The influence of spin in a system of classical particles on the propagation of gravitational waves is analyzed in the cosmological context of primordial thermal equilibrium. On a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, when the precession is neglected, there is no contribution due to the spin to the distribution function of the particles. Adding a small tensor perturbation to the background metric, we study if a coupling between gravitational waves and spin exists that can modify the evolution of the distribution function, leading to new terms in the anisotropic stress, and then to a new source for gravitational waves. In the chosen gauge, the final result is that, in the absence of other kind of perturbations, there is no coupling between spin and gravitational waves.
We give a cosmological spinning multi-`black-hole' solution in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion theory with a positive cosmological constant. This solution is the cosmological dilatonic Israel-Wilson-Perjes solution and describes the collision of several spinning `black-holes'.
The relative motion of a classical relativistic spinning test particle is studied with respect to a nearby free test particle in the gravitational field of a rotating source. The effects of the spin-curvature coupling force are elucidated and the implications of the results for the motion of rotating plasma clumps in astrophysical jets are discussed.
We develop a first-order approximation method for the influence of spin on the motion of extended spinning test masses in a gravitational field. This approach is illustrated for approximately circular equatorial motion in the exterior Kerr spacetime. In this case, the analytic results for the first-order approximation are compared to the numerical integration of the exact system and the limitations of the first-order results are pointed out. Furthermore, we employ our analytic results to illustrate the gravitomagnetic clock effect for spinning particles.
We measure the gravitational recoil for unequal-mass-black- hole-binary mergers, with the larger BH having spin a/m^H=0.8, and the smaller BH non-spinning. We choose our configurations such that, initially, the spins lie on the orbital plane. The spin and orbital plane precess significantly, and we find that the out-of plane recoil (i.e. the recoil perpendicular to the orbital plane around merger) varies as η^2 / (1+q), in agreement with our previous prediction, based on the post-Newtonian scaling.
Binary systems of rapidly spinning compact objects, such as black holes or neutron stars, are prime targets for gravitational wave astronomers. The dynamics of these systems can be very complicated due to spin-orbit and spin-spin couplings. Contradictory results have been presented as to the nature of the dynamics. Here we confirm that the dynamics - as described by the second post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity - is chaotic, despite claims to the contrary. When dissipation due to higher order radiation reaction terms are included, the chaos is dampened. However, the inspiral-to…
The motion of a classical spinning test particle in the field of a weak plane gravitational wave is studied. It is found that the characteristic dimensions of the particle's orbit is sensitive to the ratio of the spin to the mass of the particle. The results are compared with the corresponding motion of a particle without spin.
The inspiral and merger of binary black holes will likely involve black holes with both unequal masses and arbitrary spins. The gravitational radiation emitted by these binaries will carry angular as well as linear momentum. A net flux of emitted linear momentum implies that the black hole produced by the merger will experience a recoil or kick. Previous studies have focused on the recoil velocity from unequal mass, non-spinning binaries. We present results from simulations of equal mass but spinning black hole binaries and show how a significant gravitational recoil can also be obtained in th…
The spontaneous loss of angular momentum of a spinning cosmic string due to particle emission is discussed. The rate of particle production between two assymptotic spacetimes: the spinning cosmic string spacetime in the infinite past and a non-spinning cosmic string spacetime in the infinite future is calculated.
The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations for a massive spinning test particle in plane gravitational waves are analysed and explicit solutions constructed in terms of solutions of certain linear ordinary differential equations. For harmonic waves this system reduces to a single equation of Mathieu-Hill type. In this case spinning particles may exhibit parametric excitation by gravitational fields. For a spinning test particle scattered by a gravitational wave pulse, the final energy-momentum of the particle may be related to the width, height, polarisation of the wave and spin orientation of t…
The dynamics of pseudo-classical spinning particles in spacetime of gravitational plane waves of general polarization and harmonic profile is studied. The resulting equations of motion are solved exactly and the results are compared with those of the other approaches. The relative accelerations of nearby particles is also calculated.
