The assumption of asymptotic flatness for isolated astrophysical bodies may be considered an approximation when one considers a cosmological context where a cosmological constant or vacuum energy is present. In this framework we study the motion of spinning particles in static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically non-flat spacetimes with repulsive cosmological vacuum energy and quintessential field. Due to the combined effects of gravitational attraction and cosmological repulsion, the region where stable circular orbits are allowed is restricted by an innermost and an outermost stable circular orbits. We show that taking into account the spin of test particles may enlarge or shrink the region of allowed stable circular orbits depending on whether the spin is co-rotating or counter-rotating with the angular momentum of the particles.
We analyse the properties of a fluid generating a spinning cosmic string spacetime with flat limiting cases corresponding to a constant angular momentum in the infinite past and static configuration in the infinite future. The spontaneous loss of angular momentum of a spinning cosmic string due to particle emission is discussed. The rate of particle production between the spinning and non-spinning cosmic string spacetimes is calculated.
The spontaneous loss of angular momentum of a spinning cosmic string due to particle emission is discussed. The rate of particle production between two assymptotic spacetimes: the spinning cosmic string spacetime in the infinite past and a non-spinning cosmic string spacetime in the infinite future is calculated.
Boost-rotation symmetric vacuum spacetimes with spinning sources which correspond to gravitational field of uniformly accelerated spinning "particles" are studied. Regularity conditions and asymptotic properties are analyzed. News functions are derived by transforming the general spinning boost-rotation symmetric vacuum metric to Bondi-Sachs coordinates.
By incorporating spinning particles into the framework of classical General Relativity, the theory is changed insofar, as, though using holonome coordinates, the connexion becomes asymmetrical. This implies, that partial derivatives do not commute any longer. Hence, the class of functions under consideration has to be extended. A non-minimal extension leads to the possibility of spacetime warps for spinning particles.
The dynamics of pseudo-classical spinning particles in spacetime of gravitational plane waves of general polarization and harmonic profile is studied. The resulting equations of motion are solved exactly and the results are compared with those of the other approaches. The relative accelerations of nearby particles is also calculated.
We present a method for constructing stationary, asymptotically flat, rotating solutions of Einstein's field equations. One of the spun-up solutions has quasilocal mass but no global mass. It has an ergosphere but no event horizon. The angular momentum is constant everywhere beyond the ergosphere. The energy-momentum content of this solution can be interpreted as a rotating string-fluid.
We present analytical solutions of the geodesic equations of test particles and light in the five dimensional singly spinning black ring spacetime for special cases, since it does not appear possible to separate the Hamilton-Jacobi-equation for singly spinning black rings in general. Based on the study of the polynomials in the equations of motion we characterize the motion of test particles and light and discuss the associated orbits.
We study axially symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations describing spinning gauged boson stars in a 3+1 dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetime. These smooth horizonless solutions possess an electric charge and a magnetic dipole moment, their angular momentum being proportional to the electric charge. A special class of solutions with a self-interacting scalar field, corresponding to static axially symmetric solitons with a nonzero magnetic dipole moment, is also investigated.
In this article we analyze the geodesics of test particles and light in the five dimensional (charged) doubly spinning black ring spacetime. Apparently it is not possible to separate the Hamilton-Jacobi-equation for (charged) doubly spinning black rings in general, so we concentrate on special cases: null geodesics in the ergosphere and geodesics on the two rotational axes of the (charged) doubly spinning black ring. We present analytical solutions to the geodesic equations for these special cases. Using effective potential techniques we study the motion of test particles and light and discuss…
We consider the orbits of particles with spin in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Using the Papapetrou-Dixon equations of motion for spinning particles, we solve for the orbits and focus on those that exhibit chaos using both Poincaré maps and Lyapunov exponents. In particular, we develop a method for comparing the Lyapunov exponents of chaotic orbits. We find chaotic orbits for smaller spin values than previously thought and with spins that could be realized astrophysically.
