We consider a double quantum dot system with two embedded and non-aligned spin impurities to manipulate the magnitude and polarization of the electron spin density. The device is attached to semi-infinite one-dimensional leads which are treated exactly. We provide a real-time description of the electron spin dynamics when a sequence of ultrafast voltage pulses acts on the device. The numerical simulations are carried out using a spin generalized and modified version of a recently proposed algorithm for the time propagation of open systems [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 72}, 035308 (2005)]. Time-dependent spin accumulations and spin currents are calculated during the entire operating regime which includes spin injection and read-out processes. The full knowledge of the electron dynamics allows us to engineer the transient responses and improve the device performance. An approximate rate equation for the electron spin is also derived and used to discuss the numerical results.
Employing the ultrafast control of electronic states of a semiconductor quantum dot in a cavity, we introduce a novel approach to achieve on-demand emission of single photons with almost perfect indistinguishability and photon pairs with near ideal entanglement. Our scheme is based on optical excitation off-resonant to a cavity mode followed by ultrafast control of the electronic states using the time-dependent quantum-confined Stark effect, which then allows for cavity-resonant emission. Our theoretical analysis takes into account cavity-loss mechanisms, the Stark effect, and phonon-induced d…
We study theoretically the fluctuation properties of acoustic phonons created in a semiconductor quantum dot after ultrafast optical excitation. An excitation with a single ultrafast pulse creates an exciton confined to the quantum dot, which is coupled to longitudinal acoustic phonons. This leads to the formation of a polaron in the quantum dot accompanied by the emission of a phonon wave packet. We show that the fluctuations of the lattice displacement associated with the wave packet after a single laser pulse excitation in resonance with the exciton transition are always larger than their r…
We have studied theoretically the possibility of ultra-fast manipulation of a single electron spin in 2D semiconductor quantum dots, by means of high-frequency time-dependent electric fields. The electron spin degree of freedom is excited through spin-orbit coupling, and the procedure may be enhanced by the presence of a static magnetic field. We use quantum optimal control theory to tailor the temporal profile of the electric field in order to achieve the most effective manipulation. The scheme predicts significant control over spin operations in times of the order of picoseconds -- an ultraf…
Based on a multi-particle-state stimulated Raman adiabatic passage approach, a comprehensive theoretical study on the ultrafast optical manipulation of electron spins in quantum wells is presented. In addition to corroborating the experimental findings [Science {\bf 292}, 2458 (2001)], we improve the expression of the optical-pulse-induced effective magnetic field, in comparison with the one obtained via the conventional single-particle ac-Stark shift. Further study of the effect of hole spin relaxation reveals that while the coherent optical manipulation of electron spin in undoped quantum we…
We demonstrate ultrafast incoherent depopulation of a quantum dot from above to below the transparency point using LA-phonon-assisted emission stimulated by a redshifted laser pulse. The QD is turned from a weakly vibronic system into a strongly vibronic one by laser driving which enables the phonon-assisted relaxation between the excitonic components of two dressed states. The depopulation is achieved within a laser pulse-width-limited time of 20 ps and exhibits a broad tuning range of a few meV. Our experimental results are well reproduced by path-integral calculations.
