Given a conformal mapping $f$ of the unit disk $\mathbb D$ onto a simply connected domain $D$ in the complex plane bounded by a closed Jordan curve, we consider the problem of constructing a matching conformal mapping, i.e., the mapping of the exterior of the unit disk $\mathbb D^*$ onto the exterior domain $D^*$ regarding to $D$. The answer is expressed in terms of a linear differential equation with a driving term given as the kernel of an operator dependent on the original mapping $f$. Examples are provided. This study is related to the problem of conformal welding and to representation of the Virasoro algebra in the space of univalent functions.
We construct a conformally invariant random family of closed curves in the plane by welding of random homeomorphisms of the unit circle given in terms of the exponential of Gaussian Free Field. We conjecture that our curves are locally related to SLE$(κ)$ for $κ<4$.
Consider two critical Liouville quantum gravity surfaces (i.e., $γ$-LQG for $γ=2$), each with the topology of $\mathbb{H}$ and with infinite boundary length. We prove that there a.s. exists a conformal welding of the two surfaces, when the boundaries are identified according to quantum boundary length. This results in a critical LQG surface decorated by an independent SLE$_4$. Combined with the proof of uniqueness for such a welding, recently established by McEnteggart, Miller, and Qian (2018), this shows that the welding operation is well-defined. Our result is a critical analogue of Sheffiel…
We construct a conformally invariant random family of closed curves in the plane by welding of random homeomorphisms of the unit circle. The homeomorphism is constructed using the exponential of $βX$ where $X$ is the restriction of the two dimensional free field on the circle and the parameter $β$ is in the "high temperature" regime $β<\sqrt 2$. The welding problem is solved by studying a non-uniformly elliptic Beltrami equation with a random complex dilatation. For the existence a method of Lehto is used. This requires sharp probabilistic estimates to control conformal moduli of annuli and th…
Two-pointed quantum disks with a weight parameter $W > 0$ are a family of finite-area random surfaces that arise naturally in Liouville quantum gravity. In this paper we show that conformally welding two quantum disks according to their boundary lengths gives another quantum disk decorated with an independent chordal $\mathrm{SLE}_κ(ρ_-;ρ_+)$ curve. This is the finite-volume counterpart of the classical result of Sheffield (2010) and Duplantier-Miller-Sheffield (2014) on the welding of infinite-area two-pointed quantum surfaces called quantum wedges, which is fundamental to the mating-of-trees…
We construct a conformal welding of two Liouville quantum gravity random surfaces and show that the interface between them is a random fractal curve called the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE), thereby resolving a variant of a conjecture of Peter Jones. We also demonstrate some surprising symmetries of this construction, which are consistent with the belief that (path decorated) random planar maps have (SLE-decorated) Liouville quantum gravity as a scaling limit. We present several precise conjectures and open questions.
We construct a (non-removable) Jordan curve $Γ$ and a non-Möbius homeomorphism of the Riemann sphere which is conformal on the complement of $Γ$ and maps the curve $Γ$ onto itself. The curve is flexible in the sense of Bishop and may be taken to have zero area. The existence of such curves and conformal homeomorphisms is closely related to the non-injectivity of conformal welding.
The Loewner-Kufarev evolution produces asymptotics for mappings onto domains close to the unit disk or the exterior of the unit disk. We deduce variational formulae which lead to the asymptotic conformal welding for such domains. The comparison of mappings onto bounded and unbounded components of the Jordan curve establishes an asymptotic connection between driving functions in both versions of the Loewner-Kufarev equation and conformal radii of the two domains.
Given a finitely connected region $Ω$ of the Riemann sphere whose complement consists of $m$ mutually disjoint closed disks $\bar{U}_j$, the random homeomorphism $h_j$ on the boundary component $\partial U_j$ is constructed using the exponential Gaussian free field. The existence and uniqueness of random conformal welding of $Ω$ with $h_j$ is established by investigating a non-uniformly elliptic Betrami equation with a random complex dilatation. This generalizes the result of Astala, Jones, Kupiainen and Saksman to multiply connected domains.
