While doping is widely used for tuning physical properties of perovskites in experiments, it remains a challenge to exactly know how doping achieves the desired effects. Here, we propose an empirical and computationally tractable model to understand the effects of doping with Fe-doped BaTiO$_{3}$ as an example. This model assumes that the lattice sites occupied by Fe ion and its nearest six neighbors lose their ability to polarize, giving rise to a small cluster of defective dipoles. Employing this model in Monte-Carlo simulations, many important features like reduced polarization and the convergence of phase transition temperatures, which have been observed experimentally in acceptor doped systems, are successfully obtained. Based on microscopic information of dipole configurations, we provide insights into the driving forces behind doping effects and propose that active dipoles, which exist in proximity to the defective dipoles, can account for experimentally observed phenomena. Close attention to these dipoles are necessary to understand and predict doping effects.
Next generation telecommunication technologies would benefit from strong piezoelectric and ferroelectric response in materials that are compatible with nitride radio-frequency electronic devices. Ferroelectric oxides with perovskite structure have been used in sensors and actuators for half a century, and halide perovskites transformed photovoltaics research in the past decade, but neither of them is compatible with nitride semiconductors. Nitride perovskites, despite numerous computational predictions, have not been experimentally demonstrated and their properties remain unknown. Here we repo…
Using first principles calculations we show that several alkali lead halides potentially present collective ferroelectric polarization. This should occur at least at the nanoscale; it could be detected macroscopically provided it is not concealed by lattice vibrations in the temperature range of stability of the cubic perovskite phase. For potassium lead halides and for alkali lead fluorides, remarkably, the ferroelectric behavior turns hyper-ferroelectric, suggesting a more robust ferroelectric polarization in spite of depolarization potentials induced by charge accumulation on surfaces or in…
Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity has attracted extensive attention since its discovery in the monolayers of van der Waals materials. Here we show that 2D ferroelectricity induced by octahedral rotation distortion is widely present in the perovskite bilayer system through first-principles calculations. The perovskite tolerance factor plays a crucial role in the lattice dynamics and ground-state structure of the perovskite monolayers and bilayers, thus providing an important indicator for screening this hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Generally, the ferroelectric switching via an orthorho…
Doping ferroelectrics with carriers is often detrimental to polarization. This makes the design and discovery of metals that undergo a ferroelectric-like transition challenging. In this letter, we show from first principles that the oxygen octahedral rotations in perovskites are often enhanced by electron doping, and this can be used as a means to strengthen the structural polarization in certain hybrid-improper ferroelectrics -- compounds in which the polarization is not stabilized by the long range Coulomb interactions but is instead induced by a trilinear coupling to octahedral rotations. W…
Molecular ferroelectrics have attracted increasing interests over the past decade due to mechanical flexibility, chemical diversity, environmental friendliness, easy-processing, and lightness. The performance of molecular ferroelectrics is approaching more and more competitive to their inorganic counterparts. Despite the chemical diversity and tunability of the molecular cations or anions, molecular ferroelectrics are not abundant. In particular, physical directed design principles for new discovery or performance optimization are still lacking. Here, through first-principles calculations, we …
Dabconium hybrid perovskites include a number of recently-discovered ferroelectric phases with large spontaneous polarisations. The origin of ferroelectric response has been rationalised in general terms in the context of hydrogen bonding, covalency, and strain coupling. Here we use a combination of simple theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and density functional theory calculations to assess the ability of these microscopic ingredients---together with the always-present through-space dipolar coupling---to account for the emergence of polarisation in these particular systems whilst not in other …
