We present a new model for soft interactions in the event-generator Herwig. The model consists of two components. One to model diffractive final states on the basis of the cluster hadronization model and a second component that addresses soft multiple interactions as multiple particle production in multi- peripheral kinematics. We present much improved results for minimum-bias measurements at various LHC energies.
We propose changes to the colour reconnection model in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig in order to remove the quasi diffractive events from the soft multiple parton interactions. We then implement explicitly soft diffraction and show some preliminary results.
A model for soft and diffractive scattering is presented which is incorporated seamlessly into the pre-existing MPI model in the Monte Carlo Event Generator Herwig. With the improved model we are able to describe general aspects of Minimum Bias and Underlying Event data.
We present a new model for soft interactions in the Monte Carlo event-generator Herwig. The soft diffractive final states are modeled on the basis of the cluster hadronization model and interactions between soft particles are modeled as multiple particle production with multiperipheral kinematics. We further present much improved results of mininum-bias measurements at different energies.
We introduce a new model for soft interactions in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig. We add a new model for the simulation of diffractive final states, based on the cluster hadronization model in Herwig. The soft component of the Multiple partonic interaction model is replaced by a refined model for soft gluon production. With these two components we are for the first time able to give a full simulation of minimum-bias events at hadron colliders. We briefly describe the models and present a few results obtained with it.
We describe the recent developments to extend the multi-parton interaction model of underlying events in Herwig++ into the soft, non-perturbative, regime. This allows the program to describe also minimum bias collisions in which there is no hard interaction, for the first time. It is publicly available from versions 2.3 onwards and describes the Tevatron underlying event and minimum bias data. The extrapolations to the LHC nevertheless suffer considerable ambiguity, as we discuss.
We review the implementation of a model for multiple partonic interactions in Herwig++. Moreover, we show how recent studies on the colour structure of events in Herwig++ led to a significant improvement in the description of soft inclusive observables in pp interactions at the LHC.
An excess of events with a rapidity gap between jets, over what would be expected from non-diffractive processes, has been observed at HERA. A process based on a perturbative QCD calculation of colour singlet exchange has been added to HERWIG. With this addition, HERWIG is able to describe the number of events with a gap between jets over the number without a gap. This gap fraction is predicted to rise at large rapidity intervals between jets which would only be visible if the detector coverage were increased.
We present a model for generating spacetime coordinates in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig 7, and perform colour reconnection by minimizing a boost-invariant distance measure of the system. We compare the model to a series of soft physics observables. We find reasonable agreement with the data, suggesting that $pp$-collider colour reconnection may be able to be applied in larger systems.
Herwig 7 is a general-purpose Monte Carlo generator of particle collisions comprising both hard perturbative as well as soft phenomenological physics. Herwig is therefore capable to describe the entire final state of hadronized particles in a collision event. A spacetime topology of a parton system entering hadronization is fully described and tested for the first time. A combination of information from particles momenta and spacetime positions is utilized to minimize a boost-invariant distance measure of the parton system. We present a reasonable agreement of the model with a selection of exp…
A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.1) is now available. This version introduces a number of improvements, notably: multi-jet merging with the dipole shower at LO and NLO QCD; a new model for soft interactions and diffraction; improvements to mass effects and top decays in the dipole shower, as well as a new tune of the hadronisation parameters.
The positive weight next-to-leading-order matching formalism (POWHEG) is applied to Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and the related Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion process in the Herwig++ Monte Carlo event generator. This scheme combines parton shower simulation and next-to-leading-order calculation in a consistent way which only produces positive weight events. The simulation contains a full implementation of the truncated shower required to correctly model soft emissions in an angular-ordered parton shower.
We investigate diffractive events in hadron-hadron collisions, in which two jets are produced and separated by a large rapidity gap. Using a renormalisation-group improved NLL kernel implemented in the HERWIG Monte Carlo program, we show that the BFKL predictions are in good agreement with the Tevatron data, and present predictions which could be tested at the LHC.

We briefly present the soft colour interaction models which are successful in reproducing a multitude of diffractive hard scattering data, and give predictions for diffractive Higgs production at the Tevatron and LHC. Only a few diffractive Higgs events may be produced at the Tevatron, but we predict a substantial rate at the LHC.
