We obtain exact implicit or explicit solutions to the Loewner equations with piecewise constant driving functions and with combined constant and square root driving functions. In both cases, there is an analytical and geometrical description of generated traces.
We prove that for every $C>0$ there exists a driving function $U:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}$ such that the corresponding chordal Loewner-Kufarev equation generates a quasislit and $ \limsup_{h\downarrow0}\frac{|U(1)-U(1-h)|}{\sqrt{h}}=C. $
Consider the Loewner equation associated to the upper-half plane. Normally this equation is driven by a real-valued function. In this paper, we show that when the driving function is complex-valued with small $1/2$-Hölder norm, the corresponding hull is a quasi-arc, hence is a simple curve. We also study how the hull changes with respect to complex parameters and make a connection between Loewner equation and complex dynamics.
We describe the region $\mathcal{V}(z_0)$ of values of $f(z_0)$ for all normalized bounded univalent functions $f$ in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ at a fixed point $z_0 \in \mathbb{D}$. The proof is based on identifying $\mathcal{V}(z_0)$ as the reachable set of the radial Loewner differential equation. We also prove an analogous result for the upper half-plane using the chordal Loewner equation.
D. Marshall and S. Rohde have recently shown that there exists $C_0 >0$ so that the Loewner equation generates slits whenever the driving term is Hölder continuous with exponent 1/2 and norm less than $C_0$. In this paper, we show that the maximal value for $C_0$ is 4.
Kager, Nienhuis, and Kadanoff conjectured that the hull generated from the Loewner equation driven by two constant functions with constant weights could be generated by a single rapidly and randomly oscillating function. We prove their conjecture and generalize to multiple continuous driving functions. In the process, we generalize to multiple hulls a result of Roth and Schleissinger that says multiple slits can be generated by constant weight functions. The proof gives a simulation method for hulls generated by the multiple Loewner equation.
The radial Komatu-Loewner equation is a differential equation for certain normalized conformal mappings that can be used to describe the growth of slits within multiply connected domains. We show that it is possible to choose constant coefficients in this equation in order to generate given disjoint slits and that those coefficients are uniquely determined under a suitable normalization of the differential equation.
We give a generalization of the Komatu-Loewner equation to multiple slits. Therefore, we consider an $n$-connected circular slit disk $Ω$ as our initial domain minus $m\in \mathbb{N}$ disjoint, simple and continuous curves that grow from the outer boundary $\partial \mathbb{D}$ of $Ω$ into the interior. Consequently we get a decreasing family $(Ω_t)_{t\in[0,T]}$ of domains with $Ω_0=Ω$. We will prove that the corresponding Riemann mapping functions $g_t$ from $Ω_t$ onto a circular slit disk, which are normalized by $g_t(0)=0$ and $g_t'(0)>0$, satisfy a Loewner equation known as the Komatu-Loew…
We find a solution to the Loewner chain equation in the case when the infinitesimal generator satisfies h(0,t)=0, Dh(0,t)=A for any linear operator with m(A)>0. We also study the related classes of spirallike mappings, mappings with parametric representation and asymptotically spirallike mappings.
In this paper we develop a variational method for the Loewner equation in higher dimensions. As a result we obtain a version of Pontryagin's maximum principle from optimal control theory for the Loewner equation in several complex variables. Based on recent work of Arosio, Bracci and Wold we then apply our version of the Pontryagin maximum principle to obtain first--order necessary conditions for the extremal functions for a wide class of extremal problems over the set of normalized biholomorphic mappings on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$.
We characterize infinitesimal generators on complete hyperbolic complex manifolds without any regularity assumption on the Kobayashi distance. This allows to prove a general Loewner type equation with regularity of any order $d\in [1,+\infty ]$. Finally, based on these results, we focus on some open problems naturally arising.
