Using polynomial evaluation, we give some useful criteria to answer questions about divisibility of polynomials. This allows us to develop interesting results concerning the prime elements in the domain of coefficients. In particular, it is possible to prove that under certain conditions, the domain of coefficients must have infinitely many prime elements. We give alternative characterizations for D-rings and present various examples.
It is well-known that the factorization properties of a domain are reflected in the structure of its group of divisibility. The main theme of this paper is to introduce a topological/graph-theoretic point of view to the current understanding of factorization in integral domains. We also show that connectedness properties in the graph and topological space give rise to a generalization of atomicity.
We review the definition of D-rings introduced by H. Gunji & D. L. MacQuillan. We provide an alternative characterization for such rings that allows us to give an elementary proof of that a ring of algebraic integers is a D-ring. Moreover, we give a characterization for D-rings that are also unique factorization domains to determine divisibility of polynomials using polynomial evaluations.
In this paper, we address various aspects of divisibility by irreducibles in rings consisting of integer-valued polynomials. An integral domain is called atomic if every nonzero nonunit factors into irreducibles. Atomic domains that do not satisfy the ascending chain condition on principal ideals (ACCP) have proved to be elusive, and not many of them have been found since the first one was constructed by A. Grams in 1974. Here we exhibit the first class of atomic rings of integer-valued polynomials without the ACCP. An integral domain is called a finite factorization domain (FFD) if it is simu…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field of $q$ elements with characteristic $p$. Let $\mathbb{Z}_q$ denote the unramified extension of the $p$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with residue field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this paper, we investigate the $q$-divisibility for the number of solutions of a polynomial system in $n$ variables over the finite Witt ring $\mathbb{Z}_q/p^m\mathbb{Z}_q$, where the $n$ variables of the polynomials are restricted to run through a combinatorial box lifting $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. The introduction of the combinatorial box makes the problem much more complicated. We prove a …
Mott noted a one-to-one correspondence between saturated multiplicatively closed subsets of a domain D and directed convex subgroups of the group of divisibility D. With this, we construct a functor between inclusions into saturated localizations of D and projections onto partially ordered quotient groups of G(D). We use this functor to construct many cochain complexes of o-homomorphisms of po-groups. These complexes naturally lead to some fundamental structure theorems and some natural homology theory that provide insight into the factorization behavior of D.
It is well-known that a class of all modules, which are torsion-free with respect to a set of ideals, is closed under injective envelopes. In this paper, we consider a kind of a dual to this statement - are the divisibility classes closed under flat covers? - and argue that this is seldom the case. More precisely, we show that the class of all divisible modules over an integral domain R is closed under flat covers if and only if R is almost perfect. Also, we show that if the class of all s-divisible modules, where s is a regular element of a commutative ring R, is closed under flat covers then…
Given a certain factorization property of a ring $R$, we can ask if this property extends to the polynomial ring over $R$ or vice versa. For example, it is well known that $R$ is a unique factorization domain if and only if $R[X]$ is a unique factorization domain. If $R$ is not a domain, this is no longer true. In this paper we survey unique factorization in commutative rings with zero divisors, and characterize when a polynomial ring over an arbitrary commutative ring has unique factorization.
Recently there has been a flurry of research on generalized factorization techniques in both integral domains and rings with zero-divisors, namely $τ$-factorization. There are several ways that authors have studied factorization in rings with zero-divisors. This paper focuses on the method of regular factorizations introduced by D.D. Anderson and S. Valdes-Leon. We investigate how one can extend the notion of $τ$-factorization to commutative rings with zero-divisors by using the regular factorization approach. The study of regular factorization is particularly effective because the distinct no…
Recently substantial progress has been made on generalized factorization techniques in integral domains, in particular $τ$-factorization. There has also been advances made in investigating factorization in commutative rings with zero-divisors. One approach which has been found to be very successful is that of U-factorization introduced by C.R. Fletcher. We seek to synthesize work done in these two areas by generalizing $τ$-factorization to rings with zero-divisors by using the notion of U-factorization.
