High-performance Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) tapes have been successfully fabricated using hot pressing (HP) process. The effect of HP temperatures (850-925 C) on the c-axis texture, resistivity, Vickers micro-hardness, microstructure and critical current properties has been systematically studied. Taking advantage of high degree of c-axis texture, well grain connectivity and and large concentration of strong-pinning defects, we are able to obtain an excellent Jc of 1.2x10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K and 10 T for Sr-122 tapes. More importantly, the field dependence of Jc turns out to be very weak, such that in 14 T the Jc remains ~1.0x10^5 A/cm^2. These Jc values are the highest ever reported so far for iron-pnictide wires and tapes, achieving the level desired for practical applications. Our results clearly strengthen the position of iron-pnictide conductors as a competitor to the conventional and MgB2 superconductors for high field applications.
Superconducting joints are essential for iron-based superconductor's applications in future. In this study, a process for fabricating superconducting joints between Sr1-xKxFe2As2 (Sr-122) tapes is developed for the first time. The Ag sheath was peeled off from one side of each sample. The exposed superconducting parts of the two tapes were joined and wrapped again with Ag foil. The diffusion bonding of the iron-based superconducting joint was achieved by hot-pressing process in Argon atmosphere. The superconducting properties, microstructures and the elements distribution of the joint regions …
(Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires and tapes are fabricated by using hot isostatic pressing (HIP) technique, and their superconducting properties are studied. In the HIP round wire, transport critical current density (Jc) at 4.2 K has achieved record-high value of 175 kA/cm2 at zero field, and exceeds 20 kA/cm2 even at 100 kOe. Improvement of polycrystalline powder synthesis may play a key role for the enhancement of Jc. In the HIP tape, even larger transport Jc of 380 kA/cm2 is realized at zero field. Based on magnetization and magneto-optical measurements, possible further enhancement of Jc …
Improving transport current has been the primary issue for practical application of superconducting wires and tapes. However, the porous nature of powder-in-tube (PIT) processed iron-based superconducting tapes is thought to be one of the important reasons for the low Jc values. In this work, the superconducting core density of ex-situ Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes was significantly improved by employing a simple hot pressing as an alternative route for final sintering. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc values showed excellent values of 5.1x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T and 4.3x10^4 A/cm^2 at 14 T, respectively, which…
We found that transport critical current density (Jc) of the Ba1-xKxFe2As2/Ag tapes is significantly enhanced by the combination process of cold flat rolling and uniaxial pressing. At 4.2 K, the Jc reaches a high value of 9.1x104 A/cm2 in 4 T, which is almost the practical level of 105 A/cm2. The Jc-H curve shows extremely small magnetic field dependence and keeps a high value of 6.9x104 A/cm2 in 10 T. These are the highest values reported so far for iron based superconducting wires. We also show our successful attempts of the fabrication of multi-filamentary tapes. A high Jc value of 5.3x104 …
We comparatively studied the critical current density, magnetization and specific heat of the rolled and the hot-pressed Sr1-xKxFe2As2 tapes. The Schottky anomaly that is obvious in the specific heat of the rolled tape disappears in the hot-pressed tape. Moreover, the hot-pressed tape has a higher fraction of superconductivity and a narrower distribution of superconducting transition temperature than the rolled tape. Combined with the magnetization data, we conclude that sintering under high pressure provides a better environment for complete chemical reaction and more homogenous dopant distri…
We report that high transport critical current density exceeding 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T can be obtained with good reproducibility for Ag sheathed (Ba,K)Fe2As2 (Ba 122) tapes by modifying the ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method. The process involves cycles of the cold deformation and subsequent heat treatment. The intermediate cycles of flat rolling and heat treatment produce uniform fine-grained structure, resulting in an enhancement of transport Jc in applied magnetic fields. However, the rolled tapes contain cracks running traverse to the tape axis, which still limit the current pass al…
A trapped field of over 3 T has been measured at 17.5 K in a magnetised stack of two disc-shaped bulk MgB2 superconductors of diameter 25 mm and thickness 5.4 mm. The bulk MgB2 samples were fabricated by uniaxial hot pressing, which is a readily scalable, industrial technique, to 91% of their maximum theoretical density. The macroscopic critical current density derived from the trapped field data using the Biot-Savart law is consistent with the measured local critical current density. From this we conclude that critical current density, and therefore trapped field performance, is limited by th…
