A method of a consistent consideration of the phonon contributions to mass and gap operators in non-magic nuclei is developed in the so-called g^2 approximation, where g is the low-lying phonon creation amplitude. It includes simultaneous accounting for both the usual non-local terms and the phonon tadpole ones. The relations which allow the tadpoles to be calculated without any new parameters are derived. As an application of the results, the role of the phonon tadpoles in the single-particle strength distribution and in the single-particle energies and gap values has been considered. Relation to the problem of the surface nature of pairing is discussed.
Single-particle levels of seven magic nuclei are calculated within the Energy Density Functional (EDF) method by Fayans et al. Three versions of the EDF are used, the initial Fayans functional DF3 and its two variations, DF3-a and DF3-b, with different values of spin-orbit parameters. Comparison is made with predictions of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method with the HFB-17 functional. For the DF3-a functional, phonon coupling (PC) corrections to single-particle energies are found self-consistently with an approximate account for the tadpole diagram. Account for the PC corrections improves agreemen…
A method is developed to consider the particle-phonon coupling (PC) effects in the problem of finding odd-even double mass differences (DMD) of magic nuclei within the approach starting from the free $NN$-potential. Three PC effects are taken into account, the phonon induced interaction, the renormalization of the "ends" due to the $Z$-factors and the change of the single-particle energies. We use the perturbation theory in $g^2_L$, where $g_L$ is the vertex of the $L$-phonon creation. PC corrections to single-particle energies are found self-consistently with an approximate account for the so…
A method is presented to evaluate the particle-phonon coupling (PC) corrections to the single-particle energies (SPEs) in semi-magic nuclei. In such nuclei always there is a collective low-lying $2^+$ phonon, and a strong mixture of single-particle and particle-phonon states often occurs. As in magic nuclei, the so-called $g^2_L$ approximation, where $g_L$ is the vertex of the $L$-phonon creation, can be used for finding the PC correction $δΣ^{\rm PC}(\varepsilon)$ to the initial mass operator $Σ_0$. In addition to the usual pole diagram, the phonon "tadpole" diagram is also taken into account…
The structure of the collective low-energy $J^π=0^{-}$ (T=0 and T=1) modes is studied for a doubly magic nucleus in a schematic analytic model of RPA. The $0^{-}$ phonon states ($T= 0,1$) lie at energies $E_{T=0}(0^{-}) \alt ω$ and $E_{T=1}(0^{-}) > ω$, where $ω$ is the oscillator frequency. The matrix elements of P-odd and P- and T-odd weak one-body potentials connecting the ground state to these $0^{-}$-states, $W_{coll}$, are enhanced by the factor $\sim 2 (\fracω{E})^{1/2}A^{1/3} \sim 10$ as compared to the single-particle value $w_{sp}$ what can result in values $|W_{coll}| \sim 20-30 eV$…
A method is developed to consider the particle-phonon coupling (PC) effects in the calculation of the odd-even double mass differences (DMD) in semi-magic nuclei starting from the free $NN$-potential. The PC correction $δΣ^{\rm PC}$ to the mass operator $Σ$ is found in $g_L^2$-approximation, $g_L$ being the vertex of creating the $L$-phonon. The tadpole term of the operator $δΣ^{\rm PC}$ is taken into account. The method is based on a direct, without any use of the perturbation theory, solution of the Dyson equation with the mass operator $Σ(ε){=}Σ_0{+}δΣ^{\rm PC}(ε)$ for finding the single-pa…
The description of the direct nucleon decay of high-spin subbarrier one-particle states in near-magic nuclei is attempted using a simple optical model and the simplest version of the coupled-channel approach. The branching ratios for the direct decay of the several single-neutron states in $^{209}Pb$ and $^{91}Zr$ to the ground state and to the low-lying collective states of $^{208}Pb$ and $^{90}Zr$, respectively, are evaluated. Results are compared with recent experimental data.
