We developed a multi-level lithography process to fabricate graphene p-n-p junctions with the novel geometry of contactless, suspended top gates. This fabrication procedure minimizes damage or doping to the single atomic layer, which is only exposed to conventional resists and developers. The process does not require special equipment for depositing gate dielectrics or releasing sacrificial layers, and is compatible with annealing procedures that improve device mobility. Using this technique, we fabricate graphene devices with suspended local top gates, where the creation of high quality graphene p-n-p junctions is confirmed by transport data at zero and high magnetic fields.
We have performed a detailed study of the time stability and reproducibility of sub-micron $Al/AlO_{x}/Al$ tunnel junctions, fabricated using standard double angle shadow evaporations. We have found that by aggressively cleaning the substrate before the evaporations, thus preventing any contamination of the junction, we obtained perfectly stable oxide barriers. We also present measurements on large ensembles of junctions which prove the reproducibility of the fabrication process. The measured tunnel resistance variance in large ensembles of identically fabricated junctions is in the range of o…
Measurements of fractional multiples of the ν=2 plateau quantized Hall resistance (R_H {\approx} 12906 Ω) were enabled by the utilization of multiple current terminals on millimetre-scale graphene p-n junction devices fabricated with interfaces along both lateral directions. These quantum Hall resistance checkerboard devices have been demonstrated to match quantized resistance outputs numerically calculated with the LTspice circuit simulator. From the devices' functionality, more complex embodiments of the quantum Hall resistance checkerboard were simulated to highlight the parameter space wit…
We present a novel shadow evaporation technique for the realization of junctions and capacitors. The design by E-beam lithography of strongly asymmetric undercuts on a bilayer resist enables in-situ fabrication of junctions and capacitors without the use of the well-known suspended bridge[1]. The absence of bridges increases the mechanical robustness of the resist mask as well as the accessible range of the junction size, from 0.01 to more than 10000 micron square. We have fabricated Al/AlOx/Al Josephson junctions, phase qubit and capacitors using a 100kV E- beam writer. Although this high vol…
Superconducting junctions are widely used in multitude of applications ranging from quantum information science and sensing to solid-state cooling. Traditionally, such devices must be fabricated on flat substrates using standard lithographic techniques. In this study, we demonstrate a highly versatile method that allows for superconducting junctions to be fabricated on a more complex topography. It is based on maskless direct laser writing (DLW) two-photon lithography, which allows writing in 3D space. We show that high-quality normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions can b…
We fabricate and investigate high quality graphene devices with contactless, suspended top gates, and demonstrate formation of graphene pnp junctions with tunable polarity and doping levels. The device resistance displays distinct oscillations in the npn regime, arising from the Fabry-Perot interference of holes between the two pn interfaces. At high magnetic fields, we observe well-defined quantum Hall plateaus, which can be satisfactorily fit to theoretical calculations based on the aspect ratio of the device.
We present a new process for fabricating vertical NbN-MgO-NbN Josephson junctions using self-aligned silicon nitride spacers. It allows for a wide range of junction areas from 0.02 um^2 to several 100 um^2. At the same time, it is suited for the implementation of complex microwave circuits with transmission line impedances ranging from < 1 Ohm to > 1 kOhm. The constituent thin films and the finished junctions are characterized. The latter are shown to have high gap voltages (> 4 mV) and low sub-gap leakage currents.
A novel way to arrive at a single molecule junction in the partially wet phase is described. The fabrication of this device makes use of a natural drying process. Details are provided concerning the fabrication of the device and the related material choices. In addition a process description is provided with a step by step approach for creating the partially wet phase molecular MCB junction.