Inspiral signals from binary compact objects (black holes and neutron stars) are primary targets of the ongoing searches by ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers (LIGO, Virgo, GEO-600 and TAMA-300). We present parameter-estimation simulations for inspirals of black-hole--neutron-star binaries using Markov-chain Monte-Carlo methods. For the first time, we have both estimated the parameters of a binary inspiral source with a spinning component and determined the accuracy of the parameter estimation, for simulated observations with ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. We demonstra…
We study the effect of internal space rotation on the gravitational properties of infinite straight and stationary cosmic string. From the approximate solution of Einsten equations for the spinning Q-lump string we obtain long range gravitational accelleration resembling that of a rotating massive cylindrical shell. We also compute the angular velocity of the inertial frame dragging and the angle of light deflection by the Q-lump string. Matter accretion on to spinning strings can play a role in galaxy formation when the angular velocity times the string width is comparable to the speed of lig…
Within the framework of the minimum quadratic Poincare gauge theory of gravity in the Riemann-Cartan spacetime the dynamics of homogeneous anisotropic Bianchi types I-IX spinning-fluid cosmological models is investigated. A basic equation set for these models is obtained and analyzed. In particular, exact solutions for the Bianchi type-I spinning-fluid and Bianchi type-V perfect-fluid models are found in analytic form.
Propagation of light in the gravitational field of self-gravitating spinning bodies moving with arbitrary velocities is discussed. The gravitational field is assumed to be "weak" everywhere. Equations of motion of a light ray are solved in the first post-Minkowskian approximation that is linear with respect to the universal gravitational constant $G$. We do not restrict ourselves with the approximation of gravitational lens so that the solution of light geodesics is applicable for arbitrary locations of source of light and observer. This formalism is applied for studying corrections to the Sha…
Based on the coupling between the spin of a particle and gravitoelectromagnetic field, the equation of motion of a spinning test particle in gravitational field is deduced. From this equation of motion, it is found that the motion of a spinning particle deviates from the geodesic trajectory, and this deviation originates from the coupling between the spin of the particle and gravitoelectromagnetic field, which is also the origin of Lense-Thirring effects. In post-Newtonian approximations, this equation gives out the same results as those of Papapetrou equation. Effect of the deviation of geode…
The rotation of the bodies and the eccentricity of the orbit have significant effects on the emitted gravitational radiation of binary systems. This work focuses on the evaluation of the gravitational wave polarization states for spinning compact binaries. We consider binaries on eccentric orbits and the spin-orbit interaction up to the 1.5 post-Newtonian order in a way which is independent of the parameterization of the orbit. The equations of motion for angular variables are included. The formal expressions of the polarization states are given with the inclusion of higher order corrections t…
In this paper we study the dynamics of trajectory of a spinning particle in a Schwarzschild spacetime involving a global monopole. We set up the equations of motion and find three types of trajectories. We study the conditions that a spinning particle, originally moving in the innermost stable circular orbit around the black hole involving a global monopole, will escape to infinity after it is kicked by another particle or photon. Three types of trajectories of a spinning particle in a Schwarzschild spacetime involving a global monopole are simulated in detail and the escaping energy and veloc…
We compute gravitational self-force corrections to tidal invariants for spinning particles moving along circular orbits in a Schwarzschild spacetime. In particular, we consider the square and the cube of the gravitoelectric quadrupolar tidal tensor and the square of the gravitomagnetic quadrupolar tidal tensor. Our results are accurate to first-order in spin and through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order. We also compute the associated electric-type and magnetic-type eigenvalues.
In this comment, I argue that chaotic effects in binary black hole inspiral will not strongly impact the detection of gravitational waves from such systems.
