MgB2 is a promising superconductor for important large-scale applications for both high field magnets and cryocooler-cooled magnet operated at temperatures around 20 K. In this work, by utilizing C60 as a viable alternative dopant, we demonstrate a simple and industrially scaleable rout that yields a 10-15-fold improvement in the in-high-field current densities of MgB2 tape conductors. For example, a Jc value higher than 4x10^4 A/cm^2 (4.2 K, 10 T), which exceeds that for NbTi superconductor, can be realized on the C60 doped MgB2 tapes. It is worth noting that this value is even higher than that fabricated using strict high energy ball milling technique under Ar atmosphere. At 20 K, Hirr was about 10 T for C60 doped MgB2 tapes. A large amount of nanometer-sized precipitates and grain boundaries were found in MgB2 matrix. The special physical and chemical characteristic of C60, in addition to its C containing intrinsic essence, is a key point in enhancing the superconducting performance of MgB2 tapes.
Copper sheath is the first choice for manufacturing high-Tc superconducting wires and tapes because of its high electrical and thermal conductivities, low cost and good mechanical properties. However, Cu can easily react with superconducting cores, such as BSCCO, MgB2 and pnictides, during high-temperature sintering process and therefore drastically decrease the transport Jc. Here, we report the fabrication of Cu-sheathed Sr1-xKxFe2As2 tapes with superior Jc performance using a simple hot pressing method that is capable of eliminating the lengthy high-temperature sintering required by conventi…
In this work we present a modeling tool designed to estimate the hysteretic losses in the coils of an electric generator with coils made of coated conductor tapes during transient operation. The model is based on a two-stage segregated model approach that allows simulating the electric generator and the current distribution in the superconducting coils using a one-way coupling from the generator to the HTS coils model. The model has two inputs: the rotational speed and the electric load signal. A homogeneous anisotropic bulk model for the coils allows computing the current distribution in the …
Numerical models are powerful tools to predict the electromagnetic behavior of superconductors. In recent years, a variety of models have been successfully developed to simulate high-temperature-superconducting (HTS) coated conductor tapes. While the models work well for the simulation of individual tapes or relatively small assemblies, their direct applicability to devices involving hundreds or thousands of tapes, as for example coils used in electrical machines, is questionable. Indeed the simulation time and memory requirement can quickly become prohibitive. In this article, we develop and …
Many superconducting power applications contain REBCO coils. Superconducting motors are very interesting for mobile applications like aviation, thanks to their high power per unit weight. In order to reduce the inductance, multi-tape conductors are often used in windings but parallel tapes present coupling AC loss. In this article, we analyze the AC loss of single coils and a full stator of a motor made of windings of parallel tapes, taking several coupling situations into account. Our computer modeling method combines self-programmed and commercial finite-element methods to calculate the curr…
In this paper we develop a method based on the critical state for calculating the current and field distributions and the AC losses in a cable made of curved thin superconducting tapes. The method also includes the possibility of considering spatial variation of the critical current density, which may be the result of the manufacturing process. For example, rare-earth based coated conductors are known to have a decrease of the transport properties in near the edges of the tape: this influences the way current and field penetrate in the sample and, consequently, the AC losses. We demonstrate th…
We analyze fundamental issues related to the thermal and electrical stability of a coated conductor during its operation. We address the role of conductive buffer layers in the stability of Ni-based coated conductors, and the effect of a metallic cap layer on the electrical properties of Ni alloy-based superconducting tapes. For the first case we report on the fabrication of a fully conductive RABiTS architecture formed of bilayers of conductive oxides SrRuO3 and LaNiO3 on textured Ni tapes. For the second case we discuss measurements of current-voltage relations on Ag/YBa2Cu3O7-d and Cu/Ag/ Y…
This paper presents a study of the thermal transport properties of MgB$_2$ tapes differing in architecture, stabilization and constituent materials. The temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity, $κ(T,B)$, was investigated both along the conductor and in the direction perpendicular to the tape. These data provide fundamental input parameters to describe the 3D heat diffusion process in a winding. Thermal transport properties - even in field - are typically deduced using semi-empirical formulas based on the residual resistivity ratio of the stabilizer measured in absence of magne…