We obtain a first order differential equation for the driving function of the chordal Loewner differential equation in the case where the domain is slit by a curve which is a trajectory arc of certain quadratic differentials. In particular this includes the case when the curve is a path on the square, triangle or hexagonal lattice in the upper halfplane or, indeed, in any domain with boundary on the lattice. We also demonstrate how we use this to calculate the driving function numerically. Equivalent results for other variants of the Loewner differential equation are also obtained: Multiple sl…
The aim of this survey paper is to present a complete direct proof of the well celebrated cornerstone result in Loewner Theory, originally due to Kufarev et al [Trudy Tomsk. Gos. Univ. Ser. Meh.-Mat. 200 (1968) 142-164. MR0257336 (41 #1987)], stating that the family of the hydrodynamically normalized conformal self-maps of the upper-half plane onto the complement of a gradually erased slit satisfies, under a suitable parametrization, the chordal Loewner differential equation. The proof is based solely on basic theorems of Geometric Function Theory combined with some elementary topological fact…
The Loewner equation describes the time development of an analytic map into the upper half of the complex plane in the presence of a "forcing", a defined singularity moving around the real axis. The applications of this equation use the trace, the locus of singularities in the upper half plane. This note discusses the structure of the trace for the case in which the forcing function, xi(t), is proportional to (-t)^beta with beta in the interval (0, 1/2). In this case, the trace is a simple curve, gamma(t), which touches the real axis twice. It is computed by using matched asymptotic analysis t…
We consider the chordal Loewner differential equation for multiple slits in the upper half-plane and relations between the pointwise Hölder continuity of the driving functions and the generated hulls. The first result generalizes a result of Lind that gives a sufficient condition for driving functions to generate simple curves. The second result translates the property that the hulls locally look like straight lines at their starting points into a condition for the driving functions.
Through the Loewner equation, real-valued driving functions generate sets called Loewner hulls. We analyze driving functions that approach 0 at least as fast as $a (T-t)^r$ as $t \to T$, where $r \in (0, 1/2)$, and show that the corresponding Loewner hulls have tangential behavior at time $T$. We also prove a result about trace existence and apply it to show that the Loewner hulls driven by $a(T-t)^r$ for $r \in (0,1/2)$ have a tangential trace curve.
In this paper, we show that the chordal Loewner differential equation with $C^β$ driving function generates a $C^{β+ 1/2}$ slit for $1/2 < β\leq 2$, except when $β= 3/2$ the slit is only proved to be weakly $C^{1,1}$.
In [5], O. Bauer interpreted the chordal Loewner equation in terms of non-commutative probability theory. We follow this perspective and identify the chordal Loewner equations as the non-autonomous versions of evolution equations for semigroups in monotone and anti-monotone probability theory. We also look at the corresponding equation for free probability theory.
The Loewner equation encrypts a growing simple curve in the plane into a real-valued driving function. We show that if the driving function $λ$ is in $C^β$ with $β>2$ (or real analytic) then the Loewner curve is in $C^{β+ \frac{1}{2}}$ (respectively analytic). This is a converse to a result by Earle and Epstein and extends a result of Wong.
We consider evolution in the unit disk in which the sample paths are represented by the trajectories of points evolving randomly under the generalized Loewner equation. The driving mechanism differs from the SLE evolution, but nevertheless solutions possess similar invariance properties.
In part 1 (Chapter 2) we present the basic notions of Loewner theory. Here we use a modern form which was developed by F. Bracci, M. Contreras, S. Díaz-Madrigal et al. and which can be applied to certain higher dimensional complex manifolds. We look at two domains in more detail: the Euclidean unit ball and the polydisc. Here we consider two classes of biholomorphic mappings which were introduced by T. Poreda and G. Kohr as generalizations of the class S and we prove a conjecture about support points of these classes. In part 2 (Chapter 3) we consider one special Loewner equation: the chordal …
In this paper we introduce a general version of the Loewner differential equation which allows us to present a new and unified treatment of both the radial equation introduced in 1923 by K. Loewner and the chordal equation introduced in 2000 by O. Schramm. In particular, we prove that evolution families in the unit disc are in one to one correspondence with solutions to this new type of Loewner equations. Also, we give a Berkson-Porta type formula for non-autonomous weak holomorphic vector fields which generate such Loewner differential equations and study in detail geometric and dynamical pro…
Let $γ_1,γ_2:[0,T]\to \overline{\mathbb{D}}\setminus\{0\}$ be parametrizations of two slits $Γ_1:=γ(0,T], Γ_2=γ_2(0,T]$ such that $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ are disjoint. \\ Let $g_t$ to be the unique normalized conformal mapping from $\mathbb{D}\setminus (γ_1[0,t]\cup γ_2[0,t])$ onto $\mathbb{D}$ with $g_t(0)=0,$ $g'_t(0)>0$. Furthermore, for $k=1,2$, denote by $h_{k;t}$ the unique normalized conformal mapping from $\mathbb{D}\setminus γ_k[0,t]$ onto $\mathbb{D}$ with $h_{k;t}(0)=0,$ ${h'_{k;t}(0)}>0$.\\ Loewner's famous theorem (\cite{Loewner:1923}) can be stated in the following way: The function $t\m…
We consider a value range $\{g(i,T)\}$ of solutions to the chordal Loewner equation with the restriction $|λ(t)| \le c$ on the driving function. We use reachable set methods and the Pontryagin maximum principle.
