We show that each of the topological 4-manifolds $CP^2#k\bar{CP^2}, for $k = 6, 7$ admits a smooth structure which has an Einstein metric of scalar curvature $s > 0$, a smooth structure which has an Einstein metric with $s < 0$ and infinitely many non-diffeomorphic smooth structures which do not admit Einstein metrics. We show that there are infinitely many manifolds homeomorphic non-diffeomorphic to $CP^2#5\bar{CP^2}$ which do not admit an Einstein metric. We also exhibit new higher dimensional examples of manifolds carrying Einstein metrics of both positive and negative scalar curvature. The main ingredients are recent constructions of exotic symplectic or complex manifolds with small topological numbers.
In this note, we prove that there is a canonical continuous Hermitian metric on the CM line bundle over the proper moduli space $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ of smoothable Kahler-Einstein Fano varieties. The curvature of this metric is the Weil-Petersson current, which exists as a positive (1,1)-current on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ and extends the canonical Weil-Petersson current on the moduli space parametrizing smooth Kahler-Einstein Fano manifolds $\mathcal{M}$. As a consequence, we show that the CM line bundle is nef and big on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ and its restriction on $\mathcal{M}$ is ample.
We survey recent results on the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on certain smoothable Fano varieties, focusing on the importance of such metrics in the construction of compact algebraic moduli spaces of K-polystable Fano varieties. Moreover, we give some applications and we discuss some natural problems which deserve future investigations.
In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the orbit space of the closure of the subscheme parametrizing smooth Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds inside an appropriate Hilbert scheme. In particular, we prove that being K-semistable is a Zariski open condition and establish the uniqueness for the Gromov-Hausdorff limit for a punctured flat family of Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds. Based on these, we construct a proper scheme parameterizing the S-equivalent classes of $\QQ$-Gorenstein smoothable, K-semistable Fano varieties, and verify various necessary properties to guarantee that it is a good …
Symmetric varieties are normal equivarient open embeddings of symmetric homogeneous spaces, and they are interesting examples of spherical varieties. We prove that all smooth Fano symmetric varieties with Picard number one admit Kähler-Einstein metrics by using a combinatorial criterion for K-stability of Fano spherical varieties obtained by Delcroix. For this purpose, we present their algebraic moment polytopes and compute the barycenter of each moment polytope with respect to the Duistermaat-Heckman measure.
We prove the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics on Q-Gorenstein smoothable, K-polystable Q-Fano varieties, and we show how these metrics behave, in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense, under Q-Gorenstein smoothings.
In this paper, first we consider the existence and non-existence of Einstein metrics on the topological 4-manifolds $3\mathbb{CP}^2 # k \bar{\mathbb{CP}}^2$ (for $k \in {11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18}$) by using the idea of Răsdeaconu and Şuvaina (2009) and the constructions in Park, Park, and Shin (arXiv:0906.5195v2) and in Park, Park, and Shin (2009). Then, we study the existence or non-existence of non-singular solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the exotic smooth structures of these topological manifolds by employing the obstruction developed in Ishida (2008).
We study the problem of existence of Kähler--Einstein metrics on smooth Fano threefolds of Picard rank one and anticanonical degree $22$ that admit a faithful action of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{C}^\ast$. We prove that, except possibly two explicitly described cases, all such smooth Fano threefolds are Kähler--Einstein.
We consider Fano manifolds M that admit a collection of finite automorphism groups G_1, ..., G_k, such that the quotients M/G_i are smooth Fano manifolds possessing a Kaehler-Einstein metric. Under some numerical and smoothness assumptions on the ramification divisors, we prove that M admits a Kaehler-Einstein metric too.
We prove that for every natural number k there are simply connected topological four-manifolds which have at leat k distinct smooth structures supporting Einstein metrics, and also have infinitely many distinct smooth structures not supporting Einstein metrics. Moreover, all these smooth structures become diffeomorphic after connected sum with only one copy of the complex projective plane. We prove that manifolds with these properties cover a large geographical area.
Given a smooth complex projective variety X and a smooth divisor D on X, we prove the existence of Hermitian-Einstein connections, with respect to a Poincaré-type metric on X - D, on polystable parabolic principal Higgs bundles with parabolic structure over D, satisfying certain conditions on its restriction to D.
