Let s<t be two fixed positive integers. We study what are the minimum degree conditions for a bipartite graph G, with both color classes of size n=k(s+t), which ensure that G has a K_{s,t}-factor. Exact result for large n is given. Our result extends the work of Zhao, who determined the minimum degree threshold which guarantees that a bipartite graph has a K_{s,s}-factor.
For any bipartite graph $H$, we determine a minimum degree threshold for a balanced bipartite graph $G$ to contain a perfect $H$-tiling. We show that this threshold is best possible up to a constant depending only on $H$. Additionally, we prove a corresponding minimum degree threshold to guarantee that $G$ has an $H$-tiling missing only a constant number of vertices. Our threshold for the perfect tiling depends on either the chromatic number $χ(H)$ or the critical chromatic number $χ_{cr}(H)$ while the threshold for the almost perfect tiling only depends on $χ_{cr}(H)$. Our results answer two …
Bipartite graph tiling was studied by Zhao who gave the best possible minimum degree conditions for a balanced bipartite graph on 2ms vertices to contain m vertex disjoint copies of K_{s,s}. Let s<t be fixed positive integers. Hladký and Schacht gave minimum degree conditions for a balanced bipartite graph on 2m(s+t) vertices to contain m vertex disjoint copies of K_{s,t}. Their results were best possible, except in the case when m is odd and t> 2s+1. We give the best possible minimum degree condition in this case.
For a fixed bipartite graph H and given number c, 0<c<1, we determine the threshold T_H(c) which guarantees that any n-vertex graph with at edge density at least T_H(c) contains $(1-o(1))c/v(H) n$ vertex-disjoint copies of H. In the proof we use a variant of a technique developed by Komlos~\bcolor{[Combinatorica 20 (2000), 203-218}]
We prove that for any $r\in \mathbb{N}$, there exists a constant $C_r$ such that the following is true. Let $\mathcal{F}=\{F_1,F_2,\dots\}$ be an infinite sequence of bipartite graphs such that $|V(F_i)|=i$ and $Δ(F_i)\leq Δ$ hold for all $i$. Then in any $r$-edge coloured complete graph $K_n$, there is a collection of at most $\exp(C_rΔ)$ monochromatic subgraphs, each of which is isomorphic to an element of $\mathcal{F}$, whose vertex sets partition $V(K_n)$. This proves a conjecture of Corsten and Mendonça in a strong form and generalizes results on the multicolour Ramsey numbers of bounded-…
A technique called graphical condensation is used to prove various combinatorial identities among numbers of (perfect) matchings of planar bipartite graphs and tilings of regions. Graphical condensation involves superimposing matchings of a graph onto matchings of a smaller subgraph, and then re-partitioning the united matching (actually a multigraph) into matchings of two other subgraphs, in one of two possible ways. This technique can be used to enumerate perfect matchings of a wide variety of bipartite planar graphs. Applications include domino tilings of Aztec diamonds and rectangles, diab…
The problem of determining the optimal minimum degree condition for a balanced bipartite graph on 2ms vertices to contain m vertex disjoint copies of K_{s,s} was solved by Zhao. Later Hladký and Schacht, and Czygrinow and DeBiasio determined the optimal minimum degree condition for a balanced bipartite graph on 2m(s+t) vertices to contain m vertex disjoint copies of K_{s,t} for fixed positive integers s<t. For a balanced bipartite graph G[U,V], let δ_U be the minimum degree over all vertices in U and δ_V be the minimum degree over all vertices in V. We consider the problem of determining the o…
Generalizing results of Temperley, Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte and others we describe a natural equivalence between three planar objects: weighted bipartite planar graphs; planar Markov chains; and tilings with convex polygons. This equivalence provides a measure-preserving bijection between dimer coverings of a weighted bipartite planar graph and spanning trees on the corresponding Markov chain. The tilings correspond to harmonic functions on the Markov chain and to ``discrete analytic functions'' on the bipartite graph. The equivalence is extended to infinite periodic graphs, and we class…
F-nomial coefficients encompass among others well-known binomial coefficients or Gaussian coefficients that count subsets of finite set and subspaces of finite vector space respectively. Here, the so called F-cobweb tiling sequences N(a) are considered. For such specific sequences a new interpretation with respect to Kwasniewski general combinatorial interpretation of F-nomial coefficients is unearhed. Namely, for tiling sequences F = N(a)$ the F-nomial coefficients are equal to the number of labeled special bipartite multigraphs denoted here as a-multigraphs G(a,n,k). An explicit relation bet…
Cao & Yuan obtained a Blichfeldt-type result for the vertex set of the edge-to-edge tiling of the plane by regular hexagons. Observing that every Archimedean tiling is the union of translates of a fixed lattice, we take a more general viewpoint and investigate basic questions for such point sets about the homogeneous and inhomogeneous problem in the Geometry of Numbers. The Archimedean tilings nicely exemplify our results.
