Herwig 7 is a general-purpose Monte Carlo generator of particle collisions comprising both hard perturbative as well as soft phenomenological physics. Herwig is therefore capable to describe the entire final state of hadronized particles in a collision event. A spacetime topology of a parton system entering hadronization is fully described and tested for the first time. A combination of information from particles momenta and spacetime positions is utilized to minimize a boost-invariant distance measure of the parton system. We present a reasonable agreement of the model with a selection of experimental data and conclude that spacetime event topology can be meaningfully used in the further development.
We present a model for generating spacetime coordinates in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig 7, and perform colour reconnection by minimizing a boost-invariant distance measure of the system. We compare the model to a series of soft physics observables. We find reasonable agreement with the data, suggesting that $pp$-collider colour reconnection may be able to be applied in larger systems.
We describe the implementation details of the colour reconnection model in the event generator Herwig++. We study the impact on final-state observables in detail and confirm the model idea from colour preconfinement on the basis of studies within the cluster hadronization model. Moreover, we show that the description of minimum bias and underlying event data at the LHC is improved with this model and present results of a tune to available data.
We perform a detailed study of the sources of perturbative uncertainty in parton shower predictions within the Herwig 7 event generator. We benchmark two rather different parton shower algorithms, based on angular-ordered and dipole-type evolution, against each other. We deliberately choose leading order plus parton shower as the benchmark setting to identify a controllable set of uncertainties. This will enable us to reliably assess improvements by higher-order contributions in a follow-up work.
We discuss the necessary steps for implementing an angularly ordered (AO) electroweak (EW) parton shower in Herwig 7 multi-purpose event generator. This includes calculating the helicity-dependent quasi-collinear EW branching functions that correspond to the full range of final-state EW parton shower, in addition to the initial-state EW gauge vector boson radiations. The results are successfully embedded in the AO Herwig 7 shower algorithm and have undergone a set of comprehensive and conclusive performance tests. Furthermore, we have used this EW parton shower algorithm, alongside the existin…
We report on our exploration of matching matrix element calculations with the parton-shower models contained in the event generators HERWIG and Pythia. We describe results for e+e- collisions and for the hadroproduction of W bosons and Drell--Yan pairs. We compare methods based on (1) a strict implementation of ideas proposed by Catani, et al., (2) a generalization based on using the internal Sudakov form factors of HERWIG and Pythia, and (3) a simpler proposal of M. Mangano. Where appropriate, we show the dependence on various choices of scales and clustering that do not affect the soft and c…
We evaluate the theoretical uncertainties in next-to-leading order plus parton shower predictions for top quark pair production and decay in hadronic collisions. Our work is carried out using the Herwig 7 event generator and presents an in-depth study of variations in matching schemes with two systematically different shower algorithms, the traditional angular-ordered and alternative dipole shower. We also present all of the required extensions of the Herwig dipole shower algorithm to properly take into account quark mass effects, as well as its ability to perform top quark decays. The predict…
We investigate the simulation of events with gaps between jets with a veto on additional radiation in the gap in Herwig++. We discover that the currently-used random treatment of radiation in the parton shower is generating some unphysical behaviour for wide-angle gluon emission in QCD 2 to 2 scatterings. We explore this behaviour quantitatively by making the same assumptions as the parton shower in the analytical calculation. We then modify the parton shower algorithm in order to correct the simulation of QCD radiation.
We propose changes to the colour reconnection model in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig in order to remove the quasi diffractive events from the soft multiple parton interactions. We then implement explicitly soft diffraction and show some preliminary results.
We study the simulation of initial-state radiation in angular-ordered parton showers in order to investigate how different interpretations of the ordering variable affect the logarithmic accuracy of such showers. This also enables us to implement a recoil scheme which is consistent between final-state and initial-state radiation. We present optimal values of the strong coupling and intrinsic transverse momentum to be used in each version of the parton shower, tuned using $Z^0$-boson production at the LHC at 7 TeV. With these tuned showers, we perform a phenomenological study of the Drell-Yan p…
We review the modelling of multiple interactions in the event generator Herwig++ and study implications of recent tuning efforts to LHC data. A crucial ingredient to a successful description of minimum-bias and underlying-event observables is a model for colour reconnection. Improvements to this model, inspired by statistical physics, are presented.

