We report on recent studies of the spin-half Heisenberg and the Hubbard model on the sawtooth chain. For both models we construct a class of exact eigenstates which are localized due to the frustrating geometry of the lattice for a certain relation of the exchange (hopping) integrals. Although these eigenstates differ in details for the two models because of the different statistics, they share some characteristic features. The localized eigenstates are highly degenerate and become ground states in high magnetic fields (Heisenberg model) or at certain electron fillings (Hubbard model), respectively. They may dominate the low-temperature thermodynamics and lead to an extra low-temperature maximum in the specific heat. The ground-state degeneracy can be calculated exactly by a mapping of the manifold of localized ground states onto a classical hard-dimer problem, and explicit expressions for thermodynamic quantities can be derived which are valid at low temperatures near the saturation field for the Heisenberg model or around a certain value of the chemical potential for the Hubbard model, respectively.
An exactly solvable model of the sawtooth chain with Ising and Heisenberg bonds and with coupling to lattice distortion for Heisenberg bonds is considered in the magnetic field. Using the direct transfer-matrix formalism an exact description of the thermodynamic functions is obtained. The ground state phase diagrams for all regions of parameters values containing phases corresponding to the magnetization plateaus at $M=0,1/4$ and 1/2 have been obtained. Exact formulas for bond distortions for various ground states are presented. A novel mechanism of magnetization plateau stabilization correspo…
We apply the rotation-invariant Green's function method (RGM) to study the spin $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on a one-dimensional sawtooth lattice, which has two nonequivalent sites in the unit cell. We check the RGM predictions for observable quantities by comparison with the exact-diagonalization and finite-temperature-Lanczos calculations. We discuss the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of this model in relation to the mineral atacamite Cu$_2$Cl(OH)$_3$ complementing the RGM outcomes by results of other approaches.
Magnetization plateaus and enhanced magnetocaloric effect of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg double sawtooth ladder with four-spin interaction
The mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg double sawtooth ladder containing mixture of both spin-1 and spin-1/2 nodal atoms, and the spin-1/2 interstitial dimers is approximately solved by the transfer-matrix method. Here, we study in detail the ground-state phase diagrams, also influences of the bilinear exchange coupling on the rungs and cyclic four-spin exchange interaction in square plaquette of each block on the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the suggested ladder at low temperature. Such a double sawtooth ladder may be found in a Shastry-Sutherland Lattice-type. In spite of od…
Antikink dispersion of the asymmetric $J_1$-$J_2$ sawtooth spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain has been derived. Value of spin-gap is obtained by estimating the minimum of dispersion relation variationally. The exact doubly-degenerate ground state energy has been derived at the symmetric point, $J_1=J_2$, for the whole anisotropic regime. Analytic form of dispersion relations of three different antikink states is obtained and their validity in the parameter space is discussed. The value of spin-gap, specific heat and susceptibility are estimated numerically by diagonalizing…
We consider the strongly anisotropic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model on the sawtooth-chain lattice with ferromagnetic longitudinal interaction $J^{zz}=ΔJ$ and aniferromagnetic transversal interaction $J^{xx}=J^{yy}=J>0$. At $Δ=-1/2$ the lowest one-magnon excitation band is dispersionless (flat) leading to a massively degenerate set of ground states. Interestingly, this model admits a three-coloring representation of the ground-state manifold [H.~J.~Changlani et at., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 120}, 117202 (2018)]. We characterize this ground-state manifold and elaborate the low-temperature thermodynamics of t…
A small value of the spin gap in quantum antiferromagnets with strong frustration makes them susceptible to nominally small deviations from the ideal Heisenberg model. One of such perturbations, the anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, is an important perturbation for the $S=1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet, one of the current candidates for a quantum-disordered ground state. We study the influence of the DM term in a related one-dimensional system, the sawtooth chain that has valence-bond order in its ground state. Through a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we show that a…