Iron-based superconductors have been considered to be very promising in high-field applications, for which multifilamentary wire and tape conductors with high mechanical strength are essential. In this work, 7-,19- and 114-filament Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) superconducting wires and tapes with silver as matrix and iron as outer reinforcing sheath were produced by the ex situ powder-in-tube method. The mass densities of Sr-122 phase in 7- and 19-filament conductors were investigated by microhardness characterization, which revealed a positive correlation between hardness and transport critical c…
Most applications of superconductors, such as power transmission lines, motors, generators, and transformers, require long cables through which large currents circulate. Impressive progress has recently been achieved in the current-carrying capability in conductors based on high-temperature superconductors. Coated conductors are likely the best examples, consisting of very good quality thin layers of YBCO superconductor grown on top of a metallic tape with some intermediate layers. However, there is an important problem for achieving large currents: a large decrease in transport critical-curre…
We investigated the effect of nanoscale-C doping on the critical current density Jc and irreversibility field Birr of Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes prepared by the in-situ powder-in-tube method. The tapes were heat treated at 600-950C for 1 h. Higher values of Jc and Birr were seen for 5 at.%C-doped MgB2 tapes at higher sintering temperatures, where substantial substitution of boron for carbon occurred. The C-doped samples sintered at 950C showed the highest Birr, for example, at 4.2 K, the Birr reached 22.9 T. In particular, at 20 K, Birr for the C-doped tape achieved 9 T, which is comparable to the…
122 type pnictide superconductors are of particular interest for high-field applications because of their large upper critical fields Hc2 (> 100 T), low Hc2 anisotropy r (< 2), and high thin-film critical current densities Jc (> 1 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K). Successful magnet applications require fabrication of polycrystalline superconducting wires that exhibit large in-field Jc, which is limited by poor grain coupling and weak-link behavior at grain boundaries. Here we report our recent achievement in the developing Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes with transport Jc up to 0.1 MA/cm2 at 10 T and 4.2 K. This value …
The critical currents of MOD/RABiTS and PLD/IBAD coated conductors have been measured as a function of magnetic field orientation and compared to films grown on single crystal substrates. By varying the orientation of magnetic field applied in the plane of the film, we are able to determine the extent to which current flow in each type of conductor is percolative. Standard MOD/RABiTS conductors have also been compared to samples whose grain boundaries have been doped by diffusing Ca from an overlayer. We find that undoped MOD/RABiTS tapes have a less anisotropic in-plane field dependence than …
The MgB2 coated superconducting tapes have been fabricated on textured Cu (0 0 1) and polycrystalline Hastelloy tapes using coated conductor technique, which has been developed for the second generation high temperature superconducting wires. The MgB2/Cu tapes were fabricated over a wide temperature range of 460-520 °C by using hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) technique. The tapes exhibited the critical temperatures (Tc) ranging between 36 and 38 K with superconducting transition width (\DeltaTc) of about 0.3-0.6 K. The highest critical current density (Jc) of 1.34 \times 105 …
In the last 10-15 years, the most common strategy in the development of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cable for magnets has been to imitate Low Temperature Superconducting (LTS) cable designs. However, requirements for LTS materials are not valid for HTS materials, which are extremely stable. For example, non-twisted multifilamentary Bi-2223 tapes have been successfully used in several magnets. This paper review stability and analyse inductance and AC losses in non-twisted stack of HTS tapes. Numerical calculations show that twisting has negligible effect on inductance variations in a…
The high upper critical field characteristic of the recently discovered iron-based superconducting chalcogenides opens the possibility of developing a new type of non-oxide high-field superconducting wires. In this work, we utilize a buffered metal template on which we grow a textured FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ layer, an approach developed originally for high temperature superconducting coated conductors. These tapes carry high critical current densities (>1$\times10^{4}$A/cm$^{2}$) at about 4.2K under magnetic field as high as 25 T, which are nearly isotropic to the field direction. This demonstr…