Results from the new Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ are presented. This first version simulates Hadron Emission Reactions With Interfering Gluons in electron-positron annihilation. The parton shower evolution is carried out using new evolution variables suited to describing radiation from heavy quarks as well as light partons. The partonic final state is fragmented into hadrons by means of an improved cluster hadronization model. The results are compared with a wide variety of data from LEP and SLC.
A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.2) is now available. This version introduces a number of improvements, notably: improvements to the simulation of multiple-parton interactions, including diffractive processes; a new model for baryonic colour re-connection; spin correlations in both the dipole and angular-ordered parton showers; improvements to strangeness production; an improved choice of evolution variable in the angular-ordered parton shower; support for generic Lorentz structures in BSM models.
A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.1) is now available. This version includes a number of significant improvements including: an eikonal multiple parton-parton scattering model of the underlying event; the inclusion of Beyond the Standard Model physics; and a new hadronic decay model tuned to LEP data. This version of the program is now fully ready for the simulation of events in hadron-hadron collisions.
We briefly review the status of the multiple partonic interaction model in the Herwig++ event generator. First, we show how a change in the colour structure of an event in Herwig++ results in a significant improvement in the description of soft inclusive observables in $pp$ interactions at $\sqrt{s}=900$ GeV. Then we present a comparison of some model results to ATLAS Underlying Event data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV.
The positive weight next-to-leading-order matching formalism (POWHEG) is applied to Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and the related Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion process in the Herwig++ Monte Carlo event generator. This scheme combines parton shower simulation and next-to-leading-order calculation in a consistent way which only produces positive weight events. The simulation contains a full implementation of the truncated shower required to correctly model soft emissions in an angular-ordered parton shower.
This manual describes version 1.0 of the Monte Carlo event generator KROWIG for deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering at HERA. KROWIG combines the implementation of QED radiative corrections in KRONOS with the QCD parton showers and cluster fragmentation of HERWIG.
The new version 6.1 of the HERWIG event generator allows one to simulate hadronic final states in electron-positron annihilations using the $O(α_s^2)$ partonic matrix elements (MEs) for $e^+e^-\to q\bar qgg$ and $e^+e^-\to q\bar q Q\bar Q$. The consequent phenomenology is discussed in the case of four-jet signatures of particular relevance to future electron-positron Linear Colliders (LCs), such as in Higgs boson searches. The new approach adopted in HERWIG is compared to the standard $O(α_s)$ description, as well as to other recently presented event generators also based on $e^+e^-\to4$ parto…
In this contribution we describe the new model of multiple partonic interactions (MPI) that has been implemented in Herwig++. Tuning its two free parameters is enough to find a good description of CDF underlying event data. We show extrapolations to the LHC and compare them to results from other models.
In this paper we describe Herwig++ version 2.3, a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collisions. A number of important hard scattering processes are available, together with an interface via the Les Houches Accord to specialized matrix element generators for additional processes. The simulation of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics includes a range of models and allows new models to be added by encoding the Feynman rules of the model. The parton-shower approach is used to simulate initial- and final-state Q…
With the advent and recent extension of the BLHA standard to interface Monte Carlo event generators and one-loop matrix element providers, the Herwig++ event generator has expanded its range of applicability to a multitude of underlying hard processes at NLO QCD. The new NLO development is centered around the Matchbox framework, which turns fixed NLO QCD calculations into parton shower matched calculations - to be matched to the two parton shower variants of Herwig++. Matchbox provides thereby for the automated setup of the underlying fixed NLO QCD calculations and the interface to the one-loo…
We study Matrix Element corrections as implemented in four popular event generators for hadron collisions. We compare PYTHIA, HERWIG, ALPGEN and SHERPA in the Z/gamma* inclusive production at LHC. PYTHIA and HERWIG are able to correct the first emission from the shower taking the Matrix Element calculation for one additional parton into account. SHERPA and ALPGEN are able to take into account Matrix Element corrections not only for one, but rather for several hard emissions from the incoming partons. This can be done at the price of introducing a separation cut to distinguish a Matrix Element …
We implement matrix-element corrections to HERWIG parton shower simulations for Standard Model Higgs boson production at hadron colliders. We study the Higgs transverse momentum distribution and compare different versions of HERWIG and resummed calculations. The HERWIG results exhibit a remarkable improvement as many more events are generated at large transverse momentum after the inclusion of matrix-element corrections.