In this paper, I give a new construction of a Kähler-Einstein metrics on a smooth projective variety with ample canonical bundle. This result can be generalized to the construction of a singular Kähler-Einstein metric on a smooth projective variety of general type which gives an AZD of the canonical bundle. Also the variation of Bergman kernels and Kähler-Einstein volume form have been considered.
Smooth Kahler-Einstein metrics have been studied for the past 80 years. More recently, singular Kahler-Einstein metrics have emerged as objects of intrinsic interest, both in differential and algebraic geometry, as well as a powerful tool in better understanding their smooth counterparts. This article is mostly a survey of some of these developments.
We introduce the tractor formalism from conformal geometry to the study of smooth metric measure spaces. In particular, this gives rise to a correspondence between quasi-Einstein metrics and parallel sections of certain tractor bundles. We use this formulation to give a sharp upper bound on the dimension of the vector space of quasi-Einstein metrics, providing a different perspective on some recent results of He, Petersen and Wylie.
We show that if a Fano manifold $M$ is K-stable with respect to special degenerations equivariant under a compact group of automorphisms, then $M$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric. This is a strengthening of the solution of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for Fano manifolds by Chen-Donaldson-Sun, and can be used to obtain new examples of Kähler-Einstein manifolds. We also give analogous results for twisted Kähler-Einstein metrics and Kahler-Ricci solitons.
Smooth metric measure spaces have been studied from the two different perspectives of Bakry-Émery and Chang-Gursky-Yang, both of which are closely related to work of Perelman on the Ricci flow. These perspectives include a generalization of the Ricci curvature and the associated quasi-Einstein metrics, which include Einstein metrics, conformally Einstein metrics, gradient Ricci solitons, and static metrics. In this article, we describe a natural perspective on smooth metric measure spaces from the point of view of conformal geometry and show how it unites these earlier perspectives within a un…
We prove that there are infinitely many pairs of homeomorphic non-diffeomorphic smooth 4-manifolds, such that in each pair one manifold admits an Einstein metric and the other does not. We also show that there are closed 4-manifolds with two smooth structures which admit Einstein metrics with opposite signs of the scalar curvature.
Let $(M^n,g)$, $n \ge 4$, be a compact simply-connected Riemannian manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature. Given $0<l\le L$, we prove that there exists $\eps = \eps (l,L,n)$ satisfying the following: If the scalar curvature $s$ of $g$ satisfies $$ l \le s \le L $$ and the Einstein tensor satisfies $$ | Ric - \frac {s}{n}g | \le \eps$$ then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a symmetric space of compact type. This is a smooth analogue of the result of S. Brendle that a compact Einstein manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature is isometric to a locally symmetric space.
The existence of \emph{weak conical Kähler-Einstein} metrics along smooth hypersurfaces with angle between $0$ and $2π$ is obtained by studying a smooth continuity method and a \emph{local Moser's iteration} technique. In the case of negative and zero Ricci curvature, the $C^0$ estimate is unobstructed; while in the case of positive Ricci curvature, the $C^0$ estimate obstructed by the properness of the \emph{twisted K-Energy}. As soon as the $C^0$ estimate is achieved, the local Moser iteration could improve the \emph{rough bound} on the approximations to a \emph{uniform $C^2$ bound}, thus pr…
On a smooth metric measure spacetime $(M,g,e^{-f} dvol_g)$, we define a weighted Einstein tensor. It is given in terms of the Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor as a tensor which is symmetric, divergence-free, concomitant of the metric and the density function. We consider the associated vacuum weighted Einstein field equations and show that isotropic solutions have nilpotent Ricci operator. Moreover, the underlying manifold is a Brinkmann wave if it is $2$-step nilpotent and a Kundt spacetime if it is $3$-step nilpotent. More specific results are obtained in dimension $3$, where all isotropic solutions…
We show that for any Ricci-flat manifold with Euclidean volume growth the tangent cone at infinity is unique if one tangent cone has a smooth cross-section. Similarly, for any noncollapsing limit of Einstein manifolds with uniformly bounded Einstein constants, we show that local tangent cones are unique if one tangent cone has a smooth cross-section.
In this note, we prove that any non-collapsing and compact Gromov-Hausdorff limit of Kahler-Einstein manifolds is either smooth or is orbifold outside a subvariety of complex codimension at least 3.