We discuss the leading order correction to the equation of motion of a particle with spin on an arbitrary spacetime. A particle traveling in a curved spacetime is known to trace a geodesic of the background spacetime if the mass of the particle is negligibly small. For a spinning particle, it is known that there appears a term due to the coupling of the spin and the Riemann tensor of the background spacetime. Recently we have found the equation of motion of a non-spinning particle which includes the effect of gravitational radiation reaction. This paper is devoted to discussion of a consistent…
Using the Teukolsky and Sasaki-Nakamura formalisms for the perterbations around a Kerr black hole, we calculate the energy flux of gravitational waves induced by a {\it spinning} particle of mass $μ$ and spin $S$ moving in circular orbits near the equatorial plain of a rotating black hole of mass $M (\gg μ)$ and spin $Ma$. The calculations are performed by using the recently developed post-Newtonian expansion technique of the Teukolsky equation. To evaluate the source terms of perturbations caused by a {\it spinning} particle, we used the equations of motion of a spinning particle derived by P…
Spin-orbit and spin-spin effects in the gravitational interaction are treated in a close analogy with the fine and hyperfine interactions in atoms. The proper definition of the cener-of-mass coordinate is discussed. The technique developed is applied then to the gravitational radiation of compact binary stars. Our result for the spin-orbit correction differs from that obtained by other authors. New effects possible for the motion of a spinning particle in a gravitational field are pointed out. The corresponding corrections, nonlinear in spin, are in principle of the same order of magnitude as …
Spherically symmetric black holes produce, by strong field lensing, two infinite series of relativistic images, formed by light rays winding around the black hole at distances comparable to the gravitational radius. In this paper, we address the relevance of the black hole spin for the strong field lensing phenomenology, focusing on trajectories close to the equatorial plane for simplicity. In this approximation, we derive a two-dimensional lens equation and formulae for the position and the magnification of the relativistic images in the strong field limit. The most outstanding effect is the …
A four-dimensional asymptotic expansion scheme is used to study the next order effects of the nonlinearity near a spinning dynamical black hole. The angular momentum flux and energy flux formula are then obtained by asymptotic expansion and the compatibility of the coupling Newman-Penrose equations. After constructing the reference frame in terms of the compatible constant spinors, the energy-momentum flux is derived and it is related to the black hole area growth. Directly from the flux formula of the spinning dynamical horizon, we find that the physically reasonable condition on the positivi…
The equations which determine the response of a spinning charged particle moving in a uniform magnetic field to an incident gravitational wave are derived in the linearized approximation to general relativity. We verify that 1) the components of the 4-momentum, 4-velocity and the components of the spinning tensor, both electric and magnetic moments, exhibit resonances and 2) the co-existence of the uniform magnetic field and the GW are responsible for the resonances appearing in our equations. In the absence of the GW, the magnetic field and the components of the spin tensor decouple and the m…
The Ricci Rotation Coefficients in the description of trajectories of spinning test particles off-equatorial planes in a rotational gravitational field
We use the frequency and time domain Teukolsky formalism to calculate gravitational-wave fluxes from a spinning body on a bound eccentric equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole. The spinning body is represented as a point particle following the pole-dipole approximation of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations. Reformulating these equations we are not only able to find the trajectory of a spinning particle in terms of its constants of motion, but also to provide a method to calculate the azimuthal and the radial frequency of this trajectory. Using these orbital quantities, we introduce t…
Relativistic non-Abelian spinning fluids can be formulated in group theory language, where the corresponding Mathisson-Papapetrou equation for spinning fluids can be obtained in terms of a specific de Sitter group contraction. This framework is very suitable for studying the effects of a spinning fluid of matter with vorticity and a spin density in a cosmological background.
The gravitational and electromagnetic fields of a moving charged spinning point particle are obtained in the Lorentz covariant form by transforming the Kerr--Newman solution in Boyer--Lindquist coordinates to the one in the coordinate system which resembles the isotropic coordinates and then covariantizing it. It is shown that the general relativistic proper time at the location of the particle is the same as the special relativistic one and the gravitational and electromagnetic self forces vanish.
