We explore the symmetries of classical stationary spacetimes in terms of the dynamics of a spinning string described by a worldsheet supersymmetric action. We show that for stationary configurations of the string, the action reduces to that for a pseudo-classical spinning point particle in an effective space, which is a conformally scaled quotient space of the original spacetime. As an example, we consider the stationary spinning string in the Kerr-Newman spacetime, whose motion is equivalent to that of the spinning point particle in the three-dimensional effective space. We present the Killing tensor as well as the spin-valued Killing vector of this space. However, the nongeneric supersymmetry corresponding to the Killing-Yano tensor of the Kerr-Newman spacetime is lost in the effective space.
We find that spinning particles with suitable couplings propagating in certain supersymmetric backgrounds of $D=4$, $N=2$ and $D=5$, $N=1$ minimal supergravities are invariant under symmetries generated by the twisted covariant form hierarchies of these theories. We also compare our results with the symmetries of spinning particles generated by Killing-Yano forms which are responsible for the separability properties of some gravitational backgrounds.
This paper studies various properties of the Pomeransky-Sen'kov doubly-spinning black ring spacetime. I discuss the structure of the ergoregion, and then go on to demonstrate the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for null, zero energy geodesics, which exist in the ergoregion. These geodesics are used to construct geometrically motivated coordinates that cover the black hole horizon. Finally, I relate this weak form of separability to the existence of a conformal Killing tensor in a particular 4-dimensional spacetime obtained by Kaluza-Klein reduction, and show that a related conform…
The properties of a stationary massless string endowed with intrinsic spin are discussed. The spacetime is Minkowskian geometrically but the topology is nontrivial due to the horizon located on the surface $r=0$, similar with Rindler's case. For $r$ less than the Planck length $b$, $g_{ϕϕ}$ has the same sign as $g_{tt}$ and closed timelike curves are possible. We assume an elementary particles' spin originates in the frame dragging effect produced by the rotation of the source. The Sagnac time delay is calculated and proves to be constant.
We investigate the hidden symmetries of the Kerr-Newman, of the D=5 minimal gauged supergravity which admits a Killing-Maxwell system in the sense of Carter and of higher dimensional spacetimes in the presence of Killing-Yano torsion. We note that when an electromagnetic tensor is present and an associated Killing-Maxwell system can be constructed in the sense of Carter, the Killing- Maxwell field becomes a PCKY (primary conformal Killing-Yano) tensor or a PGCKY (primary generalized conformal Killing-Yano) tensor, the latter in the presence of torsion. We point out the structure of the Dirac-t…
We study analytically the Klein-Gordon wave equation for stationary massive scalar fields linearly coupled to spinning Kerr black holes. In particular, using the WKB approximation, we derive a compact formula for the discrete spectrum of scalar field masses which characterize the stationary composed Kerr-black-hole-massive-scalar-field configurations in the large-coupling regime $Mμ\gg1$ (here $M$ and $μ$ are respectively the mass of the central black hole and the proper mass of the scalar field). We confirm our analytically derived formula for the Kerr-scalar-field mass spectrum with numerica…
The generalized Killing equations and the symmetries of Taub-NUT spinning space are investigated. For spinless particles the Runge-Lenz vector defines a constant of motion directly, whereas for spinning particles it now requires a non-trivial contribution from spin. The generalized Runge-Lenz vector for spinning Taub-NUT space is completely evaluated.
