Quantum tomography is an important tool for obtaining information about the quantum state from experimental data. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of various quantum tomography protocols, including protocols based on highly symmetric sets of state vectors, on mutually unbiased bases (MUB), and two-level transformations. Using the universal distribution for the fidelity of quantum state tomography, we estimate the fidelity and efficiency of quantum measurements for qudits of various dimensions as applied to a set of random states uniformly distributed over the Haar measure.
Quantum state tomography (QST) is an essential tool for characterizing an unknown quantum state. Recently, QST has been performed for entangled qudits based on orbital angular momentum, time-energy uncertainty, and frequency bins. Here, we propose a QST for time-bin qudits, with which the number of measurement settings scales linearly with dimension $d$. Using the proposed scheme, we performed QST for a four-dimensional time-bin maximally entangled state with 16 measurement settings. We successfully reconstructed the density matrix of the entangled qudits, with which the average fidelity of th…
We consider the task of performing quantum state tomography on a $d$-level spin qudit, using only measurements of spin projection onto different quantization axes. After introducing a basis of operators closely related to the spherical harmonics, which obey the rotational symmetries of spin qudits, we map our quantum tomography task onto the classical problem of signal recovery on the sphere. We then provide algorithms with $O(rd^3)$ serial runtime, parallelizable down to $O(rd^2)$, for (i) computing a priori upper bounds on the expected error with which spin projection measurements along $r$ …
Quantum tomography makes it possible to obtain comprehensive information about certain logical elements of a quantum computer. In this regard, it is a promising tool for debugging quantum computers. The practical application of tomography, however, is still limited by systematic measurement errors. Their main source are errors in the quantum state preparation and measurement procedures. In this work, we investigate the possibility of suppressing these errors in the case of ion-based qudits. First, we will show that one can construct a quantum measurement protocol that contains no more than a s…
Manipulation of qudits in optical tables is a difficult and nonscalable task. The use of integrated optical circuits opens new possibilities for the generation, manipulation, and characterization of high dimensional states besides the ease of transmission of these states through an optical fiber. In this work we propose photonic circuits to perform minimum quantum state tomography of path qudits and show how to determine all the constituents parameters of these circuits (beam splitters and phase shifters). Our strategies were based on the symmetries of the involved POVMs (positive operator-val…
Recently quantum tomography has been proposed as a fundamental tool for prototyping a few qubit quantum device. It allows the complete reconstruction of the state produced from a given input into the device. From this reconstructed density matrix, relevant quantum information quantities such as the degree of entanglement and entropy can be calculated. Generally orthogonal measurements have been discussed for this tomographic reconstruction. In this paper, we extend the tomographic reconstruction technique to two new regimes. First we show how non-orthogonal measurement allow the reconstruction…
In this paper, we discuss the minimal number of observables, where expectation values at some time instant determine the trajectory of a d-level quantum system ("qudit") governed by the Gaussian semigroup. We assume that the macroscopic information about the system in question is given by the mean values of n selfadjoint operators $Q_1,...,Q_n$ at some time instants $t_1<t_2<...<t_r$, where $n<d^2-1$ and $r\leq {\rm deg} μ(λ,\bBBL)$. Here $μ(λ,\bBBL)$ stands for the minimal polynomial of the generator of the Gaussian flow.
We present the experimental quantum tomography of 7- and 8-dimensional quantum systems based on projective measurements in the mutually unbiased basis (MUB-QT). One of the advantages of MUB-QT is that it requires projections from a minimal number of bases to be performed. In our scheme, the higher dimensional quantum systems are encoded using the propagation modes of single photons, and we take advantage of the capabilities of amplitude- and phase-modulation of programmable spatial light modulators to implement the MUB-QT.
We propose a method to perform the quantum state tomography (QST) of an $\mathit{n}$-partite qudit state embedded in single photons using the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between the target state and probe state. This method requires only passive beam splitters for the HOM interference and removes all active optical devices in the target modes to control the measurement bases needed in conventional QST. Hence, it is applicable to various degree of freedom of the target state without altering the measurement setup. Moreover, a faithful estimation is realized even with classical probe light…
In this work, we propose three-dimensional photonic circuit designs that guarantee a considerable reduction in the complexity of circuits for the purpose of performing quantum state tomography of N-dimensional path qudits. The POVM (Positive Operator-Valued Measure) chosen in this work ensures that, for odd dimensions, such process is minimal. Our proposal consists of organizing the waveguides that form the circuit as a square array formed by N vertical sectors composed of N waveguides each, arranged in the vertical direction. Based on the symmetry of the chosen POVM, the interferometer acting…
We show that a generic $N$-qudit pure quantum state is uniquely determined by only $2$ of its $\lceil\frac{N+1}{2}\rceil$-particle reduced density matrices. Therefore we give a method to uniquely determine a generic $N$-qudit pure state of dimension $D=d^N$ with $O(D)$ local measurements, which is an improvement comparing with the previous known approach using $O(D\log^2 D)$ or $O(D\log D)$ measurements.
