A lightning surge generator generates a high voltage surge with 1.2 microsec. rise time. The generator fed a spark gap of two pointed electrodes at 0.7 to 1.2 m distances. Gap breakdown occurred between 0.1 and 3 microsec. after the maximum generator voltage of approximately 850 kV. Various scintillator detectors with different response time recorded bursts of hard radiation in nearly all surges. The bursts were detected over the time span between approximately half of the maximum surge voltage and full gap breakdown. The consistent timing of the bursts with the high-voltage surge excluded background radiation as source for the high intensity pulses. In spite of the symmetry of the gap, negative surges produced more intense radiation than positive. This has been attributed to additional positive discharges from the measurement cabinet which occurred for negative surges. Some hard radiation signals were equivalent to several MeV. Pile-up occurs of lesser energy X-ray quanta, but still with a large fraction of these with an energy of the order of 100 keV. The bursts occurred within the 4 nanosec. time resolution of the fastest detector. The relation between the energy of the X-ray quanta and the signal from the scintillation detector is quite complicated, as shown by the measurements.
Measurements of force generated by a positive unipolar wire-to-plane corona discharge in air are compared with numerical simulations. The generated force does not depend on the ion or electron mobilities, preventing the influence of uncertainty and variation of these parameters. A method is described to simulate the voltage and charge distribution for a wire-to-plane set-up. This method enables the determination of the transition between unipolar and bipolar discharges. In the experimental set-up breakdown electric field of air reduces with increasing discharge current.
Data on the observation of neutron bursts in the process of high-voltage discharge in the air at an average electric field strength ~ 1 MV/m and discharge current ~ 10 kA are presented. Two independent methods (CR-39 track detectors and plastic scintillation detectors) registered neutrons within the range from thermal energies up to the energies above 10 MeV with the flux of >= 1E6 neutrons per shot into 4π solid angle.
A complete investigation of the discharge behavior of dielectric barrier discharge device using ZnO-coated dielectric layer in atmospheric pressure is made. Highly conductive ZnO film was deposited on the dielectric surface. Discharge characteristic of the dielectric barrier discharge are examined in different aspects. Experimental result shows that discharge uniformity is improved definitely in the case of ZnO-coated dielectric barrier discharge. And relevant theoretical models and explanation are presented to describing its discharge physics.
Based on the consideration of increasing the number of initial electrons and providing an appropriate distribution of electric field strength for discharge space, a method of adopting the wire-cylindrical type electrode structure with a floating carbon fibre electrode to achieve atmospheric pressure homogeneous discharge (APHD) in air is proposed in this paper. Studies of the electrode characteristics show that this structure can make full use of the microdischarge process of the carbon fibre microelectrode and the good discharge effect of the helical electrode to provide plenty of initial ele…
In this work, evolution of parameters of nanosecond repetitively pulsed (NRP) discharges in pin-to-pin configuration in air was studied during transient stage of initial twenty discharge pulses. Gas and plasma parameters in the discharge gap were measured using coherent microwave scattering (CMS), optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and laser Rayleigh scattering (LRS) for NRP discharges at repetition frequencies of 1, 10 and 100 kHz. Memory effects (when perturbations induced by the previous discharge pulse would not decay fully till the subsequent pulse) were detected for the repetition frequ…
Despite of its limited capabilities for ball-lightning modeling, the chemically active dust plasma of electric discharges is a very interesting physical object. Gatchina's discharge, which gives a possibility to study the dust-gas fireball, represents a complex non-stationary process, combining the creation and the destruction of relatively long-living high-enthalpy microscopic states with non-ideal dust plasma and with a gas-dynamic form, resulting in appearance of a spherical luminous object. In the present work we studied spatial structure of the discharge and its dynamics with the help of …
Streamer discharges are thin plasma channels that precede lightning and sparks. They usually evolve in bundles as stochastic tree-like structures and are inherently difficult to model due to their multiscale nature. In this paper, we perform a computer investigation of positive streamer discharges in air using contemporary photoionization models. We report on three-dimensional computer simulations under conditions that are available in laboratory spark-gap experiments. The solutions demonstrate a multiscale morphology consisting of streamer fluctuations, branching, and the formation of a disch…
We report on the first observation of white-eye pattern in an air dielectric barrier discharge. The patterned discharges undergo a development as following: random spots - quasihexagonal pattern - hexagonal pattern (type I) - hexagonal pattern (type II) - white-eye pattern - chaos as the voltage is increased. The spatiotemporal characteristics of patterned discharges are investigated by using an optical method. Results show that the two discharge modes, uniform mode and filamentary mode, are actually two different spatial presentations of the same origin: the microdischarge. From the viewpoint…
