We discuss the structure of "exceptional generalised geometry" (EGG), an extension of Hitchin's generalised geometry that provides a unified geometrical description of backgrounds in eleven-dimensional supergravity. On a d-dimensional background, as first described by Hull, the action of the generalised geometrical O(d,d) symmetry group is replaced in EGG by the exceptional U-duality group E_d(d). The metric and form-field degrees of freedom combine into a single geometrical object, so that EGG naturally describes generic backgrounds with flux, and there is an EGG analogue of the Courant bracket which encodes the differential geometry. Our focus is on the case of seven-dimensional backgrounds with N=1 four-dimensional supersymmetry. The corresponding EGG is the generalisation of a G_2-structure manifold. We show it is characterised by an element ϕin a particular orbit of the 912 representation of E_7(7), which defines an SU(7) (subset of E_7(7)) structure. As an application, we derive the generic form of the four-dimensional effective superpotential, and show that it can be written in a universal form, as a homogeneous E_7(7)-invariant functional of ϕ.
The main topic of this thesis are flux compactifications. Firstly, we study dimensional reductions of type II and eleven-dimensional supergravities using exceptional generalised geometry. We start by presenting the needed mathematical tools, focusing on G-structures and their extension to generalised geometry. Then, we move our focus on compactifications. In particular, we mainly focus on type IIA, building the version of exceptional generalised geometry adapted to such supergravity and finding the right deformations of generalised Lie derivative to accomodate the Romans mass. We describe the …
We briefly review the description of the internal sector of supergravity theories in the language of generalised geometry and how this gives rise to a description of supersymmetric backgrounds as integrable geometric structures. We then review recent work, featuring holomorphic Courant algebroids, on the description of $\mathcal N=1$ heterotic flux vacua. This work studied the finite deformation problem of the Hull-Strominger system, guided by consideration of the superpotential functional on the relevant space of geometries. It rewrote the system in terms of the Maurer-Cartan set of a particu…
We consider interesting Seiberg dualities for $Usp$ gauge theories with an antisymmetric, $8$ fundamentals and no superpotential. We reduce to three dimensions and systematically analyze deformations triggered by real and complex masses, reaching a plethora of $\mathcal{N}\!=\!2$ dualities for $U(N)$ and $Usp(2N)$ gauge theories, possibly with monopole superpotentials and Chern-Simons interactions. Special cases of these "exceptional dualities" are: supersymmetry enhancement dualities, "duality appetizers" and many known dualities relating rank-$1$ gauge groups. The $4d$ $\mathcal{N}\!=\!1$ $U…
We introduce the notion of G-algebroid, generalising both Lie and Courant algebroids, as well as the algebroids used in $E_{n(n)}\times\mathbb{R}^+$ exceptional generalised geometry for $n\in\{3,\dots,6\}$. Focusing on the exceptional case, we prove a classification of "exact" algebroids and translate the related classification of Leibniz parallelisable spaces into a tractable algebraic problem. After discussing the general notion of Poisson-Lie duality, we show that the Poisson-Lie U-duality is compatible with the equations of motion of supergravity.
