Two extreme members of the cobaltite series, LaCoO3 and DyCoO3, were investigated by the electrical resistivity and thermopower measurements up to 800-1000 K. Special attention was given to effects of extra holes or electrons, introduced by light doping of Co sites by Mg2+ or Ti4+ ions. The experiments on the La based compounds were complemented with magnetic measurements. The study shows that both kinds of charge carriers induce magnetic states on surrounding CoIII sites and form thus thermally stable polarons of large total spin. Their itinerancy is characterized by low temperature resistivity, which is of Arrhenius type r~exp(EA/kT) for the hole (CoIV) doped samples, while an unusual dependence r~1/Tn (n=8-10) is observed for the electron (CoII) doped samples. At higher temperatures, additional hole carriers are massively populated in the CoIII background, leading to a resistivity drop. This transition become evident at ~300 K and 450 K and culminates at TI-M=540 and 780 K for the La and Dy based samples, respectively.
The electronic behaviours of the cobaltites are explained considering two excitation processes in parent compounds. The first one is related to a local excitation from the diamagnetic LS CoIII to close-lying paramagnetic HS CoIII state. Secondarily, a metallic phase of the IS CoIII character is formed through a charge transfer mechanism between LS/HS pairs. The magnetic polarons associated with doped carriers are interpreted as droplets of such IS phase.
Due to the photo-instability and hysteresis of TiO$_2$ electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), novel electron transport materials are highly demanded. Here, we show ideal band alignment between La-doped BaSnO$_3$ (LBSO) and methyl ammonium (MA) lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI$_3$). The CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$/La$_x$Ba$_{(1-x)}$SnO$_3$ interface forms a stable all-perovskite heterostructure. The selective band alignment is manipulated with band gap renormalization by La-doping on the Ba site. LBSO shows high mobility, photo-stability, and structural stability, promising the n…
Nanocrystals based on metal-halide perovskites offer a promising material platform for highly efficient lighting. Using transient optical spectroscopy, we study excitation recombination dynamics in manganese-doped CsPb(Cl,Br)3 perovskite nanocrystals. We find an increase in the intrinsic excitonic radiative recombination rate upon doping, which is typically a challenging material property to tailor. Supported by ab initio calculations, we can attribute the enhanced emission rates to increased exciton localization through lattice periodicity breaking from Mn dopants, which increases exciton eff…
Fundamental and harmonic magneto-dielectricity studied for varied perovskite systems-- Pb0.98Gd0.02(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.995O3 (A-site co-doped PGMN magneto-relaxor), La0.95Ca0.05CoO3 (A-site doped spin-state LCCO), and La2NiMnO6 (double-perovskite LNMO multiglass) characterize intricately polarized phases. First-harmonic signal (ε2') of magnetically co-doped PGMN manifests finite polarization P(H) below 270K, corroborated by the measured remnant P-E traces. Second-harmonic (ε3') reveals the effect of random E-fields causing electrical vitreousity, latter indicated by the divergent timescale of the fu…
Perovskite photovoltaics (PVs) have attracted attention because of their excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE). Critical issues related to large area PV performance, reliability and lifetime need to be addressed. Here, we show that doped metal oxides can provide ideal electron selectivity, improved reliability and stability for perovskite PVs. We report p-i-n perovskite PVs with device areas ranging from 0.09cm2 to 0.5cm2 incorporating a thick aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) electron selective contact with hysteresis-free PCE of over 13% and high fill factor values in the range of 80%. We report two solid solutions based on magnetic ion doping of the double perovskite oxide Sr2GaSbO6: Sr2Ga1-xCrxSbO6 (0.1 < x < 0.4) and Sr2Ga1-xFexSbO6 (0.1 < x < 0.4). All compositions crystallize in the same space group (I4/m) as their undoped parent phase Sr2GaSbO6, with the trivalent magnetic cations Cr3+ or Fe3+ partially substituting for non-magnetic Ga3+ in one of the B-cation sites. The Cr- and Fe-doped phases display dominant antiferromagnetic coupling among the dopant magnetic moments, and exhibit decreasing band gaps with increasing substitution level.
