We present bijections between four classes of combinatorial objects. Two of them, the class of unlabeled (2+2)-free posets and a certain class of involutions (or chord diagrams), already appeared in the literature, but were apparently not known to be equinumerous. We present a direct bijection between them. The third class is a family of permutations defined in terms of a new type of pattern. An attractive property of these patterns is that, like classical patterns, they are closed under the action of $D_8$, the symmetry group of the square. The fourth class is formed by certain integer sequences, called ascent sequences, which have a simple recursive structure and are shown to encode (2+2)-free posets and permutations. Our bijections preserve numerous statistics.
We determine the generating function of these classes of objects, thus recovering a non-D-finite series obtained by Zagier for the class of chord diagrams. Finally, we characterize the ascent sequences that correspond to permutations avoiding the barred pattern $3{\bar 1}52{\bar 4}$ and use this to enumerate those permutations, thereby settling a conjecture of Pudwell.
The combined work of Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, Jelínek, Kitaev, Kubitzke and Parviainen has resulted in non-trivial bijections among ascent sequences, (2+2)-free posets, upper-triangular integer matrices, and pattern-avoiding permutations. To probe the finer behavior of these bijections, we study two types of restrictions on ascent sequences. These restrictions are motivated by our results that their images under the bijections are natural and combinatorially significant. In addition, for one restriction, we are able to determine the effect of poset duality on the corresponding ascent s…
Chen and collaborators give a recursively defined bijection from 021-avoiding ascent sequences to 021-avoiding (aka 132-avoiding) permutations. Here we give an algorithmic bijection from 021-avoiding ascent sequences to Dyck paths. Our bijection does not appear to be closely related to the Chen bijection but, like the Chen bijection, it preserves several interesting statistics.
The explicite formulas for möbiusien function and some other important elements of the incidence algebra are delivered. For that to do one uses kwaśniewski's construction of his fibonacci cobweb poset in the plane grid coordinate system.
In connection with Vassiliev's knot invariants, Stoimenow (1998) introduced certain matchings, also called regular linearized chord diagrams. Bousquet-Melou et al. (2008) gave a bijection from those matchings to unlabeled (2+2)-free posets; they also showed how to encode the posets as so called ascent sequences. In this paper we present a direct encoding of Stoimenow's matchings as ascent sequences. In doing so we give the rules for recursively constructing and deconstructing such matchings.
Pattern-avoiding ascent sequences have recently been related to set-partition problems and stack-sorting problems. While the generating functions for several length-3 pattern-avoiding ascent sequences are known, those avoiding 000, 100, 110, 120 are not known. We have generated extensive series expansions for these four cases, and analysed them in order to conjecture the asymptotic behaviour. We provide polynomial time algorithms for the 000 and 110 cases, and exponential time algorithms for the 100 and 120 cases. We also describe how the 000 polynomial time algorithm was detected somewhat mec…
Ascent sequences were introduced by Bousquet-Melou et al. in connection with (2+2)-avoiding posets and their pattern avoidance properties were first considered by Duncan and Steingrimsson. In this paper, we consider ascent sequences of length $n$ avoiding two patterns of length 3, and we determine an exact enumeration for 16 different pairs of patterns. Methods include simple recurrences, bijections to other combinatorial objects (including Dyck paths and pattern-avoiding permutations), and generating trees. We also provide an analogue of the Erdos-Szekeres Theorem to prove that any sufficient…
It is natural to ask, given a permutation with no three-term ascending subsequence, at what index the first ascent occurs. We shall show, using both a recursion and a bijection, that the number of 123-avoiding permutations at which the first ascent occurs at positions $k,k+1$ is given by the $k$-fold Catalan convolution $C_{n,k}$. For $1\le k\le n$, $C_{n,k}$ is also seen to enumerate the number of 123-avoiding permutations with $n$ being in the $k$th position. Two interesting discrete probability distributions, related obliquely to the Poisson and geometric random variables, are derived as a …
The notion of (3+1)-avoidance has shown up in many places in enumerative combinatorics. The natural goal of enumeration of all (3+1)-avoiding posets remains open. In this paper, we enumerate graded (3+1)-avoiding posets for both reasonable definitions of the word "graded." Our proof consists of a number of structural theorems followed by some generating function magic. We also provide asymptotics for the growth rate of the number of graded (3 + 1)-avoiding posets.