The combinatorics of tilings of a hexagon of integer side-length $n$ by 120 degree - 60 degree diamonds of side-length 1 has a long history, both directly (as a problem of interest in thermodynamic models) and indirectly (through the equivalence to plane partitions). Formulae as products of factorials have been conjectured and, one by one, proven for the number of such tilings under each of the symmetries of the hexagon. However, when this note was written the entry for the number of distinct such tilings in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) consisted of little more than a ta…
We introduce a class of graphs called compound graphs, generalizing rectangles, which are constructed out of copies of a planar bipartite base graph. The main result is that the number of perfect matchings of every compound graph is divisible by the number of matchings of its base graph. Our approach is to use Kasteleyn's theorem to prove a key lemma, from which the divisibility theorem follows combinatorially. This theorem is then applied to provide a proof of Problem 21 of Propp's Enumeration of Matchings, a divisibility property of rectangles. Finally, we present a new proof, in the same sp…
This exposition contains a short and streamlined proof of the recent result of Kwan, Letzter, Sudakov and Tran that every triangle-free graph with minimum degree $d$ contains an induced bipartite subgraph with average degree $Ω(\ln d/\ln\ln d)$.
We give a simple proof that every $n$-vertex graph $d$-regular graph that does not contain a fixed bipartite graph as a subgraph has an induced matching of size $Ω((n/d)(\log d))$.
In their unpublished work, Jockusch and Propp showed that a 2-enumeration of antisymmetric monotone triangles is given by a simple product formula. On the other hand, the author proved that the same formula counts the domino tilings of the quartered Aztec rectangle. In this paper, we explain this phenomenon directly by building a correspondence between the antisymmetric monotone triangles and domino tilings of the quartered Aztec rectangle.
This paper is devoted to present two counterexamples to the theorem from \cite{MK} Maria R., Katherine T. M., Bernardo S. M., Extremal graphs with bounded vertex bipartiteness number, Linear Algebra Appl. 493 (2016) 28-36. Moreover, the corrected theorem and proof are presented.
We show that translational tiling problems in a quotient of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ can be effectively reduced or ``simulated'' by translational tiling problems in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. In particular, for any $d \in \mathbb{N}$, $k < d$ and $N_1,\ldots,N_k \in \mathbb{N}$ the existence of an aperiodic tile in $\mathbb{Z}^{d-k} \times (\mathbb{Z} / N_1\mathbb{Z} \times \ldots \times \mathbb{Z} / N_k \mathbb{Z})$ implies the existence of an aperiodic tile in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Greenfeld and Tao have recently disproved the well-known periodic tiling conjecture in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for sufficiently large $d \in \mathb…
In 1908 Voronoi conjectured that every convex polytope which tiles space face-to-face by translations is affinely equivalent to the Dirichlet-Voronoi polytope of some lattice. In 1999 Erdahl proved this conjecture for the special case of zonotopes. A zonotope is a projection of a regular cube under some affine transformation. In 1975 McMullen showed several equivalent conditions for a zonotope to be a space tiling zonotope, i.e. a zonotope which admits a face-to-face tiling of space by translations. Implicitly, he related space tiling zonotopes to a special class of oriented matroids (regular …
It was proved by Scott that for every $k\ge2$, there exists a constant $c(k)>0$ such that for every bipartite $n$-vertex graph $G$ without isolated vertices, there exists an induced subgraph $H$ of order at least $c(k)n$ such that $\textrm{deg}_H(v) \equiv 1\pmod{k}$ for each $v \in H$. Scott conjectured that $c(k) = Ω(1/k)$, which would be tight up to the multiplicative constant. We confirm this conjecture.