We report on significant flux pinning enhancement in MgB2/Fe tapes that has been easily obtained by a simple and cheap route using acetone as both an efficient ball-milling medium and liquid additive through the in situ method. Results showed that the highly reactive C released from the decomposition of the acetone substituted into B sites, accompanied by the grain refinement effect due to the acetone doping. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc for the 5 wt % acetone doped tapes sintered at 700C reached up to 2.4x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T, which is even higher than that of the nano-C added samples heated at …
The use of REBCO coated conductors is envisaged for many applications, extending from power cables to high-field magnets. Whatever the case, thermal properties of REBCO tapes play a key role for the stability of superconducting devices. In this work, we present the first study on the longitudinal thermal conductivity ($κ$) of REBCO coated conductors in magnetic fields up to 19 T applied both parallelly and perpendicularly to the thermal-current direction. Copper-stabilized tapes from six industrial manufacturers have been investigated. We show that zero-field $κ$ of coated conductors can be ca…
REBCO coated conductors (CCs) have the potential to widen considerably the application areas of superconductivity. Quench protection of REBCO-based devices represents one of the major obstacles to this expansion. Thermal conductivity data are mandatory ingredients for quench simulation studies. In particular, the transverse thermal conductivity ($κ_T$) of the CC plays a key role in case of quenches in superconducting magnets. In the present work, we report $κ_T$ of thermally stabilized REBCO CCs produced by different manufacturers. We have measured $κ_T$ on single CCs rather than on stacks of …
BaZrO3 (BZO) nanorods are now incorporated into production IBAD-MOCVD coated conductors. Here we compare several examples of both BZO-free and BZO-containing coated conductors using critical current (Ic) characterizations at 4.2 K over their full angular range up to fields of 31 T. We find that BZO nanorods do not produce any c-axis distortion of the critical current density Jc(theta) curve at 4.2 K at any field, but also that pinning is nevertheless strongly enhanced compared to the non-BZO conductors. We also find that the tendency of the ab-plane Jc(theta) peak to become cusp-like is modera…
This book chapter reviews the current status of Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) for coated conductor applications of YBCO on metallic tapes. Clearly, PLD is one of the most promising techniques - particularly for thick films - and has led to some of the highest critical currents Jc. The reputation of PLD as being an expensive technique for manufacturing is carefully addressed by calculating the laser operation cost per length of tape. It is shown that the expenses related to the ownership and operation of an industrial excimer laser (including, most importantly, laser tubes and window sets) cont…
The conductor on round core (CORC) cable is one of the major high temperature superconductor cable concepts combining scalability, flexibility, mechanical strength, ease of fabrication and high current density; making it a possible candidate as conductor for large, high field magnets. To simulate the boundary conditions of such magnets as well as the temperature dependence of CORC cables a 1.16 m long sample consisting of 15, 4 mm wide SuperPower REBCO tapes was characterized using the 'FBI' (force-field-current) superconductor test facility. In a five step investigation, the CORC cable's perf…
The Powder-In-Tube process has been employed to fabricate tape-like conductors with a strong metallic sheath and based on the newly discovered MgB2 superconducting phase. Long superconducting tapes have been prepared by packing reacted MgB2 powders inside pure Ag, Cu and Ni tubes which are then cold worked by drawing and rolling. Such tapes have shown transport properties as good as bulk MgB2 samples sintered in high pressure and high temperature conditions. At 4.2 K, the highest critical current density of 100000 A/cm2 has been achieved on Nickel-sheathed single-filament conductors. A direct …
It is shown that the critical currents of high-Tc superconducting tapes fabricated by the coated conductor technologies are enhanced considerably if grain arrangements with large effective grain boundary areas are used. Increasing the aspect ratios of the grains reduces the deleterious effects of the grain boundaries. A practical road to competitive high-Tc cables is proposed.
In this contribution, different concepts for mechanically reinforced MgB2 wires with high transport currents are presented and characterised. It is shown that the achieved critical transport currents depend strongly on the conductor concept, the choice of the precursor route and the applied treatment method.