We reconsider the gauge symmetries of the spinning particle by a direct examination of the Lagrangian using a systematic procedure based on the Noether identities. It proves possible to find a set of local Bosonic and Fermionic gauge transformations that have a simple gauge group structure, which is a true Lie algebra, both for the massless and massive case. This new Fermionic gauge transformation of the "position" and "spin" variables in the action decouples from that of the "einbein" and "gravitino". It is also possible to redefine the fields so that this simple algebra of commutators of the…
The local, covariant, continuous, anticommuting and nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for all the fields of a (0 + 1)-dimensional spinning relativistic particle are obtained in the framework of augmented superfield approach to BRST formalism. The trajectory of this super-particle is parametrized by a monotonically increasing parameter τthat is embedded in a D-dimensional flat Minkowski spacetime manifold. This physically useful one-dimensional system is considered on a three (1 + 2)-dimensional supermanifold which is parametrized by an even eleme…
Some quantum-gravity theories suggest that the absorbing horizon of a classical black hole should be replaced by a reflective surface which is located a microscopic distance above the would-be classical horizon. Instead of an absorbing black hole, the resulting horizonless spacetime describes a reflective exotic compact object. Motivated by this intriguing prediction, in the present paper we explore the physical properties of exotic compact objects which are linearly coupled to stationary bound-state massive scalar field configurations. In particular, solving the Klein-Gordon wave equation for…
We present the TCFH of 11-dimensional supergravity and so demonstrate that the form bilinears of supersymmetric solutions satisfy a generalisation of the conformal Killing-Yano equation with resepct to the TCFH connection. We also compute the Killing-Stäckel, Killing-Yano and closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of all spherically symmetric M-branes that include the M2-brane, M5-brane, KK-monopole and pp-wave and demonstrate that their geodesic flows are completely integrable by giving all independent conserved charges in involution. We then find that all form bilinears of pp-wave and KK-mono…
Space-time symmetries are a crucial ingredient of any theoretical model in physics. Unlike internal symmetries, which may or may not be gauged and/or spontaneously broken, space-time symmetries do not admit any ambiguity: they are gauged by gravity, and any conceivable physical system (other than the vacuum) is bound to break at least some of them. Motivated by this observation, we study how to couple gravity with the Goldstone fields that non-linearly realize spontaneously broken space-time symmetries. This can be done in complete generality by weakly gauging the Poincare symmetry group in th…
We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for a supersymmetric system of a free spinning relativistic particle within the framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. A novel feature of our present investigation is the consistent and clear supersymmetric modification of the celebrated horizontality condition for the precise determination of the proper (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for all the bosonic and fermionic dynamical variables of our theory which is considered on a (1, 2)-dimension…
The first results, both positive and negative, recently obtained in the area of constructing stationary spinning solitons in flat Minkowski space in 3+1 dimensions are discussed.

We explore the rich phase space of singly spinning (both neutral and charged) black hole solutions in the large $D$ limit. We find several 'bumpy' branches which are connected to multiple (concentric) black rings, and black Saturns. Additionally we obtain stationary solutions without axisymmetry that are only stationary at $D\rightarrow \infty$, but correspond to long lived black hole solutions at finite $D$. These multipolar solutions can appear as intermediate configurations in the decay of ultra-spinning Myers-Perry black holes into stable black holes. Finally we also construct stationary s…
We study the motion of a classical spinning particle (with spin degrees of freedom described by a vector of Grassmann variables) in higher-dimensional general rotating black hole spacetimes with a cosmological constant. In all dimensions n we exhibit n bosonic functionally independent integrals of spinning particle motion, corresponding to explicit and hidden symmetries generated from the principal conformal Killing--Yano tensor. Moreover, we demonstrate that in 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-dimensional black hole spacetimes such integrals are in involution, proving the bosonic part of the motion integrab…
A $q$-deformed free spinning relativistic particle is discussed in the framework of the Lagrangian formalism. Three equivalent Lagrangians are obtained for this system which are endowed with $q$-deformed local (super)gauge symmetries and reparametrization invariance. It is demonstrated that these symmetries are on-shell equivalent only for $ q = \pm1 $ under particular identification of the transformation parameters. The same condition ($ q=\pm1 $) emerges due to the requirement that the $q$-commutator of two supersymmetric gauge transformations should generate a reparametrization plus a super…
We extend the cosmological bootstrap to correlators involving massless particles with spin. In de Sitter space, these correlators are constrained both by symmetries and by locality. In particular, the de Sitter isometries become conformal symmetries on the future boundary of the spacetime, which are reflected in a set of Ward identities that the boundary correlators must satisfy. We solve these Ward identities by acting with weight-shifting operators on scalar seed solutions. Using this weight-shifting approach, we derive three- and four-point correlators of massless spin-1 and spin-2 fields w…
The dynamics of a classical branelike object in a curved background is derived from the covariant stress-energy conservation of the brane matter. The world sheet equations and boundary conditions are obtained in the pole-dipole approximation, where nontrivial brane thickness gives rise to its intrinsic angular momentum. It is shown that intrinsic angular momentum couples to both, the background curvature and the brane orbital degrees of freedom. The whole procedure is manifestly covariant with respect to spacetime diffeomorphisms and world sheet reparametrizations. In addition, two extra gauge…