In this paper we report studies on the correlation between the presence and distribution of cation vacancies in doped manganites (La,M)MnO3+delta (where M = Na, Ca) and their magnetic properties. Results indicate that cation vacancies are distributed differently for the different crystal structures and dopant ion type. In particular it is shown that knowledge of the total vacancies concentration alone is not enough to fully characterize the physical properties of manganites and that their distribution between the A and B sites of the perovskite structure plays a crucial role which should be ta…
Perovskite oxide based thin film gas sensors have long been considered as potential alternatives to commonly investigated binary metal oxides based sensors. BiFeO3, which is a prototype of p-type perovskite based semiconducting oxides, has recently drawn significant attention for its promising gas sensing characteristics. In the present work, the hydrogen sensing characteristics of calcium doped BiFeO3 has been reported by varying the film thickness, doping concentration, operating temperature, and test gas concentration. The films were deposited on glass substrates by sol-gel route using spin…
Materials combining the optoelectronic functionalities of semiconductors with control of the spin degree of freedom are highly sought after for the advancement of quantum technology devices. Here, we report the paramagnetic Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid perovskite Mn:(PEA)2PbI4 (PEA = phenethylammonium) in which the interaction of isolated Mn2+ ions with magnetically brightened excitons leads to circularly polarized photoluminescence. Using a combination of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and magneto-optical experiments, we find that the Brillouin-shaped polarizatio…
While doping is widely used for tuning physical properties of perovskites in experiments, it remains a challenge to exactly know how doping achieves the desired effects. Here, we propose an empirical and computationally tractable model to understand the effects of doping with Fe-doped BaTiO$_{3}$ as an example. This model assumes that the lattice sites occupied by Fe ion and its nearest six neighbors lose their ability to polarize, giving rise to a small cluster of defective dipoles. Employing this model in Monte-Carlo simulations, many important features like reduced polarization and the conv…
Perovskite structured transition metal oxides are important technological materials for catalysis and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Their functionality often depends on oxygen diffusivity and mobility through complex oxide heterostructures, which can be significantly impacted by structural and chemical modifications, such as doping. Further, when utilized within electrochemical cells, interfacial reactions with other components (e.g. Ni- and Cr-based alloy electrodes and interconnects) can influence the perovskite's reactivity and ion transport, leading to complex dependencies that are d…
Macroscopically, confined electron gases at polar oxide interfaces are rationalized within the simple "polar catastrophe" model. At the microscopic level, however, many other effects such as electric fields, structural distortions and quantum-mechanical interactions enter into play. Here we show how to bridge the gap between these two length scales, by combining the accuracy of first-principles methods with the conceptual simplicity of model Hamiltonian approaches. To demonstrate our strategy, we address the equilibrium distribution of the compensating free carriers at polar LaAlO3/SrTiO3 inte…
Inorganic-organic lead halide perovskites, particularly methylammonium lead halide (MAPbI$_3$) perovskite, is perceived to be a promising material for optoelectronics and spintronics. However, lead toxicity and instability under air and moisture restrict its practical uses. Hence, it is essential to reduce lead extent by substituting appropriate alternatives. Here, we substitute Sn and Ge in cubic MAPbI$_3$ and compare various properties of hybrid perovskites by employing state-of-the-art first-principles-based methodologies, viz., density functional theory (DFT) with semilocal and hybrid func…
We have investigated the peculiar structure of charge and spin ordering in the half-doped layered perovskite oxide La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_4$ by elastic neutron scattering. Two samples with different preparation histories were studied. We find that the generic features of the ordered states, such as their short-range, glassy nature and the spin incommensurability, are sample-independent. At the same time, some subtle features of the ordered phases, such as the correlation lengths, differ.
Doping is a widely used method to tune physical properties of ferroelectric perovskites. Since doping can induce charges due to the substitution of certain elements, charge effects shall be considered in doped samples. To understand how charges can affect the system, we incorporate the dipole-charge interaction into our simulations, where the pinched hysteresis loops can well be reproduced. Two charge compensation models are proposed and numerically investigated to understand how lanthanum doping affect BaTiO$_{3}$'s ferroelectric phase transition temperature and hysteresis loop. The consequen…
This study is carried out using first principles density functional theory calculations within gpaw code. Atomic size effect is analyzed and investigated by doping either Li, Cs or both on Barium doped BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) which belongs to monoclinic $P2_1/m$ space group. The calculated results reveal that Cs doped BFO had significantly improved photocurrent density seemingly due to broadened absorption peaks and biplasmons generation. Co-doping two atoms with large size difference have a significant effect on plasmon width and peak than doping with a single and small sized atom. At higher photon e…