We compute gravitational self-force corrections to tidal invariants for spinning particles moving along circular orbits in a Schwarzschild spacetime. In particular, we consider the square and the cube of the gravitoelectric quadrupolar tidal tensor and the square of the gravitomagnetic quadrupolar tidal tensor. Our results are accurate to first-order in spin and through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order. We also compute the associated electric-type and magnetic-type eigenvalues.
The motion of spinning test particles along circular orbits in static vacuum spacetimes belonging to the Weyl class is discussed. Spin alignment and coupling with background parameters in the case of superimposed Weyl fields, corresponding to a single Schwarzschild black hole and single Chazy-Curzon particle as well as to two Schwarzschild black holes and two Chazy-Curzon particles, are studied in detail for standard choices of supplementary conditions. Applications to the gravitomagnetic "clock effect" are also discussed.
The spinning C-metric was discovered by Plebanski and Demianski as a generalization of the standard C-metric which is known to represent uniformly accelerated non-rotating black holes. We first transform the spinning C-metric into Weyl coordinates and analyze some of its properties as Killing vectors and curvature invariants. A transformation is then found which brings the metric into the canonical form of the radiative spacetimes with the boost-rotation symmetry. By analytically continuing the metric across "acceleration horizons", two new regions of the spacetime arise in which both Killing …
We investigate the motion of spinning test bodies in General Relativity. By means of a multipolar approximation method for extended test bodies we derive the equations of motion, and classify the orbital motion of pole-dipole test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Kerr geometry. An exact expression for the periastron shift of a spinning test body is given. Implications of test body spin corrections are studied and compared with the results obtained by means of other approximation schemes.
We study stability of a circular orbit of a spinning test particle in a Kerr spacetime. We find that some of the circular orbits become unstable in the direction perpendicular to the equatorial plane, although the orbits are still stable in the radial direction. Then for the large spin case ($S < \sim O(1)), the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) appears before the minimum of the effective potential in the equatorial plane disappears. This changes the radius of ISCO and then the frequency of the last circular orbit.
The motion of massless spinning test particles is investigated using the Newman-Penrose formalism within the Mathisson-Papapetrou model extended to massless particles by Mashhoon and supplemented by the Pirani condition. When the "multipole reduction world line" lies along a principal null direction of an algebraically special vacuum spacetime, the equations of motion can be explicitly integrated. Examples are given for some familiar spacetimes of this type in the interest of shedding some light on the consequences of this model.
The behaviour of charged spinning test particles moving along circular orbits in the equatorial plane of the Reissner-Nordström spacetime is studied in the framework of the Dixon-Souriau model completed with standard choices of supplementary conditions. The gravitomagnetic " clock effect", i.e. the delay in the arrival times of two oppositely circulating particles as measured by a static observer, is derived and discussed in the cases in which the particles have equal/opposite charge and spin, the latter being directed along the $z$-axis.
We investigate the dynamics of relativistic spinning test particles in the spacetime of a rotating black hole using the Papapetrou equations. We use the method of Lyapunov exponents to determine whether the orbits exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions, a signature of chaos. In the case of maximally spinning equal-mass binaries (a limiting case that violates the test-particle approximation) we find unambiguous positive Lyapunov exponents that come in pairs +/- lambda, a characteristic of Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We find no evidence for nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents for phys…
We present here three new solutions of Brans-Dicke theory for a stationary geometry with cylindrical symmetry in the presence of matter in rigid rotation with $T^μ_μ\neq 0$. All the solutions have eternal closed timelike curves in some region of the spacetime, the size of which depends on $ω$. Moreover, two of them do not go over a solution of general relativity in the limit $ω\to \infty$.