Through a series of transverse magnetic focusing experiments, we show that hot electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas system undergo an ultrafast relaxation when generated by a quantum dot (QD) instead of a quantum point contact (QPC). We find here that QPC hot electrons were well described by the non-interacting Fermi gas model for excitations up to 1.5 meV above the Fermi level of 7.44 meV, whereas QD hot electrons exhibited an energy loss quadratic to the excitation. The energy relaxation was a sizeable fraction of the tested excitations, up to about 55%. With the proposal that the hot…
Coherent manipulation of quantum bits (qubits) on time scales much shorter than the coherence time is a key prerequisite for quantum information processing. Electron spins in quantum dots (QDs) are particularly attractive for implementations of qubits. Efficient optical methods for initialization and readout of spins have been developed in recent years. Spin coherence times in the microsecond range have been demonstrated, so that spin control by picosecond optical pulses would be highly desirable. Then a large number of spin rotations could be performed while coherence is maintained. A major r…
Symmetry is a powerful concept in physics, but its applicability to far-from-equilibrium states is still being understood. Recent attention has focused on how far-from-equilibrium states lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking. Conversely, ultrafast optical pumping can be used to drastically change the energy landscape and quench the magnetic order parameter in magnetic systems. Here, we find a distinct symmetry-dependent ultrafast behaviour by use of ultrafast x-ray scattering from magnetic patterns with varying degrees of isotropic and anisotropic symmetry. After pumping with an optical laser,…
We demonstrate the all-optical ultrafast manipulation and read-out of optical transitions in a single negatively charged self-assembled InAs quantum dot, an important step towards ultrafast control of the resident spin. Experiments performed at zero magnetic field show the excitation and decay of the trion (negatively charged exciton) as well as Rabi oscillations between the electron and trion states. Application of a DC magnetic field perpendicular to the growth axis of the dot enables observation of a complex quantum beat structure produced by independent precession of the ground state elect…
We propose a fast and accurate spin initialization method for a single electron trapped in an electrostatic quantum dot. The dot is created in a nanodevice composed of a catalytically grown indium antimonide (InSb) nanowire and nearby gates to which control voltages are applied. Initially we insert a single electron of arbitrary spin into the wire. Operations on spin are performed using the Rashba spin-orbit interaction induced by an electric field. First, a single pulse of voltages applied to lateral gates is used to split the electron wavepacket into two parts with opposite spin orientations…
The coherent manipulation of spin and pseudospin underlies existing and emerging quantum technologies, including NMR, quantum communication, and quantum computation. Valley polarization, associated with the occupancy of degenerate, but quantum mechanically distinct valleys in momentum space, closely resembles spin polarization and has been proposed as a pseudospin carrier for the future quantum electronics. Valley exciton polarization has been created in the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers using excitation by circularly polarized light and has been detected both optically and…
We demonstrate three-photon excitation in quantum dots with a mode-locked fiber laser operating in the telecommunications band. We compare spectra and intensity dependence of fluorescence from one- and three-photon excitation of commercially available 640 nm quantum dots, using a 372 nm diode laser for one-photon excitation and 116 fs pulses from a mode-locked fiber laser with a center wavelength of 1575 nm for three-photon excitation.
When a two-level quantum dot and a plasmonic metal nanoantenna are resonantly coupled by the electromagnetic near field, the system can exhibit a Fano resonance, resulting in a transparency dip in the optical spectrum of the coupled system. We calculate the nonlinear response of such a system, for illumination both by continuous-wave and ultrafast pulsed lasers, using both a cavity quantum electrodynamics and a semiclassical coupled-oscillator model. For the experimentally relevant case of meV thermal broadening of the quantum-dot transition, we predict that femtosecond pulsed illumination can…
We employ a quantum master equations approach based on a vectorial Maxwell-pseudospin model to compute the quantum evolution of the spin populations and coherences in the fundamental singlet trion transition of a negatively charged quantum dot embedded in a micropillar cavity. Excitation of the system is achieved through an ultrashort, either circularly or linearly polarised resonant pulse. By implementing a realistic micropillar cavity geometry, we numerically demonstrate a giant optical phase shift ($\sim \pm π/2$) of a resonant circularly polarised pulse in the weak-coupling regime. The pha…
A quantum-kinetic approach to the ultrafast dynamics of carrier multiplication in semiconductor quantum dots is presented. We investigate the underlying dynamics in the electronic subband occupations and the time-resolved optical emission spectrum, focusing on the interplay between the light-matter and the Coulomb interaction. We find a transition between qualitatively differing behaviors of carrier multiplication, which is controlled by the ratio of the interaction induced time scale and the pulse duration of the exciting light pulse. On short time scales, i.e., before intra-band relaxation, …
We report on the impulsive generation of coherent optical phonons in CdTe0.68Se0.32 nanocrystallites embedded in a glass matrix. Pump probe experiments using femtosecond laser pulses were performed by tuning the laser central energy to resonate with the absorption edge of the nanocrystals. We identify two longitudinal optical phonons, one longitudinal acoustic phonon and a fourth mode of a mixed longitudinal-transverse nature. The amplitude of the optical phonons as a function of the laser central energy exhibits a resonance that is well described by a model based on impulsive stimulated Raman…
