We study the Hubbard and Heisenberg models on hyperbolic lattices with open boundary conditions by means of mean-field approximations, spin-wave theory, and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. For the Hubbard model we use the auxiliary-field approach and for Heisenberg systems the stochastic series expansion algorithm and concentrate on bipartite lattices where the QMC simulations are free of the negative sign problem. The hyperbolic lattices have an extensive number of sites on the boundary, such that one has to distinguish between bulk and total density of states (DOS). The considered lattices are characterized by a Dirac-like total DOS, Schläfli indices $\{p,q\}=\{10,3\}$ and $\{8,3\}$, as well as by flat bands, $\{8,8\}$. The Dirac total DOS cuts off the logarithmic divergence of the staggered spin susceptibility and allows for a finite $U$ metal-to-insulator transition. This transition has the same mean-field exponents as for the Gross-Neveu transition in Euclidean space. We argue that this transition is induced by the open-boundary conditions and that it will be absent in the periodic case. In the presence of flat bands we observe the onset of magnetic ordering at any finite $U$. This conclusion holds even though the bulk DOS is constant at the Fermi energy for the three considered lattices. The magnetic state at intermediate coupling can be described as a global antiferromagnet. It breaks the $C_p$ rotational and time-reversal symmetries but remains invariant under combined $C_p \mathcal{T}$ transformations. The state is characterized by macroscopic ferromagnetic moments, that globally cancel. We observe that fluctuations on the boundary of the system are greatly enhanced: While spin-wave calculations predict the breakdown of antiferromagnetism on the boundary but not in the bulk, QMC simulations show a marked reduction of the staggered moment on the edge of the system.
We study antiferromagnetism and single-particle properties in the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model at low temperature. Collective spin fluctuations are governed by a non-linear sigma model that we derive from the Hubbard model for any value of the Coulomb repulsion. As the Coulomb repulsion increases, the ground state progressively evolves from a Slater to a Mott-Heisenberg antiferromagnet. At finite temperature, we find a metal-insulator transition between a pseudogap phase at weak coupling and a Mott-Hubbard insulator at strong coupling.
The perfect-nesting instability towards antiferromagnetism of the Hubbard model is suppressed by next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. The exact asymptotic behavior of the critical coupling U_c(t') at small t' is calculated in dimensions d=2,3 and infinity using Hartree theory, and the order of the transition is determined. A region of stability of a metallic antiferromagnetic phase in d=3 is identified.
The two-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard model is studied at half-filling within both Hartree-Fork and Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson theory. The interplay between two types of long-range order, bond-order wave (BOW) and antiferromagnetism (AFM), is analysed for two representative dimerization patterns, corresponding both to the same wavevector $(π,π)$. For each pattern, the Peierls dimerization (and associated BOW) is weakened and finally suppressed with increasing Hubbard on-site interaction, and correspondingly AFM is gradually enhanced. In particular, a coexistence regime with both BOW and AFM…
Antiferromagnetism and $d$-wave superconductivity are the most important competing ground-state phases of cuprate superconductors. Using cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) for the Hubbard model, we revisit the question of the coexistence and competition of these phases in the one-band Hubbard model with realistic band parameters and interaction strengths. With an exact diagonalization solver, we improve on previous works with a more complete bath parametrization which is carefully chosen to grant the maximal possible freedom to the hybridization function for a given number of bath or…
A self-consistent spin-fluctuation theory is developed to obtain T_N vs. U for the half-filled Hubbard antiferromagnet in the whole U/t range. Good agreement is obtained in the strong coupling limit with the high-temperature series-expansion result for the equivalent Heisenberg model. Quantum, spin-fluctuation correction to the sublattice magnetization is also obtained for all U at the one-loop level. A spin picture is used throughout, and quantum effects are incorporated through transverse spin fluctuations, which are evaluated in the RPA using a new method.
We present a first study of the antiferromagnetic state in the 2D t-t'-U model at finite temperatures by the composite operator method, providing simultaneously a fully self-consistent treatment of the paramagnetic and the AF phase. Near half-filling the critical value of the Coulomb repulsion as a function of t' and the temperature dependence of the magnetization and of the internal energy per site have been studied.
