The effects of non-Riemannian structures in Cosmology have been studied long ago and are still a relevant subject of investigation. In the seventies, it was discovered that singularity avoidance and early accelerated expansion can be induced by torsion in the Einstein-Cartan theory. In this framework, torsion is not dynamical and is completely expressed by means of the spin sources. Thus, in order to study the effects of torsion in the Einstein-Cartan theory, one has to introduce matter with spin. In principle, this can be done in several ways. In this work we consider the cosmological evolution of the universe in the presence of a constant isotropic and homogeneous axial current and the Weyssenhoff spinning fluid. We analyse possible solutions of this model, with and without the spinning fluid.
The rotational dynamics of an $N$-body system at the first post-Newtonian order in Einstein-Cartan theory is derived. This result is achieved by performing the point-particle limit of the equations of motion of the Weyssenhoff fluid, which models the quantum spin effects residing inside the bodies. For the special case of binary systems, we determine the Lagrangian function and the resulting first integrals underlying the translational dynamics and the spin precession.
The generation of gravitational waves from a post-Newtonian source endowed with a quantum spin, modeled by the Weyssenhoff fluid, is investigated in the context of Einstein-Cartan theory at the first post-Newtonian level by resorting to the Blanchet-Damour formalism. After having worked out the basic principles of the hydrodynamics in Einstein-Cartan framework, we study the Weyssenhoff fluid within the post-Newtonian approximation scheme. The complexity of the underlying dynamical equations suggests to employ a discrete description via the point-particle limit, a procedure which permits the an…
We derive the equations of motion for an $N$-body system in the Einstein-Cartan gravity theory at the first post-Newtonian order by exploiting the Weyssenhoff fluid as the spin model. Our approach consists in performing the point-particle limit of the continuous description of the gravitational source. The final equations provide a hint for the validity of the effacing principle at 1PN level in Einstein-Cartan model. The analogies with the general relativistic dynamics involving the macroscopic angular momentum are also discussed.
We generalize the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations for space-times endowed with a Weyssenhoff like torsion field in the Einstein-Cartan theory. The new set of structure equations clearly show how the presence of torsion affects the geometry of the space-time. We obtain new exact solutions for compact objects with non-null spin surrounded by vacuum, explore their properties and discuss how these solutions should be smoothly matched to an exterior space-time. We study how spin changes the Buchdahl limit for the maximum compactness of stars. Moreover, under rather generic conditions, we prove…
We consider the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric homogeneous matter distribution consisting of a Weyssenhoff fluid in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. Our aim is to investigate the effects of torsion and spin averaged terms on the final outcome of the collapse. For a specific interior spacetime setup, namely the homogeneous and isotropic FLRW metric, we obtain two classes of solutions to the field equations where depending on the relation between spin source parameters, $(i)$ the collapse procedure culminates in a spacetime singularity or $(ii)$ it is replaced…
In the present work we investigate wormhole structures and the energy conditions supporting them, in Einstein-Cartan theory ({\sf ECT}). The matter content consists of a Weyssenhoff fluid along with an anisotropic matter which together generalize the anisotropic energy momentum tensor in general relativity ({\sf GR}) to include spin effects. Assuming that the radial pressure and energy density obey a linear equation of state, we introduce exact asymptotically flat and anti-de-Sitter spacetimes that admit traversable wormholes and respect energy conditions. Such wormhole solutions are studied i…
In the present work we investigate evolving wormhole configurations described by a constant redshift function in Einstein-Cartan theory ({\sf ECT}). The matter content consists of a Weyssenhoff fluid along with an anisotropic matter which together generalize the anisotropic energy momentum tensor in general relativity ({\sf GR}) in order to include the effects of intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of particles. Using a generalized Friedmann-Robertson-Walker ({\sf FRW}) spacetime, we derive analytical evolving wormhole geometries by assuming a particular equation of state ({\sf EoS}) for energy …
We analyse the kinematics of cosmological spacetimes with nonzero torsion, in the framework of the classical Einstein-Cartan gravity. After a brief introduction to the basic features of spaces with non-vanishing torsion, we consider a family of observers moving along timelike worldlines and focus on their kinematic behaviour. In so doing, we isolate the irreducible variables monitoring the observers' motion and derive their evolution formulae and associated constraint equations. Our aim is to identify the effects of spacetime torsion, and the changes they introduce into the kinematics of the s…
Static solutions representing wormhole configurations in Einstein-Cartan theory ({\sf ECT}) in the presence of electric charge are obtained. The solutions are described by a constant redshift function with matter content consisting of a Weyssenhoff fluid along with an anisotropic matter and energy momentum tensor ({\sf EMT}) of the electric field which together generalize the anisotropic energy momentum tensor in Einstein-Maxwell theory in order to include the effects of the intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of the particles. Assuming the equation of state ({\sf EoS}) $p_r={\sf w}_1ρ$ and $p_t…

In the present work, we revisit the process of gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric homogeneous dust fluid which is known as the Oppenheimer-Snyder (OS) model [1]. We show that such a scenario would not end in a spacetime singularity when the spin degrees of freedom of fermionic particles within the collapsing cloud are taken into account. To this purpose, we take the matter content of the stellar object as a homogeneous Weyssenhoff fluid which is a generalization of perfect fluid in general relativity (GR) to include the spin of matter. Employing the homogeneous and isotropic FLR…
Based on the Padmanabhan's proposal, the accelerated expansion of the universe can be driven by the difference between the surface and bulk degrees of freedom in a region of space, described by the relation $dV/dt=N_{sur}-N_{bulk}$ where $N_{sur}$ and $N_{bulk}=-N_{em}+N_{de}$ are the degrees of freedom assigned to the surface area and the matter-energy content inside the bulk such that the indexes $"em"$ and $"de"$ represent energy-momentum and dark energy, respectively. In the present work, the dynamical effect of the Weyssenhoff perfect fluid with intrinsic spin and its corresponding spin d…
Using a new geometrical method introduced by Werner, we find the deflection angle in the weak limit approximation by a spinning cosmic string in the context of the Einstein-Cartan (EC) theory of gravity. We begin by adopting the String-Randers optical metric, then we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical geometry and derive the leading terms of the deflection angle in the equatorial plane. Calculations shows that light deflection is affected by the intrinsic spin of the cosmic string and torsion.
The static spherically symmetric traversable wormholes are analysed in the Einstein- Cartan theory of gravitation. In particular, we computed the torsion tensor for matter fields with different spin S = 0; 1/2; 1; 3/2. Interestingly, only for certain values of the spin the torsion contribution to Einstein-Cartan field equation allows one to satisfy both faring-out condition and Null Energy Condition. In this scenario traversable wormholes can be produced by using usual (non-exotic) spinning matter.

We systematically derive an action for a nonrelativistic spinning partile in flat background and discuss its canonical formulation in both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches. This action is taken as the starting point for deriving the corresponding action in a curved background. It is achieved by following our recently developed technique of localising the flat space galilean symmetry \cite{BMM1, BMM3, BMM2}. The coupling of the spinning particle to a Newton-Cartan background is obtained naturally. The equation of motion is found to differ from the geodesic equation, in agreement with earli…
We derive upper and lower limits for the mass-radius ratio of spin-fluid spheres in Einstein-Cartan theory, with matter satisfying a linear barotropic equation of state, and in the presence of a cosmological constant. Adopting a spherically symmetric interior geometry, we obtain the generalized continuity and Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations for a Weyssenhoff spin-fluid in hydrostatic equilibrium, expressed in terms of the effective mass, density and pressure, all of which contain additional contributions from the spin. The generalized Buchdahl inequality, which remains valid at any point …
