We discuss two approaches that are used frequently to describe quantum-classical hybrid system. One is the well-known mean-field theory and the other adopts a set of hybrid brackets which is a mixture of quantum commutators and classical Poisson brackets. We prove that these two approaches are equivalent.
In this paper, we study a model of quantum Markov chains that is a quantum analogue of Markov chains and is obtained by replacing probabilities in transition matrices with quantum operations. We show that this model is very suited to describe hybrid systems that consist of a quantum component and a classical one, although it has the same expressive power as another quantum Markov model proposed in the literature. Indeed, hybrid systems are often encountered in quantum information processing; for example, both quantum programs and quantum protocols can be regarded as hybrid systems. Thus, we fu…
We prove the equivalence of an arbitrary single-mode Gaussian quantum channel and a newly defined fiducial channel preceded by a phase shift and followed by a Gaussian unitary operation. This equivalence implies that the energy-constrained classical capacity of any single-mode Gaussian channel can be calculated based on this fiducial channel, which is furthermore simply realizable with a beam splitter, two identical single-mode squeezers, and a two-mode squeezer. In a large domain of parameters, we also provide an analytical expression for the Gaussian classical capacity, exploiting its additi…
Quantum backflow is an interference effect in which a matter-wave packet comprised of only plane waves with non-negative momenta exhibits negative probability flux. Here we show that this effect is mathematically equivalent to the appearance of classically-forbidden probability flux when a matter-wave packet, initially confined to a semi-infinite line, expands in free space.
Classical and quantum world views differ in peculiar ways. Understanding decisive quantum features -- for which no classical explanation exist -- and their interrelations is of foundational interest. Moreover, recognizing non-classical features carries practical significance in information processing tasks as it offers insights as to why quantum protocols work better than their classical counterparts. We focus here on two celebrated notions of non-classicality viz., negativity of P phase-space representation and entanglement in symmetric multiqubit systems. We prove that they imply each other.
A game-theoretic setting provides a mathematical basis for analysis of strategic interaction among competing agents and provides insights into both classical and quantum decision theory and questions of strategic choice. An outstanding mathematical question, is to understand the conditions under which a classical game-theoretic setting can be transformed to a quantum game, and under which conditions there is an equivalence. In this paper, we consider quantum games as those that allow non-factorizable probabilities. We discuss two approaches for obtaining a non-factorizable game and study the o…
We present a general scheme for sharing quantum secrets, and an extension to sharing classical secrets, which contain all known quantum secret sharing schemes. In this framework we show the equivalence of existence of both schemes, that is, the existence of a scheme sharing a quantum secret implies the extended classical secret sharing scheme works, and vice versa. As a consequence of this we find new schemes sharing classical secrets for arbitrary access structures. We then clarify the relationship to quantum error correction and observe several restrictions thereby imposed, which for example…
A quantum particle moving in a gravitational field may penetrate the classically forbidden region of the gravitational potential. This raises the question of whether the time of flight of a quantum particle in a gravitational field might deviate systematically from that of a classical particle due to tunnelling delay, representing a violation of the weak equivalence principle. I investigate this using a model quantum clock to measure the time of flight of a quantum particle in a uniform gravitational field, and show that a violation of the equivalence principle does not occur when the measurem…
The security of a cryptographic key that is generated by communication through a noisy quantum channel relies on the ability to distill a shorter secure key sequence from a longer insecure one. For an important class of protocols, which exploit tomographically complete measurements on entangled pairs of any dimension, we show that the noise threshold for classical advantage distillation is identical with the threshold for quantum entanglement distillation. As a consequence, the two distillation procedures are equivalent: neither offers a security advantage over the other.
Constrained Hamiltonian description of the classical limit is utilized in order to derive consistent dynamical equations for hybrid quantum-classical systems. Starting with a compound quantum system in the Hamiltonian formulation conditions for classical behavior are imposed on one of its subsystems and the corresponding hybrid dynamical equations are derived. The presented formalism suggests that the hybrid systems have properties that are not exhausted by those of quantum and classical systems.