Phonon coupling (PC) corrections to magnetic moments of odd neighbors of magic and semi-magic nuclei are analyzed within the self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems (TFFS) based on the Energy Density Functional by Fayans et al. The perturbation theory in g_L^2 is used where g_L is the phonon-particle coupling vertex. A model is developed with separating non-regular PC contributions, the rest is supposed to be regular and included into the standard TFFS parameters. An ansatz is proposed to take into account the so-called tadpole term which ensures the total angular momentum conservation …
We study the effects of correlations beyond the independent particle model in the evaluation of neutron skins of various neutron-rich doubly magic nuclei. We consider short- and long-range correlations to take into account the presence of the strongly repulsive core of the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction and collective nuclear phenomena, respectively. Despite the strong sensitivity on the structure of the nucleus considered, our results indicate that, in general, correlations increase the values of the neutron skins.
Recent results of the Fayans energy density functional (EDF) for spherical nuclei are reviewed. A comparison is made with predictions of several Skyrme EDFs. The charge radii and characteristics of the first 2^+ excitations in semi-magic nuclei are briefly discussed. The single-particle spectra of doubly magic nuclei are considered in more detail. The phonon-particle coupling effects are analyzed including the so-called tadpole term.
Octupole vibrations are studied in some doubly magic nuclei using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory with a Skyrme energy density functional. Through the use of the linear response theory, the energies and transition amplitudes of the low-lying vibrational modes for each of the nuclei were determined. Energies were found to be close to experimental results. However, transition amplitudes, quantified by the deformation parameter $β_3$, are underestimated by TDHF. A comparison with single-particle excitations on the Hartree-Fock ground-state shows that the collective octupole vibratio…
The self-consistent model, developed previously to describe phonon coupling (PC) effects in magnetic moments of odd magic and semi-magic nuclei, is extended to quadrupole moments. It is based on the theory of finite Fermi systems with the use of the perturbation theory in $g_L^2$, where $g_L$ is the vertex creating the $L$-phonon. Accounting for the phonon tadpole diagrams is an important ingredient of this model. The calculation scheme is based on the Fayans energy density functional DF3-a and does not contain any adjusted parameters. The odd In and Sb isotopes are considered, which are the p…
Nuclear $β$-decay in magic nuclei is investigated, taking into account the coupling between particle and collective vibrations,on top of self-consistent random phase approximation calculations based on Skyrme density functionals. The low-lying Gamow-Teller strength is shifted downwards and at times becomes fragmented; as a consequence, the $β$-decay half-lives are reduced due to the increase of the phase space available for the decay. In some cases, this leads to a very good agreement between theoretical and experimental lifetimes: this happens, in particular, in the case of the Skyrme force S…
In nuclear physics a magic number is defined as the nucleon number, which is separated by a significantly large single-particle energy gap from the next nucleon. Magic numbers define the nuclear shells, which are considered to be active, only if they are partially occupied by nucleons. As a consequence the single particle interactions of the valence nucleons lead to the description of the collective properties of the whole nucleus in the shell model theory. But phenomena as the island of inversion, the shape coexistence and the break down of the N=20 magic number reveal that the above definiti…
Odd-even double mass differences (DMD) of magic nuclei are found within the approach starting from the free $NN$ interaction with account for particle-phonon coupling (PC) effects. We consider three PC effects: the phonon induced effective interaction, the renormalization of the "ends" due to the $Z$-factor corresponding to the pole PC contribution to the nucleon mass operator and the change of the single-particle energies. The perturbation theory in $g^2_L$, where $g_L$ is the vertex of the $L$-phonon creation, is used for PC calculations. PC corrections to single-particle energies are found …
Some developments of nuclear-structure physics uniquely related to Copenhagen School are sketched based on theoretical considerations versus experimental findings and one-particle versus collective aspects. Based on my personal overview I pick up the following topics; (1) Study of vibration in terms of particle-vibration coupling; (2) One-particle motion in deformed and rotating potentials, and yrast spectroscopy in high-spin physics; (3) Triaxial shape in nuclei: wobbling motion and chiral bands; (4) Nuclear structure of drip line nuclei: in particular, shell-structure (or magic numbers) chan…