Hole spin qubits in planar Ge heterostructures are one of the frontrunner platforms for scalable quantum computers. In these systems, the spin-orbit interactions permit efficient all-electric qubit control. We propose a minimal design modification of planar devices that enhances these interactions by orders of magnitude and enables low power ultrafast qubit operations in the GHz range. Our approach is based on an asymmetric potential that strongly squeezes the quantum dot in one direction. This confinement-induced spin-orbit interaction does not rely on microscopic details of the device such a…
The interaction between two quantum bits enables entanglement, the two-particle correlations that are at the heart of quantum information science. In semiconductor quantum dots much work has focused on demonstrating single spin qubit control using optical techniques. However, optical control of entanglement of two spin qubits remains a major challenge for scaling from a single qubit to a full-fledged quantum information platform. Here, we combine advances in vertically-stacked quantum dots with ultrafast laser techniques to achieve optical control of the entangled state of two electron spins. …
We employ ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy to directly monitor electron tunneling between discrete orbital states in a pair of spatially separated quantum dots. Immediately after excitation, several peaks are observed in the pump-probe spectrum due to Coulomb interactions between the photo-generated charge carriers. By tuning the relative energy of the orbital states in the two dots and monitoring the temporal evolution of the pump-probe spectra the electron and hole tunneling times are separately measured and resonant tunneling between the two dots is shown to be mediated both by elastic and…
We report transport data obtained for a double-gated bilayer graphene quantum dot. In Coulomb blockade measurements, the gate dielectric Cytop(TM) is found to provide remarkable electronic stability even at cryogenic temperatures. Moreover, we demonstrate gate manipulation with square shaped voltage pulses at frequencies up to 100 MHz and show that the signal amplitude is not affected by the presence of the capacitively coupled back gate.
The coherent time evolution of electrons in double quantum dots induced by fast bias-voltage switches is studied theoretically. As it was shown experimentally, such driven double quantum dots are potential devices for controlled manipulation of charge qubits. By numerically solving a quantum master equation we obtain the energy- and time-resolved electron transfer through the device which resembles the measured data. The observed oscillations are found to depend on the level offset of the two dots during the manipulation and, most surprisingly, also the on initialization stage. By means of an …
We investigate coherent time-evolution of charge states (pseudo-spin qubit) in a semiconductor double quantum dot. This fully-tunable qubit is manipulated with a high-speed voltage pulse that controls the energy and decoherence of the system. Coherent oscillations of the qubit are observed for several combinations of many-body ground and excited states of the quantum dots. Possible decoherence mechanisms in the present device are also discussed.
Magnetically coupling a nano-mechanical resonator to a double quantum dot confining two electrons can enable the manipulation of a single electron spin and the readout of the resonator's natural frequency. When the Larmor frequency matches the resonator frequency, the electron spin in one of the dots can be selectively flipped by the magnetised resonator. By simultaneously measuring the charge state of the two-electron double quantum dots, this transition can be detected thus enabling the natural frequency of the mechanical resonator to be determined.
Operation speed and coherence time are two core measures for the viability of a qubit. Strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and relatively weak hyperfine interaction make holes in germanium (Ge) intriguing candidates for spin qubits with rapid, all-electrical coherent control. Here we report ultrafast single-spin manipulation in a hole-based double quantum dot in a germanium hut wire (GHW). Mediated by the strong SOI, a Rabi frequency exceeding 540 MHz is observed at a magnetic field of 100 mT, setting a record for ultrafast spin qubit control in semiconductor systems. We demonstrate that the s…
We present results on both the intensity and phase-dynamics of the transient non-linear optical response of a single quantum dot (SQD). The time evolution of the Four Wave Mixing (FWM) signal on a subpicosecond time scale is dominated by biexciton effects. In particular, for the cross-polarized excitation case a biexciton bound state is found. In this latter case, mean-field results are shown to give a poor description of the non-linear optical signal at small times. By properly treating exciton-exciton effects in a SQD, coherent oscillations in the FWM signal are clearly demonstrated. These o…
Physical implementations of large-scale quantum processors based on solid-state platforms benefit from realizations of quantum bits positioned in regular arrays. Self-assembled quantum dots are well-established as promising candidates for quantum optics and quantum information processing, but they are randomly positioned. Site-controlled quantum dots, on the other hand, are grown in pre-defined locations, but have not yet been sufficiently developed to be used as a platform for quantum information processing. In this letter we demonstrate all-optical ultrafast complete coherent control of a qu…
We consider theoretically a magnetic impurity spin driven by polarized electrons tunneling through a double quantum dot system. Spin blockade effect and spin conservation in the system make the magnetic impurity sufficiently interact with each transferring electron. As a results, a single collected electron carries information about spin change of the magnetic impurity. The scheme may develop all electrical manipulation of magnetic atoms by means of single electrons, which is significant for the implementation of scalable logical gates in information processing systems.