We study generalised calibrations described by Exceptional Sasaki-Einstein structures on AdS backgrounds in type IIB and M-theory, placing the focus on the generalised Reeb vectors. The inequalities for the energy bound are derived by decomposing a $κ$-symmetry condition and equivalently, bispinors in calibration conditions from existing literature. We explain how the closure of the calibration forms is related to the integrability conditions of the Exceptional Sasaki-Einstein structure, in particular for AdS space-filling or point-like branes. Doing so, we show that the form parts of the twis…
We develop an exceptional generalised geometry formalism for massive type IIA supergravity. In particular, we construct a deformation of the generalised Lie derivative, which generates the type IIA gauge transformations as modified by the Romans mass. We apply this new framework to consistent Kaluza-Klein reductions preserving maximal supersymmetry. We find a generalised parallelisation of the exceptional tangent bundle on S^6, and from this reproduce the consistent truncation ansatz and embedding tensor leading to dyonically gauged ISO(7) supergravity in four dimensions. We also discuss close…
In this paper we define the analogue of Calabi--Yau geometry for generic $D=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ flux backgrounds in type II supergravity and M-theory. We show that solutions of the Killing spinor equations are in one-to-one correspondence with integrable, globally defined structures in $E_{7(7)}\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry. Such "exceptional Calabi--Yau" geometries are determined by two generalised objects that parametrise hyper- and vector-multiplet degrees of freedom and generalise conventional complex, symplectic and hyper-Kahler geometries. The integrability conditions for both…
We analyse generic AdS flux backgrounds preserving eight supercharges in $D=4$ and $D=5$ dimensions using exceptional generalised geometry. We show that they are described by a pair of globally defined, generalised structures, identical to those that appear for flat flux backgrounds but with different integrability conditions. We give a number of explicit examples of such "exceptional Sasaki-Einstein" backgrounds in type IIB supergravity and M-theory. In particular, we give the complete analysis of the generic AdS$_5$ M-theory backgrounds. We also briefly discuss the structure of the moduli sp…
We reinterpret the generalised Lie derivative of M-theory $E_6$ generalised geometry as hamiltonian flow on a graded symplectic supermanifold. The hamiltonian acts as the nilpotent derivative of the tensor hierarchy of exceptional field theory. This construction is an M-theory analogue of the Courant algebroid and reveals the $L_\infty$-algebra underlying the tensor hierarchy. The AKSZ construction identifies that same hamiltonian with the lagrangian of a 7-dimensional generalisation of Chern-Simons theory that reduces to the M5-brane Wess-Zumino term on 5-brane boundaries. The exercise repeat…
In this work we revisit the $E_8\times\mathbb{R}^{+}$ generalised Lie derivative encoding the algebra of diffeomorphisms and gauge transformations of compactifications of M-theory on eight-dimensional manifolds, by extending certain features of the $E_7\times\mathbb{R}^{+}$ one. Compared to its $E_d\times\mathbb{R}^{+},\ d\le 7$ counterparts, a new term is needed for consistency. However, we find that no compensating parameters need to be introduced, but rather that the new term can be written in terms of the ordinary generalised gauge parameters by means of a connection. This implies that no …
In this paper we establish and clarify the link between the recently found E7 generalised geometric structures, which are based on the SU(8) invariant reformulation of D=11 supergravity proposed long ago, and newer results obtained in the framework of recent approaches to generalised geometry, where E7 duality is built in and manifest from the outset. In making this connection, the so-called generalised vielbein postulate plays a key role. We explicitly show how this postulate can be used to define an E7 valued affine connection and an associated covariant derivative, which yields a generalise…
We present a tensor calculus for exceptional generalised geometry. Expressions for connections, torsion and curvature are given a unified formulation for different exceptional groups E_n(n). We then consider "tensor gauge fields" coupled to the exceptional generalised gravity. Many of the properties of forms on manifolds are carried over to these fields.
We describe the geometry of generic heterotic backgrounds preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions using the language of generalised geometry. They are characterised by an $SU(3)\times Spin(6+n)$ structure within $O(6,6+n)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry. Supersymmetry of the background is encoded in the existence of an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent bundle and the vanishing of a moment map for the action of diffeomorphisms and gauge symmetries. We give both the superpotential and the Kähler potential for a generic background, showing that the latter defines…
We use the Konishi anomaly equations to construct the exact effective superpotential of the glueball superfields in various N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories. We use the superpotentials to study in detail the structure of the spaces of vacua of these theories. We consider chiral and non-chiral SU(N) models, the exceptional gauge group G(2) and models that break supersymmetry dynamically.
We examine non-gravitational minimal supermultiplets which are based on the tensor gauge fields appearing as matter fields in exceptional generalised geometry. When possible, off-shell multiplets are given. The fields in the multiplets describe non-gravitational parts of the internal dynamics of compactifications of M-theory. In flat backgrounds, they enjoy a global U-duality symmetry, but also provide multiplets with a possibility of coupling to a generalised exceptional geometry.
