J. Renault has recently found a generalization of the caracterization of C*-diagonals obtained by A. Kumjian in the eighties, which in turn is a C*-algebraic version of J. Feldman and C. Moore's well known Theorem on Cartan subalgebras of von Neumann algebras. Here we propose to give a version of Renault's result in which the Cartan subalgebra is not necessarily commutative [sic]. Instead of describing a Cartan pair as a twisted groupoid C*-algebra we use N. Sieben's notion of Fell bundles over inverse semigroups which we believe should be thought of as "twisted etale groupoids with noncommutative unit space". En passant we prove a theorem on uniqueness of conditional expectations.
We characterise Exel's noncommutative Cartan subalgebras in several ways using uniqueness of conditional expectations, relative commutants, or purely outer inverse semigroup actions. We describe in which sense the crossed product decomposition for a noncommutative Cartan subalgebra is unique. We relate the property of being a noncommutative Cartan subalgebra to aperiodic inclusions and effectivity of dual groupoids. In particular, we extend Renault's characterisation of commutative Cartan subalgebras.
We define the localisation of a Hilbert module in analogy to the local multiplier algebra. We use properties of this localisation to enrich non-closed actions on $C^*$-algebras to closed actions on local multiplier algebras, and descend known results on such closed actions down to their unclosed counterparts. We define weak Cartan inclusions and characterise them as crossed products by inverse semigroup actions. We show that in the commutative case we show that weak Cartan subalgebras are maximal abelian, thereby generalising the case studied by Renault.
This paper extends the results of the previous work of the authors on the classification on noncommutative domain algebras up to completely isometric isomorphism. Using Sunada's classification of Reinhardt domains in $C^n$, we show that aspherical noncommutative domain algebras are isomorphic if and only if their defining symbols are equivalent, in the sense that one can be obtained from the other via permutation and scaling of the free variables. We construct Cartan subalgebras in all classifiable stably finite C*-algebras. Together with known constructions of Cartan subalgebras in all UCT Kirchberg algebras, this shows that every classifiable simple C*-algebra has a Cartan subalgebra.
In this paper we study structural and uniqueness questions for Cartan subalgebras of uniform Roe algebras. We characterise when an inclusion $B\subseteq A$ of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras is isomorphic to the canonical inclusion of $\ell^\infty(X)$ inside a uniform Roe algebra $C^*_u(X)$ associated to a metric space of bounded geometry. We obtain uniqueness results for `Roe Cartans' inside uniform Roe algebras up to automorphism when $X$ coarsely embeds into Hilbert space, and up to inner automorphism when $X$ has property A.
We initiate the study of Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras, with a particular focus on existence and uniqueness questions. For homogeneous C*-algebras, these questions can be analysed systematically using the theory of fibre bundles. For group C*-algebras, while we are able to find Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras of many connected Lie groups, there are classes of (discrete) groups, for instance non-abelian free groups, whose reduced group C*-algebras do not have any Cartan subalgebras. We investigate Cartan subalgebras in nontracial amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras $M_1 \ast_B M_2$ over an amenable von Neumann subalgebra $B$. First, we settle the problem of the absence of Cartan subalgebra in arbitrary free product von Neumann algebras. Namely, we show that any nonamenable free product von Neumann algebra $(M_1, φ_1) \ast (M_2, φ_2)$ with respect to faithful normal states has no Cartan subalgebra. Moore's well-known theorem on Cartan subalgebras, a variant of the group measure space construction gives an equivalence of categories between twisted countable standard measured equivalence relations and Cartan pairs, i.e. a von Neumann algebra (on a separable Hilbert space) together with a Cartan subalgebra. Renault proved in 2008 that if $G$ is a topologically principal groupoid, then $C_0(G^{(0)})$ is a Cartan subalgebra in $C^*_r(G, Σ)$ for any twist $Σ$ over $G$. However, there are many groupoids which are not topologically principal, yet their (twisted) $C^*$-algebras admit Cartan subalgebras. We completely classify Cartan subalgebras of dimension drop algebras with coprime parameters. More generally, we classify Cartan subalgebras of arbitrary stabilised dimension drop algebras that are non-degenerate in the sense that the dimensions of their fibres in the endpoints are maximal. Conjugacy classes by an automorphism are parametrised by certain congruence classes of matrices over the natural numbers with prescribed row and column sums. We study Cartan subalgebras in the context of amalgamated free product II$_1$ factors and obtain several uniqueness and non-existence results. We consider some conditions similar to Ozawa's condition (AO), and prove that if a non-injective factor satisfies such a condition and has the W*CBAP, then it has no Cartan subalgebras. As a corollary, we prove that $\rm II_1$ factors of universal orthogonal and unitary discrete quantum groups have no Cartan subalgebras. We also prove that continuous cores of type $\rm III_1$ factors with such a condition are semisolid as a $\rm II_\infty$ factor.