In this paper we study fundamental properties of geodesic mappings with respect to the smoothness class of metrics. We show that geodesic mappings preserve the smoothness class of metrics. We study geodesic mappings of Einstein spaces.
In this paper we consider the problem of prescribing the $\bar{Q}'$-curvature on three dimensional Pseudo-Einstein CR manifolds. We study the gradient flow generated by the related functional and we will prove its convergence to a limit function under suitable assumptions.
We shall construct a moduli space of pairs of Kähler-Einstein structures and special lagrangians and obtain smoothness of the moduli space of these pairs. Further we show that the moduli space of these pairs is locally embedded in a certain relative cohomology group.
Which smooth compact 4-manifolds admit an Einstein metric with non-negative Einstein constant? A complete answer is provided in the special case of 4-manifolds that also happen to admit either a complex structure or a symplectic structure.
In this paper we prove that the Kähler-Einstein metrics for a degeneration family of Kähler manifolds with ample canonical bundles Gromov-Hausdorff converge to the complete Kähler-Einstein metric on the smooth part of the central fiber when the central fiber has only normal crossing singularities inside smooth total space. We also prove the incompleteness of the Weil-Peterson metric in this case.
We analyse the issue of uniqueness of solutions of the static vacuum Einstein equations with prescribed geometric or Bartnik boundary data. Large classes of examples are constructed where uniqueness fails. We then discuss the implications of this behavior for the Bartnik quasi-local mass. A variational characterization of Bartnik boundary data is also given.
In this paper we prove that generic small partial smoothings of Kahler-Einstein (KE) Del Pezzo orbifolds with only nodal singularities, and with no non-zero holomorphic vector fields, admit orbifold KE metrics which are close in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to the original KE metric.
We show that the minimal volume entropy of closed manifolds remains unaffected when nonessential manifolds are added in a connected sum. We combine this result with the stable cohomotopy invariant of Bauer-Furuta in order to present an infinite family of four-manifolds with the following properties: 1) They have positive minimal volume entropy. 2) They satisfy a strict version of the Gromov-Hitchin-Thorpe inequality, with a minimal volume entropy term. 3) They nevertheless admit infinitely many distinct smooth structures for which no compatible Einstein metric exists.
We show that there exist smooth, simply connected, four-dimensional spin manifolds which do not admit Einstein metrics, but nonetheless satisfy the strict Hitchin-Thorpe inequality. Our construction makes use of the Bauer/Furuta cohomotopy refinement of the Seiberg-Witten invariant, in conjunction with curvature estimates previously proved by the second author. These methods also easily allow one to construct examples of topological 4-manifolds which admit an Einstein metric for one smooth structure, but which have infinitely many other smooth structures for which no Einstein metric can exist.
Let X be a smooth complex projective curve and S a finite subset of X. We show that an orthogonal or symplectic parabolic Higgs bundle on X with parabolic structure over S admits a Hermitian-Einstein connection if and only if it is polystable.
In this paper, we prove an existence result for Kähler-Einstein metrics on $\mathbb Q$-Fano compactifications of Lie groups. As an application, we classify $\mathbb Q$-Fano compactifications of $SO_4(\mathbb C)$ which admit a Kähler-Einstein metric with the same volume as that of a smooth Fano compactification of $SO_4(\mathbb C)$.
The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of smooth closed surfaces with everywhere positive Gauss curvature. We use a reformulation that replaces deformation of an embedding by deformation of the metric inside the body bounded by the surface. The proof is obtained by studying derivatives of the Hilbert-Einstein functional with boundary term. This approach is in a sense dual to proving the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity, that is rigidity with respect to the Gauss curvature parametrized by the Gauss map, by studying derivatives of the volume bounded by the surface. We…
For a conformally compact Poincaré-Einstein manifold $(X,g_+)$, we consider two types of compactifications for it. One is $\bar{g}=ρ^2g_+$, where $ρ$ is a fixed smooth defining function; the other is the adapted (including Fefferman-Graham) compactification $\bar{g}_s=ρ^2_sg_+$ with a continuous parameter $s>\frac{n}{2}$. In this paper, we mainly prove that for a set of conformally compact Poincaré-Einstein manifolds $\{(X, g_{+}^{(i)})\}$ with conformal infinity of positive Yamabe type, $\{\bar{g}^{(i)}\}$ is compact in $C^{k,α}(\overline{X})$ topology if and only if $\{\bar{g}_s^{(i)}\}$ is …
On a 4-dimensional compact symplectic manifold, we consider a smooth family of compatible almost-complex structures such that at time zero the induced metric is Hermite-Einstein almost-Kähler metric with zero or negative Hermitian scalar curvature. We prove, under certain hypothesis, the existence of a smooth family of compatible almost-complex structures, diffeomorphic at each time to the initial family, and inducing constant Hermitian scalar curvature metrics.
