Let M be a matroid representable over a (partial) field P and B a matrix representable over a sub-partial field P' of P. We say that B confines M to P' if, whenever a P-representation matrix A of M has a submatrix B, A is a scaled P'-matrix. We show that, under some conditions on the partial fields, on M, and on B, verifying whether B confines M to P' amounts to a finite check. A corollary of this result is Whittle's Stabilizer Theorem.
A combination of the Confinement Theorem and the Lift Theorem from arXiv:0804.3263 leads to a short proof of Whittle's characterization of the matroids representable over GF(3) and other fields.
We also use a combination of the Confinement Theorem and the Lift Theorem to prove a characterization, in terms of representability over partial fields, of the 3-connected matroids that have k inequivalent representations over GF(5), for k = 1, ..., 6.
Additionally we give, for a fixed matroid M, an algebraic construction of a partial field P_M and a representation A over P_M such that every representation of M over a partial field P is equal to f(A) for some homomorphism f:P_M->P. Using the Confinement Theorem we prove an algebraic analog of the theory of free expansions by Geelen et al.
Robust subsets of matroids were introduced by Huang and Sellier to propose approximate kernels for the matroid-constrained maximum vertex cover problem. In this paper, we prove that the bound for robust subsets of transversal matroids given by Huang and Sellier can be improved.
We prove a new exchange property for bases of a matroid that generalizes the multiple symmetric exchange property. For every bases $B_1,\dots,B_k$ of a matroid and a subset $A_1\subset B_1$ there exist subsets $A_2\subset B_2,\dots,A_k\subset B_k$ such that all sets $(B_i\setminus A_i)\cup A_{i-1}$ achieved by a cyclic shift of $A_i$'s by one are bases.
Can the real line with removed zero be covered by countably many linearly (algebraically) independent subsets over the field of rationals? We use a matroid approach to show that an answer is "Yes" under the Continuum Hypothesis, and "No" under its negation.
The principle of inclusion-exclusion is applied to subsets of maximal covectors contained in halfspaces of a simple oriented matroid and to convex subsets of its ground set for enumerating tope committees.

Given a root system $\mathsf{R}$, the vector system $\tilde{\mathsf{R}}$ is obtained by taking a representative $v$ in each antipodal pair $\{v, -v\}$. The matroid $M(\mathsf{R})$ is formed by all independent subsets of $\tilde{\mathsf{R}}$. The automorphism group of a matroid is the group of permutations preserving its independent subsets. We prove that the automorphism groups of all irreducible root systems matroids $M(\mathsf{R})$ are uniquely determined by their independent sets of size 3. As a corollary, we compute these groups explicitly, and thus complete the classification of the autom…
We consider some applications of our characterisation of the internally 4-connected binary matroids with no M(K3,3)-minor. We characterise the internally 4-connected binary matroids with no minor in some subset of {M(K3,3),M*(K3,3),M(K5),M*(K5)} that contains either M(K3,3) or M*(K3,3). We also describe a practical algorithm for testing whether a binary matroid has a minor in the subset. In addition we characterise the growth-rate of binary matroids with no M(K3,3)-minor, and we show that a binary matroid with no M(K3,3)-minor has critical exponent over GF(2) at most equal to four.
A three-tope committee K* for a simple oriented matroid M is a 3-subset of its maximal covectors such that every positive halfspace of M contains at least two topes from K*. We consider three-tope committees as the vertex sets of triangles in graphs associated with the topes and enumerate them making use of the properties of the poset of convex subsets of the ground set of M.
Oriented matroids can serve as a tool of modeling of collective decision-making processes in contradictory problems of pattern recognition. We present a generalization of the committee techniques of pattern recognition to oriented matroids. A tope committee for an oriented matroid is a subset of its maximal covectors such that every positive halfspace contains more than half of the maximal covectors from this subset. For a large subfamily of oriented matroids their committee structure is quite rich; for example, any maximal chains in their tope posets provide one with information sufficient to…
A matroid is Ingleton if all quadruples of subsets of its ground set satisfy Ingleton's inequality. In particular, representable matroids are Ingleton. We show that the number of Ingleton matroids on ground set $[n]$ is doubly exponential in $n$; it follows that almost all Ingleton matroids are non-representable.