We analyze the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model by combining a functional renormalization group flow with a mean-field theory for spontaneous symmetry breaking. Effective interactions are computed by integrating out states above a scale Lambda_{MF} in one-loop approximation, which captures in particular the generation of an attraction in the d-wave Cooper channel from fluctuations in the particle-hole channel. These effective interactions are then used as an input for a mean-field treatment of the remaining low-energy states, wit…
Motivated by the recent numerical simulations for doped $t$-$J$ model on the honeycomb lattice, we study superconductivity of singlet and triplet pairing on the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model. We show that a superconducting state with coexisting spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings is induced by the antiferromagnetic order near half filling. The superconducting state we obtain has a topological phase transition that separates a topologically trivial state and a nontrivial state with Chern number two. Possible experimental realization of such a topological superconductivity is also discussed…
The Gaussian Effective Potential (GEP) is shown to be a useful variational tool for the study of the magnetic properties of strongly correlated electronic systems. The GEP is derived for a single band Hubbard model on a two-dimensional bi-partite square lattice in the strong coupling regime. At half-filling the antiferromagnetic order parameter emerges as the minimum of the effective potential with an accuracy which improves over RPA calculations and is very close to that achieved by Monte Carlo simulations. Extensions to other magnetic systems are discussed.
As a model for the B 2pz bands of MgB$_2$, a half-filled Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice is studied, and a possibility of an antiferromagnetism (AF) at the ground state is examined by Monte Carlo calculations as well as a random phase approximation method. On a single-layer honeycomb lattice, a paramagnetic to AF phase transition occurs at a finite value of the repulsion energy $U_c/t \simeq 3.6$, due to the loss of the density of states at the fermi level. On a layered honeycomb lattice, however, inter-layer hopping term creates a perfect nesting of the fermi surface, and leads the AF wi…
We study the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional half-filled square lattice using the dynamical cluster approximation. We present results on the phase boundaries between the paramagnetic metallic (normal) state and the insulating antiferromagnetic state, as well as between the antiferromagnetic and charge order states. We find hysteresis along the antiferromagnet/charge order and normal/charge order phase boundaries (at larger values of the on-site interaction), indicating first order phase transitions. We show that nearest neighbor interactions lower the critical temperature for the a…
We describe a low-temperature approach to the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model which allows us to study both antiferromagnetism and single-particle properties. This approach ignores amplitude fluctuations of the antiferromagnetic (AF) order parameter and is valid below a crossover temperature $T_X$ which marks the onset of AF short-range order. Directional fluctuations (spin waves) are described by a non-linear sigma model (NL$σ$M) that we derive from the Hubbard model. At zero temperature and weak coupling, our results are typical of a Slater antiferromagnet. The AF gap is exponentia…
We study the phase diagram of a new model that exhibits a first order transition between s-wave superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases. The model, a generalized Hubbard model augmented with competing spin-spin and pair-pair interactions, was investigated using the projector Quantum Monte Carlo method. Upon varying the Hubbard $U$ from attractive to repulsive we find a first order phase transition between superconducting and antiferromagnetic states.
We introduce a local formalism to deal with the Hubbard model on a N times N square lattice (for even N) in terms of eigenstates of number operators, having well defined point symmetry. For U -> 0, the low lying shells of the kinetic energy are filled in the ground state. At half filling, using the 2N-2 one-body states of the partially occupied shell S_{hf}, we build a set of (2N-2 N-1)^{2} degenerate unperturbed ground states with S_{z}=0 which are then resolved by the Hubbard interaction $\hat{W}=U\sum_{r}\hat{n}_{r\ua}\hat{n}_{r\da}$. In S_{hf} we study the many-body eigenstates of the kine…
A variational ground state of the repulsive Hubbard model on a square lattice is investigated numerically for an intermediate coupling strength (U = 8t) and for moderate sizes (from 6 x 6 to 10 x 10). Our ansatz is clearly superior to other widely used variational wave functions. The results for order parameters and correlation functions provide new insight for the antiferromagnetic state at half filling as well as strong evidence for a superconducting phase away from half filling.