The microstructures of MgB2 wires prepared by the powder-in-tube technique and subsequent hot isostatic pressing were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. Large amount of crystalline defects including small angle twisting, tilting, and bending boundaries, in which high densities of dislocations reside, were found forming sub-grains within MgB2 grains. It is believed that these defects resulted from particle deformation during the hot isostatic pressing process and are effective flux pinning centers that contribute to the high critical current densities of the wires at high temp…
Copper sheath is the first choice for manufacturing high-Tc superconducting wires and tapes because of its high electrical and thermal conductivities, low cost and good mechanical properties. However, Cu can easily react with superconducting cores, such as BSCCO, MgB2 and pnictides, during high-temperature sintering process and therefore drastically decrease the transport Jc. Here, we report the fabrication of Cu-sheathed Sr1-xKxFe2As2 tapes with superior Jc performance using a simple hot pressing method that is capable of eliminating the lengthy high-temperature sintering required by conventi…
High temperature superconductor (HTS) (RE)Ba2Cu3Ox (REBCO) conductor on round core cable (CORC) has high current carrying capacity for high field magnet and power applications. In REBCO CORC cables, current redistribution occurs among tapes through terminal contact resistances when a local quench occurs. Therefore, the quench behaviour of CORC cable is different from single tape situation, for it is significantly affected by terminal contact resistances. To better understand the underlying physical process of local quenches in CORC cables, a new 3D multi-physics modelling tool for CORC cables …
The high upper critical field and low anisotropy of iron-based superconductors make them being particularly attractive for high-field applications. However, the current carrying capability needs to be enhanced by overcoming the weak-link effect between misaligned grains inside wire and tape conductors. Here we demonstrate a high transport critical current density (Jc) reaching 1.5x10^5 A/cm^2 (Ic = 437 A) at 4.2 K and 10 T in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Ba-122) tapes prepared by a combination of conventional powder-in-tube method and optimized hot-press technique. The transport Jc measured at 4.2 K under…
Nowadays the development of high-field magnets strongly relies on the performance of superconducting materials. Iron-based superconductors exhibit high upper critical fields and low electromagnetic anisotropy, making them particularly attractive for high-field applications, especially in particle accelerator magnets, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, medical magnetic resonance imaging systems and nuclear fusion reactors. Herein, through an industrially scalable and cost-effective manufacturing strategy, a practical level critical current density up to 1.1x10^5 A/cm2 at 4.2 K in an exte…
The critical current density (Jc) of hot isostatic pressed (HIPed) MgB2 wires, measured by d.c. transport and magnetization, is compared with that of similar wires annealed at ambient pressure. The HIPed wires have a higher Jc than the annealed wires, especially at high temperatures and magnetic fields, and higher irreversibility field (Hirr). The HIPed wires are promising for applications, with Jc>106 A/cm2 at 5 K and zero field and >104 A/cm2 at 1.5 T and 26.5 K, and Hirr ~ 17 T at 4 K. The improvement is attributed to a high density of structural defects, which are the likely source of vort…
Two different hot isostatic pressing cycles (HIPing) were investigated to synthesize bulk MgB2 samples: a "standard" cycle where a low vessel pressure is maintained while heating to the process temperature with a subsequent simultaneous pressure and temperature decrease and a new method - dense material cooling under pressure (DMCUP). The latter method allowed the synthesis of dense samples with diameters up to 20 mm and thicknesses up to 10 mm from commercial MgB2 powder. Optimal conditions for the DMCUP method with glass encapsulation (maximum pressure 200 MPa, maximum temperature 1000 C ove…
Based on DC magnetization measurements, the temperature dependencies of the trapped magnetic field have been calculated for two MgB2 samples prepared by two different techniques: the high-pressure sintering and the hot pressing. Experimentally measured trapped field values for the first sample coincide remarkably well with calculated ones in the whole temperature range. This proves, from one side, the validity of the introduced calculation approach, and demonstrates, from another side, the great prospects of the hot pressing technology for large scale superconducting applications of the MgB2.