Neutral atom systems are an appealing platform for the development and testing of quantum control and measurement techniques. This dissertation presents experimental investigations of control and measurement tools using as a testbed the 16-dimensional hyperfine manifold associated with the electronic ground state of $^{133}$Cs atoms. On the control side, we present an experimental realization of a protocol to implement robust unitary transformations in the presence of static and dynamic perturbations. We also present an experimental realization of inhomogeneous quantum control. Specifically, w…
Multi-qudit systems are studied in tomographic probability representations of quantum qudit states. Results of calculations for Bell-type numbers within the framework of classical probability theory and in quantum tomography are compared. Violation of Bell-type inequalities are shown explicitly using the method of averaging in tomographic picture of quantum states.
We present a comprehensive framework for quantum state tomography (QST) of time-bin qudits sent through a fiber. Starting from basic assumptions, we define a positive-operator valued measure (POVM) which is then applied to the quantum state reconstruction problem. A realistic scenario is considered where the time uncertainty of the detector is treated as a source of experimental noise. The performance of the quantum tomography framework is examined through a series of numerical simulations conducted for different parameters describing the apparatus. The quality of state recovery, quantified by…
The techniques of low-rank matrix recovery were adapted for Quantum State Tomography (QST) previously by D. Gross et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 150401 (2010)], where they consider the tomography of $n$ spin-$1/2$ systems. For the density matrix of dimension $d = 2^n$ and rank $r$ with $r \ll 2^n$, it was shown that randomly chosen Pauli measurements of the order $O(dr \log(d)^2)$ are enough to fully reconstruct the density matrix by running a specific convex optimization algorithm. The result utilized the low operator-norm of the Pauli operator basis, which makes it `incoherent' to low-rank ma…
It has previously been shown that quantum state tomography can be used to increase the key rate of quantum key distribution (QKD) for the special case of qubits (i.e.,d=2). Here, we consider the case of higher dimensions, i.e., qudits, and show that, for a prime number d>2, quantum state tomography can also improve the key rate of d-dimensional qudit-based QKD schemes, compared to the standard (d+1)-basis protocol. We apply our results to previous QKD experiments based on OAM (orbital angular momentum) encoding and demonstrate the advantage of tomography-based QKD protocols. Moreover, we compa…
Photons carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are excellent qudits and are widely used in several applications, such as long distance quantum communication, $d$-dimensional teleportation and high-resolution imaging and metrology. All these protocols rely on quantum tomography to characterise the OAM state, which currently requires complex measurements involving spatial light modulators and mode filters. To simplify the measurement and characterisation of OAM states, here we apply a recent tomography protocol [Asadian et al., \pra {\bf 94}, 010301 (2016)]. Our scheme for OAM tomography in $d$…
Using the the convex semidefinite programming method and superoperator formalism we obtain the finite quantum tomography of some mixed quantum states such as: qudit tomography, N-qubit tomography, phase tomography and coherent spin state tomography, where that obtained results are in agreement with those of References \cite{schack,Pegg,Barnett,Buzek,Weigert}.
