Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$. Under some assumptions, we prove that there exists a positive function $φ$ solution of the following Yamabe type equation Δφ+ hφ= \tilde h φ^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}} where $h\in L^p(M)$, $p>n/2$ and $\tilde h\in \mathbb R$. We give the regularity of $φ$ with respect to the value of $p$. Finally, we consider the results in geometry when $g$ is a singular Riemannian metric and $h=\frac{n-2}{4(n-1)}R_g$, where $R_g$ is the scalar curvature of $g$.
We study the convergence of complete non-compact conformally flat solutions to the Yamabe flow to Yamabe steady solitons. We also prove the existence of Type II singularities which develop at either a finite time $T$ or as $t \to +\infty$.
We study the asymptotic behavior of local solutions to the Yamabe equation near an isolated singularity, when the metric is not conformally flat. We prove that, in dimension $6$, any solution is asymptotically close to a Fowler solution, which is an extension of the same result for lower dimensions by F.C. Marques in 2008.
We study the Yamabe flow on a Riemannian manifold of dimension $m\geq3$ minus a closed submanifold of dimension $n$ and prove that there exists an instantaneously complete solution if and only if $n>\frac{m-2}{2}$. In the remaining cases $0\leq n\leq\frac{m-2}{2}$ including the borderline case, we show that the removability of the $n$-dimensional singularity is necessarily preserved along the Yamabe flow. In particular, the flow must remain geodesically incomplete as long as it exists. This is contrasted with the two-dimensional case, where instantaneously complete solutions always exist.
$σ_k$-Yamabe equations are conformally invariant equations generalizing the classical Yamabe equation. In an earlier work YanYan Li proved that an admissible solution with an isolated singularity at $0\in \mathbb R^n$ to the $σ_k$-Yamabe equation is asymptotically radially symmetric. In this work we prove that an admissible solution with an isolated singularity at $0\in \mathbb R^n$ to the $σ_k$-Yamabe equation is asymptotic to a radial solution to the same equation on $\mathbb R^n \setminus \{0\}$. These results generalize earlier pioneering work in this direction on the classical Yamabe equa…
We construct solutions for the fractional Yamabe problem that are singular at a prescribed number of isolated points. This seems to be the first time that a gluing method is successfully applied to a non-local problem. The main step is an infinite-dimensional Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method, that reduces the problem to an (infinite dimensional) Toda type system.
We study a particular class of open manifolds. In the category of Riemannian manifolds these are complete manifolds with cylindrical ends. We give a natural setting for the conformal geometry on such manifolds including an appropriate notion of the cylindrical Yamabe constant/invariant. This leads to a corresponding version of the Yamabe problem on cylindrical manifolds. We affirmatively solve this Yamabe problem: we prove the existence of minimizing metrics and analyze their singularities near infinity. These singularities turn out to be of very particular type: either almost conical or almos…
We consider the unnormalized Yamabe flow on manifolds with conical singularities. Under certain geometric assumption on the initial cross-section we show well posedness of the short time solution in the $L^q$-setting. Moreover, we give a picture of the deformation of the conical tips under the flow by providing an asymptotic expansion of the evolving metric close to the boundary in terms of the initial local geometry. Due to the blow up of the scalar curvature close to the singularities we use maximal $L^q$-regularity theory for conically degenerate operators.