It is a wide open problem to give an intrinsic criterion for a II_1 factor $M$ to admit a Cartan subalgebra $A$. When $A \subset M$ is a Cartan subalgebra, the $A$-bimodule $L^2(M)$ is "simple" in the sense that the left and right action of $A$ generate a maximal abelian subalgebra of $B(L^2(M))$. A II_1 factor $M$ that admits such a subalgebra $A$ is said to be s-thin. We prove a generalized version of Renault's theorem for Cartan subalgebras. We show that the original assumptions of second countability and separability are not needed. This weakens the assumption of topological principality of the underlying groupoid to effectiveness.
We construct a class of II_1 factors M that admit unclassifiably many Cartan subalgebras in the sense that the equivalence relation of being conjugate by an automorphism of M is complete analytic, in particular non Borel. We also construct a II_1 factor that admits uncountably many non isomorphic group measure space decompositions, all involving the same group G. So G is a group that admits uncountably many non stably orbit equivalent actions whose crossed product II_1 factors are all isomorphic.
In this short note we classify the Cartan subalgebras in all von Neumann algebras associated with graph product groups and their free ergodic measure preserving actions on probability spaces.

Let $A$ be a C$^*$-algebra and let $D$ be a Cartan subalgebra of $A$. We study the following question: if $B$ is a C$^*$-algebra such that $D \subseteq B \subseteq A$, is $D$ a Cartan subalgebra of $B$? We give a positive answer in two cases: the case when there is a faithful conditional expectation from $A$ onto $B$, and the case when $A$ is nuclear and $D$ is a C$^*$-diagonal of $A$. In this paper, two sufficient and necessary conditions are given. The first one characterizes when the boundary path groupoid of a topological graph without singular vertices has closed interior of its isotropy group bundle, and the second one characterizes when the path groupoid of a row-finite k-graph without sources has closed interior of its isotropy group bundle. It follows that the associated topological graph algebra and the associated k-graph C*-algebra have Cartan subalgebras due to a result of Brown-Nagy-Reznikoff-Sims-Williams.
For a given inverse semigroup action on a topological space, one can associate an étale groupoid. We prove that there exists a correspondence between the certain subsemigroups and the open wide subgroupoids in case that the action is strongly tight. Combining with the recent result of Brown et. al, we obtain a correspondence between the certain subsemigroups of an inverse semigroup and the Cartan intermediate subalgebras of a groupoid C*-algebra.

We show that a separable, nuclear C*-algebra satisfies the UCT if it has a Cartan subalgebra. Furthermore, we prove that the UCT is closed under crossed products by group actions which respect Cartan subalgebras. We show that outer approximately represenbtable actions of a finite cyclic group on UCT Kirchberg algebras satisfy a certain quasi-freeness type property if the corresponding crossed products satisfy the UCT and absorb a suitable UHF algebra tensorially. In this paper we prove that for a type II_1 factor N with a Cartan maximal abelian subalgebra (masa), the Hochschild cohomology groups H^n(N,N)=0, for all n \geq 1. This generalizes the result of Sinclair and Smith, who proved this for all N having separable predual.
We prove that the normalizer of any diffuse amenable subalgebra of a free group factor $L(\Bbb F_r)$ generates an amenable von Neumann subalgebra. We show that a reflexive subspace of the predual of a von Neumann algebra embeds into a noncommutative Lp space for some p>1. This is a noncommutative version of Rosenthal's result for commutative Lp spaces. Similarly for 1 < q < 2, an infinite dimensional subspace X of a noncommutative Lq space either contains lq or embeds in Lp for some q < p < 2. The novelty in the noncommutative setting is a double sided change of density.
We extend Beurling's invariant subspace theorem, by characterizing subspaces $K$ of the noncommutative $L^p$ spaces which are invariant with respect to Arveson's maximal subdiagonal algebras, sometimes known as noncommutative $H^\infty$. It is significant that a certain subspace, and a certain quotient, of $K$ are $L^p({\mathcal D})$-modules in the recent sense of Junge and Sherman, and therefore have a nice decomposition into cyclic submodules.
