We investigate the motion of a spinning test particle in a spatially-flat FRW-type space-time in the framework of the Einstein-Cartan theory. The space-time has a torsion arising from a spinning fluid filling the space-time. We show that for spinning particles with nonzero transverse spin components, the torsion induces a precession of particle spin around the direction of the fluid spin. We also show that a charged spinning particle moving in a torsion-less spatially-flat FRW space-time in the presence of a uniform magnetic field undergoes a precession of a different character.
In investigating the relation between vorticity and gyroscopic precession, we calculate the vorticity vector in Godel, Kerr, Lewis, Schwarzschild, Minkowski metric and find out the vorticity vector of the specific observers is the angular velocity of gyroscopic precession. Furthermore, considering space-time torsion will flip the vorticity and spin-curvature force to opposite sign. This result is very similar to the behavior of positive and negative helicity of quantum spin in Stern-Gerlach force. It implies that the inclusion of torsion will lead to analogous property of quantum spin even in …
In the framework of parallelism general relativity (PGR), the Dirac particle spin precession in the rotational gravitational field is studied. In terms of the equivalent tetrad of Kerr frame, we investigate the torsion axial-vector spin coupling in PGR. In the case of the weak field and slow rotation approximation, we obtain that the torsion axial-vector has the dipole-like structure, but different from the gravitomagnetic field, which indicates that the choice of the Kerr tetrad will influence on the physics interpretation of the axial-vector spin coupling.
Killing symmetries are revisited in $d$$=$$5$ bulk geometric torsion (GT) perturbation theory to investigate the perihelion precession. Computation reveals a non-perturbative (NP) modification to the precession known in General Relativity (GR). Remarkably the analysis re-assures our proposed holographic correspondence between a perturbative GT in bulk and a boundary GR coupled to $B_{2}$$ \wedge $$F_{2}$. In fact the topological correction is sourced by a non-Newtonian potential in GR and we identify it with an ``electro-gravito'' dipole. Interestingly the dipole correction is shown to possess…
We analyse a spin precession of slow neutrons in the Einstein-Cartan gravity with torsion, chameleon and magnetic field. For the derivation of the Heisenberg equation of motion of the neutron spin we use the effective low-energy potential, derived by Ivanov and Wellenzohn (Phys. Rev. D92, 125004 (2015)) for slow neutrons, coupled to gravitational, chameleon and torsion fields to order 1/m, where m is the neutron mass. In addition to this low-energy interactions we switch on the interaction of slow neutrons with a magnetic field. We show that to linear order approximation with respect to gravit…
In the framework of spacetime with torsion and without curvature, the Dirac particle spin precession in the rotational system is studied. We write out the equivalent tetrad of rotating frame, in the polar coordinate system, through considering the relativistic factor, and the resultant equivalent metric is a flat Minkowski one. The obtained rotation-spin coupling formula can be applied to the high speed rotating case, which is consistent with the expectation.
In this paper we consider torsion gravity in the case of the Dirac field, and by going into the rest frame we study what happens when a uniform precession as well as a phase are taken into account for the spinor field; we discuss how partially conserved axial-vector currents and torsion-spin attractive potentials justify negative Takabayashi angle and energy smaller than mass: because in this instance the module goes to zero exponentially fast then we obtain stable and localized matter distributions suitable to be regarded as a description of particles.
It is found that conformally coupled induced gravity with gradient torsion gives a dilaton gravity in Riemann geometry. In the Einstein frame of the dilaton gravity the conformal symmetry is hidden and a non-vanishing cosmological constant is not plausible due to the constraint of the conformal coupling.
The influence of the torsion on the relative velocity and on the relative acceleration between particles (points) in spaces with an affine connection and a metric [$(L_n,g)$-spaces] and in (pseudo) Riemannian spaces with torsion ($U_n$-spaces) is considered. Necessary and sufficient conditions as well as only necessary and only sufficient conditions for vanishing deformation, shear, rotation and expansion are found. The notion of relative acceleration and the related to it notions of shear, rotation and expansion accelerations induced by the torsion are determined. It is shown that the kinemat…
We will consider the most general least-order derivative action for the torsional completion of gravitational backgrounds filled with left-handed and right-handed semi-spinorial fields, accounting for all parity-even as well as parity-odd contributions; we will proceed by performing the customary analysis, decomposing torsion and substituting it in terms of the semi-spinorial density currents, in order to obtain the effective action with the torsionally-induced self-interacting potentials among the chiral fermionic fields: we shall see that the resulting effective non-linear potentials will tu…
The gravitational neutrino oscillation problem is studied by considering the Dirac Hamiltonian in a Riemann-Cartan space-time and calculating the dynamical phase. Torsion contributions which depend on the spin direction of the mass eigenstates are found. These effects are of the order of Planck scales.
