We establish a correspondence between perturbative classical gluon and gravitational radiation emitted by spinning sources, to linear order in spin. This is an extension of the non-spinning classical perturbative double copy and uses the same color-to-kinematic replacements. The gravitational theory has a scalar (dilaton) and a 2-form field (the Kalb-Ramon axion) in addition to the graviton. In arXiv:1712.09250, we computed axion radiation in the gravitational theory to show that the correspondence fixes its action. Here, we present complete details of the gravitational computation. In particular, we also calculate the graviton and dilaton amplitudes in this theory and find that they precisely match with the predictions of the double copy. This constitutes a non-trivial check of the classical double copy correspondence, and brings us closer to the goal of simplifying the calculation of gravitational wave observables for astrophysically relevant sources.
We extend the perturbative double copy between radiating classical sources in gauge theory and gravity to the case of spinning particles. We construct, to linear order in spins, perturbative radiating solutions to the classical Yang-Mills equations sourced by a set of interacting color charges with chromomagnetic dipole spin couplings. Using a color-to-kinematics replacement rule proposed earlier by one of the authors, these solutions map onto radiation in a theory of interacting particles coupled to massless fields that include the graviton, a scalar (dilaton) $ϕ$ and the Kalb-Ramond axion fi…
We explore various tree-level double copy constructions for amplitudes including massive particles with spin. By working in general dimensions, we use that particles with spins $s\leq 2$ are fundamental to argue that the corresponding double copy relations partially follow from compactification of their massless counterparts. This massless origin fixes the coupling of gluons, dilatons and axions to matter in a characteristic way (for instance fixing the gyromagnetic ratio), whereas the graviton couples universally reflecting the equivalence principle. For spin-1 matter we conjecture all-order …
We find double copy relations between classical radiating solutions in Yang-Mills theory coupled to dynamical color charges and their counterparts in a cubic bi-adjoint scalar field theory which interacts linearly with particles carrying bi-adjoint charge. The particular color-to-kinematics replacements we employ are motivated by the BCJ double copy correspondence for on-shell amplitudes in gauge and gravity theories. They are identical to those recently used to establish relations between classical radiating solutions in gauge theory and in dilaton gravity. Our explicit bi-adjoint solutions a…
We construct perturbative classical solutions of the Yang-Mills equations coupled to dynamical point particles carrying color charge. By applying a set of color to kinematics replacement rules first introduced by Bern, Carrasco and Johansson (BCJ), these are shown to generate solutions of d-dimensional dilaton gravity, which we also explicitly construct. Agreement between the gravity result and the gauge theory double copy implies a correspondence between non-Abelian particles and gravitating sources with dilaton charge. When the color sources are highly relativistic, dilaton exchange decouple…
We extend the perturbative classical double copy to the analysis of bound systems. We first obtain the leading order perturbative gluon radiation field sourced by a system of interacting color charges in arbitrary time dependent orbits, and test its validity by taking relativistic bremsstrahlung and non-relativistic bound state limits. By generalizing the color to kinematic replacement rules recently used in the context of classical bremsstrahlung, we map the gluon emission amplitude to the radiation fields of dilaton gravity sourced by interacting particles in generic (self-consistent) orbits…
We study the gravitational field of a spinning radiation beam-pulse in a higher dimensional spacetime. We derive first the stress-energy tensor for such a beam in a flat spacetime and find the gravitational field generated by it in the linear approximation. We demonstrate that this gravitational field can also be obtained by boosting the Lense-Thirring metric in the limit when the velocity of the boosted source is close to the velocity of light. We then find an exact solution of the Einstein equations describing the gravitational field of a polarized radiation beam-pulse in a space-time with a…
We extend Shen's recent formulation (arXiv:1806.07388) of the classical double copy, based on explicit color-kinematic duality, to the case of finite-size sources with non-zero spin. For the case of spinning Yang-Mills sources, the most general consistent double copy consists of gravitating objects which carry pairs of spin degrees of freedom. We find that the couplings of such objects to background fields match those of a classical (i.e. heavy) closed bosonic string, suggesting a string theory interpretation of sources related by color-kinematics duality. As a special case, we identify a limi…
We examine Hawking radiation for a (2+1)-dimensional spinning black hole and study the interesting possibility of tunneling through the event horizon which acts as a classically forbidden barrier. Our finding shows it to be much lower than its nonrotating counterpart. We further explore the associated thermodynamics in terms of Hawking temperature and give estimates of black hole parameters like the surface gravity and entropy.