The exponential growth in Hilbert space with increasing size of a quantum system means that accurately characterising the system becomes significantly harder with system dimension d. We show that self-guided tomography is a practical, efficient, and robust technique of measuring higher-dimensional quantum states. The achieved fidelities are over 99.9% for qutrits (d=3) and ququints (d=5), and 99.1% for quvigints (d=20), the highest values ever realised for qudits. We demonstrate robustness against experimental sources of noise, both statistical and environmental. The technique is applicable to…
Spatial qudit states can be realized by using multi-slits to discretize the transverse momentum of a photon. The merit of this kind of spatial qudit states is that the implementation of higher dimensional qudits is relatively easy. As we have recently shown, the quantum states of these spatial qudits can be analyzed by scanning a single interference pattern. This method of single scan tomography can also be applied at higher dimensions, but the reconstruction becomes more sensitive to smaller details of the scanned patterns as the dimensions increase. In this paper, we investigate the effect o…

Quantum entanglement between qudits - the d-dimensional version of qubits - is relevant for advanced quantum information processing and provides deeper insights in the nature of quantum correlations. Encoding qudits in the frequency modes of photon pairs produced by continuous parametric down-conversion enables access to high-dimensional states. By shaping the energy spectrum of entangled photons, we demonstrate the creation, characterization and manipulation of entangled qudits with dimension up to 4. Their respective density matrices are reconstructed by quantum state tomography. For qubits …
We propose and demonstrate a method for quantum-state tomography of qudits encoded in the quantum polarization of $N$-photon states. This is achieved by distributing $N$ photons nondeterministically into three paths and their subsequent projection, which for $N=1$ is equivalent to measuring the Stokes (or Pauli) operators. The statistics of the recorded $N$-fold coincidences determines the unknown $N$-photon polarization state uniquely. The proposed, fixed setup manifestly rules out any systematic measurement errors due to moving components and allows for simple switching between tomography of…
We present a formalism for self-calibrating tomography of arbitrary dimensional systems. Self-calibrating quantum state tomography was first introduced in the context of qubits, and allows the reconstruction of the density matrix of an unknown quantum state despite incomplete knowledge of the unitary operations used to change the measurement basis. We show how this can be generalized to qudits, i.e. d-level systems, and provide a specific example for a V-type three-level atomic system whose transition dipole moments are not known. We show that it is always possible to retrieve the unknown stat…
Fiber transport of multi-dimensional photonic qudits promises high information capacity per photon without space restriction. This work experimentally demonstrates transmission of spatial qudits through multi-core optical fibers and measurement of the entanglement between two fibers with quantum state analyzers, each composed of a spatial light modulator and a single-mode fiber. Quantum state tomography reconstructs the four-dimension entangled state that verifies the non-locality through concurrences in two-dimensional subspaces and a high-dimensional Bell-type CGLMP inequality.
We propose a quantum tomography scheme for pure qudit systems which adopts random base measurements and generative learning methods, along with a built-in fidelity estimation approach to assess the reliability of the tomographic states. We prove the validity of the scheme theoretically, and we perform numerically simulated experiments on several target states including three typical quantum information states and randomly initiated states, demonstrating its efficiency and robustness. The number of replicas required by a certain convergence criterion grows in the manner of low-degree polynomial…
We present a proof-of-principle demonstration of a method to characterize \textit{any} pure spatial qudit of arbitrary dimension $d$, which is based on the classic phase shift interferometry technique. In the proposed scheme a total of only $4 d$ measurement outcomes are needed, implying a significant reduction with respect to the standard schemes for quantum state tomography which require of the order of $d^2$. By using this technique, we have experimentally reconstructed a large number of states ranging from $d=2$ up to $14$ with mean fidelity values higher than $0.97$. For that purpose the …
In this work we propose a simple optical architecture, based on phase-only programmable spatial light modulators, in order to characterize general processes on photonic spatial quantum systems in a $d>2$ Hilbert space. We demonstrate the full reconstruction of typical noises affecting quantum computing, as amplitude shifts, phase shifts, and depolarizing channel in dimension $d=5$. We have also reconstructed simulated atmospheric turbulences affecting a free-space transmission of qudits in dimension $d=4$. In each case, quantum process tomography (QPT) was performed in order to obtain the matr…
We propose an experimental scheme to generate, in a heralded fashion, arbitrary quantum superpositions of two-mode optical states with a fixed total photon number $n$ based on weakly squeezed two-mode squeezed state resources (obtained via weak parametric down conversion), linear optics, and photon detection. Arbitrary $d$-level (qudit) states can be created this way where $d=n+1$. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate our scheme for $n=2$. The resulting qutrit states are characterized via optical homodyne tomography. We also discuss possible extensions to more than two modes concluding t…
Conventional Glauber coherent states (CS) can be defined in several equivalent ways, e.g., by displacing the vacuum or, explicitly, by their infinite Poissonian expansion in Fock states. It is well known that these definitions become inequivalent if applied to finite $d$-level systems (qudits). We present a comparative Wigner-function description of the qudit CS defined (i) by the action of the truncated displacement operator on the vacuum and (ii) by the Poissonian expansion in Fock states of the Glauber CS truncated at $(d-1)$-photon Fock state. These states can be generated from a classical…
