In this contribution we describe the new model of multiple partonic interactions (MPI) that has been implemented in Herwig++. Tuning its two free parameters is enough to find a good description of CDF underlying event data. We show extrapolations to the LHC and compare them to results from other models.
We review the modelling of multiple interactions in the event generator Herwig++ and study implications of recent tuning efforts to LHC data. A crucial ingredient to a successful description of minimum-bias and underlying-event observables is a model for colour reconnection. Improvements to this model, inspired by statistical physics, are presented.
We present results obtained with the new Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++. In its first version (1.0), Herwig++ is capable of simulating e+e- Annihilation events. We compare results for different distributions with a vast amount of available data from e+e- annihilation.
The HERWIG event generator was widely used throughout the workshop, particularly in the emulation of Supersymmetric and Higgs processes in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We briefly review here its main features in this respect
Some results obtained with the new Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ are presented. In its first version (1.0), Herwig++ is capable of simulating e+e- Annihilation events. We discuss its relevance for future e+e- colliders and show results on the multiplicity of minijets.
Herwig 7 is a general-purpose Monte Carlo generator of particle collisions comprising both hard perturbative as well as soft phenomenological physics. Herwig is therefore capable to describe the entire final state of hadronized particles in a collision event. A spacetime topology of a parton system entering hadronization is fully described and tested for the first time. A combination of information from particles momenta and spacetime positions is utilized to minimize a boost-invariant distance measure of the parton system. We present a reasonable agreement of the model with a selection of exp…
We describe the implementation of supersymmetric processes in the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator. We define relevant parameter and mixing conventions and list the hard scattering matrix elements. Our implementation is based on the Minimum Supersymmetric Standard Model, with the option of R-parity violation. The sparticle spectrum is completely general. Both hadron-hadron and lepton-lepton collisions are covered. This article supplements a separate publication in which the general features of HERWIG 6.2 are described, and updates the treatment of supersymmetry to version 6.4.
A major new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 3.0) is now available. This release marks the end of distinguishing Herwig++ and HERWIG development and therefore constitutes the first major release of version 7 of the Herwig event generator family. The new version features a number of significant improvements to the event simulation, including: built-in NLO hard process calculation for all Standard Model processes, with matching to both angular-ordered and dipole shower modules via both subtractive (MC@NLO-type) and multiplicative (Powheg-type) algorithms; QED radiatio…
We describe the simulation of tau decays in the Herwig++ event generator, which includes sophisticated modelling of the hadronic currents and full treatment of spin correlation effects. The structure of the simulation makes it easy to add new models of tau decay, change the parameters of the existing models, and use the models from tau decay for the decay of other particles. The results are compared in detail with an existing simulation, and the benefits of the new structure are illustrated by considering the decay of the lightest chargino to the lightest neutralino in Anomaly-Mediated SUSY-Bre…
We propose changes to the colour reconnection model in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig in order to remove the quasi diffractive events from the soft multiple parton interactions. We then implement explicitly soft diffraction and show some preliminary results.
The modelling of multiple parton interactions in Monte Carlo event generators is a crucial part not only for the dressing of signal processes but also to describe data with a minimum bias on the event selection. Much work has and will be put into the theoretical framework and the numerical implementation of these models. In this contribution, we summarize various changes to the machinery of multiparton interactions and related physics in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig 7.
Herwig++ is the successor of the event generator HERWIG. In its present version 2.2.1 it provides a program for full LHC event generation which is superior to the previous program in many respects. We briefly summarize its features and describe present work and some future plans.
Results from the new Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ are presented. This first version simulates Hadron Emission Reactions With Interfering Gluons in electron-positron annihilation. The parton shower evolution is carried out using new evolution variables suited to describing radiation from heavy quarks as well as light partons. The partonic final state is fragmented into hadrons by means of an improved cluster hadronization model. The results are compared with a wide variety of data from LEP and SLC.
We describe the recent developments to extend the multi-parton interaction model of underlying events in Herwig++ into the soft, non-perturbative, regime. This allows the program to describe also minimum bias collisions in which there is no hard interaction, for the first time. It is publicly available from versions 2.3 onwards and describes the Tevatron underlying event and minimum bias data. The extrapolations to the LHC nevertheless suffer considerable ambiguity, as we discuss.
This paper describes the MC@NLO method for matching next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD with the parton shower and hadronization model of the Monte Carlo (MC) event generator tt Herwig++, for e+e- annihilation and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. Details of the event generation method as well as spin, flavour, momentum and colour assignments are presented. We obtain predictions for various distributions which arecompared with experimental data.
We describe the implementation details of the colour reconnection model in the event generator Herwig++. We study the impact on final-state observables in detail and confirm the model idea from colour preconfinement on the basis of studies within the cluster hadronization model. Moreover, we show that the description of minimum bias and underlying event data at the LHC is improved with this model and present results of a tune to available data.
