Today, multiple new platforms are implementing qudits, $d$-level quantum bases of information, for Quantum Information Processing (QIP). It is therefore crucial to study their efficiencies for QIP compared to more traditional qubit platforms. We present a comparative study of the infidelity scalings of a qudit and $n$-qubit systems, both with identical Hilbert space dimensions and noisy environments. The first-order response of the Average Gate Infidelity (AGI) to the noise in the Lindblad formalism, which was found to be gate-independent, was calculated analytically in the two systems being compared. This yielded a critical curve $O(d^2/\log_2(d))$ of the ratio of their respective gate times in units of decoherence time. This quantity indicates how time-efficient operations on these systems are. The curve delineates regions where each system has a higher rate of increase of the AGI than the other. This condition on gate efficiency was applied to different existing platforms. It was found that specific qudit platforms possess gate efficiencies competitive with state-of-the-art qubit platforms. Numerical simulations complemented this work and allowed for discussion of the applicability and limits of the linear response formalism.
We propose a linear-size synthesis of the multi-controlled Toffoli gate on qudits with at most one borrowed ancilla. This one ancilla can even be saved when the qudit dimension is odd. Our synthesis leads to improvements in various quantum algorithms implemented on qudits. In particular, we obtain (i) a linear-size and one-clean-ancilla synthesis of multi-controlled qudit gates; (ii) an optimal-size and one-clean-ancilla synthesis of unitaries on qudits; (iii) a near-optimal-size and ancilla-free/one-borrowed-ancilla implementation of classical reversible functions as qudit gates.
We introduce quantum hybrid gates that act on qudits of different dimensions. In particular, we develop two representative two-qudit hybrid gates (SUM and SWAP) and many-qudit hybrid Toffoli and Fredkin gates. We apply the hybrid SUM gate to generating entanglement, and find that operator entanglement of the SUM gate is equal to the entanglement generated by it for certain initial states. We also show that the hybrid SUM gate acts as an automorphism on the Pauli group for two qudits of different dimension under certain conditions. Finally, we describe a physical realization of these hybrid gat…
We construct the exchange gate with small elementary gates on the space of qudits, which consist of three controlled shift gates and three "reverse" gates. This is a natural extension of the qubit case. We also consider a similar subject on the Fock space, but in this case we meet with some different situation. However we can construct the exchange gate by making use of generalized coherent operator based on the Lie algebra su(2) which is a well--known method in Quantum Optics. We moreover make a brief comment on "imperfect clone".
We present a scalable set of universal gates and multiply controlled gates in a qudit basis through a bijective mapping from N qubits to qudits with D = 2^N levels via rotations in U(2). For each of the universal gates (H, CNOT, and T), as well as the NOT gate and multiply-controlled-Z gates, we describe a systematic approach to identifying the set of U(2) rotations required to implement each gate for any qudit of size N and with minimal use of an ancilla level. The qudit gates are analyzed in terms of the total rotation count and gate depth as the system scales with D. We apply the qudit-basi…
Using a braid group representation based on the Temperley-Lieb algebra, we construct braid quantum gates that could generate entangled $n$-partite $D$-level qudit states. $D$ different sets of $D^n\times D^n$ unitary representation of the braid group generators are presented. With these generators the desired braid quantum gates are obtained. We show that the generalized GHZ states, which are maximally entangled states, can be obtained directly from these braid quantum gates without resorting to further local unitary transformations. We also point out an interesting observation, namely for a g…
In this paper we study universality for quantum gates acting on qudits.Qudits are states in a Hilbert space of dimension d where d is at least two. We determine which 2-qudit gates V have the properties (i) the collection of all 1-qudit gates together with V produces all n-qudit gates up to arbitrary precision, or (ii) the collection of all 1-qudit gates together with V produces all n-qudit gates exactly. We show that (i) and (ii) are equivalent conditions on V, and they hold if and only if V is not a primitive gate. Here we say V is primitive if it transforms any decomposable tensor into a de…
We present a quantum SWAP gate valid for quantum systems of an arbitrary dimension. The gate generalizes the CNOT implementation of the SWAP gate for qubits and keeps its most important properties, like symmetry and simplicity. We only use three copies of the same controlled qudit gate. This gate can be built with two standard higher-dimensional operations, the Quantum Fourier Transform and the d-dimensional version of the CZ gate.