Resource theory of quantum coherence originated like entanglement in quantum information theory. However, still now proper classification of quantum states is missing under coherence. In this work, we have provided a classification of states under local incoherent operations. We have succeeded in deriving the necessary and sufficient condition for which two pure multipartite states are equivalent under stochastic local incoherent operations and classical communications (SLICC) and local incoherent operations and classical communications (LICC). In particular, we have succeeded in characterizin…
We present a generalized tomographic quantum key distribution protocol in which the two parties share a Bell diagonal mixed state of two qubits. We show that if an eavesdropper performs a coherent measurement on many quantum ancilla states simultaneously, classical methods of secure key distillation are less effective than quantum entanglement distillation protocols. We also show that certain Bell diagonal states are resistant to any attempt of incoherent eavesdropping.
A hybrid formalism is proposed for interacting classical and quantum sytems. This formalism is mathematically consistent and reduces to standard classical and quantum mechanics in the case of no interaction. However, in the presence of interaction, the correspondence principle is violated.
We investigate new features, especially of entanglement dynamics, which arise in a quantum-classical hybrid. As a model, we study the coupling between two quantum mechanical two-level systems, i.e. two q-bits, and a classical harmonic oscillator. Their interaction is described by a hybrid coupling, in accordance with a recently developed quantum-classical hybrid theory. We discuss various situations in which entanglement of the q-bits does (not) evolve. Furthermore, we point out an experimental application in a hybrid cooling scheme and indicate topics for future study.
A canonical formulation of coupled classical-quantum dynamics is presented. The theory is named symmetric hybrid dynamics. It is proved that under some general conditions its predictions are consistent with the full quantum ones. Moreover symmetric hybrid dynamics displays a fully consistent canonical structure. Namely, it is formulated over a Lie algebra of observables, time evolution is unitary and the solution of a hybrid type Schrödinger equation. A quantization prescription from classical mechanics to hybrid dynamics is presented. The quantization map is a Lie algebra isomorphism. Finally…
We revisit quantum-classical hybrid systems of the Sudarshan type under the light of Galilean covariance. We show that these kind of hybrids cannot be given as a unitary representation of the Galilei group and at the same time conserve the total linear momentum unless the interaction term only depends on the relative canonical velocities.
In the past ten-fifteen years, stochastic models of continuous wave function collapse were being proposed to describe the continuous emergence of classicality from quantum. We advocate that the hybrid dynamics of canonically coupled quantum and classical systems is a more basic concept. Continuous collapse formalisms are obtained as special cases. To illustrate our claim we show how von Neumann collapse follows from hybrid dynamical equations.
We give a general overview of various flavors of the equivalence principle in classical and quantum physics, with special emphasis on the so-called weak equivalence principle, and contrast its validity in mechanics versus field theory. We also discuss its generalisation to a theory of quantum gravity. Our analysis suggests that only the strong equivalence principle can be considered fundamental enough to be generalised to a quantum gravity context, since all other flavors of equivalence principle hold only approximately already at the classical level.
Using the example of the harmonic oscillator, we illustrate the use of hybrid dynamical brackets in analyzing quantum-classical interaction. We only assume that a hybrid dynamical bracket exists, is bilinear, and reduces to the pure quantum/classical bracket when acting on pure quantum/classical variables. Any hybrid bracket obeying these natural requirements will produce the same dynamics for pure classical or quantum variables, given a hybrid Hamiltonian. Backreaction is manifested in the evolution of a nonvanishing commutator between classical variables. The more massive the classical syste…
A hybrid classical-quantum approach for the solution of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using Walsh-Hadamard basis functions is proposed. Central to this hybrid approach is the computation of the Walsh-Hadamard transform of arbitrary vectors, which is enabled in our framework using quantum Hadamard gates along with state preparation, shifting, scaling, and measurement operations. It is estimated that the proposed hybrid classical-quantum approach for the Walsh-Hadamard transform of an input vector of size N results in a considerably lower computational complexity (O(N) operations) co…
Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms have drawn much attention because of their potential to realize the "quantum advantage" in noisy, intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Here we introduce QRunes, a cross-platform quantum language for hybrid programming. QRunes can be compiled to various host backends, allowing the user to write portable quantum subprograms. The hybrid programming is based on the type system, which is used to decide where a statement should be run. We also introduce Qurator, a VSCode plugin that has QRunes language support and two host backends.
