We compute the class groups of very general normal surfaces in complex projective three-space containing an arbitrary base locus $Z$, thereby extending the classic Noether-Lefschetz theorem (the case when $Z$ is empty). Our method is an adaptation of Griffiths and Harris' degeneration proof, simplified by a cohomology and base change argument. We give applications to computing Picard groups, which generalize several known results.
We study an analogue of the Noether-Lefschetz theorem in the context of Beilinson's Hodge conjecture. We estimate the dimension of the Noether-Lefschetz locus by the infinitesimal methods in Hodge theory.
The main subject of study in this paper is the Noether-Lefschetz locus for Beilinson-Hodge cycles on the complement of the union of hyperplane sections in a surface in $\Bbb P^3$. We give an analogue of the result by M.Green and C.Voisin on the maximal components in the Noether-Lefschetz locus.
We study the Noether-Lefschetz locus of a very ample line bundle L on an arbitrary smooth threefold Y. Building on results of Green, Voisin and Otwinowska, we give explicit bounds, depending only on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity properties of L, on the codimension of the components of the Noether-Lefschetz locus of |L|.
Let Z be a general surface in P^3 of degree at least 5. Using a Lefschetz pencil argument, we give an elementary new proof of the vanishing of a regulator on K_1(Z).
We extend results on generic strange duality for K3 surfaces by showing that the proposed isomorphism holds over an entire Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the moduli space of quasipolarized K3s. We interpret the statement globally as an isomorphism of sheaves over this divisor, and also describe the global construction over the space of polarized K3s.
For a fixed integer $d \ge 5$, the Noether-Lefschetz locus parametrizes smooth degree $d$ complex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Picard number greater than $1$. There are infinitely many irreducible components of this locus. The aim of this article is to understand the scheme structure of these components. In particular, we study when is such a component non-reduced. We give a criterion for such a component to be non-reduced. Finally, we give examples of such components.
We provide a classification of developable cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^4$. Using the correspondence between forms of degree $3$ on $\mathbb P^4$ and Artinian Gorenstein $\mathbb K$-algebras, given by Macaulay-Matlis duality, we describe the locus in ${\rm GOR}(1,5,5,1)$ corresponding to those algebras which satisfy the Strong Lefschetz property.
We prove that there exist smooth surfaces of degree d in projective 3-space such that the group of rational equivalence classes of decomposable 0-cycles has rank at least the integer part of (d-1)/3.
The Gromov-Witten theory of threefolds admitting a smooth K3 fibration can be solved in terms of the Noether-Lefschetz intersection numbers of the fibration and the reduced invariants of a K3 surface. Toward a generalization of this result to families with singular fibers, we introduce completed Noether-Lefschetz numbers using toroidal compactifications of the period space of elliptic K3 surfaces. As an application, we prove quasi-modularity for some genus 0 partition functions of Weierstrass fibrations over ruled surfaces, and show that they satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation.
We consider the Noether-Lefschetz problem for surfaces in Q-factorial normal 3-folds with rational singularities. We show the existence of components of the Noether-Lefschetz locus of maximal codimension, and that there are indeed infinitely many of them. Moreover, we show that their union is dense in the natural topology.
For a fixed integer $d$, we study here the locus of degree $d$ hypersurfaces $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^{2n+1}$ such that $H^{2n}(X,\mathbb{Q}) \cap H^{n,n}(X,\mathbb{C}) \not= \mathbb{Q}$. We call this locus \textit{the Noether-Lefschetz locus}. Any irreducible component of this locus is locally a Hodge locus. So, we see that the study of this locus is very closely related to the variational Hodge conjecture. In this article we show that the Hodge locus corresponding to the cohomology class of a complete intersection subscheme in $\mathbb{P}^{2n+1}$ of codimension $n+1$ and degree less than $d$ satis…
We compute the divisor class group of the general hypersurface Y of a complex projective normal variety X of dimension at least four containing a fixed base locus Z. We deduce that completions of normal local complete intersection domains of finite type over the complex numbers of dimension $\ge 4$ are completions of UFDs of finite type over the complex numbers.