Let $(X, D)$ be a log smooth log canonical pair such that $K_X+D$ is ample. Extending a theorem of Guenancia and building on his techniques, we show that negatively curved Kähler-Einstein crossing edge metrics converge to Kähler-Einstein mixed cusp and edge metrics smoothly away from the divisor when some of the cone angles converge to $0$. We further show that near the divisor such normalized Kähler-Einstein crossing edge metrics converge to a mixed cylinder and edge metric in the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff sense when some of the cone angles converge to $0$ at (possibly) different speeds.
We prove that given any smooth metric $γ$ and smooth positive function $H$ on $S^{2}$, there is a constant $λ> 0$, depending on $(γ, H)$, and an asymptotically flat solution $(M, g, u)$ of the static vacuum Einstein equations on $M = {\mathbb R}^{3} \setminus B^{3}$, such that the induced metric and mean curvature of $(M, g, u)$ at $\partial M$ are given by $(γ, λH)$. This gives a partial resolution of a conjecture of Bartnik.
In this paper, we introduce the "coupled Ricci iteration", a dynamical system related to the Ricci operator and twisted Kähler-Einstein metrics as an approach to the study of coupled Kähler-Einstein (CKE) metrics. For negative first Chern class, we prove the smooth convergence of the iteration. For positive first Chern class, we also provide a notion of coercivity of the Ding functional, and show its equivalence to existence of CKE metrics. As an application, we prove the smooth convergence of the iteration on CKE Fano manifolds assuming that the automorphism group is discrete.
On any given compact (n+1)-manifold M with non-empty boundary, it is proved that the moduli space of Einstein metrics on M is a smooth, infinite dimensional Banach manifold under a mild condition on the fundamental group. Thus, the Einstein moduli space is unobstructed. The Dirichlet and Neumann boundary maps to data on the boundary are smooth, but not Fredholm. Instead, one has natural mixed boundary-value problems which give Fredholm boundary maps. These results also hold for manifolds with compact boundary which have a finite number of locally asymptotically flat ends, as well as for the Ei…
We show that any toric Kähler cone with smooth compact cross-section admits a family of Calabi-Yau cone metrics with conical singularities along its toric divisors. The family is parametrized by the Reeb cone and the angles are given explicitly in terms of the Reeb vector field. The result is optimal, in the sense that any toric Calabi-Yau cone metric with conical singularities along the toric divisor (and smooth elsewhere) belongs to this family. We also provide examples and interpret our results in terms of Sasaki-Einstein metrics.
This article considers the existence and regularity of Kahler-Einstein metrics on a compact Kahler manifold $M$ with edge singularities with cone angle $2πβ$ along a smooth divisor $D$. We prove existence of such metrics with negative, zero and some positive cases for all cone angles $2πβ\leq 2π$. The results in the positive case parallel those in the smooth case. We also establish that solutions of this problem are polyhomogeneous, i.e., have a complete asymptotic expansion with smooth coefficients along $D$ for all $2πβ< 2π$.