Let $M$ be a matroid defined on a finite set $E$ and $L\subset E$. $L$ is locked in $M$ if $M|L$ and $M^*|(E\backslash L)$ are 2-connected, and $min\{r(L), r^*(E\backslash L)\} \geq 2$. Locked subsets characterize nontrivial facets of the bases polytope. In this paper, we give a new axiom system for matroids based on locked subsets. We deduce an algorithm for recognizing matroids improving the running time complexity of the best known till today. This algorithm induces a polynomial time algorithm for recognizing uniform matroids. This latter problem is intractable if we use an independence ora…
We prove that the ranks of the subsets and the activities of the bases of a matroid define valuations for the subdivisions of a matroid polytope into smaller matroid polytopes.
In this paper we show a variant of colorful Tverberg's theorem which is valid in any matroid: Let $S$ be a sequence of non-loops in a matroid $M$ of finite rank $m$ with closure operator cl. Suppose that $S$ is colored in such a way that the first color does not appear more than $r$-times and each other color appears at most $(r-1)$-times. Then $S$ can be partitioned into $r$ rainbow subsequences $S_1,\ldots, S_r$ such that $cl\,\emptyset\subsetneq cl\,S_1\subseteq cl\, S_2\subseteq \ldots \subseteq cl\,S_r$. In particular, $\emptyset\neq \bigcap_{i=1}^r cl\,S_i$. A subsequence is called rainb…
Let $\cX$ be a family of subsets of a finite set $E$. A matroid on $E$ is called an $\cX$-matroid if each set in $\cX$ is a circuit. We consider the problem of determining when there exists a unique maximal $\cX$-matroid in the weak order poset of all $\cX$-matroids on $E$, and characterizing its rank function when it exists.
Let M to be a matroid defined on a finite set E. A subset L of E is locked in M if L is 2-connected in M, the complement of L is 2-connected in the dual M*, and min{r(L), r*(complement of L)} is greater than 1. In this paper, we prove that the nontrivial facets of the bases polytope of M are described by the locked subsets. We deduce that finding the maximum-weight basis of M is a polynomial problem for matroids with a polynomial number of locked subsets. This class of matroids is closed under 2-sums and contains uniform matroids.
We show that in an ordered matroid the partial derivative \partial^{p+q}t/\partialx^p\partialyq of the Tutte polynomial is p!q! times the generating function of activities of subsets with corank p and nullity q. More generally, this property holds for the 3-variable Tutte polynomial of a matroid perspective.
If EE is a set of matroids, then ex(EE) denotes the set of matroids that have no minor isomorphic to a member of EE. If EE' is a subset of EE, we say that EE' is /superfluous/ if ex(EE - EE') - ex(EE) contains only finitely many 3-connected matroids. We characterize the superfluous subsets of six well-known collections of excluded minors.
Given an undirected graph, the non-empty subgraph polytope is the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of pairs (F, S) where S is a non-empty subset of nodes and F is a subset of the edges with both endnodes in S. We obtain a strong relationship between the non-empty subgraph polytope and the spanning forest polytope. We further show that these polytopes provide polynomial size extended formulations for independence polytopes of count matroids, which generalizes recent results obtained by Iwata et al. referring to sparsity matroids. As a byproduct, we obtain new lower bounds on the extens…
In the paper "Confinement of matroid representations to subsets of partial fields" (arXiv:0806.4487) we introduced the Hydra-k partial fields to study quinary matroids with inequivalent representations. The proofs of some results on these partial fields require extensive computations. This paper contains these computations, implemented in Mathematica.
Let $M$ be a representable matroid, and $Q, R, S, T$ subsets of the ground set. We prove that, if $M$ is sufficiently large, then there is an element $e$ such that deleting or contracting $e$ preserves both the $Q$-$R$ and the $S$-$T$ connectivities. For matroids representable over a finite field we prove a stronger result: we show that we can remove $e$ such that both a connectivity and a minor of $M$ are preserved.
In this work we present an algorithm to construct sparse-paving matroids over finite set $S$. From this algorithm we derive some useful bounds on the cardinality of the set of circuits of any Sparse-Paving matroids which allow us to prove in a simple way an asymptotic relation between the class of Sparse-paving matroids and the whole class of matroids. Additionally we introduce a matrix based method which render an explicit partition of the $r$-subsets of $S$, $\binom{S}{r}=\sqcup_{i=1}^{γ}\mathcal{U}_{i}$ such that each $\mathcal{U}_{i}$ defines a sparse-paving matroid of rank $r$.
