Demanding microwave applications in a magnetic field require the material optimization not only in zero-field but, more important, in the in-field flux motion dominated regime. However, the effect of artificial pinning centers (APC) remains unclear at high frequency. Moreover, in coated conductors the evaluation of the high frequency material properties is difficult due to the complicated electromagnetic problem of a thin superconducting film on a buffered metal substrate. In this paper we present an experimental study at 48 GHz of 150-200 nm YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ coated conductors, with and without APCs, on buffered Ni-5at%W tapes. By properly addressing the electromagnetic problem of the extraction of the superconductor parameters from the measured overall surface impedance $Z$, we are able to extract and to comment on the London penetration depth, the flux flow resistivity and the pinning constant, highlighting the effect of artificial pinning centers in these samples.
It is shown that the critical currents of high-Tc superconducting tapes fabricated by the coated conductor technologies are enhanced considerably if grain arrangements with large effective grain boundary areas are used. Increasing the aspect ratios of the grains reduces the deleterious effects of the grain boundaries. A practical road to competitive high-Tc cables is proposed.
Various commercial coated conductors were irradiated with fast neutrons in order to introduce randomly distributed, uncorrelated defects which increase the critical current density, Jc, in a wide temperature and field range. The Jc-anisotropy is significantly reduced and the angular dependence of Jc does not obey the anisotropic scaling approach. These defects enhance the irreversibility line in not fully optimized tapes, but they do not in state-of-the-art conductors. Neutron irradiation provides a clear distinction between the low field region, where Jc is limited by the grain boundaries, an…
Based on a study of the thermophysical properties, we derived a practical formula for the normal zone propagation velocity appropriate for REBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ coated conductors in high magnetic fields. An analytical expression to evaluate the current sharing temperature as a function of the operating conditions is also proposed. The presented study has allowed us to account for experimental results not fully understood in the framework of the models widely used in the literature. In particular, we provided a fundamental understanding of the experimental evidence that the normal zone propag…
AC losses of YBCO coated conductors are investigated by calculation and experiment for the higher frequency regime. Previous research using YBCO film deposited onto single crystal substrates demonstrated the effectiveness of filamentary subdivision as a technique for AC loss reduction. As a result of these studies the idea of subdividing YBCO coated conductors (both YBCO, overlayer, and even underlayer) into such stripes suggested itself. The suggestion was implemented by burning grooves into samples of coated conductor using laser micromachining. Various machining parameters were investigated…
We present a comparative study of the angular dependent critical current density in YBa2Cu3O7 films deposited on IBAD MgO and on single crystal MgO and SrTiO3 substrates. We identify three angular regimes where pinning is dominated by different types of correlated and uncorrelated defects. We show that those regimes are present in all cases, indicating that the pinning mechanisms are the same, but their extension and characteristics are sample dependent, reflecting the quantitative differences in texture and defect density. In particular, the more defective nature of the films on IBAD turns in…
A series of biaxially textured Ni(1-x)Cr(x) materials, with compositions x = 0, 7, 9, 11, and 13 at % Cr, have been studied for use as substrate materials in coated conductor applications with high temperature superconductors. The magnetic properties were investigated, including the hysteretic loss in a Ni-7 at % Cr sample that was controllably deformed; for comparison, the loss was also measured in a similarly deformed pure Ni substrate. Complementary X-ray diffraction studies show that thermo-mechanical processing produces nearly complete {100}<100> cube texturing, as desired for application…