Much work has been done on generalized factorization techniques in integral domains, namely $τ$-factorization. There has also been substantial progress made in investigating factorization in commutative rings with zero-divisors. There are many ways authors have decided to study factorization when zero-divisors present. This paper focuses on the method $τ$-complete factorizations developed by D.D. Anderson and A. Frazier. There is a natural way to extend $τ$-complete factorization to commutative rings with zero-divisors. $τ$-complete factorization is a natural way to think of refining factoriza…
Much work has been done on generalized factorization techniques in integral domains, namely $τ$-factorization. There has also been substantial progress made in investigating factorization in commutative rings with zero-divisors. This paper seeks to synthesize work done in these two areas and extend the notion of $τ$-factorization to commutative rings that need not be domains. In addition, we look into particular types of $τ$ relations, which are interesting when there are zero-divisors present. We then proceed to classify commutative rings that satisfy the finite factorization properties given…
We use the concept of 2-absorbing ideal introduced by Badawi to study those commutative rings in which every proper ideal is a product of 2-absorbing ideals (we call them TAF-rings). Any TAF-ring has dimension at most one and the local TAF-domains are the atomic pseudo-valuation domains.
In this paper we study the concept of radical factorization in the context of abstract ideal theory in order to obtain a unified approach to the theory of factorization into radical ideals and elements in the literature of commutative rings, monoids and ideal systems. Using this approach we derive new characterizations of classes of rings whose ideals are a product of radical ideals, and we obtain also similar characterizations for classes of ideal systems in monoids and star ideals in integral domains.
We give several criteria for a ring to be a UFD including generalizations of some criteria due to P. Samuel. These criteria are applied to construct, for any field k, (1) a Z-graded non-noetherian rational UFD of dimension three over k, and (2) k-affine rational UFDs defined by trinomial relations.
In this paper, we study the classes of rings in which every proper (regular) ideal can be factored as an invertible ideal times a nonempty product of proper radical ideals. More precisely, we investigate the stability of these properties under homomorphic image and their transfer to various contexts of constructions such as direct product, trivial ring extension and amalgamated duplication of a ring along an ideal. Our results generate examples that enrich the current literature with new and original families of rings satisfying these properties.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring. We give criteria for flatness of $R$-modules in terms of associated primes and torsion-freeness of certain tensor products. This allows us to develop a criterion for regularity if $R$ has characteristic $p$, or more generally if it has a locally contracting endomorphism. Dualizing, we give criteria for injectivity of $R$-modules in terms of coassociated primes and (h-)divisibility of certain $\Hom$-modules. Along the way, we develop tools to achieve such a dual result. These include a careful analysis of the notions of divisibility and h-divisibility (…
We investigate Cohen factorizations of local ring homomorphisms from three perspectives. First, we prove a "weak functoriality" result for Cohen factorizations: certain morphisms of local ring homomorphisms induce morphisms of Cohen factorizations. Second, we use Cohen factorizations to study the properties of local ring homomorphisms (Gorenstein, Cohen-Macaulay, etc.) in certain commutative diagrams. Third, we use Cohen factorizations to investigate the structure of quasi-deformations of local rings, with an eye on the question of the behavior of CI-dimension in short exact sequences.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with nonzero identity. A. Yassine et al. defined in the paper (Yassine, Nikmehr and Nikandish, 2020), the concept of $1$-absorbing prime ideals as follows: a proper ideal $I$ of $R$ is said to be a $1$-absorbing prime ideal if whenever $xyz\in I$ for some nonunit elements $x,y,z\in R$, then either $xy\in I$ or $z\in\ I$. We use the concept of $1$-absorbing prime ideals to study those commutative rings in which every proper ideal is a product of $1$-absorbing prime ideals (we call them $OAF$-rings). Any $OAF$-ring has dimension at most one and local $OAF$-domains $…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. The structure theorem says that $R$ is a PIR (resp., UFR, general ZPI-ring, $π$-ring) if and only if $R$ is a finite direct product of PIDs (resp., UFDs, Dedekind domains, $π$-domains) and special primary rings. All of these four types of integral domains are Krull domains, so motivated by the structure theorem, we study the prime factorization of ideals in a ring that is a finite direct product of Krull domains and special primary rings. Such a ring will be called a general Krull ring. It is known that Krull domains can be characterized by the star…
We introduce and investigate the category of factorization of a multiplicative, commutative, cancellative, pre-ordered monoid $A$, which we denote $\mathcal{F}(A)$. The objects of $\mathcal{F}(A)$ are factorizations of elements of $A$, and the morphisms in $\mathcal{F}(A)$ encode combinatorial similarities and differences between the factorizations. We pay particular attention to the divisibility pre-order and to the monoid $A=D\setminus\{0\}$ where $D$ is an integral domain. Among other results, we show that $\mathcal{F}(A)$ is a symmetric and strict monoidal category with weak equivalences a…
For an integral domain $R$ and a commutative cancellative monoid $M$, the ring consisting of all polynomial expressions with coefficients in $R$ and exponents in $M$ is called the monoid ring of $M$ over $R$. An integral domain is called atomic if every nonzero nonunit element can be written as a product of irreducibles. In the investigation of the atomicity of integral domains, the building blocks are the irreducible elements. Thus, tools to prove irreducibility are crucial to study atomicity. In the first part of this paper, we extend Gauss's Lemma and Eisenstein's Criterion from polynomial …
We consider the degrees of the elements of a homogeneous system of parameters for the ring of invariants of a binary form, give a divisibility condition, and a complete classification for forms of degree at most 8.