We propose three core ideas: 1. the wave-particle duality of the qudit quantum space; 2. the classification of all elementary quantum gates by ordered pairs of qudit functionals; 3. a new type of quantum gates called the "quantum wave gates". We first study the quantum functionals whose relation to the quantum states is analogous to that between the momentum and position wavefunctions in fundamental quantum physics: a Fourier transform and an entropic uncertainty principle can be defined between the dual representations. The quantum functionals are not just mathematical constructs but have cle…
We discuss the implementation of quantum algorithms for lattice $Φ^4$ theory on circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) system. The field is represented on qudits in a discretized field amplitude basis. The main advantage of qudit systems is that its multi-level characteristic allows the field interaction to be implemented only with diagonal single-qudit gates. Considering the set of universal gates formed by the single-qudit phase gate and the displacement gate, we address initial state preparation and single-qudit gate synthesis with variational methods.

We concretely construct an extension of the controlled-U gate in qudit from some elementary gates. We also construct unitary transformation in two-qudit by means of the extended controlled-U gate and show the universality of it.
The application of high-dimensional quantum systems (qudits) in quantum computing and communications seems to be a promising avenue due to the possibility of increasing the amount of information encoded in one physical carrier. In this work, we propose a method for implementing single-qudit gates for qudits based on light modes with orbital angular momentum. Method for logical qudits encoding, which ensures the quasi-cyclicity of operations, is introduced. Based on the protocol for converting the orbital angular momentum of light in the Raman quantum memory scheme [Vashukevich E.A. et. al. PRA…
We study quantum information processing using superpositions of Fock states in superconducting resonators, as quantum $d$-level systems (qudits). A universal set of single and coupled logic gates is theoretically proposed for resonators coupled by superconducting circuits of Josephson juctions. These gates use experimentally demonstrated interactions, and provide an attractive route to quantum information processing using harmonic oscillator modes.
Robust quantum computation with d-level quantum systems (qudits) poses two requirements: fast, parallel quantum gates and high fidelity two-qudit gates. We first describe how to implement parallel single qudit operations. It is by now well known that any single-qudit unitary can be decomposed into a sequence of Givens rotations on two-dimensional subspaces of the qudit state space. Using a coupling graph to represent physically allowed couplings between pairs of qudit states, we then show that the logical depth of the parallel gate sequence is equal to the height of an associated tree. The imp…
The notion of universal quantum computation can be generalized to multi-level qudits, which offer advantages in resource usage and algorithmic efficiencies. Trapped ions, which are pristine and well-controlled quantum systems, offer an ideal platform to develop qudit-based quantum information processing. Previous work has not fully explored the practicality of implementing trapped-ion qudits accounting for known experimental error sources. Here, we describe a universal set of protocols for state preparation, single-qudit gates, a new generalization of the Mølmer-Sørensen gate for two-qudit gat…
Generalizations of the classic Bell inequality to higher dimensional quantum systems known as qudits are reputed to exhibit a higher degree of robustness to noise, but such claims are based on one particular noise model. We analyze the violation of the Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu inequality subject to more realistic noise sources and their scaling with dimension. This analysis is inspired by potential Bell inequality experiments with superconducting resonator-based qudits. We find that the robustness of the inequality to noise generally decreases with increasing qudit dimension.
Bounds, expressed in terms of d and N, on full Bell locality of a quantum state for $N\geq 3$ nonlocally entangled qudits (of a dimension $d\geq 2$) mixed with white noise are known, to our knowledge, only within full separability of this noisy N-qudit state. For the maximal violation of general Bell inequalities by an N-partite quantum state, we specify the analytical upper bound expressed in terms of dilation characteristics of this state, and this allows us to find new general bounds in $d, N$, valid for all $d\geq 2$ and all $N\geq 3$, on full Bell locality under generalized quantum measur…
The progress in building quantum computers to execute quantum algorithms has recently been remarkable. Grover's search algorithm in a binary quantum system provides considerable speed-up over classical paradigm. Further, Grover's algorithm can be extended to a $d$-ary (qudit) quantum system for utilizing the advantage of larger state space, which helps to reduce the run-time of the algorithm as compared to the traditional binary quantum systems. In a qudit quantum system, an $n$-qudit Toffoli gate plays a significant role in the accurate implementation of Grover's algorithm. In this article, a…
The Clifford hierarchy is a nested sequence of sets of quantum gates critical to achieving fault-tolerant quantum computation. Diagonal gates of the Clifford hierarchy and 'nearly diagonal' semi-Clifford gates are particularly important: they admit efficient gate teleportation protocols that implement these gates with fewer ancillary quantum resources such as magic states. Despite the practical importance of these sets of gates, many questions about their structure remain open; this is especially true in the higher-dimensional qudit setting. Our contribution is to leverage the discrete Stone-v…
We present quantum networks for a n-qubit controlled gate C^{n-1}(U) which use a higher dimensional (qudit) ancilla as a catalyser. In its simplest form the network has only n two-particle gates (qubit-qudit) -- this is the minimum number of two-body interactions needed to couple all n+1 subsystems (n qubits plus one ancilla). This class of controlled gates includes the generalised Toffoli gate C^{n-1}(X) on n qubits, which plays an important role in several quantum algorithms and error correction. A particular example implementing this model is given by the dispersive limit of a generalised J…
We obtain a simple formula for the average gate fidelity of a linear map acting on qudits. It is given in terms of minimal sets of pure state preparations alone, which may be interesting from the experimental point of view. These preparations can be seen as the outcomes of certain minimal positive operator valued measures. The connection of our results with these generalized measurements is briefly discussed.
