We investigate the usefulness and viability of the scheme developed by Viola and Lloyd [Phys. Rev. A 58, 2733 (1998)] to control dephasing in the context of exciton-based quantum computation with self-assembled quantum dots. We demonstrate that optical coherence of a confined exciton qubit exposed to phonon-induced dephasing can be substantially enhanced through the application of a simple periodic sequence of control pulses. The shape of the quantum dot has a significant effect on the dephasing properties. Remarkably, we find that quantum dots with parameters optimized for implementing quantum computation are among the most susceptible to dephasing, yet periodic decoupling is most efficient for exactly that type of dot. We also show that the presence of an electric field, which is a necessary ingredient for many exciton-based quantum computing schemes, may further increase the control efficiency. Our results suggest that dynamical decoupling may be a method of choice for robust storage of exciton qubits during idle stages of quantum algorithms.
We demonstrate ultrafast dephasing in the random transport of light through a layer consisting of strongly scattering GaP nanowires. Dephasing results in a nonlinear intensity modulation of individual pseudomodes which is 100 times larger than that of bulk GaP. Different contributions to the nonlinear response are separated using total transmission, white-light frequency correlation, and statistical pseudomode analysis. A dephasing time of $1.2\pm 0.2$~ps is found. Quantitative agreement is obtained with numerical model calculations which include photoinduced absorption and deformation of indi…
We theoretically propose a biphoton entanglement-enhanced multidimensional spectroscopic technique as a probe for the dissipative polariton dynamics in the ultrafast regime. It is applied to the cavity-confined monomeric photosynthetic complex that represents a prototypical multi-site excitonic quantum aggregate. The proposed technique is shown to be particularly sensitive to inter-manifold polariton coherence between the two and one-excitation subspaces. It is demonstrated to be able to monitor the dynamical role of cavity-mediated excitonic correlations, and dephasing in the presence of phon…
We use a quantum-dynamical model to investigate the optical response of graphene under low excitation power. Ultrafast carrier relaxation processes, which play an important role for understanding the optical response of graphene, are included phenomenologically into the model. We obtain analytical solutions for the linear and third-order nonlinear optical response of graphene, and four-wave mixing in particular. This theory shows agreement with recently reported experimental data on linear complex optical conductivity and four-wave mixing, providing evidence for ultrafast quantum-dephasing tim…
We report the sub-picosecond initialization of a single heavy hole spin in a self-assembled quantum dot with >98.5 % fidelity and without external magnetic field. Using an optically adressable charge and spin storage device we tailor the relative electron and hole tunneling escape timescales from the dot and simultaneously achieve high-fidelity initialization, long hole storage times and high efficiency readout via a photocurrent signal. We measure electric field-dependent Rabi oscillations of the neutral and charged exciton transitions in the ultrafast tunneling regime and demonstrate that tu…
Employing the ultrafast control of electronic states of a semiconductor quantum dot in a cavity, we introduce a novel approach to achieve on-demand emission of single photons with almost perfect indistinguishability and photon pairs with near ideal entanglement. Our scheme is based on optical excitation off-resonant to a cavity mode followed by ultrafast control of the electronic states using the time-dependent quantum-confined Stark effect, which then allows for cavity-resonant emission. Our theoretical analysis takes into account cavity-loss mechanisms, the Stark effect, and phonon-induced d…
We present a theoretical formulation of the coherent ultrafast nonlinear optical response of a strongly correlated system and discuss an example where the Coulomb correlations dominate. We separate out the correlated contributions to the third-order nonlinear polarization, and identify non-Markovian dephasing effects coming from the non-instantaneous interactions and propagation in time of the collective excitations of the many-body system. We discuss the signatures, in the time and frequency dependence of the four-wave-mixing (FWM) spectrum, of the inter-Landau level magnetoplasmon (MP) excit…
Using three-pulse four-wave-mixing optical spectroscopy, we study the ultrafast dynamics of the quantum Hall system. We observe striking differences as compared to an undoped system, where the 2D electron gas is absent. In particular, we observe a large off-resonant signal with strong oscillations. Using a microscopic theory, we show that these are due to many-particle coherences created by interactions between photoexcited carriers and collective excitations of the 2D electron gas. We extract quantitative information about the dephasing and interference of these coherences.