We present a novel nuclear energy density functional method to calculate spectroscopic properties of atomic nuclei. Intrinsic nuclear quadrupole deformations and rotational frequencies are considered simultaneously as the degrees of freedom within a symmetry conserving configuration mixing framework. The present method allows the study of nuclear states with collective and single-particle character. We calculate the fascinating structure of the semi-magic 44S nucleus as a first application of the method, obtaining an excellent quantitative agreement both with the available experimental data an…
A new model for calculating nuclear level densities is investigated. The single-nucleon spectra are calculated in a relativistic mean-field model with energy-dependent effective mass, which yields a realistic density of single-particle states at the Fermi energy. These microscopic single-nucleon states are used in a fast combinatorial algorithm for calculating the non-collective excitations of nuclei. The method, when applied to magic and semi-magic nuclei, such as $^{60}$Ni, $^{114}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb, reproduces the cumulative number of experimental states at low excitation energy, as well as…
We show that the collectivity of the particle-hole wave function of low-lying octupole 3^- states in doubly magic nuclei is mainly due to the neutron-proton interaction. Both the enhanced reduced transition probability to the ground state, B(E3;3-_1 -> 0+_1), and the coupling of the octupole excitation to a nucleon result from the coherent action of all the components of the collective state. The results obtained with a realistic shell-model interaction both for 208Pb and 209Pb agree with the geometric collective model of Bohr and Mottelson, where octupole excitations are associated with phono…
We present a model which describes the properties of odd-even nuclei with one nucleon more, or less, with respect to the magic number. In addition to the effects related to the unpaired nucleon, we consider those produced by the excitation of the closed shell core. By using a single particle basis generated with Hartree-Fock calculations, we describe the polarization of the doubly magic-core with Random Phase Approximation collective wave functions. In every step of the calculation, and for all the nuclei considered, we use the same finite-range nucleon-nucleon interaction. We apply our model …
The collective ground-state correlations stemming from low-lying quadrupole excitations are computed microscopically. To that end, the self-consistent mean-field model is employed on the basis of the Skyrme-Hartre-Fock (SHF) functional augmented by BCS pairing. The microscopic-macroscopic mapping is achieved by quadrupole-constrained mean-field calculations which are processed further in the generator-coordinate method (GCM) at the level of the Gaussian overlap approximation (GOA). We study the correlation effects on energy, charge radii, and surface thickness for a great variety of semi-magic…
We review an extension of Migdal's Theory of Finite Fermi Systems which has been developed and applied to collective vibrations in closed shell nuclei in the past ten years. This microscopic approach is based on a consistent use of the Green function method. Here one considers in a consistent way more complex 1p1h$\otimes$phonon configurations beyond the RPA correlations. Moreover, these configurations are not only included in the excited states but also explicitly in the ground states of nuclei. The method has been applied to the calculation of the strength distribution and transition densiti…
A nuclear structure model based on linear response theory (i.e., Random Phase Approximation) and which includes pairing correlations and anharmonicities (coupling with collective vibrations), has been implemented in such a way that it can be applied on the same footing to magic as well as open-shell nuclei. As applications, we have chosen to study the dipole excitations both in well-known, stable isotopes like $^{208}$Pb and $^{120}$Sn as well as in the neutron-rich, unstable $^{132}$Sn nucleus, by addressing in the latter case the question about the nature of the low-lying strength. Our resul…
The isoscalar (IS) and isovector (IV) quadrupole responses of nuclei are systematically investigated using the time-dependent Skyrme Energy Density Functional including pairing in the BCS approximation. Using two different Skyrme functionals, Sly4 and SkM*, respectively 263 and 304 nuclei have been found to be spherical along the nuclear charts. The time-dependent evolution of these nuclei has been systematically performed giving access to their quadrupole responses. It is shown that the mean-energy of the collective high energy state globally reproduces the experimental IS and IV collective e…