Thermal DMRG is investigated with emphasis of employability in molecular magnetism studies. To this end magnetic observables at finite temperature are evaluated for two one-dimensional quantum spin systems: a Heisenberg chain with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction and a frustrated sawtooth (delta) chain. It is found that thermal DMRG indeed accurately approximates magnetic observables for the chain as well as for the sawtooth chain, but in the latter case only for sufficiently high temperatures. We speculate that the reason is due to the peculiar structure of the low-energy spectr…
We perform exact numeric calculations for the two-orbital Hubbard model on the four-site cluster. In the limit of large on-site coupling the model becomes equivalent to the spin $S=1$ Heisenberg model. By comparing energy spectra of these two models, we quantified the range of interaction parameters for which the Heisenberg model satisfactorily reproduces the two-orbital Hubbard model. Then we examined how the spectrum evolves when we are outside of this region, focusing especially on checking of how it is modified when various ways of interatomic hoppings of electrons between different orbita…
We discuss how to locate critical points in the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) universality class by means of gap-scaling analyses. While accurately determining such points using gap extrapolation procedures is usually challenging and inaccurate due to the exponentially small value of the gap in the vicinity of the critical point, we show that a generic gap-scaling analysis, including the effects of logarithmic corrections, provides very accurate estimates of BKT transition points in a variety of spin and fermionic models. As a first example, we show how the scaling procedure, combined …
In spin-1/2 one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets and anisotropic triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets, high-energy states carrying considerable spectral weights have been observed in a magnetic field using inelastic neutron scattering. Such high-energy properties cannot be explained in terms of either Nambu-Goldstone bosons due to spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries or quasiparticles in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Here, we show that the mechanism causing the high-energy states is analogous to that of the upper Hubbard band in the one-dimensional Hubbard model, by theoretica…
We study the effects of charge degrees of freedom on the spin excitation dynamics in quasi-one dimensional magnetic materials. Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the Hubbard model at half electronic filling on a chain and on a ladder geometry, and compare the results with those obtained using the Heisenberg model, where charge degrees of freedom are considered frozen. For both chains and two-leg ladders, we find that the Hubbard model spectrum qualitatively resembles the Heisenberg spectrum -- with low-energy peaks resembl…
The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ delta-chain (sawtooth chain) with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg basal chain and Ising apical-basal interactions is studied. The basal-apical interactions involve the bond alternation. The limiting cases of the model include the symmetrical delta-chain and the antiferromagnetic chain in the staggered magnetic field. We study ground state properties of the model by the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. The ground state phase diagram as a function of the bond alternation consists of magnetic and various non-magnetic phases. All phases ex…

We consider the repulsive Hubbard model on three highly frustrated one-dimensional lattices -- sawtooth chain and two kagomé chains -- with completely dispersionless (flat) lowest single-electron bands. We construct the complete manifold of {\em exact many-electron} ground states at low electron fillings and calculate the degeneracy of these states. As a result, we obtain closed-form expressions for low-temperature thermodynamic quantities around a particular value of the chemical potential $μ_0$. We discuss specific features of thermodynamic quantities of these ground-state ensembles such as …
In this review we recapitulate the basic features of the flat-band spin systems and briefly summarize earlier studies in the field. Main emphasis is made on recent developments which include results for both spin and electron flat-band models. In particular, for flat-band spin systems we highlight field-driven phase transitions for frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets at low temperatures, chiral flat-band states, as well as the effect of a slight dispersion of a previously strictly flat band due to nonideal lattice geometry. For electronic systems, we discuss the universal low-temper…
Large-N solutions of the Heisenberg and Hubbard-Heisenberg models on the anisotropic triangular lattice: application to Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and to the layered organic superconductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X