We introduce a new model for soft interactions in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig. We add a new model for the simulation of diffractive final states, based on the cluster hadronization model in Herwig. The soft component of the Multiple partonic interaction model is replaced by a refined model for soft gluon production. With these two components we are for the first time able to give a full simulation of minimum-bias events at hadron colliders. We briefly describe the models and present a few results obtained with it.
With the advent and recent extension of the BLHA standard to interface Monte Carlo event generators and one-loop matrix element providers, the Herwig++ event generator has expanded its range of applicability to a multitude of underlying hard processes at NLO QCD. The new NLO development is centered around the Matchbox framework, which turns fixed NLO QCD calculations into parton shower matched calculations - to be matched to the two parton shower variants of Herwig++. Matchbox provides thereby for the automated setup of the underlying fixed NLO QCD calculations and the interface to the one-loo…
The AcerMC Monte Carlo generator gives a possibility to generate some of the Standard Model background processes which were recognised as very dangerous for the searches at LHC, and generation of which was either unavailable or not straightforward so far. The program itself provides a library of the massive matrix elements (coded by MADGRAPH) and native phase space modules for generation of a set of selected processes. The hard process event can be completed by the initial and final state radiation, hadronisation and decays through the existing interface with either PYTHIA 6.2 or HERWIG 6.3 ev…
In this paper we describe a new model of multiple partonic interactions that has been implemented in Herwig++. Tuning its two free parameters we find a good description of CDF underlying event data. We show extrapolations to the LHC.
A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.7) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: an interface to the Universal FeynRules Output (UFO) format allowing the simulation of a wide range of new-physics models; developments of the Matchbox framework for next-to-leading order (NLO) simulations; better treatment of QCD radiation in heavy particle decays in new-physics models; a new tune of underlying event and colour connection parameters that allows a good simultaneous description of both Tevatron and LHC underlying event data and th…
In this contribution we describe a new model of multiple partonic interactions that has been implemented in Herwig++. Tuning its two free parameters we find a good description of CDF underlying event data. We show extrapolations to the LHC and discuss intrinsic PDF uncertainties.
A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.1) is now available. This version includes a number of significant improvements including: an eikonal multiple parton-parton scattering model of the underlying event; the inclusion of Beyond the Standard Model physics; and a new hadronic decay model tuned to LEP data. This version of the program is now fully ready for the simulation of events in hadron-hadron collisions.
We review the implementation of a model for multiple partonic interactions in Herwig++. Moreover, we show how recent studies on the colour structure of events in Herwig++ led to a significant improvement in the description of soft inclusive observables in pp interactions at the LHC.
An overview is given of general-purpose event generators, especially PYTHIA and HERWIG. The current status is summarized, some recent physics improvements are described, and planned future projects are outlined.
We discuss the necessary steps for implementing an angularly ordered (AO) electroweak (EW) parton shower in Herwig 7 multi-purpose event generator. This includes calculating the helicity-dependent quasi-collinear EW branching functions that correspond to the full range of final-state EW parton shower, in addition to the initial-state EW gauge vector boson radiations. The results are successfully embedded in the AO Herwig 7 shower algorithm and have undergone a set of comprehensive and conclusive performance tests. Furthermore, we have used this EW parton shower algorithm, alongside the existin…
This manual describes version 1.0 of the Monte Carlo event generator KROWIG for deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering at HERA. KROWIG combines the implementation of QED radiative corrections in KRONOS with the QCD parton showers and cluster fragmentation of HERWIG.
The positive weight next-to-leading-order matching formalism (POWHEG) is applied to Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and the related Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion process in the Herwig++ Monte Carlo event generator. This scheme combines parton shower simulation and next-to-leading-order calculation in a consistent way which only produces positive weight events. The simulation contains a full implementation of the truncated shower required to correctly model soft emissions in an angular-ordered parton shower.
We study the behavior of the charged particle and energy components of the "underlying event" in hard scattering proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96TeV. The goal is to produce data on the "underlying event" that is corrected to the particle level so that it can be used to tune the QCD Monte-Carlo models without requiring CDF detector simulation. Unlike the previous CDF Run 2 "underlying event" analysis which used JetClu to define "jets" and compared uncorrected data with the QCD Monte-Carlo models after detector simulation (i.e., CDFSIM), this analysis uses the MidPoint jet algorithm and corr…
The AcerMC Monte Carlo generator is dedicated to the generation of Standard Model background processes which were recognised as critical for the searches at LHC, and generation of which was either unavailable or not straightforward so far. The program itself provides a library of the massive matrix elements (coded by MADGRAPH) and native phase space modules for generation of a set of selected processes. The hard process event can be completed by the initial and final state radiation, hadronisation and decays through the existing interface with either PYTHIA, HERWIG or ARIADNE event generators …
The HERWIG 5.9 cluster hadronization model is briefly discussed here. It is shown that the model has peculiar behaviour when new heavy baryon resonances are included in the HERWIG 5.9 particle table. New fragmentation model is proposed to cure this problem and simple tuning of HERWIG 5.9 with this new model has been made using event shapes variables and identified particle momentum spectra in electron-positron interactions at LEPI. Finally, the predictions of the two hadronization models are compared.