By modifying a domain first suggested by Ruth Goodman in 1935 and by exploiting the explicit solution by Fedorov of the Polyá-Chebotarev problem in the case of four symmetrically placed points, an improved upper bound for the univalent Bloch-Landau constant is obtained. The domain that leads to this improved bound takes the form of a disk from which some arcs are removed in such a way that the resulting simply connected domain is harmonically symmetric in each arc with respect to the origin. The existence of domains of this type is established, using techniques from conformal welding, and some…
We construct a family of random Jordan curves in the plane by welding together two disks on their boundaries using a random homeomorphism. This homeomorphism arises from a random measure whose density, in a generalized sense, is the exponentiated Gaussian Free Field at criticality. We also introduce a representation of the Gaussian Free Field in terms of vaguelets, which may be of separate interest. The result extends a theorem of Astala, Jones, Kupiainen and Saksman (\cite{AJKS09}) to criticality.
We prove Runge-type theorems and universality results for locally univalent holomorphic and meromorphic functions. Refining a result of M. Heins, we also show that there is a universal bounded locally univalent function on the unit disk. These results are used to prove that on any hyperbolic simply connected plane domain there exist universal conformal metrics with prescribed constant curvature.
A quantum surface (QS) is an equivalence class of pairs $(D,H)$ of simply connected domains $D\subsetneq\mathbb{C}$ and random distributions $H$ on $D$ induced by the conformal equivalence for random metric spaces. This distribution-valued random field is extended to a QS with $N+1$ marked boundary points (MBPs) with $N\in\mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0}$. We propose the conformal welding problem for it in the case of $N\in\mathbb{Z}_{\ge 1}$. If $N=1$, it is reduced to the problem introduced by Sheffield, who solved it by coupling the QS with the Schramm--Loewner evolution (SLE). When $N \ge 3$, there natu…
Conformal surface parameterization is useful in graphics, imaging and visualization, with applications to texture mapping, atlas construction, registration, remeshing and so on. With the increasing capability in scanning and storing data, dense 3D surface meshes are common nowadays. While meshes with higher resolution better resemble smooth surfaces, they pose computational difficulties for the existing parameterization algorithms. In this work, we propose a novel parallelizable algorithm for computing the global conformal parameterization of simply-connected surfaces via partial welding maps.…
We give a simple set of geometric conditions on curves $η$, $\tildeη$ in ${\mathbf H}$ from $0$ to $\infty$ so that if $φ\colon {\mathbf H} \to {\mathbf H}$ is a homeomorphism which is conformal off $η$ with $φ(η) = \tildeη$ then $φ$ is a conformal automorphism of ${\mathbf H}$. Our motivation comes from the fact that it is possible to apply our result to random conformal welding problems related to the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG). In particular, we show that if $η$ is a non-space-filling SLE$_κ$ curve in ${\mathbf H}$ from $0$ to $\infty$ and $φ$ is a h…
We consider the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE$_κ$) with $κ=4$, the critical value of $κ> 0$ at or below which SLE$_κ$ is a simple curve and above which it is self-intersecting. We show that the range of an SLE$_4$ curve is a.s. conformally removable, answering a question posed by Sheffield. Such curves arise as the conformal welding of a pair of independent critical ($γ=2$) Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surfaces along their boundaries and our result implies that this conformal welding is unique. In order to establish this result, we give a new sufficient condition for a set $X \subseteq {\m…
For conformal maps defined in the unit disk one can define a certain Poisson bracket that involves the harmonic moments of the image domain. When this bracket is applied to the conformal map itself together with its conformally reflected map the result is identically one. This is called the string equation, and it is closely connected to the governing equation, the Polubarinova-Galin equation, for the evolution of a Hele-Shaw blob of a viscous fluid (or, by another name, Laplacian growth). In the present paper we investigate to what extent the string equation makes sense and holds for non-univ…
In this note we discuss some problems related to conformal slit-mappings. On the one hand, classical Loewner theory leads us to questions concerning the embedding of univalent functions into slit-like Loewner chains. On the other hand, a recent result from monotone probability theory motivates the study of univalent functions from a probabilistic perspective.