The use of REBCO coated conductors is envisaged for many applications, extending from power cables to high-field magnets. Whatever the case, thermal properties of REBCO tapes play a key role for the stability of superconducting devices. In this work, we present the first study on the longitudinal thermal conductivity ($κ$) of REBCO coated conductors in magnetic fields up to 19 T applied both parallelly and perpendicularly to the thermal-current direction. Copper-stabilized tapes from six industrial manufacturers have been investigated. We show that zero-field $κ$ of coated conductors can be ca…
The application of HTS coated conductors in future fusion or accelerator magnets is currently of increasing interest. High Lorentz forces and therefore high hoop stresses act on the conductors in large coils. The conductor is furthermore exposed to neutron radiation in fusion or accelerator magnets. The expected neutron fluence over the desired lifetime of such magnets can be simulated by irradiation experiments in a fission reactor. The coated conductors were characterized in the pristine state and after irradiation to the ITER design fluence. The sensitivity of the critical currents to appli…
The critical currents of MOD/RABiTS and PLD/IBAD coated conductors have been measured as a function of magnetic field orientation and compared to films grown on single crystal substrates. By varying the orientation of magnetic field applied in the plane of the film, we are able to determine the extent to which current flow in each type of conductor is percolative. Standard MOD/RABiTS conductors have also been compared to samples whose grain boundaries have been doped by diffusing Ca from an overlayer. We find that undoped MOD/RABiTS tapes have a less anisotropic in-plane field dependence than …
We fabricated a compact (13$\times$12$\times$12.5 mm${^3}$) trapped-field magnet by stacking 200 pieces of EuBa${_2}$Cu${_3}$O${_7}$ coated conductors with BaHfO${_3}$ nanorods as artificial pinning centers. It was magnetized by field-cooling method using a 18 T superconducting magnet, and the maximum field of 14.8 T was trapped at 10 K at a field-ramp rate of 0.1 T/min. At higher temperatures, although the trapped field was decreased, we could trap the field with much faster ramp rate. In order to understand these results, we also performed calculations of the trapped field based on $J_\mathr…
We identify a phase transition in the vortex system of a high-temperature superconductor with nano-columnar stacks of precipitates as strong vortex pinning centers. Above a particular, temperature-dependent field $B_X(T)$ the vortex response is no longer determined by the nano-columns, and is instead determined by point-like pinning. This phase transition leads to the change in the measured critical current density as a function of angle between the applied magnetic field and the nano-columns. Below the unbinding, there is a strong maximum in $J_C$ when field is aligned parallel to the columns…
We analyze fundamental issues related to the thermal and electrical stability of a coated conductor during its operation. We address the role of conductive buffer layers in the stability of Ni-based coated conductors, and the effect of a metallic cap layer on the electrical properties of Ni alloy-based superconducting tapes. For the first case we report on the fabrication of a fully conductive RABiTS architecture formed of bilayers of conductive oxides SrRuO3 and LaNiO3 on textured Ni tapes. For the second case we discuss measurements of current-voltage relations on Ag/YBa2Cu3O7-d and Cu/Ag/ Y…
This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation of the performance of two types of magnetic screens assembled from YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) coated conductors. Since effective screening of the axial DC magnetic field requires the unimpeded flow of an azimuthal persistent current, we demonstrate a configuration of a screening shell made out of standard YBCO coated conductor capable to accomplish that. The screen allows the persistent current to flow in the predominantly azimuthal direction at a temperature of 77 K. The persistent screen, incorporating a single layer of superconducting …
A large decrease is observed in the critical current density of YBCO coated conductors (CC) and related compounds when a strong perpendicular magnetic field is applied. While measurements are generally carried out at 77K only, here we present a magnetic technique permitting to determine the critical current per unit width of conductor (Icr/w) in a large temperature range. We report measurements carried out on various CCs that show that, in addition to the reduction in the critical temperature that can be attributed to the low value of the irreversibility field near Tc, the field application re…
