We consider the quantum Friedmann equations which include one-loop vacuum fluctuations due to gravitons and scalar field matter in a FLRW background with constant $ε=-{\dot{H}}/{H^2}$. After several field redefinitions, to remove the mixing between the gravitational and matter degrees of freedom, we can construct the one loop correction to the Friedmann equations. Due to cosmological particle creation, the propagators needed in such a calculation are typically infrared divergent. In this paper we construct the graviton and matter propagators, making use of the recent construction of the infrared finite scalar propagators calculated on a compact spatial manifold in \cite{Janssen:2008px}. The resulting correction to the Friedman equations is suppressed with respect to the tree level contribution by a factor of $H^2/m_p^2$ and shows no secular growth.
We argued in a previous paper [R. A. Vanderveld et al. 2006, arXiv:astro-ph/0602476] that negative deceleration parameters at the center of symmetry in Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi cosmological models can only occur if the model is not smooth at the origin. Here we demonstrate explicitly the connection between non-smoothness and the failure of positivity theorems for deceleration. We also address some confusion that has arisen in the literature and respond to some recent criticisms of our arguments.
Bermann [ Nuovo Cimento B (1983), 74, 182 ] presented a law of variation of Hubble parameter that yields constant deceleration parameter models of the Universe. In this paper, we study some cosmological models with negative constant deceleration parameter within the framework of Lyra geometry.
In this paper, we have derived the field equations in an extended theory of gravity in an anisotropic space time background and in the presence of magnetic field. The physical and geometrical parameters of the models are determined with respect to the Hubble parameter using some algebraic approaches. A time varying scale factor has been introduced to analyze the behavior of the model. From some diagnostic approach, we found that the model behaves as $Λ_{CDM}$ model at late time of cosmic evolution.
The spectrum and amplitude of the stochastic background of relic gravitons produced in a bouncing universe is calculated. The matter content of the model consists of dust and radiation fluids, and the bounce occurs due to quantum cosmological effects when the universe approaches the classical singularity in the contracting phase. The resulting amplitude is very small and it cannot be observed by any present and near future gravitational wave detector. Hence, as in the ekpyrotic model, any observation of these relic gravitons will rule out this type of quantum cosmological bouncing model.
In this article we have presented FRW cosmological model in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory. This paper deals with a new proposed form of deceleration parameter and cosmological constant. The effect of bulk viscosity is also studied in the presence of modified Chaplygin gas equation of state. Further, we have discussed the physical behaviors of the models.
A spatially homogeneous anisotropic LRS Bianchi type-I cosmological model is studied in $f(R,T)$ gravity with a special form of Hubble's parameter, which leads to constant deceleration parameter. The parameters involved in the considered form of Hubble parameter can be tuned to match, our models with the $Λ$CDM model. With the present observed value of the deceleration parameter, we have discussed physical and kinematical properties of a specific model. Moreover, we have discussed the cosmological distances for our model.
Relevant deformations of gravity present an exciting window of opportunity to probe the rigidity of gravity on cosmological scales. For a single-graviton theory, the leading relevant deformation constitutes a graviton mass term. In this paper, we investigate the classical and quantum stability of massive cosmological gravitons on generic Friedman backgrounds. For a Universe expanding towards a de Sitter epoch, we find that massive cosmological gravitons are self-protected against unitarity violations by a strong coupling phenomenon.
The present acceleration of the universe leads to the formation of a cosmological future event horizon. We explore the effects of the event horizon on cosmological backreaction due to inhomogeneities in the universe. Beginning from the onset of the present accelerated era, we show that backreaction in presence of the event horizon causes acceleration to slow down in the subsequent evolution. Transition to deceleration occurs eventually, ensuring avoidance of a big rip.
We propose a new law for the deceleration parameter that varies linearly with time and covers Berman's law where it is constant. Our law not only allows one to generalize many exact solutions that were obtained assuming constant deceleration parameter, but also gives a better fit with data (from SNIa, BAO and CMB), particularly concerning the late time behavior of the universe. According to our law only the spatially closed and flat universes are allowed; in both cases the cosmological fluid we obtain exhibits quintom like behavior and the universe ends with a big-rip. This is a result consist…
FRW models of the universe have been studied in the cosmological theory based on Lyra's manifold. A new class of exact solutions has been obtained by considering a time dependent displacement field for variable deceleration parameter from which three models of the universe are derived (i) exponential (ii) polynomial and (iii) sinusoidal form respectively. The behaviour of these models of the universe are also discussed. Finally some possibilities of further problems and their investigations have been pointed out.
