In this paper we describe Herwig++ version 2.3, a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collisions. A number of important hard scattering processes are available, together with an interface via the Les Houches Accord to specialized matrix element generators for additional processes. The simulation of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics includes a range of models and allows new models to be added by encoding the Feynman rules of the model. The parton-shower approach is used to simulate initial- and final-state QCD radiation, including colour coherence effects, with special emphasis on the correct description of radiation from heavy particles. The underlying event is simulated using an eikonal multiple parton-parton scattering model. The formation of hadrons from the quarks and gluons produced in the parton shower is described using the cluster hadronization model. Hadron decays are simulated using matrix elements, where possible including spin correlations and off-shell effects.
This manual describes version 1.0 of the Monte Carlo event generator KROWIG for deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering at HERA. KROWIG combines the implementation of QED radiative corrections in KRONOS with the QCD parton showers and cluster fragmentation of HERWIG.
A major new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 3.0) is now available. This release marks the end of distinguishing Herwig++ and HERWIG development and therefore constitutes the first major release of version 7 of the Herwig event generator family. The new version features a number of significant improvements to the event simulation, including: built-in NLO hard process calculation for all Standard Model processes, with matching to both angular-ordered and dipole shower modules via both subtractive (MC@NLO-type) and multiplicative (Powheg-type) algorithms; QED radiatio…
An overview is given of general-purpose event generators, especially PYTHIA and HERWIG. The current status is summarized, some recent physics improvements are described, and planned future projects are outlined.
A new version of the Monte Carlo program HERWIG (version 6.1) is now available. This note gives brief details of the new features relative to the previous version (5.9). A fully updated manual will follow shortly. The main new features are: supersymmetric processes (both R-parity conserving and R-parity violating) in hadron-hadron collisions; the new process e+e- to 4 jets; matrix element corrections to top decay and Drell-Yan processes; new soft underlying event options; updates to particle data tables; new LaTeX and html printout options.
We discuss recent improvement in the treatment of gluon radiation in top production and decay in e+e- processes according to the HERWIG event generator and show studies on the top mass reconstruction at the future Linear Collider.
We present a new approach for the simulation of Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics within the Herwig++ event generator. Our approach is more generic than previous methods with the aim of minimising the effort of implementing further new physics models. Spin correlations, which are important for BSM models due to new heavy fermions and bosons, are discussed and their effects demonstrated for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and Randall-Sundrum Model using our new framework.
We review the modelling of multiple interactions in the event generator Herwig++ and study implications of recent tuning efforts to LHC data. A crucial ingredient to a successful description of minimum-bias and underlying-event observables is a model for colour reconnection. Improvements to this model, inspired by statistical physics, are presented.
A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.0) is now available. This is the first version of the program which can be used for hadron-hadron physics and includes the full simulation of both initial- and final-state QCD radiation.
We use the POWHEG formalism in the Herwig++ event generator to match QCD real-emission matrix elements with the parton shower for a range of decays relevant to Beyond the Standard Model physics searches. Applying this correction affects the shapes of experimental observables and so changes the number of events passing selection criteria. To validate this approach, we study the impact of the correction on Standard Model top quark decays. We then illustrate the effect of the correction on Beyond the Standard Model scenarios by considering the invariant-mass distribution of dijets produced in the…
A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.7) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: an interface to the Universal FeynRules Output (UFO) format allowing the simulation of a wide range of new-physics models; developments of the Matchbox framework for next-to-leading order (NLO) simulations; better treatment of QCD radiation in heavy particle decays in new-physics models; a new tune of underlying event and colour connection parameters that allows a good simultaneous description of both Tevatron and LHC underlying event data and th…
The modelling of multiple parton interactions in Monte Carlo event generators is a crucial part not only for the dressing of signal processes but also to describe data with a minimum bias on the event selection. Much work has and will be put into the theoretical framework and the numerical implementation of these models. In this contribution, we summarize various changes to the machinery of multiparton interactions and related physics in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig 7.
A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.1) is now available. This version includes a number of significant improvements including: an eikonal multiple parton-parton scattering model of the underlying event; the inclusion of Beyond the Standard Model physics; and a new hadronic decay model tuned to LEP data. This version of the program is now fully ready for the simulation of events in hadron-hadron collisions.
Herwig 7 is a general-purpose Monte Carlo generator of particle collisions comprising both hard perturbative as well as soft phenomenological physics. Herwig is therefore capable to describe the entire final state of hadronized particles in a collision event. A spacetime topology of a parton system entering hadronization is fully described and tested for the first time. A combination of information from particles momenta and spacetime positions is utilized to minimize a boost-invariant distance measure of the parton system. We present a reasonable agreement of the model with a selection of exp…
A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.5) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: new next-to-leading order matrix elements, including weak boson pair production; a colour reconnection model; diffractive processes; additional models of physics beyond the Standard Model and new leading-order matrix elements for hadron--hadron and lepton--lepton collisions as well as photon-initiated processes.
HERWIG is a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator, which includes the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering and soft hadron-hadron collisions in one package. It uses the parton-shower approach for initial- and final-state QCD radiation, including colour coherence effects and azimuthal correlations both within and between jets. This article updates the description of HERWIG published in 1992, emphasising the new features incorporated since then. These include, in particular, the matching of first-order matrix elements with parton showers, a more corr…