For superconducting coils with many turns, it is widely believed that the magnetic field from magnetization currents is negligible compared to the one generated by the whole coil. This article shows that this is not true for coils with a considerably large number of turns (up to thousands). We introduce a method to accurately calculate the AC loss in coils with virtually any number of turns that takes the magnetization currents into account. The current density and AC loss is analyzed for two windings made of coated conductor consisting of 32 pancake coils totaling 768 and 6400 turns, respecti…
High temperature superconducting (HTS) stacks of coated conductors (CCs) can work as strong trapped field magnets (TFMs) and show potential in electrical applications. Pulsed field magnetization (PFM) is a practical method to magnetize such TFMs, but due to heat generation during the dynamic process, it cannot achieve a trapped field as high as field cooling can. In this work, we construct a 2D electromagnetic-thermal coupled model to simulate stacks of HTS CCs with realistic laminated structures magnetized by PFM. The model considers temperature and anisotropic magnetic field dependent Jc of …
The in-field critical current of commercial YBa2Cu3O7 coated conductors can be substantially enhanced by post-fabrication irradiation with 4 MeV protons. Irradiation to a fluence of 8x10^16 p/cm^2 induces a near doubling of the critical current in fields of 6 T || c at a temperature of 27 K, a field and temperature range of interest for applications such as rotating machinery. A mixed pinning landscape of preexisting precipitates and twin boundaries and small, finely dispersed irradiation induced defects may account for the improved vortex pinning in high magnetic fields. Our data indicate tha…
Rare earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) coated conductor has emerged as one of the high Tc superconductors suitable for future ultrahigh field superconducting magnet applications. In the design and fabrication of such ultrahigh field REBCO magnets, it is essential to understand the behavior of REBCO coated conductor. The effect of heating on the properties of commercial REBCO coated conductors is very important for many practical reasons. Nevertheless, a comprehensive study on this effect have not yet been presented in the published literature. This work studies a commercial REBCO coated conduc…
There are numerous potential applications for superconducting tapes, based on YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films coated onto metallic substrates. A long established goal of more than 15 years has been to understand the magnetic flux pinning mechanisms which allow films to maintain high current densities out to high magnetic fields. In fact, films carry 1-2 orders of magnitude higher current densities than any other form of the material. For this reason, the idea of further improving pinning has received little attention. Now that commercialisation of conductors is much closer, for both better performanc…
Scaling relations describing the electromagnetic behaviour of coated conductors (CCs) greatly simplify the design of REBCO-based devices. The performance of REBCO CCs is strongly influenced by fabrication route, conductor architecture and materials, and these parameters vary from one manufacturer to the others. In the present work we have examined the critical surface for the current density, Jc(T,B,$θ$), of coated conductors from six different manufacturers: American Superconductor Co. (US), Bruker HTS GmbH (Germany), Fujikura Ltd. (Japan), SuNAM Co. Ltd. (Korea), SuperOx ZAO (Russia) and Sup…
REBCO coated conductors (CCs) have the potential to widen considerably the application areas of superconductivity. Quench protection of REBCO-based devices represents one of the major obstacles to this expansion. Thermal conductivity data are mandatory ingredients for quench simulation studies. In particular, the transverse thermal conductivity ($κ_T$) of the CC plays a key role in case of quenches in superconducting magnets. In the present work, we report $κ_T$ of thermally stabilized REBCO CCs produced by different manufacturers. We have measured $κ_T$ on single CCs rather than on stacks of …
In this contribution we develop a refined numerical model of pancake coils assembled from a coated conductor Roebel cable, which includes the angular dependence of the critical current density $J_c$ on the magnetic field and the actual (three-dimensional) shape of the current lead used to inject the current. Previous works of ours indicate that this latter has an important influence on the measured value of the AC losses. For the simulation of the superconductor, we used two alternative models based on different descriptions of the superconductor's properties and implemented in different mathe…
