We review the implementation of a model for multiple partonic interactions in Herwig++. Moreover, we show how recent studies on the colour structure of events in Herwig++ led to a significant improvement in the description of soft inclusive observables in pp interactions at the LHC.
In this paper we describe a new model of multiple partonic interactions that has been implemented in Herwig++. Tuning its two free parameters we find a good description of CDF underlying event data. We show extrapolations to the LHC.
The modelling of multiple parton interactions in Monte Carlo event generators is a crucial part not only for the dressing of signal processes but also to describe data with a minimum bias on the event selection. Much work has and will be put into the theoretical framework and the numerical implementation of these models. In this contribution, we summarize various changes to the machinery of multiparton interactions and related physics in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig 7.
We present a new model for soft interactions in the Monte Carlo event-generator Herwig. The soft diffractive final states are modeled on the basis of the cluster hadronization model and interactions between soft particles are modeled as multiple particle production with multiperipheral kinematics. We further present much improved results of mininum-bias measurements at different energies.
We introduce a new model for soft interactions in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig. We add a new model for the simulation of diffractive final states, based on the cluster hadronization model in Herwig. The soft component of the Multiple partonic interaction model is replaced by a refined model for soft gluon production. With these two components we are for the first time able to give a full simulation of minimum-bias events at hadron colliders. We briefly describe the models and present a few results obtained with it.
We present a new model for soft interactions in the event-generator Herwig. The model consists of two components. One to model diffractive final states on the basis of the cluster hadronization model and a second component that addresses soft multiple interactions as multiple particle production in multi- peripheral kinematics. We present much improved results for minimum-bias measurements at various LHC energies.
We describe the recent developments to extend the multi-parton interaction model of underlying events in Herwig++ into the soft, non-perturbative, regime. This allows the program to describe also minimum bias collisions in which there is no hard interaction, for the first time. It is publicly available from versions 2.3 onwards and describes the Tevatron underlying event and minimum bias data. The extrapolations to the LHC nevertheless suffer considerable ambiguity, as we discuss.
We review the modelling of multiple interactions in the event generator Herwig++ and study implications of recent tuning efforts to LHC data. A crucial ingredient to a successful description of minimum-bias and underlying-event observables is a model for colour reconnection. Improvements to this model, inspired by statistical physics, are presented.
In this contribution we describe the new model of multiple partonic interactions (MPI) that has been implemented in Herwig++. Tuning its two free parameters is enough to find a good description of CDF underlying event data. We show extrapolations to the LHC and compare them to results from other models.
We briefly review the status of the multiple partonic interaction model in the Herwig++ event generator. First, we show how a change in the colour structure of an event in Herwig++ results in a significant improvement in the description of soft inclusive observables in $pp$ interactions at $\sqrt{s}=900$ GeV. Then we present a comparison of some model results to ATLAS Underlying Event data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV.
The HERWIG 5.9 cluster hadronization model is briefly discussed here. It is shown that the model has peculiar behaviour when new heavy baryon resonances are included in the HERWIG 5.9 particle table. New fragmentation model is proposed to cure this problem and simple tuning of HERWIG 5.9 with this new model has been made using event shapes variables and identified particle momentum spectra in electron-positron interactions at LEPI. Finally, the predictions of the two hadronization models are compared.
We introduce an eikonal Monte Carlo model (running in conjunction with HERWIG) for simulating multiparticle production in hadron-hadron interactions. We compare our simulated data to the CDF Tevatron measurement of the underlying event activity in hard inelastic proton-antiproton scattering at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. By fixing the only free parameter in our model, the total hadron-hadron cross section, we find that our model describes the data better than either the HERWIG Underlying Event model or the Hard Multiparton model.