Ascent sequences have received a lot of attention in recent years in connection with (2 + 2)-free posets and other combinatorial objects. Here, we first show bijectively that analogous repetition sequences are counted by the Bell numbers, and 021-avoiding repetition sequences by the Catalan numbers. Then we adapt a bijection of Chen et al and use it along with the "symbolic" method of Flajolet to find the 4-variable generating function for 021-avoiding ascent sequences by length, number of 0's, number of isolated 0's, and number of runs of 2 or more 0's. We deduce that 021-avoiding ascent sequ…
Ascent sequences were introduced by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev in their study of $(\bf{2+2})$-free posets. An ascent sequence of length $n$ is a nonnegative integer sequence $x=x_{1}x_{2}... x_{n}$ such that $x_{1}=0$ and $x_{i}\leq \asc(x_{1}x_{2}...x_{i-1})+1$ for all $1<i\leq n$, where $\asc(x_{1}x_{2}...x_{i-1})$ is the number of ascents in the sequence $x_{1}x_{2}... x_{i-1}$. We let $\cA_n$ stand for the set of such sequences and use $\cA_n(p)$ for the subset of sequences avoiding a pattern $p$. Similarly, we let $S_{n}(τ)$ be the set of $τ$-avoiding permutations in the s…
In this paper, we consider two sets of pattern-avoiding ascent sequences: those avoiding both 201 and 210 and those avoiding 0021. In each case we show that the number of such ascent sequences is given by the binomial convolution of the Catalan numbers. The result for $\{201, 210\}$-avoiders completes a family of results given by Baxter and the current author in a previous paper. The result for 0021-avoiders, together with previous work of Duncan, Steingrímsson, Mansour, and Shattuck, completes the Wilf classification of single patterns of length 4 for ascent sequences.
We explore the enumeration of some natural classes of graded posets, including all graded posets, (2+2)- and (3+1)-avoiding graded posets, (2+2)-avoiding graded posets, and (3+1)-avoiding graded posets. We obtain enumerative and structural theorems for all of them. Along the way, we discuss a situation when we can switch between enumeration of labeled and unlabeled objects with ease, generalize a result of Postnikov and Stanley from the theory of hyperplane arrangements, answer a question posed by Stanley, and see an old result of Klarner in a new light.
Inspired by Yakoubov's 2015 investigation of pattern avoiding linear extensions of the posets called combs, we study pattern avoiding linear extensions of rectangular posets. These linear extensions are closely related to standard tableaux. For positive integers $s$ and $t$ we consider two natural rectangular partial orders on $\{1,2,\ldots,s t\}$, which we call the NE rectangular order and the EN rectangular order. First we enumerate linear extensions of both rectangular orders avoiding most sets of patterns of length three. Then we use both a generating tree and a bijection to show that the …
Recently, Yan and the first named author investigated systematically the enumeration of inversion or ascent sequences avoiding vincular patterns of length $3$, where two of the three letters are required to be adjacent. They established many connections with familiar combinatorial families and proposed several interesting conjectures. The objective of this paper is to address two of their conjectures concerning the enumeration of $\underline{12}0$-avoiding inversion or ascent sequences.
