We construct almost invariant subspaces and the corresponding effective Hamiltonian for magnetic Bloch bands. We also discuss the question of the dynamics related to the effective Hamiltonian. We assume that the magnetic and electric potentials are slowly varying perturbations of the potential of a constant magnetic field and a periodic lattice potential, respectively.
In this paper, we consider one dimensional adiabatic quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators in the regime of strong resonant tunneling. We show the emergence of a level repulsion phenomenon which is seen to be very naturally related to the local spectral type of the operator: the more singular the spectrum, the weaker the repulsion.
In this paper, we study spectral properties of the one dimensional periodic Schrodinger operator with an adiabatic quasi-periodic perturbation. We show that in certain energy regions the perturbation leads to resonance effects related to the ones observed in the problem of two resonating quantum wells. These effects affect both the geometry and the nature of the spectrum. In particular, they can lead to the intertwining of sequences of intervals containing absolutely continuous spectrum and intervals containing singular spectrum. Moreover, in regions where all of the spectrum is expected to be…
We study a one-dimensional non-stationary Schrödinger equation with a potential slowly depending on time. The corresponding stationary operator depends on time as on a parameter. It has a finite number of negative eigenvalues and absolutely continuous spectrum filling the positive semiaxis. The eigenvalues move with time to the edge of the continuous spectrum and, having reached it, disappear one after another. We study the asymptotic behavior of a solution close at some moment to an eigenfunction of the stationary operator, and, in particular, the phenomena occurring when the corresponding ei…
In this paper we study spectral properties of a family of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on the real line in the adiabatic limit. We assume that the adiabatic iso-energetic curve has a real branch that is extended along the momentum direction. In the energy intervals where this happens, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Lyapunov exponent and show that the spectrum is purely singular. This result was conjectured and proved in a particular case by Fedotov and Klopp in \cite{FEKL1}.

We study the dynamics of a quantum particle moving in a plane under the influence of a constant magnetic field and driven by a slowly time-dependent singular flux tube through a puncture. The known adiabatic results do not cover these models as the Hamiltonian has time dependent domain. We give a meaning to the propagator and prove an adiabatic theorem. To this end we introduce and develop the new notion of a propagator weakly associated to a time-dependent Hamiltonian.
We consider Schrödinger operators $H=-Δ_{g_\varepsilon} + V$ on a fibre bundle $M\stackrelπ{\to}B$ with compact fibres and a metric $g_\varepsilon$ that blows up directions perpendicular to the fibres by a factor ${\varepsilon^{-1}\gg 1}$. We show that for an eigenvalue $λ$ of the fibre-wise part of $H$, satisfying a local gap condition, and every $N\in \mathbb{N}$ there exists a subspace of $L^2(M)$ that is invariant under $H$ up to errors of order $\varepsilon^{N+1}$. The dynamical and spectral features of $H$ on this subspace can be described by an effective operator on the fibre-wise $λ$-e…
Let ${\cal S}^{lin}:=\{a(t)(-2\II \partial_t-\partial_r^2+V(t,r) | a\in C^{\infty}(\R/2π\Z), V\in C^{\infty}(\R/2π\Z\times\R)\}$ be the space of Schrödinger operators in $(1+1)$-dimensions with periodic time-dependent potential. The action on ${\cal S}^{lin}$ of a large infinite-dimensional reparametrization group $SV$ with Lie algebra $\sv$ \cite{RogUnt06,Unt08}, called the Schrödinger-Virasoro group and containing the Virasoro group, is proved to be Hamiltonian for a certain Poisson structure on ${\cal S}^{lin}$. More precisely, the infinitesimal action of $\sv$ appears to be part of a coadj…
We show that the adiabatic approximation for nonselfadjoint hamiltonians seems to induce two non-equal expressions for the geometric phase. The first one is related to the spectral projector involved in the adiabatic theorem, the other one is the adiabatic limit of the nonadiabatic geometric phase. This apparent inconsistency is resolved by observing that the difference between the two expressions is compensated by a small deviation in the dynamical phases.

We give an example of a simple mechanical system described by the generalized harmonic oscillator equation, which is a basic model in discussion of the adiabatic dynamics and geometric phase. This system is a linearized plane pendulum with the slowly varying mass and length of string and the suspension point moving at a slowly varying speed, the simplest system with broken $T$-invariance. The paradoxical character of the presented results is that the same Hamiltonian system, the generalized harmonic oscillator in our case, is canonically equivalent to two different systems: the usual plane mat…
We study the time evolution of a density matrix in a quantum mechanical system described by an ergodic magnetic Schrödinger operator with singular magnetic and electric potentials, the electric field being introduced adiabatically. We construct a unitary propagator that solves weakly the corresponding time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and solve a Liouville equation in an appropriate Hilbert space.