High-energy neutrino astronomy represents an open window both on astrophysical mechanisms of particle acceleration and on fundamental interactions. The possibility of detecting them in large earth-based apparatus, like AUGER, AMANDA, ANTARES, is quite challenging. In view of this, the capability of generating reliable simulations of air showers induced by neutrinos is mandatory in the analysis of experimental data. In this paper we describe preliminary results towards the development of a new version of the Monte Carlo CORSIKA, capable of handling neutrinos too as primary particles. In our app…
We review the modelling of multiple interactions in the event generator Herwig++ and study implications of recent tuning efforts to Tevatron and LHC data. It is often said that measurements of the effective cross section for double-parton scattering, sigma_effective, are in contradiction with models of the final state of multi-parton interactions, but we show that the Herwig++ model is consistent with both and gives stable predictions for underlying event observables at 14 TeV.
We review some aspects of multiple interactions in High Energy QCD; we discuss in particular AGK rules and present some results concerning multiple interactions in the context of jet production.
At the LHC Multiple Parton Interactions will represent an important feature of the minimum bias and of the underlying event and will give important contributions in many channels of interest for the search of new physics. Different numbers of multiple collision may contribute to the production of a given final state and one should expect important interference effects in the regime where different contributions have similar rates. We show, on the contrary, that, once multiple parton interactions are identified by their different topologies, terms with different numbers of multiple parton inter…
Modelling multiple partonic interactions in hadronic events is vital for understanding minimum-bias physics, as well as the underlying event of hard processes. A brief overview of the current Pythia 8 multiple interactions (MI) model is given, before looking at two additional effects which can be included in the MI framework. With rescattering, a previously scattered parton is allowed to take part in another subsequent scattering, while with enhanced screening, the effects of varying initial-state fluctuations are modelled.
Multiple parton interactions in a single proton-proton collision are expected to play an important role for many observables at LHC. To a large part their phenomenological description relies on rather simple and physically intuitive assumptions. We report on an investigation of multiple hard interactions in QCD, which aims at identifying to which extent this simple description arises from theory and where it needs to be extended. An approximate connection with generalized parton distributions may help elucidate some aspects of multiple-interaction dynamics.
Open issues on the structure of multiple interactions are outlined. An improved model is summarized, with a new approach to correlated parton densities in flavour, colour, longitudinal and transverse momenta, for both hard-scattering partons and beam-remnant ones.
We report on the development of a new model for the underlying event in hadron-hadron collisions. The model includes parton showers for all interactions, as well as non-trivial flavour, momentum, and colour correlations between interaction initiators and beam remnant partons.
Hadrons interaction at high energies is carried out by one color gluon exchange. All quarks and gluons contained in colliding hadrons take part in interaction and production of particles. The contribution of multiple parton interactions is negligible. Multiple hadrons production at high energies occurs only in three types of processes. The first process is hadrons production in gluon string, the second is hadrons production in two quark strings and the third is hadrons production in three quark strings. In proton-proton interaction production of only gluon string and two quark strings is possi…
In a simplified model of Multiple Parton Interactions the inclusive cross sections, of processes with large momentum transfer exchange, acquire the statistical meaning of factorial moments of the distribution in multiplicity of interactions, while more exclusive cross sections, which can provide complementary information on the interaction dynamics, become experimentally viable. Inclusive and exclusive cross sections are linked by sum rules, which can be tested experimentally.
I discuss the role played by multiple partonic interactions (MPI) in the early stages of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, for which a weak-coupling QCD description is possible. From the Color Glass Condensate, through the Glasma and into the Quark-Gluon-Plasma phase, MPI are at the origin of interesting novel QCD phenomena.
Multiple-parton interactions play a vital role in hadron-hadron collisions. This paper presents a study of the multiple-parton interactions with simulated Z + jets events in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The events are simulated with POWHEG followed by hadronization and parton-showering using PYTHIA 8. The events with dimuon invariant mass in the range of 60--120 GeV are selected for the analysis. The charged particle jets, having minimum transverse momentum of 5 GeV and absolute pseudo-rapidity less than 2, are used to construct the observables for measurement…
Recent experimental data have established some of the basic features of multiple interactions in hadron-hadron collisions. The emphasis is therefore now shifting, to one of exploring more detailed aspects. Starting from a brief review of the current situation, a next-generation model is developed, wherein a detailed account is given of correlated flavour, colour, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions, encompassing both the partons initiating perturbative interactions and the partons left in the beam remnants. Some of the main features are illustrated for the Tevatron and the LHC.
