We prove the complete asymptotic expansion of the integrated density of states of a two-dimensional Schrodinger operator with a smooth periodic potential
In this paper we constructively determine a family of the spectral invariants of the multidimensional Schrodinger operator with a periodic potential by the given band functions.
We construct multidimensional almost-periodic Schrödinger operators whose spectrum has zero lower box counting dimension. In particular, the spectrum in these cases is a generalized Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure.
This is a survey of recent progress on the irreducibility of Fermi varieties, rigidity results and embedded eigenvalue problems of discrete periodic Schrödinger operators.
We prove the complete asymptotic expansion of the integrated density of states of a Schrodinger operator H = -Δ+ b acting in R^d when the potential b is either smooth periodic, or generic quasi-periodic (finite linear combination of exponentials), or belongs to a wide class of almost-periodic functions.
We show that a generic quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ has purely singular spectrum. That is, for any minimal translation flow on a finite-dimensional torus, there is a residual set of continuous sampling functions such that for each of these sampling functions, the Schrödinger operator with the resulting potential has empty absolutely continuous spectrum.
We consider Schrödinger operators with periodic potentials on periodic discrete graphs. Their spectrum consists of a finite number of bands. We determine trace formulas for the Schrödinger operators. The proof is based on the decomposition of the Schrödinger operators into a direct integral and a specific representation of fiber operators. The traces of the fiber operators are expressed as finite Fourier series of the quasimomentum. The coefficients of the Fourier series are given in terms of the potentials and cycles in the quotient graph from some specific cycle sets. We also present the tra…
We consider the Riemannian universal covering of a compact manifold $M = X / Γ$ and assume that $Γ$ is amenable. We show for an ergodic random family of Schrödinger operators on $X$ the existence of a (non-random) integrated density of states.
We exhibit d-dimensional limit-periodic Schrodinger operators that are uniformly localized in the strongest sense possible. That is, for each of these operators, there is a uniform exponential decay rate such that every element of the hull of the corresponding Schrodinger operator has a complete set of eigenvectors that decay exponentially off their centers of localization at least as fast as prescribed by the uniform decay rate. Consequently, these operators exhibit uniform dynamical localization.
The problem of absence of eigenvalues imbedded into the continuous spectrum is considered for a Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential perturbed by a sufficiently fast decaying ``impurity'' potential. Results of this type have previously been known for the one-dimensional case only. Absence of embedded eigenvalues is shown in dimensions two and three if the corresponding Fermi surface is irreducible modulo natural symmetries. It is conjectured that all periodic potentials satisfy this condition. Separable periodic potentials satisfy it, and hence in dimensions two and three Schrödinger…
We consider Schrödinger operators on the real line with limit-periodic potentials and show that, generically, the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure and all spectral measures are purely singular continuous. Moreover, we show that for a dense set of limit-periodic potentials, the spectrum of the associated Schrödinger operator has Hausdorff dimension zero. In both results one can introduce a coupling constant $λ\in (0,\infty)$, and the respective statement then holds simultaneously for all values of the coupling constant.

We prove asymptotic formulas of Szegő type for the periodic Schrödinger operator $H=-\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+V$ in dimension one. Admitting fairly general functions $h$ with $h(0)=0$, we study the trace of the operator $h(χ_{(-α,α)}χ_{(-\infty,μ)}(H)χ_{(-α,α)})$ and link its subleading behaviour as $α\to\infty$ to the position of the spectral parameter $μ$ relative to the spectrum of $H$.
We show that, under some very weak assumption of effective variation for the magnetic field, a periodic Schrödinger operator with magnetic wells on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \R)=0$ equipped with a properly disconnected, cocompact action of a finitely generated, discrete group of isometries has an arbitrarily large number of spectral gaps in the semi-classical limit.
We consider Schrödinger operators $H^h = (ih d+{\bf A})^* (ih d+{\bf A})$ with the periodic magnetic field ${\bf B}=d{\bf A}$ on covering spaces of compact manifolds. Under some assumptions on $\bf B$, we prove that there are arbitrarily large number of gaps in the spectrum of these operators in the semiclassical limit of strong magnetic field $h\to 0$.