We present a new model for soft interactions in the event-generator Herwig. The model consists of two components. One to model diffractive final states on the basis of the cluster hadronization model and a second component that addresses soft multiple interactions as multiple particle production in multi- peripheral kinematics. We present much improved results for minimum-bias measurements at various LHC energies.
The new version 6.1 of the HERWIG event generator allows one to simulate hadronic final states in electron-positron annihilations using the $O(α_s^2)$ partonic matrix elements (MEs) for $e^+e^-\to q\bar qgg$ and $e^+e^-\to q\bar q Q\bar Q$. The consequent phenomenology is discussed in the case of four-jet signatures of particular relevance to future electron-positron Linear Colliders (LCs), such as in Higgs boson searches. The new approach adopted in HERWIG is compared to the standard $O(α_s)$ description, as well as to other recently presented event generators also based on $e^+e^-\to4$ parto…
We present a new model for soft interactions in the Monte Carlo event-generator Herwig. The soft diffractive final states are modeled on the basis of the cluster hadronization model and interactions between soft particles are modeled as multiple particle production with multiperipheral kinematics. We further present much improved results of mininum-bias measurements at different energies.
We investigate the simulation of events with gaps between jets with a veto on additional radiation in the gap in Herwig++. We discover that the currently-used random treatment of radiation in the parton shower is generating some unphysical behaviour for wide-angle gluon emission in QCD 2 to 2 scatterings. We explore this behaviour quantitatively by making the same assumptions as the parton shower in the analytical calculation. We then modify the parton shower algorithm in order to correct the simulation of QCD radiation.
We review the modelling of multiple interactions in the event generator Herwig++ and study implications of recent tuning efforts to Tevatron and LHC data. It is often said that measurements of the effective cross section for double-parton scattering, sigma_effective, are in contradiction with models of the final state of multi-parton interactions, but we show that the Herwig++ model is consistent with both and gives stable predictions for underlying event observables at 14 TeV.
HERWIG is a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator, which includes the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering and soft hadron-hadron collisions in one package. It uses the parton-shower approach for initial- and final-state QCD radiation, including colour coherence effects and azimuthal correlations both within and between jets. This article updates the description of HERWIG published in 1992, emphasising the new features incorporated since then. These include, in particular, the matching of first-order matrix elements with parton showers, a more corr…
We briefly review the status of the multiple partonic interaction model in the Herwig++ event generator. First, we show how a change in the colour structure of an event in Herwig++ results in a significant improvement in the description of soft inclusive observables in $pp$ interactions at $\sqrt{s}=900$ GeV. Then we present a comparison of some model results to ATLAS Underlying Event data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV.
A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.1) is now available. This version introduces a number of improvements, notably: multi-jet merging with the dipole shower at LO and NLO QCD; a new model for soft interactions and diffraction; improvements to mass effects and top decays in the dipole shower, as well as a new tune of the hadronisation parameters.
We use the POWHEG formalism in the Herwig++ event generator to match QCD real-emission matrix elements with the parton shower for a range of decays relevant to Beyond the Standard Model physics searches. Applying this correction affects the shapes of experimental observables and so changes the number of events passing selection criteria. To validate this approach, we study the impact of the correction on Standard Model top quark decays. We then illustrate the effect of the correction on Beyond the Standard Model scenarios by considering the invariant-mass distribution of dijets produced in the…
We study bottom-quark fragmentation in e+e- annihilation, top and Higgs decay H -> b bbar, using Monte Carlo event generators, as well as calculations, based on the formalism of perturbative fragmentation functions, which resum soft- and collinear-radiation effects in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. We consider the PYTHIA and HERWIG generators, and implement matrix-element corrections to the parton shower simulation of the H -> b bbar process in HERWIG. We tune the Kartvelishvili, string and cluster models to B-hadron data from LEP and SLD, and present results in both x_B and mo…
A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.6) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: a new structure for the implementation of next-to-leading order matrix elements; an improved treatment of wide-angle gluon radiation; new hard-coded next-to-leading order matrix elements for deep inelastic scattering and weak vector boson fusion; additional models of physics beyond the Standard Model, including the production of colour sextet particles; a statistical colour reconnection model; automated energy scaling of underlying-event tunes.