We give a proof of local strong factorization of a birational extension of regular local rings (of equicharacteristic zero) along a valuation of rank 1 and maximal rational rank. This gives an alternate proof to the geometric proof of this Theorem by Karu. Our proof uses only linear algebra, and is in the spirit of Christensen's proof of this result in dimension 3.
In this paper we investigate the concept of radical factorization with respect to finitary ideal systems of cancellative monoids. We present new characterizations for r-almost Dedekind r-SP-monoids and provide specific descriptions of t-almost Dedekind t-SP-monoids and w-SP-monoids. We show that a monoid is a w-SP-monoid if and only if the radical of every nontrivial principal ideal is t-invertible. We characterize when the monoid ring is a w-SP-domain and describe when the *-Nagata ring is an SP-domain for a star operation * of finite type.
Let $S$ be a commutative noetherian ring. The extensions of matrix factorizations of non-zerodivisors $x_1,\dots,x_n$ of $S$ form a full subcategory of finitely generated modules over the quotient ring $S/(x_1\cdots x_n)$. In this paper, we investigate the radius (in the sense of Dao and Takahashi) of this full subcategory. As an application, we obtain an upper bound of the dimension (in the sense of Rouquier) of the singularity category of a local hypersurface of dimension one, which refines a recent result of Kawasaki, Nakamura and Shimada.
Let $D$ be an integral domain. A nonzero nonunit $a$ of $D$ is called a valuation element if there is a valuation overring $V$ of $D$ such that $aV\cap D=aD$. We say that $D$ is a valuation factorization domain (VFD) if each nonzero nonunit of $D$ can be written as a finite product of valuation elements. In this paper, we study some ring-theoretic properties of VFDs. Among other things, we show that (i) a VFD $D$ is Schreier, and hence ${\rm Cl}_t(D)=\{0\}$, (ii) if $D$ is a P$v$MD, then $D$ is a VFD if and only if $D$ is a weakly Matlis GCD-domain, if and only if $D[X]$, the polynomial ring o…
Let P be a commutative Noetherian ring, K be an ideal of P which is generated by a regular sequence of length four, f be a regular element of P, and Pbar be the hypersurface ring P/(f). Assume that K:f is a grade four Gorenstein ideal of P. We give a resolution N of Pbar/K Pbar by free Pbar-modules. The resolution N is built from a Differential Graded Algebra resolution of P/(K:f) by free P-modules, together with one homotopy map. In particular, we give an explicit form for the matrix factorization which is the infinite tail of the resolution N.
Let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. A well-known factorization problem is whether any matrix in $\mathrm{SL}_n(R)$ is a product of elementary matrices with entries in $R$. To solve the problem, we use two approaches based on the notion of the Bass stable rank and on construction of a null-homotopy. Special attention is given to the case, where $R$ is a ring or Banach algebra of holomorphic functions. Also, we consider a related problem on representation of a matrix in $\mathrm{GL}_n(R)$ as a product of exponentials.