A set $S\subseteq 2^E$ of subsets of a finite set $E$ is \emph{powerful} if, for all $X\subseteq E$, the number of subsets of $X$ in $S$ is a power of 2. Each powerful set is associated with a non-negative integer valued function, which we call the rank function. Powerful sets were introduced by Farr and Wang as a generalisation of binary matroids, as the cocircuit space of a binary matroid gives a powerful set with the corresponding matroid rank function. In this paper we investigate how structural properties of a powerful set can be characterised in terms of its rank function. Powerful sets …
Given a 3-connected biased graph $Ω$ with a balancing vertex, and with frame matroid $F(Ω)$ nongraphic and 3-connected, we determine all biased graphs $Ω'$ with $F(Ω') = F(Ω)$. As a consequence, we show that if $M$ is a 4-connected nongraphic frame matroid represented by a biased graph $Ω$ having a balancing vertex, then $Ω$ essentially uniquely represents $M$. More precisely, all biased graphs representing $M$ are obtained from $Ω$ by replacing a subset of the edges incident to its unique balancing vertex with unbalanced loops.
Let $\mathcal M$ be a class of matroids closed under minors and isomorphism. Let $N$ be a matroid in $\mathcal M$ with an exact $k$-separation $(A, B)$. We say $N$ is a $k$-decomposer for $\mathcal M$ having $(A, B)$ as an inducer, if every matroid $M\in \mathcal M$ having $N$ as a minor has a $k$-separation $(X, Y)$ such that, $A\subseteq X$ and $B\subseteq Y$. Seymour [3, 9.1] proved that a matroid $N$ is a $k$-decomposer for an excluded-minor class, if certain conditions are met for all 3-connected matroids $M$ in the class, where $|E(M)-E(N)|\le 2$. We reinterpret Seymour's Theorem in term…
Consider an integer associated with every subset of the set of columns of an $n\times k$ matrix. The collection of those matrices for which the rank of a union of columns is the predescribed integer for every subset, will be denoted by $X_C$. We study the equivariant cohomology class represented by the Zariski closure $Y_C$ of this set. We show that the coefficients of this class are solutions to problems in enumerative geometry, which are natural generalization of the linear Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces. We also show how to calculate these classes and present their basic prop…
Crapo introduced a construction of interval partitions of the Boolean lattice for sets equipped with matroid structure. This construction, in the context of graphic matroids, is related to the notion of edge activities introduced by Tutte. This implies that each spanning subgraph of a connected graph can be constructed from edges of exactly one spanning tree by deleting a unique subset of internally active edges and adding a unique subset of externally active edges. Since the family of vertex independent sets does not give rise to a matroid structure we can not apply Crapo's construction on th…

A simple binary matroid is called claw-free if none of its rank-3 flats are independent sets. These objects can be equivalently defined as the sets $E$ of points in $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,2)$ for which $|E \cap P|$ is not a basis of $P$ for any plane $P$, or as the subsets $X$ of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ containing no linearly independent triple $x,y,z$ for which $x+y,y+z,x+z,x+y+z \notin X$. We prove a decomposition theorem that exactly determines the structure of all claw-free matroids. The theorem states that claw-free matroids either belong to one of three particular basic classes of claw-free matroids,…
Let $P$ be a polytope. The hitting number of $P$ is the smallest size of a hitting set of the facets of $P$, i.e., a subset of vertices of $P$ such that every facet of $P$ has a vertex in the subset. An extended formulation of $P$ is the description of a polyhedron that linearly projects to $P$. We show that, if $P$ is the base polytope of any matroid, then $P$ admits an extended formulation whose size depends linearly on the hitting number of $P$. Our extended formulations generalize those of the spanning tree polytope given by Martin and Wong. Our proof is simple and short, and it goes throu…
Let X be a subset of an abelian group and a_1,...,a_h,a'_1,...,a'_h a sequence of 2h elements of X such that a_1 + ... + a_h = a'_1 + ... + a'_h. The set X is a Sidon set of order h if, after renumbering, a_i = a'_i for i = 1,..., h. For k \leq h, the set X is a generalized Sidon set of order (h,k), if, after renumbering, a_i = a'_i for i = 1,..., k. It is proved that if X is a generalized Sidon set of order (2h-1,h-1), then the maximal Sidon sets of order h contained in X have the same cardinality. Moreover, X is a matroid where the independent subsets of X are the Sidon sets of order h.
