We present an inverse method to construct large classes of chaotic invariant sets together with their exact statistics. The associated dynamical systems are characterized by a probability distribution and a two-form. While our emphasis is on classical systems, we briefly speculate about possible applications to quantum field theory, in the context of generalizations of stochastic quantization.
Large deviations in chaotic dynamics have potentially significant and dramatic consequences. We study large deviations of series of finite lengths $N$ generated by chaotic maps. The distributions generally display an exponential decay with $N$, associated with large-deviation (rate) functions. We obtain the exact rate functions analytically for the doubling, tent, and logistic maps. For the latter two, the solution is given as a power series whose coefficients can be systematically calculated to any order. We also obtain the rate function for the cat map numerically, uncovering strong evidence…
In this letter, we demonstrate that a non-Hermitian Random Matrix description can account for both spectral and spatial statistics of resonance states in a weakly open chaotic wave system with continuously distributed losses. More specifically, the statistics of resonance states in an open 2D chaotic microwave cavity are investigated by solving the Maxwell equations with lossy boundaries subject to Ohmic dissipation. We successfully compare the statistics of its complex-valued resonance states and associated widths with analytical predictions based on a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian mode…
We study chaotic orbits of conservative low--dimensional maps and present numerical results showing that the probability density functions (pdfs) of the sum of $N$ iterates in the large $N$ limit exhibit very interesting time-evolving statistics. In some cases where the chaotic layers are thin and the (positive) maximal Lyapunov exponent is small, long--lasting quasi--stationary states (QSS) are found, whose pdfs appear to converge to $q$--Gaussians associated with nonextensive statistical mechanics. More generally, however, as $N$ increases, the pdfs describe a sequence of QSS that pass from …
For a prepared state exact expressions for the time dependent mean fidelity as well as for the mean inverse paricipation ratio are obtained analytically. The distribution function of fidelity in the long time limit and of inverse participation ratio are studied numerically and analytically. Surprising features like fidelity revival and enhanced non--ergodicity are observed. The role of the coupling coefficients and of complexity of background is studied as well.
Using the Random Matrix Theory approach we derive explicit distributions of the real and imaginary parts for off-diagonal entries of the Wigner reaction matrix $\mathbf{K}$ for wave chaotic scattering in systems with and without time-reversal invariance, in the presence of an arbitrary uniform absorption.
Typical eigenstates of quantum systems, whose classical limit is chaotic, are well approximated as random states. Corresponding eigenvalue spectra is modeled through appropriate ensemble of random matrix theory. However, a small subset of states violate this principle and display eigenstate localization, a counter-intuitive feature known to arise due to purely quantum or semiclassical effects. In the spectrum of chaotic systems, the localized and random states interact with one another and modifies the spectral statistics. In this work, a $3 \times 3$ random matrix model is used to obtain exac…
The statistical properties of wave chaotic systems of varying dimensionalities and realizations have been studied extensively. These systems are commonly characterized by the statistics of the eigenmode-spacings and the statistics of the eigenfunctions. Here, we propose photonic crystal (PC) defect waveguide graphs as a new physical setting for chaotic graph studies. Photonic crystal waveguides possess a dispersion relation for the propagating modes which is engineerable. Graphs constructed by joining these waveguides possess junctions and bends with distinct scattering properties. We present …
In this review, a model (the Random Coupling Model) that gives a statistical description of the coupling of radiation into and out of large enclosures through localized and/or distributed channels is presented. The Random Coupling Model combines both deterministic and statistical phenomena. The model makes use of wave chaos theory to extend the classical modal description of the cavity fields in the presence of boundaries that lead to chaotic ray trajectories. The model is based on a clear separation between the universal statistical behavior of the isolated chaotic system, and the determinist…