Ferroelectric perovskites have been ubiquitously applied in piezoelectric devices for decades, among which, eco-friendly lead-free (K,Na)NbO3-based materials have been recently demonstrated to be an excellent candidate for sustainable development. Molecular dynamics is a versatile theoretical calculation approach for the investigation of the dynamical properties of ferroelectric perovskites. However, molecular dynamics simulation of ferroelectric perovskites has been limited to simple systems, since the conventional construction of interatomic potential is rather difficult and inefficient. In …
We propose a device model that elucidates the role of domain walls in the photovoltaic effect in multi-domain ferroelectric perovskites. The model accounts for the intricate interplay between ferroelectric polarization, space charges, photo-generation and electronic transport. When applied to bismuth ferrite, results show a significant electric potential step across both 71-degree and 109-degree domain walls, which in turn contributes to the photovoltaic (PV) effect. We also find a strong correlation between polarization and oxygen octahedra tilts, which indicates the nontrivial role of the la…
The stability of high-symmetry $P4mm$ polar phase in eleven ferroelectric perovskite superlattices with the polar discontinuity is studied from first principles. In most superlattices, this phase exhibits either the ferroelectric or the antiferrodistortive instability, or both of them. The structure of the ground state and, for a number of systems, also of metastable phases in these superlattices is found. The spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric properties of superlattices are calculated. The appearance of high piezoelectric coefficients (up to 150-270 pC/N) in some superlattices is ass…
Using first-principles calculations, we estimated the impact of large applied electric E fields on the structural, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of typical ferroelectrics. At large fields, the structural parameters change significantly, decreasing the strain between the different structural phases. This effect favours a polarization rotation model for ferroelectric switching in which the electronic polarization rotates between the directions of tetragonal, rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases. We estimate coercive fields E_c ~31 MV/m and ~52 MV/m at zero temperature for bulk ferroel…
The paper comments on a paper by Dawber and Scott published in Appl. Phys. Lett, 76,1060 (2000) and addendum (ibid. p.3655), which addresses an important issue of the physics of ferroelectric thin films - the role of oxygen vacancies in polarization fatigue. It is shown that the content of this paper (starting equations, calculations, parameters used in calculations and the way the obtained results are compared to the experimental data available in the literature) enables questioning the results and conclusions reported in it.
The momentum-dependent Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-splitting has gained much attention for its highly promising applications in spintronics. In the present work, ab initio density functional theory calculations are performed to study the spin-splitting effect in ferroelectric oxide perovskite KIO3. Our calculations are additionally supported by symmetry adapted two-band k.p Hamiltonian. Non-negligible spin-splitting effect is observed at conduction band minimum (CBm) and valence band maximum (VBM) for rhombohedral R3m and R3c phases. Linear Rashba terms successfully explain the splitting at VB…

Lead free, silicon compatible materials showing large electromechanical responses comparable to, or better than conventional relaxor ferroelectrics, are desirable for various nanoelectromechanical devices and applications. Defect-engineered electrostriction has recently been gaining popularity to obtain enhanced electromechanical responses at sub 100 Hz frequencies. Here, we report record values of electrostrictive strain coefficients (M31) at frequencies as large as 5 kHz (1.04 x 10-14 m2 per V2 at 1 kHz, and 3.87 x 10-15 m2 per V2 at 5 kHz) using A-site and oxygen-deficient barium titanate t…
PbTiO3 has the highest tetragonal distortion (c/a=1.064) and highest spontaneous polarization among perovskite titanates. But, it is hazardous and hence one needs to reduce Pb content by substituting or reducing Pb content for use in applications. Pb(1-x)(K0.5Sm0.5)xTiO3 (0&x&0.5) perovskite powders were synthesized by sol-gel process, where Pb2+ was replaced by a combination of K+10.5Sm+30.5 (equivalent charge and comparable ionic radius) providing an excellent substitution model to study changes in structural and electrical properties. Vibrational properties and dielectric properties are mod…
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are introducing new directions in the 2D materials landscape. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and spin-orbit interactions play a key role in their optoelectronic properties. We perform a detailed study on a recently synthesized ferroelectric 2D-HOIP, (AMP)PbI$_4$ (AMP = 4-aminomethyl-piperidinium). The calculated polarization and Rashba parameter are in excellent agreement with experimental values. We report a striking new effect, i.e., an extraordinarily large Rashba anisotropy that is tunable by ferroelectric polarization:…