Eigenvector centrality is a linear algebra based graph invariant used in various rating systems such as webpage ratings for search engines. A generalization of the eigenvector centrality invariant is defined which is motivated by the need to design rating systems for bipartite graph models of time-sensitive and other processes. The linear algebra connection and some applications are described.
Ehrenborg noted that all tilings of a bipartite planar graph are encoded by its cubical matching complex and claimed that this complex is collapsible. We point out to an oversight in his proof and explain why these complexes can be the union of collapsible complexes. Also, we prove that all links in these complexes are suspensions up to homotopy. Furthermore, we extend the definition of a cubical matching complex to planar graphs that are not necessarily bipartite, and show that these complexes are either contractible or a disjoint union of contractible complexes. For a simple connected region…
We are given a bipartite graph that contains at least one perfect matching and where each edge is colored from a set $Q=\{c_1,c_2,\ldots,c_q}\$. Let $Q_i=\set{e\in E(G):c(e)=c_i}$, where $c(e)$ denotes the color of $e$. The perfect matching color profile $mcp(G)$ is defined to be the set of vectors $(m_1,m_2,\ldots,m_q)\in [n]^q$ such that there exists a perfect matching $M$ such that $|M\cap Q_i|=m_i$. We give bounds on the matching color profile for a randomly colored random bipartite graph.
Given $m$ points and $n$ hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, if there are many incidences, we expect to find a big cluster $K_{r,s}$ in their incidence graph. Apfelbaum and Sharir found lower and upper bounds for the largest size of $rs$, which only match in three dimensions. In this paper we close the gap in four and five dimensions, up to some logarithmic factors.
For a bipartite graph $G$ with parts $X$ and $Y$, an $X$-interval coloring is a proper edge coloring of $G$ by integers such that the colors on the edges incident to any vertex in $X$ form an interval. Denote by $χ'_{int}(G,X)$ the minimum $k$ such that $G$ has an $X$-interval coloring with $k$ colors. The author and Toft conjectured [Discrete Mathematics 339 (2016), 2628--2639] that there is a polynomial $P(x)$ such that if $G$ has maximum degree at most $Δ$, then $χ'_{int}(G,X) \leq P(Δ)$. In this short note, we prove this conjecture; in fact, we prove that a cubic polynomial suffices. We al…
Let $γ(G)$ and $i(G)$ be the domination number and the independent domination number of $G$, respectively. Rad and Volkmann posted a conjecture that $i(G)/ γ(G) \leq Δ(G)/2$ for any graph $G$, where $Δ(G)$ is its maximum degree (See \cite{5}: N.J. Rad, L. Volkmann, A note on the independent domination number in graphs. Discrete Appl. Math. 161(2013) 3087--3089). In this work, we verify the conjecture for bipartite graphs. Several graph classes attaining the extremal bound and graphs containing odd cycles with the ratio larger than $Δ(G)/2$ are provided as well.
In this paper, we deal with the signed bad number and the negative decision number of graphs. We show that two upper bounds concerning these two parameters for bipartite graphs in papers [Discrete Math. Algorithms Appl. 1 (2011), 33--41] and [Australas. J. Combin. 41 (2008), 263--272] are not true as they stand. We correct them by presenting more general bounds for triangle-free graphs by using the classic theorem of Mantel from the extremal graph theory and characterize all triangle-free graphs attaining these bounds.