In this article, we obtain quasiconformal extensions of some classes of conformal maps defined either on the unit disc or on the exterior of it onto the extended complex plane. Some of these extensions have been obtained by constructing suitable Loewner chains and others have been obtained by applying a well-known result.
Given a set $\mathfrak S$ of conformal maps of the unit disk $\mathbb D$ into itself that is closed under composition, we address the question whether $\mathfrak S$ can be represented as the reachable set of a Loewner - Kufarev - type ODE $\mathrm{d}w_t/\mathrm{d}t=G_t\circ w_t$, $w_0=\mathsf{id}_{\mathbb D}$, where the control functions $t\mapsto G_t$ form a convex cone $\mathcal M_{\mathfrak S}$. For the set of all conformal $φ:\mathbb D\to\mathbb D$ with $φ(0)=0$, $φ'(0)>0$, an affirmative answer to this question is the essence of Loewner's well-known Parametric Representation of univalent …
In this article, we determine the radius of univalence of sections of normalized univalent harmonic mappings for which the range is convex (resp. starlike, close-to-convex, convex in one direction). Our result on the radius of univalence of section $s_{n,n}(f)$ is sharp especially when the corresponding mappings have convex range. In this case, each section $s_{n,n}(f)$ is univalent in the disk of radius $1/4$ for all $n\geq2$, which may be compared with classical result of Szegö on conformal mappings.
Let $f$ be a transcendental entire function and let $U$ be a univalent Baker domain of $f$. We prove a new result about the boundary behaviour of conformal maps and use this to show that the non-escaping boundary points of $U$ form a set of harmonic measure zero with respect to $U$. This leads to a new sufficient condition for the escaping set of $f$ to be connected, and also a new general result on Eremenko's conjecture.
The hereditary property of convexity and starlikeness for conformal mappings does not generalize to univalent harmonic mappings. This failure leads us to the notion of fully starlike and convex mappings of order α, (0\leq α<1). A bound for the radius of fully starlikeness and fully convexity of order αis determined for certain families of univalent harmonic mappings. Convexity is not preserved under the convolution of univalent harmonic convex mappings, unlike in the analytic case. Given two univalent harmonic convex mappings f and g, the problem of finding the radius r_{0} such that f*g is a …
A classical result in the theory of Loewner's parametric representation states that the semigroup $\mathfrak U_*$ of all conformal self-maps $ϕ$ of the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ normalized by $ϕ(0) = 0$ and $ϕ'(0) > 0$ can be obtained as the reachable set of the Loewner - Kufarev control system $$ \frac{\mathrm{d} w_t}{\mathrm{d} t}=G_t\circ w_t,\quad t\geqslant0,\qquad w_0=\mathsf{id}_{\mathbb{D}}, $$ where the control functions $t\mapsto G_t\in\mathsf{Hol}(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C})$ form a certain convex cone. Here we extend this result to the semigroup $\mathfrak U[F]$ consisting of all conformal…
The classical estimate of Bieberbach -- that $|a_2|\le2$ for a given univalent function $ϕ(z)=z+a_2z^2+...$ in the class $S$ -- leads to best possible pointwise estimates of the ratio $ϕ''(z)/ϕ'(z)$ for $ϕ\in S$, first obtained by Kœbe and Bieberbach. For the corresponding class $Σ$ of univalent functions in the exterior disk, Goluzin found in 1943 -- by extremality methods -- the corresponding best possible pointwise estimates of $ψ''(z)/ψ'(z)$ for $ψ\inΣ$. It was perhaps surprising that this time, the expressions involve elliptic integrals. Here, we obtain the area-type theorem which has Gol…
We study the so-called integral means spectrum for univalent functions on the unit disk. Using an inequality of Prawitz (generalizing the classical area theorem of Gronwall), we find -- by applying a Moebius mapping to lift the result to the bidisk -- that it is possible to obtain rather strong estimates from above on the integral means spectrum.
