In this paper, we are interested in the combinatorial analysis of the whole genome duplication - random loss model of genome rearrangement initiated in a paper of Chaudhuri, Chen, Mihaescu, and Rao in SODA 2006 and continued by Bouvel and Rossin in 2007. In this model, genomes composed of n genes are modeled by permutations of the set of integers [1..n], that can evolve through duplication-loss steps. It was previously shown that the class of permutations obtained in this model after a given number p of steps is a class of pattern-avoiding permutations of finite basis. The excluded patterns were described as the minimal permutations with d=2^p descents, minimal being intended in the sense of the pattern-involvement relation on permutations. Here, we give a local and simpler characterization of the set B_d of minimal permutations with d descents. We also provide a more detailed analysis - characterization, bijection and enumeration - of two particular subsets of B_d, namely the patterns in B_d of size d+2 and 2d.
The interval poset of a permutation catalogues the intervals that appear in its one-line notation, according to set inclusion. We study this poset, describing its structural, characterizing, and enumerative properties.
A king-non-attacking permutation is a permutation $π\in S_n$ such that $|π(i)-π(i-1)|\neq 1$ for each $i \in \{2,\dots,n\}$. We investigate the structure of the poset of these permutations under the containment relation, and also provide some results on its Möbius function.
For a permutation $ω\in S_{n}$ Denoncourt constructed a poset $M_ω$ which is the set of join-irreducibles of the Lehmer codes of the permutations in $[e, ω]$ in the inversion order on $S_{n}$. In this paper we show that $M_ω$ is a $B_{2}$-free poset if and only if $ω$ is a 3412-3421-avoiding permutation.
We extend the concept of pattern avoidance in permutations on a totally ordered set to pattern avoidance in permutations on partially ordered sets. The number of permutations on $P$ that avoid the pattern $π$ is denoted $Av_P(π)$. We extend a proof of Simion and Schmidt to show that $Av_P(132) \leq Av_P(123)$ for any poset $P$, and we exactly classify the posets for which equality holds.
In Soda'06, Chaudhuri, Chen, Mihaescu and Rao study algorithmic properties of the tandem duplication - random loss model of genome rearrangement, well-known in evolutionary biology. In their model, the cost of one step of duplication-loss of width k is $α^k$ for $α=1$ or $α>=2 $. In this paper, we study a variant of this model, where the cost of one step of width $k$ is 1 if $k <= K$ and $\infty$ if $k > K$, for any value of the parameter $K in N$. We first show that permutations obtained after $p$ steps of width $K$ define classes of pattern-avoiding permutations. We also compute the numbers …
We introduce Lipschitz functions on a finite partially ordered set $P$ and study the associated Lipschitz polytope $L(P)$. The geometry of $L(P)$ can be described in terms of descent-compatible permutations and permutation statistics that generalize descents and big ascents. For ranked posets, Lipschitz polytopes are centrally-symmetric and Gorenstein, which implies symmetry and unimodality of the statistics. Finally, we define $(P,k)$-hypersimplices as generalizations of classical hypersimplices and give combinatorial interpretations of their volumes and $h^*$-vectors.
A structure $\cal S$ is quasi-projective if for every structure $\cal T$, for every homomorphism $f : {\cal S} \rightarrow {\cal T}$ and every epimorphism $j: {\cal S}\rightarrow {\cal T}$ there is an endomorphism $ϕ$ of $\cal S$ such that $ϕ\circ j=f$. In this paper, we characterise the quasi-projective posets and lattices of arbitrary cardinalities, finite permutations, graphs and digraphs of arbitrary cardinalities with loops and without loops, finite hypergraphs, and finite point-line geometries.