We supplement (and critically overview) the existing extensive analysis of antiferromagnetic solution for the Hubbard model with a detailed discussion of two specific features, namely (i) the evolution of the magnetic (Slater) gap (here renormalized by the electronic correlations) into the Mott-Hubbard or atomic gap, and (ii) a rather weak renormalization of the effective mass by the correlations in the half-filled-band case, which contrasts with that for the paramagnetic case. The mass remains strongly enhanced in the non-half-filled-band case. We also stress the difference between magnetic a…
The dual-fermion approach offers a way to perform diagrammatic expansion around the dynamical mean-field theory. Using this formalism, the influence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations on the self-energy is taken into account through ladder-type diagrams in the particle-hole channel. The resulting phase diagram for the (quasi-)two-dimensional Hubbard model exhibits antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity. Furthermore, a uniform charge instability, i.e., phase separation, is obtained in the low doping regime around the Mott insulator. We also examine spin/charge density wave fluctuations …
We study the competition of antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity at zero-temperature in the two-dimensional Hubbard model using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory. The interplay between the two phases depends strongly on the strength of the correlation. At strong coupling ($ U \ge 8t$) the two phases do not mix, and a first-order transition takes place as a function of doping between two pure phases. At weak-coupling ($U \le 8t$) the two order parameters coexist within the same solution in a range of doping and the system smoothly evolves from the antiferromagnet to the supercondu…
As a prototype model of antiferromagnetism, we propose a repulsive Hubbard Hamiltonian defined on a graph $Ł={\cal A}\cup{\cal B}$ with ${\cal A}\cap {\cal B}=\emptyset$ and bonds connecting any element of ${\cal A}$ with all the elements of ${\cal B}$. Since all the hopping matrix elements associated with each bond are equal, the model is invariant under an arbitrary permutation of the ${\cal A}$-sites and/or of the ${\cal B}$-sites. This is the Hubbard model defined on the so called $(N_{A},N_{B})$-complete-bipartite graph, $N_{A}$ ($N_{B}$) being the number of elements in ${\cal A}$ (${\cal…
In order to study an interplay of disorder, correlation, and spin imbalance on antiferromagnetism, we systematically explore the ground state of one-dimensional spin-imbalanced Anderson-Hubbard model by using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We find that disorders localize the antiferromagnetic spin density wave induced by imbalanced fermions and the increase of the disorder magnitude shrinks the areas of the localized antiferromagnetized regions. Moreover, the antiferromagnetism finally disappears above a large disorder. These behaviors are observable in atomic Fermi gases loa…
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard model based on the optimization variational Monte Carlo method. We use a wave function that is an off-diagonal type given as $ψ=\exp(-λK)P_Gψ_0$, where $ψ_0$ is a one-particle state, $P_G$ is the Gutzwiller operator, $K$ is the kinetic operator, and $λ$ is a variational parameter. The many-body effect plays an important role as an origin of spin correlation and superconductivity in correlated electron systems. We examine the competition between the antiferromagnetic state and superconducting state by varying the Coulo…
We employ the functional renormalization group to investigate the phase diagram of the $t-t'$ Hubbard model on the square lattice with finite chemical potential $μ$ at zero temperature. A unified scheme to derive flow equations in the symmetric and symmetry broken regimes allows a consistent continuation of the renormalization flow in the symmetry broken regimes. At the transition from the symmetric regime to the symmetry broken regimes, our calculation reveals leading instabilities in the d-wave superconducting and antiferromagnetic channels. Furthermore, we find a first order transition betw…
The semimetal to antiferromagnet quantum phase transition of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice has come to the forefront in the context of the proposal that a semimetal to spin liquid transition can occur before the transition to the antiferromagnetic phase. To study the semimetal to antiferromagnet transition, we generalize the two-particle self-consistent (TPSC) approach to the honeycomb lattice (a structure that can be realized in graphene for example). We show that the critical interaction strength where the transition occurs is $U_c/t=3.79\pm 0.01$ quite close to the value $U_c/t…
The interplay between thermal and quantum fluctuations controls the competition between phases of matter in strongly correlated electron systems. We study finite-temperature properties of the strongly coupled two-dimensional doped Hubbard model using the minimally-entangled typical thermal states (METTS) method on width $4$ cylinders. We discover that a phase characterized by commensurate short-range antiferromagnetic correlations and no charge ordering occurs at temperatures above the half-filled stripe phase extending to zero temperature. The transition from the antiferromagnetic phase to th…
We recently unveiled that antiferromagnetism (AFM) order can be dominantly induced by the bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which is beyond the conventional wisdom that AFM order is usually driven by strong Coulomb interactions. Nevertheless, many aspects of the interplay between EPC and strong electronic interactions on AFM ordering remains unexplored. Here, we investigate the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard (SSHH) model with bond SSH phonons and onsite Hubbard interactions by large-scale quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations and obtain its ground-state phase diagra…