We construct a closed-form, fully analytical 4-metric that approximately represents the spacetime evolution of non-precessing, spinning black hole binaries from infinite separations up to a few orbits prior to merger. We employ the technique of asymptotic matching to join a perturbed Kerr metric in the neighborhood of each spinning black hole to a near-zone, post-Newtonian metric farther out. The latter is already naturally matched to a far-zone, post-Minkowskian metric that accounts for full temporal retardation. The result is a 4-metric that is approximately valid everywhere in space and in …
Physical interpretation of some stationary and non-stationary regions of the spinning C-metric is presented. They represent different spacetime regions of a uniformly accelerated Kerr black hole. Stability of geodesics corresponding to equilibrium points in a general stationary spacetime with an additional symmetry is also studied and results are then applied to the spinning C-metric.
We discuss the leading order correction to the equation of motion of a particle with spin on an arbitrary spacetime. A particle traveling in a curved spacetime is known to trace a geodesic of the background spacetime if the mass of the particle is negligibly small. For a spinning particle, it is known that there appears a term due to the coupling of the spin and the Riemann tensor of the background spacetime. Recently we have found the equation of motion of a non-spinning particle which includes the effect of gravitational radiation reaction. This paper is devoted to discussion of a consistent…
We consider the motion of spinning particles in the field of a well known vacuum static axially-symmetric spacetime, known as $γ$ metric, that can be interpreted as a generalization of the Schwarzschild manifold to include prolate or oblate deformations. We derive the equations of motion for spinning test particles by using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations together with the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition, and restricting the motion to the equatorial plane. We determine the limit imposed by super-luminal velocity for the spin of the particle located at the innermost stable circu…
In this paper, we study Hawking radiation as a massless particles tunneling process across the event horizon from the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes pierced by an infinitely long spinning cosmic string and a global monopole. Applying the WKB approximation and using a generalized Painlevé line element for stationary axisymmetric spacetimes, also by taking into account that the ADM mass of the black hole decreases due to the presence of topological defects, it is shown that the Hawking temperature remains unchanged for these black holes. The tunneling of charged massive particl…
The existence and stability under linear perturbation of closed timelike curves in the spacetime associated to Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a spinning string are studied. Due to the superposition of the black hole, we find that the spinning string spacetime is deformed in such a way to allow the existence of closed timelike geodesics.
Equilibrium conditions and spin dynamics of spinning test particles are discussed in the stationary and axially symmetric Kerr-de Sitter black-hole or naked-singularity spacetimes. The general equilibrium conditions are established, but due to their great complexity, the detailed discussion of the equilibrium conditions and spin dynamics is presented only in the simple and most relevant cases of equilibrium positions in the equatorial plane and on the symmetry axis of the spacetimes. It is shown that due to the combined effect of the rotation of the source and the cosmic repulsion the equilibr…
We explore the symmetries of classical stationary spacetimes in terms of the dynamics of a spinning string described by a worldsheet supersymmetric action. We show that for stationary configurations of the string, the action reduces to that for a pseudo-classical spinning point particle in an effective space, which is a conformally scaled quotient space of the original spacetime. As an example, we consider the stationary spinning string in the Kerr-Newman spacetime, whose motion is equivalent to that of the spinning point particle in the three-dimensional effective space. We present the Killin…
It has been established in Schwarzschild spacetime (and more generally in Kerr spacetime) that pairs of geometrically different timelike geodesics with the same radial and azimuthal frequencies exist in the strong field regime. The occurrence of this socalled isofrequency pairing is of relevance in view of gravitational-wave observations. In this paper we generalize the results on isofrequency pairing in two directions. Firstly, we allow for a (positive) cosmological constant, i.e., we replace the Schwarzschild spacetime with the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. Secondly, we consider not onl…
We study chaos dynamics of spinning particles in Kerr spacetime of rotating black holes use the Papapetrou equations by numerical integration. Because of spin, this system exists many chaos solutions, and exhibits some exceptional dynamic character. We investigate the relations between the orbits chaos and the spin magnitude S, pericenter, polar angle and Kerr rotation parameter a by means of a kind of brand new Fast Lyapulov Indicator (FLI) which is defined in general relativity. The classical definition of Lyapulov exponent (LE) perhaps fails in curve spacetime. And we emphasize that the Poi…
Twisted gravitational waves (TGWs) are nonplanar waves with twisted rays that move along a fixed direction in space. We study further the physical characteristics of a recent class of Ricci-flat solutions of general relativity representing TGWs with wave fronts that have negative Gaussian curvature. In particular, we investigate the influence of TGWs on the polarization of test electromagnetic waves and on the motion of classical spinning test particles in such radiation fields. To distinguish the polarization effects of twisted waves from plane waves, we examine the theoretical possibility of…
The singular field of a point charge has recently been described in terms of a new Green's function of curved spacetime. This singular field plays an important role in the calculation of the self-force acting upon the particle. We provide a method for calculating the singular field and a catalog of expansions of the singular field associated with the geodesic motion of monopole and dipole sources for scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational fields. These results can be used, for example, to calculate the effects of the self-force acting on a particle as it moves through spacetime.