The complex theoretical and experimental investigation of plasma kinetics of the electric discharge in the mixture of air and ethanol-water vapors is carried out. The discharge was burning in the cavity, formed by air jets pumping between electrodes, placed in aqueous ethanol solution. It is found out that the hydrogen yield from the discharge is maximal in the case when ethanol and water in the solution are in equal amounts. It is shown that the hydrogen production increases with the discharge power and reaches the saturation at high value. The concentrations of the main stable gas-phase comp…
Branching is an essential element of streamer discharge dynamics but today it is understood only qualitatively. The variability and irregularity observed in branched streamer trees suggest that stochastic terms are relevant for the description of streamer branching. We here consider electron density fluctuations due to the discrete particle number as a source of stochasticity in positive streamers in air at standard temperature and pressure. We derive a quantitative estimate for the branching distance that agrees within a factor of 2 with experimental values. As branching without noise would o…
We investigate discharge inception in air, in uniform background electric fields above and below the breakdown threshold. We perform 3D particle simulations that include a natural level of background ionization in the form of positive and O$_{2}^-$ ions. When the electric field rises above the breakdown and the detachment threshold, which are similar in air, electrons can detach from O$_{2}^-$ and start ionization avalanches. These avalanches together create one large discharge, in contrast to the `double-headed' streamers found in many fluid simulations. On the other hand, in background field…
This study is designed to explore the two dimensional temperature maps of the atmospheric argon discharge consisting of pin-to-plane electrodes supplied by a high voltage DC source. After checking the stability of the micro discharge, the two dimensional image plane focused by a quartz lens was scanned by the fiber probe driven by a 3D Mobile Platform. The rotational and vibrational temperatures are calculated using nitrogen emissions collected by the high resolution spectrometer and high sensitive intensified charge coupled device (ICCD). The rotational temperature varies from 1558.15 K to 26…
We study the development of a negative discharge driven by a Marx generator of about 1 MV in an air gap of 1 up to 1.5 meter, at standard temperature and pressure. We show the evolution of the discharge with nanosecond-fast photography together with the electrical characteristics. The negative discharge develops through four well-distinguished streamer bursts. The streamers have different velocities and life times in different bursts. The last burst triggers a positive inception cloud on the positive grounded electrode and a burst of positive counter-streamers emerges. The pre-discharge then b…
A pin liquid anode DC discharge is generated in open air without any additional gas feeding to form self-organized patterns (SOPs) on various liquid interfaces. Axially resolved emission spectra of the whole discharge reveal that the self-organized patterns are formed below a dark region and are visible mainly due to the N2 transitions. The high energy N2 (C) level is mainly excited by the impact of electrons heated by the local increased electric field at the interface. For the first time, the effect of the liquid type on the SOP formation is presented. With almost the same other discharge co…
We study the dynamic contraction a self-sustained glow discharge in air in a rectangular duct with convective cooling. A two dimensional numerical model of the plasma contraction was developed in a cylindrical frame. The process is described by a set of time-dependent continuity equations for the electrons, positive and negative ions; gas and vibrational temperature; and equations which account for the convective heat and plasma losses by the transverse flux. Transition from the uniform to contracted state was analyzed. It was shown that such transition experiences a hysteresis, and that the c…
We investigate the development of meter long negative discharges and focus on their X-ray emissions. We describe appearance, timing and spatial distribution of the X-rays. They appear in bursts of nanosecond duration mostly in the cathode area. The spectrum can be characterized by an exponential function with 200 keV characteristic photon energy. With nanosecond-fast photography we took detailed images of the pre-breakdown phenomena during the time when X-rays were registered. We found bipolar discharge structures, also called "pilot systems", in the vicinity of the cathode. As in our previous…
Spectroscopic characterization of a specific case of the atmospheric pressure air jet plasma in the transverse cw dc arc discharge of high voltage was done. Within the spectrum of wavelengths from 200 to 1100 nm all remarkable emissions were monitored, and all excited atomic lines of N, O, H and molecular bands of NO, N2, O2, OH, CO, CN were identified. Using relative intensities of analytical CuI lines 510.5, 515.3, 521.8 nm (the product of electrode emission) and N2 2+ -system band at 337.1 nm (the dominating component of plasma-forming gas), the temperature of electronic excitation of free …