We present a structure and a fabrication method for superconducting tunnel junctions down to the dimensions of 200 nm using i-line UV lithography. The key element is a side-wall-passivating spacer structure (SWAPS) which is shaped for smooth crossline contacting and low parasitic capacitance. The SWAPS structure enables formation of junctions with dimensions at or below the lithography-limited linewidth. An additional benefit is avoiding the excessive use of amorphous dielectric materials which is favorable in sub-Kelvin microwave applications often plagued by nonlinear and lossy dielectrics. …
We report on the fabrication of hybrid molecular devices employing multilayer graphene (MLG) flakes which are patterned with a constriction using a helium ion microscope (HIM) or an oxygen plasma etch. The patterning step allows for the localization of a few-nanometer gap, created by electroburning, that can host single molecules or molecular ensembles. By controlling the width of the sculpted constriction, we regulate the critical power at which the electroburning process begins. We estimate the flake temperature given the critical power and find that at low powers it is possible to electrobu…
Aluminium oxide (AlO$_\mathrm{x}$) tunnel junctions are important components in a range of nanoelectric devices including superconducting qubits where they can be used as Josephson junctions. While many improvements in the reproducibility and reliability of qubits have been made possible through new circuit designs, there are still knowledge gaps in the relevant materials science. A better understanding of how fabrication conditions affect the density, uniformity, and elemental composition of the oxide barrier may lead to the development of lower noise and more reliable nanoelectronics and qua…

Here, we examine the effect of the edge-contact fabrication process on the transparency of the superconducting aluminum-graphene junction. We show significant improvement in the transparency of our superconductor-graphene junctions by promoting the chemical component of the edge contact etch process. Our results compare favorably with state-of-the-art graphene Josephson junctions. The findings of our study contribute to advancing the fabrication knowledge of…
We report fabrication and measurement of a device where closely-placed two parallel InAs nanowires (NWs) are contacted by source and drain normal metal electrodes. Established technique includes selective deposition of double nanowires onto a previously defined gate region. By tuning the junction with the finger bottom gates, we confirmed the formation of parallel double quantum dots, one in each NW, with a finite electrostatic coupling between each other. With the fabrication technique established in this study, devices proposed for more advanced experiments, such as Cooper-pair splitting and…
Herein we discuss the fabrication of ballistic suspended graphene nanostructures supplemented with local gating. Using in-situ current annealing, we show that exceptional high mobilities can be obtained in these devices. A detailed description is given of the fabrication of bottom and different top-gate structures, which enable the realization of complex graphene structures. We have studied the basic building block, the p-n junction in detail, where a striking oscillating pattern was observed, which can be traced back to Fabry-Perot oscillations that are localized in the electronic cavities fo…
Highly transmissive ballistic junctions are demonstrated between Nb and the two-dimensional electron gas formed at an InAs/AlSb heterojunction. A reproducible fabrication protocol is presented yielding high critical supercurrent values. Current-voltage characteristics were measured down to 0.4 K and the observed supercurrent behavior was analyzed within a ballistic model in the clean limit. This investigation allows us to demonstrate an intrinsic interface transmissivity approaching 90%. The reproducibility of the fabrication protocol makes it of interest for the experimental study of InAs-bas…
In this work we have analysed the deterimental effect on conductance caused by diffusion of hydrogen atoms in interstitial voids during fabrication process of magnesium oxide barrier of an Fe MgO Fe magnetic tunnel junction, using first principle calculations. This diffusion of hydrogen atoms in interstitial voids in barrier disturbs a certain kind of symmetry possessed by magnesium oxide often termed as delta 1 state symmetry. Distortion in delta 1 state symmetry tempers the condutance through the magnetic tunnel junction specially in parallel configuration, which in turn reduces the Tunnelli…

Data on the wafer-scale distributions of the residual magneti…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of vertical spin-valve structures using a thick epitaxial MgO barrier as spacer layer and a graphene-passivated Ni film as bottom ferromagnetic electrode. The devices show robust and scalable tunnel magnetoresistance, with several changes of sign upon varying the applied bias voltage. These findings are explained by a model of phonon-assisted transport mechanisms that relies on the peculiarity of the band structure and spin density of states at the hybrid graphene|Ni interface.
We have developed a lithography-free, all-dry process for fabricating graphene devices using an ultrathin quartz filament as a shadow mask to avoid possible contamination of graphene during lithographic process. This technique was used to prepare devices for electrical transport as well as planar tunnel junction studies of n-layer graphene (nLG), with n = 1, 2, 3 and higher. We observed localization behavior and an apparent reduction of density of states (DOS) near the Fermi energy in nLG.
We have developed a fabrication process for nanoscale tunnel junctions which includes focused-ion-beam etching from different directions. By applying the process to a Nb/(Al-)Al_2O_3/Nb trilayer, we have fabricated a Nb single-electron transistor (SET), and characterized the SET at low temperatures, T=0.04-40 K. The superconducting gap energy and the transition temperature of the Nb SET agree with the bulk values, which suggests high quality Nb junctions. The single-electron charging energy of the SET is estimated to be larger than 1 K.