A subset $D$ of the vertex set $V$ of a graph $G$ is called an $[1,k]$-dominating set if every vertex from $V-D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex and at most $k$ vertices of $D$. A $[1,k]$-dominating set with the minimum number of vertices is called a $γ_{[1,k]}$-set and the number of its vertices is the $[1,k]$-domination number $γ_{[1,k]}(G)$ of $G$. In this short note we show that the decision problem whether $γ_{[1,k]}(G)=n$ is an $NP$-hard problem, even for bipartite graphs. Also, a simple construction of a bipartite graph $G$ of order $n$ satisfying $γ_{[1,k]}(G)=n$ is given for every …
A bi-hole of size $t$ in a bipartite graph $G$ is a copy of $K_{t,t}$ in the bipartite complement of $G$. Given an $n \times n$ bipartite graph $G$, let $β(G)$ be the largest $k$ for which $G$ has a bi-hole of size $k$. We prove that \[ β(G) \geq \left \lfloor \frac{1}{2} \cdot \sum_{v \in V(G)} \frac{1}{d(v)+1} \right \rfloor. \] Furthermore, we prove the following generalization of the result above. Given an $n \times n$ bipartite graph $G$, Let $β_d(G)$ be the largest $k$ for which $G$ has a $k \times k$ $d$-degenerate subgraph. We prove that \[ β_d(G) \geq \left \lfloor \frac{1}{2} \cdot \…
Let $α_{1} (G)$ denote the maximum size of an edge set that contains at most one edge from each triangle of $G$. Let $τ_{B} (G)$ denote the minimum size of an edge set whose deletion makes $G$ bipartite. It was conjectured by Lehel and independently by Puleo that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le n^2/4$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$. Puleo showed that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le 5n^2/16$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$. In this note, we improve the bound by showing that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le 4403n^2/15000$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$.
This note relies heavily on arXiv:1404.6509 and arXiv:1410.7693. Both articles discuss domino tilings of three-dimensional regions, and both are concerned with flips, the local move performed by removing two parallel dominoes and placing them back in the only other possible position. In the second article, an integer $\operatorname{Tw}(t)$ is defined for any tiling $t$ of a large class of regions $\mathcal{R}$: it turns out that $\operatorname{Tw}(t)$ is invariant by flips. In the first article, a more complicated polynomial invariant $P_t(q)$ is introduced for tilings of two-story regions. It…
The main result of this paper is that the polytope of the bipartite TSP is significantly different from that of the general TSP. Comb inequalities are known as facet defining ones in the general case. In the bipartite case, however, many of them are satisfied whenever all degree and subtour elimination constraints are satisfied, {\em i.e.}\ these comb inequalities are not facet defining. The inequalities in question belong to the cases where vertices of one of the two classes occur in less than the half of the intersections of the teeth and the hand. Such side conditions are necessary, as simp…
In \emph{$k$-bootstrap percolation}, we fix $p\in (0,1)$, an integer $k$, and a plane graph $G$. Initially, we infect each face of $G$ independently with probability $p$. Infected faces remain infected forever, and if a healthy (uninfected) face has at least $k$ infected neighbors, then it becomes infected. For fixed $G$ and $p$, the \emph{percolation threshold} is the largest $k$ such that eventually all faces become infected, with probability at least $1/2$. For a large class of infinite graphs, we show that this threshold is independent of $p$. We consider bootstrap percolation in tilings o…
Loh, Tait, Timmons and Zhou introduced the notion of induced Turán numbers, defining $\operatorname{ex}(n, \{H, F\text{-ind}\})$ to be the greatest number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph with no copy of $H$ and no induced copy of $F$. Their and subsequent work has focussed on $F$ being a complete bipartite graph. In this short note, we complement this focus by asymptotically determining the induced Turán number whenever $H$ is not bipartite and $F$ is not an independent set nor a complete bipartite graph.