It has often been suggested (especially by Carlip) that spacetime symmetries in the neighborhood of a black hole horizon may be relevant to a statistical understanding of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. A prime candidate for this type of symmetry is that which is exhibited by the Einstein tensor. More precisely, it is now known that this tensor takes on a strongly constrained (block-diagonal) form as it approaches any stationary, non-extremal Killing horizon. Presently, exploiting the geometrical properties of such horizons, we provide a particularly elegant argument that substantiates this hi…
We suggest a way to study possible conformal symmetries on black hole horizons. We do this by carrying out a Kaluza-Klein like reduction of the Einstein-Hilbert action along the ignorable coordinates of stationary and axisymmetric black holes. Rigid diffeomorphism invariance of the $m$-ignorable coordinates then becomes a global $SL(m,R)$ gauge symmetry of the reduced action. Related to each non-vanishing angular velocity there is a particular $SL(2,R)$ subgroup, which can be extended to the Witt algebra on the black hole horizons. The classical Einstein-Hilbert action thus has $k$-copies of i…
We review the geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in curved spaces. Investigating the generalized Killing equations for spinning spaces, we express the constants of motion in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. Passing from the spinning spaces to the Dirac equation in curved backgrounds we point out the role of the Killing-Yano tensors in the construction of the Dirac-type operators. The general results are applied to the case of the four-dimensional Euclidean Taub-Newman-Unti-Tamburino space. The gravitational and axial anomalies are studied for generalized Euclidean Taub-NUT me…
We write down a general action principle for spinning strings in 2+1 dimensional space-time without introducing Grassmann variables. The action is written solely in terms of coordinates taking values in the 2+1 Poincare group, and it has the usual string symmetries, i.e. it is invariant under a) diffeomorphisms of the world sheet and b) Poincare transformations. The system can be generalized to an arbitrary number of space-time dimensions, and also to spinning membranes and p-branes.
We examine the problem of the evaluation of both the propagator and of the partition function of a spinning particle in an external field at the classical as well as the quantum level, in connection with the asserted exactness of the saddle point approximation (SPA) for this problem. At the classical level we argue that exactness of the SPA stems from the fact that the dynamics (on the two--sphere $S^2$) of a classical spinning particle in a magnetic field is the reduction from $\br^4$ to $S^2$ of a linear dynamical system on $\br^4$. At the quantum level, however, and within the path integral…
These are introductory notes on the study of the Dirac equation in curved spacetime and its relation to hidden symmetries of the dynamics. We present general results on the relation between special spacetime tensors and hidden symmetries, both for the full Dirac equation and for its semi-classical limit, the spinning particle. A concrete application of the general results is provided by the case of rotating higher dimensional black holes with cosmological constant, which we discuss. For these metrics the Dirac equation is separable and the relation between this and hidden symmetries is explain…
This paper investigates semiclassical backreaction of a conformally coupled massless scalar field on the geometrical background of a nearly spinning cosmic string - the spin density is smaller than, but arbitrarily close to, the dislocation parameter. As the spin density approaches the dislocation parameter, it is shown that an "ergoregion" spreads indefinitely around the cosmic string, boosting along the string axis the once static observers. Considering that the geometrical background contains closed timelike curves when the spin density exceeds the dislocation parameter, it is argued that t…
We obtain new exact solutions in Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity of every odd dimension higher than three. These new spacetimes are stationary but non-static, coupled with the Maxwell field, and asymptotic AdS at least locally. In order to investigate such new solutions, we adopt the characteristic ansatz for the metric form. It is presented that the local expression of our metric possesses some interesting properties, in which the most peculiar one is what is called Sasakian structure. Somewhat intricate relationship is unveiled between our solution and the already-known rotating solution which…
We introduce a formulation for spinning gravitating objects in the effective field theory in the post-Newtonian scheme in the context of the binary inspiral problem. We aim at an effective action, where all field modes below the orbital scale are integrated out. We spell out the relevant degrees of freedom, in particular the rotational ones, and the associated symmetries. Building on these symmetries, we introduce the minimal coupling part of the point particle action in terms of gauge rotational variables, and construct the spin-induced nonminimal couplings, where we obtain the leading order …
We propose the action of d=4 Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spinning particle with arbitrary fixed quantum numbers. Regardless of the spin value, the configuration space of the model is a direct product of d=4 AdS space and two-dimensional sphere corresponds to spinning degrees of freedom. The model is an AdS counterpart of the massive spinning particle in the Minkowski space proposed earlier. Being AdS-invariant, the model possesses two gauge symmetries implying identical conservation law for AdS-counterparts of mass and spin. Two equivalent forms of the action functional, minimal and manifestly covari…
We point out that the new interaction of spinning particles with the torsion tensor, discussed recently, is odd under charge conjugation and time reversal. This explains rather unexpected symmetry properties of the induced effective 4-fermion interaction.