We study the quantum mechanics of a billiard (Robnik 1983) in the regime of mixed-type classical phase space (the shape parameter λ=0.15) at very high-lying eigenstates, starting at about 1.000.000th eigenstate and including the consecutive 587654 eigenstates. By calculating the normalized Poincaré Husimi functions of the eigenstates and comparing them with the classical phase space structure, we introduce the overlap criterion which enables us to separate with great accuracy and reliability the regular and chaotic eigenstates, and the corresponding energies. The chaotic eigenstates appear all…
To treat the spectral statistics of quantum maps and flows that are fully chaotic classically, we use the rigorous Riemann-Siegel lookalike available for the spectral determinant of unitary time evolution operators $F$. Concentrating on dynamics without time reversal invariance we get the exact two-point correlator of the spectral density for finite dimension $N$ of the matrix representative of $F$, as phenomenologically given by random matrix theory. In the limit $N\to\infty$ the correlator of the Gaussian unitary ensemble is recovered. Previously conjectured cancellations of contributions of…
We demonstrate that the energy or quasienergy level spacing distribution in dynamically localized chaotic eigenstates is excellently described by the Brody distribution, displaying the fractional power law level repulsion. This we show in two paradigmatic systems, namely for the fully chaotic eigenstates of the kicked rotator at K=7, and for the chaotic eigenstates in the mixed-type billiard system (Robnik 1983), after separating the regular and chaotic eigenstates by means of the Poincaré Husimi function, at very high energies with great statistical significance (587654 eigenstates, starting …
An assumption of smooth response to small parameter changes, of statistics or long-time averages of a chaotic system, is generally made in the field of sensitivity analysis, and the parametric derivatives of statistical quantities are critically used in science and engineering. In this paper, we propose a numerical procedure to assess the differentiability of statistics with respect to parameters in chaotic systems. We numerically show that the existence of the derivative depends on the Lebesgue-integrability of a certain density gradient function, which we define as the derivative of logarith…
It is well known that chaotic dynamic systems (such as three-body system, turbulent flow and so on) have the sensitive dependance on initial conditions (SDIC). Unfortunately, numerical noises (such as truncation error and round-off error) always exist in practice. Thus, due to the SDIC, long-term accurate prediction of chaotic dynamic systems is practically impossible, and therefore numerical simulations of chaos are only mixtures of "true" solution with physical meanings and numerical noises without physical meanings. However, it is traditionally believed that statistic computations based on …
Parametric Correlations of Phase Shifts and Statistics of Time Delays in Quantum Chaotic Scattering: Crossover between Unitary and Orthogonal Symmetries
Homoclinic and unstable periodic orbits in chaotic systems play central roles in various semiclassical sum rules. The interferences between terms are governed by the action functions and Maslov indices. In this article, we identify geometric relations between homoclinic and unstable periodic orbits, and derive exact formulae expressing the periodic orbit classical actions in terms of corresponding homoclinic orbit actions plus certain phase space areas. The exact relations provide a basis for approximations of the periodic orbit actions as action differences between homoclinic orbits with well…
For chaotic scattering on quantum graphs, the semiclassical approximation is exact. We use this fact and employ supersymmetry, the colour-flavour transformation, and the saddle-point approximation to calculate the exact expression for the lowest and asymptotic expressions in the Ericson regime for all higher correlation functions of the scattering matrix. Our results agree with those available from the random-matrix approach to chaotic scattering. We conjecture that our results hold universally for quantum-chaotic scattering.
This article presents a study of the electromagnetic response of a chaotic reverberation chamber (RC) in the presence of losses. By means of simulations and of experiments, the fluctuations in the maxima of the field obtained in a conventional mode-stirred RC are compared with those in a chaotic RC in the neighborhood of the Lowest Useable Frequency (LUF). The present work illustrates that the universal spectral and spatial statistical properties of chaotic RCs allow to meet more adequately the criteria required by the Standard IEC 61000-4-21 to perform tests of electromagnetic compatibility.