Study of AC losses in superconducting wires and tapes is usually restricted by consideration of applied sinusoidal currents and/or magnetic fields. However, currents in electric power systems contain a wide variety of harmonics. The currents become strongly non-sinusoidal at the operation of converters, non-linear reactors, and during transient and overload conditions. Recently it has been shown that the contribution of higher harmonics to AC losses in superconducting bulk and thin film samples can be tens times larger than in normal-metal samples of the same form and the 5% harmonic can incre…
We have investigated single grain boundaries (GBs) isolated in coated conductors produced by Metal-Organic Deposition (MOD). When a magnetic field is swept in the film plane, an angle-dependent crossover from boundary to grain limited critical current density Jc is found. In the force-free orientation, even at fields as high as 8 T, the GBs still limit Jc. We deduce that this effect is a direct consequence of GB meandering. We have employed these single GB results to explain the dependence of Jc of polycrystalline tracks on their width: in-plane measurements become flatter as the tracks are na…
We determine the critical current anisotropy at maximum Lorentz force from hysteresis loops in a vibrating sample magnetometer. To eliminate the signal of spurious variable Lorentz force currents it is sufficient to cut the sample to a specific length, which is calculated from the position dependent sensitivity of the instrument. The procedure increases the resolution of the measurement and the results compare well to transport data on the same sample. As the electric field in magnetisation measurements is lower than in transport experiments the anisotropy at high currents (low temperatures an…
Low AC loss high transport current HTS cables (>1 kA) are required for application in transformers, generators and are considered for future generations of fusion reactors coils. 2G coated conductors are suitable candidates for high field application at quite high operation temperatures of 50-77 K, which is crucial precondition for economical cooling costs. As a feasibility study we present the first ROEBEL bar cable of approx. 35 cm length made from industrial DyBCO coated conductor (THEVA GmbH, Germany). Meander shaped ROEBEL strands of 4 mm width with a twist pitch of 180 mm were cut from 1…
In this work we present a modeling tool designed to estimate the hysteretic losses in the coils of an electric generator with coils made of coated conductor tapes during transient operation. The model is based on a two-stage segregated model approach that allows simulating the electric generator and the current distribution in the superconducting coils using a one-way coupling from the generator to the HTS coils model. The model has two inputs: the rotational speed and the electric load signal. A homogeneous anisotropic bulk model for the coils allows computing the current distribution in the …
We report the magnetization losses in an experimental multifilament coated conductor. A 4 mm wide and 10 cm long YBCO coated conductor was subdivided into eight 0.5 mm wide filaments by laser ablation and subjected to post-ablation treatment. As the result, the hysteresis loss was reduced, as expected, in proportion to the width of the filaments. However, the coupling loss was reduced dramatically, and became practically negligible, in the range of a sweep rate up to 20 T/s. This represents a drastic improvement on previous multifilament conductors in which often the coupling losses became equ…
The implementation of the 2nd generation high-Tc superconductors in power applications, such as electrical transformers, motors and generators requires superconducting wires that are superior to copper Litz wires at cryogenic temperatures in terms of losses in time-varying magnetic field, as well as in engineering current density. Another problem is to find a way to make practical coils and armatures out of flat tape-like conductors with low bending strain tolerance. We discuss several novel approaches to the construction of coils and armatures based specifically on the properties of coated co…
We will discuss how stability and speed of normal zone propagation in YBCO-coated conductors is affected by interfacial resistance between the superconducting film and the stabilizer. Our numerical simulation has shown that the increased interfacial resistance substantially increases speed of normal zone propagation and decreases the stability margins. Optimization of the value of the resistance may lead to a better compromise between stability and quench protection requirements than what is found in currently manufactured coated conductors.