The modelling of multiple parton interactions in Monte Carlo event generators is a crucial part not only for the dressing of signal processes but also to describe data with a minimum bias on the event selection. Much work has and will be put into the theoretical framework and the numerical implementation of these models. In this contribution, we summarize various changes to the machinery of multiparton interactions and related physics in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig 7.
This paper describes the MC@NLO method for matching next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD with the parton shower and hadronization model of the Monte Carlo (MC) event generator tt Herwig++, for e+e- annihilation and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. Details of the event generation method as well as spin, flavour, momentum and colour assignments are presented. We obtain predictions for various distributions which arecompared with experimental data.
We introduce a new model for soft interactions in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig. We add a new model for the simulation of diffractive final states, based on the cluster hadronization model in Herwig. The soft component of the Multiple partonic interaction model is replaced by a refined model for soft gluon production. With these two components we are for the first time able to give a full simulation of minimum-bias events at hadron colliders. We briefly describe the models and present a few results obtained with it.
We calculate the fiducial and differential $W^{\pm}/Z^0+jet(s)$ production cross-sections in the presence of electroweak (EW) corrections through virtual loop contributions to the matrix elements (MEs) of the processes and real partonic cascade emissions. The calculations are carried out for proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, using Herwig 7 general-purpose Monte-Carlo event generator with leading-order or next-to-leading-order MEs that are interfaced with different parton-shower configurations. The results are compared with precision experimental measurements from ATLAS collabora…
A major new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 3.0) is now available. This release marks the end of distinguishing Herwig++ and HERWIG development and therefore constitutes the first major release of version 7 of the Herwig event generator family. The new version features a number of significant improvements to the event simulation, including: built-in NLO hard process calculation for all Standard Model processes, with matching to both angular-ordered and dipole shower modules via both subtractive (MC@NLO-type) and multiplicative (Powheg-type) algorithms; QED radiatio…
We describe the recent developments to extend the multi-parton interaction model of underlying events in Herwig++ into the soft, non-perturbative, regime. This allows the program to describe also minimum bias collisions in which there is no hard interaction, for the first time. It is publicly available from versions 2.3 onwards and describes the Tevatron underlying event and minimum bias data. The extrapolations to the LHC nevertheless suffer considerable ambiguity, as we discuss.
We review the modelling of multiple interactions in the event generator Herwig++ and study implications of recent tuning efforts to Tevatron and LHC data. It is often said that measurements of the effective cross section for double-parton scattering, sigma_effective, are in contradiction with models of the final state of multi-parton interactions, but we show that the Herwig++ model is consistent with both and gives stable predictions for underlying event observables at 14 TeV.
A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.7) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: an interface to the Universal FeynRules Output (UFO) format allowing the simulation of a wide range of new-physics models; developments of the Matchbox framework for next-to-leading order (NLO) simulations; better treatment of QCD radiation in heavy particle decays in new-physics models; a new tune of underlying event and colour connection parameters that allows a good simultaneous description of both Tevatron and LHC underlying event data and th…
In a previous paper, hereafter referred to as I, we have analyzed the 7 TeV LHC data on W + jets events from the standpoint of IR-improved DGLAP parton shower effects, using the IR-improved Herwiri1.031 parton shower MC in comparison with the Herwig6.5 parton shower MC in the context of the exact $O(α_s)$ matrix element matched parton shower framework provided by MG5\_aMC@NLO. In the current paper, we extend this analysis to the LHC 8 and 13 TeV data to investigate the energy dependence of the results obtained in I. Specifically, W~+ jet events are generated in the MADGRAPH5\_aMC@NLO framework…
A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.6) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: a new structure for the implementation of next-to-leading order matrix elements; an improved treatment of wide-angle gluon radiation; new hard-coded next-to-leading order matrix elements for deep inelastic scattering and weak vector boson fusion; additional models of physics beyond the Standard Model, including the production of colour sextet particles; a statistical colour reconnection model; automated energy scaling of underlying-event tunes.