Let $\ID$ denote the open unit disc and let $p\in (0,1)$. We consider the family $Co(p)$ of functions $f:\ID\to \overline{\IC}$ that satisfy the following conditions: \bee \item[(i)] $f$ is meromorphic in $\ID$ and has a simple pole at the point $p$. \item[(ii)] $f(0)=f'(0)-1=0$. \item[(iii)] $f$ maps $\ID$ conformally onto a set whose complement with respect to $\overline{\IC}$ is convex. \eee We determine the exact domains of variability of some coefficients $a_n(f)$ of the Laurent expansion $$f(z)=\sum_{n=-1}^{\infty} a_n(f)(z-p)^n,\quad |z-p|<1-p, $$ for $f\in Co(p)$ and certain values of …
Let ${\mathcal S^0}(H_γ)$ denote the class of all univalent, harmonic, sense-preserving and normalized mappings $f$ of the unit disk $\ID$ onto the slanted half-plane $H_γ:=\{w:\,{\rm Re\,}(e^{iγ}w) >-1/2\}$ with an additional condition $f_{\bar{z}}(0)=0$. Functions in this class can be constructed by the shear construction due to Clunie and Sheil-Small which allows by examining their conformal counterpart. Unlike the conformal case, convolution of two univalent harmonic convex mappings in $\ID$ is not necessarily even univalent in $\ID$. In this paper, we fix $f_0\in{\mathcal S^0}(H_{0})$ and…
Using quasiconformal mappings, we prove that any Riemann surface of finite connectivity and finite genus is conformally equivalent to an intrinsic circle domain U in a compact Riemann surface S. This means that each connected component B of S \ U is either a point or a closed geometric disc with respect to the complete constant curvature conformal metric of the Riemann surface (U union B). Moreover the pair (U,S) is unique up to conformal isomorphisms. We give a generalization to countably infinite connectivity. Finally we show how one can compute numerical approximations to intrinsic circle d…
We study metric spheres Z obtained by gluing two hemispheres of the Euclidean sphere along an orientation-preserving homeomorphism mapping the equator onto itself, where the distance on Z is the canonical distance that is locally isometric to the spherical distance off the seam. We show that if Z is quasiconformally equivalent to the sphere, in the geometric sense, then g is a welding homeomorphism with conformally removable welding curves. We also show that g is bi-Lipschitz if and only if Z has a 1-quasiconformal parametrization whose Jacobian is comparable to the Jacobian of a quasiconforma…
Let $G$ be a bounded simply connected domain in the complex plane. A point $a\in \partial G$ is said to be accessible from inside of $G$ if there is a Jordan arc $J$ such that $J\subset \bar G$ and $J\cap\partial G=\{a\}$. In this paper the author shows that a univalent analytic function $ψ$ from the unit disk $D$ onto $G$ extends continuously to $\bar D$ if and only if every $a\in\partial G$ is accessible. The main result covers a famous theorem proved by C. Caratheödory, which says that if $G$ is a Jordan domain, then $ψ$ extends to be a homeomorphism from $\bar D$ onto to $\bar G$.
Z. Nehari developed a general technique for obtaining inequalities for conformal maps and domain functions from contour integrals and the Dirichlet principle. Given a harmonic function with singularity on a domain $R$, it associates a monotonic functional of subdomains $D \subseteq R$. In the case that $R$ is conformally equivalent to a disk, we extend Nehari's method by associating a functional to any quadratic differential on $R$ with specified singularities. Nehari's method corresponds to the special case that the quadratic differential is of the form $(\partial q)^2$ for a singular harmoni…
Let Σbe a compact Riemann surface with n distinguished points p_1,...,p_n. We prove that the set of n-tuples (ϕ_1,...,ϕ_n) of univalent mappings ϕ_i from the open unit disc into Σmapping 0 to p_i, with non-overlapping images and quasiconformal extensions to a neighbourhood of the closed unit disk, carries a natural complex Banach manifold structure. This complex structure is locally modelled on the n-fold product of a two complex-dimensional extension of the universal Teichmueller space. Our results are motivated by Teichmueller theory and two-dimensional conformal field theory.