Rare-earth-barium-copper-oxide (REBCO) tapes are now available from several industrial manufacturers and are very promising conductors in high field applications. Due to diverging materials and deposition processes, these manufacturers' tapes can be expected to differ in their electro-mechanical and mechanical properties. For magnets designers, these are together with the conductors' in-field critical current performance of the highest importance in choosing a suitable conductor. In this work, the strain and stress dependence of the current carrying capabilities as well as the stress and strai…
Among the recently discovered Fe-based superconducting compounds, the (K,Ba)Fe2As2 phase is attracting large interest within the scientific community interested in conductor developments. In fact, after some years of development, critical current densities Jc of about 105 A/cm2 at fields up to more than 10 T have been obtained in powder in tube (PIT) processed wires and tapes. Here we explore the crucial points in the wire/tape fabrication by means of the ex-situ PIT method. We focus on scaling up processes which are crucial for the industrial fabrication. We analyzed the effects on the micros…
The current density and field distributions in polygonally arranged thin superconducting tapes carrying AC current are derived under the assumption of the critical state model. Starting from the generic Biot-Savart law for a general polygonal geometry, we derive a suitable integral equation for the calculation of the current density and magnetic field in each tape. The model works for any transport current below $I_c$, which makes it attractive for studying cases of practical interest, particularly the dependence of AC losses on parameters such as the number of tapes, their distance from the c…
Various commercial coated conductors were irradiated with fast neutrons in order to introduce randomly distributed, uncorrelated defects which increase the critical current density, Jc, in a wide temperature and field range. The Jc-anisotropy is significantly reduced and the angular dependence of Jc does not obey the anisotropic scaling approach. These defects enhance the irreversibility line in not fully optimized tapes, but they do not in state-of-the-art conductors. Neutron irradiation provides a clear distinction between the low field region, where Jc is limited by the grain boundaries, an…
Striating HTS coated conductor (CC) tapes into narrow filaments offers the possibility of reducing the tapes' magnetization losses without unreasonably decreasing their current-carrying capability. However, realizing well-separated striations presents technological challenges, especially if the number of filaments is large and/or if a thick layer of metallic stabilizer is present. In these situations, the filaments can be easily coupled and their effectiveness to reduce magnetization losses is strongly diminished or eliminated. While the onset of coupling is well visible from magnetization los…
Improving transport current has been the primary issue for practical application of superconducting wires and tapes. However, the porous nature of powder-in-tube (PIT) processed iron-based superconducting tapes is thought to be one of the important reasons for the low Jc values. In this work, the superconducting core density of ex-situ Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes was significantly improved by employing a simple hot pressing as an alternative route for final sintering. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc values showed excellent values of 5.1x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T and 4.3x10^4 A/cm^2 at 14 T, respectively, which…
Development of REBCO cables that carry high electrical current in high magnetic field is crucial for future large-scale magnet applications. This experimental work presents the critical current measurements of two different REBCO cables by a test facility at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL). The simple-stacked cable is made by the NHMFL by stacking 21 REBCO tapes without soldering. The Conductor-on-Round-Core (CORC) cable provided by Advanced Conductor Technologies has 21 layers of REBCO tapes with 2 tapes/layer. The test facility consists of a 12 T split solenoid magnet wit…
Conventional powder-in-tube (PIT) method has been the most effective technique for fabricating iron-based superconducting wires and tapes. Tremendous advances have been made during the last few years, especially for 122 family pnictide tapes. Here we review some of the most recent and significant developments in making high-performance iron-based tapes by the ex-situ PIT process, paying particular attention to several fabrication techniques to realize high-field Jc performance in terms of increase of core density and improvement of texture. At 4.2 K, the practical level transport Jc up to 0.12…
Roebel cables and superconducting tape coils are often modeled as stacks of parallel superconducting tapes carrying the same transport current. We solved, in the infinitely thin approximation, the transport current and magnetization problems for such stacks using an efficient numerical scheme based on a variational formulation of the Kim critical-state model. We also refined the anisotropic bulk approximation, introduced by Clem et al. in order to simplify AC loss estimates for densely packed stacks of many tapes; this was achieved by removing the simplifying assumptions on the current sheet d…
The possibility of a substantial reduction of weight and size of electrical generators is the main incentive behind the effort to develop superconducting armature windings based on coated conductors in the form of wide tapes with large aspect ratio. The main obstacle to the application of coated superconductors in stator windings is the large losses incurred due to the ac magnetic field produced by the rotor's dc coils of the field windings. In the range of frequencies typical for aircraft generators, the hysteretic losses in wide tapes are unacceptably high. They can be reduced by dividing th…