We survey recent results on spectral properties of random Schrödinger operators. The focus is set on the integrated density of states (IDS). First we present a proof of the existence of a self-averaging IDS which is general enough to be applicable to random Schrödinger and Laplace-Beltrami operators on manifolds. Subsequently we study more specific models in Euclidean space, namely of alloy type, and concentrate on the regularity properties of the IDS. We discuss the role of the integrated density of states and its regularity properties for the spectral analysis of random Schrödinger operators…
A periodic Schrödinger operator on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \mathbb R)=0$ endowed with a properly discontinuous cocompact isometric action of a discrete group is considered. Under some additional conditions on the magnetic field existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of such an operator in the semiclassical limit is established. The proofs are based on the study of the tunneling effect in the corresponding quantum system.
We generalize the approach to localization in one dimension introduced by Kunz-Souillard, and refined by Delyon-Kunz-Souillard and Simon, in the early 1980's in such a way that certain correlations are allowed. Several applications of this generalized Kunz-Souillard method to almost periodic Schrödinger operators are presented. On the one hand, we show that the Schrödinger operators on $l^2(\mathbb{Z})$ with limit-periodic potential that have pure point spectrum form a dense subset in the space of all limit-periodic Schrödinger operators on $l^2(\mathbb{Z})$. More generally, for any bounded po…
We show that the spectrum of a discrete two-dimensional periodic Schrödinger operator on a square lattice with a sufficiently small potential is an interval, provided the period is odd in at least one dimension. In general, we show that the spectrum may consist of at most two intervals and that a gap may only open at energy zero. This sharpens several results of Krüger and may be thought of as a discrete version of the Bethe--Sommerfeld conjecture. We also describe an application to the study of two-dimensional almost-periodic operators.
We consider the quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator with the non-degenerate Gevrey potential for the Diophantine frequency. We prove that if the coupling number of the potential is large, then the spectrum is homogeneous.
In this paper we study spectral properties of a family of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on the real line in the adiabatic limit. We assume that the adiabatic iso-energetic curve has a real branch that is extended along the momentum direction. In the energy intervals where this happens, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Lyapunov exponent and show that the spectrum is purely singular. This result was conjectured and proved in a particular case by Fedotov and Klopp in \cite{FEKL1}.
We prove the existence of ballistic transport for the Schrödinger operator with limit-periodic or quasi-periodic potential in dimension two. This is done under certain regularity assumptions on the potential which have been used in prior work to establish the existence of an absolutely continuous component and other spectral properties. The latter include detailed information on the structure of generalized eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. These allow to establish the crucial ballistic lower bound through integration by parts on an appropriate extension of a Cantor set in momentum space, as wel…
We consider the Schrödinger operator in ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, with the electric potential $V$ and the magnetic potential $A$ being periodic functions (with a common period lattice) and prove absolute continuity of the spectrum of the operator in question under some conditions which, in particular, are satisfied if $V\in L^{n/2}_{\mathrm {loc}}({\mathbb R}^n)$ and $A\in H^q_{\mathrm {loc}}({\mathbb R}^n;{\mathbb R}^n)$, $q>(n-1)/2$.
We show that formal Schrödinger operators with singular potentials from the space W^{-1}_{2,unif}(R) can be naturally defined to give selfadjoint and bounded below operators, which depend continuously in the uniform resolvent sense on the potential in the W^{-1}_{2,unif}(R)-norm. In the case of periodic singular potentials we also establish pure absolute continuity and a band and gap structure of the spectrum thus generalising some classical results for singular potentials of one-dimensional quasicrystal theory.
Necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of boundary value problem of Schrodinger equation are obtained in linear and nonlinear cases. Periodic analytical solutions are represented using generalized Green's operator
We consider decaying oscillatory perturbations of periodic Schrödinger operators on the half line. More precisely, the perturbations we study satisfy a generalized bounded variation condition at infinity and an $L^p$ decay condition. We show that the absolutely continuous spectrum is preserved, and give bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the singular part of the resulting perturbed measure. Under additional assumptions, we instead show that the singular part embedded in the essential spectrum is contained in an explicit countable set. Finally, we demonstrate that this explicit countable set …
Recently, a trace formula for non-self-adjoint periodic Schrödinger operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ associated with Dirichlet eigenvalues was proved in [9]. Here we prove a corresponding trace formula associated with Neumann eigenvalues. In addition we investigate Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of such operators. In particular, using the Dirichlet and Neumann trace formulas we provide detailed information on location of the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues for the model operator with the potential $Ke^{2ix}$, where $K\in\mathbb{C}$.