Qudit is a multi-level computational unit alternative to the conventional 2-level qubit. Compared to qubit, qudit provides a larger state space to store and process information, and thus can provide reduction of the circuit complexity, simplification of the experimental setup and enhancement of the algorithm efficiency. This review provides an overview of qudit-based quantum computing covering a variety of topics ranging from circuit building, algorithm design, to experimental methods. We first discuss the qudit gate universality and a variety of qudit gates including the pi/8 gate, the SWAP g…
This paper concerns the efficient implementation of quantum circuits for qudits. We show that controlled two-qudit gates can be implemented without ancillas and prove that the gate library containing arbitrary local unitaries and one two-qudit gate, CINC, is exact-universal. A recent paper (PRL 94 230502) describes quantum circuits for qudits which require O(d^n) two-qudit gates for state synthesis and O(d^{2n}) two-qudit gates for unitary synthesis, matching the respective lower bound complexities. In this work, we present the state synthesis circuit in much greater detail and prove that it i…
This paper presents a highly efficient decomposition scheme and its associated Mathematica notebook for the analysis of complicated quantum circuits comprised of single/multiple qubit and qudit quantum gates. In particular, this scheme reduces the evaluation of multiple unitary gate operations with many conditionals to just two matrix additions, regardless of the number of conditionals or gate dimensions. This improves significantly the capability of a quantum circuit analyser implemented in a classical computer. This is also the first efficient quantum circuit analyser to include qudit quantu…

Recent research in generalizing quantum computation from 2-valued qudits to d-valued qudits has shown practical advantages for scaling up a quantum computer. A further generalization leads to quantum computing with hybrid qudits where two or more qudits have different finite dimensions. Advantages of hybrid and d-valued gates (circuits) and their physical realizations have been studied in detail by Muthukrishnan and Stroud (Physical Review A, 052309, 2000), Daboul et al. (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 36 2525-2536, 2003), and Bartlett et al (Physical Review A, Vol.65, 052316, 2002). In both cases, a …
The SWAP gate has become an integral feature of quantum circuit architectures and is designed to permute the states of two qubits through the use of the well-known controlled-NOT gate. We consider the question of whether a two-qudit quantum circuit composed entirely from instances of the generalised controlled-NOT gate can be constructed to permute the states of two qudits. Arguing via the signature of a permutation, we demonstrate the impossibility of such circuits for dimensions $d \equiv 3$ (mod 4).