The Bianchi identities for bosonic fluxes in supergravity can receive higher derivative quantum and string corrections, the most well known being that of Heterotic theory $d H = \tfrac{1}{4}α'(\text{tr } F^2 - \text{tr } R^2)$. Less studied are the modifications at order $R^4$ that may arise, for example, in the Bianchi identity for the seven-form flux of M theory compactifications. We argue that such corrections appear to be incompatible with the exceptional generalised geometry description of the lower order supergravity, and seem to imply a gauge algebra for the bosonic potentials that cann…
We explore geometries that give rise to a novel algebraic structure, the Exceptional Drinfeld Algebra, which has recently been proposed as an approach to study generalised U-dualities, similar to the non-Abelian and Poisson-Lie generalisations of T-duality. This algebra is generically not a Lie algebra but a Leibniz algebra, and can be realised in exceptional generalised geometry or exceptional field theory through a set of frame fields giving a generalised parallelisation. We provide examples including "three-algebra geometries", which encode the structure constants for three-algebras and in …
We apply exceptional generalised geometry to the study of exactly marginal deformations of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs that are dual to generic AdS$_5$ flux backgrounds in type IIB or eleven-dimensional supergravity. In the gauge theory, marginal deformations are parametrised by the space of chiral primary operators of conformal dimension three, while exactly marginal deformations correspond to quotienting this space by the complexified global symmetry group. We show how the supergravity analysis gives a geometric interpretation of the gauge theory results. The marginal deformations arise from defor…
We study D-branes in the extended geometry appearing in exceptional field theory (or exceptional generalised geometry). Starting from the exceptional sigma model (an $E_{d(d)}$ covariant worldsheet action with extra target space coordinates), we define open string boundary conditions. We write down Neumann and Dirichlet projectors compatible with the preservation of half-maximal supersymmetry by the brane (building on previous work on the definition of generalised orientifold quotients in exceptional field theory). This leads to a definition of D-branes, plus their S-duals, as particular subsp…
The exceptional Drinfel'd algebra (EDA) is a Leibniz algebra introduced to provide an algebraic underpinning with which to explore generalised notions of U-duality in M-theory. In essence it provides an M-theoretic analogue of the way a Drinfel'd double encodes generalised T-dualities of strings. In this note we detail the construction of the EDA in the case where the regular U-duality group is $E_{6(6)}$. We show how the EDA can be realised geometrically as a generalised Leibniz parallelisation of the exceptional generalised tangent bundle for a six-dimensional group manifold $G$, endowed wit…
We examine exceptional field theory through the lens of the generalised double copy formalism. This allows us to construct classical solutions in M-theory using a generalised Kerr-Schild ansatz and along the way indicates hints towards a single copy of M-theory. Based on a talk at the Nankai Symposium given by DSB.
A classical $E_{d(d)}$-invariant Hamiltonian formulation of world-volume theories of half-BPS p-branes in type IIb and eleven-dimensional supergravity is proposed, extending known results to $d \leq 6$. It consists of a Hamiltonian, characterised by a generalised metric, and a current algebra constructed s.t. it reproduces the $E_{d(d)}$ generalised Lie derivative. $E_{d(d)}$-covariance necessitates the introduction of so-called charges, specifying the type of p-brane and the choice of section. For p>2, currents of p-branes are generically non-geometric due to the imposition of U-duality, e.g.…
We begin an investigation of supersymmetric theories based on exceptional groups. The flat directions are most easily parameterized using their correspondence with gauge invariant polynomials. Symmetries and holomorphy tightly constrain the superpotentials, but due to multiple gauge invariants other techniques are needed for their full determination. We give an explicit treatment of $G_2$ and find gaugino condensation for $N_f\leq 2$, and an instanton generated superpotential for $N_f=3$. The analogy with $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories continues with modified and unmodified quantum moduli spaces for…
We construct a Poisson algebra of brane currents from a QP-manifold (alias symplectic $L_\infty$-algebroid), and show their Poisson brackets take a universal geometric form. This generalises a result of Alekseev and Strobl on string currents and generalised geometry to include branes with worldvolume gauge fields, such as the D3 and M5. Our result yields a universal expression for the 't Hooft anomaly that afflicts isometries in the presence of fluxes. We determine the current algebra in terms of (exceptional) generalised geometry, and show that the tensor hierarchy gives rise to a brane curre…