We investigate streamer formation in the troposphere, in electric fields above the breakdown threshold. With fully three-dimensional particle simulations, we study the combined effect of natural background ionization and of photoionization on the discharge morphology. In previous investigations based on deterministic fluid models without background ionization, so-called double-headed streamers emerged. But in our improved model, many electron avalanches start to grow at different locations. Eventually the avalanches collectively screen the electric field in the interior of the discharge. This …
In a DC point-to-plane corona discharge reactor, the mono filamentary streamers cross the inter electrode gap with a natural repetition frequency of some tens of kHz. The discharge phase (including the primary and the secondary streamers development) lasts only some hundred of nanoseconds while the post-discharge phases occurring between two successive discharge phases last some tens of microseconds. From the point of view of chemical activation, the discharge phases create radical and excited species located inside the very thin discharge filaments while during the post-discharge phases these…
A 2D approach is used to simulate the properties of positive and negative streamers emerging from a high-voltage electrode in a long (14 cm) air gap for standard pressure and temperature. The applied voltage varies from 100 to 500 kV. To reveal the influence of photoionization, the calculations are made for various rates of seed electron generation in front of the streamer head. The difference between the properties of positive and negative streamers is associated with the different directions of the electron drift ahead of the streamer head. As a result, the peak electric field at the streame…
This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental study of plasma-assisted reforming of ethanol into molecular hydrogen in a new modification of the "tornado" type electrical discharge. Numerical modeling clarifies the nature of the non-thermal conversion and explains the kinetic mechanism of nonequilibrium plasma-chemical transformations in the gas-liquid system and the evolution of hydrogen during the reforming as a function of discharge parameters and ethanol-to-water ratio in the mixture. We also propose a scheme of chemical reactions for plasma kinetics description. It is …
Formation of near-cathode plasma at the instant of breakdown of the air gap was studied by the methods of picosecond laser probing. It was demonstrated that 1-2 ns after a sharp rise of the current through the discharge gap dense plasma clots with Ne~10^20 cm^-3 and dNe/dx ~ 10^24 cm^-4 are formed on the cathode surface. It was shown that these highly ionized regions lead to initiation and development of the spark channel originating from the cathode. We propose that the observed formations correspond to erosive plasma formed from the cathode material.
Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in air is characterized applying current measurement, numerical simulation and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). For OES, a non-calibrated spectrometer is used. This diagnostic method is applicable when cross-sectional area of the active plasma volume and current density can be determined. The nitrogen emission in the spectral range of 380 nm- 406 nm is used for OES diagnostics. Electric field in the active plasma volume is determined applying the measured spectrum, well-known Frank-Condon factors for nitrogen transitions and numerically- simulated electro…
We investigate structure and evolution of long positive spark breakdown; and we study at which stage pulses of hard X-rays are emitted. Positive high-voltage pulses of standardized lightning impulse wave form of about 1 MV were applied to about 1 meter of ambient air. The discharge evolution was imaged with a resolution of tens of nanoseconds with an intensified CCD camera. LaBr3(Ce+) scintillation detectors recorded the X-rays emitted during the process. The voltage and the currents on both electrodes were measured synchronously. All measurements indicate that first a large and dense corona o…
We discuss spatially and temporally adaptive implicit-explicit (IMEX) methods for parallel simulations of three-dimensional fluid streamer discharges in atmospheric air. We examine strategies for advancing the fluid equations and elliptic transport equations (e.g. Poisson) with different time steps, synchronizing them on a global physical time scale which is taken to be proportional to the dielectric relaxation time. The use of a longer time step for the electric field leads to numerical errors that can be diagnosed, and we quantify the conditions where this simplification is valid. Likewise, …
We present a space and time resolved interferometric plasma diagnostic for use on plasmas where neutral-bound electron contribution to the refractive index cannot be neglected. By recording simultaneously the plasma optical index at 532 and 1064 nm, we are able to extract independently the neutral and free electron density profiles. We report a phase resolution of 30 mrad, corresponding to a maximum resolution on the order of $4\times10^{23}~\mathrm{m}^{-3}$ for the electron density, and of $10^{24} ~ \mathrm{m}^{-3}$ for the neutral density. The interferometer is demonstrated on centimeter-sc…