Noether-Lefschetz divisors in the moduli of K3 surfaces are the loci corresponding to Picard rank at least 2. We relate the degrees of the Noether-Lefschetz divisors in 1-parameter families of K3 surfaces to the Gromov-Witten theory of the 3-fold total space. The reduced K3 theory and the Yau-Zaslow formula play an important role. We use results of Borcherds and Kudla-Millson for O(2,19) lattices to determine the Noether-Lefschetz degrees in classical families of K3 surfaces of degrees 2, 4, 6 and 8. For the quartic K3 surfaces, the Noether-Lefschetz degrees are proven to be the Fourier coeffi…
We describe the Hodge theory of brilliant families of K3 surfaces. Their characteristic feature is a close link between the Hodge structures of any two fibres over points in the Noether-Lefschetz locus. Twistor deformations, the analytic Tate-Safarevic group, and one-dimensional Shimura special cycles are covered by the theory. In this setting, the Brauer group is viewed as the Noether-Lefschetz locus of the Brauer family or as the specialization of the Noether-Lefschetz loci in a family of approaching twistor spaces. Passing from one algebraic twistor fibre to another, which by construction i…
Let $Z$ be a closed subscheme of a smooth complex projective complete intersection variety $Y\subseteq \Ps^N$, with $dim Y=2r+1\geq 3$. We describe the Néron-Severi group $NS_r(X)$ of a general smooth hypersurface $X\subset Y$ of sufficiently large degree containing $Z$.
Let $Z$ be a closed subscheme of a smooth complex projective variety $Y\subseteq \Ps^N$, with $\dim\,Y=2r+1\geq 3$. We describe the intermediate Néron-Severi group (i.e. the image of the cycle map $A_r(X)\to H_{2r}(X;\mathbb{Z})$) of a general smooth hypersurface $X\subset Y$ of sufficiently large degree containing $Z$.
We continue our study of the Noether-Lefschetz loci in toric varieties and investigate deformation of pairs (V,X) where V is a complete intersection subvariety and X a quasi-smooth hypersurface in a odd dimensional simplicial projective toric variety, with V\subset X. Under some assumptions, we prove that the cohomological class in H^{k,k}(X) associated to V remains of type (k,k) under an infinitesimal deformation if and only if V remains algebraic. Actually we prove that locally the Noether-Lefschetz locus is an irreducible component of a suitable Hilbert scheme. This generalizes Theorem 4.2 …
We provide methods to construct explicit examples of $K3$ surfaces. This leads to unirational constructions of Noether--Lefschetz divisors inside the moduli space of $K3$ surfaces of genus $g$. We implement Mukai's unirationality construction of the moduli spaces of $K3$ surfaces of genus $g\in\{6,\dots, 10, 12\}$, and we also present a new constructive proof of the unirationality of the moduli space of $K3$ surfaces of genus $11$. Furthermore, we show the existence of three unirational hypersurfaces in any moduli space of $K3$ surfaces of genus $g$.
The Noether-Lefschetz theorem asserts that any curve in a very general surface $X$ in $\mathbb P^3$ of degree $d \geq 4$ is a restriction of a surface in the ambient space, that is, the Picard number of $X$ is $1$. We proved previously that under some conditions, which replace the condition $d \geq 4$, a very general surface in a simplicial toric threefold $\mathbb P_Σ$ (with orbifold singularities) has the same Picard number as $\mathbb P_Σ$. Here we define the Noether-Lefschetz loci of quasi-smooth surfaces in $\mathbb P_Σ$ in a linear system of a Cartier ample divisor with respect to a (-1)…
We use Noether-Lefschetz theory to study the reduced Gromov--Witten invariants of a holomorphic-symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type. This yields strong evidence for a new conjectural formula that expresses Gromov-Witten invariants of this geometry for arbitrary classes in terms of primitive classes. The formula generalizes an earlier conjecture by Pandharipande and the author for K3 surfaces. Using Gromov-Witten techniques we also determine the generating series of Noether-Lefschetz numbers of a general pencil of Debarre-Voisin varieties. This reproves and extends a result of Debarre, Han, O…
We show that the set of real polynomials in two variables that are sums of three squares of rational functions is dense in the set of those that are positive semidefinite. We also prove that the set of real surfaces in P^3 whose function field has level 2 is dense in the set of those that have no real points.