We propose a sophisticated framework for high-energy hadronic collisions, wherein different QCD physics processes are interleaved in a common sequence of falling transverse-momentum values. Thereby phase-space competition is introduced between multiple parton-parton interactions and initial-state radiation. As a first step we develop new transverse-momentum-ordered showers for initial- and final-state radiation, which should be of use also beyond the scope of the current article. These showers are then applied in the context of multiple interactions, and a few tests of the new model are presen…
We analyse the multiplicity distributions of charged particles at Tevatron (p\bar p) and LHC (pp) energies in the framework of the independent pair parton interactions (IPPI) model. It is shown that the number of soft pair parton interactions (and therefore the density of the partonic medium) is large and increases with energy. The mean multiplicity at each parton interaction grows also with energy. This growth depends on the width of the rapidity window. The similar conclusions are obtained in the multiladder exchange model (QGSM).
The LDC formalism for DIS can describe HERA structure functions, and also agrees well with CTEQ and MRST gluon distributions. It is also suitable for hadronic collisions, and provides a strong connection between ep and pp reactions. Some preliminary results are presented.
The expected rate for Multiple Parton Interactions (MPI) at the LHC is large. This requires an estimate of their impact on all measurement foreseen at the LHC while opening unprecendented opportunities for a detailed study of these phenomena. In this paper we examine the MPI background to top-antitop production, in the semileptonic channel, in the early phase of data taking when the full power of $b$--tagging will not be available. The MPI background turns out to be small but non negligible, of the order of 20% of the background provided by W+4j production through a Single Parton Interaction. …
DIS on a two nucleon system in the regge limit is considered. In this framework a review is given of a pQCD approach for the computation of the corrections to the inclusive one jet production cross section at finite number of colors and discuss the general results.
The sources of $W + n$-jet events in hadron collisions are higher-order QCD processes, but also multiple-parton interactions. A subprocess producing a $W + k$-jet final state, followed by one producing $l$ jets in the same nucleon-nucleon interaction, will result in a $W + n$-jet event if $k + l = n$. In the simplest case a $W + 2$-jet event can be produced by a quark-antiquark annihilation into $W$ and a 2-jet event occurring in the same proton-antiproton interaction. We compute that this happens at the 10% level of the higher-order QCD processes for the type of cuts made by the Tevatron expe…
Multi-parton distributions in a proton, the nonperturbative quantities needed to make predictions for multiple scattering rates, are poorly constrained from theory and data and must be modelled. All Monte Carlo event generators that simulate multiple parton interactions (e.g. Pythia) contain such a model of multi-parton PDFs. One important theoretical constraint for the case of double parton distributions is provided by the so-called number and momentum sum rules. In this paper we investigate to what extent the double parton distribution functions used in the Pythia event generator obey these …
Observations of rare processes containing large rapidity gaps at high energy colliders may be exceptionally informative. However the cross sections of these events are small in comparison with that for the inclusive processes since there is a large probability that the gaps may be filled by secondary particles arising from additional soft interactions or from gluon radiation. Here we review the calculations of the probability that the gaps survive population by particles from these effects for a wide range of different processes.