We partially confirm a conjecture of Donaldson relating the greatest Ricci lower bound $R(X)$ to the existence of conical Kahler-Einstein metrics on a Fano manifold $X$. In particular, if $D\in |-K_X|$ is a smooth simple divisor and the Mabuchi $K$-energy is bounded below, then there exists a unique conical Kahler-Einstein metric satisfying $Ric(g) = βg + (1-β) [D]$ for any $β\in (0,1)$. We also construct unique smooth conical toric Kahler-Einstein metrics with $β=R(X)$ and a unique effective Q-divisor $D\in [-K_X]$ for all toric Fano manifolds. Finally we prove a Miyaoka-Yau type inequality f…
In this paper we study the problem of prescribing the $\bar Q^{\prime}$-curvature on pseudo-Einstein CR 3-manifolds. In the first stage we study the problem in the compact setting and we show that under natural assumptions, one can prescribe any positive CR pluriharmonic function. In the second stage we study the problem in the non-compact setting of the Heisenberg group. Under mild assumptions on the prescribed function, we prove the existence of a one parameter family of solutions. In fact, we show that one can find two kinds of solutions: normal ones that satisfy an isoperimetric inequality…
In this paper we study the deformation theory of submanifolds characterized by a system of differential forms and provide a criterion for deformations of such submanifolds to be unobstructed. We apply this deformation theory to special Legendrian submanifolds in Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. In general, special Legendrian deformations have the obstruction. However, we show that the deformation space of special Legendrian submanifolds is the intersection of two larger smooth deformation spaces of different types. We also prove that any special Legendrian submanifold admits smooth deformations, whi…
In this paper, we study the regularity of asymptotically hyperbolic metrics with Einstein condition near boundary and Weyl curvature smooth enough in arbitrary dimension. Following Michael Anderson's method, we show that $C^{m,α}$ conformally compact Riemannian metrics with Einstein equation vanishing to finite order near boundary have conformal compactifications that are $C^{m+2,α}$ up to the boundary when Weyl curvature is in $C^{m,α}$ and the boundary metric is in $C^{m+2,α}$ where $m\geq 3.$
This article presents a new and more elementary proof of the main Seiberg-Witten-based obstruction to the existence of Einstein metrics on smooth compact 4-manifolds. It also introduces a new smooth manifold invariant which conveniently encapsulates those aspects of Seiberg-Witten theory most relevant to the study of Riemannian variational problems on 4-manifolds.
We construct Kahler-Einstein metrics with negative scalar curvature near an isolated log canonical (non-log terminal) singularity. Such metrics are complete near the singularity if the underlying space has complex dimension 2 or if the singularity is smoothable. In complex dimension 2, we show that any complete Kahler-Einstein metric of negative scalar curvature near an isolated log canonical (non-log terminal) singularity is smoothly asymptotically close to one of the model metrics constructed by Kobayashi and Nakamura arising from hyperbolic geometry.
We study the Einstein-Dirac equation as well as the weak Killing equation on Riemannian spin manifolds with codimension one foliation. We prove that, for any manifold $M^n$ admitting real Killing spinors (resp. parallel spinors), there exist warped product metrics $\barη$ on $M^n \times {\mathbb R}$ such that $(M^n \times {\mathbb R}, \barη)$ admit Einstein spinors (resp. weak Killing spinors). To prove the result we split the Einstein-Dirac equation into evolution equations and constraints, by means of Cartan's frame formalism, and apply the local preservation property of constraints.
We introduce and study the notion of the energy of a smooth metric measure space, which includes as special cases the Yamabe constant and Perelman's $ν$-entropy. We then investigate some properties the energy shares with these constants, in particular its relationship with the $κ$-noncollapsing property. Finally, we use the energy to prove a precompactness theorem for the space of compact quasi-Einstein smooth metric measure spaces, in the spirit of similar results for Einstein metrics and gradient Ricci solitons.
Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian $n$-manifold, we denote by $\Ric$ and $\Scal$ the Ricci and the scalar curvatures of $g$. For scalars $k<n$, the modified Einstein tensors denoted $\Eink$ are defined as $\Eink :=\Scal \, g -k\Ric$. Note that the usual Einstein tensor coincides with the half of $\Eint$ and ${\rm Ein}_0=\Scal.g$. It turns out that all these new modified tensors, for $0<k<n$, are still gradients of the total scalar curvature functional but with respect to modified integral scalar products. In this paper we study the positivity properties of these tensors that generalize the positivity…
In this paper we introduce the "interpolation-degneration" strategy to study Kahler-Einstein metrics on a smooth Fano manifold with cone singularities along a smooth divisor that is proportional to the anti-canonical divisor. By "interpolation" we show the angles in $(0, 2π]$ that admit a conical Kahler-Einstein metric form an interval; and by "degeneration" we figure out the boundary of the interval. As a first application, we show that there exists a Kahler-Einstein metric on $P^2$ with cone singularity along a smooth conic (degree 2) curve if and only if the angle is in $(π/2, 2π]$. When th…