In this paper we introduce {\em weak ascent sequences}, a class of number sequences that properly contains ascent sequences. We show how these sequences uniquely encode each of the following objects: permutations avoiding a particular length-4 bivincular pattern; upper-triangular binary matrices that satisfy a column-adjacency rule; factorial posets that are weakly (3+1)-free. We also show how weak ascent sequences are related to a class of pattern avoiding inversion sequences that has been a topic of recent research by Auli and Elizalde. Finally, we consider the problem of enumerating these n…
Ascent sequences are sequences of nonnegative integers with restrictions on the size of each letter, depending on the number of ascents preceding it in the sequence. Ascent sequences have recently been related to (2+2)-free posets and various other combinatorial structures. We study pattern avoidance in ascent sequences, giving several results for patterns of lengths up to 4, for Wilf equivalence and for growth rates. We establish bijective connections between pattern avoiding ascent sequences and various other combinatorial objects, in particular with set partitions. We also make a number of …
An ascent sequence is one consisting of non-negative integers in which the size of each letter is restricted by the number of ascents preceding it in the sequence. Ascent sequences have recently been shown to be related to (2+2)-free posets and a variety of other combinatorial structures. In this paper, we prove in the affirmative some recent conjectures concerning pattern avoidance for ascent sequences. Given a pattern $τ$, let $\mathcal{S}_τ(n)$ denote the set of ascent sequences of length $n$ avoiding $τ$. Here, we show that the joint distribution of the statistic pair $(\asc,\zero)$ on $\m…
We introduce Lipschitz functions on a finite partially ordered set $P$ and study the associated Lipschitz polytope $L(P)$. The geometry of $L(P)$ can be described in terms of descent-compatible permutations and permutation statistics that generalize descents and big ascents. For ranked posets, Lipschitz polytopes are centrally-symmetric and Gorenstein, which implies symmetry and unimodality of the statistics. Finally, we define $(P,k)$-hypersimplices as generalizations of classical hypersimplices and give combinatorial interpretations of their volumes and $h^*$-vectors.
We examine the poset $P$ of 132-avoiding $n$-permutations ordered by descents. We show that this poset is the "coarsening" of the well-studied poset $Q$ of noncrossing partitions . In other words, if $x<y$ in $Q$, then $f(y)<f(x)$ in $P$, where $f$ is the canonical bijection from the set of noncrossing partitions onto that of 132-avoiding permutations. This enables us to prove many properties of $P$.
In this paper, we construct a listing for the vertices of the augmentation graph of given size, and as a consequence, we obtain a Hamiltonian cycle for the square of the augmentation graph of given size. As applications, we have a Gray code for the $132$-$312$ avoiding permutations of given length such that two successive permutations differ by at most $2$ adjacent transpositions. Also we obtain Gray codes of strong distance $2$ for the $001$ avoiding ascent sequences and the $010$ avoiding ascent sequences of given length.
A sequence x=x_1 x_2...x_n $ is said to be an ascent sequence of length $n$ if it satisfies x_1=0 and $0\leq x_i\leq asc(x_1x_2...x_{i-1})+1$ for all $2\leq i\leq n$, where $asc(x_1x_2... x_{i-1})$ is the number of ascents in the sequence $x_1x_2... x_{i-1}$. Recently, Duncan and Steingr\'ımsson proposed the conjecture that 210-avoiding ascent sequences of length $n$ are equinumerous with 3-nonnesting set partitions of $\{1,2,..., n\}$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture by showing that 210-avoiding ascent sequences of length $n$ are in bijection with 3-nonnesting set partitions of $\{1…
We consider the distribution of ascents, descents, peaks, valleys, double ascents, and double descents over permutations avoiding a set of patterns. Many of these statistics have already been studied over sets of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length 3. However, the distribution of peaks over 321-avoiding permutations is new and we relate it statistics on Dyck paths. We also obtain new interpretations of a number of well-known combinatorial sequences by studying these statistics over permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3.