We determine the binding energy, the total gravitational wave energy flux, and the gravitational wave modes for a binary of rapidly spinning black holes, working in linearized gravity and at leading orders in the orbital velocity, but to all orders in the black holes' spins. Though the spins are treated nonperturbatively, surprisingly, the binding energy and the flux are given by simple analytical expressions which are finite (respectively third- and fifth-order) polynomials in the spins. Our final results are restricted to the important case of quasi-circular orbits with the black holes' spin…
We develop the analytic and numerical tools for data analysis of the gravitational-wave signals from spinning neutron stars for ground-based laser interferometric detectors. We study in detail the statistical properties of the optimum functional that need to be calculated in order to detect the gravitational-wave signal from a spinning neutron star and estimate its parameters. We derive formulae for false alarm and detection probabilities both for the optimal and the suboptimal filters. We assess the computational requirements needed to do the signal search. We compare a number of criteria to …
Gravitational waveforms from the inspiral and ring-down stages of the binary black hole coalescences can be modelled accurately by approximation/perturbation techniques in general relativity. Recent progress in numerical relativity has enabled us to model also the non-perturbative merger phase of the binary black-hole coalescence problem. This enables us to \emph{coherently} search for all three stages of the coalescence of non-spinning binary black holes using a single template bank. Taking our motivation from these results, we propose a family of template waveforms which can model the inspir…
The effects of non-Riemannian structures in Cosmology have been studied long ago and are still a relevant subject of investigation. In the seventies, it was discovered that singularity avoidance and early accelerated expansion can be induced by torsion in the Einstein-Cartan theory. In this framework, torsion is not dynamical and is completely expressed by means of the spin sources. Thus, in order to study the effects of torsion in the Einstein-Cartan theory, one has to introduce matter with spin. In principle, this can be done in several ways. In this work we consider the cosmological evoluti…
This work provides gravitational wave energy and angular momentum asymptotic fluxes from a spinning body moving on generic orbits in a Kerr spacetime up to linear in spin approximation. To achieve this, we have developed a new frequency domain Teukolsky equation solver that calculates asymptotic amplitudes from generic orbits of spinning bodies with their spin aligned with the total orbital angular momentum. However, the energy and angular momentum fluxes from these orbits in the linear in spin approximation are appropriate for adiabatic models of extreme mass ratio inspirals even for spins no…
The Sun's relativistic gravitational gradient accelerations of Earth and Moon, dependent on the motions of the latter bodies, act upon the system's internal angular momentum. This spin-orbit force (which plays a part in determining the gravity wave signal templates for astrophysical sources) slightly accelerates the Earth-Moon system as a whole, but it more robustly perturbs that system's internal dynamics with a 5 cm, synodically oscillating range contribution which is presently measured to 4 mm precision by more than three decades of lunar laser ranging.
The assumption of asymptotic flatness for isolated astrophysical bodies may be considered an approximation when one considers a cosmological context where a cosmological constant or vacuum energy is present. In this framework we study the motion of spinning particles in static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically non-flat spacetimes with repulsive cosmological vacuum energy and quintessential field. Due to the combined effects of gravitational attraction and cosmological repulsion, the region where stable circular orbits are allowed is restricted by an innermost and an outermost stable ci…
In this paper, we explore the source of gravitational radiation in the context of $f(R)$ gravity by considering axially symmetric dissipative dust under geodesic condition. We evaluate scalars associated with electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor for both non-spinning (at the center) and spinning (in the surrounding of the center) fluids of the configuration. For this purpose, we use the evolution as well as constraint equations for kinematical quantities and Weyl tensor. Finally, we investigate the existence of gravitational radiation through super-Poynting vector. It is found that t…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations are used for investigations of influence of the spin-gravity coupling on a highly relativistic spinning particle in Schwarzschild's field. It is established that interaction of the particle spin with the gravitomagnetic components of the field, estimated in the proper frame of the particle, causes the large acceleration of the spinning particle relative to geodesic free fall. As a result the accelerated charged spinning particle can generate intensive electromagnetic radiation when its velocity is highly relativistic. The significant contribution of the highl…
We discuss the transverse force acting on the spinning cosmic string, moving in the background matter. It comes from the gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect and corresponds to the Iordanskii force acting on the vortex in superfluids, when the vortex moves with respect to the normal component of the liquid.