We introduce new invariants of a Riemannian singular space, the local Yamabe and Sobolev constants, and then go on to prove a general version of the Yamabe theorem under that the global Yamabe invariant of the space is strictly less than one or the other of these local invariants. This rests on a small number of structural assumptions about the space and of the behavior of the scalar curvature function on its smooth locus. The second half of this paper shows how this result applies in the category of smoothly stratified pseudomanifolds, and we also prove sharp regularity for the solutions on t…
In the first part of this thesis, we study the Yamabe problem with singularities, that we can announce as follow: Given a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, find a constant scalar curvature metric, conformal to $g$, when $g$ has not necessarily the usual regularity (it can be $C^1$). To solve this problem, we start the study of the Yamabe type equations. We show that all the known properties in the smooth case are still valid. Under some assumptions, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions. The second part is dedicated to the Hebey-Vaugon conjecture, stated in their paper about th…
We consider the problem of constructing solutions to the fractional Yamabe problem that are singular at a given smooth sub-manifold, and we establish the classical gluing method of Mazzeo and Pacard for the scalar curvature in the fractional setting. This proof is based on the analysis of the model linearized operator, which amounts to the study of an ODE, and thus our main contribution here is the development of new methods coming from conformal geometry and scattering theory for the study of non-local ODEs. No traditional phase-plane analysis is available here. Instead, first, we provide a r…
This paper consists of two parts. In the first part we show that in odd dimension, as well as in even dimension below the critical weight (i.e. half the dimension), the logarithmic singularities of Schwartz kernels and Green kernels of conformal invariant pseudodifferential operators are linear combinations of Weyl conformal invariants, i.e., of local conformal invariants arising from complete tensorial contractions of the covariant derivatives of the Lorentz ambient metric of Fefferman-Graham. In even dimension and above the critical weight exceptional local conformal invariants may further c…
Based on the relations between scattering operators of asymptotically hyperbolic metrics and Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators of uniformly degenerate elliptic boundary value problems, we formulate fractional Yamabe problems that include the boundary Yamabe problem studied by Escobar. We observe an interesting Hopf type maximum principle together with interplays between analysis of weighted trace Sobolev inequalities and conformal structure of the underlying manifolds, which extend the phenomena displayed in the classic Yamabe problem and boundary Yamabe problem.
The fractional Yamabe problem, proposed by González-Qing (2013, Anal. PDE) is a geometric question which concerns the existence of metrics with constant fractional scalar curvature. It extends the phenomena which were discovered in the classical Yamabe problem and the boundary Yamabe problem to the realm of nonlocal conformally invariant operators. We investigate a non-compactness property of the fractional Yamabe problem by constructing bubbling solutions to its small perturbations.
This paper concerns a fully nonlinear version of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with boundary. We establish some existence results and estimates of solutions.
We present some results on a fully nonlinear version of the Yamabe problem and a Harnack type inequality for general conformally invariant fully nonlinear second order elliptic equations.
In this paper we establish existence and compactness of solutions to a general fully nonlinear version of the Yamabe problem on locally conformally flat Riemannian manifolds with umbilic boundary.
The Yamabe problem concerns finding a conformal metric on a given closed Riemannian manifold so that it has constant scalar curvature. This paper concerns mainly a fully nonlinear version of the Yamabe problem and the corresponding Liouville type problem.
We continue our previous work studying critical exponent semilinear elliptic (and subelliptic) problems which generalize the classical Yamabe problem. In [3] the focus was on metric-measure spaces with an `almost smooth' structure, with stratified spaces furnishing the key examples. The criterion for solvability there is phrased in terms of a strict inequality of the global Yamabe invariant with a `local Yamabe invariant', which captures information about the local singular structure. All of this is generalized here to the setting of Dirichlet spaces which admit a Sobolev inequality and satisf…
We build blowing-up solutions for linear perturbation of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with umbilic boundary, provided the Weyl tensor is nonzero everywhere on the boundary and the dimension of the manifold is n>10.
We build blowing-up solutions for linear perturbation of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with boundary, provided the dimension of the manifold is n>6 and the trace-free part of the second fundamental form is non-zero everywhere on the boundary.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold, with positive Yamabe quotient, not conformally diffeomorphic to the standard sphere, we prove a priori estimates for solutions to the Yamabe problem. We restrict ourselves to the dimensions less than or equal to 7, where the Positive Mass Theorem is known to be true. We also show that, when the dimension is greater than or equal to 6, the Weyl tensor has to vanish at a point where solutions to the Yamabe equation blow up.
We build blowing-up solutions for a supercritical perturbation of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with umbilic boundary provided the dimension of the manifold is n>7 and that the Weyl tensor W(x) is not vanishing on the boundary of M.
We describe and partially solve a natural Yamabe-type problem on smooth metric measure spaces which interpolates between the Yamabe problem and the problem of finding minimizers for Perelman's $ν$-entropy. This problem reduces in all dimensions on Euclidean space to the characterization of the minimizers of the family of Gagliardo--Nirenberg--Sobolev inequalities studied by Del Pino and Dolbeault. We show that minimizers always exist on a compact manifold provided the so-called weighted Yamabe constant is strictly less than its value on Euclidean space. We also show that strict inequality hold…
We prove compactness of solutions of a fully nonlinear Yamabe problem satisfying a lower Ricci curvature bound, when the manifold is not conformally diffeomorphic to the standard sphere. This allows us to prove the existence of solutions when the associated cone $Γ$ satisfies $μ^+_Γ\le 1$, which includes the $σ_k-$Yamabe problem for $k$ not smaller than half of the dimension of the manifold.