We prove that evolution families on complex complete hyperbolic manifolds are in one to one correspondence with certain semicomplete non-autonomous holomorphic vector fields, providing the solution to a very general Loewner type differential equation on manifolds.
We consider multiple radial SLE as the number of curves tends to infinity. We give conditions that imply the tightness of the associated processes given by the Loewner equation. In the case of equal weights, the infinite-slit limit is described by a Loewner equation whose Herglotz vector field is given by a Burgers differential equation. Furthermore, we investigate a more general form of the Burgers equation. On the one hand, it appears in connection with semigroups of probability measures on the unit circle with respect to free convolution. On the other hand, the Burgers equation itself is al…
We prove that given a Herglotz vector field on the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$ of the form $H(z,t)=(a_1 z_1,...,a_n z_n)+O(|z|^2)$ with $\Re a_j<0$ for all $j$, its evolution family admits an associated Loewner chain, which is normal if no real resonances occur. Hence the Loewner-Kufarev PDE admits a solution defined for all positive times.
In this paper, we discuss the chordal Komatu-Loewner equation on standard slit domains in a manner applicable not just to a simple curve but also a family of continuously growing hulls. Especially a conformally invariant characterization of the Komatu-Loewner evolution is obtained. As an application, we prove a sort of conformal invariance, or locality, of the stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolution $\mathrm{SKLE}_{\sqrt{6}, -b_{\mathrm{BMD}}}$ in a fully general setting, which solves an open problem posed by Chen, Fukushima and Suzuki [Stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolutions and SLEs, Stoch. Proc. A…
We regard a certain type of Loewner's differential equation from a quantum probability point of view and approximate the underlying quantum process by the adjacency matrices of growing graphs which arise from the comb product of certain spidernets.
Let $λ:[0,+\infty)\mapsto\mathbb{R}$ be the driving function of a chordal Loewner process. In this paper we find new conditions on $λ$ which imply that the process is generated by a simple curve. This result improves former one by Lind ,Marshall and Rhode, and it particular gives new results about the case $λ(t)=cW_b(t)$, $W_b$ being a Hölder-$1/2$ Weierstrass function. In the second part we find new conditions on $λ$ implying that the process is generated by a curve. The main tool here is a duality relation between the real part and the imaginary part of the Loewner equation.
In this note we consider a multi-slit Loewner equation with constant coefficients that describes the growth of multiple SLE curves connecting $N$ points on $\mathbb{R}$ to infinity within the upper half-plane. For every $N\in\mathbb{N}$, this equation provides a measure valued process $t\mapsto \{α_{N,t}\},$ and we are interested in the limit behaviour as $N\to\infty.$ We prove tightness of the sequence $\{α_{N,t}\}_{N\in\mathbb{N}}$ under certain assumptions and address some further problems.