This thesis describes the development of two independent computer programs, Herwig++ and Effective. Both of these programs are used for phenomenological predictions of high energy physics. Herwig++ is used to simulate events as measured at particle colliders. This thesis presents a new set of variables for parton shower evolution. These new variables retain the angular ordering feature of the variables found in the original HERWIG software, while improving the Lorentz invariance of the shower and improving the coverage of the phase space. Also developed is a new model for hadronization. By cha…

The production of vector bosons at present and future hadron colliders will provide a crucial test for QCD and Standard Model physics. In this paper we improve parton shower simulations of Drell-Yan processes by implementing matrix-element corrections to the initial-state radiation. We apply our work to the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator and compare our phenomenological results with the ones obtained using the previous version of HERWIG, with resummed calculations which we match to the exact first-order perturbative result, and with recent Tevatron data. We also make some predictions for j…

The main part shows measurements of $\ell^+\ell^-\ell'^+\ell'^-$ production (where $\ell$, $\ell'$ is either an electron or a muon) in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy. The collisions were produced by the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016 and observed with the ATLAS detector. In a phase space sensitive to Z boson pair production, the integrated cross section as well as differential cross sections with respect to twenty-one observables are measured. Ten of the…

We study the differences in the gamma ray spectra simulated by four Monte Carlo event generator packages developed in particle physics. Two different versions of PYTHIA and two of HERWIG are analyzed, namely PYTHIA 6.418 and HERWIG 6.5.10 in Fortran and PYTHIA 8.165 and HERWIG 2.6.1 in C++. For all the studied channels, the intrinsic differences between them are shown to be significative and may play an important role in misunderstanding dark matter signals.
We present a method for the inclusion of finite width effects in the simulation of Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics. In order to test the validity of the method we compare our results with matrix elements for a range of production and decay processes in the Standard Model, Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and Minimal Universal Extra Dimensions model (MUED). This procedure has been implemented in the Herwig++ event generator and will be available in a forthcoming release.
Hadronization is a complex quantum process whereby quarks and gluons become hadrons. The widely-used models of hadronization in event generators are based on physically-inspired phenomenological models with many free parameters. We propose an alternative approach whereby neural networks are used instead. Deep generative models are highly flexible, differentiable, and compatible with Graphical Processing Unit (GPUs). We make the first step towards a data-driven machine learning-based hadronization model by replacing a compont of the hadronization model within the Herwig event generator (cluster…

This document is self-contained, but we emphasise the main differences with respect to version 1.0.
A general introduction is given in chapter 1. Chapter 2 outlines the main features of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics and the theoretical motivations for going beyond it. We subsequently provide brief descriptions of a few popular models that aim to solve the issues that arise within the SM. In chapter 3 we describe the general Monte Carlo method and show how it can be used to construct a class of computational tools called Monte Carlo event generators. We describe the main generic features of event generators and how these are implemented in the HERWIG++ event generator. By applyi…
We summarize the recent progress in a new approach to precision LHC physics based on the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory as it relates to a new MC friendly exponentiated scheme for precision calculation of higher order corrections to LHC physics in which IR singularities from both QED and QCD are canceled to all orders in αand in α_s simultaneously in the presence of rigorous shower/ME matching. We present the first MC data comparing the implied new showers themselves with the standard ones using the HERWIG6.5 MC event generator as a test case at LHC energies.
The exchange of electroweak gauginos in the $t-$ or $u-$channel allows squark pair production at hadron colliders without color exchange between the squarks. This can give rise to events where little or no energy is deposited in the detector between the squark decay products. We discuss the potential for detection of such rapidity gap events at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Our numerical analysis is divided into two parts. First, we evaluate in a simplified framework the rapidity gap signal at the parton level. The second part covers an analysis with full event simulation using PYTHIA as we…
After an introduction to event generators we give an overview of developments in the field of joining matrix elements with parton showers. Starting with matrix element corrections, we also discuss implementations that match LO and NLO matrix elements with parton shower results correctly. Finally, the new Monte Carlo program Herwig++ is described. We report on its status of development and some major physics improvements.
Event generators play a crucial role in the exploration of LHC physics. This presentation summarizes news and plans for the three general-purpose pp generators HERWIG, PYTHIA and SHERPA, as well as briefer notes on a few other generators. Common themes, such as the matching and merging between matrix elements and parton showers, are highlighted. Other topics include a historical introduction, from the Lund perspective, and comments on the role of MCnet.
Monte Carlo Event Generators are important tools for the understanding of physics at particle colliders like the LHC. In order to best predict a wide variety of observables, the optimization of parameters in the Event Generators based on precision data is crucial. However, the simultaneous optimization of many parameters is computationally challenging. We present an algorithm that allows to tune Monte Carlo Event Generators for high dimensional parameter spaces. To achieve this we first split the parameter space algorithmically in subspaces and perform a Professor tuning on the subspaces with …
Cosmic rays interacting with the atmosphere allow for the probing of fundamental interactions at ultra-high energies. We thus obtain limits on strongly coupled new physics models via their imprints on cosmic-ray air showers. Using the Monte Carlo event generators Herwig and HERBVI, and the air shower simulator CORSIKA, to simulate such processes, we apply machine learning algorithms to the simulated observables to discriminate the events arising via new physics from the QCD background. We then use the signal and background discrimination performance to set potential limits on the cross section…
At $e^+e^-$ and $ep$ colliders, the large fluxes of almost on-shell photons accompanying the lepton beams lead to the photoproduction of jets. As the centre-of-mass energy is increased, regions of smaller $x$ in the parton densities are explored and these are regions of high parton density. As a result, the probability for more than one hard partonic scattering occurring in a single $γγ$ or $γp$ collision can become significant. This effect has been simulated using an eikonal prescription combined with the HERWIG Monte Carlo program. The possible effects of multiple hard interactions on event …