We extend the geometrical ideas of the spacetime deformations to study the physical foundation of the post-Riemannian geometry. To this aim, we construct the theory of 'two-step spacetime deformation' as a guiding principle. We address the theory of teleparallel gravity and construct a consistent Einstein-Cartan (EC) theory with the 'dynamical torsion'. We show that the equations of the standard EC theory, in which the equation defining torsion is the algebraic type and, in fact, no propagation of torsion is allowed, can be equivalently replaced by the set of 'modified EC equations' in which t…
The LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA collaborations (LVK) produced a catalogue containing gravitational-wave (GW) observations from the first half of the third GW observing run (O3a). This catalogue, GWTC-2.1, includes for the first time a number of \emph{exceptional} GW candidates produced from merging black-hole-binaries with unequivocally unequal component masses. Since subdominant multipole moments and spin-induced orbital precession are more likely to leave measurable imprints on the emitted GW from unequal component mass binaries, these general relativistic phenomena may now be measurable. Indeed, bot…
We couple a conformal scalar field in (2+1) dimensions to Einstein gravity with torsion. The field equations are obtained by a variational principle. We could not solve the Einstein and Cartan equations analytically. These equations are solved numerically with 4th order Runge-Kutta method. From the numerical solution, we make an ansatz for the rotation parameter in the proposed metric, which gives an analytical solution for the scalar field for asymptotic regions.
We develop a theory in which there are couplings amongst Dirac spinor, dilaton and non-Riemannian gravity and explore the nature of connection-induced dilaton couplings to gravity and Dirac spinor when the theory is reformulated in terms of the Levi-Civita connection. After presenting some exact solutions without spinors, we investigate the minimal spinor couplings to the model and in conclusion we can not find any nontrivial dilaton couplings to spinor.
We show that it is possible to explain the physical origin of jet precession in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) through the misalignment between the rotation axes of the accretion disk and of the Kerr black hole. We apply this scenario to quasars, Seyfert galaxies and also to the Galactic Center black hole Sgr A*, for which signatures of either jet or disk precession have been found. The formalism adopted is parameterized by the ratio of the precession period to the black hole mass and can be used to put constraints to the physical properties of the accretion disk as well as to the black hole sp…
FRB 180916.J0158+65 has been found to repeatedly emit fast radio bursts with the period in roughly 16 days. We propose that such periodicity comes from orbit-induced, spin precession of the emitter, which is possibly a neutron star. Depending on the mass of the companion, the binary period ranges from several hundred to thousands of seconds. Such tight binaries have a relatively short lifetime, which does not likely come from the gravitational decay of a wide binary. We comment on the relation to GW190425 and the possibility in LISA and LIGO detections.
We argue that the geodesic hypothesis based on the autoparalllels of the Levi-Civita connection may need refinement in the scalar- tensor theories of gravity. Based on a reformulation of the Brans- Dicke theory in terms of a connection with torsion determined dynamically in terms of the gradient of the Brans-Dicke scalar field, we compute the perihelion shift in the orbit of Mercury on the alternative hypothesis that its worldline is an autoparallel of a connection with torsion. If the Brans-Dicke scalar field couples significantly to matter and test particles move on such worldlines, the curr…
We consider a possible (parity conserving) interaction between the electromagnetic field $F$ and a torsion field $T^α$ of spacetime. For generic elementary torsion, gauge invariant coupling terms of lowest order fall into two classes that are both nonminimal and {\it quadratic} in torsion. These two classes are displayed explicitly. The first class of the type $\sim F T^2$ yields (undesirable) modifications of the Maxwell equations. The second class of the type $\sim F^2 T^2$ doesn't touch the Maxwell equations but rather modifies the constitutive tensor of spacetime. Such a modification can b…
We point out the existence of new effects of global spacetime expansion on local binary systems. In addition to a possible change of orbital size, there is a contribution to the precession of elliptic orbits, to be added to the well-known general relativistic effect in static spacetimes, and the eccentricity can change. Our model calculations are done using geodesics in a McVittie metric, representing a localized system in an asymptotically Robertson-Walker spacetime; we give a few numerical estimates for that case, and indicate ways in which the model should be improved.
Earlier de Sabbata and Gasperini have shown that neutrinos oscillation which gives them a mass can be induced by torsion. More recently Enqvist et al have shown that it is possible to use massive neutrinos BBN magnetic fields to seed galactic magnetic fields. Thus based on these previous investigations we present several examples of how obtaining cosmological magnetic seed fields as galactic magnetic fields from massive neutrino densities and also from the torsion obtained by Nitsch as $T\approx{10^{-24}s^{-1}}$ at the present day which yields magnetic seed field of the order of $B_{seed}\appr…
It is found that the deviation of an effective potential from the quartic form is related to the metric and vector torsion dependencies of the effective potential in the vector torsion coupled conformally induced gravity.
We use latest data from solar system planetary orbital motions to put constraints on some Galileon-induced precessional effects. Due to the Vainshtein mechanism, the Galileon-type spherically symmetric field of a monopole induces a small, screened correction proprtional to \sqrt{r} to its usual r^-1 Newtonian potential which causes a secular precession of the pericenter of a test particle. In the case of our solar system, latest data from Mars allow to constrain the magnitude of such an interaction down to α<= 0.3 level. Another Galileon-type effect which might impact solar system dynamics is …
We show that in theories of gravitation with torsion the helicity of fermion particles is not conserved and we calculate the probability of spin flip, which is related to the anti-symmetric part of affine connection. Some cosmological consequences are discussed.