We examine how generalised geometries can be associated with a labelled Dynkin diagram built around a gravity line. We present a series of new generalised geometries based on the groups $\mathit{Spin}(d,d)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ for which the generalised tangent space transforms in a spinor representation of the group. In low dimensions these all appear in subsectors of maximal supergravity theories. The case $d=8$ provides a geometry for eight-dimensional backgrounds of M theory with only seven-form flux, which have not been included in any previous geometric construction. This geometry is also o…
We construct Exceptional Field Theory for the group $SO(5,5)$ based on the extended (6+16)-dimensional spacetime, which after reduction gives the maximal $D=6$ supergravity. We present both a true action and a duality-invariant pseudo-action formulations. All the fields of the theory depend on the complete extended spacetime. The U-duality group $SO(5,5)$ is made a geometric symmetry of the theory by virtue of introducing the generalised Lie derivative that incorporates a local duality transformation. Tensor hierarchy appears as a natural consequence of the algebra of generalised Lie derivativ…
We find the Seiberg-Witten geometry for four dimensional N=2 supersymmetric E_6 gauge theories with massless fundamental hypermultiplets, by geometrically embedding them in type II string theories compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds. The resulting geometry completely agrees with that of recent works, which are based on the technique of N=1 confining phase superpotentials. We also derive the Seiberg-Witten geometry for E_7 gauge theories with massive fundamental hypermultiplets.
We show how to construct seven-dimensional half-maximally supersymmetric consistent truncations of 11-/10-dimensional SUGRA using $\mathrm{SL}(5)$ exceptional field theory. Such truncations are defined on generalised $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structure manifolds and give rise to seven-dimensional half-maximal gauged supergravities coupled to $n$ vector multiplets and thus with scalar coset space $\mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathrm{O}(3,n)/\mathrm{O}(3)\times\mathrm{O}(n)$. The consistency conditions for the truncation can be written in terms of the generalised Lie derivative and take a simple geometric form. …
We present a generalised geometry framework for systematically constructing consistent truncations of ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravity preserving varying fractions of supersymmetry. Truncations arise when there is a reduced structure group $G_S$ of the exceptional generalised geometry, such that the intrinsic torsion is a $G_S$-singlet. The matter content of the truncated theory follows from group-theoretical arguments, while the gauging is determined by the sub-algebra of generalised diffeomorphisms generated by the $G_S$-singlet vectors. After discussing the general ideas across diff…
We consider a non trivial solution to the section condition in the context of $\mathbb{R}^{+}\times E_{3(3)}$ exceptional field theory and show that allowing fields to depend on the additional stringy coordinates of the extended internal space permits to describe the monodromies of (p,q) 7-branes in the context of F-theory. General expressions of non trivial fluxes with associated linear and quadratic constraints are obtained via a comparison to the embedding tensor of eight dimensional gauged maximal supergravity with gauged trombone symmetry. We write an explicit generalised Christoffel symb…
This note discusses the connection between generalised geometry and flux compactifications of string theory. Firstly, we explain in a pedestrian manner how the supersymmetry constraints of type II ${\mathcal{N}}=1$ flux compactifications can be restated as integrability constraints on certain generalised complex structures. This reformulation uses generalised complex geometry, a mathematical framework that geometrizes the B-field. Secondly, we discuss how exceptional generalised geometry may provide a similar geometrization of the RR fields. Thirdly, we examine the connection between generalis…
We examine the flux structures defined by NS-NS superpotentials of Type IIA and Type IIB string theories compactified on a particular class of internal spaces which include non-geometric flux contributions due to T duality or mirror symmetry. This is then extended to the Type IIB R-R sector through the use of S duality and then finally to its mirror dual Type IIA R-R sector, with note of how this sector breaks S duality invariance in Type IIA. The nilpotency and tadpole constraints associated with the fluxes induced by both dualities are derived, explicitly demonstrated to be mirror invariant …