For non-self-adjoint almost-periodic Schrödinger operators, a criterion is given to guarantee that they have both the same spectrum and same Lyapunov exponents with the discrete free Laplacian. As a byproduct, we show that the Moser-Pöschel argument for opening gaps may not be valid for non-self-adjoint operators.
We prove $t^{- \frac 14}-$decay for the solutions of the 1-dim Schrodinger equation with a one-gap periodic potential as $t \to +\infty $. Generically, one has $t^{- \frac 13}$-decay and this decay is optimal. Our approach is to analyze the stationary phase in the Schrödinger evolution as an integral operator.
We quantify the coupling asymptotics for the Lyapunov-exponent of a one-frequency quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator with analytic potential sampling function. The result refines the well-known lower bound of the Lyapunov-exponent by Sorets and Spencer.
In this paper we obtain asymptotic formulas of arbitrary order for the Bloch eigenvalues and Bloch functions of the Schrodinger operator of arbitrary dimension, with periodic, with respect to arbitrary lattice, potential. Moreover, we estimate the measure of the isoenergetic surfaces in the high energy region.
We study the one-dimensional discrete quasi-periodic Schrodinger equation. We introduce the notion of variations of potential and use it to define "typical" potential. We show that for typical C^3 potential, if the coupling constant is large, then for most frequencies, the Lyapunov exponent is positive for all energies.
In this paper, we study spectral properties of a family of quasi-periodic Schrodinger operators on the real line in the adiabatic limit. We assume that the adiabatic iso-energetic curves are extended along the momentum direction. In the energy intervals where this happens, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Lyapunov exponent, and show that the spectrum is purely singular.
In this paper we define a discrete generalized Laplacian with arbitrary real power on a Cayley tree. This Laplacian is used to define a discrete generalized Schrödinger operator on the tree. The case discrete fractional Schrödinger operators with index $0 < α< 2$ is considered in detail, and periodic solutions of the corresponding fractional Schrödinger equations are described. This periodicity depends on a subgroup of a group representation of the Cayley tree. For any subgroup of finite index we give a criterion for eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator under which periodic solutions exist.…
We consider one-dimensional quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators with analytic potentials. In the positive Lyapunov exponent regime, we prove large deviation estimates which lead to optimal Hölder continuity of the Lyapunov exponents and the integrated density of states, in both small Lyapunov exponent and large coupling regimes. Our results cover all the Diophantine frequencies and some Liouville frequencies.
In this paper we study on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ the quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator $H=-Δ+ λV(x),$ where $V$ is a real analytic quasi-periodic function and $λ>0$. We first show that $H$ has no eigenvalues in \textit{low energy region}. We also provide in \textit{low energy region} the new phase transition parameter, i.e. the competition between the strength of coupling and the length for frequencies.
We consider the one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator with complex-valued sparse periodic potential. The spectrum for a complex-valued periodic potential is a complicated compact set in the complex plane represented by real intersections of algebraic curves determined by a discriminant. We represent the discriminant by Chebyshev polynomials and use perturbations of the discriminant to study the spectrum.
We prove that the spectrum of a Schrodinger operator that is periodic in certain directions and super-exponentially decaying in the others is purely absolutely continuous.
In this paper, we consider one dimensional adiabatic quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators in the regime of strong resonant tunneling. We show the emergence of a level repulsion phenomenon which is seen to be very naturally related to the local spectral type of the operator: the more singular the spectrum, the weaker the repulsion.
In this paper, I consider one-dimensional periodic Schr{ö}dinger operators perturbed by a slowly decaying potential. In the adiabatic limit, I give an asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalues in the gaps of the periodic operator. When one slides the perturbation along the periodic potential, these eigenvalues oscillate. I compute the exponentially small amplitude of the oscillations.
We consider Schrödinger operators with smooth periodic potentials in Euclidean spaces of dimension bigger than 1 and prove a uniform lower bound on the density of states for large values of the spectral parameter.
We consider a Schrödinger operator with a Hermitian 2x2 matrix-valued potential which is lattice periodic and can be diagonalized smoothly on the whole $R^n.$ In the case of potential taking its minimum only on the lattice, we prove that the well-known semiclassical asymptotic of first band spectrum for a scalar potential remains valid for our model.