Distributions of eigenmodes are widely concerned in both bounded and open systems. In the realm of chaos, counting resonances can characterize the underlying dynamics (regular vs. chaotic), and is often instrumental to identify classical-to-quantum correspondence. Here, we study, both theoretically and experimentally, the statistics of chaotic resonances in an optical microcavity with a mixed phase space of both regular and chaotic dynamics. Information on the number of chaotic modes is extracted by counting regular modes, which couple to the former via dynamical tunneling. The experimental da…
Unstable nonchaotic solutions embedded in the chaotic attractor can provide significant new insight into chaotic dynamics of both low- and high-dimensional systems. In particular, in turbulent fluid flows, such unstable solutions are referred to as exact coherent structures (ECS) and play an important role in both initiating and sustaining turbulence. The nature of ECS and their role in organizing spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics, however, is reasonably well understood only for systems on relatively small spatial domains lacking continuous Euclidean symmetries. Construction of ECS on large do…
We derive a trace formula that expresses the level density of chaotic many-body systems as a smooth term plus a sum over contributions associated to solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger (or Gross-Pitaevski) equation. Our formula applies to bosonic systems with discretised positions, such as the Bose-Hubbard model, in the semiclassical limit as well as in the limit where the number of particles is taken to infinity. We use the trace formula to investigate the spectral statistics of these systems, by studying interference between solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We show that in…
We investigate the nearest level spacing statistics of open chaotic wave systems. To this end we derive the spacing distributions for the three Wigner ensembles in the one-channel case. The theoretical results give a clear physical meaning of the modifications on the spacing distributions produced by the coupling to the environment. Based on the analytical expressions obtained, we then propose general expressions of the spacing distributions for any number of channels, valid from weak to strong coupling. The latter expressions contain one free parameter. The surmise is successfully compared wi…
In this study we discuss the shapes and statistics of the rogue (freak) waves emerging due to wave-current interactions. With this purpose, we use a simple governing equation which is a nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) extended by R. Smith (1976). This extended NLSE accounts for the effects of current gradient on the nonlinear dynamics of the ocean surface near blocking point. Using a split-step scheme we show that the extended NLSE of Smith is unstable against random chaotic perturbation in the current profile. Therefore the monochromatic wave field with unit amplitude turns into a chaot…
We investigate the statistical properties of the complexness parameter which characterizes uniquely complexness (biorthogonality) of resonance eigenstates of open chaotic systems. Specifying to the regime of isolated resonances, we apply the random matrix theory to the effective Hamiltonian formalism and derive analytically the probability distribution of the complexness parameter for two statistical ensembles describing the systems invariant under time reversal. For those with rigid spectra, we consider a Hamiltonian characterized by a picket-fence spectrum without spectral fluctuations. Then…
Homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits provide a skeleton of the full dynamics of a chaotic dynamical system and are the foundation of semiclassical sums for quantum wave packet, coherent state, and transport quantities. Here, the homoclinic orbits are organized according to the complexity of their phase-space excursions, and exact relations are derived expressing the relative classical actions of complicated orbits as linear combinations of those with simpler excursions plus phase-space cell areas bounded by stable and unstable manifolds. The total number of homoclinic orbits increases exponentia…
Recently formulated integrable theory of quantum transport [Osipov and Kanzieper, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 176804 (2008); arXiv:0806.2784] is extended to describe sample-to-sample fluctuations of the noise power in chaotic cavities with broken time-reversal symmetry. Concentrating on the universal transport regime, we determine dependence of the noise power cumulants on the temperature, applied bias voltage, and the number of propagating modes in the leads. Intrinsic connection between statistics of thermal to shot noise crossover and statistics of Landauer conductance is revealed and briefly dis…
The scattering matrix approach is employed to determine a joint probability density function of reflection eigenvalues for chaotic cavities coupled to the outside world through both ballistic and tunnel point contacts. Derived under assumption of broken time-reversal symmetry, this result is further utilised to (i) calculate the density and correlation functions of reflection eigenvalues, and (ii) analyse fluctuations properties of the Landauer conductance for the illustrative example of asymmetric chaotic cavity. Further extensions of the theory are pinpointed.
Classically integrable approximants are here constructed for a family of predominantly chaotic periodic systems by means of the Baker-Hausdorff-Campbell formula. We compare the evolving wave density for the corresponding exact quantum systems using semiclassical approximations based alternatively on the chaotic and on the integrable trajectories. It is found that the latter reproduce the quantum oscillations and provide superior approximations even when the initial coherent state is placed in a broad chaotic region. Time regimes are then accessed in which the propagation based on the system's …
We demonstrate the existence of exact atypical many-body eigenstates in a class of disordered, interacting one-dimensional quantum systems that includes the Fermi-Hubbard model as a special case. These atypical eigenstates, which generically have finite energy density and are exponentially many in number, are populated by noninteracting excitations. They can exhibit Anderson localization with area-law eigenstate entanglement or, surprisingly, ballistic transport at any disorder strength. These properties differ strikingly from those of typical eigenstates nearby in energy, which we show give r…
We study the statistical properties of the time delay matrix $Q$ in the context of quantum transport through a chaotic cavity, in the absence of time-reversal invariance. First, we approach the problem from the point of view of random matrix theory, and obtain exact results that provide the average value of any polynomial function of $Q$. We then consider the problem from the point of view of the semiclassical approximation, obtaining the entire perturbation series for some energy-dependent correlation functions. Using these correlation functions, we show agreement between the random matrix an…