Critical current density Jc in polycrystalline or granular superconducting material is known to be hysteretic with applied field H due to the focusing of field within the boundary between adjacent grains. This is of concern in the so-called coated conductors wherein superconducting film is grown on a granular, but textured surface of a metal substrate. While previous work has mainly been on Jc determined using induced or magnetization currents, the present work utilizes transport current via an applied potential in strip geometry. It is observed that the effect is not as pronounced using trans…
BaZrO3 (BZO) nanorods are now incorporated into production IBAD-MOCVD coated conductors. Here we compare several examples of both BZO-free and BZO-containing coated conductors using critical current (Ic) characterizations at 4.2 K over their full angular range up to fields of 31 T. We find that BZO nanorods do not produce any c-axis distortion of the critical current density Jc(theta) curve at 4.2 K at any field, but also that pinning is nevertheless strongly enhanced compared to the non-BZO conductors. We also find that the tendency of the ab-plane Jc(theta) peak to become cusp-like is modera…
We demonstrate that 3.5-MeV oxygen irradiation can markedly enhance the in-field critical current of commercial 2nd generation superconducting tapes with an exposure time of just one second per 0.8 cm2. The speed demonstrated here is now at the level required for an industrial reel-to-reel post-processing. The irradiation is made on production line samples through the protective silver coating and does not require any modification of the growth process. From TEM imaging, we identify small clusters as the main source of increased vortex pinning.
Measurements of the first-flux-penetration field in surface-treated and coated Nb: Distinguishing between surface pinning and an interface energy barrier
Rare-earth-barium-copper-oxide (REBCO) tapes are now available from several industrial manufacturers and are very promising conductors in high field applications. Due to diverging materials and deposition processes, these manufacturers' tapes can be expected to differ in their electro-mechanical and mechanical properties. For magnets designers, these are together with the conductors' in-field critical current performance of the highest importance in choosing a suitable conductor. In this work, the strain and stress dependence of the current carrying capabilities as well as the stress and strai…
We report on the thickness dependence of the superconducting characteristics including critical current Ic, critical current density Jc, transition temperature Tc, irreversibility field Hirr, bulk pinning force plot Fp(H), and the normal state resistivity curve measured after successive ion milling of ~ 1 um thick high Ic YBa2Cu3O7-x films made by an ex situ metal-organic deposition process on Ni-W rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS). Contrary to many recent data, mostly on in situ pulsed laser deposition (PLD) films, which show strong depression of Jc with increasing film …
We report an experimental approach to making multifilament coated conductors with low losses in applied time-varying magnetic field. Previously, the multifilament conductors obtained for that purpose by laser ablation suffered from high coupling losses. Here we report how this problem can be solved. When the substrate metal in the grooves segregating the filaments is exposed to oxygen, it forms high resistivity oxides that electrically insulate the stripes from each other and from the substrate. As the result, the coupling loss has become negligible over the entire range of tested parameters (…
Most applications of superconductors, such as power transmission lines, motors, generators, and transformers, require long cables through which large currents circulate. Impressive progress has recently been achieved in the current-carrying capability in conductors based on high-temperature superconductors. Coated conductors are likely the best examples, consisting of very good quality thin layers of YBCO superconductor grown on top of a metallic tape with some intermediate layers. However, there is an important problem for achieving large currents: a large decrease in transport critical-curre…
We report the influence of 6 MeV Zr$^{4+}$ irradiation and post-irradiation annealing (200 °C) in the in-field dependences of the critical current densities J$_c$ of 1.3 $μ$m thick GdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-d}$ coated conductors grown by co-evaporation. Samples were irradiated with 6 MeV Zr$^{4+}$ and fluences between 2.3x10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 3x10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. The correlation between the superconducting critical temperature T$_c$ and in-field dependences of critical current densities J$_c$ has been analyzed. In addition, random disorder introduced by irradiation was reduced by thermal anneal…
High temperature superconducting coated conductor (CC) could be practically applied in electric equipment due to its favorable mechanical properties and the critical current performance of YBCO superconducting layer. It is well known that CC could be easily delaminated because of its poor stress tolerance in thickness direction, i.e. along the c-axis of YBCO. Commonly, a stack including YBCO layer and silver stabilizer could be obtained after the delamination. It would be interesting to investigate the superconducting properties of the delaminated stack, since it could also be considered as a …