The ground state for the half-filled $t-t'$ Hubbard model is treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation and the slave boson approach including correlations. The criterium for the metal-insulator transition in the Slater scenario is formulated using an analytical free-energy expansion in the next-nearest-neighbor transfer integral $t'$ and in direct antiferromagnetic gap $Δ$. The correlation effects are generally demonstrated to favor the first-order transition. For a square lattice with a strong van Hove singularity, accidental close degeneracy of antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases i…
Using a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) we map out the magnetic phase diagram of the anisotropic square lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor intrachain $t$ and interchain $t_{\perp}$ hopping amplitudes at half-filling. A fixed value of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'=-t_{\perp}/2$ removes the nesting property of the Fermi surface and stabilizes a paramagnetic metal phase in the weak-coupling regime. In the isotropic and moderately anisotropic regions, a growing spin entropy in the metal phase is quenched out at a critical interaction strength by the on…
We perform large scale projector determinant quantum Monte-Carlo simulations to study the insulating states of the half-filled SU(6) Hubbard model on the square lattice. The transition from the antiferromagnetic state to the valence bond solid state occurs as increasing the Hubbard $U$. In contrast, in the SU(2) and SU(4) cases antiferromagnetism persists throughout the entire interaction range. In the SU(6) case, antiferromagnetism starts to develop in the weak interacting regime based on the Slater mechanism of Fermi surface nesting. As $U$ passes a crossover value $U^*/t\approx 9$, the sing…
Using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, functional renormalization group calculations and mean-field theory, we study the Hubbard model on the Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayer at half-filling as a model system for bilayer graphene. The free bands consisting of two Fermi points with quadratic dispersions lead to a finite density of states at the Fermi level, which triggers an antiferromagnetic instability that spontaneously breaks sublattice and spin rotational symmetry once local Coulomb repulsions are introduced. Our results reveal an inhomogeneous participation of the spin mo…
By ab initio many-body quantum chemistry calculations, we determine the strength of the symmetric anisotropy in the 5$d^5$ j $\approx$ 1/2 layered material Ba$_2$IrO$_4$. While the calculated anisotropic couplings come out in the range of a few meV, orders of magnitude stronger than in analogous 3d transition-metal compounds, the Heisenberg superexchange still defines the largest energy scale. The ab initio results reveal that individual layers of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ provide a close realization of the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg-compass model on the square lattice. We show that the experimentally ob…
In this work I investigate a two-band Hubbard model using the Gutzwiller wavefunction. The tight-binding part of the model was constructed to have a gapless spin-density wave state which leads to Dirac points in the bandstructure, a common feature of many iron-pnictide compounds. For quarter, half and three-quarter fillings I show that the Hund's rule coupling has a large impact on the metal-insulator transition in the paramagnetic phase. For the half-filled model in the antiferromagnetic phase, the magnetism evolves in a Stoner-like behavior and the size of the ordered moment is mainly determ…
The cluster slave-spin method is introduced to systematically investigate the solutions of the Hubbard model including the symmetry-broken phases. In this method, the electron operator is factorized into a fermioninc spinon describing the physical spin and a slave-spin describing the charge fluctuations. Following the $U(1)$ formalism derived by Yu and Si [Phys. Rev. B 86, 085104 (2012)], it is shown that the self-consistent equations to explore various symmetry-broken density wave states can be constructed in general with a cluster of multiple slave-spin sites. We employ this method to study …
We propose the mechanism for the magnetic-field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) state in a two-dimensional Hubbard model in the vicinity of the AFM quantum critical point (QCP), using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation by taking the Zeeman energy due to the magnetic field $B$ into account. In the vicinity of the QCP, we find that the AFM correlation perpendicular to $B$ is enhanced, whereas that parallel to $B$ is reduced. This fact means that the finite magnetic field increases $T_N$, with the AFM order perpendicular to $B$. The increment in $T_N$ can be understood in terms of the …
Interplay between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity is studied by using the 3-dimensional nearly half-filled Hubbard model with anisotropic transfer matrices $t_{\rm z}$ and $t_{\perp}$. The phase diagrams are calculated for varying values of the ratio $r_{\rm z}=t_{\rm z}/t_{\perp}$ using the spin fluctuation theory within the fluctuation-exchange approximation. The antiferromagnetic phase around the half-filled electron density expands while the neighboring phase of the anisotropic $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductivity shrinks with increasing $r_{\rm z}$. For small $r_{\rm z}$ $T_{…
We show that the motion of a single hole in the infinite $U$ Hubbard model with frustrated hopping leads to weak metallic antiferromagnetism of kinetic origin. An intimate relationship is demonstrated between the simplest versions of this problem in 1 and 2 dimensions, and two of the most subtle many body problems, namely the Heisenberg Bethe ring in 1-d and the 2-dimensional triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet.
