We report the coherent manipulation of electron spins in a double quantum dot integrated with a micro-magnet. We performed electric dipole spin resonance experiments in the continuous wave (CW) and pump-and-probe modes. We observed two resonant CW peaks and two Rabi oscillations of the quantum dot current by sweeping an external magnetic field at a fixed frequency. Two peaks and oscillations are measured at different resonant magnetic field, which reflects the fact that the local magnetic fields at each quantum dot are modulated by the stray field of a micro-magnet. As predicted with a density matrix approach, the CW current is quadratic with respect to microwave (MW) voltage while the Rabi frequency (ν_Rabi) is linear. The difference between the ν_Rabi values of two Rabi oscillations directly reflects the MW electric field across the two dots. These results show that the spins on each dot can be manipulated coherently at will by tuning the micro-magnet alignment and MW electric field.
We demonstrate microwave manipulation of the spin states of electrically injected spin-polarized electrons in silicon. Although the silicon channel is bounded by ferromagnetic metal films, we show that moderate microwave power can be applied to the devices without altering the device operation significantly. Resonant microwave irradiation is used to induce spin rotation of spin-polarized electrons as they travel across a silicon channel, and the resultant spin polarization is subsequently detected by a ferromagnetic Schottky barrier spin detector. These results demonstrate the potential for co…
We consider theoretically a magnetic impurity spin driven by polarized electrons tunneling through a double quantum dot system. Spin blockade effect and spin conservation in the system make the magnetic impurity sufficiently interact with each transferring electron. As a results, a single collected electron carries information about spin change of the magnetic impurity. The scheme may develop all electrical manipulation of magnetic atoms by means of single electrons, which is significant for the implementation of scalable logical gates in information processing systems.
Holographic optical tweezers allow the three dimensional, dynamic, multipoint manipulation of micron sized dielectric objects. Exploiting the massive parallel architecture of modern GPUs we can generate highly optimized holograms at video frame rate allowing the interactive micro-manipulation of 3D structures.
Tailoring spin coupling to electric fields is central to spintronics and spin-based quantum information processing. We present an optimal micromagnet design that produces appropriate stray magnetic fields to mediate fast electrical spin manipulations in nanodevices. We quantify the practical requirements for spatial field inhomogeneity and tolerance for misalignment with spins, and propose a design scheme to improve the spin-rotation frequency (to exceed 50MHz in GaAs nanostructures). We then validate our design by experiments in separate devices. Our results will open a route to rapidly contr…
The manipulation of single spins in double quantum dots by making use of the exchange interaction and a highly inhomogeneous magnetic field was discussed in [W. A. Coish and D. Loss, Phys. Rev. B 75, 161302 (2007)]. However, such large inhomogeneity is difficult to achieve through the slanting field of a micromagnet in current designs of lateral double dots. Therefore, we examine an analogous spin manipulation scheme directly applicable to realistic GaAs double dot setups. We estimate that typical gate times, realized at the singlet-triplet anticrossing induced by the inhomogeneous micromagnet…
We report coherent manipulation of S=10 Fe$_{8}$ single-molecule magnets. The temperature dependence of the spin decoherence time $T_2$ measured by high frequency pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance indicates that strong spin decoherence is dominated by Fe$_{8}$ spin bath fluctuations. By polarizing the spin bath in Fe$_{8}$ single-molecule magnets at magnetic field $B$ = 4.6 T and temperature $T$ = 1.3 K, spin decoherence is significantly suppressed and extends the spin decoherence time $T_2$ to as long as 712 ns. A second decoherence source is likely due to fluctuations of the nuclear spi…
We demonstrate a possibility to manipulate the magnetic coupling between two nanomagnets with a help of ac electric field. In the scheme suggested the magnetic coupling in question is mediated by a magnetic particle contacting with both of the nanomagnets through the tunnel barriers. The electric field providing a successive suppression of the barriers leads to pumping of magnetization through the mediating particle. Time dependent dynamics of the particle magnetization allows to to switch between ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings.