Experimental results from HERA on diffractive vector meson production and their theoretical interpretation within microscopic QCD are reviewed with an emphasis on the BFKL color dipole and kt-factorization approaches.
The basic ideas and some results of the semiclassical approach to diffractive DIS are briefly described. In the production of high-$p_{\perp}$ jets boson-gluon fusion is predicted to be the dominant partonic process. The $p_{\perp}$-spectrum and the two-jet invariant mass distribution provide a clear test of the underlying `hard' partonic process and the `soft' mechanism of colour neutralization.
A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.3) is now available. This version includes a number of improvements including: the extension of the program to lepton-hadron collisions; the inclusion of several processes accurate at next-to-leading order in the POsitive Weight Hardest Emission Generator (POWHEG) scheme; the inclusion of three-body decays and finite-width effects in Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics processes; a new procedure for reconstructing the kinematics of the parton shower based on the colour structure of the hard scattering process; a new model for bar…
We make a brief presentation of the soft colour interactions models, the Soft Colour Interaction and the Generalised Area Law, and summarise the results when they are applied to p-pbar scattering. The models give a good description of the Tevatron data on production of W, bottom and jets in diffractive events, as well as jets with two rapidity gaps, alternatively leading particles. We also give predictions for diffractive J/psi production and discuss diffractive Higgs production at the Tevatron and LHC.
We discuss our model for soft colour interactions and present results on the diffractive structure function $F_2^D(β,x_\pom,Q^2)$ and inclusive transverse energy flows, which agree with available HERA data.
The topical subject of Higgs production in diffractive hard scattering events at the Tevatron and LHC is discussed. This has been proposed as a Higgs discovery channel with appealing experimental features. Predictions are obtained from the Soft Colour Interaction model, where rapidity gaps are created by a new soft interaction added to the normal hard scattering processes, implemented in the Monte Carlo event generator PYTHIA. A brief review of the successful application of the model to describe all CDF and DO data on diffractive hard scattering, such as production of W/Z, dijets, beauty and J…
Diffractive hard scattering is interpreted as the effect of soft gluon exchanges between the emerging energetic quarks and the nucleon's color field, resulting in an overall color singlet exchange. Summing multiple gluon exchanges to all orders leads to exponentiation and an amplitude in analytic form. Numerical evaluation reproduces the precise HERA data and gives new insights on the density of gluons in the proton.
Single diffractive Drell-Yan reaction in hadron-hadron collisions is considered as an important source of information on the properties of soft QCD interactions. In particular, it provides an access to the dynamics of the QCD factorisation breaking due to the interplay between hard and soft interactions which leads to a nontrivial energy and scale dependence of the Drell-Yan observables. We study the process at forward rapidities in high energy proton-(anti)proton collisions in the color dipole approach. Predictions for the total and differential cross sections of the diffractive lepton pair p…
We evaluate the non-perturbative contribution to the double-diffractive production of the Higgs boson, which arises due to the QCD scale anomaly if the mass of the Higgs M_H is smaller than the mass of the top quark M_T, M_H < M_T. The cross section appears to be larger than expected from perturbative calculations; we find σ_H = 0.019 - 0.14 pbarn at the Tevatron energy, and σ_H = 0.01 - 0.27 pbarn at the energy of the LHC.
An improved understanding of nonperturbative QCD can be obtained by the recently developed soft color interaction models. Their essence is the variation of color string-field topologies, giving a unified description of final states in high energy interactions, e.g., diffractive and nondiffractive events in ep and ppbar. Here we present a detailed study of such models (the soft color interaction model and the generalized area law model) applied to ppbar, considering also the general problem of the underlying event including beam particle remnants. With models tuned to HERA ep data, we find a go…
We briefly review the status of the multiple partonic interaction model in the Herwig++ event generator. First, we show how a change in the colour structure of an event in Herwig++ results in a significant improvement in the description of soft inclusive observables in $pp$ interactions at $\sqrt{s}=900$ GeV. Then we present a comparison of some model results to ATLAS Underlying Event data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV.