We study the Mott transition, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in layered organic conductors using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory for the frustrated Hubbard model. A d-wave superconducting phase appears between an antiferromagnetic insulator and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t=0.3-0.7 $, or between a nonmagnetic Mott insulator (spin liquid) and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t\geq 0.8$, in agreement with experiments on layered organic conductors including $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$. These phases are separated by a strong first order transition. The phase diagram gives much insight into …
As a prototype model of antiferromagnetism, we propose a repulsive Hubbard Hamiltonian defined on a graph $Ł={\cal A}\cup{\cal B}$ with ${\cal A}\cap {\cal B}=\emptyset$ and bonds connecting any element of ${\cal A}$ with all the elements of ${\cal B}$.
We study quantum antiferromagnets on two-dimensional bipartite lattices. We focus on local variations in the properties of the ordered phase which arise due to the presence of inequivalent sites or bonds in the lattice structure, using linear spin wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo methods. Our primary finding is that sites with a high coordination tend to have a low ordered moment, at odds with the simple intuition of high coordination favoring more robust Neel ordering. The lattices considered are the dice lattice, which is dual to the kagome, the CaVO lattice, an Archimedean lattice with t…
We present a cluster dynamical mean-field treatment of the Hubbard model on a square lattice to study the evolution of magnetism and quasiparticle properties as the electron filling and interaction strength are varied. Our approach for solving the dynamical mean-field equations is an extension of Potthoff's "two-site" method [Phys. Rev. B. 64, 165114 (2001)] where the self-consistent bath is represented by a highly restricted set of states. As well as the expected antiferromagnetism close to half filling, we observe distortions of the Fermi surface. The proximity of a van Hove point and the in…
We perform exact numeric calculations for the two-orbital Hubbard model on the four-site cluster. In the limit of large on-site coupling the model becomes equivalent to the spin $S=1$ Heisenberg model. By comparing energy spectra of these two models, we quantified the range of interaction parameters for which the Heisenberg model satisfactorily reproduces the two-orbital Hubbard model. Then we examined how the spectrum evolves when we are outside of this region, focusing especially on checking of how it is modified when various ways of interatomic hoppings of electrons between different orbita…
Direct analytic continuation of the self energy is used to determine the effect of antiferromagnetic ordering on the spectral function and optical conductivity of a Mott insulator. Comparison of several methods shows that the most robust estimation of the gap value is obtained by use of the real part of the continued self energy in the quasiparticle equation within the single-site dynamical mean field theory of the two dimensional square lattice Hubbard model, where for U slightly greater than the Mott critical value, antiferromagnetism increases the gap by about 80%.
We investigate superconducting order in the extended Hubbard model on the two-dimensional graphene lattice using the variational cluster approximation (VCA) with an exact diagonalization solver at zero temperature. Building on the results of Ref.$[1]$, which identified triplet $p$- and $p+ip$-wave superconductivity as the most favored pairing symmetries in that model, we place uniform SC solutions in competition with the proposed nonuniform Kekulé ($p+ip$-K) superconducting pattern proposed in Ref.$[2]$. We find that the $p+ip$-K solution is in fact the most favored pairing in most of the phas…
We study the infinite U Hubbard model with one hole doped away half-filling, in triangular and square lattices with frustrated hoppings that invalidate Nagaoka's theorem, by means of the density matrix renormalization group. We find that these kinetically frustrated models have antiferromagnetic ground states with classical local magnetization in the thermodynamic limit. We identify the mechanism of this kinetic antiferromagnetism with the release of the kinetic energy frustration as the hole moves in the established antiferromagnetic background. This release can occurs in two different ways: …
We analyze the phases of an S=1/2 spin model on a lattice of coupled tetrahedra. The presence of both Heisenberg and antisymmetric, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions can lead to two types of symmetry-broken states: non-magnetic dimer order and, unexpectedly, exotic 4 sub-lattice weak antiferromagnetic order - a state with a generically small ordered moment and non-zero chirality. External magnetic field also induces weak antiferromagnetism co-existing with strong dimer correlations in the ground state. These states are formed as a result of broken Ising symmetries and exhibit a number of unusu…
We report on a new electromagnetic phenomenon that emerges in Mott insulators, i.e., materials that do not conduct electricity because of strong electronic Coulomb repulsion. The phenomenon manifests as antiferromagnetic ordering due to orbital electric currents which are spontaneously generated from the coupling between spin currents and an external homogenous magnetic field. This novel spin-charge current effect provides the mechanism to detect the so far elusive spin currents by means of unpolarized neutron scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance or muon spectroscopy. We illustrate this mech…