A Fishburn permutation is a permutation which avoids the bivincular pattern $(231, \{1\}, \{1\})$, while an ascent sequence is a sequence of nonnegative integers in which each entry is less than or equal to one more than the number of ascents to its left. Fishburn permutations and ascent sequences are linked by a bijection $g$ of Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, and Kitaev. We write $F_n(σ_1,\ldots,σ_k)$ to denote the set of Fishburn permutations of length $n$ which avoid each of $σ_1,\ldots,σ_k$ and we write $A_n(α_1,\ldots,α_k)$ to denote the set of ascent sequences which avoid each of $α_1,…
A poset is {\it $(\3+\1)$-free} if it contains no induced subposet isomorphic to the disjoint union of a 3-element chain and a 1-element chain. These posets are of interest because of their connection with interval orders and their appearance in the $(\3+\1)$-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. The dimension 2 posets $P$ are exactly the ones which have an associated permutation $π$ where $i\prec j$ in $P$ if and only if $i<j$ as integers and $i$ comes before $j$ in the one-line notation of $π$. So we say that a permutation $π$ is {\it $(\3+\1)$-free} or {\it $(\3+\1)$-avoiding} if its p…
Let $F(n,k)$ ($f(n,k)$) denote the maximum possible size of the smallest color class in a (partial) $k$-coloring of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ that does not admit a rainbow antichain of size $k$. The value of $F(n,3)$ and $f(n,2)$ has been recently determined exactly. We prove that for any fixed $k$ if $n$ is large enough, then $F(n,k),f(n,k)=2^{(1/2+o(1))n}$ holds. We also introduce the general functions for any poset $P$ and integer $c\ge |P|$: let $F(n,c,P)$ ($f(n,c,P)$) denote the the maximum possible size of the smallest color class in a (partial) $c$-coloring of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ …
An unlabeled poset is said to be (2+2)-free if it does not contain an induced subposet that is isomorphic to 2+2, the union of two disjoint 2-element chains. Let $p_n$ denote the number of (2+2)-free posets of size $n$. In a recent paper, Bousquet-Mélou et al.\cite{BCDK} found, using so called ascent sequences, the generating function for the number of (2+2)-free posets of size $n$: $P(t)=\sum_{n \geq 0} p_n t^n = \sum_{n\geq 0} \prod_{i=1}^{n} (1-(1-t)^i)$. We extend this result in two ways. First, we find the generating function for (2+2)-free posets when four statistics are taken into accou…
Ascent sequences are those consisting of non-negative integers in which the size of each letter is restricted by the number of ascents preceding it and have been shown to be equinumerous with the (2+2)-free posets of the same size. Furthermore, connections to a variety of other combinatorial structures, including set partitions, permutations, and certain integer matrices, have been made. In this paper, we identify all members of the (4,4)-Wilf equivalence class for ascent sequences corresponding to the Catalan number C_n=\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}. This extends recent work concerning avoidance…

We introduce the notion of pattern in the context of lattice paths, and investigate it in the specific case of Dyck paths. Similarly to the case of permutations, the pattern-containment relation defines a poset structure on the set of all Dyck paths, which we call the Dyck pattern poset. Given a Dyck path P, we determine a formula for the number of Dyck paths covered by P, as well as for the number of Dyck paths covering P. We then address some typical pattern-avoidance issues, enumerating some classes of pattern-avoiding Dyck paths. Finally, we offer a conjecture concerning the asymptotic beh…
A matching of the set $[2n]=\{ 1,2,\ldots ,2n\}$ is a partition of $[2n]$ into blocks with two elements, i.e. a graph on $[2n]$ such that every vertex has degree one. Given two matchings $σ$ and $τ$ , we say that $σ$ is a pattern of $τ$ when $σ$ can be obtained from $τ$ by deleting some of its edges and consistently relabelling the remaining vertices. This is a partial order relation turning the set of all matchings into a poset, which will be called the matching pattern poset. In this paper, we continue the study of classes of pattern avoiding matchings, initiated by Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley a…