The detection of gravitational waves from Extreme mass Ratio Inspirals (EMRIs) by the future space-based gravitational-wave detectors demands the generation of accurate enough waveform templates. Since the spin of the smaller secondary body cannot be neglected for the detection and parameter estimation of EMRIs, we study its influence on the phase of the gravitational waves from EMRIs with spinning secondary. We focus on generic eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole. To model the spinning secondary object, we use the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations in the pole-dipole approx…
Rapidly spinning neutron stars with non-axisymmetric mass distributions are expected to generate quasi-monochromatic continuous gravitational waves. While many searches for unknown, isolated spinning neutron stars have been carried out, there have been no previous searches for unknown sources in binary systems. Since current search methods for unknown, isolated neutron stars are already computationally limited, expanding the parameter space searched to include binary systems is a formidable challenge. We present a new hierarchical binary search method called TwoSpect, which exploits the period…
Using approximate techniques we study the final moments of the collision of two (individually non-spinnning) black holes which inspiral into each other. The approximation is based on treating the whole space-time as a single distorted black hole. We obtain estimates for the radiated energy, angular momentum and waveforms for the gravitational waves produced in such a collision. The results can be of interest for analyzing the data that will be forthcoming from gravitational wave interferometric detectors, like the LIGO, GEO, LISA, VIRGO and TAMA projects.
Based on the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations and the Vaidya metric, the motion of a spinning point particle orbiting a non-rotating star while undergoing radiation-induced gravitational collapse is studied in detail. A comprehensive analysis of the orbital dynamics is performed assuming distinct central mass functions which satisfy the weak energy condition, in order to determine a correspondence between the choice of mass function and the spinning particle's orbital response, as reflected in the gravitational waves emitted by the particle. The analysis presented here is likely most…
Compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits are plausible gravitational wave (GW) sources for the upcoming and planned GW observatories. We develop an efficient prescription to compute post-Newtonian (PN) accurate ready-to-use GW polarization states for spinning compact binaries, influenced by the dominant order spin-orbit interactions, in hyperbolic orbits. This is achieved by invoking the 1.5PN accurate quasi-Keplerian parameterization for the radial sector of the orbital dynamics. We probe the influences of spins and gravitational radiation reaction on $h_+$ and $h_{\times}$ during the hyperbolic…
A spinning test particle around a Schwarzschild black hole shows a chaotic behavior, if its spin is larger than a critical value. We discuss whether or not some peculiar signature of chaos appears in the gravitational waves emitted from such a system. Calculating the emitted gravitational waves by use of the quadrupole formula, we find that the energy emission rate of gravitational waves for a chaotic orbit is about 10 times larger than that for a circular orbit, but the same enhancement is also obtained by a regular "elliptic" orbit. A chaotic motion is not always enhance the energy emission …
If there exist higher-spin particles during inflation which are light compared to the Hubble rate, they may leave distinct statistical anisotropic imprints on the correlators involving scalar and graviton fluctuations. We characterise such signatures using the dS/CFT$_3$ correspondence and the operator product expansion techniques. In particular, we obtain generic results for the case of partially massless higher-spin states.
The effect of gravitational radiation reaction on circular orbits around a spinning (Kerr) black hole is computed to leading order in $S$ (the magnitude of the spin angular momentum of the hole) and in the strength of gravity $M/r$ (where $M$ is the mass of the black hole, $r$ is the orbital radius, and $G=c=1$). The radiation reaction makes the orbit shrink but leaves it circular, and drives the orbital plane very slowly toward antialignment with the spin of the hole: $\tan (ι/2) = \tan (ι_0 /2) [1+(61/72)(S/M^2) (M/r)^{3/2}]$, where $ι$ is the angle between the normal to the orbital plane an…
We establish a correspondence between perturbative classical gluon and gravitational radiation emitted by spinning sources, to linear order in spin. This is an extension of the non-spinning classical perturbative double copy and uses the same color-to-kinematic replacements. The gravitational theory has a scalar (dilaton) and a 2-form field (the Kalb-Ramon axion) in addition to the graviton. In arXiv:1712.09250, we computed axion radiation in the gravitational theory to show that the correspondence fixes its action. Here, we present complete details of the gravitational computation. In particu…
After considering the reference case of the motion of spinning test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild space-time, we generalize the results to the case of the motion of a spinning particle in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time. Specifically, we obtain the loci of turning points of the particle in this plane. We show that the cosmological constant affect the particle motion when the particle distance from the black hole is of the order of the inverse square root of the cosmological constant.
