In this paper, we study spectral properties of the one dimensional periodic Schrodinger operator with an adiabatic quasi-periodic perturbation. We show that in certain energy regions the perturbation leads to resonance effects related to the ones observed in the problem of two resonating quantum wells. These effects affect both the geometry and the nature of the spectrum. In particular, they can lead to the intertwining of sequences of intervals containing absolutely continuous spectrum and intervals containing singular spectrum. Moreover, in regions where all of the spectrum is expected to be singular, these effects typically give rise to exponentially small "islands" of absolutely continuous spectrum.
In this paper, we consider one dimensional adiabatic quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators in the regime of strong resonant tunneling. We show the emergence of a level repulsion phenomenon which is seen to be very naturally related to the local spectral type of the operator: the more singular the spectrum, the weaker the repulsion.
We construct almost invariant subspaces and the corresponding effective Hamiltonian for magnetic Bloch bands. We also discuss the question of the dynamics related to the effective Hamiltonian. We assume that the magnetic and electric potentials are slowly varying perturbations of the potential of a constant magnetic field and a periodic lattice potential, respectively.
We study a one-dimensional non-stationary Schrödinger equation with a potential slowly depending on time. The corresponding stationary operator depends on time as on a parameter. It has a finite number of negative eigenvalues and absolutely continuous spectrum filling the positive semiaxis. The eigenvalues move with time to the edge of the continuous spectrum and, having reached it, disappear one after another. We study the asymptotic behavior of a solution close at some moment to an eigenfunction of the stationary operator, and, in particular, the phenomena occurring when the corresponding ei…
In this paper we study spectral properties of a family of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on the real line in the adiabatic limit. We assume that the adiabatic iso-energetic curve has a real branch that is extended along the momentum direction. In the energy intervals where this happens, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Lyapunov exponent and show that the spectrum is purely singular. This result was conjectured and proved in a particular case by Fedotov and Klopp in \cite{FEKL1}.

A periodic Schrödinger operator on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \mathbb R)=0$ endowed with a properly discontinuous cocompact isometric action of a discrete group is considered. Under some additional conditions on the magnetic field existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of such an operator in the semiclassical limit is established. The proofs are based on the study of the tunneling effect in the corresponding quantum system.
We derive an analog of the Landau-Zener adiabatic tunneling formula for an open, two-level system coupled to a memoryless, dephasing bath. The derivation rests on a geometric view of the spectral subspaces as adiabatic invariants.
We consider tunneling between 2 symmetric potential wells for a 2-d Schrodinger operator, in the case of eigenvalues associated with quasi-modes supported on KAM or Birkhoff tori.
We consider Schrödinger operators $H=-Δ_{g_\varepsilon} + V$ on a fibre bundle $M\stackrelπ{\to}B$ with compact fibres and a metric $g_\varepsilon$ that blows up directions perpendicular to the fibres by a factor ${\varepsilon^{-1}\gg 1}$. We show that for an eigenvalue $λ$ of the fibre-wise part of $H$, satisfying a local gap condition, and every $N\in \mathbb{N}$ there exists a subspace of $L^2(M)$ that is invariant under $H$ up to errors of order $\varepsilon^{N+1}$. The dynamical and spectral features of $H$ on this subspace can be described by an effective operator on the fibre-wise $λ$-e…
The parametrization of adiabatic paths is optimal when tunneling is minimized. Hamiltonian evolutions do not have unique optimizers. However, dephasing Lindblad evolutions do. The optimizers are simply characterized by an Euler-Lagrange equation and have a constant tunneling rate along the path irrespective of the gap. Application to quantum search algorithms recovers the Grover result for appropriate scaling of the dephasing. Dephasing rates that beat Grover imply hidden resources in Lindblad operators.
In the semiclassical limit h to 0, we analyze a class of self-adjoint Schrödinger operators H_h = h^2 L + h W + V id_E acting on sections of a vector bundle E over an oriented Riemannian manifold M where L is a Laplace type operator, W is an endomorphism field and the potential energy V has non-degenerate minima at a finite number of points m_1, ... m_r in M, called potential wells. Using quasimodes of WKB-type near m_j for eigenfunctions associated with the low lying eigenvalues of H_h, we analyze the tunneling effect, i.e. the splitting between low lying eigenvalues, which e.g. arises in cer…
In this paper, I consider one-dimensional periodic Schr{ö}dinger operators perturbed by a slowly decaying potential. In the adiabatic limit, I give an asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalues in the gaps of the periodic operator. When one slides the perturbation along the periodic potential, these eigenvalues oscillate. I compute the exponentially small amplitude of the oscillations.
We consider resonant tunneling between disorder localized states in a potential energy displaying perfect correlations over large distances. The phenomenon described here may be of relevance to models exhibiting many-body localization. Furthermore, in the context of single particle operators, our examples demonstrate that exponential resolvent localization does not imply exponential dynamical localization for random Schrödinger operators with correlated potentials.
We present a proof of Minami type estimates for one dimensional random Schrödinger operators valid at all energies in the localization regime provided a Wegner estimate is known to hold. The Minami type estimates are then applied to various models to obtain results on their spectral statistics. The heuristics underlying our proof of Minami type estimates is that close by eigenvalues of a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator correspond either to eigenfunctions that live far away from each other in space or they come from some tunneling phenomena. In the second case, one can undo the tunneling a…