We investigate the usefulness and viability of the scheme developed by Viola and Lloyd [Phys. Rev. A 58, 2733 (1998)] to control dephasing in the context of exciton-based quantum computation with self-assembled quantum dots. We demonstrate that optical coherence of a confined exciton qubit exposed to phonon-induced dephasing can be substantially enhanced through the application of a simple periodic sequence of control pulses. The shape of the quantum dot has a significant effect on the dephasing properties. Remarkably, we find that quantum dots with parameters optimized for implementing quantu…
We studied experimentally the dynamics of the exchange interaction between two antiparallel electron spins in a so-called metastable double quantum dot where coupling to the electron reservoirs can be ignored. We demonstrate that the level of control of such a double dot is higher than in conventional double dots. In particular, it allows to couple coherently two electron spins in an efficient manner following a scheme initially proposed by Loss and DiVincenzo. The present study demonstrates that metastable quantum dots are a possible route to increase the number of coherently coupled quantum …
We use optimal control theory to construct external electric fields which coherently transfer the electronic charge in a double quantum-dot system. Without truncation of the eigenstates we operate on desired superpositions of the states in order to prepare the system to a localized state and to coherently transfer the charge from one well to another. Within a fixed time interval, the optimal processes are shown to occur through several excited states. The obtained yields are generally between 99% and 99.99% depending on the field constraints, and they are not dramatically affected by strict fr…
We show that spin-orbit coupling in a quantum dot molecule allows for coherent manipulation of two electron spin states using Raman transitions. Such two-electron spin states defined by the singlet and triplet states of two exchange coupled quantum dots can have favorable coherence properties. In addition, two of the four metastable ground states in this system can be used as auxiliary states that could facilitate implementation of tasks such as mapping of spin states to that of a single propagating photon. We find that even weak spin-orbit effects -- manifesting themselves as slightly differe…
A fundamental goal in the manipulation of quantum systems is the achievement of many coherent oscillations within the characteristic dephasing time T2*[1]. Most manipulations of electron spins in quantum dots have focused on the construction and control of two-state quantum systems, or qubits, in which each quantum dot is occupied by a single electron[2-7]. Here we perform quantum manipulations on a system with more electrons per quantum dot, in a double dot with three electrons. We demonstrate that tailored pulse sequences can be used to induce coherent rotations between 3-electron quantum st…
We manipulate a single electron in a fully tunable double quantum dot using microwave excitation. Under resonant conditions, microwaves drive transitions between the (1,0) and (0,1) charge states of the double dot. Local quantum point contact charge detectors enable a direct measurement of the photon-induced change in occupancy of the charge states. From charge sensing measurements, we find T1~16 ns and a lower bound estimate for T2* of 400 ps for the charge two-level system.