La1-xSrxCo0.25Fe0.75O3-delta is known as one of the best cathode materials for permeation membranes and solid oxide fuel cells. Optimization of its chemical composition is a challenging problem. One of the key properties is concentration of oxygen vacancies, controlled by their formation energies. Ab initio calculations were employed in order to study the formation of oxygen vacancies in La1-xSrxCo0.25Fe0.75O3-delta perovskites by varying the Sr content from x = 12.5% to 50%. The formation energies were obtained for different stoichiometries as functions of temperature and oxygen partial press…
We demonstrate memory devices based on proton doping and re-distribution in perovskite nickelates (RNiO3, {R=Sm,Nd}) that undergo filling-controlled Mott transition. Switching speeds as high as 30 ns in two-terminal devices patterned by electron-beam lithography is observed. The state switching speed reported here are 300X greater than what has been noted with proton-driven resistance switching to date. The ionic-electronic correlated oxide memory devices also exhibit multi-state non-volatile switching. The results are of relevance to use of quantum materials in emerging memory and neuromorphi…
Recently, direct bandgap double perovskites are becoming more popular among photovoltaic research community owing to their potential to address issues of lead (Pb) toxicity and structural instability inherent in lead halide (simple) perovskites. In this study, In-Ag based direct bandgap double perovskite, Cs2AgInCl6 (CAIC), is treated with transition metal doping to improve the optoelectronic properties of the material. Investigations of structural and optoelectronic properties of Cu-doped CAIC, Cs2Ag(1-x)CuxInCl6, are done using ab-initio calculations with density functional theory (DFT) and …
Electromagnetic properties of doped perovskites depend sensitively on the doping level. Both the superconducting transition temperature of Bi2Sr2Ca(Pr)Cu2O8+d compounds and the magnetic and electronic transport properties of La(Sr)Co(Fe)O3 perovskites change dramatically with the doping level. Apart from doping, oxygen deficiency is influenced by the details of preparation processes such as calcination and sintering. Simultaneous determination of constituents is of crucial importance from sample characterization point of view. Quantitative analysis of perovskite oxides can be performed by Seco…
The samples LaCoO3 with dilute substitutions on cobalt sites have been studied using the resistivity, thermopower and magnetic susceptibility measurements over the temperature range up to ~900 K. The Co-site substitution does not affect the magnetic transition at ~100 K and the onset of massive population of hole carriers at ~500 K, characteristic for undoped LaCoO3. On the other hand, the low-temperature transport and magnetism is markedly distinct for samples with extra charge on cobalt ions introduced by the heterovalent dopants (Mg2+, Ti4+) compared to samples with minor non-stoichiometry …

Single crystals of electron-doped SrMnO3 with a cubic perovskite structure have been systematically investigated as the most canonical (orbital-degenerate) double-exchange system, whose ground states have been still theoretically controversial. With only 1-2% electron doping by Ce substitution for Sr, a G-type antiferromagnetic metal with a tiny spin canting in a cubic lattice shows up as the ground state, where the Jahn-Teller polarons with heavy mass are likely to form. Further electron doping above 4%, however, replaces this isotropic metal with an insulator with tetragonal lattice distorti…

In this work, layered perovskite SBN was investigated in a new doped form for hole as well as electron transport layer (HTL/ETL) in perovskite solar cells. This work was targeted to conclude the effect of tin doping in lanthanum-bismuth layer SBN on optical energy band gap besides dominant electron-hole transportation to assist in perovskite solar cell applications. Thoroughly hard ball-milled compositions Sr1-xSnxBi1.95La0.05Nb2O9 (x=0.0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2) were prepared by special microwave synthesis to obtain fine (~10-60nm) mesoporous particle network of atomic level substituti…
We have investigated cobaltite relatives of the layered perovskite cuprates and nickelates, Pr$_{2-x}$Ca$_x$CoO$_4$ ($0.39 \leq x \leq 0.73$) and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_4$ ($x = 0.61$), using elastic neutron scattering. We have discovered doping-dependent incommensurate short-range ordering of charges and magnetic moments, which in cobaltites occur in the range of heavy doping, $ 0.5 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.75$. The charge order exists already at room temperature and shows no change on cooling. The incommensurability of its propagation vector, ${\bf Q}_c = (ε_c,0,l)$, roughly scales with the conce…
A unified theory is developed to explain various types of electronic collective behaviors in doped manganites R$_{1-x}$X$_x$MnO$_3$ (R = La, Pr,Nd etc. and X = Ca, Sr, Ba etc.). Starting from a realistic electronic model, we derive an effective Hamiltonianis by ultilizing the projection perturbation techniques and develop a spin-charge-orbital coherent state theory, in which the Jahn-Teller effect and the orbital degeneracy of e$_g$ electrons in Mn ions are taken into account. Physically, the experimentally observed charge ordering state and electronic phase separation are two macroscopic quan…
We investigate the electronic, ferroelectric and magnetic properties of KTaO3/PbTiO3 interfaces by using conventional density functional theory (DFT) and advanced DFT such as hybrid functional HSE06. We show that doped holes in valence bands or electrons in conduction bands give rise to ferromagnetism at the interfaces. The ferromagnetic states are ground states for both hole-doped (p-type) and electron-doped (n-type) interfaces by comparison with their corresponding nonmagnetic and antiferromagnetic states. Carriers (holes or electrons) concentrate near the interface to screen the polarizatio…
Halide perovskites exhibit slow rates of non-radiative electron-hole recombination upon illumination. Chu et al. [Sci. Adv. 6 7, eaaw7453 (2020)] use the results of first-principles simulations to argue that this arises from the nature of the crystal vibrations and leads to a breakdown of Shockley-Read-Hall theory. We highlight flaws in their methodology and analysis of carrier capture by point defects in crystalline semiconductors.