The inverse Kasteleyn matrix of a bipartite graph holds much information about the perfect matchings of the system such as local statistics which can be used to compute local and global asymptotics. In this paper, we consider three different weightings of domino tilings of the Aztec diamond and show using recurrence relations, we can compute the inverse Kasteleyn matrix. These weights are the one-periodic weighting where the horizontal edges have one weight and the vertical edges have another weight, the q^{vol} weighting which corresponds to multiplying the product of tile weights by q if we …
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring recently introduced by Dvořák and Postle. Several known bounds for the list chromatic number of a graph $G$, $χ_\ell(G)$, also hold for the DP-chromatic number of $G$, $χ_{DP}(G)$. On the other hand, there are several properties of the DP-chromatic number that shows that it differs with the list chromatic number. In this note we show one such property. It is well known that $χ_\ell (K_{k,t}) = k+1$ if and only if $t \geq k^k$. We show that $χ_{DP} (K_{k,t}) = k+1$ if $t \geq 1 + (k^k/k!)(\log(k!)+1)$, and we…
In 2003 Kostochka, Pelsmajer, and West introduced a list analogue of equitable coloring called equitable choosability. A $k$-assignment, $L$, for a graph $G$ assigns a list, $L(v)$, of $k$ available colors to each $v \in V(G)$, and an equitable $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring, $f$, of $G$ such that $f(v) \in L(v)$ for each $v \in V(G)$ and each color class of $f$ has size at most $\lceil |V(G)|/k \rceil$. Graph $G$ is said to be equitably $k$-choosable if an equitable $L$-coloring of $G$ exists whenever $L$ is a $k$-assignment for $G$. In this note we study the equitable choosability …
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a set $S\subseteq V(G)$ of size at least $2$, a path in $G$ is said to be an $S$-path if it connects all vertices of $S$. Two $S$-paths $P_1$ and $P_2$ are said to be internally disjoint if $E(P_1)\cap E(P_2)=\emptyset$ and $V(P_1)\cap V(P_2)=S$. Let $π_G (S)$ denote the maximum number of internally disjoint $S$-paths in $G$. The $k$-path-connectivity $π_k(G)$ of $G$ is then defined as the minimum $π_G (S)$, where $S$ ranges over all $k$-subsets of $V(G)$. In [M. Hager, Path-connectivity in graphs, Discrete Math. 59(1986), 53--59], the $k$-path-connectivity of the com…
A recent paper of Balogh, Li and Treglown initiated the study of Dirac-type problems for ordered graphs. In this paper we prove a number of results in this area. In particular, we determine asymptotically the minimum degree threshold for forcing (i) a perfect $H$-tiling in an ordered graph, for any fixed ordered graph $H$ of interval chromatic number at least $3$; (ii) an $H$-tiling in an ordered graph $G$ covering a fixed proportion of the vertices of $G$ (for any fixed ordered graph $H$); (iii) an $H$-cover in an ordered graph (for any fixed ordered graph $H$). The first two of these results…
Let $G = (X, Y; E)$ be a bipartite graph with two vertex partition subsets $X$ and $Y$. $G$ is said to be balanced if $|X| = |Y|$. $G$ is said to be bipancyclic if it contains cycles of every even length from $4$ to $|V(G)|$. In this note, we present spectral conditions for the bipancyclic bipartite graphs.
A graph is {\em near-bipartite} if its vertex set can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a forest. It is clear that near-bipartite graphs are $3$-colorable. In this note, we show that planar graphs without cycles of lengths in $\{4, 6, 8\}$ are near-bipartite.
A subset $D\subseteq V(G)$ is called a $k$-distance dominating set of $G$ if every vertex in $V(G)\setminus D$ is within distance $k$ from some vertex of $D$. The minimum cardinality among all $k$-distance dominating sets of $G$ is called the $k$-distance domination number of $G$. In this note we give upper bound on the $k$-distance domination number of a connected bipartite graph and improve some results have been given like Theorem 2.1 and 2,7 in [Tian and Xu, A note on distance domination of graphs, Australian Journal of Combinatorics, 43 (2009), 181-190].
We derive a formula for the generating function of d-irreducible bipartite planar maps with several boundaries, i.e. having several marked faces of controlled degrees. It extends a formula due to Collet and Fusy for the case of arbitrary (non necessarily irreducible) bipartite planar maps, which we recover by taking d=0. As an application, we obtain an expression for the number of d-irreducible bipartite planar maps with a prescribed number of faces of each allowed degree. Very explicit expressions are given in the case of maps without multiple edges (d=2), 4-irreducible maps and maps of girth…
In this note, we answer the following question of Foucaud, Krivelevich and Perarnau. What is the size of the largest $K_{r,s}$-free subgraph one can guarantee in every graph $G$ with $m$ edges? We also discuss the analogous problem for hypergraphs.