Monolayer valley semiconductors, such as tungsten diselenide (WSe$_2$), possess valley pseudospin degrees of freedom that are optically addressable but degenerate in energy. Lifting the energy degeneracy by breaking time-reversal symmetry is vital for valley manipulation. This has been realized by directly applying magnetic fields or via pseudo-magnetic fields generated by intense circularly polarized optical pulses. However, sweeping large magnetic fields is impractical for devices, and the pseudo-magnetic fields are only effective in the presence of ultrafast laser pulses. The recent rise of…
We report the manipulation of nitrogen vacancy (NV) spins in diamond when nearby ferrimagnetic insulator, yttrium iron garnet, is driven into precession. The change in NV spin polarization, as measured by changes in photoluminescence, is comparable in magnitude to that from conventional optically detected magnetic resonance, but relies on a distinct mechanism as it occurs at a microwave frequency far removed from the magnetic resonance frequency of the NV spin. This observation presents a new approach to transferring ferromagnetic spin information into a paramagnet and then transducing the res…

In particular, the atom manipulation capability has evolved from fabricating individual nanostructures towards the scalable production of the atomic-sized devices bottom-up. The combination of precision synthesis and in situ characterization of the atomically precise structures has enabled direct v…
We investigate the non-resonant all-optical switching of magnetization. We treat the inverse Faraday effect (IFE) theoretically in terms of the spin-selective optical Stark effect for linearly or circularly polarized light. In the dilute magnetic semiconductors (Ga,Mn)As, strong laser pulses below the band gap induce effective magnetic fields of several teslas in a direction which depends on the magnetization and light wave vectors. Our theory demonstrates that the polarized light catalyzes the angular momentum transfer between lattice and the magnetization.
We demonstrate the use of high-Q superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) microresonators to perform rapid manipulations on a randomly distributed spin ensemble using very low microwave power (400 nW). This power is compatible with dilution refrigerators, making microwave manipulation of spin ensembles feasible for quantum computing applications. We also describe the use of adiabatic microwave pulses to overcome microwave magnetic field ($B_{1}$) inhomogeneities inherent to CPW resonators. This allows for uniform control over a randomly distributed spin ensemble. Sensitivity data are reported …
Strong `spin'-orbit coupled one-dimensional hole gas is achievable in a Ge nanowire in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The strong magnetic field lifts the two-fold degeneracy in the hole subband dispersions, so that the effective low-energy subband dispersion exhibits strong `spin'-orbit coupling. Here, we study the electrical `spin' manipulation in a Ge nanowire quantum dot for both the lowest and second lowest hole subband dispersions. Using a finite square well to model the quantum dot confining potential, we calculate exactly the level splitting of the `spin'-orbit qubit and the R…
The current through a helical edge state of a quantum-spin-Hall insulator may be fully transmitted through a magnetically gapped region due to a combination of spin-transfer torque and spin pumping [Meng {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 90}, 205403 (2014)]. Using a scattering approach, we here argue that in such a system the current is effectively carried by electrons with energies below the magnet-induced gap and well below the Fermi energy. This has striking consequences, such as the absence of shot noise, an exponential suppression of thermal noise, and an obstruction of thermal transport. F…
Solitons are very promising for the design of next generation of ultralow power devices for storage and computation. The key ingredient to achieve this goal is the fundamental understanding of their stabilization and manipulation. Here, we show how the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction (i DMI) is able to lift the energy degeneracy of a magnetic vortex state by stabilizing a topological soliton with radial chirality, hereafter called radial vortex. It has a non-integer skyrmion number S (0.5<|S|<1) due to both the vortex core polarity and the magnetization tilting induced by the i D…
In this paper we present result of theoretical calculation of entanglement within a spin structure of Gd3N@C80 under the in uence of rectangular impulses. Research is conducted using general spin Hamiltonian within SSNQ (spin system of N-qubits). Calculation of entanglement with variable impulse is performed using the time-dependent Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with spin-spin correlation function. We show that long rectangular impulse (t=850ps) can be used for maintaining of entanglement value. This allows us to offer a new algorithm which can be used to reduce the challenge of decoherence…
We predict very large changes in the room-temperature electroluminescence of thermally-activated delayed fluorescence organic light emitting diodes near patterned ferromagnetic films. These effects exceed the changes in a uniform magnetic field by as much as a factor of two. We describe optimal ferromagnetic film patterns for enhancing the electroluminescence. A full theory of the spin-mixing processes in exciplex recombination, and how they are affected by hyperfine fields, spin-orbit effects, and ferromagnetic fringe field effects is introduced, and is used to describe the effect of magnetic…
We show how the axial (chiral) anomaly induces a spin torque on the magnetization in magnetic Weyl semimetals. The anomaly produces an imbalance in left- and right-handed chirality carriers when non-orthogonal electric and magnetic fields are applied. Such imbalance generates a spin density which exerts a torque on the magnetization, the strength of which can be controlled by the intensity of the applied electric field. We show how this results in an electric control of the chirality of domain walls, as well as in an improvement of the domain wall dynamics, by delaying the onset of the Walker …
We demonstrate all-electrical spin generation and subsequent manipulation by two successive electric field pulses in an n-InGaAs heterostructure in a time-resolved experiment at zero external magnetic field. The first electric field pulse along the $[1\bar10]$ crystal axis creates a current induced spin polarization (CISP) which is oriented in the plane of the sample. The subsequent electric field pulse along [110] generates a perpendicular magnetic field pulse leading to a coherent precession of this spin polarization with 2-dimensional electrical control over the final spin orientation. Spin…
Magnonics and magnon spintronics aim at the utilization of spin waves and magnons, their quanta, for the construction of wave-based logic networks via the generation of pure all-magnon spin currents and their interfacing with electrical charge transport. The promise of efficient parallel data processing and low power consumption renders this field one of the most promising research areas in spintronics. In this context, the process of parallel parametric amplification, i.e., the conversion of microwave photons into magnons at one half of the microwave frequency, has proven to be a versatile to…
We demonstrate a simple method to manipulate and exfoliate thick hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) flakes using an atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever and tip mounted to a micromanipulator stage. Thick flakes of tens to hundreds of nanometers can be thinned down to large area, few-layer and monolayer flakes. We characterize the resulting thinned-down flakes using AFM and Raman spectroscopy. This technique is extendable to other two dimensional, van der Waals materials.