The classical spinning particles are considered such that quantization of classical model leads to an irreducible massive representation of the Poincaré group. The class of gauge equivalent classical particle world lines is shown to form a $[(d+1)/2]$-dimensional world sheet in $d$-dimensional Minkowski space, irrespectively to any specifics of classical model. For massive spinning particles in $d=3,4$, the world sheets are shown to be cylinders. The radius of cylinder is fixed by representation. In higher dimensions, particle's world sheet turn out to be a toroidal cylinder $\mathbb{R}\times …
Gravity coupled three--dimensional $σ$--model describing the stationary Einstein--Maxwell--dilaton system with general dilaton coupling is studied. Killing equations for the corresponding five--dimensional target space are integrated. It is shown that for general coupling constant $α$ the symmetry algebra is isomorphic to the maximal solvable subalgebra of $sl(3,R)$. For two critical values $α=0$ and $α=\sqrt{3}$, Killing algebra enlarges to the full $sl(3,R)$ and $su(2,1)\times R$ algebras respectively, which correspond to five--dimensional Kaluza--Klein and four--dimensional Brans--Dicke--Ma…
Starting with the 2+1 Einstein--Maxwell--Dilaton system with a cosmological constant and assuming two commuting Killing symmetries we derive the corresponding $1+0 σ$--model. It is shown that, for general values of the coupling parameters, the $T$--duality group is $SL(2,R)$, which coincides with the group of linear coordinate transformations along the Killing orbits. This duality, along with a suitable parameter choice, is applied to obtain some new spinning solutions in the alternative gravity theories: Einstein--Maxwell, Brans--Dicke and Einstein--Maxwell--Dilaton.
We review the current status of the problem of constructing classical field theory solutions describing stationary vortex rings in Minkowski space in 3+1 dimensions. We describe the known up to date solutions of this type, such as the static knot solitons stabilized by the topological Hopf charge, the attempts to gauge them, the anomalous solitons stabilized by the Chern-Simons number, as well as the non-Abelian monopole and sphaleron rings. Passing to the rotating solutions, we first discuss the conditions insuring that they do not radiate, and then describe the spinning $Q$-balls, their twis…
We revisit the classical theory of a relativistic massless charged point particle with spin and interacting with an external electromagnetic field. In particular, we give a proper definition of its kinetic energy and its total energy, the latter being conserved when the external field is stationary. We also write the conservation laws for the linear and angular momenta. Finally, we find that the particle's velocity may differ from $c$ as a result of the spin---electromagnetic field interaction, without jeopardizing Lorentz invariance.
A connection between superfluidity and gravitation is established for physical stationary gravitational fields. We show that the spinning cosmic string metric describes the gravitational field associated with the single vortex in a superfluid condensate model for space-time outside the vortex core. This metric differs significantly from the usual acoustic metric for the Onsager-Feynman vortex. We also consider the question of what happens when many vortices are present, and show that on large scales a Gödel-like metric emerges. In both the single and multiple vortex cases the presence of close…
We demonstrate that five-dimensional, asymptotically flat, stationary and biaxisymmetric, vacuum black holes with lens space $L(n, 1)$ topology, possessing the simplest rod structure, do not exist. In particular, we show that the general solution on the axes and horizon, which we recently constructed by exploiting the integrability of this system, must suffer from a conical singularity on the inner axis component. We give a proof of this for two distinct singly spinning configurations and numerical evidence for the generic doubly spinning solution.
It has been recently argued by some authors that is impossible to construct a Weyl invariant spinning membrane action, where the $S$-supersymmetry associated with the 3D superconformal algebra, is relinquished without gauge fixing. Contrary to those assertions, we show why it is possible to construct a Weyl-invariant spinning polynomial membrane action, without curvature terms, where $both$ the conformal boost symmetry and $S$-supersymmetry are explicitly broken by the action. It is shown that the gauge algebra $closes$ despite that the two latter symmetries are broken . For this to happen, a m…
We compare the rigorous equations describing the motion of spinning test particles in gravitational and electromagnetic fields, and show that if the Mathisson-Pirani spin condition holds then exact gravito-electromagnetic analogies emerge. These analogies provide a familiar formalism to treat gravitational problems, as well as a means for comparing the two interactions. Fundamental differences are manifest in the symmetries and time projections of the electromagnetic and gravitational tidal tensors. The physical consequences of the symmetries of the tidal tensors are explored comparing the fol…
We study the hidden symmetries of the fermionic sector of D=11 supergravity, and the role of K(E10) as a generalised `R-symmetry'. We find a consistent model of a massless spinning particle on an E10/K(E10) coset manifold whose dynamics can be mapped onto the fermionic and bosonic dynamics of D=11 supergravity in the near space-like singularity limit. This E10-invariant superparticle dynamics might provide the basis of a new definition of M-theory, and might describe the `de-emergence' of space-time near a cosmological singularity.