We compute the leading Post-Newtonian (PN) contributions at linear order in the spin to the radiation-reaction acceleration and spin evolution for binary systems, which enter at fourth PN order. The calculation is carried out, from first principles, using the effective field theory framework for spinning compact objects, in both the Newton-Wigner and covariant spin supplementary conditions. A non-trivial consistency check is performed on our results by showing that the energy loss induced by the resulting radiation-reaction force is equivalent to the total emitted power in the far zone, up to …
Lienard-Wiechert potentials of the relativistic spinning particle with anomalous magnetic moment in pseudoclassical theory are constructed. General expressions for the Lienard-Wiechert potentials are used for investigation of some specific cases of the motion of the spinning particle. In particular the spin dependence of the intensity of the synchrotron radiation of the transversely polarized particle performing uniform circular motion is considered. When the movement of the particle in external homogeneous magnetic field the obtained formulae coincide with those known from quantum theory of r…
The effect of radiation polarization attended with the motion of spinning charge in the magnetic field could be viewed through the classical theory of self-interaction. The quantum expression for the polarization time follows from the semiclassical relation $T_{QED}\sim \hbar c^{3}/μ_{B}^2ω_{c}^3$, and needs quantum explanation neither for the orbit nor for the spin motion. In our approach the polarization emerges as a result of natural selection in the ensenmble of elastically scattered electrons among which the group of particles that bear their spins in the 'right' directions has the smalle…
We compute the leading Post-Newtonian (PN) contributions at quadratic order in the spins to the radiation-reaction acceleration and spin evolution for binary systems, entering at four-and-a-half PN order. Our calculation includes the back-reaction from finite-size spin effects, which is presented for the first time. The computation is carried out, from first principles, using the effective field theory framework for spinning extended objects. At this order, nonconservative effects in the spin-spin sector are independent of the spin supplementary conditions. A non-trivial consistency check is p…
Considering gravitational and gauge anomalies at the horizon, a new successful method that to derive Hawking radiations from black holes has been developed recently by Wilczek et al.. By using the dimensional reduction technique, we apply this method to a non-vacuum solution, the 2+1 dimensional spinning black hole. The Hawking temperature and angular velocity on the horizon are obtained. The results may partially imply that this method is independent of the gravity theory, the dimension of spacetime and the topological structure of the event horizon.
Starting from the leading soft term of the 5-point amplitude, involving a graviton and two Kerr black holes, that factorises into the product of the elastic amplitude without the graviton and the leading soft factor, we compute the infrared divergent contribution to the imaginary part of the two-loop eikonal. Then, using analyticity and crossing symmetry, we determine the radiative contribution to the real part of the two-loop eikonal and from it the radiative part of the deflection angle for spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum, the loss of angular momentum and the zero frequency lim…
The double copy procedure relates gauge and gravity theories through color-kinematics replacements and holds for both scattering amplitudes and in classical contexts. Moreover, it has been shown that there is a web of theories whose scattering amplitudes are related through operations that exchange color and kinematic factors. In this paper, we generalize and extend this procedure by showing that the classical perturbative double copy of pions corresponds to special Galileons. We consider point-particles coupled to the relevant scalar fields, and find the leading and next to leading order radi…

Recently, a double-copy formalism was used to calculate gravitational radiation from classical Yang-Mills radiation solutions. This work shows that Yang-Mills theory coupled to a biadjoint scalar field admits a radiative double copy that agrees with solutions in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory at the lowest finite order. Within this context, the trace-reversed metric $\bar{h}^{μν}$ is a natural double copy of the gauge boson $A^{μa}$. This work provides additional evidence that solutions in gauge and gravity theories are related, even though their respective Lagrangians and nonlinear equations of m…
We introduce a covariant Multipole Expansion for the scattering of a massive particle emitting photons or gravitons in $D$ dimensions. We find that these amplitudes exhibit very powerful features such as universality, soft exponentiation, orbit and spin multipoles, etc. Using ${\rm{SO}}(D)$ representation theory we show that the photon and graviton amplitudes are related via a new double copy procedure for massive spinning states. All these features are then promoted to properties of the observables arising in the classical version of such theories. Focusing on radiation, we provide two main a…
The back-reaction effects for the spinning charge moving through the constant homogeneous electromagnetic field are studied in the context of the mass-shift (MS) method. For the g=2 magnetic moment case we find the (complex) addition to the classical action. Its dependence on the integrals of the unperturbed motion proves to be important in determination of the orbital radiation effects and could assist in understanding the radiation polarization (RP) phenomenon.