This paper presents the alternating current (AC) loss analysis on high-temperature superconductor (HTS) Cross-Conductor (CroCo) cables, in order to evaluate whether they could be utilized for electrical power transmission. The modeling of HTS CroCo cables was based on a cable assembled at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the AC loss calculation was based on the H-formulation model implemented in the finite-element method (FEM) software package COMSOL Multiphysics. The AC loss calculations have been carried out for isolated single-phase CroCo cable and three-phase CroCo cables. T…
We present the results of numerical analysis of a model of normal zone propagation in coated conductors. The main emphasis is on the effects of increased contact resistance between the superconducting film and the stabilizer on the speed of normal zone propagation, the maximum temperature rise inside the normal zone, and the stability margins. We show that with increasing contact resistance the speed of normal zone propagation increases, the maximum temperature inside the normal zone decreases, and stability margins shrink. This may have an overall beneficial effect on quench protection qualit…
High-temperature superconductors (HTS) are finding use as high - current wires for potential application in power devices. The dependence of their basal-plane critical current properties on orientation in a magnetic field can pose important design problems. Here we report material and operating parameter conditions where prototype HTS tape conductors exhibit critical current characteristics that are essentially field-orientation independent. The novel phenomenon is observed for specific magnetic field intensities that depend on the operating temperature, and in materials having strong flux pin…
High-performance Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) tapes have been successfully fabricated using hot pressing (HP) process. The effect of HP temperatures (850-925 C) on the c-axis texture, resistivity, Vickers micro-hardness, microstructure and critical current properties has been systematically studied. Taking advantage of high degree of c-axis texture, well grain connectivity and and large concentration of strong-pinning defects, we are able to obtain an excellent Jc of 1.2x10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K and 10 T for Sr-122 tapes. More importantly, the field dependence of Jc turns out to be very weak, such tha…
The high upper critical field and low anisotropy of iron-based superconductors make them being particularly attractive for high-field applications. However, the current carrying capability needs to be enhanced by overcoming the weak-link effect between misaligned grains inside wire and tape conductors. Here we demonstrate a high transport critical current density (Jc) reaching 1.5x10^5 A/cm^2 (Ic = 437 A) at 4.2 K and 10 T in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Ba-122) tapes prepared by a combination of conventional powder-in-tube method and optimized hot-press technique. The transport Jc measured at 4.2 K under…
The Twisted Stacked-Tape Cable (TSTC) is one of the major high temperature superconductor cable concepts combining scalability, ease of fabrication and high current density making it a possible candidate as conductor for large scale magnets. To simulate the boundary conditions of such a magnets as well as the temperature dependence of Twisted Stacked-Tape Cables a 1.16 m long sample consisting of 40, 4 mm wide SuperPower REBCO tapes is characterized using the "FBI" (force - field - current) superconductor test facility of the Institute for Technical Physics (ITEP) of the Karlsruhe Institute of…
Various applications of superconducting materials require accounting of anisotropy of the current-carrying capacity relative to magnetic field direction - Ic(θ). However, today there is no sufficiently comprehensive model that takes into account the anisotropy, therefore the angular dependences are usually not analysed, but only described using various mathematical formulas. As a result, the fitting parameters have no physical meaning and it is difficult to correlate the picture with the features of the microstructure. In this paper, we propose a method for analysing the critical current angul…
Different magnet applications require compact high current cables. Among the proposed solutions, the Twisted Stacked Tape Cable (TSTC) is easy to manufacture and has very high tape length usage efficiency. In this kind of cables the tapes are closely packed, so that their electromagnetic interaction is very strong and determines the overall performance of the cable. Numerical models are necessary tools to precisely evaluate this interaction and to predict the cable's behavior, e.g. in terms of effective critical current and magnetization currents. For this purpose, we developed a fully three-d…
The implementation of the 2nd generation high-Tc superconductors in power applications, such as electrical transformers, motors and generators requires superconducting wires that are superior to copper Litz wires at cryogenic temperatures in terms of losses in time-varying magnetic field, as well as in engineering current density. Another problem is to find a way to make practical coils and armatures out of flat tape-like conductors with low bending strain tolerance. We discuss several novel approaches to the construction of coils and armatures based specifically on the properties of coated co…
There are numerous potential applications for superconducting tapes, based on YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films coated onto metallic substrates. A long established goal of more than 15 years has been to understand the magnetic flux pinning mechanisms which allow films to maintain high current densities out to high magnetic fields. In fact, films carry 1-2 orders of magnitude higher current densities than any other form of the material. For this reason, the idea of further improving pinning has received little attention. Now that commercialisation of conductors is much closer, for both better performanc…
We demonstrate that 3.5-MeV oxygen irradiation can markedly enhance the in-field critical current of commercial 2nd generation superconducting tapes with an exposure time of just one second per 0.8 cm2. The speed demonstrated here is now at the level required for an industrial reel-to-reel post-processing. The irradiation is made on production line samples through the protective silver coating and does not require any modification of the growth process. From TEM imaging, we identify small clusters as the main source of increased vortex pinning.