We study the behaviour of spinning test particles in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Using Mathisson-Papapetrou equations of motion we confine our attention to spatially circular orbits and search for observable effects which could eventually discriminate among the standard supplementary conditions namely the Corinaldesi-Papapetrou, Pirani and Tulczyjew. We find that if the world line chosen for the multipole reduction and whose unit tangent we denote as $U$ is a circular orbit then also the generalized momentum $P$ of the spinning test particle is tangent to a circular orbit even though $P$ and …
A spinning particle in the Schwarzschild spacetime deviates from geodesic behavior because of its spin. A spinless particle also deviates from geodesic behavior when a test radiation field is superimposed on the Schwarzschild background: in fact the interaction with the radiation field, i.e., the absorption and re-emission of radiation, leads to a friction-like drag force responsible for the well known effect which exists already in Newtonian gravity, the Poynting-Robertson effect. Here the Poynting-Robertson effect is extended to the case of spinning particles by modifying the Mathisson-Papap…
In this paper we study the dynamics of trajectory of a spinning particle in a Schwarzschild spacetime involving a global monopole. We set up the equations of motion and find three types of trajectories. We study the conditions that a spinning particle, originally moving in the innermost stable circular orbit around the black hole involving a global monopole, will escape to infinity after it is kicked by another particle or photon. Three types of trajectories of a spinning particle in a Schwarzschild spacetime involving a global monopole are simulated in detail and the escaping energy and veloc…
We present spinning Q-balls and boson stars in four dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. These are smooth, horizonless solutions for gravity coupled to a massive complex scalar field with a harmonic dependence on time and the azimuthal angle. Similar to the flat spacetime configurations, the angular momentum is quantized. We find that a class of solutions with a self-interaction potential has a limit corresponding to static solitons with axial symmetry only. An exact solution describing spherically symmetric Q-balls in a fixed AdS background is also discussed.
We report on the multipolar equations of motion for spinning test bodies in the de Sitter spacetime of constant positive curvature. The dynamics of spinning particles is discussed for the two supplementary conditions of Frenkel and Tulczyjew. Furthermore, the 4-momentum and the spin are explicitly expressed in terms of the spacetime coordinates with the help of the 10 Killing vectors available in de Sitter spacetime.
We investigate the dynamics of the Papapetrou equations in Kerr spacetime. These equations provide a model for the motion of a relativistic spinning test particle orbiting a rotating (Kerr) black hole. We perform a thorough parameter space search for signs of chaotic dynamics by calculating the Lyapunov exponents for a large variety of initial conditions. We find that the Papapetrou equations admit many chaotic solutions, with the strongest chaos occurring in the case of eccentric orbits with pericenters close to the limit of stability against plunge into a maximally spinning Kerr black hole. …
A special arrangement of spinning strings with dislocations similar to a von Kármán vortex street is studied. We numerically solve the geodesic equations for the special case of a test particle moving along twoinfinite rows of pure dislocations and also discuss the case of pure spinning defects.