The set of all permutations, ordered by pattern containment, forms a poset. This paper presents the first explicit major results on the topology of intervals in this poset. We show that almost all (open) intervals in this poset have a disconnected subinterval and are thus not shellable. Nevertheless, there seem to be large classes of intervals that are shellable and thus have the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres. We prove this to be the case for all intervals of layered permutations that have no disconnected subintervals of rank 3 or more. We also characterize in a simple way those interval…
We present a two term formula for the Möbius function of intervals in the poset of all permutations, ordered by pattern containment. The first term in this formula is the number of so called normal occurrences of one permutation in another. Our definition of normal occurrences is similar to those that have appeared in several variations in the literature on the Möbius function of this and other posets, but simpler than most of them. The second term in the formula is complicated, but we conjecture that it equals zero for a significant proportion of intervals. We present some cases where the sec…
The combined work of Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, Jelínek, Kitaev, Kubitzke and Parviainen has resulted in non-trivial bijections among ascent sequences, (2+2)-free posets, upper-triangular integer matrices, and pattern-avoiding permutations. To probe the finer behavior of these bijections, we study two types of restrictions on ascent sequences. These restrictions are motivated by our results that their images under the bijections are natural and combinatorially significant. In addition, for one restriction, we are able to determine the effect of poset duality on the corresponding ascent s…
We define a family of combinatorial objects, which we call Baxter posets. We prove that Baxter posets are counted by the Baxter numbers by showing that they are the adjacency posets of diagonal rectangulations. Given a diagonal rectangulation, we describe the cover relations in the associated Baxter poset. Given a Baxter poset, we describe a method for obtaining the associated Baxter permutation and the associated twisted Baxter permutation.
A permutation $σ=[σ_1,\dots,σ_n] \in S_n$ is called a {\em cylindrical king permutation} if $ |σ_{i+1}-σ_{i}|>1$ for each $1\leq i \leq n-1$ and $|σ_1-σ_n|>1$. The name comes from the the way one can see these permutations as describing locations of $n$ kings on a chessboard of order $n\times n$ in such a way that (each row and each column contains exactly one king and) no two kings are attacking each other, with the additional condition that a king can move off a certain row and reappear at the beginning of that row. In a recent paper, we dealt with the more general set of 'king permutations'…
We introduce vincular pattern posets, then we consider in particular the quasi-consecutive pattern poset, which is defined by declaring $σ\leq τ$ whenever the permutation $τ$ contains an occurrence of the permutation $σ$ in which all the entries are adjacent in $τ$ except at most the first and the second. We investigate the Möbius function of the quasi-consecutive pattern poset and we completely determine it for those intervals $[σ,τ]$ such that $σ$ occurs precisely once in $τ$.
We introduce a notion of pattern occurrence that generalizes both classical permutation patterns as well as poset containment. Many questions about pattern statistics and avoidance generalize naturally to this setting, and we focus on functional complexity problems -- particularly those that arise by constraining the order dimensions of the pattern and text posets. We show that counting the number of induced, injective occurrences among dimension 2 posets is #P-hard; enumerating the linear extensions that occur in realizers of dimension 2 posets can be done in polynomial time, while for uncons…
Recently it has been shown that all non-trivial closed permutation groups containing the automorphism group of the random poset are generated by two types of permutations: the first type are permutations turning the order upside down, and the second type are permutations induced by so-called rotations. In this paper we introduce rotations for finite posets, which can be seen as the poset counterpart of Seidel-switch for finite graphs. We analyze some of their combinatorial properties, and investigate in particular the question of when two finite posets are rotation-equivalent. We moreover give…
A permutation τcontains another permutation σas a pattern if τhas a subsequence whose elements are in the same order with respect to size as the elements in σ. This defines a partial order on the set of all permutations, and gives a graded poset P. We give a large class of pairs of permutations whose intervals in P have Mobius function 0. Also, we give a solution to the problem when σoccurs precisely once in τ, and σand τsatisfy certain further conditions, in which case the Mobius function is shown to be either -1, 0 or 1. We conjecture that for intervals [σ,τ] consisting of permutations avoid…
We examine the poset $P$ of 132-avoiding $n$-permutations ordered by descents. We show that this poset is the "coarsening" of the well-studied poset $Q$ of noncrossing partitions . In other words, if $x<y$ in $Q$, then $f(y)<f(x)$ in $P$, where $f$ is the canonical bijection from the set of noncrossing partitions onto that of 132-avoiding permutations. This enables us to prove many properties of $P$.