We present a lumped-element Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) utilizing a straightforward fabrication process involving a single electron beam lithography step followed by double-angle evaporation of aluminum and in-situ oxidation. The Josephson junctions forming the SQUID are fabricated using bridgeless shadow evaporation technique, which enables reliable fabrication of relatively large ($\sim9~\mathrm{μm^2}$) junctions. Our strongly coupled flux-pumped JPA achieves 20~dB gain with 95~MHz bandwidth around 5~GHz, while the center frequency is tunable by more than 1~GHz, with the additional …
We report the successful fabrication of planar V/Cu/V mesoscopic Josephson weak-links of different size, and the analysis of their low-temperature behavior. The shorter junctions exhibit critical currents of several tens of microA at 350 mK, while Josephson coupling persists up to ~2.7 K. Good agreement is obtained by comparing the measured switching currents to a model which holds in the diffusive regime. Our results demonstrate that V is an excellent candidate for the implementation of superconducting nanodevices operating at a few kelvins.
We report on the fabrication and transport studies of a single-layer graphene p-n junction. Carrier type and density in two adjacent regions are individually controlled by electrostatic gating using a local top gate and a global back gate. A functionalized Al203 oxide that adheres to graphene and does not significantly affect its electronic properties is described. Measurements in the quantum Hall regime reveal new plateaus of two-terminal conductance across the junction at 1 and 3/2 times the quantum of conductance, e2/h, consistent with theory.
We report on design and fabrication of a new type of flux qubit that capitalizes on intrinsic properties of submicron YBCO grain boundary junctions. The operating point is protected from the fluctuations of the external fields, already on the classical level; the effects of external perturbations are absent, to the second or third order, depending on the character of the coupling. We propose an experiment to observe quantum tunneling and Rabi oscillations in the qubit. Estimate of the decoherence due to fluctuations of the external flux is presented.
Focused-ion-beam milling is used to fabricate nanostencil masks suitable for the fabrication of magnetic nanostructures relevant for spin transfer torque studies. Nanostencil masks are used to define the device dimensions prior to the growth of the thin film stack. They consist of a wet etch resistant top layer and an insulator on top of a pre-patterned bottom electrode. The insulator supports a hard mask and gives rise to an undercut by its selective etching. The approach is demonstrated by fabricating current perpendicular to the plane Co/Cu/Co nanopillar junctions, which exhibit current-ind…
Advances in the fabrication and characterization of nanoscale systems now allow for a deeper understanding of one of the most basic issues in science and technology: the flow of energy at the microscopic level. In this Colloquium we survey recent advances and present understanding of physical mechanisms of energy transport in nanostructures, focusing mainly on molecular junctions and atomic wires. We examine basic issues such as thermal conductivity, thermoelectricity, local temperature and heating, and the relation between energy current density and temperature gradient - known as Fourier's l…
We report the fabrication and measurement of top gated epitaxial graphene p-n junctions where exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is used as the gate dielectric. The four-terminal longitudinal resistance across a single junction is well quantized at the von Klitzing constant R_K with a relative uncertainty of 10-7. After the exploration of numerous parameter spaces, we summarize the conditions upon which these devices could function as potential resistance standards. Furthermore, we offer designs of programmable electrical resistance standards over six orders of magnitude by using extern…
We investigate a wafer scale tunnel junction fabrication method, where a plasma etched via through a dielectric layer covering bottom Al electrode defines the tunnel junction area. The ex-situ tunnel barrier is formed by oxidation of the bottom electrode in the junction area. Room temperature resistance mapping over a 150 mm wafer give local deviation values of the tunnel junction resistance that fall below 7.5 % with an average of 1.3 %. The deviation is further investigated by sub-1 K measurements of a device, which has one tunnel junction connected to four arrays consisting of N junctions (…
Josephson junction field effect transistors (JJ-FET) share design similarities with metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors, except for the source/drain contacts being replaced by superconductors. Similarly, the super current due to proximity effect is tunable by the gate voltage. In this study, we examine the feasibility of JJ-FET-based Boolean logic and memory elements for cryogenic computing, in light of recent advances in novel materials and fabrication techniques. Using a two-dimensional ballistic transport JJ-FET model, we implement circuit level simulations for JJ-FET logic g…