The PYTHIA program can be used to generate high-energy-physics `events', i.e. sets of outgoing particles produced in the interactions between two incoming particles. The objective is to provide as accurate as possible a representation of event properties in a wide range of reactions, with emphasis on those where strong interactions play a role, directly or indirectly, and therefore multihadronic final states are produced. The physics is then not understood well enough to give an exact description; instead the program has to be based on a combination of analytical results and various QCD-based …

We introduce shower deconstruction, a method to look for new physics in a hadronic environment. The method aims to be a full information approach using small jets. It assigns to each event a number chi that is an estimate of the ratio of the probability for a signal process to produce that event to the probability for a background process to produce that event. The analytic functions we derive to calculate these probabilities mimic what full event generators like Pythia or Herwig do and can be depicted in a diagrammatic way. As an example, we apply this method to a boosted Higgs boson produced…

We present a phenomenological study of the current status of the application of our approach of {\it exact} amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory to precision QCD calculations, by realistic MC event generator methods, as needed for precision LHC physics. We discuss recent results as they relate to the interplay of the attendant IR-Improved DGLAP-CS theory of one of us and the precision of exact NLO matrix-element matched parton shower MC's in the Herwig6.5 environment as determined by comparison to recent LHC experimental observations on single heavy gauge boson production and de…
This is the manual and user guide for the Rivet system for the validation and tuning of Monte Carlo event generators for high energy physics. As well as the core Rivet library, this manual describes the usage of the rivet program and the AGILe generator interface library. The depth and level of description is chosen for users of the system, starting with the basics of using validation code written by others, and then covering sufficient details to write new Rivet analyses and calculational components.

Monte Carlo event generators (MCEGs) are the indispensable workhorses of particle physics, bridging the gap between theoretical ideas and first-principles calculations on the one hand, and the complex detector signatures and data of the experimental community on the other hand. All collider physics experiments are dependent on simulated events by MCEG codes such as Herwig, Pythia, Sherpa, POWHEG, and MG5_aMC@NLO to design and tune their detectors and analysis strategies. The development of MCEGs is overwhelmingly driven by a vibrant community of academics at European Universities, who also tra…
MonChER is a Monte Carlo event generator for simulation of single and double charge exchange reactions in proton-proton collisions at energies from 0.9 to 14 TeV. Such reactions, $pp\to n+X$ and $pp\to n+X+n$, are characterized by leading neutron production. They are dominated by $π^+$ exchange and could provide us with more information about total and elastic $π^+ p$ and $π^+π^+$ cross sections and parton distributions in pions in the still unexplored kinematical region.

Following an explicit example, we present the chain of steps required for an event-by-event description of hadron production in high energy hadronic and nuclear collisions. We start from incoming nuclei, described in the Color Glass Condensate effective theory, whose collision creates the gluon fields of the glasma. Individual gluons are then sampled from the gluon fields' Husimi (smeared Wigner) distributions, and clustered using a new spacetime based algorithm. Clusters are fed into the Herwig event generator, which performs the hadronization, conserving energy and momentum. We discuss the p…