Classical Hamiltonian system of a point moving on a sphere of fixed radius is shown to emerge from the constrained evolution of quantum spin. The constrained quantum evolution corresponds to an appropriate coarse-graining of the quantum states into equivalence classes, and forces the equivalence classes to evolve as single units representing the classical states. The coarse-grained quantum spin with the constrained evolution in the limit of the large spin becomes indistinguishable from the classical system.
An equivalence between the $\mathrm{Schr\ddot{o}dinger}$ dynamics of a quantum system with a finite number of basis states and a classical dynamics is presented. The equivalence is an isomorphism that connects in univocal way both dynamical systems. We treat the particular case of neutral kaons and found a class of electric networks uniquely related to the kaon system finding the complete map between the matrix elements of the effective Hamiltonian of kaons and those elements of the classical dynamics of the networks. As a consequence, the relevant $ε$ parameter that measures CP violation in t…
Hydrogen atom is studied as a quantum-classical hybrid system, where the proton is treated as a classical object while the electron is regarded as a quantum object. We use a well known mean-field approach to describe this hybrid hydrogen atom; the resulting dynamics for the electron and the proton is compared to their full quantum dynamics. The electron dynamics in the hybrid description is found to be only marginally different from its full quantum counterpart. The situation is very different for the proton: in the hybrid description, the proton behaves like a free particle; in the fully quan…
A set of necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the equivalence of an arbitrary pure state and a graph state on n qubits under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC), using the stabilizer formalism. Because all stabilizer states are equivalent to a graph state by local unitary transformations, these conditions constitute a classical algorithm for the determination of SLOCC-equivalence of pure states and stabilizer states. This algorithm provides a distinct advantage over the direct solution of the SLOCC-equivalence condition for an unknown invertible local…
Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms are central to much of the current research in quantum computing, particularly when considering the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era, with a number of experimental demonstrations having already been performed. In this perspective, we discuss in a very broad sense what it means for an algorithm to be hybrid quantum-classical. We first explore this concept very directly, by building a definition based on previous work in abstraction/representation theory, arguing that what makes an algorithm hybrid is not directly how it is run (or how many classica…
Quantum circuits which perform integer arithmetic could potentially outperform their classical counterparts. In this paper, a quantum circuit is considered which performs a specific computational pattern on classically represented integers to accelerate the computation. Such a hybrid circuit could be embedded in a conventional computer architecture as a quantum device or accelerator. In particular, a quantum multiply-add circuit (QMAC) using a Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) is proposed which can perform the calculation on conventional integers faster than its conventional counterpart. Whereas…
General statistical ensembles in the Hamiltonian formulation of hybrid quantum-classical systems are analyzed. It is argued that arbitrary probability densities on the hybrid phase space must be considered as the class of possible physically distinguishable statistical ensembles of hybrid systems. Nevertheless, statistical operators associated with the hybrid system and with the quantum subsystem can be consistently defined. Dynamical equations for the statistical operators representing the mixed states of the hybrid system and its quantum subsystem are derived and analyzed. In particular, the…
We present a hybrid quantum classical neural network that can be trained to perform electronic structure calculation and generate potential energy curves of simple molecules. The method is based on the combination of parameterized quantum circuits and measurements. With unsupervised training, the neural network can generate electronic potential energy curves based on training at certain bond lengths. To demonstrate the power of the proposed new method, we present results of using the quantum-classical hybrid neural network to calculate ground state potential energy curves of simple molecules s…
The weak equivalence principle (WEP) in the quantum regime has been the subject of many studies with a broad range of approach to the problem. Here we tackle the problem anew through the time of arrival (TOA) operator approach by constructing the time of arrival operator for a non-relativistic and structureless particle that is projected upward in a uniform gravitational field with an intended arrival point below the classical turning point. The TOA-operator is constructed under the constraint that the inertial and gravitational masses are equivalent, and that Galilean invariance is preserved.…