It follows by Bixby's Lemma that if $e$ is an element of a $3$-connected matroid $M$, then either ${\rm co}(M\delete e)$, the cosimplification of $M\delete e$, or ${\rm si}(M/e)$, the simplification of $M/e$, is $3$-connected. A natural question to ask is whether $M$ has an element $e$ such that both ${\rm co}(M\delete e)$ and ${\rm si}(M/e)$ are $3$-connected. Calling such an element "elastic", in this paper we show that if $|E(M)|\ge 4$, then $M$ has at least four elastic elements provided $M$ has no $4$-element fans and, up to duality, $M$ has no $3$-separating set $S$ that is the disjoint …
We present a strengthening of the countable Menger theorem (edge version) of R. Aharoni. Let $ D=(V,A) $ be a countable digraph with $ s\neq t\in V $ and let $\mathcal{M}=\bigoplus_{v\in V}\mathcal{M}_v $ be a matroid on $ A $ where $ \mathcal{M}_v $ is a finitary matroid on the ingoing edges of $ v $. We show that there is a system of edge-disjoint $ s \rightarrow t $ paths $ \mathcal{P} $ such that the united edge set of the paths is $ \mathcal{M} $-independent, and there is a $ C \subseteq A $ consists of one edge from each element of $ \mathcal{P} $ for which $ \mathsf{span}_{\mathcal{M}}(…
Dowling and Rhodes defined different lattices on the set of triples (Subset, Partition, Cross Section) over a fixed finite group G. Although the Rhodes lattice is not a geometric lattice, it defines a matroid in the sense of the theory of Boolean representable simplicial complexes. This turns out to be the direct sum of a complete matroid with a lift matroid of the complete biased graph over G. As is well known, the Dowling lattice defines the frame matroid over a similar biased graph. This gives a new perspective on both matroids and also an application of matroid theory to the theory of fini…
This article is a survey of matroid theory aimed at algebraic geometers. Matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear subspaces and hyperplane arrangements. Not all matroids come from linear subspaces; those that do are said to be representable. Still, one may apply linear algebraic constructions to non-representable matroids. There are a number of different definitions of matroids, a phenomenon known as cryptomorphism. In this survey, we begin by reviewing the classical definitions of matroids, develop operations in matroid theory, summarize some results in representability, and construc…
We introduce the notion of a matroid M over a commutative ring R, assigning to every subset of the ground set an R-module according to some axioms. When R is a field, we recover matroids. When R=$\mathbb{Z}$, and when R is a DVR, we get (structures which contain all the data of) quasi-arithmetic matroids, and valuated matroids i.e. tropical linear spaces, respectively. More generally, whenever R is a Dedekind domain, we extend all the usual properties and operations holding for matroids (e.g., duality), and we explicitly describe the structure of the matroids over R. Furthermore, we compute th…
We show that a random subset of the rank-$n$ projective geometry $\text{PG}(n-1,q)$ is, with high probability, not $(b,c)$-decomposable: if $k$ is its colouring number, it does not admit a partition of its ground set into classes of size at most $ck$, every transversal of which is $b$-colourable. This generalises recent results by Abdolazimi, Karlin, Klein, and Oveis Gharan (arXiv:2111.12436) and by Leichter, Moseley, and Pruhs (arXiv:2206.12896), who showed that $\text{PG}(n-1,q)$ is not $(1,c)$-decomposable, resp. not $(b,c)$-decomposable.
Let $M$ be a 3-connected matroid, and let $N$ be a 3-connected minor of $M$. A pair $\{x_1,x_2\} \subseteq E(M)$ is $N$-detachable if one of the matroids $M/x_1/x_2$ or $M \backslash x_1 \backslash x_2$ is both 3-connected and has an $N$-minor. This is the third and final paper in a series where we prove that if $|E(M)|-|E(N)| \ge 10$, then either $M$ has an $N$-detachable pair after possibly performing a single $Δ$-$Y$ or $Y$-$Δ$ exchange, or $M$ is essentially $N$ with a spike attached. Moreover, we describe the additional structures that arise if we require only that $|E(M)|-|E(N)| \ge 5$.
