Recently formulated integrable theory of quantum transport [Osipov and Kanzieper, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 176804 (2008); arXiv:0806.2784] is extended to describe sample-to-sample fluctuations of the noise power in chaotic cavities with broken time-reversal symmetry. Concentrating on the universal transport regime, we determine dependence of the noise power cumulants on the temperature, applied bias voltage, and the number of propagating modes in the leads. Intrinsic connection between statistics of thermal to shot noise crossover and statistics of Landauer conductance is revealed and briefly discussed.
We determine the joint probability density function (JPDF) of reflection eigenvalues in three Dyson's ensembles of normal-conducting chaotic cavities coupled to the outside world through both ballistic and tunnel point contacts. Expressing the JPDF in terms of hypergeometric functions of matrix arguments (labeled by the Dyson index $β$), we further show that reflection eigenvalues form a determinantal ensemble at $β=2$ and a new type of a Pfaffian ensemble at $β=4$. As an application, we derive a simple analytic expression for the concurrence distribution describing production of orbitally ent…
The scattering matrix approach is employed to determine a joint probability density function of reflection eigenvalues for chaotic cavities coupled to the outside world through both ballistic and tunnel point contacts. Derived under assumption of broken time-reversal symmetry, this result is further utilised to (i) calculate the density and correlation functions of reflection eigenvalues, and (ii) analyse fluctuations properties of the Landauer conductance for the illustrative example of asymmetric chaotic cavity. Further extensions of the theory are pinpointed.
We derive the joint distribution of the moments $\mathrm{Tr}\, Q^κ$ ($κ\geq0$) of the Wigner-Smith matrix for a chaotic cavity supporting a large number of scattering channels $n$. This distribution turns out to be asymptotically Gaussian, and we compute explicitly averages and covariances. The results are in a compact form and have been verified numerically. The general methodology of proof and computations has a wide range of applications.
We employ the Random Matrix Theory framework to calculate the density of zeroes of an $M$-channel scattering matrix describing a chaotic cavity with a single localized absorber embedded in it. Our approach extends beyond the weak-coupling limit of the cavity with the channels and applies for any absorption strength. Importantly it provides an insight for the optimal amount of loss needed to realize a chaotic coherent perfect absorbing (CPA) trap. Our predictions are tested against simulations for two types of traps: a complex network of resonators and quantum graphs.
We consider statistics of electronic transport in chaotic cavities where time-reversal symmetry is broken and one of the leads is weakly non-ideal, i.e. it contains tunnel barriers characterized by tunneling probabilities $Γ_i$. Using symmetric function expansions and a generalized Selberg integral, we develop a systematic perturbation theory in $1-Γ_i$ valid for arbitrary number of channels, and obtain explicit formulas up to second order for the average and variance of the conductance, and for the average shot-noise. Higher moments of the conductance are considered to leading order.
The Painlevé transcendents discovered at the turn of the XX century by pure mathematical reasoning, have later made their surprising appearance -- much in the way of Wigner's "miracle of appropriateness" -- in various problems of theoretical physics. The notable examples include the two-dimensional Ising model, one-dimensional impenetrable Bose gas, corner and polynuclear growth models, one dimensional directed polymers, string theory, two dimensional quantum gravity, and spectral distributions of random matrices. In the present contribution, ideas of integrability are utilized to advocate eme…
We consider the $1/N$-expansion of the moments of the proper delay times for a ballistic chaotic cavity supporting $N$ scattering channels. In the random matrix approach, these moments correspond to traces of negative powers of Wishart matrices. For systems with and without broken time reversal symmetry (Dyson indices $β=1$ and $β=2$) we obtain a recursion relation, which efficiently generates the coefficients of the $1/N$-expansion of the moments. The integrality of these coefficients and their possible diagrammatic interpretation is discussed.
We collect explicit and user-friendly expressions for one-point densities of the real eigenvalues $\{λ_i\}$ of $N\times N$ Wishart-Laguerre and Jacobi random matrices with orthogonal, unitary and symplectic symmetry. Using these formulae, we compute integer moments $τ_n=<\sum_{i=1}^Nλ_i^n>$ for all symmetry classes without any large $N$ approximation. In particular, our results provide exact expressions for moments of transmission eigenvalues in chaotic cavities with time-reversal or spin-flip symmetry and supporting a finite and arbitrary number of electronic channels in the two incoming lead…
Applying random matrix theory to quantum transport in chaotic cavities, we develop a novel approach to computation of the moments of the conductance and shot-noise (including their joint moments) of arbitrary order and at any number of open channels. The method is based on the Selberg integral theory combined with the theory of symmetric functions and is applicable equally well for systems with and without time-reversal symmetry. We also compute higher-order cumulants and perform their detailed analysis. In particular, we establish an explicit form of the leading asymptotic of the cumulants in…
A strategy to evaluate the distribution of the largest Schmidt eigenvalue for entangled random pure states of bipartite systems is proposed. We point out that the multiple integral defining the sought quantity for a bipartition of sizes N, M is formally identical (upon simple algebraic manipulations) to the one providing the probability density of Landauer conductance in open chaotic cavities supporting N and M electronic channels in the two leads. Known results about the latter can then be straightforwardly employed in the former problem for both systems with broken (β = 2) and preserved (β =…
Using the concept of minimal chaotic cavities, we give the distribution of the proper delay times of $Q=-i\hbar S^\dagger \frac{\partial S}{\partial E}$ at the spectrum edge with a scattering matrix $S$ belonging to circular ensembles CE. The three classes of symmetry ($β=1$, 2 and 4) will be analyzed to show how it differs from the distribution obtained in the bulk of the spectrum. In this new class of universality at the spectrum edge, more attention will be given to the Wigner time $τ_w=tr(Q)$ and its distribution will be given analytically in the case of 2 modes scattering. The results wil…
Within the random matrix theory approach to quantum scattering, we derive the distribution of the Wigner-Smith time delay matrix $\mathcal{Q}$ for a chaotic cavity with uniform absorption, coupled via $N$ perfect channels. In the unitary class $β=2$ we obtain a compact expression for the distribution of the full matrix in terms of a matrix integral. In the other symmetry classes we derive the joint distribution of the eigenvalues. We show how the large $N$ properties of this distribution can be analysed in terms of two interacting Coulomb gases living on two different supports. As an applicati…
We demonstrate a previously unobserved nonlinear phenomenon in an ultra-low loss quartz Bulk Acoustic Wave cavity ($Q>3\times10^9$), which only occurs below 20 milli-Kelvin in temperature and under relatively weak pumping. The phenomenon reveals the emergence of several stable equilibria (at least two foci and two nodes) and jumps between these quasi states at random times. The degree of this randomness as well as separations between levels can be controlled by the frequency of the incident carrier signal. It is demonstrated that the nature of the effect lays beyond the standard Duffing model.