We studied a multi-orbital Hubbard model at half-filling for two and three orbitals per site on a two-site cluster via full exact diagonalization, in a wide range for the onsite repulsion $U$, from weak to strong coupling, and multiple ratios of the Hund coupling $J_H$ to $U$. The hopping matrix elements among the orbitals were also varied extensively. At intermediate and large $U$, we mapped the results into a Heisenberg model. For two orbitals per site, the mapping is into a $S=1$ Heisenberg model where by symmetry both nearest-neighbor $(\mathbf{S}_{i}\cdot\mathbf{S}_{j})$ and $(\mathbf{S}_…
We illustrate how finite-temperature charge and thermal Drude weights of one-dimensional systems can be obtained from the relaxation of initial states featuring global (left-right) gradients in the chemical potential or temperature. The approach is tested for spinless interacting fermions as well as for the Fermi-Hubbard model, and the behaviour in the vicinity of singular points (such as half filling or isotropic chains) is discussed. We present technical details on how to implement the calculation in practice using the density matrix renormalization group and show that the non-equilibrium dy…
We numerically investigate the quantum criticality of the chiral Heisenberg universality class with the total number of fermion components $N$=8 in terms of the Gross-Neveu theory. Auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations are performed for the square lattice Hubbard model in the presence of a $d$-wave pairing field, inducing Dirac cones in the single particle spectrum. This property makes the model particularly interesting because it turns out to belong to the same universality class of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice, that is the canonical model for graphene, despite the uni…
For the Haldane phase, the magnetic field usually tends to break the symmetry and drives the system into a topologically trivial phase. Here, we report a novel reentrance of the Haldane phase at zero temperature in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on sawtooth chain. A partial Haldane phase is induced by the magnetic field, which is the combination of the Haldane state in one sublattice and a ferromagnetically ordered state in the other sublattice. Such a partial topological order is a result of the zero-temperature entropy due to quantum fluctuations caused by geometrical frustrat…
Comparison of the phase diagram of the half-filled layered organic superconductors with the phase diagram of the RVB theory of the Hubbard-Heisenberg model
We consider the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and the repulsive Hubbard model on two $N$-site one-dimensional lattices, which support dispersionless one-particle states corresponding to localized states on triangular trapping cells. We calculate the degeneracy of the ground states in the subspaces with $n\le n_{\max}$, $n_{\max}\propto N$ magnons or electrons as well as the contribution of these states (independent localized states) to thermodynamic quantities. Moreover, we discuss another class of low-lying eigenstates (so-called interacting localized states) and calculate their contribution t…
We consider the three-body problem in a generic multiband lattice, and analyze the dispersion of the trimer states that are made of two spin-$\uparrow$ fermions and a spin-$\downarrow$ fermion due to an onsite attraction in between. Based on a variational approach, we first obtain the exact solution in the form of a set of coupled integral equations, and then reduce it to an eigenvalue problem. As an illustration we apply our theory to the sawtooth lattice, and numerically show that energetically-stable trimers are allowed in a two-band setting, which is in sharp contrast with the single-band …
We present a theoretical study of single-particle and many-body properties of twisted bilayer WSe$_2$. For single-particle physics, we calculate the band topological phase diagram and electron local density of states (LDOS), which are found to be correlated. By comparing our theoretical LDOS with those measured by scanning tunneling microscopy, we comment on the possible topological nature of the first moiré valence band. For many-body physics, we construct a generalized Hubbard model on a triangular lattice based on the calculated single-particle moiré bands. We show that a layer potential di…
Na$_2$IrO$_3$ was one of the first materials proposed to feature the Kane-Mele type topological insulator phase. Contemporaneously it was claimed that the very same material is in a Mott insulating phase which is described by the Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model. First experiments indeed revealed Mott insulating behavior in conjunction with antiferromagnetic long-range order. Further refined experiments established antiferromagnetic order of zigzag type which is not captured by the KH model. Since then several extensions and modifications of the KH model were proposed in order to describe the expe…