We consider radiation emitted by colour-charged and massive particles crossing strong plane wave backgrounds in gauge theory and gravity. These backgrounds are treated exactly and non-perturbatively throughout. We compute the back-reaction on these fields from the radiation emitted by the probe particles: classically through background-coupled worldline theories, and at tree-level in the quantum theory through three-point amplitudes. Consistency of these two methods is established explicitly. We show that the gauge theory and gravity amplitudes are related by the double copy for amplitudes on …
In this short note, we analyse low energy electromagnetic radiation for spinning particles using the KMOC formalism and the quantum soft theorems. In particular, we study low energy electromagnetic radiation emitted by the so-called $\sqrt{\text{Kerr}}$ object. The $\sqrt{\text{Kerr}}$ is a solution of the free Maxwell's equations with infinite multipole moments expressed solely in terms of the charge(Q), mass(m) and spin(S) of the classical object . We consider the scattering of two $\sqrt{\text{Kerr}}$ particles and using the KMOC formalism generalised to spinning particles, we perturbativel…

The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations are used for investigations of influence of the spin-gravity coupling on a highly relativistic spinning particle in Schwarzschild's field. It is established that interaction of the particle spin with the gravitomagnetic components of the field, estimated in the proper frame of the particle, causes the large acceleration of the spinning particle relative to geodesic free fall. As a result the accelerated charged spinning particle can generate intensive electromagnetic radiation when its velocity is highly relativistic. The significant contribution of the highl…
We find that scattering amplitudes in massive scalar QCD can manifest the duality between color and kinematics at loop-level. Specifically we construct the one-loop integrands for four-point scattering between two distinct massive scalars, and the five-point process encoding the first correction to massive scalar scattering with gluonic radiation. We find that factorization and the color-kinematics duality are sufficient principles to entirely bootstrap these calculations, allowing us to construct all contributions ultimately from the three-point tree-level amplitudes which are themselves enti…
The Minkowski background intrinsic to the Kerr-Schild version of the Kerr metric provides a definition of a boosted spinning black hole. There are two Kerr-Schild versions corresponding to ingoing or outgoing principal null directions. The two corresponding Minkowski backgrounds and their associated boosts differ drastically. This has an important implication for the gravitational memory effect. A prior analysis of the transition of a non-spinning Schwarzschild black hole to a boosted state showed that the memory effect in the nonlinear regime agrees with the linearised result based upon the r…
We derive the classical gravitational radiation from an aligned spin binary black hole on \textit{closed} orbits, using a dictionary built from the 5-point QFT scattering amplitude of two massive particles exchanging and emitting a graviton. We show explicitly the agreement of the transverse-traceless components of the radiative linear metric perturbations -- and the corresponding gravitational wave energy flux -- at future null infinity, derived from the scattering amplitude and those derived utilizing an effective worldline action in conjunction with multipolar post-Minkowskian matching. At …
The recently developed worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) formalism for the classical gravitational scattering of massive bodies is extended to massive, charged point particles coupling to bi-adjoint scalar field theory, Yang-Mills theory, and dilaton-gravity. We establish a classical double copy relation in these WQFTs for classical observables (deflection, radiation). The bi-adjoint scalar field theory fixes the locality structure of the double copy from Yang-Mills to dilaton-gravity. Using this the eikonal scattering phase (or free energy of the WQFT) is computed to next-to-leading order…
Advances in our understanding of perturbation theory suggest the existence of a correspondence between classical general relativity and Yang-Mills theory. A concrete example of this correspondence, which is known as the double copy, was recently introduced for the case of stationary Kerr-Schild spacetimes. Building on this foundation, we examine the simple time-dependent case of an accelerating, radiating point source. The gravitational solution, which generalises the Schwarzschild solution, includes a non-trivial stress-energy tensor. This stress-energy tensor corresponds to a gauge theoretic…