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a complete local (Noetherian) ring to be the completion of an uncountable local (Noetherian) domain with a countable spectrum. Our results suggest that uncountable local domains with countable spectra are more common than previously thought. We also characterize completions of uncountable excellent local domains with countable spectra assuming the completion contains the rationals, completions of uncountable local unique factorization domains with countable spectra, completions of uncountable noncatenary local domains with countable spectra, and …
We present a generalization of a polynomial factorization algorithm that works with ideals in maximal orders of global function fields. The method presented in this paper is intrinsic in the sense that it does not depend on the embedding of the ring of polynomials into the Dedekind domain in question.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. An element $r \in R$ is said to be absolutely irreducible in $R$ if for all natural numbers $n>1$, $r^n$ has essentially only one factorization namely $r^n = r \cdots r$. If $r \in R$ is irreducible in $R$ but for some $n>1$, $r^n$ has other factorizations distinct from $r^n = r \cdots r$, then $r$ is called non-absolutely irreducible. In this paper, we construct non-absolutely irreducible elements in the ring $\text{Int}(\mathbb{Z}) = \{f\in \mathbb{Q}[x] \mid f(\mathbb{Z}) \subseteq \mathbb{Z}\}$ of integer-valued polynomials. We also give general…
Let T be a complete local (Noetherian) equidimensional ring with maximal ideal m such that the Krull dimension of T is at least two and the depth of T is at least two. Suppose that no integer of T is a zerodivisor and that |T|=|T/m|. Let d and t be integers such that 1 $\leq$ d $\leq$ dimT-1, 0 $\leq$ t $\leq$ dimT - 1, and d - 1 $\leq$ t. Assume that, for every p in AssT, ht(p) $\leq$ d-1 and that if z is a regular element of T and Q is in Ass(T/zT), then ht(Q) $\leq$ d. We construct a local unique factorization domain A such that the completion of A is T and such that the dimension of the fo…
Drawing inspiration from Emmy Noether'set-theoretic foundations for algebra and Charles Ehresmann's topology without points, we adopt a new order-theoretic approach to ideal theory. For this we emphasize the order of divisibility in factorization and use it as a medium for relating algebra to topology 1. Replacing principal ideals and their intersections by equivalence classes and their collections respectively, we transform integral divisorial ideals into B-ideals in order to provide an order-theoretic frame for treating decomposition dispensing with addition. The idea of a B-ideal is connect…
We introduce the concept of multiplicatively closed subsets of a commutative ring $R$ which split an $R$-module $M$ and study factorization properties of elements of $M$ with respect to such a set. Also we demonstrate how one can utilize this concept to investigate factorization properties of $R$ and deduce some Nagata type theorems relating factorization properties of $R$ to those of its localizations, when $R$ is an integral domain.
We investigate non-unique factorization of polynomials in Z_{p^n}[x] into irreducibles. As a Noetherian ring whose zero-divisors are contained in the Jacobson radical, Z_{p^n}[x] is atomic. We reduce the question of factoring arbitrary non-zero polynomials into irreducibles to the problem of factoring monic polynomials into monic irreducibles. The multiplicative monoid of monic polynomials of Z_{p^n}[x] is a direct sum of monoids corresponding to irreducible polynomials in Z_p[x], and we show that each of these monoids has infinite elasticity. Moreover, for every positive integer m, there exis…
In this article, applying the quasi-Gorenstein analogous of the Ulrich's deformation of certain Gorenstein rings we show that some homological conjectures, including the Monomial Conjecture, Big Cohen-Macaulay Algebra Conjecture as well as the Small Cohen-Macaulay Conjecture reduce to the excellent unique factorization domains. Some other reductions of the Monomial Conjecture are also proved. We, moreover, show that certain almost complete intersections adhere the Monomial Conjecture.
We observe that there is an equivalence between the singularity category of an affine complete intersection and the homotopy category of matrix factorizations over a related scheme. This relies in part on a theorem of Orlov. Using this equivalence, we give a geometric construction of the ring of cohomology operators, and a generalization of the theory of support varieties, which we call stable support sets. We settle a question of Avramov about which stable support sets can arise for a given complete intersection ring. We also use the equivalence to construct a projective resolution of a modul…
We study a numerical semigroup ring as an algebra over another numerical semigroup ring. The complete intersection property of numerical semigroup algebras is investigated using factorizations of monomials into minimal ones. The goal is to study whether a flat rectangular algebra is a complete intersection. Along this direction, special types of algebras generated by few monomials are worked out in detail.
We prove that one can realize certain triangulated subcategories of the singularity category of a complete intersection as homotopy categories of matrix factorizations. Moreover, we prove that for any commutative ring and non-zerodivisor, the homotopy category of matrix factorizations embeds into the homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes of finitely generated projective modules over the factor ring.
We extend a factorization theorem by Gwoździewicz and Hejmej from the ring of formal power series to any complete regular local ring $ R $. More precisely, let $ f \in R $ and assume that its Newton polyhedron has a loose edge such that the initial formal of $ f $ along the latter is a product of two coprime polynomials, where one of them is not divided by any variable. Then this provides a factorization of $ f $ in $ R $. As a consequence we obtain a factorization theorem for Weierstraß polynomials with coefficients in $ R $, which generalizes an earlier result by Rond and the author.