Using a novel approach to ultrafast resonant pump-probe spectroscopy we investigate the spectral shape and dynamics of absorption features related to the A exciton in an hBN/MoSe$_2$/hBN van der Waals heterostructure. While in a pure two-level system a pump-probe experiment measures the occupation or the polarization dynamics, depending on the time ordering of the pulse pair, in the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) system both quantities get thoroughly mixed by strong exciton-exciton interaction. We find that for short positive delays the spectral lines experience pronounced changes in th…
We advance spin noise spectroscopy to an ultrafast tool to resolve high frequency spin dynamics in semiconductors. The optical non-demolition experiment reveals the genuine origin of the inhomogeneous spin dephasing in n-doped GaAs wafers at densities at the metal-to-insulator transition. The measurements prove in conjunction with depth resolved spin noise measurements that the broadening of the spin dephasing rate does not result from thermal fluctuations or spin-phonon interaction, as previously suggested, but from surface electron depletion.
Single-photon emitters in solid-state systems are important building blocks for scalable quantum technologies. Recently, quantum light emitters have been discovered in the wide-gap van der Waals insulator hBN. These color centers have attracted considerable attention due to their quantum performance at elevated temperatures and wide range of transition energies. Here, we demonstrate coherent state manipulation of a single hBN color center with ultrafast laser pulses and investigate in our joint experiment-theory study the coupling between the electronic system and phonons. We demonstrate that …
Semiconductor quantum dots are excellent candidates for ultrafast coherent manipulation of qubits by laser pulses on picosecond timescales or even faster. In inhomogeneous ensembles a macroscopic optical polarization decays rapidly due to dephasing, which, however, is reversible in photon echoes carrying complete information about the coherent ensemble dynamics. Control of the echo emission time is mandatory for applications. Here, we propose a novel concept to reach this goal. In a two-pulse photon echo sequence, we apply an additional resonant control pulse with multiple of 2pi area. Dependi…
We discuss a theory of the ultrafast non-linear optical response of excitons in the Quantum Hall system. Our theory focusses on the role of the low energy collective electronic excitations of the cold, strongly correlated, two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) present in the ground state. It takes into account ground state electron correlations and Pauli exchange and interaction effects between the photoexcited excitons and the collective excitations. Our formulation addresses both the initial coherent regime, where the dynamics is determined by exciton and 2DEG polarizations, and the subsequent…
The magnonic spin Seebeck effect is a key element of spin caloritronic, a field that exploits thermal effects for spintronic applications. Early studies were focused on investigating the steady-state nonequilibrium magnonic spin Seebeck current, and the underlying physics of the magnonic spin Seebeck effect is now relatively well established. However, the initial steps of the formation of the spin Seebeck current are in the scope of recent interest. To address this dynamical aspect theoretically we propose here a new approach to the time-resolved spin Seebeck effect. Our method exploits the su…
Strong spin-orbit interactions make hole quantum dots central to the quest for electrical spin qubit manipulation enabling fast, low-power, scalable quantum computation. Yet it is important to establish to what extent spin-orbit coupling exposes qubits to electrical noise, facilitating decoherence. Here, taking Ge as an example, we show that group IV gate-defined hole spin qubits generically exhibit optimal operation points, defined by the top gate electric field, at which they are both fast and long-lived: the dephasing rate vanishes to first order in electric field noise along all directions…
Ultrafast transmission changes around the fundamental trion resonance are studied after exciting a p-shell exciton in a negatively charged II-VI quantum dot. The biexcitonic induced absorption reveals quantum beats between hot trion states at 133 GHz. While interband dephasing is dominated by relaxation of the P-shell hole within 390 fs, trionic coherence remains stored in the spin system for 85 ps due to Pauli blocking of the triplet electron. The complex spectro-temporal evolution of transmission is explained analytically by solving the Maxwell-Liouville equations. Pump and probe polarizatio…