We consider the dimer problem on a non-bipartite graph $G$, where there are two types of dimers one of which we regard impurities. Results of simulations using Markov chain seem to indicate that impurities are tend to distribute on the boundary, which we set as a conjecture. We first show that there is a bijection between the set of dimer coverings on $G$ and the set of spanning forests on two graphs which are made from $G$, with configuration of impurities satisfying a pairing condition. This bijection can be regarded as a extension of the Temperley bijection. We consider local move consistin…
A $Γ$-distance magic labeling of a graph $G=(V,E)$ with $|V | = n$ is a bijection $\ell$ from $V$ to an Abelian group $Γ$ of order $n$ such that the weight $w(x)=\sum_{y\in N_G(x)}\ell(y)$ of every vertex $x \in V$ is equal to the same element $μ\in Γ$, called the \emph{magic constant}. A graph $G$ is called a \emph{group distance magic graph} if there exists a $Γ$-distance magic labeling for every Abelian group $Γ$ of order $|V(G)|$. In this paper we prove that some complete $k$-partite graphs are $\mathbb{Z}_p$-distance magic. Moreover we prove that $K_{m,n}$ is a group distance magic if and…
Kang and Park recently showed that every cubic (loopless) multigraph is incidence 6-choosable [On incidence choosability of cubic graphs. \emph{arXiv}, April 2018]. Equivalently, every bipartite graph obtained by subdividing once every edge of a cubic graph, is strongly 6-edge-choosable. The aim of this note is to give a shorter proof of their result by looking at the strong edge-coloring formulation of the problem.
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and its adjacency matrix $\mathbb A$. If $G$ has a unique perfect matching, then $\mathbb A$ has an inverse $\mathbb A^{-1}$ which is a symmetric integral matrix, and hence the adjacency matrix of a multigraph. The inverses of bipartite graphs with unique perfect matchings have a strong connection to Möbius functions of posets. In this note, we characterize all bipartite graphs with a unique perfect matching whose adjacency matrices have inverses diagonally similar to non-negative matrices, which settles an open problem of Godsil on inverses of bipartite graphs in …
We investigate the following generalisation of the 'multiplication table problem' of Erdős: given a bipartite graph with $m$ edges, how large is the set of sizes of its induced subgraphs? Erdős's problem of estimating the number of distinct products $ab$ with $a,b \le n$ is precisely the problem under consideration when the graph in question is the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$. In this note, we prove that the set of sizes of the induced subgraphs of any bipartite graph with $m$ edges contains $Ω(m/(\log m)^{12})$ distinct elements.
The bipartite Ramsey number $b(s,t)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every blue-red edge coloring of $K_{n,n}$ contains either a blue $K_{s,s}$ or a red $K_{t,t}$. In the bipartite $K_{2,2}$-free process, we begin with an empty graph on vertex set $X\cup Y$, $|X|=|Y|=n$. At each step, a random edge from $X\times Y$ is added under the restriction that no $K_{2,2}$ is formed. This step is repeated until no more edges can be added. In this note, we analyze this process and show that the resulting graph witnesses that $b(2,t) =Ω\left(t^{3/2}/\log t \right)$, thereby improving the best known …
A path of a graph $G$ is called a Hamilton path if it passes through all the vertices of $G$. A graph is Hamilton-connected if any two vertices are connected by a Hamilton path. Note that any bipartite graph is not Hamilton-connected. We consider the weak version of Hamilton-connected property among bipartite graphs. A weakly Hamilton-connected graph is a balanced bipartite graph $G=(X,Y,E)$ that there is a Hamilton path between any vertex $x\in X$ and $y\in Y$. In this paper, we present some degrees, number of edges, and spectral radius conditions for a simple balanced bipartite graph to be w…