In this paper we describe Herwig++ version 2.3, a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collisions. A number of important hard scattering processes are available, together with an interface via the Les Houches Accord to specialized matrix element generators for additional processes. The simulation of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics includes a range of models and allows new models to be added by encoding the Feynman rules of the model. The parton-shower approach is used to simulate initial- and final-state Q…
HERWIG (Hadron Emission Reactions With Interfering Gluons) is a multipurpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of hard collisions between hadrons, leptons and photons. This note describes the new features of version 5.9. These include adding over 100 new particles, 1800 new decay modes and supporting new decay types. A complete space-time picture, including heavy meson mixing and secondary decays, is available for all event types and includes an optional colour rearrangement model. Initial state radition of photons in e^+e^- is is now included. Many other processes and features ha…
We introduce an eikonal Monte Carlo model (running in conjunction with HERWIG) for simulating multiparticle production in hadron-hadron interactions. We compare our simulated data to the CDF Tevatron measurement of the underlying event activity in hard inelastic proton-antiproton scattering at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. By fixing the only free parameter in our model, the total hadron-hadron cross section, we find that our model describes the data better than either the HERWIG Underlying Event model or the Hard Multiparton model.
We study the differences in the gamma ray spectra simulated by four Monte Carlo event generator packages developed in particle physics. Two different versions of PYTHIA and two of HERWIG are analyzed, namely PYTHIA 6.418 and HERWIG 6.5.10 in Fortran and PYTHIA 8.165 and HERWIG 2.6.1 in C++. For all the studied channels, the intrinsic differences between them are shown to be significative and may play an important role in misunderstanding dark matter signals.
An excess of events with a rapidity gap between jets, over what would be expected from non-diffractive processes, has been observed at HERA. A process based on a perturbative QCD calculation of colour singlet exchange has been added to HERWIG. With this addition, HERWIG is able to describe the number of events with a gap between jets over the number without a gap. This gap fraction is predicted to rise at large rapidity intervals between jets which would only be visible if the detector coverage were increased.
The production of vector bosons at present and future hadron colliders will provide a crucial test for QCD and Standard Model physics. In this paper we improve parton shower simulations of Drell-Yan processes by implementing matrix-element corrections to the initial-state radiation. We apply our work to the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator and compare our phenomenological results with the ones obtained using the previous version of HERWIG, with resummed calculations which we match to the exact first-order perturbative result, and with recent Tevatron data. We also make some predictions for j…
We describe the program HERWIRI2.1, which implements order alpha-squared photonic radiative corrections exponentiated at the amplitude level (initial state, final state, and initial-final interference) and electroweak corrections to the matrix element by generating events using the KK Monte Carlo to generate the hard process, with quark initial states generated according to PDFs via an LHAPDF interface. The events can be showered internally using HERWIG6.5 or exported and showered using any desired external showering program. Some early results are shown, including comparisons to HERWIG6.5 and…
High-energy neutrino astronomy represents an open window both on astrophysical mechanisms of particle acceleration and on fundamental interactions. The possibility of detecting them in large earth-based apparatus, like AUGER, AMANDA, ANTARES, is quite challenging. In view of this, the capability of generating reliable simulations of air showers induced by neutrinos is mandatory in the analysis of experimental data. In this paper we describe preliminary results towards the development of a new version of the Monte Carlo CORSIKA, capable of handling neutrinos too as primary particles. In our app…
This thesis presents results and method developments in both experimental and theoretical particle physics. The main part shows measurements of $\ell^+\ell^-\ell'^+\ell'^-$ production (where $\ell$, $\ell'$ is either an electron or a muon) in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy. The collisions were produced by the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016 and observed with the ATLAS detector. In a phase space sensitive to Z boson pair production, the integrated cross section as well as differential cross sections with respect to twenty-one observables are measured. Ten of the…
We study Matrix Element corrections as implemented in four popular event generators for hadron collisions. We compare PYTHIA, HERWIG, ALPGEN and SHERPA in the Z/gamma* inclusive production at LHC. PYTHIA and HERWIG are able to correct the first emission from the shower taking the Matrix Element calculation for one additional parton into account. SHERPA and ALPGEN are able to take into account Matrix Element corrections not only for one, but rather for several hard emissions from the incoming partons. This can be done at the price of introducing a separation cut to distinguish a Matrix Element …
This is the user's manual of MC@NLO.1.0. This package is a practical implementation, based upon the HERWIG event generator, of the recently proposed MC@NLO formalism for matching the next-to-leading order calculation of a QCD process with a parton-shower Monte Carlo simulation. The processes of standard-model vector boson pair production in hadronic collisions are available.