HERWIG is a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator, which includes the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering and soft hadron-hadron collisions in one package. It uses the parton-shower approach for initial- and final-state QCD radiation, including colour coherence effects and azimuthal correlations both within and between jets. This article updates the description of HERWIG published in 1992, emphasising the new features incorporated since then. These include, in particular, the matching of first-order matrix elements with parton showers, a more corr…
The validity of local parton-hadron duality within the framework of HERWIG and JETSET event generators is investigated. We concentrate on ${\rm e}^{+}{\rm e}^{-}$ annihilations in LEP 2 energy range as these interactions provide theoretically the cleanest condition for the discussion of this concept.
We use the POWHEG formalism in the Herwig++ event generator to match QCD real-emission matrix elements with the parton shower for a range of decays relevant to Beyond the Standard Model physics searches. Applying this correction affects the shapes of experimental observables and so changes the number of events passing selection criteria. To validate this approach, we study the impact of the correction on Standard Model top quark decays. We then illustrate the effect of the correction on Beyond the Standard Model scenarios by considering the invariant-mass distribution of dijets produced in the…
We study the mismatch between a full calculation of non-global single-logarithms in the large-N_c limit and an approximation based on free azimuthal averaging, and the consequent angular-ordered pattern of soft gluon radiation in QCD. We compare the results obtained in either case to those obtained from the parton showers in the Monte Carlo event generators HERWIG and PYTHIA, with the aim of assessing the accuracy of the parton showers with regard to such observables where angular ordering is merely an approximation even at leading-logarithmic accuracy and which are commonly employed for the t…
Multi-parton interactions and color reconnection can produce QGP-like effects in small systems, specifically, radial flow-like patterns. For pp collisions simulated with Pythia 8.212, in this work we investigate their effects on different observables like event multiplicity, event shapes and transverse momentum distributions.
The resonance production in proton$-$proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 13 TeV have been investigated using Pythia 8 event generator within the framework of microscopic processes like color reconnection and rope hadronization. Specifically, the observable effects of different modes of color reconnections on the ratio of yields of mesonic and baryonic resonances with respect to their stable counterpart have been explored as a function of event activity. A suppression in the ratio is observed as a function of number of multi-partonic interactions for mesonic resonances. The $\mathrm{ϕ/K…
We present an extension to the colour reconnection model in the Monte-Carlo event generator Herwig to account for the production of baryons and compare it to a series of observables for soft physics. The new model is able to improve the description of charged-particle mutliplicities and hadron flavour observables in pp collisions
We study bottom-quark fragmentation in e+e- annihilation, top and Higgs decay H -> b bbar, using Monte Carlo event generators, as well as calculations, based on the formalism of perturbative fragmentation functions, which resum soft- and collinear-radiation effects in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. We consider the PYTHIA and HERWIG generators, and implement matrix-element corrections to the parton shower simulation of the H -> b bbar process in HERWIG. We tune the Kartvelishvili, string and cluster models to B-hadron data from LEP and SLD, and present results in both x_B and mo…
After an introduction to event generators we give an overview of developments in the field of joining matrix elements with parton showers. Starting with matrix element corrections, we also discuss implementations that match LO and NLO matrix elements with parton shower results correctly. Finally, the new Monte Carlo program Herwig++ is described. We report on its status of development and some major physics improvements.