The main purpose of the present paper is to investigate LRS Bianchi type I metric in the presence of perfect fluid and dark energy. In order to obtain a deterministic solution of the field equations we have assumed that, the two sources of the perfect fluid and dark energy interact minimally with separate conservation of their energy momentum tensors. The EoS parameter of the perfect fluid is also assumed to be constant. In addition to these we have used a special law of variation of Hubble parameter proposed by Berman that yields constant deceleration parameter. For two different values of th…
Graviton fluctuations induce strong non-perturbative infrared renormalization effects for the cosmological constant. The functional renormalization flow drives a positive cosmological constant towards zero, solving the cosmological constant problem without the need to tune parameters. We propose a simple computation of the graviton contribution to the flow of the effective potential for scalar fields. Within variable gravity we find that the potential increases asymptotically at most quadratically with the scalar field. With effective Planck mass proportional to the scalar field, the solutions…
We calculate the fermion propagator in FLRW spacetimes with constant deceleration $q=ε-1$, $ε=-\dot{H}/H^{2}$ for excited states. For fermions whose mass is generated by a scalar field through a Yukawa coupling $m=g_{\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle{Y}}} ϕ$, we assume $ϕ\propto H$. We first solve for the mode functions by splitting the spinor into a direct product of helicity and chirality spinors. We also allow for non-vacuum states. We normalise the spinors using a consistent canonical quantisation and by requiring orthogonality of particle and anti-particle spinors. We apply our propagator to cal…
We discuss the cosmological reconstruction in modified Gauss-Bonnet and F(R) gravities. Two alternative representations of the action (with and without auxiliary scalar) are considered. The approximate description of deceleration-acceleration transition cosmologies is reconstructed. It is shown that cosmological solution containing Big Bang and Big Rip singularities may be reconstructed only using the representation with the auxiliary field. The analytical description of the deceleration-acceleration transition cosmology in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is demonstrated to be impossible at suff…
We discuss the production and evolution of cosmological gravitons showing how the cosmological background affects their dynamics. Besides, the detection of cosmological gravitons could constitute an extremely important signature to discriminate among different cosmological models. Here we consider the cases of scalar-tensor gravity and $f(R)$ gravity where it is demonstrated the amplification of graviton amplitude changes if compared with General Relativity. Possible observational constraints are discussed.
Primary features of a new cosmological model, which is based on conjectures about an existence of the graviton background and superstrong gravitational quantum interaction, are considered. An expansion of the universe is impossible in such the model because of deceleration of massive objects by the graviton background, which is similar to the one for the NASA deep space probes Pioneer 10, 11. Redshifts of remote objects are caused in the model by interaction of photons with the graviton background, and the Hubble constant depends on an intensity of interaction and an equivalent temperature of …
We examine the observational viability of a class of $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity cosmological models. Particular attention is devoted to constraints from the recent observational determination of the redshift of the cosmological deceleration-acceleration transition. Making use of the fact that the Ricci scalar is a function of redshift $z$ in these models, $\mathcal {R=R}(z)$, and so is $f(z)$, we use cosmography to relate a $f(z)$ test function evaluated at higher $z$ to late-time cosmographic bounds. First, we consider a model independent procedure to build up a numerical $f(z)$ by requiring th…
The present study deals with LRS Bianchi type I cosmological model representing massive string. The energy-momentum tensor for such string as formulated by Letelier (1983) is used to construct massive string cosmological models for which we assume that the shear scalar ($σ$) is proportional to the expansion scalar ($θ$). The study reveals that massive strings dominate the early Universe. The strings eventually disappear from the Universe for sufficiently large time, which is in agreement with the current astronomical observations. Some physical and geometrical behaviour of models are also disc…
It is well known that gravitons can convert into photons, and vice versa, in the presence of cosmological magnetic fields. We study this conversion process in the context of atomic dark matter scenario. In this scenario, we can expect cosmological dark magnetic fields, which are free from the stringent constraint from the cosmic microwave observations. We find that gravitons can effectively convert into dark photons in the presence of cosmological dark magnetic fields. The graviton-dark photon conversion effect may open up a new window for ultra high frequency gravitational waves.