We calculate the Picard group of generic (very general) spectral varieties living in the total space of a very ample line bundle over an algebraically closed field $k$ of odd characteristics or characteristic 0. We follow the strategy of Ravindra and Srinivas [RS06,RS09] via formal Picard groups. As an application, we calculate the generic fibers of Hitchin systems over a smooth quintic surface of Picard number 1.
In this note we derive from deep results due to Clozel-Ullmo the density of Noether-Lefschetz loci inside the moduli space of marked (polarized) irreducible holomorphic symplectic (IHS) varieties. In particular we obtain the density of Hilbert schemes of points on projective $K3$ surfaces and of projective generalized Kummer varieties in their moduli spaces. We present applications to the existence of rational curves on projective deformations of such varieties, to the study of relevant cones of divisors, and a refinement of Hassett's result on cubic fourfolds whose Fano variety of lines is is…
Consider a smooth projective 3-fold $X$ satisfying the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda (such as $\mathbb P^3$, the quintic threefold or an abelian threefold). Let $L$ be a line bundle supported on a very positive surface in $X$. If $c_1(L)$ is a primitive cohomology class then we show it has very negative square.
For an algebraic K3 surface with complex multiplication (CM), algebraic fibres of the associated twistor space away from the equator are again of CM type. In this paper, we show that algebraic fibres corresponding to points at the same altitude of the twistor base $S^2\simeq \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{C}$ share the same CM endomorphism field. Moreover, we determine all the admissible Picard numbers of the twistor fibres.
We study the weak Lefschetz property of artinian Gorenstein algebras and in particular of artinian complete intersections. In codimension four and higher, it is an open problem whether all complete intersections have the weak Lefschetz property. For a given artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ we ask what linear forms are Lefschetz elements for this particular algebra, i.e., which linear forms $\ell$ give maximal rank for all the multiplication maps $\times \ell: [A]_i \longrightarrow [A]_{i+1}$. This is a Zariski open set and its complement is the \emph{non-Lefschetz locus}. For monomial complete …

In this paper, we study maps between moduli spaces of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces induced by sublattices of prime index. We show that these maps can be used to determine if a rational point of the moduli space belongs to the Noether-Lefschetz locus. As an application, we prove that the Bombieri-Lang conjecture implies non-density statements for the rational points in the Noether-Lefschetz locus, as predicted by a conjecture of Shafarevich.
We provide an example of a trivalent, 3-connected graph G such that, for any choice of metric on G, the resulting metric graph is Brill-Noether special.
Let X be a very general complete intersection in complex projective space and we denote by $F_r(X)$ the variety of r-planes in X, for $r\geq 1$. We show that the Picard number of $F_r(X)$ is 1, as soon as $\dim F_r(X)\geq 2$, except when X is a quadric of dimension 2r or 2r+2, or X is a complete intersection of two quadrics of dimension 2r+2. We also apply this result to determine the cohomology class of the variety of planes of a cubic fivefold contained (by the Abel-Jacobi map) in the intermediate Jacobian.
We enumerate smooth rational curves on very general Weierstrass fibrations over hypersurfaces in projective space. The generating functions for these numbers lie in the ring of classical modular forms. The method of proof uses topological intersection products on a period stack and the cohomological theta correspondence of Kudla and Millson for special cycles on a locally symmetric space of orthogonal type. The results here apply only in base degree 1, but heuristics for higher base degree match predictions from the topological string partition function.
We prove that a certain Brill-Noether locus over a non-hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus 4, is isomorphic to the \textit{Donagi-Izadi cubic threefold} in the case when the pencils of the two trigonal line bundles of $C$ coincide.
Let $C\subset \mathbb P^r$ be an integral projective curve. We define the speciality index $e(C)$ of $C$ as the maximal integer $t$ such that $h^0(C,ω_C(-t))>0$, where $ω_C$ denotes the dualizing sheaf of $C$. In the present paper we consider $C\subset \mathbb P^5$ an integral degree $d$ curve and we denote by $s$ the minimal degree for which there exists a hypersurface of degree $s$ containing $C$. We assume that $C$ is contained in two smooth hypersurfaces $F$ and $G$, with $deg(F)=n>k=deg (G)$. We assume additionally that $F$ is Noether-Lefschetz general, i.e. that the $2$-th Néron-Severi g…
In this paper we consider the Brill-Noether locus $W_{\underline d}(C)$ of line bundles of multidegree $\underline d$ of total degree $g-1$ having a nonzero section on a nodal reducible curve $C$ of genus $g\geq2$. We give an explicit description of the irreducible components of $W_{\underline d}(C)$ for a semistable multidegre $\underline d$. As a consequence we show that, if two semistable multidegrees of total degre $g-1$ on a curve with no rational components differ by a twister, then the respective Brill-Noether loci have isomorphic components.
