We present the results of numerical analysis of normal zone propagation in a stack of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ coated conductors which imitates a pancake coil. Our main purpose is to determine whether the quench protection quality of such coils can be substantially improved by increased contact resistance between the superconducting film and the stabilizer. We show that with increased contact resistance the speed of normal zone propagation increases, the detection of a normal zone inside the coil becomes possible earlier, when the peak temperature inside the normal zone is lower, and stability margins shrink. Thus, increasing contact resistance may become a viable option for improving the prospects of coated conductors for high $T_c$ magnets applications.
Many applications of ReBCO coated conductors contain stacks of pancake coils. In order to reduce their high AC loss, it is necessary to understand the loss mechanisms. In this article, we measure and simulate the AC loss and the critical current, I_c, in stacks of pancake coils ("pancakes"). We construct stacks of up to 4 pancakes and we measure them by electrical means. We also obtain the anisotropic field dependence of J_c from I_c measurements of the tape. This J_c is the only input to the simulations, together with the coil dimensions. After validating our computations with the measurement…
We have wound a 157-turn, non-insulated pancake coil with an outer diameter of 85 mm and we cooled it down to 77 K with a combination of conduction and gas cooling. Using high-speed fluorescent thermal imaging in combination with electrical measurements we have investigated the coil under load, including various ramping tests and over-current experiments. We have found found that the coil does not heat up measurably when being ramped to below its critical current. Two over-current experiments are presented, where in one case the coil recovered by itself and in another case a thermal runaway oc…
We aim to demonstrate an efficient method to calculate the AC losses in multi-pancake coils. This method extends Yuan front-track model into several pancake application and investigates the detail parameters in comparison with established H-formula implemented in COMSOL and minimization of energy method. We use the front-track idea to analyze stacked pancakes assuming the current fronts are straight lines and using the critical state model. The current distribution is solved by two means: minimization of the perpendicular magnetic field in the subcritical region, as Clem and Yuan proposed; min…
The electromagnetic properties of a pancake coil in AC regime as a function of the number of turns is studied theoretically and experimentally. Specifically, the AC loss, the coil critical current and the voltage signal are discussed. The coils are made of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10/Ag (BiSCCO) tape, although the main qualitative results are also applicable to other kinds of superconducting tapes, such as coated conductors. The AC loss and the voltage signal are electrically measured using different pick up coils with the help of a transformer. One of them avoids dealing with the huge coil inductance. Be…
The thermal diffusion properties of several different kinds of YBCO insulations and the quench properties of pancake coils made using these insulations were studied. Insulations investigated include Nomex, Kapton, and Mylar, as well as insulations based on ZnO, Zn2GeO4, and ZnO-Cu. Initially, short stacks of YBCO conductors with interlayer insulation, epoxy, and a central heater strip were made and later measured for thermal conductivity in liquid nitrogen. Subsequently, three different pancake coils were made. The first two were smaller, each using one meter total of YBCO tape present as four…
In this contribution we develop a refined numerical model of pancake coils assembled from a coated conductor Roebel cable, which includes the angular dependence of the critical current density $J_c$ on the magnetic field and the actual (three-dimensional) shape of the current lead used to inject the current. Previous works of ours indicate that this latter has an important influence on the measured value of the AC losses. For the simulation of the superconductor, we used two alternative models based on different descriptions of the superconductor's properties and implemented in different mathe…
Roebel cables made of HTS coated conductors can carry high currents with a compact design and reduced AC losses. They are therefore good candidates for manufacturing coils for HTS applications such as motors and generators. In this paper we present the experimental DC and AC characterization of several coils assembled from a 5 meter long Roebel cable built at KIT, which differ in the number of turns and turn-to-turn spacing. Our experiments, supported by finite-element method (FEM) calculations, show that a more tightly wound Roebel coil, despite having a lower critical (and therefore operatin…
Iron-pnictides are hotly studied since 2008 in the superconducting materials research area, due to their special properties and unclear mechanism. Big achievement has been made in the pnictide research during the past years. For practical uses, pnictide superconductor should be fabricated in a long wire form which can be used for different devices. In this work, 100 m class 7-core Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr122) tapes have been made using the powder-in-tube technique, which is reported for the first time. Clearly, an average Jc of 1.3x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T was reached over the 115 meter length, showing …