We construct generalised diffeomorphisms for E$_9$ exceptional field theory. The transformations, which like in the E$_8$ case contain constrained local transformations, close when acting on fields. This is the first example of a generalised diffeomorphism algebra based on an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra and an infinite-dimensional coordinate module. As a byproduct, we give a simple generic expression for the invariant tensors used in any extended geometry. We perform a generalised Scherk--Schwarz reduction and verify that our transformations reproduce the structure of gauged supergravity …
We present a detailed study of a new mathematical object in $\mathrm{E}_{6(6)}\times \mathbb{R}^{+}$ generalised geometry called an `exceptional complex structure' (ECS). It is the extension of a conventional complex structure to one that includes all the degrees of freedom of M-theory or type IIB supergravity in six or five dimensions, and as such characterises, in part, the geometry of generic supersymmetric compactifications to five-dimensional Minkowkski space. We define an ECS as an integrable $\mathrm{U}^{*}(6)\times \mathbb{R}^{+}$ structure and show it is equivalent to a particular for…
We study a solution generating technique in supergravity which can be viewed as a generalised version of U-duality, taking solutions of type IIA supergravity on a 6-sphere with RR flux to new solutions of 11-dimensional supergravity. The new solutions are characterised by an underlying 6-algebra structure. Our construction provides an 11-dimensional uplift of four-dimensional ISO(7) gauged supergravity, using $E_7$ exceptional geometry techniques. We focus on an example where we start with the D2 solution in type IIA supergravity and construct a new $\tfrac12$-BPS 11-dimensional solution.
Massless particles in $n+1$ dimensions lead to massive particles in $n$ dimensions on Kaluza-Klein reduction. In string theory, wrapped branes lead to multiplets of massive particles in $n$ dimensions, in representations of a duality group $G$. By encoding the masses of these particles in auxiliary worldline scalars, also transforming under $G$, we write an action which resembles that for a massless particle on an extended spacetime. We associate this extended spacetime with that appearing in double field theory and exceptional field theory, and formulate a version of the action which is invar…
We formulate the full bosonic SL(5) exceptional field theory in a coordinate-invariant manner. Thereby we interpret the 10-dimensional extended space as a manifold with $\mathrm{SL}(5)\times\mathbb{R}^+$-structure. We show that the algebra of generalised diffeomorphisms closes subject to a set of closure constraints which are reminiscent of the quadratic and linear constraints of maximal seven-dimensional gauged supergravities, as well as the section condition. We construct an action for the full bosonic SL(5) exceptional field theory, even when the $\mathrm{SL}(5)\times\mathbb{R}^+$-structure…
A superpotential algebra is square if its quiver admits an embedding into a two-torus such that the image of its underlying graph is a square grid, possibly with diagonal edges in the unit squares; examples are provided by dimer models in physics. Such an embedding reveals much of the algebras representation theory through a device we introduce called an impression. Let A be a square superpotential algebra, Z its center, and \mathfrak{m} the maximal ideal at the origin of Spec(Z). Using an impression, we give a classification of all simple A-modules up to isomorphism, and give algebraic and ho…
In this note we study exceptional algebroids, focusing on their relation to type IIB superstring theory. We show that a IIB-exact exceptional algebroid (corresponding to the group $E_{n(n)}\times \mathbb{R}^+$, for $n\le 6$) locally has a standard form given by the exceptional tangent bundle. We derive possible twists, given by a flat $\mathfrak{gl}(2,\mathbb{R})$-connection, a covariantly closed pair of 3-forms, and a 5-form, and comment on their physical interpretation. Using this analysis we reduce the search for Leibniz parallelisable spaces, and hence maximally supersymmetric consistent t…
The exceptional superalgebra $\D21a$ has been classified as a candidate conformal supersymmetry algera in two dimensions. We propose an alternative interpretation of it as an extended BFV-BRST quantisation superalgebra in 2D ($D(2,1;1) \simeq osp(2,2|2)$). A superfield realization is presented wherein the standard extended phase space coordinates can be identified. The physical states are studied via the cohomology of the BRST operator. Finally we reverse engineer a classical action corresponding to the algebraic model we have constructed, and identify the Lagrangian equations of motion.