As shown by Bousquet-Mélou--Claesson--Dukes--Kitaev (2010), ascent sequences can be used to encode $({\bf2+2})$-free posets. It is known that ascent sequences are enumerated by the Fishburn numbers, which appear as the coefficients of the formal power series $$\sum_{m=1}^{\infty}\prod_{i=1}^m (1-(1-t)^i).$$ In this paper, we present a novel way to recursively decompose ascent sequences, which leads to: (i) a calculation of the Euler--Stirling distribution on ascent sequences, including the numbers of ascents ($\asc$), repeated entries $(\rep)$, zeros ($\zero$) and maximal entries ($\max$). In …
We define a new natural partial order on Motzkin paths that serves as an intermediate step between two previously-studied partial orders. We provide a bijection between valid hook configurations of $312$-avoiding permutations and intervals in these new posets. We also show that valid hook configurations of permutations avoiding $132$ (or equivalently, $231$) are counted by the same numbers that count intervals in the Motzkin-Tamari posets that Fang recently introduced, and we give an asymptotic formula for these numbers. We then proceed to enumerate valid hook configurations of permutations av…
We show that there are $n!$ matchings on $2n$ points without, so called, left (neighbor) nestings. We also define a set of naturally labeled $(2+2)$-free posets, and show that there are $n!$ such posets on $n$ elements. Our work was inspired by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A. 117 (2010) 884--909]. They gave bijections between four classes of combinatorial objects: matchings with no neighbor nestings (due to Stoimenow), unlabeled $(2+2)$-free posets, permutations avoiding a specific pattern, and so called ascent sequences. We believe that certain statistics…
A sequence $(a_1, \ldots, a_n)$ of nonnegative integers is an {\em ascent sequence} if $a_0 =0$ and for all $i \geq 2$, $a_i$ is at most 1 plus the number of ascents in $(a_1, \ldots, a_{i-1})$. Ascent sequences were introduced by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, and Kitaev, who showed that these sequences of length $n$ are in 1-to-1 correspondence with \tpt-free posets of size $n$, which, in turn, are in 1-to-1 correspondence with interval orders of size $n$. Ascent sequences are also in bijection with several other classes of combinatorial objects including the set of upper triangular matric…
Let $n$ be a positive integer, $q$ a power of a prime, and $\mathcal{L}_n(q)$ the poset of subspaces of an $n$-dimensional vector space over a field with $q$ elements. This poset is a normalized matching poset and the set of subspaces of dimension $\left\lfloor n/2 \right\rfloor$ or those of dimension $\left\lceil n/2 \right\rceil$ are the only maximum-sized anti-chains in this poset. Strengthening this well-known and celebrated result, we show that, except in the case of $\mathcal{L}_3(2)$, these same collections of subspaces are the only maximum-sized families in $\mathcal{L}_n(q)$ that avoi…
It is well known since the seminal work by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev (2010) that certain refinements of the ascent sequences with respect to several natural statistics are in bijection with corresponding refinements of $({\bf2+2})$-free posets and permutations that avoid a bivincular pattern. Different multiply-refined enumerations of ascent sequences and other bijectively equivalent structures have subsequently been extensively studied by various authors. In this paper, our main contributions are 1. a bijective proof of a bi-symmetric septuple equidistribution of statistics o…
For a permutation $ω\in S_{n}$ Denoncourt constructed a poset $M_ω$ which is the set of join-irreducibles of the Lehmer codes of the permutations in $[e, ω]$ in the inversion order on $S_{n}$. In this paper we show that $M_ω$ is a $B_{2}$-free poset if and only if $ω$ is a 3412-3421-avoiding permutation.