It is proposed, that color-singlet gluon-clusters can be formed in hadrons as a consequence of self-organized criticality (SOC) in systems of interacting soft gluons, and that the properties of such spatiotemporal complexities can be probed experimentally by examing inelastic diffractive scattering. Theoretical arguments and experimental evidences supporting the proposed picture are presented --- together with the result of a systematic analysis of the existing data for inelastic diffractive scattering processes performed at different incident energies, and/or by using different beam-particles…
A Pomeron model applicable to both "`soft" and "hard" processes is suggested and tested against the high-energy data from virtual photon-induced reactions. The Pomeron is universal, containing two terms, a "soft" and a "hard" one, whose relative weight varies with $\widetilde {Q^2}=Q^2+M_V^2$, where $Q^2$ is the virtuality of the incoming photon and $M_V$ is the mass of the produced vector particle. With a small number of adjustable parameters, the model fits all available data on vector meson production and deeply virtual Compton scattering from HERA. Furthermore, we attempt to apply the mode…
We propose a model to describe diffractive events in hadron-hadron collisions where a rapidity gap is surrounded by two jets. The hard color-singlet object exchanged in the t-channel and responsible for the rapidity gap is described by the pQCD Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov Pomeron, including corrections due to next-to-leading logarithms. We allow the rapidity gap to be smaller than the inter-jet rapidity interval, and the corresponding soft radiation is modeled using the HERWIG Monte Carlo. Our model is able to reproduce all Tevatron data, and allows to estimate the jet-gap-jet cross section …
The contribution of subleading reggeons to the diffractive structure function ${dF_{2}^D / dx_{\funp} dt}$ is estimated from the soft physics data. This contribution leads in a natural way to the violation of the factorization property of the diffractive structure function.
Disentangle the hard and soft dynamics in diffractive DIS is one of the main open questions of the strong interactions. We propose the study of the logarithmic slope in $Q^2$ of the diffractive structure function as a potential observable to discriminate between the Regge and the QCD-based approaches. Our results indicate that a future experimental analyzes could evidentiate the leading dynamics at $ep$ diffractive processes in the HERA kinematical regime.
A selected review of topics at the border of hard and soft physics is given. Particular emphasis is a placed on diffraction dissociation at Fermilab and HERA. Recently, significant differences between diffraction dissociation at HERA and at Fermilab have become apparent. This may suggest that one already is reaching nonlinear (unitarity) effects which are extending from the soft physics region into the semihard regime of QCD.
We present a formalism for high energy soft processes, mediated by Pomerons, which embodies pion-loop insertions in the Pomeron trajectory, rescattering effects via a two-channel eikonal and high-mass diffractive dissociation. It describes all the main features of the data throughout the ISR to Tevatron energy interval. We give predictions for soft diffractive phenomena at the LHC energy, and we calculate the different survival probabilities of rapidity gaps which occur in various diffractive processes.
We study bottom-quark fragmentation in e+e- annihilation, top and Higgs decay H -> b bbar, using Monte Carlo event generators, as well as calculations, based on the formalism of perturbative fragmentation functions, which resum soft- and collinear-radiation effects in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. We consider the PYTHIA and HERWIG generators, and implement matrix-element corrections to the parton shower simulation of the H -> b bbar process in HERWIG. We tune the Kartvelishvili, string and cluster models to B-hadron data from LEP and SLD, and present results in both x_B and mo…
We consider the central exclusive production of high $E_T$ jets $pp\to p+(X+{\rm dijet})+p$. In particular we study the possible contamination of the purely exclusive signal by semi-exclusive production where no other secondaries are emitted in one hemisphere, between the highest $E_T$ dijet and the recoil proton, while in the other hemisphere a third jet, plus possibly additional hadron activity, is allowed, but still separated from the incoming proton by a large rapidity gap. This process arising from the fusion of a hard and a soft Pomeron has not been considered before. It turns out that i…
The model of soft diffractive dissociation proposed some time ago by Miettinen and Pumplin is shown to describe correctly the data at FERMILAB energies. The comparison with Goulianos model of renor malized pomeron flux is also presented.
On the basis of the experimental data on diffractive processes in $πp$, $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions at intermediate, moderately high and high energies, we restore the scattering amplitude related to the $t$-channel exchange by vacuum quantum numbers by taking account of the diffractive $s$-channel rescatterings. At intermediate and moderately high energies, the $t$-channel exchange amplitude turns, with a good accuracy, into an effective pomeron which renders the results of the additive quark model. At superhigh energies the scattering amplitude provides a Froissart-type behaviour, with an …
We review QCD based descriptions of diffractive deep inelastic scattering emphasising the role of models with parton saturation. These models provide natural explanation of such experimentally observed facts as the constant ratio of the diffractive and total cross sections as a function of the Bjorken variable, and Regge factorization of diffractive parton distributions. The Ingelman-Schlein model and the soft color interaction model are also presented.