Fast quantum spin manipulation is needed to design spin-based quantum logic gates and other quantum applications. Here, we construct exact evolution operator of the nitrogen-vacancy-center (NV) spin in diamond under external magnetic fields and investigate the nonadiabatic geometric phases, both cyclic and non-cyclic, in these fast-manipulated NV spin systems. It is believed that the nonadiabatic geometric phases can be measured in future experiments and these fast quantum manipulations can be useful in designing spin-based quantum applications.
We consider the optical properties of a single magnetic impurity in a self-assembled quantum dot. We show that using the resonant pumping one can address and manipulate selectively individual spin states of a magnetic impurity. The mechanisms of resonant optical polarization of a single impurity in a quantum dot involve anisotropic exchange interactions and are different to those in diluted semiconductors. A Mn impurity can act as qubit. The limiting factors for the qubit manipulation are the electron-hole exchange interaction and finite temperature.
The controllable handling of an arbitrary single particle of matter with sub-100 nanometer (nm) dimensions is an essential but unsolved scientific challenge. We demonstrate nanoparticle-seeded glancing angle deposition using 10-100 nm diameter nanoparticle seeds (Er2O3, Fe@C, and Fe). The products are nanoparticle-nanowire heterostructures composed of arbitrary nanoscale tips attached to micron-length nanowire handles. Optical micromanipulation of the micron-scale handles enables concurrent manipulation of the attached nanoscale particles of matter.
The manipulation of small objects with light has become an indispensable tool in many areas of research ranging from physics to biology and medicine. Here we demonstrate how to implement micro-manipulation at the optimal level of efficiency for targets of arbitrary shape and inside complex environments such as disordered media. Our approach is to design wave-fronts in the far-field that have optimal properties in the near-field of the target such as to apply to it the strongest possible force, pressure or torque as well as to achieve the most efficient focus at the target position. Free of any…
We present an experimental demonstration as well as a theoretical model of an integrated circuit designed for the manipulation of a microwave field down to the single-photon level. The device is made of a superconducting resonator coupled to a transmission line via a second frequency-tunable resonator. The tunable resonator can be used as a tunable coupler between the fixed resonator and the transmission line. Moreover, the manipulation of the microwave field between the two resonators is possible. In particular, we demonstrate the swapping of the field from one resonator to the other by pulsi…
Architectures of donor-electron based qubits in silicon near an oxide interface are considered theoretically. We find that the precondition for reliable logic and read-out operations, namely the individual identification of each donor-bound electron near the interface, may be accomplished by fine-tuning electric and magnetic fields, both applied perpendicularly to the interface. We argue that such magnetic fields may also be valuable in controlling two-qubit entanglement via donor electron pairs near the interface.