We study the crossover between thermal and shot-noise power in a chaotic quantum dot in the presence of non-ideal contacts at finite temperature. The result explicitly demonstrates that the temperature affect the suppression-amplification effect present in the main quantum noise. In particular, the weak localization contribution to the noise has an anomalous thermal behavior when one let the barriers vary, indicating the presence of a critical point related to specific value of the tunneling barriers. We also show how to get to the opaque limit of the quantum dot at finite temperature.
We consider the conductance distributions in chaotic mesoscopic cavities for all three invariant classes of random matrices for the arbitrary number of channels N1, N2 in the connecting leads. We show that the Laplace transforms of the distributions can be expressed in terms of determinants in the unitary case and Pfaffians in the orthogonal and symplectic cases. The inverse Laplace transforms then give the exact distributions. This formalism is particularly useful for small values of N = min (N1, N2), and thus is of direct experimental relevance. We also obtain the conductance distributions f…
Parametric Correlations of Phase Shifts and Statistics of Time Delays in Quantum Chaotic Scattering: Crossover between Unitary and Orthogonal Symmetries
We present an experimental study of missing level statistics of three-dimensional chaotic microwave cavities. The investigation is reinforced by the power spectrum of level fluctuations analysis which also takes into account the missing levels. On the basis of our data sets we demonstrate that the power spectrum of level fluctuations in combination with short- and long-range spectral fluctuations provides a powerful tool for the determination of the fraction of randomly missing levels in systems that display wave chaos such as the three-dimensional chaotic microwave cavities. The experimental …
We consider multi-terminal mesoscopic transport through a well-conducting chaotic quantum cavity using random matrix theory. Four-probe resistance vanishes on the average and is not affected by weak localization. Its fluctuations are given by a single expression valid for arbitrary temperature, ac frequency, non-ideal coupling of the contacts, and in the presence of floating probes; surprisingly, they are governed by the dwell time only. In contrast, the two-probe transport additionally depends on the RC-time, which is interpreted as a property of the measurement scheme. We also predict a univ…
Using the joint distribution for proper time-delays of a chaotic cavity derived by Brouwer, Frahm & Beenakker [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 78}, 4737 (1997)], we obtain, in the limit of large number of channels $N$, the large deviation function for the distribution of the Wigner time-delay (the sum of proper times) by a Coulomb gas method. We show that the existence of a power law tail originates from narrow resonance contributions, related to a (second order) freezing transition in the Coulomb gas.
We study a chaotic quantum transport in the presence of a weak spin-orbit interaction. Our theory covers the whole symmetry crossover regime between time-reversal invariant systems with and without a spin-orbit interaction. This situation is experimentally realizable when the spin-orbit interaction is controlled in a conductor by applying an electric field. We utilize a semiclassical approach which has recently been developed. In this approach, the non-Abelian nature of the spin diffusion along a classical trajectory plays a crucial role. New analytical expressions with one crossover parameter…
We address frequency-dependent quantum transport through mesoscopic conductors in the semiclassical limit. By generalizing the trajectory-based semiclassical theory of dc quantum transport to the ac case, we derive the average screened conductance as well as ac weak-localization corrections for chaotic conductors. Thereby we confirm respective random matrix results and generalize them by accounting for Ehrenfest time effects. We consider the case of a cavity connected through many leads to a macroscopic circuit which contains ac-sources. In addition to the reservoir the cavity itself is capaci…
We bring together the semiclassical approximation, matrix integrals and the theory of symmetric polynomials in order to solve a long standing problem in the field of quantum chaos: to compute transport moments when tunnel barriers are present and the number of open channels, $M$, is small. In contrast to previous approaches, ours is non-perturbative in $M$; instead, we arrive at an explicit expression in the form of a power series in the barrier's reflectivity, whose coefficients are rational functions of $M$. For general moments we must require that the barriers are equal and time reversal sy…