We examine the challenge of viewing all the fields in supergravity as arising from a Kaluza-Klein like dimensional reduction of some higher-dimensional theory. This gives rise to what is known as exceptional field theory or double field theory. A particular emphasis is placed on following the Kaluza-Klein intuition leading to the identification of charged states and a reinterpretation of the central charges. We further give a description of the novel extended geometry as a generalised phase space and the relationship to string and M-theory theory and the notion of quantization
We construct the scalar potential for the exceptional field theory based on the affine symmetry group E$_9$. The fields appearing in this potential live formally on an infinite-dimensional extended spacetime and transform under E$_9$ generalised diffeomorphisms. In addition to the scalar fields expected from D=2 maximal supergravity, the invariance of the potential requires the introduction of new constrained scalar fields. Other essential ingredients in the construction include the Virasoro algebra and indecomposable representations of E$_9$. Upon solving the section constraint, the potential…
At the leading order, M-theory admits minimal supersymmetric compactifications if the internal manifold has exceptional holonomy. The inclusion of non-vanishing fluxes in M-theory and string theory compactifications induce a superpotential in the lower dimensional theory, which depends on the fluxes. In this work, we verify the conjectured form of this superpotential in the case of warped M-theory compactifications on Spin(7) holonomy manifolds. We calculate the most general causal N=1 three-dimensional, gauge invariant action coupled to matter in superspace and derive its component form using…
We study $D \geq 4$-dimensional half-maximal flux backgrounds using exceptional field theory. We define the relevant generalised structures and also find the integrability conditions which give warped half-maximal $\mathrm{Minkowski}_D$ and $\mathrm{AdS}_D$ vacua. We then show how to obtain consistent truncations of type II / 11-dimensional SUGRA which break half the supersymmetry. Such truncations can be defined on backgrounds admitting exceptional generalised $\mathrm{SO}(d-1-N)$ structures, where $d = 11 - D$, and $N$ is the number of vector multiplets obtained in the lower-dimensional theo…
Gaugino condensation is discussed in the context of a consistent new version of low energy heterotic M-theory. The four dimensional reduction of the theory is described, based on simple boson and fermion backgrounds. This is generalised to include gaugino condenstates and various background fluxes, some with non-trivial topology. It is found that condensate and quantised flux contributions to the four-dimensional superpotential contain no corrections due to the warping of the higher dimensional metric.
Using exceptional generalised geometry, we classify which five-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ gauged supergravities can arise as a consistent truncation of 10-/11-dimensional supergravity. Exceptional generalised geometry turns the classification into an algebraic problem of finding subgroups $G_S \subset \mathrm{USp}(8) \subset \mathrm{E}_{6(6)}$ that preserve exactly two spinors. Moreover, the intrinsic torsion of the $G_S$ structure must contain only constant singlets under $G_S$, and these, in turn, determine the gauging of the five-dimensional theory. The resulting five-dimensional theories are…
We continue the analysis of the geometry of generic Minkowski $\mathcal{N} = 1$, $D = 4$ flux compactifications in M-theory using exceptional generalised geometry, including the calculation of the infinitesimal moduli spaces. The backgrounds can be classified into two classes: type-0 and type-3. For type-0, we review how the moduli arise from standard de Rham cohomology classes. We also argue that, under reasonable assumptions, there are no appropriate sources to support compact flux backgrounds for this class and so the only solutions are in fact $G_2$ geometries. For type-3 backgrounds, give…
In considering the nature of the basic mathematical structures appropriate for describing the fundamental elements of particle physics a significant role for the octonions, as an extension from the complex numbers and uniquely the largest division algebra, has occasionally been proposed. Rather than being based initially upon the more abstract grounds of mathematical aesthetics, here we describe a unified theory motivated conceptually through an elementary generalisation of the expression for a local proper time interval, beyond that of 4-dimensional spacetime and also beyond that of the local…
Extended geometry provides a unified framework for double geometry, exceptional geometry, etc., i.e., for the geometrisations of the string theory and M-theory dualities. In this talk, we will explain the structure of gauge transformations (generalised diffeomorphisms) in these models. They are generically infinitely reducible, and arise as derived brackets from an underlying Borcherds superalgebra or tensor hierarchy algebra. The infinite reducibility gives rise to an $L_\infty$ structure, the brackets of which have universal expressions in terms of the underlying superalgebra.