We examine the nature of the transition to the antiferromagnetically ordered state in the half-filled three-dimensional Hubbard model using the dual-fermion multiscale approach. Consistent with analytics, in the weak-coupling regime we find that spin-flip excitations across the Fermi surface are important, and that the strong coupling regime is described by Heisenberg physics. In the intermediate interaction, strong correlation regime we find aspects of both local and non-local correlations. We analyze the critical exponents of the transition in the strong coupling regime and find them to be c…
We study the microscopic dynamics of competing ordered phases in a two-dimensional correlated electron model, which is driven with a pulsed electric field of finite duration. In order to go beyond a mean-field treatment of the electronic interactions we adopt a large-$N$ generalization of the Hubbard model and combine it with the semiclassical fermionic truncated Wigner approximation as a time evolution method. This allows us to calculate dephasing corrections to the mean-field dynamics and to obtain stationary states, which we interpret as prethermal order. We use this framework to simulate t…
In this work, we investigate the possible dramatic effects of Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on fermionic Hubbard model in a 2d square lattice. In the strong coupling limit, it leads to the Rotated Anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg model which is a new class of quantum spin model. For a special equivalent class, we identify a new spin-orbital entangled commensurate ground ( Y-y ) state subject to strong quantum fluctuations at $T=0$. We evaluate the quantum fluctuations by the spin wave expansion up to order $ 1/S^2 $. In some SOC parameter regime, the Y-y state supports a massive…
We start with a variational approach and derive a set of coupled integral equations for the bound states of $N$ identical spin-$\uparrow$ fermions and a single spin-$\downarrow$ fermion in a generic multiband Hubbard Hamiltonian with an attractive onsite interaction. As an illustration we apply our integral equations to the one-dimensional sawtooth lattice up to $N \le 3$, i.e., to the $(3+1)$-body problem, and reveal not only the presence of tetramer states in this two-band model but also their quasi-flat dispersion when formed in a flat band. Furthermore, for $N = \{4, 5, \cdots, 10 \}$, our…
We review the fact that U(1) gauge symmetry enables the mapping of one-dimensional Hubbard chains with Rashba-type spin orbit coupling to renormalized Hubbard Hamiltonians. The existence of the mapping has important consequences for the interpretation of ARPES experiments on one-dimensional chains subject to Rashba spin orbit coupling and can be exploited to check for the applicability of the mapping. We show numerical applications of the mapping and consider the implications for bosonization as well as for the Heisenberg-limit of the Hubbard model. In addition we point out the consequences fo…
We study the effects of a periodically varying electric field on the Hubbard model at half-filling on a triangular lattice. The electric field is incorporated through the phase of the nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude via the Peierls prescription. When the on-site interaction $U$ is much larger than the hopping, the effective Hamiltonian $H_{eff}$ describing the spin sector can be found using a Floquet perturbation theory. To third order in the hopping, $H_{eff}$ is found to have the form of a Heisenberg antiferromagnet with three different nearest-neighbor couplings $(J_α,J_β,J_γ)$ on bonds …
The method for calculating the isotropic exchange interactions in the paramagnetic phase is proposed. It is based on the mapping of the high-temperature expansion of the spin-spin correlation function calculated for the Heisenberg model onto Hubbard Hamiltonian one. The resulting expression for the exchange interaction has a compact and transparent formulation. The quality of the calculated exchange interactions is estimated by comparing the eigenvalue spectra of the Heisenberg model and low-energy magnetic part of the Hubbard model. By the example of quantum rings with different hopping setup…
In the quest for quantum spin liquids in three spatial dimensions (3D), we study the half-filled Hubbard model on the simple cubic lattice with hopping processes up to third neighbors. Employing the variational cluster approach (VCA), we determine the zero-temperature phase diagram: In addition to a paramagnetic metal at small interaction strength $U$ and various antiferromagnetic insulators at large $U$, we find an intermediate-$U$ antiferromagnetic metal. Most interestingly, we also identify a non-magnetic insulating region, extending from intermediate to strong $U$. Using VCA results in the…