It is by now well understood that large sprite discharges at the low air densities of the mesosphere are physically similar to small streamer discharges in air at standard temperature and pressure. This similarity is based on Townsend scaling with air density. First the theoretical basis of Townsend scaling and a list of six possible corrections to scaling are discussed; then the experimental evidence for the similarity between streamers and sprites is reviewed. We then discuss how far present sprite and streamer theory has been developed, and we show how streamer experiments can be interprete…
In this study, the impact of an air bubbler on the properties of plasma-activated water (PAW) was investigated in different configurations. A pencil plasma jet (PPJ) using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was used to prepare PAW. In one configuration, the air bubbler was fitted at the tip of the pencil plasma jet, causing the discharge gases to emerge as bubbles in the water. In another configuration, the water was agitated using the bubbler during plasma-water interaction. The plasma generated in the PPJ setup was a filamentary DBD micro-discharge. However, water agitation using the bubbl…
A leader is an electric discharge mechanism in long-air-gap discharges. In this work, we report the shock wave phenomenon in an air-gap leader discharge observed using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a time resolution of several microseconds. The continuous temporal evolution of the shock wave and the plasma channel was recorded and reproduced with a thermo-hydrodynamic model based on the measured current. The wave propagated at nearly the speed of sound, and the simulation results for the shock wave front positions and the plasma channel radius showed good consistency with the experimental…
The new results concerning neutron emission detection from a laboratory high-voltage discharge in the air are presented. Data were obtained with a combination of plastic scintillation detectors and $^3$He filled counters of thermal neutrons. Strong dependence of the hard x-ray and neutron radiation appearance on the field strength near electrodes, which is determined by their form, was found. We have revealed a more sophisticated temporal structure of the neutron bursts observed during of electric discharge. This may indicate different mechanisms for generating penetrating radiation at the tim…
To find a viable alternative to SF6 with growing climate change regulations, proper evaluation of alternatives such as compressed air ought to be done. For medium voltage applications, the withstand voltage is used as the dimensioning criteria and this is dependent on the initiation and propagation of streamers which are precursors to electrical breakdown. For design optimization, a thorough understanding of the initiation and propagation mechanisms of such electrical discharges under different stresses, pressure etc. ought to be studied experimentally and numerically also via a predictive mod…
We investigate the branching of positive streamers in air and present the first systematic investigation of splitting into more than two branches. We study discharges in 100 mbar artificial air that is exposed to voltage pulses of 10 kV applied to a needle electrode 160 mm above a grounded plate. By imaging the discharge with two cameras from three angles, we establish that about every 200th branching event is a branching into three. Branching into three occurs more frequently for the relatively thicker streamers. In fact, we find that the surface of the total streamer cross-sections before an…
Standard photographs of streamer discharges show a two-dimensional projection. We here present stereo-photographic images that resolve their three-dimensional structure. We describe the stereoscopic set-up and evaluation, and we present results for positive streamer discharges in air at 0.2 - 1 bar in a point plane geometry with a gap distance of 14 cm and a voltage pulse of 47 kV. In this case an approximately Gaussian distribution of branching angles of 43 degrees is found; these angles do not significantly depend on the distance from the needle or on the gas pressure.
Both fluid and particle models are commonly used to simulate streamer discharges. In this paper, we quantitatively study the agreement between these approaches for axisymmetric and 3D simulations of positive streamers in air. We use a drift-diffusion-reaction fluid model with the local field approximation and a PIC-MCC (particle-in-cell, Monte Carlo collision) particle model. The simulations are performed at 300 K and 1 bar in a 10 mm plate-plate gap with a 2 mm needle electrode. Applied voltages between 11.7 and 15.6 kV are used, which correspond to background fields of about 15 to 20 kV/cm. …
The results of the experiments on recording hard gamma radiation and measurements of its angular distribution at the initial stage of a laboratory high-voltage atmospheric discharge are presented. The experiments were performed on an ERG installation at a voltage of $\sim 1$ MV, an atmospheric discharge current of up to 12 kA, and a gap of 0.55 m. The duration of the voltage pulse was about 1~$μ$s with a pulse rise time of 150-200 ns. The radiation was recorded by an assembly of 10 identical scintillation detectors installed each 10$^\circ$ around the circumference of a quarter of a circle wit…
Pin-to-liquid discharges are investigated for the activation of liquids dedicated to agriculture applications. They are characterized through their electrical and optical properties, with a particular attention paid to their filaments and self-organized patterns occurring at the liquid interface. We show how modulating their interaction with ambient air can promote the production of reactive species in liquids such as H2O2, NO2- and NO3-. The effects of the resulting plasma activated media are reported on lentils seeds.