We study the motion of a classical spinning particle (with spin degrees of freedom described by a vector of Grassmann variables) in higher-dimensional general rotating black hole spacetimes with a cosmological constant. In all dimensions n we exhibit n bosonic functionally independent integrals of spinning particle motion, corresponding to explicit and hidden symmetries generated from the principal conformal Killing--Yano tensor. Moreover, we demonstrate that in 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-dimensional black hole spacetimes such integrals are in involution, proving the bosonic part of the motion integrab…
We construct an approximate metric that represents the spacetime of spinning binary black holes (BBH) approaching merger. We build the metric as an analytical superposition of two Kerr metrics in harmonic coordinates, where we transform each black hole term with time-dependent boosts describing an inspiral trajectory. The velocities and trajectories of the boost are obtained by solving the post-Newtonian (PN) equations of motion at 3.5 PN order. We analyze the spacetime scalars of the new metric and we show that it is an accurate approximation of Einstein's field equations in vacuum for a BBH …
A non-monotonic behavior of the velocity gradient of a test particle revolving around a rapidly rotating black hole in the locally non-rotating frame of reference is known as the Aschenbach effect. This effect can serve as a distinguishing signature of rapidly rotating black holes, being potentially useful for the measurements of the astrophysical black hole spins. This paper is the generalization of our previous research to the motion of spinning particles around a rotating black hole with non-zero cosmological constant. We show that both the particle's spin $s$ and the cosmological constant …
We describe a new numerical algorithm for ray tracing in the external spacetimes of spinning compact objects characterized by arbitrary quadrupole moments. Such spacetimes describe non-Kerr vacuum solutions that can be used to test the no-hair theorem in conjunction with observations of accreting black holes. They are also appropriate for neutron stars with spin frequencies in the 300-600 Hz range, which are typical of the bursting sources in low-mass X-ray binaries. We use our algorithm to show that allowing for the quadrupole moment of the spacetime to take arbitrary values leads to observab…
Obtaining solutions of the Einstein field equations describing spinning compact bodies is typically challenging. The Newman-Janis algorithm provides a procedure to obtain rotating spacetimes from a static, spherically symmetric, seed metric. It is not guaranteed, however, that the resulting rotating spacetime solves the same field equations as the seed. Moreover, the former may not be circular, and thus expressible in Boyer-Lindquist-like coordinates. Amongst the variations of the original procedure, a modified Newman-Janis algorithm (MNJA) has been proposed that, by construction, originates a…
In the present article, we study the orbital resonance corresponds to an extended object approximated up to the dipole order term in Kerr spacetime. We start with the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations under the linear spin approximation and primarily concentrate on two particular events. First, when the orbits are nearly circular and executing a small oscillation about the equatorial plane and second, a generic trajectory confined on the equatorial plane. While in the first case, all the three fundamental frequencies, namely, radial $Ω_r$, angular $Ω_θ$, azimuthal $Ω_ϕ$ can be commensurate with e…
The astrophysical relevance of chaos for a test particle with spin moving in Schwarzschild spacetime was the objective of \cite{Verhaaren10}. Even if the results of the study seem to be qualitatively in agreement with similar works, the study presented in \cite{Verhaaren10} suffers both from theoretical and technical issues. These issues are discussed in this comment.
We study the motion of spinning test particles in Kerr spacetime using the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations; we impose different supplementary conditions among the well known Corinaldesi-Papapetrou, Pirani and Tulczyjew's and analyze their physical implications in order to decide which is the most natural to use. We find that if the particle's center of mass world line, namely the one chosen for the multipole reduction, is a spatially circular orbit (sustained by the tidal forces due to the spin) then the generalized momentum $P$ of the test particle is also tangent to a spatially circular orbit…
We find a class of solutions of Einstein's field equations representing spacetime outside a spinning cosmic string surrounded by a gas of non-spinning cosmic strings, and show that there exist closed timelike geodesics in this spacetime.