A poset is {\it $(\3+\1)$-free} if it contains no induced subposet isomorphic to the disjoint union of a 3-element chain and a 1-element chain. These posets are of interest because of their connection with interval orders and their appearance in the $(\3+\1)$-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. The dimension 2 posets $P$ are exactly the ones which have an associated permutation $π$ where $i\prec j$ in $P$ if and only if $i<j$ as integers and $i$ comes before $j$ in the one-line notation of $π$. So we say that a permutation $π$ is {\it $(\3+\1)$-free} or {\it $(\3+\1)$-avoiding} if its p…
We introduce the poset of mesh patterns, which generalises the permutation pattern poset. We fully classify the mesh patterns for which the interval [1^\emptyset,m] is non-pure, where 1^\emptyset is the unshaded singleton mesh pattern. We present some results on the Möbius function of the poset, and show that μ(1^\emptyset,m) is almost always zero. Finally, we introduce a class of disconnected and non-shellable intervals by generalising the direct product operation from permutations to mesh patterns.
An occurrence of a consecutive permutation pattern $p$ in a permutation $π$ is a segment of consecutive letters of $π$ whose values appear in the same order of size as the letters in $p$. The set of all permutations forms a poset with respect to such pattern containment. We compute the Möbius function of intervals in this poset, providing what may be called a complete solution to the problem. For most intervals our results give an immediate answer to the question. In the remaining cases, we give a polynomial time algorithm to compute the Möbius function. In particular, we show that the Möbius …
A permutation is called {\it {block-wise simple}} if it contains no interval of the form $p_1\oplus p_2$ or $p_1 \ominus p_2$. We present this new set of permutations and explore some of its combinatorial properties. We present a generating function for this set, as well as a recursive formula for counting block-wise simple permutations. Following Tenner, who founded the notion of interval posets, we characterize and count the interval posets corresponding to block-wise simple permutations. We also present a bijection between these interval posets and certain tiling's of the $n$-gon. Finally, …
The set of all permutations, ordered by pattern containment, is a poset. We give a formula for the Möbius function of intervals $[1,π]$ in this poset, for any permutation $π$ with at most one descent. We compute the Möbius function as a function of the number and positions of pairs of consecutive letters in $π$ that are consecutive in value. As a result of this we show that the Möbius function is unbounded on the poset of all permutations. We show that the Möbius function is zero on any interval $[1,π]$ where $π$ has a triple of consecutive letters whose values are consecutive and monotone. We…
For each positive integer $k$, we consider five well-studied posets defined on the set of Dyck paths of semilength $k$. We prove that uniquely sorted permutations avoiding various patterns are equinumerous with intervals in these posets. While most of our proofs are bijective, some use generating trees and generating functions. We end with several conjectures.
Motivation coming from the study of affine Weyl groups, a structure of ranked poset is defined on the set of circular permutations in $S_n$ (that is, $n$-cycles). It is isomorphic to the poset of so-called admitted vectors, and to an interval in the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_n$ with the weak order. The poset is a semidistributive lattice, and the rank function, whose range is cubic in $n$, is computed by some special formula involving inversions. We prove also some links with Eulerian numbers, triangulations of an $n$-gon, and Young's lattice.