We explore mechanisms of orbital order decay in doped Mott insulators $R_{1-x}$(Sr,Ca)$_x$VO$_3$ ($R=\,$Pr,Y,La) caused by charged (Sr,Ca) defects. Our unrestricted Hartree-Fock analysis focuses on the combined effect of random, charged impurities and associated doped holes up to $x=0.5$. The study is based on a generalized multi-band Hubbard model for the relevant vanadium $t_{2g}$ electrons, and includes the long-range (i) Coulomb potentials of defects and (ii) electron-electron interactions. We show that the rotation of occupied $t_{2g}$ orbitals, induced by the electric field of defects, i…
We report calculations of the electronic structure and optical properties of doped $n$-type perovskite BaSnO3 and layered perovskites. While doped BaSnO$_3$ retains its transparency for energies below the valence to conduction band onset, the doped layered compounds exhibit below band edge optical conductivity due to transitions from the lowest conduction band. This gives absorption in the visible for Ba2SnO4. Thus it is important to minimize this phase in transparent conducting oxide (TCO) films. Ba3Sn2O7 and Ba4Sn3O10 have strong transitions only in the red and infrared, respectively. Thus t…
We report a study of polycrystalline samples of the family La1-xCdxMnO3+dwith different percentage of Mn4+ ions. X-rays diffraction, Iodometric titration, Raman, Magnetic and Electrical Resistivity measurements provide a general characterisation of the physical properties. Results are qualitatively similar to the ones found in Ca doped manganese perovskites. Key words: Cd, manganese perovskites, magnetoresistance, Raman, magnetic, resistivity
We have prepared polycrystalline samples of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$ErRuO$_6$ and (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$YRuO$_6$, and have measured the resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, susceptibility and x-ray absorption in order to evaluate the electronic states and thermoelectric properties of the doped double-perovskite ruthenates. We have observed a large Seebeck coefficient of -160 $μ$V/K and a low thermal conductivity of 7 mW/cmK for $x$=0.1 at 800 K in air. These two values are suitable for efficient oxide thermoelectrics, although the resistivity is still as high as 1 $Ω$cm. From …

Efficient charge separation at the interfaces between the perovskite and with the carrier transport layers is crucial for perovskite solar cells to achieve high power conversion efficiency. We systematically investigate the hole injection dynamics from MAPbI$_3$ perovskite to three typical hole transport materials (HTMs) PEDOT:PSS, PTAA and NiO$_x$ by means of pump-probe transmission measurements. We photoexcite only near the MAPbI$_3$/HTM interface or near the back surface, and measure the differential transient transmission between the two excitation configurations to extract the carrier dyn…

Magnetic refrigeration at room-temperature is a technology that could potentially be more environmentally-friendly, efficient and affordable than traditional refrigeration. The search for suitable materials for magnetocaloric refrigeration led to the study of double-perovskites La$_2$MnNiO$_6$, La$_2$MnCoO$_6$ and La$_2$MnFeO$_6$. While La$_2$MnNiO$_6$ and La$_2$MnCoO$_6$ are ferromagnets with near room-temperature $T_C$s, previous theoretical study of double-perovskite La$_2$MnFeO$_6$ revealed that this material is a ferrimagnet due to strong electronic interactions in Fe-$d$ orbitals. Here, …
Metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals have demonstrated excellent optoelectronic properties for light-emitting applications. Isovalent doping with various metals (M2+) can be used to tailor and enhance their light emission. Although crucial to maximize performance, an understanding of the universal working mechanism for such doping is still missing. Here, we directly compare the optical properties of nanocrystals containing the most commonly employed dopants, fabricated under identical synthesis conditions. We show for the first time unambiguously and supported by first principles calculations …
The mechanisms that drive metal-to-insulator transitions (MIT) in correlated solids are not fully understood. For example, the perovskite (PV) SrCoO3 is a FM metal while the oxygen-deficient (n-doped) brownmillerite (BM) SrCoO2.5 is an anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) insulator. Given the magnetic and structural transitions that accompany the MIT, the driver for such a MIT transition is unclear. We also observe that the perovskite metals LaNiO3, SrFeO3, and SrCoO3 also undergo MIT when n-doped via high-to-low valence compositional changes. Also, pressurizing the insulating BM SrCoO2.5 phase, drives a …
We use a 30-nm x-ray beam to study the spatially resolved properties of a SmNiO$_3$-based nanodevice that is doped with protons. The x-ray absorption spectra supported by density-functional theory (DFT) simulations show partial reduction of nickel valence in the region with high proton concentration, which leads to the insulating behavior. Concurrently, x-ray diffraction reveals only a small lattice distortion in the doped regions. Together, our results directly show that the knob which proton doping modifies is the electronic valency, and not the crystal lattice. The studies are relevant to o…
Recently we proposed that defect tolerance in the hybrid perovskites is due to their characteristic low-frequency lattice phonon modes that decrease the non-adiabatic coupling and weaken the overlap between the free carrier and defect states [Sci. Adv. 6 7, eaaw7453 (2020)]. Kim and Walsh disagree with the interpretation and argue that there are flaws in our employed methodology. Herein we address their concerns and show that their conclusions are not valid due to misunderstandings of nonadiabatic transition.