Improved possibilities to find the Higgs boson in diffractive events, having less hadronic activity, depend on whether the cross section is large enough. Based on the soft color interaction models that successfully describe diffractive hard scattering at HERA and the Tevatron, we find that only a few diffractive Higgs events may be produced at the Tevatron, but we predict a substantial rate at the LHC.
HERWIG is a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator, which includes the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering and soft hadron-hadron collisions in one package. It uses the parton-shower approach for initial- and final-state QCD radiation, including colour coherence effects and azimuthal correlations both within and between jets. This article updates the description of HERWIG published in 1992, emphasising the new features incorporated since then. These include, in particular, the matching of first-order matrix elements with parton showers, a more corr…
The QCD analysis of deep inelastic diffractive scattering at HERA is performed assuming the dominance of the "soft" pomeron exchange and simple, physically motivated parametrization of parton distributions in the pomeron. Both the LO and NLO approximations are considered and the theoretical predictions concerning the quantity $R=F_L^D/F_T^D$ for diffractive structure functions are presented.
The role of the QCD vacuum effects in high energy diffractive quark-quark and quark-antiquark scattering is studied with the Instanton Liquid Model. The special attention is given to the problem of formation of the soft Pomeron. We show that in the leading approximation in instanton density the $C-$odd instanton contribution to the diffractive amplitude is suppressed as $1/s$ compared to the $C-$even one.
We revisit diffractive and exclusive W production at hadron colliders in different models for soft colour exchanges. The process pp to p[WX]p, and in particular a W charge asymmetry, has been suggested as a way to discriminate diffractive processes as being due to pomeron exchange in Regge phenomenology or QCD-based colour reconnection models. Our detailed analysis of the latter models at LHC energies shows, however, that they give similar results as pomeron models for very leading protons and central W production, including a vanishing W charge asymmetry. We demonstrate that soft colour excha…
We present a novel Monte-Carlo implementation of dynamic colour screening via multiple exchanges of semi-soft gluons as a basic QCD mechanism to understand diffractive electron-proton scattering at the HERA collider. Based on the kinematics of individual events in the standard QCD description of deep inelastic scattering at the parton level, which at low $x$ is dominantly gluon-initiated, the probability is evaluated for additional exchanges of softer gluons resulting in an overall colour singlet exchange leading to a forward proton and a rapidity gap as the characteristic observables for diff…
Predictions for deep Virtual Compton Scattering are obtained in a two-component dipole model of diffraction. The model automatically includes hard and soft components and implicitly allows for ``hadronic'' contributions via large dipoles. It is also applicable to real Compton Scattering, which provides an important constraint.
We show that the data for diffractive dijet production at the Tevatron p pbar collider are consistent with diffractive deep inelastic e p data collected at HERA. The breakdown of factorization between the two data sets is naturally explained by a strong tendency to populate the rapidity gap in the p pbar diffractive process by secondaries from soft underlying interactions and by bremsstrahlung associated with the presence of the hard dijet subprocess.
Soft colour exchange models give a unified description of both diffractive and non-diffractive events, such that e-p and p-pbar collider data with and without rapidity gaps are well reproduced. We show that these models also describe the new Tevatron data on diffraction based on observed leading antiprotons, which provide new information on how to treat the beam particle remnant in the Monte Carlo model.
We present an estimate of survival probability from an eikonal mini- jet model implemented with a proposal for soft gluon resummation to all orders. We compare it with experimental data for diffractive di-jet production from LHC experiments, CMS and ATLAS, both at LO and NLO order.