The set of all permutations, ordered by pattern containment, is a poset. We present an order isomorphism from the poset of permutations with a fixed number of descents to a certain poset of words with subword order. We use this bijection to show that intervals of permutations with a fixed number of descents are shellable, and we present a formula for the Möbius function of these intervals. We present an alternative proof for a result on the Möbius function of intervals $[1,π]$ such that $π$ has exactly one descent. We prove that if $π$ has exactly one descent and avoids 456123 and 356124, then…
We introduce two partially ordered sets, $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$, of the same cardinalities as the type-A and type-B noncrossing partition lattices. The ground sets of $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$ are subsets of the symmetric and the hyperoctahedral groups, consisting of permutations which avoid certain patterns. The order relation is given by (strict) containment of the descent sets. In each case, by means of an explicit order-preserving bijection, we show that the poset of restricted permutations is an extension of the refinement order on noncrossing partitions. Several structural properties of these per…
We define a new natural partial order on Motzkin paths that serves as an intermediate step between two previously-studied partial orders. We provide a bijection between valid hook configurations of $312$-avoiding permutations and intervals in these new posets. We also show that valid hook configurations of permutations avoiding $132$ (or equivalently, $231$) are counted by the same numbers that count intervals in the Motzkin-Tamari posets that Fang recently introduced, and we give an asymptotic formula for these numbers. We then proceed to enumerate valid hook configurations of permutations av…
This is a brief survey of some open problems on permutation patterns, with an emphasis on subjects not covered in the recent book by Kitaev, \emph{Patterns in Permutations and words}. I first survey recent developments on the enumeration and asymptotics of the pattern 1324, the last pattern of length 4 whose asymptotic growth is unknown, and related issues such as upper bounds for the number of avoiders of any pattern of length $k$ for any given $k$. Other subjects treated are the Möbius function, topological properties and other algebraic aspects of the poset of permutations, ordered by conta…
We consider the inversion enumerator I_n(q), which counts labeled trees or, equivalently, parking functions. This polynomial has a natural extension to generalized parking functions. Substituting q = -1 into this generalized polynomial produces the number of permutations with a certain descent set. In the classical case, this result implies the formula I_n(-1) = E_n, the number of alternating permutations. We give a combinatorial proof of these formulas based on the involution principle. We also give a geometric interpretation of these identities in terms of volumes of generalized chain polyto…
We study several aspects of the Möbius function, $μ[σ,π]$, on the poset of permutations under the pattern containment order. First, we consider cases where the lower bound of the poset is indecomposable. We show that $μ[σ,π]$ can be computed by considering just the indecomposable permutations contained in the upper bound. We apply this to the case where the upper bound is an increasing oscillation, and give a method for computing the value of the Möbius function that only involves evaluating simple inequalities. We then consider conditions on an interval which guarantee that the value of the M…
Let $π\in \mathfrak{S}_m$ and $σ\in \mathfrak{S}_n$ be permutations. An occurrence of $π$ in $σ$ as a consecutive pattern is a subsequence $σ_i σ_{i+1} \cdots σ_{i+m-1}$ of $σ$ with the same order relations as $π$. We say that patterns $π, τ\in \mathfrak{S}_m$ are strongly c-Wilf equivalent if for all $n$ and $k$, the number of permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with exactly $k$ occurrences of $π$ as a consecutive pattern is the same as for $τ$. In 2018, Dwyer and Elizalde conjectured (generalizing a conjecture of Elizalde from 2012) that if $π, τ\in \mathfrak{S}_m$ are strongly c-Wilf equivalen…
Let $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denote the respective sets of ordinary and bigrassmannian (BG) permutations of order $n$, and let $(\mathfrak{S}_n,\leq)$ denote the Bruhat ordering permutation poset. We study the restricted poset $(\mathfrak{B}_n,\leq)$, first providing a simple criterion for comparability. This criterion is used to show that that the poset is connected, to enumerate the saturated chains between elements, and to enumerate the number of maximal elements below $r$ fixed elements. It also quickly produces formulas for $β(ω)$ ($α(ω)$ respectively), the number of BG permu…
Given a permutation $τ$ defined on a set of combinatorial objects $S$, together with some statistic $f:S\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, we say that the triple $\langle S, τ,f \rangle$ exhibits homomesy if $f$ has the same average along all orbits of $τ$ in $S$. This phenomenon was noticed by Panyushev (2007) and later studied, named and extended by Propp and Roby (2013). After Propp and Roby's paper, homomesy has received a lot of attention and a number of mathematicians are intrigued by it. While seeming ubiquitous, homomesy is often surprisingly non-trivial to prove. Propp and Roby studied homomesy…
The consecutive pattern poset is the infinite partially ordered set of all permutations where $σ\leτ$ if $τ$ has a subsequence of adjacent entries in the same relative order as the entries of $σ$. We study the structure of the intervals in this poset from topological, poset-theoretic, and enumerative perspectives. In particular, we prove that all intervals are rank-unimodal and strongly Sperner, and we characterize disconnected and shellable intervals. We also show that most intervals are not shellable and have Möbius function equal to zero.