Let $G$ be a matrix and $M(G)$ be the matroid defined by linear dependence on the set $E$ of column vectors of $G.$ Roughly speaking, a parcel is a subset of pairs $(f,g)$ of functions defined on $E$ to an Abelian group $A$ satisfying a coboundary condition (that $f-g$ is a flow over $A$ relative to $G$) and a congruence condition (that the size of the supports of $f$ and $g$ satisfy some congruence condition modulo an integer). We prove several theorems of the form: a linear combination of sizes of parcels, with coefficients roots of unity, equals an evaluation of the Tutte polynomial of $M(G…
We establish the following splitter theorem for graphs and its generalization for matroids: Let $G$ and $H$ be $3$-connected simple graphs such that $G$ has an $H$-minor and $k:=|V(G)|-|V(H)|\ge 2$. Let $n:=\left\lceil k/2\right\rceil+1$. Then there are pairwise disjoint sets $X_1,\dots,X_n\subseteq E(G)$ such that each $G/X_i$ is a $3$-connected graph with an $H$-minor, each $X_i$ is a singleton set or the edge set of a triangle of $G$ with $3$ degree-$3$ vertices and $X_1\cup\cdots\cup X_n$ contains no edge sets of circuits of $G$ other than the $X_i$'s. This result extends previous ones of …
Classical designs and their (projective) q-analogs can both be viewed as designs in matroids, using the matroid of all subsets of a set and the matroid of linearly independent subsets of a vector space, respectively. Another natural matroid is given by the point sets in general position of an affine space, leading to the concept of an affine design. Accordingly, a t-(n, k, $λ$) affine design of order q is a collection B of (k-1)-dimensional spaces in the affine geometry A = AG(n-1, q) such that each (t-1)-dimensional space in A is contained in exactly $λ$ spaces of B. In the case $λ$ = 1, as u…
A clutter consists of a finite set and a collection of pairwise incomparable subsets. Clutters are natural generalisations of matroids, and they have similar operations of deletion and contraction. We introduce a notion of connectivity for clutters that generalises that of connectivity for matroids. We prove a splitter theorem for connected clutters that has the splitter theorem for connected matroids as a special case: if $M$ and $N$ are connected clutters, and $N$ is a proper minor of $M$, then there is an element in $E(M)$ that can be deleted or contracted to produce a connected clutter wit…
We show that a field extension $K\subseteq L$ in positive characteristic $p$ and elements $x_e\in L$ for $e\in E$ gives rise to a matroid $M^σ$ on ground set $E$ with coefficients in a certain skew hyperfield $L^σ$. This skew hyperfield $L^σ$ is defined in terms of $L$ and its Frobenius action $σ:x\mapsto x^p$. The matroid underlying $M^σ$ describes the algebraic dependencies over $K$ among the $x_e\in L$ , and $M^σ$ itself comprises, for each $m\in \mathbb{Z}^E$, the space of $K$-derivations of $K\left(x_e^{p^{m_e}}: e\in E\right)$. The theory of matroid representation over hyperfields was de…
We give the following extension of Barany's colorful Caratheodory theorem: Let M be an oriented matroid and N a matroid with rank function r, both defined on the same ground set V and satisfying rank(M) < rank(N). If every subset A of V with r(V - A) < rank (M) contains a positive circuit of M, then some independent set of N contains a positive circuit of M.
Let $M=(E,\mathcal B)$ be an $\mathbb F_q$-linear matroid; denote by ${\mathcal B}$ the family of its bases, $s(M;α)=\sum_{B\in\mathcal B}\prod_{e \in B} α_e$, where ${α_e\in \mathbb F_q}$. According to the Kontsevich conjecture stated in 1997, the number of nonzero values of $s(M;α)$ is a polynomial with respect to $q$ for all matroids. This conjecture was disproved by P. Brosnan and P. Belkale. In this paper we express the characteristic polynomial of the dual matroid $M^\perp$ in terms of the "correct" Kontsevich formula (for $\mathbb F_q$-linear matroids). This representation generalizes t…
A finite Coxeter group $W$ has a natural metric $d$ and if $\mathcal{M}$ is a subset of $W$, then for each $u\in W$, there is $q\in \mathcal{M}$ such that $d(u,q)=d(u,\mathcal{M})$. Such $q$ is not unique in general but if $\mathcal{M}$ is a Coxeter matroid, then it is unique, and we define a retraction $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}\colon W\to \mathcal{M}\subset W$ so that $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}(u)=q$. The $T$-fixed point set $Y^T$ of a $T$-orbit closure $Y$ in a flag variety $G/B$ is a Coxeter matroid, where $G$ is a semisimple algebraic group, $B$ is a Borel subgroup, and $T$ is a maxim…
Seymour's decomposition theorem for regular matroids is a fundamental result with a number of combinatorial and algorithmic applications. In this work we demonstrate how this theorem can be used in the design of parameterized algorithms on regular matroids. We consider the problem of covering a set of vectors of a given finite dimensional linear space (vector space) by a subspace generated by a set of vectors of minimum size. Specifically, in the Space Cover problem, we are given a matrix M and a subset of its columns T; the task is to find a minimum set F of columns of M disjoint with T such …