In this paper we obtain asymptotic formulas of arbitrary order for the Bloch eigenvalue and the Bloch function of the periodic Schrodinger operator of arbitrary dimension, when corresponding quasimomentum lies near a diffraction hyperplane. Moreover, we estimate the measure of the isoenergetic surfaces in the high energy region. Bisides, writing the asymptotic formulas for the Bloch eigenvalue and the Bloch function, when corresponding quasimomentum lies far from the diffraction hyperplanes, obtained in my previous papers in improved and enlarged form, we obtain the complete perturbation theor…
We study the inverse spectral problem for periodic Schrödinger opera\-tors of kind $- \frac{1}{2} \hbar^2 Δ_x + V(x)$ on the flat torus $\Bbb T^n := (\Bbb R / 2 π\Bbb Z)^n$ with potentials $V \in C^{\infty} (\Bbb T^n)$. We show that if two operators are isospectral for any $0 < \hbar \le 1$ then they have the same effective Hamiltonian given by the periodic homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This result provides a necessary condition for the isospectrality of these Schrödinger operators. We also provide a link between our result and the spectral limit of quantum integrable systems.
Following the approach of our previous paper we continue to study the asymptotic solution of periodic Schrödinger operators. Using the eigenvalues obtained earlier the corresponding asymptotic wave functions are derived. This gives further evidence in favor of the monodromy relations for the Floquet exponent proposed in the previous paper. In particular, the large energy asymptotic wave functions are related to the instanton partition function of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory with surface operator. A relevant number theoretic dessert is appended.
We study the problem of how the Floquet property manifests for periodic Schrödinger operators which are known to have multiple of asymptotic spectral solutions. The main conclusions are made for elliptic potentials, we demonstrate that for each period of the elliptic function there is a relation about the Floquet exponent and the monodromy of wave function. Among them there are two relations not explained by the classical Floquet theory. These relations produce both old and new asymptotic solutions consistent with results already known.
Consider a quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator $H_{α,θ}$ with analytic potential and irrational frequency $α$. Given any rational approximating $α$, let $S_+$ and $S_-$ denote the union, respectively, the intersection of the spectra taken over $θ$. We show that up to sets of zero Lebesgue measure, the absolutely continuous spectrum can be obtained asymptotically from $S_-$ of the periodic operators associated with the continued fraction expansion of $α$. This proves a conjecture of Y. Last in the analytic case. Similarly, from the asymptotics of $S_+$, one recovers the spectrum of $H_{α,θ}.$
Let ${\cal S}^{lin}:=\{a(t)(-2\II \partial_t-\partial_r^2+V(t,r) | a\in C^{\infty}(\R/2π\Z), V\in C^{\infty}(\R/2π\Z\times\R)\}$ be the space of Schrödinger operators in $(1+1)$-dimensions with periodic time-dependent potential. The action on ${\cal S}^{lin}$ of a large infinite-dimensional reparametrization group $SV$ with Lie algebra $\sv$ \cite{RogUnt06,Unt08}, called the Schrödinger-Virasoro group and containing the Virasoro group, is proved to be Hamiltonian for a certain Poisson structure on ${\cal S}^{lin}$. More precisely, the infinitesimal action of $\sv$ appears to be part of a coadj…
In this paper, we investigate the three-dimensional Schrodinger operator with a periodic, relative to a lattice Ω of R3, potential q. A special class V of the periodic potentials is constructed, which is easily and constructively determined from the spectral invariants. First, we give an algorithm for the unique determination of the potential q in V of the three-dimensional Schrodinger operator from the spectral invariants that were determined constructively from the given Bloch eigenvalues. Then we consider the stability of the algorithm with respect to the spectral invariants and Bloch eigen…
This paper is devoted to the description of our recent results on the spectral behavior of one-dimensional adiabatic quasi-periodic Schrodinger operators. The specific operator we study is a slow periodic perturbation of an incommensurate periodic Schrodinger operator, and we are interested in energies where the perturbation creates a strong interaction between two consecutive bands of the background periodic operator. We describe the location of the spectrum and its nature and discuss the various new resonance phenomena due to the interaction of the spectral bands of the unperturbed periodic …
In this paper, we study spectral properties of the one dimensional periodic Schrodinger operator with an adiabatic quasi-periodic perturbation. We show that in certain energy regions the perturbation leads to resonance effects related to the ones observed in the problem of two resonating quantum wells. These effects affect both the geometry and the nature of the spectrum. In particular, they can lead to the intertwining of sequences of intervals containing absolutely continuous spectrum and intervals containing singular spectrum. Moreover, in regions where all of the spectrum is expected to be…