We consider, in the Euclidean setting, a conformal Yamabe-type equation related to a potential generalization of the classical constant scalar curvature problem and which naturally arises in the study of Ricci solitons structures. We prove existence and nonexistence results, focusing on the radial case, under some general hypothesis on the potential.
We define a new formal Riemannian metric on a conformal classes of four-manifolds in the context of the $σ_2$-Yamabe problem. Exploiting this new variational structure we show that solutions are unique unless the manifold is conformally equivalent to the round sphere.
We build blowing-up solutions for a supercritical perturbation of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with boundary, provided the dimension of the manifold is n>6 and the trace-free part of the second fundamental form is non-zero everywhere on the boundary.
Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n. The k-curvature, for k=1,2,..n, is defined as the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tenser. The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k=1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions to the k-Yamabe problem was recently proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky for k>n/2. In this paper we prove the existence of solutions for the remaining cases k <n/2, k=n/2, assuming t…
We construct Delaunay-type solutions for the fractional Yamabe problem with an isolated singularity $(-Δ)^γw = c_{n, γ} w^{\frac{n+2γ}{n-2γ}}, w>0 \ \mbox{in} \ \mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\}$ We follow a variational approach, in which the key is the computation of the fractional Laplacian in polar coordinates.
For a sequence of blow up solutions of the Yamabe equation on non-locally confonformally flat compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension 10 or 11, we establish sharp estimates on its asymptotic profile near blow up points as well as sharp decay estimates of the Weyl tensor and its covariant derivatives at blow up points. If the Positive Mass Theorem held in dimensions 10 and 11, these estimates would imply the compactness of the set of solutions of the Yamabe equation on such manifolds.
We report on some aspects and recent progress in certain problems in the sub-Riemannian CR and quaternionic contact (QC) geometries. The focus are the corresponding Yamabe problems on the round spheres, the Lichnerowicz-Obata first eigenvalue estimates, and the relation between these two problems. A motivation from the Riemannian case highlights new and old ideas which are then developed in the settings of Iwasawa sub-Riemannian geometries.
On a closed balanced manifold, we show that if the Chern scalar curvature is small enough in a certain Sobolev norm then a slightly modified version of the Chern-Yamabe flow~\cite{Angella:2015aa} converges to a solution of the Chern-Yamabe problem. We also prove that if the Chern scalar curvature, on closed almost-Hermitian manifolds, is close enough to a constant function in a Hölder norm then the Chern-Yamabe problem has a solution for generic values of the fundamental constant.
We construct singular solutions to the Yamabe equation using a reduction of the problem in an equivariant setting. This provides a non-trivial geometric example for which the analysis is simpler than in Mazzeo-Pacard program. Our construction provides also a non-trivial example of a weak solution to the Yamabe problem involving an equation with (smooth) coefficients.
A complete solution to the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the seven dimensional sphere is given. Extremals for the Sobolev inequality on the seven dimensional Hesenberg group are explicitly described and the best constant in the $L^2$ Folland-Stein embedding theorem is determined.
We study the Yamabe flow on asymptotically flat manifolds with non-positive Yamabe constant $Y\leq 0$. Previous work by the second and third named authors \cite{ChenWang} showed that while the Yamabe flow always converges in a global weighted sense when $Y>0$, the flow must diverge when $Y\leq 0$. We show here in the $Y\leq 0$ case however that after suitable rescalings, the Yamabe flow starting from any asymptotically flat manifold must converge to the unique positive function which solves the Yamabe problem on a compactification of the original manifold.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold with umbilic boundary, the Yamabe boundary problem studies if there exist conformal scalar-flat metrics such that the boundary has constant mean curvature. In this paper we address to the stability of this problem with respect of perturbation of mean curvature of the boundary and scalar curvature of the manifold. In particular we prove that the Yamabe boundary problem is stable under perturbation of the mean curvature and the scalar curvature from below, while it is not stable if one of the two curvatures is perturbed from above.