We discuss the phenomenon of classical anomaly. It is observed for 3D Berezin-Marinov (BM), Barducci-Casalbuoni-Lusanna (BCL) and Cortes-Plyushchay-Velazquez (CPV) pseudoclassical spin particle models. We show that quantum mechanically these different models correspond to the same P,T-invariant system of planar fermions, but the quantum system has global symmetries being not reproducible classically in full in any of the models. We demonstrate that the specific U(1) gauge symmetry characterized by the opposite coupling constants of spin s=+1/2 and s=-1/2 states has a natural classical analog i…
To describe a massive particle with fixed, but arbitrary, spin on $d=4$ anti-de Sitter space $M^4$, we propose the point-particle model with configuration space ${\cal M}^6 = M^{4}\times S^{2}$, where the sphere $S^2$ corresponds to the spin degrees of freedom. The model possesses two gauge symmetries expressing strong conservation of the phase-space counterparts of the second- and fourth-order Casimir operators for $so(3,2)$. We prove that the requirement of energy to have a global positive minimum $E_o$ over the configuration space is equivalent to the relation $E_o > s$, $s$ being the parti…
We classify the constraints on a stationary point of the potential invariant under a finite group into intrinsic and extrinsic based on whether they are independent of the coefficients in the potential or not. We find that the symmetry group of a set of stationary points can be larger than that of the potential and the stabilizer under this group generates intrinsic constraints. By applying these findings in the framework of the auxiliary group, we show that the constraints that can only be obtained extrinsically in an elementary theory can be generated intrinsically in an effective theory.
This article reviews the role of hidden symmetries of dynamics in the study of physical systems, from the basic concepts of symmetries in phase space to the forefront of current research. Such symmetries emerge naturally in the description of physical systems as varied as non-relativistic, relativistic, with or without gravity, classical or quantum, and are related to the existence of conserved quantities of the dynamics and integrability. In recent years their study has grown intensively, due to the discovery of non-trivial examples that apply to different types of theories and different numb…
We present a gauged twistor model of a free massive spinning particle in four-dimensional Minkowski space. This model is governed by an action, referred to here as the gauged generalized Shirafuji (GGS) action, that consists of twistor variables, auxiliary variables, and $U(1)$ and $SU(2)$ gauge fields on the one-dimensional parameter space of a particle's worldline. The GGS action remains invariant under reparametrization and the local $U(1)$ and $SU(2)$ transformations of the relevant variables, although the $SU(2)$ symmetry is nonlinearly realized. We consider the canonical Hamiltonian form…
We study the geometry of the Lagrangian Batalin--Vilkovisky theory on an antisymplectic manifold. We show that gauge symmetries of the BV-theory are essentially the symmetries of an even symplectic structure on the stationary surface of the master action.
We investigate transformations which are not symmetries of a theory but nevertheless leave invariant the set of all symmetry elements and representations. Generalizing from the example of a three Higgs doublet model with $Δ(27)$ symmetry, we show that the possibility of such transformations signals physical degeneracies in the parameter space of a theory. We show that stationary points only appear in multiplets which are representations of the group of these so-called equivalence transformations. As a consequence, the stationary points are amongst the solutions of a set of homogeneous linear e…
Following earlier work by Polyakov and Gubser, Klebanov and Polyakov, we attempt to clarify the structure of vertex operators representing string states which have large (``semiclassical'') values of AdS energy (equal to 4-d dimension Δ) and angular momentum J in S^5 or spin S in AdS_5. We comment on the meaning of semiclassical limit in the context of α' perturbative expansion for the 2-d anomalous dimensions of the corresponding vertex operators. We consider in detail the leading-order 1-loop renormalization of these operators in AdS_5 x S^5 sigma model (ignoring fermionic contributions). We…
Certain supersymmetric elementary string states with spin can be viewed as small black rings whose horizon has the topology of S^1 \times S^{d-3} in a d-dimensional string theory. By analyzing the singular black ring solution in the supergravity approximation, and using various symmetries of the α' corrected effective action we argue that the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy of the black string solution in the full string theory agrees with the statistical entropy of the same system up to an overall normalization constant. While the normalization constant cannot be determined by the symmetry pr…