The metallic tip of a scanning force microscope operated at 300 mK is used to locally induce a potential in a fully controllable double quantum dot defined via local anodic oxidation in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. Using scanning gate techniques we record spatial images of the current through the sample for different numbers of electrons on the quantum dots (i.e., for different quantum states). Owing to the spatial resolution of current maps, we are able to determine the spatial position of the individual quantum dots, and investigate their apparent relative shifts due to the voltage applied…
Quantum dot arrays provide a promising platform for quantum information processing. For universal quantum simulation and computation, one central issue is to demonstrate the exhaustive controllability of quantum states. Here, we report the addressable manipulation of three single electron spins in a triple quantum dot using a technique combining electron-spin-resonance and a micro-magnet. The micro-magnet makes the local Zeeman field difference between neighboring spins much larger than the nuclear field fluctuation, which ensures the addressable driving of electron-spin-resonance by shifting …
The scanning metallic tip of a scanning force microscope was coupled capacitively to electrons confined in a lithographically defined gate-tunable quantum dot at a temperature of 300 mK. Single electrons were made to hop on or off the dot by moving the tip or by changing the tip bias voltage owing to the Coulomb-blockade effect. Spatial images of conductance resonances map the interaction potential between the tip and individual electronic quantum dot states. Under certain conditions this interaction is found to contain a tip-voltage induced and a tip-voltage independent contribution.
The manipulation of single spins in double quantum dots by making use of the exchange interaction and a highly inhomogeneous magnetic field was discussed in [W. A. Coish and D. Loss, Phys. Rev. B 75, 161302 (2007)]. However, such large inhomogeneity is difficult to achieve through the slanting field of a micromagnet in current designs of lateral double dots. Therefore, we examine an analogous spin manipulation scheme directly applicable to realistic GaAs double dot setups. We estimate that typical gate times, realized at the singlet-triplet anticrossing induced by the inhomogeneous micromagnet…
We propose purely electric manipulation of spin qubits by means of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) {\it without magnetic field or magnets} in a double-quantum dot. All the unitary transformations can be constructed by the time-dependent Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction between the two spins, which arises from the Rashba SOI modulated by electric field. As a few demonstrations, we study both analytically and numerically the three operations, i.e., (A) the spin initialization, (B) the two-spin rotation in the opposite directions, and (C) the two-spin rotation in the same direction. The effects …
We investigate the influence of exciton-phonon coupling on the dynamics of a strongly coupled quantum dot-photonic crystal cavity system and explore the effects of this interaction on different schemes for non-classical light generation. By performing time-resolved measurements, we map out the detuning-dependent polariton lifetime and extract the spectrum of the polariton-to-phonon coupling with unprecedented precision. Photon-blockade experiments for different pulse-length and detuning conditions (supported by quantum optical simulations) reveal that achieving high-fidelity photon blockade re…
We report the coherent manipulation of electron spins in a double quantum dot integrated with a micro-magnet. We performed electric dipole spin resonance experiments in the continuous wave (CW) and pump-and-probe modes. We observed two resonant CW peaks and two Rabi oscillations of the quantum dot current by sweeping an external magnetic field at a fixed frequency. Two peaks and oscillations are measured at different resonant magnetic field, which reflects the fact that the local magnetic fields at each quantum dot are modulated by the stray field of a micro-magnet. As predicted with a density…
With any roughness at the interface of an indirect-bandgap semiconducting dot, the phase of the valley-orbit coupling can take on a random value. This random value, in double quantum dots, causes a large change in the exchange splitting. We demonstrate a simple analytical method to calculate the phase, and thus the exchange splitting and singlet-triplet qubit frequency, for an arbitrary interface. We then show that, with lateral control of the position of a quantum dot using a gate voltage, the valley-orbit phase can be controlled over a wide range, so that variations in the exchange splitting…
The effect of an electric field on spin precession in In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots is calculated using multiband real-space envelope-function theory. The dependence of the Lande' g tensor on electric fields should permit high-frequency g tensor modulation resonance, as well as direct, nonresonant electric-field control of the hole spin. Subharmonic resonances have also been found in g tensor modulation resonance of the holes, due to the strong quadratic dependence of components of the hole g tensor on the electric field.