The theory of formal power series and derivation is developed from the point of view of the power matrix. A Loewner equation for formal power series is introduced. We then show that the matrix exponential is surjective onto the group of power matrices, and the coefficients are entire functions of finitely many coefficients of the infinitesimal generator. Furthermore coefficients of the solution to the Loewner equation with constant infinitesimal generator can be obtained by exponentiating an infinitesimal power matrix. We also use the formal Loewner equations to investigate the relation betwee…
A new approach in Loewner Theory proposed by Bracci, Contreras, Díaz-Madrigal and Gumenyuk provides a unified treatment of the radial and the chordal versions of the Loewner equations. In this framework, a generalized Loewner chain satisfies the differential equation $$ \partial_{t}f_{t}(z) = (z - τ(t))(1-\overline{τ(t)}z)\partial_{z}f_{t}(z)p(z,t), $$ where $τ: [0,\infty) \to \overline{\mathbb{D}}$ is measurable and $p$ is called a Herglotz function. In this paper, we will show that if there exists a $k \in [0,1)$ such that $p$ satisfies $$ |p(z,t) - 1| \leq k |p(z,t) + 1| $$ for all $z \in \…
Similar to the well-known phases of SLE, the Loewner differential equation with Lip(1/2) driving terms is known to have a phase transition at norm 4, when traces change from simple to non-simple curves. We establish the deterministic analog of the second phase transition of SLE, where traces change to space-filling curves: There is a constant C>4 such that a Loewner driving term whose trace is space filling has Lip(1/2) norm at least C. We also provide a geometric criterion for traces to be driven by Lip(1/2) functions, and show that for instance the Hilbert space filling curve and the Sierpin…
In addition to conformal weldings $φ$, simple curves $γ$ growing in the upper half plane generate driving functions $ξ$ and hitting times $τ$ through Loewner's differential equation. While the Loewner transform $γ\mapsto ξ$ and its inverse $ξ\mapsto γ$ have been carefully examined, less attention has been paid to the maps $ξ\mapsto τ\mapsto φ$. We study their continuity properties and show that uniform driver convergence implies uniform hitting time convergence and uniform welding convergence, even when the corresponding curves do not converge. Welding convergence implies neither hitting time …
We prove that any Loewner PDE whose driving term h(z,t) vanishes at the origin, and satisfies the bunching condition r m(Dh(0,t))\geq k(Dh(0,t)) for some r\in R^+, admits a solution given by univalent mappings (f_t: B^q\to C^q). This is done by discretizing time and considering the abstract basin of attraction. If r<2, then the union of the images f_t(\B^q) of a such solution is biholomorphic to C^q.
This paper studies the behavior of solutions near the explosion time to the chordal Komatu-Loewner equation for slits, motivated by the preceding studies by Bauer and Friedrich (2008) and by Chen and Fukushima (2018). The solution to this equation represents moving slits in the upper half-plane. We show that the distance between the slits and driving function converges to zero at its explosion time. We also prove a probabilistic version of this asymptotic behavior for stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolutions under some natural assumptions.
The Loewner equation is known as a one-dimensional reduction of the Benney chain as well as the dispersionless KP hierarchy. We propose a reverse process showing that time splitting in the Loewner or the Loewner-Kufarev equation leads to some known integrable systems.
We prove that, on a complete hyperbolic domain D\subset C^q, any Loewner PDE associated with a Herglotz vector field of the form H(z,t)=A(z)+O(|z|^2), where the eigenvalues of A have strictly negative real part, admits a solution given by a family of univalent mappings (f_t: D\to C^q) such that the union of the images f_t(D) is the whole C^q. If no real resonance occurs among the eigenvalues of A, then the family (e^{At}\circ f_t) is uniformly bounded in a neighborhood of the origin. We also give a generalization of Pommerenke's univalence criterion on complete hyperbolic domains.
We prove that a solution to the $ω$-controlled Loewner-Kufarev equation, which was introduced by the first two authors, exists uniquely, is univalent and starlike on the unit disk and can be extended holomorphically across the unit circle.
Excursion reflected Brownian motion (ERBM) is a strong Markov process defined in a finitely connected domain $D \subset \C$ that behaves like a Brownian motion away from the boundary of $D$ and picks a point according to harmonic measure from infinity to reflect from every time it hits a boundary component. We give a new construction of ERBM using its conformal invariance and discuss the relationship between the Poisson kernel and Green's function for ERBM and conformal maps into certain classes of finitely connected domains. One important reason for studying ERBM is the hope that it will be a…
We revisit the convergence of loop-erased random walk, LERW, to SLE(2) when the curves are parametrized by capacity. We construct a coupling of the chordal version of LERW and chordal SLE(2) based on the Green's function for LERW as martingale observable and using an elementary discrete-time Loewner "difference" equation. This coupling is different than the ones previously considered in this context. Our recent work (arXiv:1603.05203) on the convergence of LERW parametrized by length to SLE(2) parameterized by Minkowski content uses specific features of the coupling constructed here.