The Bieberbach estimate, a pivotal result in the classical theory of univalent functions, states that any injective holomorphic function $f$ on the open unit disc $D$ satisfies $|f"(0)|\leq 4 |f'(0)|$. We generalize the Bieberbach estimate by proving a version of the inequality that applies to all injective smooth conformal immersions $f : D\to \Bbb R^n, n\geq 2$. The new estimate involves two correction terms. The first one is geometric, coming from the second fundamental form of the image surface $f(D)$. The second term is of a dynamical nature, and involves certain Riemannian quantities ass…
For a simply connected domain $G$, let $\partial_{a}G$ be the set of accessible points in $\partial G$ and let $\partial_{n} G=\partial G-\partial_{a}G$. A point $a\in\partial G$ is called semi-unreachable if there is a crosscut $J$ of $G$ and domains $U$ and $V$ such that $G-J=U\cup V$ and $a\in(\partial_{n} U\cup\partial_{n} V)-J$. We use $\partial_{sn}G$ to denote the set of semi-unreachable points. In this article we show that a univalent analytic function $ψ$ from the unit disk $D$ onto $G$ extends continuously to $\overline D$ if and only if $\partial_{sn}G=\emptyset$. As a consequence, …
In this paper, we study harmonic mappings by using the shear construction, introduced by Clunie and Sheil-Small in 1984. We consider two classes of conformal mappings, each of which maps the unit disk D univalently onto a domain which is convex in the horizontal direction, and shear these mappings with suitable dilatations ω. Mappings of the first class map the unit disk D onto four-slit domains and mappings of the second class take D onto regular n-gons. In addition, we discuss the minimal surfaces associated with such harmonic mappings. Furthermore, illustrations of mappings and associated m…
We study the class ${\mathcal C}(Ω)$ of univalent analytic functions $f$ in the unit disk $\mathbb{D} = \{z \in \mathbb{C} :\,|z|<1 \}$ of the form $f(z)=z+\sum_{n=2}^{\infty}a_n z^n$ satisfying \[ 1+\frac{zf"(z)}{f'(z)} \in Ω, \quad z\in \mathbb{D}, \] where $Ω$ will be a proper subdomain of ${\mathbb C}$ which is starlike with respect to $1 (\in Ω)$. Let $ϕ_Ω$ be the unique conformal mapping of ${\mathbb D}$ onto $Ω$ with $ϕ_Ω(0)=1$ and $ϕ_Ω'(0) > 0$ and $ k_Ω(z) = \int_0^z \exp \left(\int_0^t ζ^{-1} (ϕ_Ω(ζ) -1) \, d ζ\right) \, dt$. Let $L_r(f)$ denote the arclength of the image of the circ…
We continue our study on variability regions in \cite{Ali-Vasudevarao-Yanagihara-2018}, where the authors determined the region of variability $V_Ω^j (z_0, c ) = \{ \int_0^{z_0} z^{j}(g(z)-g(0))\, d z : g({\mathbb D}) \subset Ω, \; (P^{-1} \circ g) (z) = c_0 +c_1z + \cdots + c_n z^n + \cdots \}$ for each fixed $z_0 \in {\mathbb D}$, $j=-1,0,1,2, \ldots$ and $c = (c_0, c_1 , \ldots , c_n) \in \mathbb{C}^{n+1}$, when $Ω\subsetneq\mathbb{C}$ is a convex domain, and $P$ is a conformal map of the unit disk ${\mathbb D}$ onto $Ω$. In the present article, we first show that in the case $n=0$, $j=-1$ …