We study the gravitational field of a spinning radiation beam-pulse in a higher dimensional spacetime. We derive first the stress-energy tensor for such a beam in a flat spacetime and find the gravitational field generated by it in the linear approximation. We demonstrate that this gravitational field can also be obtained by boosting the Lense-Thirring metric in the limit when the velocity of the boosted source is close to the velocity of light. We then find an exact solution of the Einstein equations describing the gravitational field of a polarized radiation beam-pulse in a space-time with a…
We study gravitational waves from a spinning test particle scattered by a relativistic star using a perturbation method. The present analysis is restricted to axial modes. By calculating the energy spectrum, the waveforms and the total energy and angular momentum of gravitational waves, we analyze the dependence of the emitted gravitational waves on a particle spin. For a normal neutron star, the energy spectrum has one broad peak whose characteristic frequency corresponds to the angular velocity at the turning point (a periastron). Since the turning point is determined by the orbital paramete…
We derive spin-orbit coupling effects on the gravitational field and equations of motion of compact binaries in the 2.5 post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity, one PN order beyond where spin effects first appear. Our method is based on that of Blanchet, Faye, and Ponsot, who use a post-Newtonian metric valid for general (continuous) fluids and represent pointlike compact objects with a delta-function stress-energy tensor, regularizing divergent terms by taking the Hadamard finite part. To obtain post-Newtonian spin effects, we use a different delta-function stress-energy tensor int…
Twisted gravitational waves (TGWs) are nonplanar waves with twisted rays that move along a fixed direction in space. We study further the physical characteristics of a recent class of Ricci-flat solutions of general relativity representing TGWs with wave fronts that have negative Gaussian curvature. In particular, we investigate the influence of TGWs on the polarization of test electromagnetic waves and on the motion of classical spinning test particles in such radiation fields. To distinguish the polarization effects of twisted waves from plane waves, we examine the theoretical possibility of…
As is well known, gravitational wave detections of coalescing binaries are standard sirens, allowing a measurement of source distance by gravitational wave means alone. In this paper we explore the analogue of this capability for continuous gravitational wave emission from individual spinning neutron stars, whose spin-down is driven purely by gravitational wave emission. We show that in this case, the distance measurement is always degenerate with one other parameter, which can be taken to be the moment of inertia of the star. We quantify the accuracy to which such degenerate measurements can …
In this thesis we consider the data analysis problem of detecting gravitational waves emitted by inspiraling binary systems. Detection of gravitational waves will open a new window on the Universe enabling direct detection of systems such as binary black holes for the first time. In the first Chapter we show how gravitational waves are derived from Einstein's General theory of Relativity and discuss the emission of gravitational waves from inspiraling binaries and how this radiation may be detected using laser interferometers. Around two thirds of stars inhabit binary systems. As they orbit ea…
We present an analytical waveform family describing gravitational waves (GWs) from the inspiral, merger and ringdown of non-spinning black-hole binaries including the effect of several non-quadrupole modes [($\ell = 2, m = \pm 1), (\ell = 3, m = \pm 3), (\ell = 4, m = \pm 4)$ apart from $(\ell = 2, m=\pm2)$]. We first construct spin-weighted spherical harmonics modes of hybrid waveforms by matching numerical-relativity simulations (with mass ratio $1-10$) describing the late inspiral, merger and ringdown of the binary with post-Newtonian/effective-one-body waveforms describing the early inspir…