Superconducting joints are one of the key technologies to make Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (Ba-122) superconducting wires or tapes for high-field applications. Herein, superconducting joints were fabricated by a simple cold-pressing method, and the joint resistance of the iron-based superconducting joint was estimated for the first time. The superconducting properties, microstructures, and elements distribution in the joint regions were investigated. At 4.2 K and 10 T, a transport critical current Ic of 105 A for the joint was obtained, and the critical current ratio (CCR= Ic-joint/Ic-tape) of the joint was…
Iron-pnictides are hotly studied since 2008 in the superconducting materials research area, due to their special properties and unclear mechanism. Big achievement has been made in the pnictide research during the past years. For practical uses, pnictide superconductor should be fabricated in a long wire form which can be used for different devices. In this work, 100 m class 7-core Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr122) tapes have been made using the powder-in-tube technique, which is reported for the first time. Clearly, an average Jc of 1.3x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T was reached over the 115 meter length, showing …
Bulk samples of MgB2 have been formed by hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) of commercial powder at 100MPa and 950=B0C. The resulting material is 100% dense with a sharp superconducting transition at 37.5K. Microstructural studies have indicated the presence of small amounts of second phases within the material, namely MgO and B rich compositions, probably MgB4. Magnetisation measurements performed at 20K have revealed values of Jc=1.3 x 106A/cm2 at zero field, and 9.3 x 105A/cm2 at 1T. Magneto optical (MO) studies have shown direct evidence for the superconducting homogeneity and strong intergr…
We demonstrate a large enhancement of critical current density (Jc) up to 1.0x10^7 A/cm2 at 5 K under self-field in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals by irradiating 320 MeV Au ions. With the very promising potential of this material in mind, we have fabricated a (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wire through a powder-in-tube method combined with the hot isostatic pressing technique, whose effectiveness has been proven in industrial Bi2223 tapes. The Jc in the wire at 4.2 K has reached 37 kA/cm2 under self-field and 3.0 kA/cm2 at 90 kOe. Magneto-optical imaging of the wire confirmed the large intergranul…
MgB2 wires and tapes suffer from a limitation of the transport current densities, especially at low field, due to an unsufficient thermal stabilization caused by hot spots from a non-homogeneous microstructure, the presence of secondary phases and voids. For the preparation of MgB2 wires and tapes two different precursor routes, using MgB2 (ex-situ process) or Mg + B (in-situ process) are applied. The in-situ approach allows variation of many parameters in the wire preparation and the improvement of this approach is the central topic of this paper. We present an improved in-situ approach, the …
We present the fabrication and test results of Hot-Isostatic-Pressed (HIPed) Powder-in-Tube (PIT) MgB$_2$ coils. The coils properties were measured by transport and magnetization at different applied fields ($H$) and temperatures ($T$). The engineering critical current ($J_e$) value is the largest reported in PIT MgB$_2$ wires or tapes. At 25 K our champion 6-layer coil was able to generate a field of 1 T at self-field ($I_c >$ 220 A, $J_e \sim 2.8 \times 10^4$ A/cm$^2$). At 4 K this coil generated 1.6 T under an applied field of 1.25 T ($I_c \sim350$ A, $J_e \sim 4.5 \times 10^4$ A/cm$^2$). T…
We prepared polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm1111) bulk samples by sintering and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in order to study the effects of phase purity and relative density on the intergranular current density. Sintered and HIPped Sm1111 samples are denser with fewer impurity phases, such as SmOF and the grain boundary wetting phase, FeAs. We found quite complex magnetization behavior due to variations of both the inter and intragranular current densities. Removing porosity and reducing second phase content enhanced the intergranular current density, but HIPping reduced Tc and the intragran…
We fabricated (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 superconducting wires using the powder-in-tube method and hot isostatic pressing. By improving powder synthesis processes compared with previous studies, highly pure raw materials for the wire fabrication were obtained. The largest transport critical current density (Jc) reached 40 kAcm-2 at T = 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 100 kOe. This value exceeds not only the value of transport Jc of the previous (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wire but also those of all iron-based superconducting round wires. Improvements of polycrystalline powder synthesis play a key role for the enhancemen…
A trapped field of over 1 T at 5 K and 0.5 T at 20 K has been measured between a stack of magnetized cylinders of bulk polycrystalline Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductors 10 mm in diameter and 18 mm in combined thickness. The trapped field showed a low magnetic creep rate (~3% after 24 hours at 5 K), while magneto-optical imaging revealed a trapped field distribution corresponding to uniform macroscopic current loops circulating through the sample. The superconductors were manufactured by hot isostatic pressing of pre-reacted powders using the scalable powder-in-tube technique. A high Vickers hard…
Superconducting $MgB_2$ wires in Cu, GlidCop or Monel sheath with Nb or Fe barrier are prepared. Wires vary by sheath material, number of superconducting cores and their chemical composition. Wires are HIP-ed (Hot Isostatic Pressing) at various temperatures ($600-800^oC$) and pressure (up to 1.4 GPa). SEM pictures of cross sections are investigated in order to investigate barrier reactivity and cracking, superconducting material density and grain sizes. Transport measurements are made in magnetic field up to 14 T leading to calculations of critical current density $j_c$ and global pinning forc…