Generation of entangled state is of paramount importance both from quantum theoretical foundation and technology applications. Entanglement swapping provides an efficient method to generate entanglement in quantum communication protocols. However, perfect Bell measurements for qudits, the key to entanglement swapping, have been proven impossible to achieve by using only linear elements and particle detectors. To avoid this bottleneck, we propose a novel scheme to generate entangled state including two-qubit entangled state, two-qudit entangled state, three-qubit GHZ state and three-qudit GHZ s…
Mutually unbiased bases, mutually unbiased measurements and general symmetric informationally complete measurements are three related concepts in quantum information theory. We investigate multipartite systems using these notions and present some criteria detecting entanglement of arbitrary high dimensional multi-qudit systems and multipartite systems of subsystems with different dimensions. It is proved that these criteria can detect the $k$-nonseparability ($k$ is even) of multipartite qudit systems and arbitrary high dimensional multipartite systems of $m$ subsystems with different dimensio…
A `register' in quantum information processing -- is composition of k quantum systems, `qudits'. The dimensions of Hilbert spaces for one qudit and whole quantum register are d and d^k respectively, but we should have possibility to prepare arbitrary entangled state of these k systems. Preparation and arbitrary transformations of states are possible with universal set of quantum gates and for any d may be suggested such gates acting only on single systems and neighbouring pairs. Here are revisited methods of construction of Hamiltonians for such universal set of gates and as a concrete new exa…
Efficiency Enhancement up to Unity in a Generalized Quantum Otto Engine: Comparative Analysis with Conventional Quantum Otto Engine Utilizing a Two-Qubit Heisenberg XXZ Chain
We present an error analysis of various tomographic protocols based on the linear inversion for the reconstruction of an unknown two-qubit state. We solve the problem of finding a tomographic protocol which is the most robust against errors in terms of the lowest value (i.e., equal to 1) of a condition number, as required by the Gastinel-Kahan theorem. In contrast, standard tomographic protocols, including those based on mutually unbiased bases, are nonoptimal for determining all 16 elements of an unknown two-qubit density matrix. Our method is based on the measurements of the 16 generalized P…
We provide an adaptive learning algorithm for tomography of general quantum states. Our proposal is based on the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation algorithm and is applicable on mixed qudit states. The salient features of our algorithm are efficient ($O \left( d^3 \right)$) post-processing in the dimension $d$ of the state, robustness against measurement and channel noise, and improved infidelity performance as compared to the contemporary adaptive state learning algorithms. A higher resilience against measurement noise makes our algorithm suitable for noisy intermediate-scale…
In high dimensional quantum communication networks, quantum frequency convertor (QFC) is indispensable as an interface in the frequency domain. For example, many QFCs have been built to link atomic memories and fiber channels. However, almost all of QFCs work in a two-dimensional space. It is still a pivotal challenge to construct a high-quality QFC for some complex quantum states, e.g., a high dimensional single-photon state that refers to a qudit. Here, we firstly propose a high-dimensional QFC for an orbital angular momentum qudit via sum frequency conversion with a flat top beam pump. As a…
We present in a unified manner the existing methods for scalable partial quantum process tomography. We focus on two main approaches: the one presented in Bendersky et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 190403 (2008)], and the ones described, respectively, in Emerson et al. [Science 317, 1893 (2007)] and López et al. [Phys. Rev. A 79, 042328 (2009)], which can be combined together. The methods share an essential feature: They are based on the idea that the tomography of a quantum map can be efficiently performed by studying certain properties of a twirling of such a map. From this perspective, in this…
We present an experimental study of the non-classical correlations of a pair of spatial qubits formed by passing two down-converted photons through a pair of double slits. After confirming the entanglement generated in our setup by quantum tomography using separate measurements of the slit images and the interference patterns, we show that the complete Hilbert space of the spatial qubits can be accessed by measurements performed in a single plane between the image plane and the focal plane of a lens. Specifically, it is possible to obtain both the which-path and the interference information ne…
As quantum tomography is becoming a key component of the quantum engineering toolbox, there is a need for a deeper understanding of the multitude of estimation methods available. Here we investigate and compare several such methods: maximum likelihood, least squares, generalised least squares, positive least squares, thresholded least squares and projected least squares. The common thread of the analysis is that each estimator projects the measurement data onto a parameter space with respect to a specific metric, thus allowing us to study the relationships between different estimators. The asy…
Owing in large part to the advent of integrated biphoton frequency combs (BFCs), recent years have witnessed increased attention to quantum information processing in the frequency domain for its inherent high dimensionality and entanglement compatible with fiber-optic networks. Quantum state tomography (QST) of such states, however, has required complex and precise engineering of active frequency mixing operations, which are difficult to scale. To address these limitations, we propose a novel solution that employs a pulse shaper and electro-optic phase modulator (EOM) to perform random operati…