We study the effects of charge degrees of freedom on the spin excitation dynamics in quasi-one dimensional magnetic materials. Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the Hubbard model at half electronic filling on a chain and on a ladder geometry, and compare the results with those obtained using the Heisenberg model, where charge degrees of freedom are considered frozen. For both chains and two-leg ladders, we find that the Hubbard model spectrum qualitatively resembles the Heisenberg spectrum -- with low-energy peaks resembl…
We analyze the interplay of antiferromagnetism and pairing in the two dimensional Hubbard model with a moderate repulsive interaction. Coupled charge, magnetic and pairing fluctuations above the energy scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking are treated by a functional renormalization group flow, while the formation of gaps and order below that scale is treated in mean-field theory. The full frequency dependences of interaction vertices and gap functions is taken into account. We compute the magnetic and pairing gap functions as a function of doping $p$ and compare with results from a static ap…
By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the interplay between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in the two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model. Here, the ground-state phase diagram is triggered by several energy scales, i.e., the electron hopping $t$, the on-site electron-electron interaction $U$, the phonon energy $ω_0$, and the electron-phonon coupling $g$. At half filling, the ground state is an antiferromagnetic insulator for $U \gtrsim 2g^2/ω_0$, while it is a charge-density-wave (or bi-polaronic) insulator for $U \lesssim 2g^…
The problem of finding of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic "symmetry broken" solutions of the correlated lattice fermion models beyond the mean-field approximation has been investigated. The calculation of the quasiparticle excitation spectra with damping for the single- and multi-orbital Hubbard model has been performed in the framework of the equation- of-motion method for two-time temperature Green's Functions within a non-perturbative approach. A unified scheme for the construction of Generalized Mean Fields (elastic scattering corrections) and self-energy (inelastic scattering) in …
Recent optical second-harmonic generation experiments observed unexpected broken spatial symmetries in the undoped spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, leading to intensive debates on the nature of its ground state. We propose that it is a canted antiferromagnetism with a hidden order of circulating staggered pseudospin current. Symmetry analysis shows that a proper $c$-axis stacking of the canted antiferromagnetism and the pseudospin current lead to a magnetoelectric coexistence state that breaks the two-fold rotation, inversion, and time-reversal symmetries, consistent with experimental …
We investigate the impact of site dilution by setting the on-site repulsion strength ($U$) to zero at a fraction of sites in the half-filled Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice. We employ a semi-classical Monte-Carlo approach first to recover the zero dilution (undiluted $x=1$) properties, including $U$ dependence of insulator to metal crossover temperature scale $T^*$ and long-range staggered antiferromagnetic ordering temperature ($T_N$). For the non-perturbative regime of $U \sim$ bandwidth, we find a rapid suppression of $T^*$ with reducing $x$ from 1 to 0.7. However, $T_N$ remains unc…
A novel magnetic ground state is reported for the Hubbard Hamiltonian in strained graphene. When the chemical potential lies close to the Dirac point, the ground state exhibits locally both the Néel and ferromagnetic orders, even for weak Hubbard interaction. Whereas the Néel order parameter remains of the same sign in the entire system, the magnetization at the boundary takes the opposite sign from the bulk. The total magnetization this way vanishes, and the magnetic ground state is globally only an antiferromagnet. This peculiar ordering stems from the nature of the strain-induced single par…
We study the interplay between Néel-antiferromagnetism and the paramagnetic metal-insulator-transition (PMIT) on a Bethe lattice with nearest and next-nearest eighbor hopping $t_1$ and $t_2$. We concentrate in this paper on the situation at half-filling. For $t_2/t_1\to 1$ the PMIT outgrows the antiferromagnetic phase and shows a scenario similar to V$_2$O$_3$. In this parameter regime we also observe a novel magnetic phase.
In this review we recapitulate the basic features of the flat-band spin systems and briefly summarize earlier studies in the field. Main emphasis is made on recent developments which include results for both spin and electron flat-band models. In particular, for flat-band spin systems we highlight field-driven phase transitions for frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets at low temperatures, chiral flat-band states, as well as the effect of a slight dispersion of a previously strictly flat band due to nonideal lattice geometry. For electronic systems, we discuss the universal low-temper…