Striating HTS coated conductor (CC) tapes into narrow filaments offers the possibility of reducing the tapes' magnetization losses without unreasonably decreasing their current-carrying capability. However, realizing well-separated striations presents technological challenges, especially if the number of filaments is large and/or if a thick layer of metallic stabilizer is present. In these situations, the filaments can be easily coupled and their effectiveness to reduce magnetization losses is strongly diminished or eliminated. While the onset of coupling is well visible from magnetization los…
We report the results of a magnetization losses study in experimental multifilament, multiply connected coated superconductors exposed to time-varying magnetic field. In these samples, the superconducting layer is divided into parallel stripes segregated by non-superconducting grooves. In order to facilitate the current sharing between the stripes and thus increase the reliability of the striated conductors, a sparse network of superconducting bridges is superimposed on the striated film. We find that the presence of the bridges does not substantially increase the magnetization losses, both hy…
We aim to demonstrate an efficient method to calculate the AC losses in multi-pancake coils. This method extends Yuan front-track model into several pancake application and investigates the detail parameters in comparison with established H-formula implemented in COMSOL and minimization of energy method. We use the front-track idea to analyze stacked pancakes assuming the current fronts are straight lines and using the critical state model. The current distribution is solved by two means: minimization of the perpendicular magnetic field in the subcritical region, as Clem and Yuan proposed; min…
Screening currents caused by varying magnetic fields degrade the homogeneity and stability of the magnetic fields created by $RE$BCO coated conductor coils. They are responsible for the AC loss, which is also important for other power applications containing windings. Since real magnets contain coils exceeding 10000 turns, accurate modeling tools for this number of turns are necessary for magnet design. This article presents a fast numerical method to model coils with no loss of accuracy. We model a 10400-turn coil for its real geometry and coils of up to 40000 turns with the continuous approx…
This paper uses both experimental and numerical approaches to revisit the concept of current transfer length (CTL) in second-generation high-temperature superconductor coated conductors with a current flow diverter (CFD) architecture. The CFD architecture has been implemented on eight commercial coated conductors samples from THEVA. In order to measure the 2-D current distribution in the silver stabilizer layer of the samples, we first used a custom-made array of 120 voltage taps to measure the surface potential distribution. Then, the so-called "static" CTL ($λ_s$) was extracted using a semi-…
Roebel cables made of HTS coated conductors can carry high currents with a compact design and reduced AC losses. They are therefore good candidates for manufacturing coils for HTS applications such as motors and generators. In this paper we present the experimental DC and AC characterization of several coils assembled from a 5 meter long Roebel cable built at KIT, which differ in the number of turns and turn-to-turn spacing. Our experiments, supported by finite-element method (FEM) calculations, show that a more tightly wound Roebel coil, despite having a lower critical (and therefore operatin…
The AC loss in ReBCO coated conductors is large in situations when the conductors are subjected to a considerable magnetic field, like in rotating machines, transformers and high-field magnets. Roebel cables can reduce the AC loss in these cases. However, computer simulations are needed to interpret the experiments, understand the loss mechanisms, reduce the AC loss by optimising the Roebel cable and design the cryogenic system. In this article, we simulate and discuss the AC loss due to an applied magnetic field making an arbitrary angle with the cable and taking into account a realistic anis…
We present the results of numerical analysis of a model of normal zone propagation in coated conductors. The main emphasis is on the effects of increased contact resistance between the superconducting film and the stabilizer on the speed of normal zone propagation, the maximum temperature rise inside the normal zone, and the stability margins. We show that with increasing contact resistance the speed of normal zone propagation increases, the maximum temperature inside the normal zone decreases, and stability margins shrink. This may have an overall beneficial effect on quench protection qualit…