We consider profunctors $f : P \promap Q$ between posets and introduce their {\em graph} and {\em ascent}. The profunctors $\Pro(P,Q)$ form themselves a poset, and we consider a partition $\cI \sqcup \cF$ of this into a down-set $\cI$ and up-set $\cF$, called a {\it cut}. To elements of $\cF$ we associate their graphs, and to elements of $\cI$ we associate their ascents. Our basic result is that this, suitable refined, preserves being a cut: We get a cut in the Boolean lattice of subsets of the underlying set of $Q \times P$. Cuts in finite Booleans lattices correspond precisely to finite simp…
In 2010, Bousquet-Mélou et al. defined sequences of nonnegative integers called ascent sequences and showed that the ascent sequences of length $n$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the interval orders, i.e., the posets not containing the poset $\mathbf{2}+\mathbf{2}$. Through the use of generating functions, this provided an answer to the longstanding open question of enumerating the (unlabeled) interval orders. A semiorder is an interval order having a representation in which all intervals have the same length. In terms of forbidden subposets, the semiorders exclude $\mathbf{2}+\mathbf{2…
We investigate pattern avoidance in alternating permutations and generalizations thereof. First, we study pattern avoidance in an alternating analogue of Young diagrams. In particular, we extend Babson-West's notion of shape-Wilf equivalence to apply to alternating permutations and so generalize results of Backelin-West-Xin and Ouchterlony to alternating permutations. Second, we study pattern avoidance in the more general context of permutations with restricted ascents and descents. We consider a question of Lewis regarding permutations that are the reading words of thickened staircase Young t…
Valid hook configurations are combinatorial objects used to understand West's stack-sorting map. We extend existing bijections corresponding valid hook configurations to intervals in partial orders on Motzkin paths. To enumerate valid hook configurations on $312$-avoiding permutations, we build off of an existing bijection into a Motzkin poset and construct a bijection to certain well-studied closed lattice walks in the first quadrant. We use existing results about these lattice paths to show that valid hook configurations on $312$-avoiding permutations are not counted by a $D$-finite generati…
We obtain the generating functions for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and left nestings. We show that there is a bijection between partial matchings avoiding three neighbor patterns (neighbor alignments, left nestings and right nestings) and set partitions avoiding right nestings via an intermediate structure of integer compositions. Such integer compositions are known to be in one-to-one correspondence with self-modified ascent sequences or $3\bar{1}52\bar{4}$-avoiding permutations, as shown by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Du…
A poset is said to be (2+2)-free if it does not contain an induced subposet that is isomorphic to 2+2, the union of two disjoint 2-element chains. Two elements in a poset are indistinguishable if they have the same strict up-set and the same strict down-set. Being indistinguishable defines an equivalence relation on the elements of the poset. We introduce the statistic maxindist, the maximum size of a set of indistinguishable elements. We show that, under a bijection of Bousquet-Melou et al., indistinguishable elements correspond to letters that belong to the same run in the so-called ascent s…
Set partitions avoiding $k$-crossing and $k$-nesting have been extensively studied from the aspects of both combinatorics and mathematical biology. By using the generating tree technique, the obstinate kernel method and Zeilberger's algorithm, Lin confirmed a conjecture due independently to the author and Martinez-Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length 3 and enhanced 3-nonnesting partitions have the same cardinality. In this paper, we provide a bijective proof of this conjecture. Our bijection also enables us to provide a new bijective proof of …
Walks in a directed graph can be given a partially ordered structure that extends to possibly unconnected objects, called hikes. Studying the incidence algebra on this poset reveals unsuspected relations between walks and self-avoiding hikes. These relations are derived by considering truncated versions of the characteristic polynomial of the weighted adjacency matrix, resulting in a collection of matrices whose entries enumerate the self-avoiding hikes of length $\ell$ from one vertex to another.
This paper investigates pattern avoidance in linear extensions of a certain class of partially ordered set. Since the question of enumerating pattern avoiding linear extensions of posets in general is a very hard one, we focus instead on certain partially ordered sets called combs. Combs consist of a fully ordered spine, and several fully ordered teeth, where each tooth coincides with a corresponding element of the spine. We consider two natural assignments of integers to elements of the combs; we refer to the resulting integer posets as type-alpha combs and type-beta combs. In this paper, we …