The coalescence of massive black holes generates gravitational waves (GWs) that will be measurable by space-based detectors such as LISA to large redshifts. The spins of a binary's black holes have an important impact on its waveform. Specifically, geodetic and gravitomagnetic effects cause the spins to precess; this precession then modulates the waveform, adding periodic structure which encodes useful information about the binary's members. Following pioneering work by Vecchio, we examine the impact upon GW measurements of including these precession-induced modulations in the waveform model. …
We investigate in a covariant manner the spin-induced non-geodesic motion of massive spin 1/2 particles in an arbitrary gravitational field for trajectories that are initially geodesic when spin is ignored. Using the WKB approximation for the wave function in curved spacetime, we compute the O(hbar) correction to the Wigner rotation of the spin 1/2 particle, whose O(1) contribution is zero on timelike geodesics. We develop conditions for the motion of observers in which the Wigner rotation is null. For the spherically symmetric Schwarzschild metric, we consider specific examples of particle mo…
We have considered the quantum behavior of a conformally induced gravity in the minimal Riemann-Cartan space. The regularized one-loop effective potential considering the quantum fluctuations of the dilaton and the torsion fields in the Coleman-Weinberg sector gives a sensible phase transition for an inflationary phase in De Sitter space. For this effective potential, we have analyzed the semi-classical equation of motion of the dilaton field in the slow-rolling regime.
The conformal anomaly in curved spacetime with antisymmetric torsion is reconsidered, taking into account new important details. We formulate, for the first time, the covariant solution of the anomaly-induced effective action. The covariant effective action includes local terms corresponding to total derivatives in the conformal anomaly. The contribution of massless fermions to these terms is characterized by multiplicative anomaly, coming from two different choices of doubling for the spinor operator. On the other hand, the nonlocal part of anomaly-induced action is free of ambiguities and ad…
Inflation in the framework of Einstein-Cartan theory is revisited. Einstein-Cartan theory is a natural extension of the General Relativity, with non-vanishing torsion. The connection on Riemann-Cartan spacetime is only compatible with the cosmological principal for a particular form of torsion. We show this form to also be compatible with gauge invariance principle for a non-Abelian and Abelian gauge fields under a certain deviced minimal coupling procedure. We adopt an Abelian gauge field in the form of "cosmic triad". The dynamical field equations are obtained and shown to sustain cosmic inf…
In the context of the Einstein-Cartan-Dirac model, where the torsion of the space-time couples to the axial currents of the fermions, we study the effects of this quantum-gravitational interaction on a massless neutrino beam crossing through a medium with high number density of fermions at rest. We calculate the reflection amplitude and show that a specific fraction of the incident neutrinos reflects from this potential if the polarization of the medium is different from zero. We also discuss the order of magnitude of the fermionic number density in which this phenomenon is observable, in othe…
Gravitational-wave (GW) signals from coalescing compact binaries carry enormous information about the source dynamics and are an excellent tool to probe unknown astrophysics and fundamental physics. Though the updated catalog of compact binary signals reports evidence for slowly spinning systems and unequal mass binaries, the data so far cannot provide convincing proof of strongly precessing binaries. Here, we use the GW inference library parallel Bilby to compare the performance of two waveform models for measuring spin-induced orbital precession. One of the waveform models incorporates both …
Motivated by the analogy between a weak field expansion of general relativity and Maxwell's laws of electrodynamics, we explore physical consequences of a parity violating $θ$ term in gravitoelectromagnetism. This is distinct from the common gravitational $θ$ term formed as a square of the Riemann tensor. Instead it appears as a product of the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic fields in the Lagrangian, similar to the Maxwellian $θ$ term. We show that this sector can arise from a quadratic torsion term in nonlinear gravity. In analogy to the physics of topological insulators, the torsion-indu…
Recent theoretical work has shown that spin $1/2$ particles moving through unpolarized matter which sources torsion fields experience a new type of parity-even and time-reversal-odd optical potential if the matter is spinning in the lab frame. This new type of optical potential can be sought experimentally using the helicity dependence of the total cross sections for longitudinally polarized neutrons moving through a rotating cylindrical target. In combination with recent experimental constraints on short-range P--odd, T--even torsion interactions derived from polarized neutron spin rotation i…
The trace anomaly induced dynamics of the conformal factor is investigated in four-dimensional quantum gravity with torsion. The constraints for the coupling constants of torsion matter interaction are obtained in the infrared stable fixed point of the effective scalar theory.
In most theories of gravity involving torsion, the source for torsion is the intrinsic spin of matter. Since the spins of fermions are normally randomly oriented in macroscopic bodies, the torsion generated is normally negligible. However, in a recent paper, Mao et al. point out that there is a class of theories in which the angular momentum of macroscopic spinning bodies generates a significant amount of torsion. They argue that by the principle of action equals reaction, one would expect the angular momentum of test bodies to couple to a background torsion field, and therefore the precession…