We propose a device that can operate as a magneto-resistive switch or oscillator. The device is based on a spin-thermo-electronic control of the exchange coupling of two strong ferromagnets through a weakly ferromagnetic spacer. We show that the local Joule heating due to a high concentration of current in a magnetic point contact or a nanopillar can be used to reversibly drive the weak ferromagnet through its Curie point and thereby exchange-decouple the strongly ferromagnetic layers, which have an antiparallel ground state. Such a spin-thermionic parallel-to-antiparallel switching causes mag…
Manipulating micro-scale object plays paramount roles in a wide range of fundamental researches and applications. At micro-scale, various methods have been developed in the past decades, including optical, electric, magnetic, aerodynamic and acoustic methods. However, these non-contact forces are susceptible to external disturbance, and so finding a way to make micro-scale object manipulation immune to external perturbations is challenging and remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a method based on new trapping mechanism to manipulate micro-scale object in a gas flow at ambient conditions. We f…
Despite decades of research, the ultimate goal of nanotechnology--top-down manipulation of individual atoms--has been directly achieved with only one technique: scanning probe microscopy. In this Review, we demonstrate that scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is emerging as an alternative method for the direct assembly of nanostructures, with possible applications in plasmonics, quantum technologies, and materials science. Atomically precise manipulation with STEM relies on recent advances in instrumentation that have enabled non-destructive atomic-resolution imaging at lower elec…
We report on room-temperature coherent manipulation of the spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond and a study of its coherence as a function of magnetic field. We use magnetic resonance to induce Rabi nutations, and apply a Hahn spin echo to remove the effect of low-frequency dephasing. A sharp rise in the decoherence rate is observed at magnetic fields where the nitrogen-vacancy center spin couples resonantly to substitutional nitrogen spins via the magnetic dipolar coupling. Finally, we find evidence that away from these energy resonances spin flips of nitrogen electrons are the…
Controlling magnetism using voltage is highly desired for applications, but remains challenging due to fundamental contradiction between polarity and magnetism. Here we propose a mechanism to manipulate magnetic domain walls in ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic multiferroics using electric field. Different from those studies based on static domain-level couplings, here the magnetoelectric coupling relies on the collaborative spin dynamics around domain walls. Accompanying the reversal of spin chirality driven by polarization switching, a "rolling-downhill"-like motion of domain wall is achieved a…
We show that the magnetic state of individual manganese phthalocyanine (MnPc) molecules on a Bi(110) surface is modified when the Mn2+ center coordinates to CO molecules adsorbed on top. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we identified this change in magnetic properties from the broadening of a Kondo-related zero-bias anomaly when the CO-MnPc complex is formed. The original magnetic state can be recovered by selective desorption of individual CO molecules. First principle calculations show that the CO molecule reduces the spin of the adsorbed MnPc from S = 1 to S = 1=2 and strongly modifies…
We report simulations of a frustrated odd-numbered macrospin ring system, with full point dipolar interactions, driven by a rotating uniform applied magnetic field of constant magnitude. The system is designed with equally-spaced radially-aligned macrospins, which must carry a frustrated soliton defect in its ground state. It is shown how correctly tuning the applied field magnitude can allow for non-trivial unidirectional propagation of the soliton, the required directional pressure acquired via the curvature of the ring. Furthermore, the system, which may be employed as a multiple rotation c…
In this paper we introduce and analyze a new system design for quantum-dot-based qubits that simultaneously supports scalable one-qubit and two-qubit gates, and single-shot qubit measurement. All three key processes (one-qubit gates, two-qubit gates, and qubit measurement) rely on the interaction between the electron in each quantum dot and exciton-polaritons formed in a quantum well situated near the quantum dots. A key novel feature of our proposed system is the use of polariton traps, which we show enhances the quantum-dot--quantum-well interaction by a factor of 10 and consequently results…
High-spin paramagnetic manganese defects in polar piezoelectric zinc oxide exhibit a simple almost axial anisotropy and phase coherence times of the order of a millisecond at low temperatures. The anisotropy energy is tunable using an externally applied electric field. This can be used to control electrically the phase of spin superpositions and to drive spin transitions with resonant microwave electric fields.
Polyoxometalate single ion magnet [GdW$_{30}$P$_5$O$_{110}$]$^{12-}$ has been studied by generalized Rabi oscillation experiments. It was possible to increase the number of coherent rotations tenfold through matching the Rabi frequency with the frequency of the proton. Achieving high coherence with polyoxometalate chemistry, we show their excellent potential not only for the storage of quantum information but even for the realization of quantum algorithms.

The individual and coherent control of solid-state based electron spins is important covering fields from quantum information processing and quantum metrology to material research and medical imaging. Especially for the control of individual spins in nanoscale networks, the generation of strong, fast and localized magnetic fields is crucial. Highly-engineered devices that demonstrate most of the desired features are found in nanometer size magnetic writers of hard disk drives (HDD). Currently, however, their nanoscale operation, in particular, comes at the cost of excessive magnetic noise. Her…
Coherent control and manipulation of quantum degrees of freedom such as spins forms the basis of emerging quantum technologies. In this context, the robust valley degree of freedom and the associated valley pseudospin found in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides is a highly attractive platform. Valley polarization and coherent superposition of valley states have been observed in these systems even up to room temperature. Control of valley coherence is an important building block for the implementation of valley qubit. Large magnetic fields or high-power lasers have been used in th…
Current optical manipulation techniques rely on carefully engineered setups and samples. Although similar conditions are routinely met in research laboratories, it is still a challenge to manipulate microparticles when the environment is not well controlled and known a priori, since optical imperfections and scattering limit the applicability of this technique to real-life situations, such as in biomedical or microfluidic applications. Nonetheless, scattering of coherent light by disordered structures gives rise to speckles, random diffraction patterns with well-defined statistical properties.…