The structure of order ideals in the Bruhat order for the symmetric group is elucidated via permutation patterns. A method for determining non-isomorphic principal order ideals is described and applied for small lengths. The permutations with boolean principal order ideals are characterized. These form an order ideal which is a simplicial poset, and its rank generating function is computed. Moreover, the permutations whose principal order ideals have a form related to boolean posets are also completely described. It is determined when the set of permutations avoiding a particular set of patter…
Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the notion of classical patterns studied in the literature in the context of permutations, words, compositions and partitions. In this paper, we give a number of general, and specific enumerative results for POPs in permutations defined by bipartite graphs, substantially extending the list of known results in this direction. In particular, we completely characterize the Wilf-equivalence for patterns defined by the N-shape posets.
We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called {\em Eulerian quasisymmetric functions}, which have the property of specializing to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. Our central result is a formula for the generating function for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specialize…
We introduce the notion of pattern in the context of lattice paths, and investigate it in the specific case of Dyck paths. Similarly to the case of permutations, the pattern-containment relation defines a poset structure on the set of all Dyck paths, which we call the Dyck pattern poset. Given a Dyck path P, we determine a formula for the number of Dyck paths covered by P, as well as for the number of Dyck paths covering P. We then address some typical pattern-avoidance issues, enumerating some classes of pattern-avoiding Dyck paths. Finally, we offer a conjecture concerning the asymptotic beh…
For each composition $\vec{c}$ we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions $Π^{\bullet}_{\vec{c}}$ is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition $\vec{c}$. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module $S^{B}$ where $B$ is a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by a knapsack integer partition and show the analogous results on homotopy type and action on the top homol…
We present the Möbius functions of several posets of annular noncrossing objects, namely a self-dual extension of the annular noncrossing permutations, minimal length annular partitioned permutations, and annular noncrossing partitons.
We introduce diagrams and essential sets for signed permutations, extending the analogous notions for ordinary permutations. In particular, we show that the essential set provides a minimal list of rank conditions defining the Schubert variety or degeneracy locus corresponding to a signed permutation. Our essential set is in bijection with the poset-theoretic version defined by Reiner, Woo, and Yong, and thus gives an explicit, diagrammatic method for computing the latter.
We study a group action on permutations due to Foata and Strehl and use it to prove that the descent generating polynomial of certain sets of permutations has a nonnegative expansion in the basis $\{t^i(1+t)^{n-1-2i}\}_{i=0}^m$, $m=\lfloor (n-1)/2 \rfloor$. This property implies symmetry and unimodality. We prove that the action is invariant under stack-sorting which strengthens recent unimodality results of Bóna. We prove that the generalized permutation patterns $(13-2)$ and $(2-31)$ are invariant under the action and use this to prove unimodality properties for a $q$-analog of the Eulerian …
In certain finite posets, the expected down-degree of their elements is the same whether computed with respect to either the uniform distribution or the distribution weighting an element by the number of maximal chains passing through it. We show that this coincidence of expectations holds for Cartesian products of chains, connected minuscule posets, weak Bruhat orders on finite Coxeter groups, certain lower intervals in Young's lattice, and certain lower intervals in the weak Bruhat order below dominant permutations. Our tools involve formulas for counting nearly reduced factorizations in 0-H…