We consider asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds whose metrics have Sobolev-class regularity, and introduce several technical tools for studying PDEs on such manifolds. Our results employ two novel families of function spaces suitable for metrics potentially having a large amount of interior differentiability, but whose Sobolev regularity implies only a Hölder continuous conformal structure at infinity. We establish Fredholm theorems for elliptic operators arising from metrics in these families. To demonstrate the utility of our methods, we solve the Yamabe problem in this category. As a specia…
We prove a convergence theorem on the moduli space of constant $σ_{2}$ metrics for conic 4-spheres. We show that when a numerical condition is convergent to the boundary case, the geometry of conic 4-spheres converges to the boundary case while preserving capacity.
We study the stability of compactness of solutions for the Yamabe boundary problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with non umbilic boundary. We prove that the set of solutions of Yamabe boundary problem is a compact set when perturbing the mean curvature of the boundary from below and the scalar curvature with a function whose maximum is not too positive. In addition, we prove the counterpart of the stability result: there exists a blowing up sequence of solutions when we perturb the mean curvature from above or the mean curvature from below and the scalar curvature with a function with a la…
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. We consider the problem (first studied by Escobar in 1992) of finding a conformal metric with constant scalar curvature in the interior and zero mean curvature on the boundary. Using a local test function construction, we are able to settle most cases left open by Escobar's work. Moreover, we reduce the remaining cases to the positive mass theorem.
Assume that $(X, g^+)$ is an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold, $(M, [\bar{h}])$ is its conformal infinity, $ρ$ is the geodesic boundary defining function associated to $\bar{h}$ and $\bar{g} = ρ^2 g^+$. For any $γ\in (0,1)$, we prove that the solution set of the $γ$-Yamabe problem on $M$ is compact in $C^2(M)$ provided that convergence of the scalar curvature $R[g^+]$ of $(X, g^+)$ to $-n(n+1)$ is sufficiently fast as $ρ$ tends to 0 and the second fundamental form on $M$ never vanishes. Since most of the arguments in blow-up analysis performed here is irrelevant to the geometric assumption i…
A complete solution to the quaternionic contact Yamabe equation on the qc sphere of dimension $4n+3$ as well as on the quaternionic Heisenberg group is given. A uniqueness theorem for the qc Yamabe problem in a compact locally 3-Sasakian manifold is shown.
Let M,g a compact Riemannian n-dimensional manifold. It is well know that, under certain hypothesis, in the conformal class of g there are scalar-flat metrics that have the boundary of M as a constant mean curvature hypersurface. Also, under certain hypothesis, it is known that these metrics are a compact set. In this paper we prove that, both in the case of umbilic and non-umbilic boundary, if we linearly perturb the mean curvature term with a negative smooth function, the set of solutions of Yamabe problem is still a compact set.
We study the existence of conformal metrics on non-compact Riemannian manifolds with non-compact boundary, which are complete as metric spaces and have negative constant scalar curvature in the interior and negative constant mean curvature on the boundary. These metrics are constructed on smooth manifolds obtained by removing d-dimensional submanifolds from certain n-dimensional compact spaces locally modelled on generalized solid cones. We prove the existence of such metrics if and only if d>(n-2)/2. Our main theorem is inspired by the classical results by Aviles-McOwen and Loewner-Nirenberg …
A partial solution of the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the quaternionic sphere is given. It is shown that the torsion of the Biquard connection vanishes exactly when the trace-free part of the horizontal Ricci tensor of the Biquard connection is zero and this occurs precisely on 3-Sasakian manifolods. All conformal deformations sending the standard flat torsion-free quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group to a quaternionic contact structure with vanishing torsion of the Biquard connection are explicitly described. A '3-Hamiltonian form' of infinitesimal co…
In this paper we produce families of Riemannian metrics with positive constant $σ_k$-curvature equal to $2^{-k} {n \choose k}$ by performing the connected sum of two given compact {\em non degenerate} $n$--dimensional solutions $(M_1,g_1)$ and $(M_2,g_2)$ of the (positive) $σ_k$-Yamabe problem, provided $2 \leq 2k < n$. The problem is equivalent to solve a second order fully nonlinear elliptic equation.