We propose the generalized controlled X (GCX) gate as the two-qudit elementary gate, and based on Cartan decomposition, we also give the one-qudit elementary gates. Then we discuss the physical implementation of these elementary gates and show that it is feasible with current technology. With these elementary gates many important qudit quantum gates can be synthesized conveniently. We provide efficient methods for the synthesis of various kinds of controlled qudit gates and greatly simplify the synthesis of existing generic multi-valued quantum circuits. Moreover, we generalize the quantum Sha…
Qubits, which are quantum counterparts of classical bits, are used as basic information units for quantum information processing, whereas underlying physical information carriers, e.g. (artificial) atoms or ions, admit encoding of more complex multilevel states -- qudits. Recently, significant attention is paid to the idea of using qudit encoding as a way for further scaling quantum processors. In this work, we present an efficient decomposition of the generalized Toffoli gate on the five-level quantum systems, so-called ququints, that uses ququints' space as the space of two qubits with a joi…
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation is a method used to implement high-speed quantum gates with non-Abelian geometric phases associated with paths in state space. Due to their noise tolerance, these phases can be used to construct error resilient quantum gates. We extend the holonomic dark path qubit scheme in [M.-Z. Ai {\t et al.}, Fundam. Res. {\bf 2}, 661 (2022)] to qudits. Specifically, we demonstrate one- and two-qudit universality by using the dark path technique. Explicit qutrit ($d=3$) gates are demonstrated and the scaling of the number of loops with the dimension $d$ is addre…
We consider the problem of deciding if a set of quantum one-qudit gates $\mathcal{S}=\{g_1,\ldots,g_n\}\subset G$ is universal, i.e if the closure $\overline{<\mathcal{S}>}$ is equal to $G$, where $G$ is either the special unitary or the special orthogonal group. To every gate $g$ in $\mathcal{S}$ we asign its image under the adjoint representation $\mathrm{Ad}_g$, where $\mathrm{Ad}:G\rightarrow SO(\mathfrak{g})$ and $\mathfrak{g}$ is the Lie algebra of $G$. The necessary condition for the universality of $\mathcal{S}$ is that the only matrices that commute with all $\mathrm{Ad}_{g_i}$'s are …
The qubit SWAP gate has been shown to be an integral component of quantum circuitry design. It permutes the states of two qubits and allows for the storage quantum information, teleportation of atomic or ionic states, and is a fundamental element in the circuit implementation of Shor's algorithm. We consider the problem of generalising the SWAP gate beyond the qubit setting. We show that quantum circuit architectures completely described by instances of the CNOT gate can not implement a transposition of a pair of qudits for dimensions $d \equiv 3 (mod 4)$. The task of constructing generalised …
We introduce a scheme to characterise a qudit T gate that has different noise than a set of Clifford gates. We developed our scheme through representation theory and ring theory to generalise non-Clifford interleaved benchmarking to qudit systems. By restricting to the qubit case, we recover the dihedral benchmarking scheme. Our characterisation scheme provides experimental physicists a practical method for characterising universal qudit gate sets and advances randomised benchmarking research by providing the characterisation of a complete qudit library.
A long-standing open problem in fault-tolerant quantum computation has been to find a universal set of transversal gates. As three of us proved in arXiv: 0706.1382, such a set does not exist for binary stabilizer codes. Here we generalize our work to show that for subsystem stabilizer codes in $d$ dimensional Hilbert space, such a universal set of transversal gates cannot exist for even one encoded qudit, for any dimension $d$, prime or nonprime. This result strongly supports the idea that other primitives, such as quantum teleportation, are necessary for universal fault-tolerant quantum compu…
When visualised as an operation on the Bloch sphere, the qubit "pi-over-eight" gate corresponds to one-eighth of a complete rotation about the vertical axis. This simple gate often plays an important role in quantum information theory, typically in situations for which Pauli and Clifford gates are insufficient. Most notably, when it supplements the set of Clifford gates then universal quantum computation can be achieved. The "pi-over-eight" gate is the simplest example of an operation from the third level of the Clifford hierarchy (i.e., it maps Pauli operations to Clifford operations under co…
We consider the problem of time-optimal realization of the quantum Fourier transform gate for a single qudit with number of levels d from 3 to 8. As a qudit the quadrupole nucleus with spin I > 1/2 controlled by NMR is considered. We calculate the dependencies of the gate error on the duration of radio-frequency pulse obtained by numerical optimization using Krotov-based algorithm. It is shown that the dependences of minimum time of QFT gate implementation on qudit dimension are different for integer and half-integer spins.
Based on a microwave-photon quantum processor with two superconducting resonators coupled to one transmon qutrit, we construct the controlled-phase (c-phase) gate on microwave-photon-resonator qudits, by combination of the photon-number-dependent frequency-shift effect on the transmon qutrit by the first resonator and the resonant operation between the qutrit and the second resonator. This distinct feature provides us a useful way to achieve the c-phase gate on the two resonator qudits with a higher fidelity and a shorter operation time, compared with the previous proposals. The fidelity of ou…
We propose a normal form for single-qudit gates composed of Clifford and $T$-gates for qudits of odd prime dimension $p\geq 5$. We prove that any single-qudit Clifford+$T$ operator can be re-expressed in this normal form in polynomial time. We also provide strong numerical evidence that this normal form is unique. Assuming uniqueness, we are able to use this normal form to provide an algorithm for exact synthesis of any single-qudit Clifford+$T$ operator with minimal $T$-count.
Quantum tomography makes it possible to obtain comprehensive information about certain logical elements of a quantum computer. In this regard, it is a promising tool for debugging quantum computers. The practical application of tomography, however, is still limited by systematic measurement errors. Their main source are errors in the quantum state preparation and measurement procedures. In this work, we investigate the possibility of suppressing these errors in the case of ion-based qudits. First, we will show that one can construct a quantum measurement protocol that contains no more than a s…