An effective field theory describing the QCD diffraction scattering is constructed. The constituent quarks interacting with multiperi- pheral gluons and Goldstone bosons are described by impact- parameter two-dimensional sigma models for the color and the flavor degrees of freedom. The elastic scattering amplitude is then shown to factorize into the hard and the soft pomeron contributions (talk at 5th Blois Workshop on Elastic and Diffractive Scattering Workshop, June 8 - 12, 1993, Providence RI USA)
The QCD analysis of deep inelastic diffractive scattering is performed assuming the dominance of the "soft" pomeron exchange and simple, physically motivated parametrization of parton distributions in a pomeron. Results of the analysis are compared with the recent data obtained by the H1 collaboration at HERA. Both the LO and NLO approximations are considered and the theoretical predictions concerning the quantity $R=F_L^D/F_T^D$ for diffractive structure functions are presented.
In this paper we present a two channel model with the goal of reproducing the soft scattering data available in the ISR-Tevatron energy range, and extend the model results to LHC and Cosmic Rays energies. A characteristic feature of the model is that we represent the sum of all diffractive final states at a vertex, by a single diffractive state. Our two main results are: (i) The approach of the elastic scattering amplitude to the black disc bound is very slow, reaching it at energies far higher than the GZK ankle cutoff. (ii) Our predicted survival probability for Higgs exclusive central diffr…
We calculate diffractive dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering at next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD, including contributions from direct and resolved photons, and compare our predictions to preliminary data from the H1 collaboration at HERA. In contrast to recent experimental claims, evidence for factorization breaking is found only for resolved, and not direct, photon contributions. No evidence is found for large normalization uncertainties in diffractive parton densities. The results confirm theoretical expectations for the (non-)cancellation of soft singularities in diffract…
Models based on soft colour exchanges to rearrange colour strings in the final state provide a general framework for both diffractive and non-diffractive events in ep and hadron-hadron collisions. We study two such models and find that they can reproduce rapidity gap data from both HERA and the Tevatron. We also discuss the influence of parton cascades and multiple interactions on the results.
Diffractive events at hadron colliders are typically characterised by a region of the detector without particles, known as a rapidity gap. In order to observe diffractive events in this way, we consider the pseudorapidity acceptance in the forward region of the ATLAS and CMS detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and discuss the methods to select soft diffractive dissociation for pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. We showed that in the limited detector rapidity acceptance, it is possible to select diffractive dissociated events by requiring a rapidity gap in the event, however, it is not …
We present a new formalism for parton shower simulation of QCD jets, which incorporates the following features: invariance under boosts along jet axes, improved treatment of heavy quark fragmentation, angular-ordered evolution with soft gluon coherence, more accurate soft gluon angular distributions, and better coverage of phase space. It is implemented in the new HERWIG++ event generator.
Diffractive processes in photon-proton interactions at HERA offer the opportunity to improve the understanding of the transition between the soft, non-perturbative regime in hadronic interactions at $Q^2 = 0$ and the perturbative region at high $Q^2$. Recent experimental results from HERA on inclusive diffractive scattering, exclusive vector meson production and the properties of the hadronic final state in diffraction are reviewed. The results are discussed in the context of current theoretical models.
One of the more interesting developments from recent collider experiments is the finding that hadronic total cross sections as well as elastic cross s ections can be described by the exchange of a "soft Pomeron" pole in the near-forward limit. The most impor tant consequence of Pomeron being a pole is the factorization property. However, due to Pomeron intercept being greater than 1, the extrapolated single diffraction dissociation cross section based on a classical triple-Pomeron formula is too large leading to a potential unitarity violation at Tevatron energies. It is our desire here to exa…
We discuss a phenomenological model that describes results on diffractive pp and pbar-p cross sections and event final states up to the Fermilab Tevatron collider energy of 1.96 TeV and use it to make predictions for Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collision energies up to 14 TeV and asymptotically as the pp collision energy goes to infinity. The model is anchored in a saturation effect observed in single diffraction dissociation that explains quantitatively the factorization breaking observed in soft and hard pp and pbar-p diffractive processes and in diffractive photoproduction and low Q-square …
This is the extensive follow-up report of a recent Letter in which the existence of self-organized criticality (SOC) in systems of interacting soft gluons is proposed, and its consequences for inelastic diffractive scattering processes are discussed. It is pointed out, that color-singlet gluon-clusters can be formed in hadrons as a consequence of SOC in systems of interacting soft gluons, and that the properties of such spatiotemporal complexities can be probed experimentally by examing inelastic diffractive scattering. Theoretical arguments and experimental evidences supporting the proposed p…