Major sterilization mechanisms are related to atoms and radicals, charged parti-cles, excited molecules, ozone, and UV radiation. The ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) are well known as evildoers. These species are easily created in ambient air and water and they live long enough to reach the cell and attack the organic matter. Test molecules conversion in dry and wet air is studied using Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) and Gliding Arc Reactors (GAR). The effects of tem-perature and energy deposition into the media on the active species production and then on the organic compounds degradation a…
The focusing of a secondary shock wave was experimentally recorded during the implementation of an extended nanosecond high-current discharge of a cylindrical configuration in air. Using high-speed shadowgraph recording (up to 300 000 frames/s) of the emerging unsteady flow, cylindrically symmetric gas-dynamic discontinuities were visualized: a diverging shock wave moving from the discharge plasma boundary, a diverging contact discontinuity separating the shock-heated gas from the nonequilibrium region excited by the discharge plasma, and also a converging compression wave (secondary shock wav…
The propagation mechanisms of plasma streamers have been observed and investigated in a surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) using 2D particle in cell simulations. The investigations are carried out under a simulated air mixture, 80\% N$_2$ and 20\% O$_2$, at atmospheric pressure, 100$\,$kPa, under both DC conditions and a pulsed DC waveform that represent AC conditions. The simulated geometry is a simplification of the symmetric and fully exposed SDBD resulting in the simultaneous ignition of both positive and negative streamers on either side of the Al$_2$O$_3$ dielectric barrier. In …
A microwave discharge of atmospheric pressure, maintained by focused CW radiation of a 24-GHz gyrotron in an argon flow in an external air atmosphere, was investigated. The electron temperature was determined by the current-voltage curve of a dual Langmuir probe placed in a plasma torch. The electron temperature was also estimated from plasma emission spectra within the framework of a coronal plasma model. The obtained values of the electron temperature coincide within the measurement accuracy. Also, the electron temperature is many times higher than the gas temperature. This fact allows us to…
Pictures show that streamer or sprite discharge channels emerging from the same electrode sometimes seem to reconnect or merge though their heads carry electric charge of the same polarity; one might therefore suspect that reconnections are an artifact of the two-dimensional projection in the pictures. Here we use stereo-photography to investigate the full three-dimensional structure of such events. We analyze reconnection, possibly an electrostatic effect in which a late thin streamer reconnects to an earlier thick streamer channel, and merging, a suggested photoionization effect in which two…
Recently, a comparison of six codes for streamer discharge simulations were performed in [1]. In this comment, we discuss about the big differences between the results obtained by the different codes using the same deterministic model, and raise questions on the convergence of the codes and the minimum spatial resolution that are required for a converged results.

Positive streamer discharges have been studied and modelled extensively in air. Here we study positive streamers in CO$_2$ with and without oxygen admixtures; they are relevant for current high voltage technology as well as for discharges in the atmosphere of Venus. We discuss that no efficient photoionization mechanism is known for gases with a large CO$_2$ fraction, as photons in the relevant energy range are rapidly absorbed. Hence positive streamers can propagate only due to some other source of free electrons ahead of the ionization front. Therefore we study positive streamer propagation …

We study long time series of the ion saturation current and floating potential, sampled by Langmuir probes dwelled in the outboard mid-plane scrape off layer and embedded in the lower divertor baffle of Alcator C-Mod. A series of ohmically heated L-mode plasma discharges is investigated with line-averaged plasma density ranging from n_e/n_G = 0.15 to 0.42, where n_G is the Greenwald density. All ion saturation current time series that are sampled in the far scrape-off layer are characterized by large-amplitude burst events. Coefficients of skewness and excess kurtosis of the time series obey a…
The numerical simulation of an air spark gap has been carried within two theoretical models. The kinetic one [1] allowed us to calculate time dependencies for the residual resistance (0.2 - 0.4 Ohm for our selection of a circuit parameters), the spark gap channel width, the electron number density, the mobility, the conductivity, the ionization degree, the magnetic field in the discharge channel, the channel inductance and the electron drift velocity. Simulating a real circuit and taking into account a spark gap residual resistance demonstrates good agreement of both models with the experiment…