Demanding microwave applications in a magnetic field require the material optimization not only in zero-field but, more important, in the in-field flux motion dominated regime. However, the effect of artificial pinning centers (APC) remains unclear at high frequency. Moreover, in coated conductors the evaluation of the high frequency material properties is difficult due to the complicated electromagnetic problem of a thin superconducting film on a buffered metal substrate. In this paper we present an experimental study at 48 GHz of 150-200 nm YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ coated conductors, with and …
The current-voltage (I-V) curve is the basic characteristic of a superconducting wire or tape. Measuring I-V curves is generally problematic when samples have poor stabilization. Soldering voltage taps to an active part of the conductor affects the effectiveness of the local cooling and/or can be difficult to do in certain devices such as fault current limiters and cables where the tapes are closely packed. In order to overcome these problems, voltage taps can be placed outside the active area of the superconductor. We proved both by simulations and experiments that this arrangement leads to t…
It is shown that, in a conductor carrying a moderate spin current, singlet pairing can still take place almost as effectively as without a spin current. The system will still be fully gapped for all spin-up and -down single-particle excitations, with no depaired electrons. All thermodynamic properties will be practically the same as without the spin current. All universality relations and laws of corresponding states found in the theory of Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer should remain valid. Thus a singlet-pairing superconductor can always carry a persistent and dissipation-less spin-current. …
A compact HTS cable that is able to carry large current density is crucial for developing high field accelerator magnets. We are reporting a novel HTS cable (named X-cable) that could achieve a high current density as the Roebel cable, but is implemented by in-plane bending stacked HTS tapes directly to realize the transposition. The cable is jointly developed with an industrial company on a production line: ready for large scale production from the beginning. Recently, a prototype cable with REBCO coated conductor has been successfully fabricated. Test results show no significant degradation,…
We investigate theoretically the dependence of magnetization loss of a helically wound superconducting tape on the round core radius $R$ and the helical conductor pitch in a ramped magnetic field. Using the thin-sheet approximation, we identify the two-dimensional equation that describes Faraday's law of induction on a helical tape surface in the steady state. Based on the obtained basic equation, we simulate numerically the current streamlines and the power loss $P$ per unit tape length on a helical tape. For $R \gtrsim w_0$ (where $w_0$ is the tape width), the simulated value of $P$ saturate…
The hysteretic ac loss of a current-carrying conductor in which multiple superconducting strips are polygonally arranged around a cylindrical former is theoretically investigated as a model of superconducting cables. Using the critical state model, we analytically derive the ac loss $Q_n$ of a total of $n$ strips. The normalized loss $Q_n/Q_1$ is determined by the number of strips $n$ and the ratio of the strip width $2w$ to the diameter $2R$ of the cylindrical former. When $n>> 1$ and $w/R<< 1$, the behavior of $Q_n$ is similar to that of an infinite array of coplanar strips.
Thin films of the iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (Ba122:P) were fabricated on polycrystalline metal-tape substrates with two kinds of in-plane grain boundary alignments (well aligned (4 deg.) and poorly aligned (8 deg.)) by pulsed laser deposition. The poorly aligned substrate is not applicable to cuprate-coated conductors because the in-plane alignment >4 deg. results in exponential decay of the critical current density (Jc). The Ba122:P film exhibited higher Jc at 4 K when grown on the poorly aligned substrate than on the well-aligned substrate even though the crystallinity was po…
Many applications, such as magnets and SMES, are usually charged and discharged under a bias DC current, which may increase the AC loss. For their design, it is necessary to understand and predict the AC loss. This article analises the AC loss in magnet-like coils under DC bias contribution super-imposed to the AC current. The analysis is based on a numerical model that takes the interaction between magnetization currents in all turns into account. The studied example is a stack of 32 pancake coils with 200 turns each made of thin tape, such as $Re$BCO coated conductor. We present the current …
High temperature superconductor (HTS) (RE)Ba2Cu3Ox (REBCO) conductor on round core cable (CORC) has high current carrying capacity for high field magnet and power applications. In REBCO CORC cables, current redistribution occurs among tapes through terminal contact resistances when a local quench occurs. Therefore, the quench behaviour of CORC cable is different from single tape situation, for it is significantly affected by terminal contact resistances. To better understand the underlying physical process of local quenches in CORC cables, a new 3D multi-physics modelling tool for CORC cables …