In this work, we explore some cosmological implications of the model proposed by M. Visser in 1998. In his approach, Visser intends to take in account mass for the graviton by means of an additional bimetric tensor in the Einstein's field equations. Our study has shown that a consistent cosmological model arises from Visser's approach. The most interesting feature is that an accelerated expansion phase naturally emerges from the cosmological model, and we do not need to postulate any kind of dark energy to explain the current observational data for distant type Ia supernovae (SNIa).
We study an special law for the deceleration parameter, recently proposed by Akarsu and Dereli, in the context of $f(R)$, $f(T)$ and $f(\mathcal{G})$ theories of modified gravity. This law covers the law of Berman for obtaining exact cosmological models to account for the current acceleration of the universe, and also gives the opportunity to generalize many of the dark energy models having better consistency with the cosmological observations. Our aim is to reconstruct the $f(R)$, $f(T)$ and $f(\mathcal{G})$ models inspired by this law of variable deceleration parameter. Such models may then …
I consider a simple model where the graviton mass and the cosmological constant depend on a scalar field with appropriate couplings and I calculate the graviton propagator and the resulting effective potential for the scalar field in order to examine issues of stability and symmetry breaking.
In the framework of the minimal quartet-metric gravity/systogravity, a scalar graviton/systolon is stated as a universal dark component, with supplementary manifestations in the different contexts either as dark matter or dark energy. An ensuing extension to the standard ΛCDM model is developed. A modification of the late expansion of the Universe, with an attractor of a scalar master equation defining an effective cosmological constant, which supersedes the true one, is proposed. A new partial solution to the cosmological constant problem is discussed.
We study the effects of gravitationally-driven decoherence on tunneling processes associated with false vacuum decays, such as the Coleman--De~Luccia instanton. We compute the thermal graviton-induced decoherence rate for a wave function describing a perfect fluid of nonzero energy density in a finite region. When the effective cosmological constant is positive, the thermal graviton background sourced by a de Sitter horizon provides an unavoidable decoherence effect, which may have important consequences for tunneling processes in cosmological history. We discuss generalizations and consequenc…
In this paper, we study the dynamical behaviour of the Universe in the $F(R,G)$ theory of gravity, where $R$ and $G$ respectively denote the Ricci scalar and Gauss-Bonnet invariant. Our wide analysis encompasses the energy conditions, cosmographic parameters, $Om(z)$ diagnostic, stability and the viability of reconstructing the referred model through a scalar field formalism. The model obtained here shows the quintessence like behaviour at late times.
We use cosmological perturbation theory to study the backreaction effects of a self-consistent and well-defined cosmological averaging on the dynamics and the evolution of the Universe. Working with a perturbed Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Einstein-de Sitter cosmological solution in a comoving volume-preserving gauge, we compute the expressions for the expansion scalar and deceleration parameter to second order, which we use to characterize the backreaction. We find that the fractional shift in the Hubble parameter with respect to the input background cosmological model is Delta~10^{-5},…
We compile an updated list of 38 measurements of the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ between redshifts $0.07 \leq z \leq 2.36$ and use them to place constraints on model parameters of constant and time-varying dark energy cosmological models, both spatially flat and curved. We use five models to measure the redshift of the cosmological deceleration-acceleration transition, $z_{\rm da}$, from these $H(z)$ data. Within the error bars, the measured $z_{\rm da}$ are insensitive to the model used, depending only on the value assumed for the Hubble constant $H_0$. The weighted mean of our measurements is $z…
We show that the graviton acquires a mass in a de Sitter background given by $m_{g}^{2}=-{2/3}Λ.$ This is precisely the fine-tuning value required for the perturbed gravitational field to mantain its two degrees of freedom.