The production of vector bosons at present and future hadron colliders will provide a crucial test for QCD and Standard Model physics. In this paper we improve parton shower simulations of Drell-Yan processes by implementing matrix-element corrections to the initial-state radiation. We apply our work to the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator and compare our phenomenological results with the ones obtained using the previous version of HERWIG, with resummed calculations which we match to the exact first-order perturbative result, and with recent Tevatron data. We also make some predictions for j…
We investigate the effects of keeping the full color structure for parton emissions in parton showers for both LEP and LHC. This is done within the Herwig 7 dipole shower, and includes gluon emission, gluon splitting, initial state branching processes, as well as hadronization. The subleading Nc terms are included as color matrix element corrections to the splitting kernels by evolving an amplitude-level density operator and correcting the radiation pattern for each parton multiplicity, up to a fixed number of full color emissions, after which a standard leading color shower takes over. Our re…
The production scale and internal structure of jets produced in high energy collisions are studied using Jetset7.4 and Herwig5.9 Monte Carlo generators. Two scales are found. One is the jet-development scale, which determines the size of the jet developed from a mother-parton. The other one is the jet-production scale, the jets produced with this scale are the most consistent with QCD jet-production dynamics and will provide the most reliable dynamical information about their mother-partons.
Spin correlations are an important, but often neglected, effect in modern Monte Carlo event generators. We show that they can be fully incorporated in Herwig 7 using the algorithm originally proposed by Collins and Knowles in all stages of the event generation process and between the different stages of the event generation. In this paper we present the final missing ingredient, correlations in both the angular-ordered and dipole shower algorithms and between the parton shower and hard production and decay processes.
Forward-backward multiplicity correlations have been studied in electron-positron, proton-proton and more recently in lead-lead collisions. For the proton-proton case, comparison of experimental results to different models reveals an incomplete understanding of the physical phenomenon associated with these correlations. In this work, we present a study of forward-backward multiplicity correlations in proton-proton collisions using the PYTHIA event generator, at LHC energies. A detailed analysis is presented with and without weak decays, splitting data samples into soft and hard QCD processes, …
The positive weight next-to-leading-order (NLO) matching scheme (POWHEG) is applied to Drell-Yan vector boson production in the Herwig++ Monte Carlo event generator. This approach consistently combines the NLO calculation and parton shower simulation, without the production of negative weight events. The simulation includes a full implementation of the truncated shower required to correctly describe soft emissions in an angular-ordered parton shower, for the first time. The results are compared with Tevatron W and Z production data and predictions for the transverse momentum spectrum of gauge …
We use HERWIRI1.031, a new Monte Carlo event generator for hadron-hadron scattering at high energies, to study the phenomenological effects of our approach of exact amplitude-based resummation in precision QCD calculations. W + jet(s) events with exact NLO QCD corrections are generated in the MG5_aMC@NLO framework and showered by both HERWIRI1.031 and HERWIG6.5 with PTRMS = 0 and PTRMS = 2.2 GeV/c, respectively. Here, PTRMS is the rms value of the intrinsic Gaussian transverse momentum distribution for the partons inside the proton. The differential cross sections for many observables are pres…
This is the user's manual of MC@NLO.1.0. This package is a practical implementation, based upon the HERWIG event generator, of the recently proposed MC@NLO formalism for matching the next-to-leading order calculation of a QCD process with a parton-shower Monte Carlo simulation. The processes of standard-model vector boson pair production in hadronic collisions are available.
Increasingly, with the data collected at the LHC we are confronted with the possible existence of flow in pp collisions. In this work we show that PYTHIA 8 produces flow-like effects in events with multiple hard subcollisions due to color string formations between final partons from independent hard scatterings, the so called color reconnection. We present studies of different identified hadron observables in pp collisions at 7 TeV with the tune 4C. Studies have been done both for minimum bias and multiplicity intervals in events with and without color reconnection to isolate the flow-like eff…
A new method to extract information from the pp data is proposed. The approach is based on the use of the event structure variables: sphericity and spherocity, to split the data into enhanced soft and hard processes samples corresponding to events with large and low numbers of multi-parton interactions, respectively. The present study was developed in the framework of Pythia 8.180 for inelastic pp collisions at sqrt(s) =7 TeV. As an application of the method, a study of the identified particle transverse momentum spectra and their ratios; is presented for soft (isotropic) and hard (jetty-like)…