This paper defines the notion of generators for a class of decreasing radial Loewner chains which are only continuous with respect to time. For this purpose, "Loewner's integral equation" which generalizes Loewner's differential equation is defined and analyzed. The definition of generators is motivated by the Lévy-Khintchine representation for additive processes on the unit circle. Actually, we can and do introduce a homeomorphism between the above class of Loewner chains and the set of the distributions of increments of additive processes equipped with suitable topologies. On the other hand,…
Loewner Theory, based on dynamical viewpoint, is a powerful tool in Complex Analysis, which plays a crucial role in such important achievements as the proof of famous Bieberbach's conjecture and well-celebrated Schramm's Stochastic Loewner Evolution (SLE). Recently Bracci et al [Bracci et al, to appear in J. Reine Angew. Math. Available on ArXiv 0807.1594; Bracci et al, Math. Ann. 344(2009), 947--962; Contreras et al, Revista Matematica Iberoamericana 26(2010), 975--1012] have proposed a new approach bringing together all the variants of the (deterministic) Loewner Evolution in a simply connec…
In this paper we introduce a general version of the notion of Loewner chains which comes from the new and unified treatment, given in [arXiv:0807.1594], of the radial and chordal variant of the Loewner differential equation, which is of special interest in geometric function theory as well as for various developments it has given rise to, including the famous Schramm-Loewner evolution. In this very general setting, we establish a deep correspondence between these chains and the evolution families introduced in [arXiv:0807.1594]. Among other things, we show that, up to a Riemann map, such a cor…
Among diversity of frameworks and constructions introduced in Loewner Theory by different authors, one can distinguish two closely related but still different ways of reasoning, which colloquially may be described as "increasing" and "decreasing". In this paper we review in short the main types of (deterministic) Loewner evolution discussed in the literature and describe in detail the local duality between "increasing" and "decreasing" cases within the general unifying approach in Loewner Theory proposed recently in [Bracci et al. to appear in J Reine Angew Math; arXiv:0807.1594v1], [Bracci et…
A quasislit is the image of a vertical line segment [0, iy], y > 0, under a quasiconformal homeomorphism of the upper half-plane fixing infinity. Quasislits correspond precisely to curves generated by the Loewner equation with a driving function in the Lip-1/2 class. It is known that a quasislit is contained in a cone depending only on its Loewner driving function Lip-1/2 seminorm, s. In this note we use the Loewner equation to give quantitative estimates on the opening angle of this cone in the full range s <4. The estimate is shown to be sharp for small s. As consequences, we derive explicit…
The Loewner equation provides a correspondence between continuous real-valued functions $λ_t$ and certain increasing families of half-plane hulls $K_t$. In this paper we study the deterministic relationship between specific analytic properties of $λ_t$ and geometric properties of $K_t$. Our motivation comes, however, from the stochastic Loewner equation (SLE$_κ$), where the associated function $λ_t$ is a scaled Brownian motion and the corresponding domains $\mathbb{H} \backslash K_t$ are Hölder domains. We prove that if the increasing family $K_t$ is generated by a simple curve and the final d…
One-parameter semigroups of holomorphic functions appear naturally in various applications of Complex Analysis, and in particular, in the theory of (temporally) homogeneous Markov processes. A suitable analogue of one-parameter semigroups in the inhomogeneous setting is the notion of a (reverse) evolution family. In this paper we study evolution families formed by Bernstein functions, which play the role of Laplace exponents for inhomogeneous continuous-state branching processes. In particular, we characterize all Herglotz vector fields that generate such evolution families and give a complex-…
For any bounded domains $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$, Deng, Guan and Zhang introduced the squeezing function $S_Ω(z)$ which is a biholomorphic invariant of bounded domains. We show that for $n=1$, the squeezing function on an annulus $A_r = \lbrace z \in \mathbb{C} : r <|z| <1 \rbrace$ is given by $S_{A_r}(z)= \max \left\lbrace |z| ,\frac{r}{|z|} \right\rbrace$ for all $0<r<1$. This disproves the conjectured formula for the squeezing function proposed by Deng, Guan and Zhang and establishes (up to biholomorphisms) the squeezing function for all doubly-connected domains in $\mathbb{C}$ other than th…