We prove the Noether-Lefschetz conjecture on the moduli space of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces. This is deduced as a particular case of a general theorem that states that low degree cohomology classes of arithmetic manifolds of orthogonal type are dual to the classes of special cycles, i.e. sub-arithmetic manifolds of the same type. For compact manifolds this was proved in \cite{BMM11}, here we extend the results of \cite{BMM11} to non-compact manifolds. This allows us to apply our results to the moduli spaces of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces.
New local and global non-abelian zeta functions for elliptic curves are studied using certain refined Brill-Noether loci in moduli spaces of semi-stable bundles. Examples of these zeta functions and a justification of using only semi-stable bundles are given too. We end this paper with an appendix on the so-called Weierstrass Groups for general curves, which is motivated by a construction of Euler systems from torsion points (of elliptic curves).
In [1309.1899], Ranestad and Voisin showed, quite surprisingly, that the divisor in the moduli space of cubic fourfolds consisting of cubics "apolar to a Veronese surface" is not a Noether-Lefschetz divisor. We give an independent proof of this by exhibiting an explicit cubic fourfold X in the divisor and using point counting methods over finite fields to show X is Noether-Lefschetz general. We also show that two other divisors considered in [ibid.] are not Noether-Lefschetz divisors.
Let C be a smooth projective complex curve of genus $g\geq2$. We investigate the Brill-Noether locus consisting of stable bundles of rank 2 and canonical determinant having at least $k$ independent sections. Using the Hecke correpondence we construct a fundamental class, which determines the non-emptiness of this locus at least when $C$ is a Petri curve. We prove that in many expected cases the Brill-Noether locus is non-empty. For some values of $k$ the result is best possible.
Given the Prym variety of an étale double cover one can define analogues of the classical Brill-Noether loci on Jacobians of curves. Recent work by Lahoz and Naranjo shows that the Brill-Noether locus $V^2$ completely determines the covering. In this paper we describe the singular locus and the irreducible components of $V^2$.
Given a family $π:\mc{X} \rightarrow B$ of smooth projective varieties, a closed fiber $\mc{X}_o$ and an invertible sheaf $\mc{L}$ on $\mc{X}_o$, we compare the Hodge locus in $B$ corresponding to the Hodge class $c_1(\mc{L})$ with the locus of points $b\,\in\, B$ such that $\mc{L}$ deforms to an invertible sheaf $\mc{L}_b$ on $\mc{X}_b$ with at least $h^0(\mc{L})$--dimensional space of global sections (it is a Brill-Noether type locus associated to $\mc{L}$). We finally give an application by comparing the Brill-Noether locus to a family of curves on a surface passing through a fixed set of p…
Let $C$ be a smooth projective complex curve of genus $g \geq 2$. We investigate the Brill-Noether locus consisting of stable bundles of rank 2 and determinant $L$ of odd degree $d$ having at least $k$ independent sections. This locus possesses a virtual fundamental class. We show that in many cases this class is non-zero, which implies that the Brill-Noether locus is non-empty. For many values of $d$ and $k$ the result is best possible. We obtain more precise results for $k\le5$. An appendix contains the proof of a combinatorial lemma which we need.
Let $X \subset \mathbb P^3$ be a very general sextic surface over complex numbers. In this paper we study certain Brill-Noether problems for moduli of rank $2$ stable bundles on $X$ and its relation with rank $2$ weakly Ulrich and Ulrich bundles. In particular, we show the non-emptiness of certain Brill-Noether loci and using the geometry of the moduli and the notion of the Petri map on higher dimensional varieties, we prove the existence of components of expected dimension. We also give sufficient conditions for the existence of rank $2$ weakly Ulrich bundles $\mathcal E$ on $X$ with $c_1(\ma…