We report the data on magnetization losses and critical current of multifilament copper stabilized coated conductors. Eight centimeters long samples of copper stabilized YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) coated conductors manufactured commercially were subdivided into superconducting filaments by near-IR laser micromachining. The width of the superconducting stripes was varied from 0.2 mm to 0.04 mm. Some of the samples were striated leaving superconducting bridges for current sharing between the filaments. The AC losses were measured at different sweep rates of the magnetic field up to 14 T/s. We will prese…
In this letter we demonstrate the development of ternary Nb3Sn multifilamentary conductors with artificial pinning centers (APC) which achieve high critical fields. These recently-developed conductors were tested in a 31 T magnet, and the results showed that their upper critical field (Bc2) values at 4.2 K are 27-28 T, and irreversible field (Birr) values are above 26 T, values similar to or higher than those of best RRP conductors. The non-Cu Jc has been brought to nearly 1200 A/mm2 at 16 T and 4.2 K, comparable to RRP, in spite of the fact that the fine-grain Nb3Sn fractions in filaments are…
We report the influence of crystalline defects introduced by 6 MeV $^{16}$O$^{3+}$ irradiation on the critical current densities J$_c$ and flux creep rates in 1.3 $μ$m thick GdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-d}$ coated conductor produced by co-evaporation. Pristine films with pinning produced mainly by random nanoparticles with diameter close to 50 nm were irradiated with doses between 2x10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 4x10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$. At temperatures below 40 K with the magnetic field applied parallel (H//c) and at 45° (H//45°) to the c-axis, the in-field J$_c$ dependences can be significantly improved by ir…
Numerical models are powerful tools to predict the electromagnetic behavior of superconductors. In recent years, a variety of models have been successfully developed to simulate high-temperature-superconducting (HTS) coated conductor tapes. While the models work well for the simulation of individual tapes or relatively small assemblies, their direct applicability to devices involving hundreds or thousands of tapes, as for example coils used in electrical machines, is questionable. Indeed the simulation time and memory requirement can quickly become prohibitive. In this article, we develop and …
This book chapter reviews the current status of Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) for coated conductor applications of YBCO on metallic tapes. Clearly, PLD is one of the most promising techniques - particularly for thick films - and has led to some of the highest critical currents Jc. The reputation of PLD as being an expensive technique for manufacturing is carefully addressed by calculating the laser operation cost per length of tape. It is shown that the expenses related to the ownership and operation of an industrial excimer laser (including, most importantly, laser tubes and window sets) cont…
We consider the distribution of an electric field in YBCO-coated conductors for a situation in which the DC transport current is forced into the copper stabilizer due to a weak link -- a section of the superconducting film with a critical current less than the transport current. The electric field in the metal substrate is also discussed. The results are compared with recent experiments on normal zone propagation in coated conductors for which the substrate and stabilizer are insulated from each other. The potential difference between the substrate and stabilizer, and the electric field in the…
We present the results of numerical analysis of normal zone propagation in a stack of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ coated conductors which imitates a pancake coil. Our main purpose is to determine whether the quench protection quality of such coils can be substantially improved by increased contact resistance between the superconducting film and the stabilizer. We show that with increased contact resistance the speed of normal zone propagation increases, the detection of a normal zone inside the coil becomes possible earlier, when the peak temperature inside the normal zone is lower, and stability margi…
Modelling high temperature superconductor (HTS) motors remains challenging mainly due to the high aspect ratio of these conductors but also because of the properties of the magnetic materials. This paper presents a 2D time dependent model to assess the AC losses of superconducting motors based on the new T-A formulation, which by using Finite Element Methods (FEM), allows its implementation in commercial software. The T-A formulation computes the magnetic flux density with different Maxwell's equations depending on the areas of the motor and makes it possible to use the thin strip approximatio…
The high upper critical field characteristic of the recently discovered iron-based superconducting chalcogenides opens the possibility of developing a new type of non-oxide high-field superconducting wires. In this work, we utilize a buffered metal template on which we grow a textured FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ layer, an approach developed originally for high temperature superconducting coated conductors. These tapes carry high critical current densities (>1$\times10^{4}$A/cm$^{2}$) at about 4.2K under magnetic field as high as 25 T, which are nearly isotropic to the field direction. This demonstr…