We investigate the crystal structure in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ with high accuracy of the order of 10$^{-3}$ Angstrom for an atomic displacement. The large atomic displacement for Mn ion from the centerosymmetric position, comparable with the off-centering distortion in the tetragonal ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$, is observed in the ferroelectric phase ($T_\mathrm{N}$ $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{C}$). In stark contrast, in the multiferroic phase ($T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{N}$), the atomic displacement for Mn ion is suppressed, but those for O ions are enlarged. T…
Design of novel artificial materials based on ferroelectric perovskites relies on the basic principles of electrostatic coupling and in-plane lattice matching. These rules state that the out-of-plane component of the electric displacement field and the in-plane components of the strain are preserved across a layered superlattice, provided that certain growth conditions are respected. Intense research is currently directed at optimizing materials functionalities based on these guidelines, often with remarkable success. Such principles, however, are of limited practical use unless one disposes o…
Bulk chalcogenide perovskite BaZrS3 (BZS), with a direct band gap in visible region, is an important photovoltaic material, albeit with limited applicability owing to its antiferroelectric (AF) nature. Presently, ferroelectric (FE) perovskite-based photovoltaics are attracting enormous attention for environmental stability and better energy conversion efficiency through enhanced charge separation, owing to loss of center of inversion symmetry. We report on antiferroelectric-ferroelectric (AF-FE) phases of BZS thin film, grown with chemical vapor deposition (CVD), using temperature-dependent Ra…
The magnetic order, spin dynamics, and crystal structure of the multiferroic Sr0.56Ba0.44MnO3 have been investigated using neutron and x-ray scattering. Ferroelectricity develops at TC=305 K with a polarization of 4.2 microC/cm2 associated with the displacements of the Mn ions, while the Mn4+ spins order below TN = 200 K into a simple G-type commensurate magnetic structure. Below TN the ferroelectric order decreases dramatically demonstrating that the two order parameters are strongly coupled. The ground state spin dynamics are characterized by a spin gap of 4.6(5) meV and the magnon density o…
The low thermal conductivity of piezoelectric perovskites is a challenge for high power transducer applications. We report first principles calculations of the thermal conductivity of ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ and the cubic nearly ferroelectric perovskite KTaO$_3$. The calculated thermal conductivity of PbTiO$_3$ is much lower than that of KTaO$_3$ in accord with experiment. Analysis of the results shows that the reason for the low thermal conductivity of PbTiO$_3$ is the presence of low frequency optical phonons associated with the polar modes. These are less dispersive in PbTiO$_3$, leading to…
Recently, the perovskite BiCoO$_3$ has been shown experimentally to be isostructural with PbTiO$_3$, while simultaneously the $d^6$ Co$^{3+}$ ion has a high spin ground state with $C$-type antiferromagnetic ordering. Using hybrid density functional calculations, we investigate the atomic, electronic and magnetic structure of BiCoO$_3$ to elucidate the origin of the multiferroic state. To begin with, we perform a qualitative trend sudy of the role of $d$ electrons in affecting the tendency for perovskite materials to exhibit a ferroelectric distortion; this work initially explores a qualitative…
While nature provides a plethora of perovskite materials, only a few exhibits large ferroelectricity and possibly multiferroicity. The majority of perovskite materials have the non-polar CaTiO$_3$(CTO)structure, limiting the scope of their applications. Based on effective Hamiltonian model as well as first-principles calculations, we propose a general thin-film design method to stabilize the functional BiFeO$_3$(BFO)-type structure, which is a common metastable structure in widespread CaTiO$_3$-type perovskite oxides. It is found that the improper antiferroelectricity in CTO-type perovskite an…
High-temperature phase behavior in the system LixNa1-xNbO3 has been studied by using high-resolution powder neutron diffraction. Each of the three compositions studied in the Na-rich part of the phase diagram (x = 0.03, 0.08 and 0.12) shows evidence for distinct and complex structural modulations based on different tilting schemes of NbO6 octahedral units. Whilst octahedral tilting is prevalent in the structural chemistry of perovskites the nature of complexity of the phases observed here is unprecedented. Neither of the long-range tilt phases observed in NaNbO3 itself occurs here; instead a n…
