We present the first complete optimization of quantum tomography, for states, POVMs, and various classes of transformations, for arbitrary prior ensemble and arbitrary representation, giving corresponding feasible experimental schemes.
Quantum tomography is a process of quantum state reconstruction using data from multiple measurements. An essential goal for a quantum tomography algorithm is to find measurements that will maximize the useful information about an unknown quantum state obtained through measurements. One of the recently proposed methods of quantum tomography is the algorithm based on rank-preserving transformations. The main idea is to transform a basic measurement set in a way to provide a situation that is equivalent to measuring the maximally mixed state. As long as tomography of a fully mixed state has the …
In this work we present an algorithm of building an adequate model of polarizing quantum state measurement. This model takes into account chromatic aberration of the basis change transformation caused by the parasitic dispersion of the wave plates crystal and finite radiation spectral bandwidth. We show that the chromatic aberration reduces the amount of information in the measurements results. Using the information matrix approach we estimate the impact of this effect on the qubit state reconstruction fidelity for different values of sample size and spectral bandwidth. We also demonstrate tha…
Extracting information from quantum devices has long been a crucial problem in the field of quantum mechanics. By performing elaborate measurements, quantum state tomography, an important and fundamental tool in quantum science and technology, can be used to determine unknown quantum states completely. In this study, we explore methods to determine multi-qubit pure quantum states uniquely and directly. Two adaptive protocols are proposed, with their respective quantum circuits. Herein, two or three observables are sufficient, while the number of measurement outcomes is either the same as or fe…
We use astigmatic transformations to characterize two-dimensional superpositions of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) states in laser beams. We propose two methods for doing this, both relying only on astigmatic transformations, viewed as rotations on the Poincaré sphere, followed by imaging. These methods can be used as a tomographic tool for communication protocols based on optical vortices.
In this paper, we study how a displacement of a quantum system appears under a change of relativistic reference frame. We introduce a generic method in which a displacement operator in one reference frame can be transformed into another reference frame. It is found that, when moving between non-inertial reference frames there can be distortions of phase information, modal structure and amplitude. We analyse how these effects affect traditional homodyne detection techniques. We then develop an in principle homodyne detection scheme which is robust to these effect, called the ideal homodyne dete…
Quantum detector tomography is a fundamental technique for calibrating quantum devices and performing quantum engineering tasks. In this paper, we design optimal probe states for detector estimation based on the minimum upper bound of the mean squared error (UMSE) and the maximum robustness. We establish the minimum UMSE and the minimum condition number for quantum detectors and provide concrete examples that can achieve optimal detector tomography. In order to enhance the estimation precision, we also propose a two-step adaptive detector tomography algorithm to optimize the probe states adapt…
A central task in quantum information processing is to characterize quantum processes. In the realm of optical quantum information processing, this amounts to characterizing the transformations of the mode creation and annihilation operators. This transformation is unitary for linear optical systems, whereas these yield the well-known Bogoliubov transformations for systems with Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the mode operators. In this paper, we show that a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer can characterize both these kinds of evolutions for multimode systems. While it suffices to use c…
The spin-coherent-state positive-operator-valued-measure (POVM) is a fundamental measurement in quantum science, with applications including tomography, metrology, teleportation, benchmarking, and measurement of Husimi phase space probabilities. We prove that this POVM is achieved by collectively measuring the spin projection of an ensemble of qubits weakly and isotropically. We apply this in the context of optimal tomography of pure qubits. We show numerically that through a sequence of weak measurements of random directions of the collective spin component, sampled discretely or in a continu…
Debugging quantum states transformations is an important task of modern quantum computing. The use of quantum tomography for these purposes significantly expands the range of possibilities. However, the presence of preparation and measurement errors complicates the practical use of this procedure. In this work, we investigate the possibility of estimating these errors from experiment. These estimates are subsequently used to build a robust quantum tomography model. The model allows one to accurately reconstruct unitary errors of single-qubit gates. We show that, having such imperfect single-qu…

Quantum tomography is an essential method of the photonic technology toolbox and is routinely used for evaluation of experimentally prepared states of light and characterization of devices transforming such states. The tomography procedure consists of many different sequentially performed measurements. We present considerable tomography speedup by optimally arranging the individual constituent measurements, which is equivalent to solving an instance of the traveling salesman problem. As an example, we obtain solutions for photonic systems of up to five qubits, and conclude that already for sys…
Quantum process tomography --- a primitive in many quantum information processing tasks --- can be cast within the framework of the theory of design of experiment (DoE), a branch of classical statistics that deals with the relationship between inputs and outputs of an experimental setup. Such a link potentially gives access to the many ideas of the rich subject of classical DoE for use in quantum problems. The classical techniques from DoE cannot, however, be directly applied to the quantum process tomography due to the basic structural differences between the classical and quantum estimation …

The quantum measurement procedure based on the Lorentz transformation formalism and weak perturbation of the system is considered. In the simple case of a single-qubit it turns out that one can perform 4-dimension pseudo-rotation along with ordinary 3-dimension rotations on the Bloch sphere. These pseudo-rotations are similar to the Lorentz transformation in special relativity theory. The extension of the Lorentz transformation for many-qubit systems is also considered. The quantum measurement protocols based on the Lorentz transformation are proposed. It has been shown that these protocols ce…
Quantum tomography is an important tool for obtaining information about the quantum state from experimental data. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of various quantum tomography protocols, including protocols based on highly symmetric sets of state vectors, on mutually unbiased bases (MUB), and two-level transformations. Using the universal distribution for the fidelity of quantum state tomography, we estimate the fidelity and efficiency of quantum measurements for qudits of various dimensions as applied to a set of random states uniformly distributed over the Haar measure.
In an earlier publication we had given an exhaustive analysis of the criteria for weak value measurements of pure states to be optimal in the sense considered by Wootters and Fields. We had proved, for arbitrary spin cases, that the measurements are optimal when the post-selected state is mutually unbiased wrt the eigenstates of the observable being measured. Here we extend the discussion to mixed states. For these, weak value measurements have several problems which we illustrate with the protocol proposed by Shengjun Wu. We discuss tomography of mixed states based on weak measurements and sho…
A minimal set of measurement operators for quantum state tomography has in the non-degenerate case ideally eigenbases which are mutually unbiased. This is different for the degenerate case. Here, we consider the situation where the measurement operators are projections on individual pure quantum states. This corresponds to maximal degeneracy. We present numerically optimized sets of projectors and find that they significantly outperform those which are taken from a set of mutually unbiased bases.

We investigate the performance of a Kennedy receiver, which is known as a beneficial tool in optical coherent communications, to the quantum state discrimination of the two superpositions of vacuum and single photon states corresponding to the $\hatσ_x$ eigenstates in the single-rail encoding of photonic qubits. We experimentally characterize the Kennedy receiver in vacuum-single photon two-dimensional space using quantum detector tomography and evaluate the achievable discrimination error probability from the reconstructed measurement operators. We furthermore derive the minimum error rate ob…