We investigate the combined effect of the repulsive vector interaction and the positive electric chemical potential on the chiral phase transition by considering neutral color superconductivity (CSC). The chiral condensate, diquark condensate and quark number densities are solved in both two-flavor and two-plus-one-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio(NJL) models with the so called Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft term under the charge neutrality constraint. We demonstrate that multiple chiral critical-point structures always exist in the NJL model within the self-consistent mean-field approximation and the nu…
Hadrons are composite objects made of quarks and gluons, and during a collision one can have several elementary interactions between the constituents. These elementary interactions, using an appropriate theoretical framework, can be related to the total and elastic cross sections. At high c.m. energy it also becomes possible to identify experimentally a high pt subset of the parton interactions and to study their multiplicity distribution. Predictions of the multiple interactions rates are difficult because in principle one needs to have a knowledge of the correlated Parton Distribution Functi…
In high energy collisions saturation and multiple collisions are most easily accounted for in transverse coordinate space, while analyses in momentum space have been more suitable for calculating properties of exclusive final states. In this talk I describe an extension of Mueller's dipole cascade model, which attempts to combine the good features of both these descriptions. Besides saturation it also includes effects of correlations and fluctuations, which have been difficult to account for in previous approaches. The model reproduces successfully total, elastic, and diffractive cross section…
We show that for hadronic transverse energy $E_T$ in hadron-hadron collisions, the classic Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) argument for the cancellation of Glauber gluons breaks down at the level of two Glauber gluons exchanged between the spectators. Through an argument that relates the diagrams with these Glauber gluons to events containing additional soft scatterings, we suggest that this failure of the CSS cancellation actually corresponds to a failure of the `standard' factorisation formula with hard, soft and collinear functions to describe $E_T$ at leading power. This is because the observa…
The leading twist theory of nuclear shadowing predicts the shadowing correction to nuclear parton distributions at small $x$ by connecting it to the leading twist hard diffraction in electron-nucleon scattering. The uncertainties of the predictions are related to the shadowing effects resulting from the interaction of the hard probe with $N \ge 3$ nucleons. We argue that the pattern of hard diffraction observed at HERA allows one to reduce these uncertainties. We develop a new approach to the treatment of these multiple interactions, which is based on the concept of the color fluctuations and …
Finite volume multiple-particle interaction is studied in a two-dimensional complex $ϕ^4$ lattice model. The existence of analytical solutions to the $ϕ^4$ model in two-dimensional space and time makes it a perfect model for the numerical study of finite volume effects of multi-particle interaction. The spectra from multiple particles are extracted from the Monte Carlo simulation on various lattices in several moving frames. The $S$-matrix of multi-particle scattering in $ϕ^4$ theory is completely determined by two fundamental parameters: single particle mass and the coupling strength of two-t…
Multiple interactions of quarks and gluons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions may give rise to interesting phemomena of color charges propagating in high-density QCD matter. We study the dynamics of multi-parton systems produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at energies corresponding the the CERN SPS and the future BNL RHIC experiments. Due to the complexity of the multi-particle dynamics we choose to employ the parton cascade model in order to simulate the development of multiple parton scatterings and associated stimulated emision processes. Our results indicate a non-linear increase with n…
The new precision era of jet quenching observables at both RHIC and the LHC calls for an improved and more precise description of in-medium gluon emissions. The development of new theoretical tools and analytical calculations to tackle this challenge has been hampered by the inability to include the effects of multiple scatterings with the medium using a realistic model for the parton-medium interactions. In this paper, we show how the analytical expressions for the full in-medium spectrum, including the resummation of all multiple scatterings, can be written in a form where the numerical eval…
The combined effect of the repulsive vector interaction and the positive electric chemical potential on the chiral phase transition is investigated by considering neutral color superconductivity. Under the charge-neutrality constraint, the chiral condensate, diquark condensate and quark number densities are obtained in two-plus-one-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the so called Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft term. We demonstrate that multiple chiral critical-point structures always exist in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model within the self-consistent mean-field approximation, and that the number of…
Multiple Parton Interactions are the tool to obtain information on the correlations between partons in the hadron structure. Partons may be correlated in all degrees of freedom and all different correlation terms contribute to the cross section. The contributions due to the different parton flavors can be isolated, at least to some extent, by selecting properly the final state. In the case of high energy proton-proton collisions, the effects of correlations in the transverse coordinates and in fractional momenta are, on the contrary, unavoidably mixed in the final observables. The standard way…
We present the equations of motion for multiple M0-brane (multiple M-wave or mM0) system in general eleven dimensional supergravity background. These are obtained in the frame of superembedding approach, but have a rigid structure: they can be restored from SO(1,1) x SO(9) symmetry characteristic for M0. BPS conditions for the 1/2 supersymmetric solution of these equations have the fuzzy 2-sphere solution describing M2-brane.