The iron-based superconductor (IBS) single pancake coil (SPC) with 30 mm inner diameter was firstly fabricated and tested under 24 T background field. This SPC was successfully made using the 7-filamentary Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (Ba122) tape by wind-and-react method. This IBS coil show the highest Ic value at magnetic field reported so far. For example, the transport critical current of this Ba122 SPC achieved 35 A at 4.2 K and 10 T, which is about half of that of short sample. This indicates that the non-insulation winding process together with the stainless-steel tape is suitable to the iron-based su…
To explore the limits of layer wound (RE)Ba2Cu3O7-x (REBCO, RE = Rare Earth) coils in a high magnetic field environment > 30 T, a series of small insert coils have been built and characterized in background fields. One of the coils repeatedly reached 35.4 T using a single ~100 m length of REBCO tape wet wound with epoxy and nested in a 31 T background magnet. The coil was quenched safely several times without degradation. Contributing to the success of this coil was the introduction of a thin polyester film that surrounded the conductor. This approach introduces a weak circumferential plane in…
For superconducting coils with many turns, it is widely believed that the magnetic field from magnetization currents is negligible compared to the one generated by the whole coil. This article shows that this is not true for coils with a considerably large number of turns (up to thousands). We introduce a method to accurately calculate the AC loss in coils with virtually any number of turns that takes the magnetization currents into account. The current density and AC loss is analyzed for two windings made of coated conductor consisting of 32 pancake coils totaling 768 and 6400 turns, respecti…
In this work we present a modeling tool designed to estimate the hysteretic losses in the coils of an electric generator with coils made of coated conductor tapes during transient operation. The model is based on a two-stage segregated model approach that allows simulating the electric generator and the current distribution in the superconducting coils using a one-way coupling from the generator to the HTS coils model. The model has two inputs: the rotational speed and the electric load signal. A homogeneous anisotropic bulk model for the coils allows computing the current distribution in the …
The AC loss in ReBCO coated conductors is large in situations when the conductors are subjected to a considerable magnetic field, like in rotating machines, transformers and high-field magnets. Roebel cables can reduce the AC loss in these cases. However, computer simulations are needed to interpret the experiments, understand the loss mechanisms, reduce the AC loss by optimising the Roebel cable and design the cryogenic system. In this article, we simulate and discuss the AC loss due to an applied magnetic field making an arbitrary angle with the cable and taking into account a realistic anis…
High temperature superconducting (HTS) stacks of coated conductors (CCs) can work as strong trapped field magnets (TFMs) and show potential in electrical applications. Pulsed field magnetization (PFM) is a practical method to magnetize such TFMs, but due to heat generation during the dynamic process, it cannot achieve a trapped field as high as field cooling can. In this work, we construct a 2D electromagnetic-thermal coupled model to simulate stacks of HTS CCs with realistic laminated structures magnetized by PFM. The model considers temperature and anisotropic magnetic field dependent Jc of …
Many applications, such as magnets and SMES, are usually charged and discharged under a bias DC current, which may increase the AC loss. For their design, it is necessary to understand and predict the AC loss. This article analises the AC loss in magnet-like coils under DC bias contribution super-imposed to the AC current. The analysis is based on a numerical model that takes the interaction between magnetization currents in all turns into account. The studied example is a stack of 32 pancake coils with 200 turns each made of thin tape, such as $Re$BCO coated conductor. We present the current …
The implementation of the 2nd generation high-Tc superconductors in power applications, such as electrical transformers, motors and generators requires superconducting wires that are superior to copper Litz wires at cryogenic temperatures in terms of losses in time-varying magnetic field, as well as in engineering current density. Another problem is to find a way to make practical coils and armatures out of flat tape-like conductors with low bending strain tolerance. We discuss several novel approaches to the construction of coils and armatures based specifically on the properties of coated co…
Screening currents caused by varying magnetic fields degrade the homogeneity and stability of the magnetic fields created by $RE$BCO coated conductor coils. They are responsible for the AC loss, which is also important for other power applications containing windings. Since real magnets contain coils exceeding 10000 turns, accurate modeling tools for this number of turns are necessary for magnet design. This article presents a fast numerical method to model coils with no loss of accuracy. We model a 10400-turn coil for its real geometry and coils of up to 40000 turns with the continuous approx…