Quantum control could be implemented by varying the system Hamiltonian. According to adiabatic theorem, a slowly changing Hamiltonian can approximately keep the system at the ground state during the evolution if the initial state is a ground state. In this paper we consider this process as an interpolation between the initial and final Hamiltonians. We use the mean value of a single operator to measure the distance between the final state and the ideal ground state. This measure could be taken as the error of adiabatic approximation. We prove under certain conditions, this error can be precise…
The adiabatic charge transport is investigated in a two dimensional Landau model perturbed by a bounded potential at zero temperature. We show that if the Fermi level lies in a spectral gap then in the adiabatic limit the accumulated excess Hall transport is given by the linear response Kubo-Streda formula. The proof relies on the expansion of Nenciu, some generalized phase space estimates, and a bound on the speed of propagation.
We study a nonlinear system of partial differential equations in which a complex field (the Higgs field) evolves according to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation, coupled to an electromagnetic field whose time evolution is determined by a Chern-Simons term in the action. In two space dimensions, the Chern-Simons dynamics is a Galileo invariant evolution for A, which is an interesting alternative to the Lorentz invariant Maxwell evolution, and is finding increasing numbers of applications in two dimensional condensed matter field theory. The system we study, introduced by Manton, is a special cas…
This paper is devoted to the analysis of an abstract formula describing quantum adiabatic charge pumping in a general context. We consider closed systems characterized by a slowly varying time-dependent Hamiltonian depending on an external parameter $α$. The current operator, defined as the derivative of the Hamiltonian with respect to $α$, once integrated over some time interval, gives rise to a charge pumped through the system over that time span. We determine the first two leading terms in the adiabatic parameter of this pumped charge under the usual gap hypothesis. In particular, in case t…
We show how to perform universal adiabatic quantum computation using a Hamiltonian which describes a set of particles with local interactions on a two-dimensional grid. A single parameter in the Hamiltonian is adiabatically changed as a function of time to simulate the quantum circuit. We bound the eigenvalue gap above the unique groundstate by mapping our model onto the ferromagnetic XXZ chain with kink boundary conditions; the gap of this spin chain was computed exactly by Koma and Nachtergaele using its $q$-deformed version of SU(2) symmetry. We also discuss a related time-independent Hamil…
Conditions for the validity of the quantum adiabatic approximation are analyzed. For the case of linear Hamiltonians, a simple and general sufficient condition is derived, which is valid for arbitrary spectra and any kind of time variation. It is shown that in some cases the found condition is necessary and sufficient. The adiabatic theorem is generalized for the case of nonlinear Hamiltonians.
While it is well-known that every nearly-periodic Hamiltonian system possesses an adiabatic invariant, extant methods for computing terms in the adiabatic invariant series are inefficient. The most popular method involves the heavy intermediate calculation of a non-unique near-identity coordinate transformation, even though the adiabatic invariant itself is a uniquely-defined scalar. A less well-known method, developed by S. Omohundro, avoids calculating intermediate sequences of coordinate transformations but is also inefficient as it involves its own sequence of complex intermediate calculat…
We study in detail the relationship between the Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian of quantum optics and a family of quasi-exactly solvable Schrödinger equations. The connection between them is stablished through the biconfluent Heun equation. We found that each invariant $n$-dimensional subspace of Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian corresponds either to $n$ potentials, each with one known solution, or to one potential with $n$-known solutions. Among these Schrödinger potentials appear the quarkonium and the sextic oscillator.
In this paper, we discuss time evolution and adiabatic approximation in $PT$-symmetric quantum mechanics. we give the time evolving equation for a class of $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians and some conditions of the adiabatic approximation for the class of $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians.
An adiabatic quantum algorithm is essentially given by three elements: An initial Hamiltonian with known ground state, a problem Hamiltonian whose ground state corresponds to the solution of the given problem and an evolution schedule such that the adiabatic condition is satisfied. A correct choice of these elements is crucial for an efficient adiabatic quantum computation. In this paper we propose a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm to solve optimization problems with an adiabatic machine assuming restrictions on the class of available problem Hamiltonians. The scheme is based on repeated ca…
We derive a nearly optimal upper bound on the running time in the adiabatic theorem for a switching family of Hamiltonians. We assume the switching Hamiltonian is in the Gevrey class $G^α$ as a function of time, and we show that the error in adiabatic approximation remains small for running times of order $g^{-2}\,|\ln\,g\,|^{6α}$. Here $g$ denotes the minimal spectral gap between the eigenvalue(s) of interest and the rest of the spectrum of the instantaneous Hamiltonian.