This manuscript investigate the dark energy Bianchi type-I cosmological models in presence of generalized Chaplygin gas, variable gravitational and cosmological constants. In this manuscript, exact solutions of Einstein field equations are obtained under the assumption of time periodic varying deceleration parameter. The physical and dynamical behaviors of the models have been discussed with the help of graphical representations. Also we have discussed the stability and physical acceptability of the obtained solutions
In the early seventies, Alan Sandage defined cosmology as the search for two numbers: Hubble parameter ${{H}_{0}}$ and deceleration parameter ${{q}_{0}}$. The first of the two basic cosmological parameters (the Hubble parameter) describes the linear part of the time dependence of the scale factor. Treating the Universe as a dynamical system it is natural to assume that it is non-linear: indeed, linearity is nothing more than approximation, while non-linearity represents the generic case. It is evident that future models of the Universe must take into account different aspects of its evolution.…
The standard $Λ$-CDM predicts a growth of structures which tends to be higher than the values of redshift space distortion (RSD) measurements, if the cosmological parameters are fixed by the CMB data. In this paper we point out that this discrepancy can be resolved/understood if we assume that the graviton has a small but non-zero mass. In the context of the Minimal Theory of Massive Gravity (MTMG), due to infrared Lorentz violations measurable only at present cosmological scales, the graviton acquires a mass without being haunted by unwanted extra degrees of freedom. While the so-called self-…
The objective of this work enclosed with the study of spatially homogeneous anisotropic Bianchi type-I universe in $f(R,T)$ gravity (where $R$ is the Ricci scalar and $T$ is the trace of stress energy momentum tensor) in two different cases viz. $f(R,T)=R+2f(T)$ and $f(R,T)=f_1(R)+f_2(T)$ with bulk viscosity matter content. In this study, we consider a time varying deceleration parameter, which generates an accelerating universe to obtain the exact solution of the field equations. The physical and kinematical properties of both the models are discussed in detail for the future evolution of the…
The van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity requires that the mass $m$ of the graviton is exactly zero, otherwise measurements of the deflection of starlight by the Sun and the precession of Mercury's perihelion would conflict with their theoretical values. This theoretical discontinuity is open to question for numerous reasons. In this paper we show from a phenomenological viewpoint that the $m>0$ hypothesis is in accord with Supernova Ia and CMB observations, and that the large scale structure of the universe suggests that $m \sim 10^{-30} $eV$/c^2$.
We introduce additional restriction into "general ether theory" - a generalization of Lorentz ether theory to gravity - which fixes the signs of the cosmological constants in this theory. This leads to an oscillating universe, thus, solves the cosmological horizon problem without inflation. We prove the equivalence of the Lagrangian of this theory with Logunov's "relativistic theory of gravity" with massive graviton and a variant of GR with four non-standard scalar fields and negative cosmological constant. We consider the remaining differences between these theories.
Recently, the cosmological deceleration-acceleration transition redshift in $f(R)$ gravity has been considered in order to address consistently the problem of cosmic evolution. It is possible to show that the deceleration parameter changes sign at a given redshift according to observational data. Furthermore, a $f(R)$ gravity cosmological model can be constructed in brane-antibrane system starting from the very early universe and accounting for the cosmological redshift at all phases of cosmic history, from inflation to late time acceleration. Here we propose a $f(R)$ model where transition re…
We investigate the effect that the average backreaction of structure formation has on the dynamics of the cosmological expansion, within the concordance model. Our approach in the Poisson gauge is fully consistent up to second-order in a perturbative expansion about a flat Friedmann background, including a cosmological constant. We discuss the key length scales which are inherent in any averaging procedure of this kind. We identify an intrinsic homogeneity scale that arises from the averaging procedure, beyond which a residual offset remains in the expansion rate and deceleration parameter. In…
We determine a cosmological model that include a positive acceleration of the Universe and a time decreasing fine structure constant. The present day deceleration parameter is estimated by us, according to our model and the available experimental data .