We apply the classical double copy to the calculation of self-energy of composite systems with multipolar coupling to gravitational field, obtaining next-to-leading order results in the gravitational coupling $G_N$ by generalizing color to kinematics replacement rules known in literature. When applied to the multipolar description of the two-body system, the self-energy diagrams studied in this work correspond to tail processes, whose physical interpretation is of radiation being emitted by the non-relativistic source, scattered by the curvature generated by the binary system and then re-absor…
Classical double copy is an intriguing relationship between classical solutions to a gravity theory and solutions to classical Yang-Mills equations. Although formally inspired by the double copy relation between (quantum) scattering amplitudes in QCD and perturbative gravity, a direct proof of the former from the latter continues to be under investigation. In this paper, we attempt to prove classical double copy from the color-kinematics duality symmetry of QCD amplitudes in a restricted setting. That is we consider radiative solutions with classical scattering sources in Yang-Mills theory and…
We propose classical equations of motion for a charged particle with magnetic moment, taking radiation reaction into account. This generalizes the Landau-Lifshitz equations for the spinless case. In the special case of spin-polarized motion in a constant magnetic field (synchrotron motion) we verify that the particle does lose energy. Previous proposals did not predict dissipation of energy and also suffered from runaway solutions analogous to those of the Lorentz-Dirac equations of motion.
We perturbatively calculate classical radiation in Yang-Mills theory and dilaton gravity, to next-to-leading order in couplings. The radiation is sourced by the scattering of two relativistic massive scalar sources with the dynamical effect taken into account, corresponding to the post-Minkowskian regime in gravity. We show how to arrange the Yang-Mills radiation such that the duality between colors and kinematics is manifest, including the three-term Jacobi identity. The search for duality-satisfying expressions exploits an auxiliary bi-adjoint scalar theory as a guide for locality. The doubl…
We give two double copy prescriptions which construct asymptotically flat solutions in gravity from asymptotically flat gauge fields. The first prescription applies to radiative fields, which are non-linear vacuum solutions determined by characteristic data at null infinity. For any two such radiative gauge fields (linear or non-linear), the characteristic data of a radiative metric, dilaton and axion is constructed by a simple `squaring' procedure, giving a classical double copy at the level of radiation fields. We demonstrate the procedure with several examples where the characteristic data …
In the semiclassical approximation of Grassmann-valued electric charges for regularizing Coulomb self-energies, we extract the unique acceleration-independent interaction hidden in any Lienard-Wiechert solution for the system of N positive-energy spinning particles plus the electromagnetic field in the radiation gauge of the rest-frame instant form. With the help of a semiclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, this allows us to find the relativistic semiclassical Darwin potential. In the 2-body case the quantization of the lowest order reproduces exactly the results from the reduction of t…
We examine the Weyl double copy relation for vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant using the approach we previously described, in which the spin-1/2 massless free-field spinors (Dirac-Weyl fields) are regarded as basic units. Based on the exact non-twisting vacuum type N and vacuum type D solutions, the finding explicitly shows that the single and zeroth copies fulfill conformally invariant field equations in conformally flat spacetime. In addition, irrespective of the presence of a cosmological constant, we demonstrate that the zeroth copy connects Dirac-Weyl…
In this Letter, we study black hole area quantization in the context of gravitational wave physics. It was recently argued that black hole area quantization could be a mechanism to produce so-called echoes as well as characteristic absorption lines in gravitational wave observations of merging black holes. One can match the spontaneous decay of these quantum black holes to Hawking radiation calculations. Using some assumptions, one can then estimate the natural widths of these states. As can be seen from a classical paper by Bekenstein and Mukhanov, the ratio between width and spacing of nonsp…