We report density functional theory (DFT) investigation of $B$-site doped CaFeO$_3$, a prototypical charge-ordered perovskite. At 290 K, CaFeO$_3$ undergoes a metal-insulator transition and a charge disproportionation reaction 2Fe$^{4+}$$\rightarrow$Fe$^{5+}$+Fe$^{3+}$. We observe that when Zr dopants occupy a (001) layer, the band gap of the resulting solid solution increases to 0.93 eV due to a 2D Jahn-Teller type distortion, where FeO$_6$ cages on the $xy$ plane elongate along $x$ and $y$ alternatively between neighboring Fe sites. Furthermore, we show that the rock-salt ordering of the Fe$…
The effective mass is one of the main factors determining the Seebeck coefficient and electronic conductivity. Nb-doping increases the effective mass because of two reasons, lattice constants increase and electronic effects. In this ab-initio study the effective mass is estimated from the curvature of electronic bands and it could be clarified that the deformation of SrTiO3 crystals has a significant influence on bandgap and effective DOS and band mass, which are both in excellent agreement to experimental data. However, the electronic effect due to the e2g- band flattening near the Gamma-poin…
Low temperature solution combustion synthesis emerges as a facile method for synthesis of functional metal oxides thin films for electronic applications. We study the solution combustion synthesis process of Cu:NiOx using different molar ratios (w/o, 0.1 and 1.5) of fuel acetylacetone (Acac) to oxidizer (Cu, Ni Nitrates) as a function of thermal annealing tempera-tures 150, 200 and 300 oC. The solution combustion synthesis process, in both thin films and bulk Cu:NiOx, is investigated. Thermal analysis studies using TGA and DTA reveal that the Cu:NiOx thin films show a more gradual mass loss wh…
Band gap engineering in SrTiO${}_{3}$ and related titanate perovskites has long been explored due to the intriguing properties of the materials for photocatalysis and photovoltaic applications. A popular approach in the materials chemistry community is to substitutionally dope aliovalent transition metal ions onto the B site in the lattice to alter the valence band. However, in such a scheme there is limited control over the dopant valence, and compensating defects often form. Here we demonstrate a novel technique to controllably synthesize Fe$^{2+}$- and Fe$^{3+}$-doped SrTiO${}_{3}$ thin fil…
Sr$_{2}$FeMoO$_6$ is a double perovskite compound, known for its high temperature behavior. Combining different magnetic and spectroscopic tools, we show that this compound can be driven to rare example of antiferromagnetic metallic state through heavy electron doping. Considering synthesis of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$FeMoO$_6$ (1.0 $\le{x}\le$ 1.5) compounds, we find compelling evidences of antiferromagnetic metallic ground state for $x\ge$1.4. The local structural study on these compounds reveal unusual atomic scale phase distribution in terms of La, Fe and Sr, Mo-rich regions driven by strong La-O c…
In halide perovskites, electrons (holes) exist as electronic (hole) polarons, excitons, free and trapped electrons (holes). Six kinds of collisions could lead to annihilation of electron and hole, three of them involve polaron(s). In the annihilation channel of each collision process, there is a certain probability to form a dying pair which the average distance between electron and hole is smaller than a critical distance. The annihilation probability per unit time of a collision process is a product of the formation probability of the dying pair in the annihilation channel and the annihilati…