In this work, we have extended the factorization method of scalar shape-invariant Schrö\-din\-ger Hamiltonians to a class of Dirac-like matrix Hamiltonians. The intertwining operators of the Schrödinger equations have been implemented in the Dirac-like shape invariant equations. We have considered also another kind of anti-intertwining operators changing the sign of energy. The Dirac-like Hamiltonians can be obtained from reduction of higher dimensional spin systems. Two examples have been worked out, one obtained from the sphere ${\cal S}^2$ and a second one, having a non-Hermitian character,…
The non-local quantum field theories attract interest in the mathematical and physical community as candidates for effective description of the reality taking into account the quantum gravity effects. The standard methods, developed for the conventional local quantum field theories, often are not applicable. In this paper the Hamiltonian approach, originally proposed for quantization of the non-local effective theory inspired by non-commutative geometry of the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts Quantum Spacetime, is generalized to a large class of ultraviolet finite non-local Hamiltonian perturbati…
We study two seminal approaches, developed by B. Simon and J. Kisyński, to the well-posedness of the Schrödinger equation with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. In both cases the Hamiltonian is assumed to be semibounded from below and to have constant form domain but a possibly non-constant operator domain. The problem is addressed in the abstract setting, without assuming any specific functional expression for the Hamiltonian. The connection between the two approaches is the relation between sesquilinear forms and the bounded linear operators representing them. We provide a characterization of co…
In this paper we study up to which extent we can apply adiabatic control strategies to a quantum control model obtained by rotating wave approximation. In particular, we show that, under suitable assumptions on the asymptotic regime between the parameters characterizing the rotating wave and the adiabatic approximations, the induced flow converges to the one obtained by considering the two approximations separately and by combining them formally in cascade. As a consequence, we propose explicit control laws which can be used to induce desired populations transfers, robustly with respect to par…
We present a coordinate-free approach for constructing approximate first integrals of generalized slow-fast Hamiltonian systems, based on the global averaging method on parameter-dependent phase spaces with $\mathbb{S}^1 -$symmetry. Explicit global formulas for approximate second-order first integrals are derived. As examples, we analyze the case quadratic in the fast variables (in particular, the elastic pendulum), and the charged particle in a slowly-varying magnetic field.

We consider a time-dependent small quantum system weakly coupled to an environnement, whose effective dynamics we address by means of a Lindblad equation. We assume the Hamiltonian part of the Lindbladian is slowly varying in time and the dissipator part has small amplitude. We study the properties of the evolved state of the small system as the adiabatic parameter and coupling constant both go to zero, in various asymptotic regimes. In particular, we analyse the deviations of the transition probabilities of the small system between the instantaneous eigenspaces of the Hamiltonian with respect…
We address the problem of obtaining the exact reduced dynamics of the spin-half (qubit) immersed within the bosonic bath (enviroment). An exact solution of the Schrodinger equation with the paradigmatic spin-boson Hamiltonian is obtained. We believe that this result is a major step ahead and may ultimately contribute to the complete resolution of the problem in question. We also construct the constant of motion for the spin-boson system. In contrast to the standard techniques available within the framework of the open quantum systems theory, our analysis is based on the theory of block operato…
We consider the quantum graph Hamiltonian on the square lattice in Euclidean space, and we show that the spectrum of the Hamiltonian converges to the corresponding Schrödinger operator on the Euclidean space in the continuum limit, and that the corresponding eigenfunctions and eigenprojections also converge in some sense. We employ the discrete Schrödinger operator as the intermediate operator, and we use a recent result by the second and third author on the continuum limit of the discrete Schrödinger operator.
Recently a method for adiabatic quantum computation has been proposed and there has been considerable speculation about its efficiency for NP-complete problems. Heuristic arguments in its favor are based on the unproven assumption of an eigenvalue gap. We show that, even without the assumption of an eigenvalue gap, other standard arguments can be used to show that a large class of Hamiltonians proposed for adiabatic quantum computation have unique ground states. We also discuss some of the issues which arise in trying to analyze the behavior of the eigenvalue gap. In particular, we propose sev…
This paper is devoted to a generalisation of the quantum adiabatic theorem to a nonlinear setting. We consider a Hamiltonian operator which depends on the time variable and on a finite number of parameters and acts on a separable Hilbert space of which we select a fixed basis. We study an evolution equation in which this Hamiltonian acts on the unknown vector, while depending on coordinates of the unknown vector in the selected basis, thus making the equation nonlinear. We prove existence of solutions to this equation and consider their asymptotics in the adiabatic regime, i.e. when the Hamilt…
The recent "honeycomb code" is a fault-tolerant quantum memory defined by a sequence of checks which implements a nontrivial automorphism of the toric code. We argue that a general framework to understand this code is to consider continuous adiabatic paths of gapped Hamiltonians and we give a conjectured description of the fundamental group and second and third homotopy groups of this space in two spatial dimensions. A single cycle of such a path can implement some automorphism of the topological order of that Hamiltonian. We construct such paths for arbitrary automorphisms of two-dimensional …