We achieve direct detection of electron hyperfine shifts in individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. For the previously inaccessible regime of strong magnetic fields $B_z\gtrsim0.1$ T, we demonstrate robust polarization of a few-hundred-particle nuclear spin bath, with optical initialization time of $\sim$ 1 ms and polarization lifetime exceeding $\sim$ 1 s. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of individual dots reveals strong electron-nuclear interactions characterized by the Knight fields $|B_e|\gtrsim50$ mT, an order of magnitude stronger than in III-V semiconductor quantum dots. Our studies …
A new generalised group-theoretical approach, based on master Maxwell-pseudospin equations, is proposed to explain recently observed enhanced circular dichroism in the excited state emission from p-doped quantum dot ensembles under resonant circularly polarised excitation into hot trion states, herein referred to as "spin-filtering effect". The theory agrees remarkably well with polarised time-resolved photoluminescence experiments, yielding largely unknown inter- and intra-shell spin relaxation time scales. This approach allows to predict optimum pulse parameters for control of spin dynamics,…
Increasing the speed limits of conventional electronics requires innovative approaches to manipulate other quantum properties of electrons besides their charge. An alternative approach utilizes the valley degree of freedom in low-dimensional semiconductors. Here we demonstrate that the valley degeneracy of exciton energies in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers may be lifted by coherent optical interactions on timescales corresponding to few tens of femtoseconds. The optical Stark and Bloch-Siegert effects generated by strong nonresonant circularly-polarized light induce valley-selectiv…
A hot-spot of high local field can be created in between two closely placed metal nanoparticles by irradiating them with an appropriate wavelength and polarization of incident light. The strength of the field at the hot-spot is expected to get enhanced by even up to six orders of magnitude than that of the applied field. Placing a semiconductor quantum dot or an analyte molecule at the hot-spot is an essential step towards harnessing the enhanced field for applications. In this article, we show that it is possible to position a CdTe quantum dot (QD) between two larger silver nanospheres in col…
We propose a method to flip the spin completely by an adiabatic transport of quantum dots. We show that it is possible to flip the spin by inducing a geometric phase on the spin state of a quantum dot. We estimate the geometric spin flip time (approximately 2 pico-sec) which turned out to be much shorter than the experimentally reported decoherence time (approx. 100 nano-sec) that would provide an alternative means of fliping the spin before reaching decoherence. It is important that both the Rashba coupling and the Dresselhaus coupling are present for inducing a phase necessary for spin flip.…
We demonstrate high speed manipulation of a few-electron double quantum dot. In the one-electron regime, the double dot forms a charge qubit. Microwaves are used drive transitions between the (1,0) and (0,1) charge states of the double dot. A local quantum point contact charge detector measures the photon-induced change in occupancy of the charge states. Charge detection is used to measure T1~16 ns and also provides a lower bound estimate for T2* of 400 ps for the charge qubit. In the two-electron regime we use pulsed-gate techniques to measure the singlet-triplet relaxation time for nearly-de…
We examine the multiple exciton population dynamics in PbS quantum dots by ultrafast spectrally-resolved supercontinuum transient absorption (SC-TA). We simultaneously probe the first three excitonic transitions over a broad spectral range. Transient spectra show the presence of first order bleach of absorption for the 1S_h-1S_e transition and second order bleach along with photoinduced absorption band for 1P_h-1P_e transition. We also report evidence of the one-photon forbidden 1S_{h,e}-1P_{h,e} transition. We examine signatures of carrier multiplication (multiexcitons for the single absorbed…
We present a magneto-optical study of individual self-assembled CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots doped with single Mn$^{2+}$ ions. Properties of the studied dots are analyzed analogously to more explored system of Mn-doped CdTe/ZnTe dots. Characteristic sixfold splitting of the neutral exciton emission line as well as its evolution in the magnetic field are described using a spin Hamiltonian model. Dynamics of both exciton recombination and Mn$^{2+}$ spin relaxation are extracted from a series of time-resolved experiments. Presence of a single dopant is shown not to affect the average excitonic lifetime…
Strong `spin'-orbit coupled one-dimensional hole gas is achievable in a Ge nanowire in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The strong magnetic field lifts the two-fold degeneracy in the hole subband dispersions, so that the effective low-energy subband dispersion exhibits strong `spin'-orbit coupling. Here, we study the electrical `spin' manipulation in a Ge nanowire quantum dot for both the lowest and second lowest hole subband dispersions. Using a finite square well to model the quantum dot confining potential, we calculate exactly the level splitting of the `spin'-orbit qubit and the R…