Possible effects are considered which would be caused by a hypothetical superstrong interaction of photons or massive bodies with single gravitons of the graviton background. If full cosmological redshift magnitudes are caused by the interaction, then the luminosity distance in a flat non-expanding universe as a function of redshift is very similar to the specific function which fits supernova cosmology data by Riess et al. From another side, in this case every massive body, slowly moving relatively to the background, would experience a constant acceleration, proportional to the Hubble constan…
We revisit the proposal that the resolution of the Cosmological Constant Problem involves a sub-millimeter breakdown of the point-particle approximation for gravitons. No fundamental description of such a breakdown, which simultaneously preserves the point-particle nature of matter particles, is yet known. However, basic aspects of the self-consistency of the idea, such as preservation of the macroscopic Equivalence Principle while satisfying quantum naturalness of the cosmological constant, are addressed in this paper within a Soft Graviton Effective Theory. It builds on Weinberg's analysis o…
Intrinsic properties of the space itself and quantum fluctuations of its geometry are sufficient to provide a mechanism for the acceleration of cosmological expansion (dark energy effect). Applying Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy approach to self-consistent equations of one-loop quantum gravity, we found exact solutions that yield acceleration. The permanent creation and annihilation of virtual gravitons is not in exact balance because of the expansion of the Universe. The excess energy comes from the spontaneous process of graviton creation and is trapped by the background. It p…
We study the imprint of a massive scalar particle on cosmological correlation functions, and suggest the way to determine the mass of the newly introduced particle, which is expected to be around 10^14 GeV. After reviewing the basic theory by Maldacena and the effective field theory (EFT) of inflation by Cheung et al., we apply these two theories to construct new couplings of a massive scalar field with primordial fluctuations including an arbitrary number of gravitons. We compute some correlation functions including these couplings in the soft-graviton limit. We show that when the number of s…
Conversion of gravitational waves into electromagnetic radiation is discussed. The probability of transformations of gravitons into photons in presence of cosmological background magnetic field is calculated at the recombination epoch and during subsequent cosmological stages. The produced electromagnetic radiation is concentrated in the X-ray part of the spectrum. It is shown that if the early Universe was dominated by primordial black holes (PBHs) prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), the relic gravitons emitted by PBHs would transform to an almost isotropic background of electromagnetic …
We propose a multi-graviton theory with non-nearest-neighbor couplings in the theory space. The resulting four-dimensional discrete mass spectrum reflects the structure of a latticized extra dimension. For a plausible mass spectrum motivated by the discretized Randall-Sundrum brane-world, the induced cosmological constant turns out to be positive and may serve as a quite simple model for the dark energy of our accelerating universe.
Motivated by the interest raised by the problem of Lorenz-symmetry violating gauge theories in connetion with gravity models, this contribution sets out to provide a general method to systematically study the excitation spectrum of gravity actions which include a Lorentz-symmetry breaking Chern-Simons-type action term for the spin connection. A complete set of spin-type operators is found which accounts for the (Lorentz) violation parameter to all orders and graviton propagators are worked out in a number of different situations.
In this work, we study a cosmological model of Bianchi type-I Universe in teleparallel gravity for a perfect fluid. To obtain the cosmological solution of the model, we assume that the deceleration parameter is a linear function of the Hubble parameter $H$ i.e. $q=-1+βH$ (where $β$ as a positive constant). Consequently, we get a model of our Universe, where it goes from the initial phase of deceleration to the current phase of acceleration. We have discussed some physical and geometric properties such as Hubble parameter, deceleration parameter, energy density, pressure, and equation of state …

The graviton is pictured as a bound state of a fermion and anti-fermion with the spacetime metric assumed to be a composite object of spinor fields, based on a globally Lorentz invariant action proposed by Hebecker and Wetterich. The additional degrees of freedom beyond those of the graviton are described by Goldstone boson gravitational degrees of freedom. If we assume that the fermion is a light neutrino with mass $m_nu\sim 10^{-3}$ eV, then we obtain the effective vacuum density ${\barρ}_λ\sim (10^{-3} eV)^4$, which agrees with the estimates for the cosmological constant from WMAP and SNIa …
We studied plane symmetric cosmological model in the presence of quark and strange quark matter with the help of f(R,T) theory. To decipher solutions of Plane symmetric space-time, we used power law relation between scale factor and deceleration parameter. We considered the special law of variation of Hubble's parameter proposed by Berman (Nuovo Cimento B 74, 182, 1983) which yields constant deceleration parameter. We also discussed the physical behavior of the solutions by using some physical parameters.
We present the coupling of the torsion scalar $T$ and the trace of energy-momentum tensor $\mathcal{T}$, which produces new modified $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ gravity. Moreover, we consider the functional form $f(T,\mathcal{T}) =α\mathcal{T}+βT^2$ where $α$ and $β$ are free parameters. As an alternative to a cosmological constant, the $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ theory may offer a theoretical explanation of the late-time acceleration. The recent observational data to the considered model especially the bounds on model parameters is applied in detail. Furthermore, we analyze the cosmological behavior of the de…
If the cosmological constant $Λ$ can not be neglected, we will show in this short report, that graviton should have a rest mass $m_g=\sqrt{2Λ}=\sqrt{2Λ}\hbar c^{-1}$ different from zero.