The Green function formalism with a consistent account for phonon coupling (PC), based on the self-consistent theory of finite Fermi-systems, is applied for pygmy- and giant multipole resonances in magic nuclei with the aim to consider particle-hole (ph) and complex 1p1h phonon configurations. A new equation for the effective field, which describes nuclear polarizability, is obtained. It contains new PC contributions which are of interest in the energy region under consideration. They are due to: i)the tadpole effect in the standard ph-propagator, ii)two new induced interactions (caused by the…
In this work we look at the low lying nuclear structure of several N=Z nuclei residing between the doubly magic nucei ^{40} Ca and ^{100} Sn. Using large shell model codes we calculate and discuus the systematics of enegies. We show energy levels, B(E2)'s, static quadrupule moments and g factors. In all cases we compare the results of 2 different interactions which yield significanly different occupation numbers. We compare with the simplest versions of the rotational and vibrational models. By examinnig B(E2)'s and static quadrupole moments we make associations with collective models find tha…
(The systematics of photon absorption cross sections in nuclei and small metal particles are examined as a function of the number of constituent fermions $A$. It is pointed out that the shell-structure-linked oscillations in the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the photoneutron cross section in nuclei, earlier recognized for $A > 63$, in fact persist down to the lightest nuclei. Averaging over the oscillations or focusing on the lower envelope of the oscillating curve (magic nuclei), the FWHM is seen to generally decrease with increasing $A$, consistent with $A^{-1/3}$, a dependence which …
In this paper we present a new formalism to implement the nuclear particle-vibration coupling (PVC) model. The key issue is the proper treatment of the continuum, that is allowed by the coordinate space representation. Our formalism, based on the use of zero-range interactions like the Skyrme forces, is microscopic and fully self-consistent. We apply it to the case of neutron single-particle states in $^{40}$Ca, $^{208}$Pb and $^{24}$O. The first two cases are meant to illustrate the comparison with the usual (i.e., discrete) PVC model. However, we stress that the present approach allows to ca…
The spin-isospin response of stable and exotic nuclei is investigated in the framework of the proton-neutron relativistic quasiparticle time-blocking approximation (pn-RQTBA). Based on the Covariant Density Functional Theory, this method extends the proton-neutron Relativistic Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (pn-RQRPA) by including the coupling between single quasiparticles and collective nuclear vibrations. In the charge-exchange channel, this coupling generates a time-dependent effective interaction between proton and neutron quasiparticles. The particle-hole component of this inter…
Background: Two-phonon excitations originating from the coupling of two collective one-phonon states are of great interest in nuclear structure physics. One possibility to generate low-lying $E1$ excitations is the coupling of quadrupole and octupole phonons. Purpose: In this work, the $γ$-decay behavior of candidates for the $(2_1^+\otimes 3_1^-)_{1^-}$ state in the doubly-magic nucleus $^{40}$Ca and in the heavier and semi-magic nucleus $^{140}$Ce is investigated. Methods: $(\vecγ,γ')$ experiments have been carried out at the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source (HI$γ$S) facility in combination wit…
We perform systematic calculations of pairing gaps in semi-magic nuclei across the nuclear chart using the Energy Density Functional method and a {\it non-empirical} pairing functional derived, without further approximation, at lowest order in the two-nucleon vacuum interaction, including the Coulomb force. The correlated single-particle motion is accounted for by the SLy4 semi-empirical functional. Rather unexpectedly, both neutron and proton pairing gaps thus generated are systematically close to experimental data. Such a result further suggests that missing effects, i.e. higher partial-wave…
We perform an analysis of a binding energy difference called delta V_{pn}(N,Z) =- 1/4(E(Z,N)-E(Z,N-2)-E(Z-2,N)+ E(Z-2,N-2) in the framework of a realistic nuclear model. Using the angular-momentum and particle-number projected generator coordinate method and the Skyrme interaction SLy4, we analyze the contribution brought to delta V_{pn} by static deformation and dynamic fluctuations around the mean-field ground state. Our method gives a good overall description of delta V_{pn} throughout the chart of nuclei with the exception of the anomaly related to the Wigner energy along the N=Z line. The…