Advances on no-insulation REBCO coil technology has made understanding and controlling contact resistivity increasingly im-portant. Praffin (wax) impregnation is a process that has been used for improving mechanical stability of insulated and no-insulation REBCO coils. Wax impregnation is beneficial in both no-insulation coils and insulated coils with additional copper sta-bilizer or multiple conductors. In the latter scenario, contact re-sistance between conductor and additional stabilizer is also im-portant. It is crucial to understand the effects of wax impregna-tion on contact resistivity …
Superconductors have been being applied to a variety of large-scale power applications, including magnets, electric machines, and fault current limiters, because they can enable a compact, lightweight and high efficiency design. In applications such those mentioned above, superconducting coils are always a key component. For example, in a superconducting electric machine, the superconducting coils are used to generate the main flux density in the air gap, which is significantly important for the energy conversion. It is the performance of the superconducting coils that plays an essential role …
Many large-scale applications require electromagnetic modelling with extensive numerical computations, such as magnets or 3-dimensional (3D) objects like transposed conductors or motors and generators. Therefore, it is necessary to develop computationally time-efficient but still accurate numerical methods. This article develops a general variational formalism for any ${\bf E}({\bf J})$ relation and applies it to model coated-conductor coils containing up to thousands of turns, taking magnetization currents fully into account. The variational principle, valid for any 3D situation, restricts th…
Numerical models are powerful tools to predict the electromagnetic behavior of superconductors. In recent years, a variety of models have been successfully developed to simulate high-temperature-superconducting (HTS) coated conductor tapes. While the models work well for the simulation of individual tapes or relatively small assemblies, their direct applicability to devices involving hundreds or thousands of tapes, as for example coils used in electrical machines, is questionable. Indeed the simulation time and memory requirement can quickly become prohibitive. In this article, we develop and …
Modelling high temperature superconductor (HTS) motors remains challenging mainly due to the high aspect ratio of these conductors but also because of the properties of the magnetic materials. This paper presents a 2D time dependent model to assess the AC losses of superconducting motors based on the new T-A formulation, which by using Finite Element Methods (FEM), allows its implementation in commercial software. The T-A formulation computes the magnetic flux density with different Maxwell's equations depending on the areas of the motor and makes it possible to use the thin strip approximatio…
Thrust measurements were performed on a coil made of YBa2Cu3O7-d coated conductor acting as the excitation system of a single-sided linear synchronous motor. The superconducting coil was a single pancake in the shape of a racetrack with 100 turns, the width and effective lengths were 42 mm and 84 mm, respectively. The stator was made of conventional copper wire. At 77 K and a gap of 10 mm, with an operating direct current of I_DC=30 A for the superconducting coil and alternating current of I_AC=9 A for the stator coils, thrust of 24 N was achieved. With addition of an iron core, thrust was inc…
The application of HTS coated conductors in future fusion or accelerator magnets is currently of increasing interest. High Lorentz forces and therefore high hoop stresses act on the conductors in large coils. The conductor is furthermore exposed to neutron radiation in fusion or accelerator magnets. The expected neutron fluence over the desired lifetime of such magnets can be simulated by irradiation experiments in a fission reactor. The coated conductors were characterized in the pristine state and after irradiation to the ITER design fluence. The sensitivity of the critical currents to appli…
AC losses of YBCO coated conductors are investigated by calculation and experiment for the higher frequency regime. Previous research using YBCO film deposited onto single crystal substrates demonstrated the effectiveness of filamentary subdivision as a technique for AC loss reduction. As a result of these studies the idea of subdividing YBCO coated conductors (both YBCO, overlayer, and even underlayer) into such stripes suggested itself. The suggestion was implemented by burning grooves into samples of coated conductor using laser micromachining. Various machining parameters were investigated…
Low AC loss high transport current HTS cables (>1 kA) are required for application in transformers, generators and are considered for future generations of fusion reactors coils. 2G coated conductors are suitable candidates for high field application at quite high operation temperatures of 50-77 K, which is crucial precondition for economical cooling costs. As a feasibility study we present the first ROEBEL bar cable of approx. 35 cm length made from industrial DyBCO coated conductor (THEVA GmbH, Germany). Meander shaped ROEBEL strands of 4 mm width with a twist pitch of 180 mm were cut from 1…
BaZrO3 (BZO) nanorods are now incorporated into production IBAD-MOCVD coated conductors. Here we compare several examples of both BZO-free and BZO-containing coated conductors using critical current (Ic) characterizations at 4.2 K over their full angular range up to fields of 31 T. We find that BZO nanorods do not produce any c-axis distortion of the critical current density Jc(theta) curve at 4.2 K at any field, but also that pinning is nevertheless strongly enhanced compared to the non-BZO conductors. We also find that the tendency of the ab-plane Jc(theta) peak to become cusp-like is modera…