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for arbitrary multi--mode (pure or mixed) Gaussian states to be equivalent under Gaussian local unitary operations. To do so, we introduce a standard form for Gaussian states, which has the properties that (i) every state can be transformed into its standard form via Gaussian local unitaries and (ii) it is unique and (iii) it can be easily computed. Thus, two states are equivalent under Gaussian local unitaries iff their standard form coincides. We explicitly derive the standard form for two-- and three--mode Gaussian pure states. We then investiga…
One of the central foundational questions of physics is to identify what makes a system quantum as opposed to classical. One seminal notion of classicality of a quantum system is the existence of a non-contextual hidden variable model as introduced in the early work by Bell, Kochen and Specker. In quantum optics, the non-negativity of the Wigner function is a ubiquitous notion of classicality. In this work we establish an equivalence between these two concepts. In particular, we show that any non-contextual hidden variable model for Gaussian quantum optics has an alternative non-negative Wigne…
We describe a new implementation of the Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm which relies on the fact that the polarization states of classical light beams can be cloned. We explore the possibility of computing with waves and discuss a classical optical model capable of implementing any algorithm (on $n$ qubits) that does not involve entanglement. The Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm (with a suitably modified oracle), wherein a hidden $n$ bit vector is discovered by one oracle query as against $n$ oracle queries required classically, belongs to this category. In our scheme, the modified oracle is also cap…
Deep learning has been shown to be able to recognize data patterns better than humans in specific circumstances or contexts. In parallel, quantum computing has demonstrated to be able to output complex wave functions with a few number of gate operations, which could generate distributions that are hard for a classical computer to produce. Here we propose a hybrid quantum-classical convolutional neural network (QCCNN), inspired by convolutional neural networks (CNNs) but adapted to quantum computing to enhance the feature mapping process. QCCNN is friendly to currently noisy intermediate-scale …
Both classical and quantum mechanics assume that physical laws are invariant under changes in the way that the world is labeled. This Principle of Decompositional Equivalence is formalized, and shown to forbid finite experimental demonstrations that given pointer states |p1> and |p2> refer to the same physical system S. It is then shown that any extra-theoretical assumption that given pointer states |p1> and |p2> with indistinguishable coefficients in a Schmidt basis for the universe refer to the same physical system S is stronger than the assumption of classicality. Standard interpretations o…
Berry phase, which had been discovered for more than two decades, provides us a very deep insight on the geometric structure of quantum mechanics. Its classical counterpart--Hannay's angle is defined if closed curves of action variables return to the same curves in phase space after a time evolution. In this paper, we study the Berry phase and Hannay's angle in a quantum-classical hybrid system under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. By quantum-classical hybrid system, we denote a composite system consists of a quantum subsystem and a classical subsystem. The effects of subsystem-subsystem c…
While efficient algorithms are known for solving many important problems related to groups, no efficient algorithm is known for determining whether two arbitrary groups are isomorphic. The particular case of 2-nilpotent groups, a special type of central extension, is widely believed to contain the essential hard cases. However, looking specifically at central extensions, the natural formulation of being "the same" is not isomorphism but rather "equivalence," which requires an isomorphism to preserves the structure of the extension. In this paper, we show that equivalence of central extensions …
The crucial feature of a memoryless stochastic process is that any information about its state can only decrease as the system evolves. Here we show that such a decrease of information is equivalent to the underlying stochastic evolution being divisible. The main result, which holds for both classical and quantum stochastic processes, rely on a quantum version of the so-called Blackwell-Sherman-Stein theorem in classical statistics.
An open problem in communication complexity proposed by several authors is to prove that for every Boolean function f, the task of computing f(x AND y) has polynomially related classical and quantum bounded-error complexities. We solve a variant of this question. For every f, we prove that the task of computing, on input x and y, both of the quantities f(x AND y) and f(x OR y) has polynomially related classical and quantum bounded-error complexities. We further show that the quantum bounded-error complexity is polynomially related to the classical deterministic complexity and the block sensiti…
To investigate the effect of quantum coherence on electronic energy transfer, which is the subject of current interest in photosynthesis, we solve the problem of transport for the simplest model of an aggregate of monomers interacting through dipole-dipole forces using both quantum and classical dynamics. We conclude that for realistic coupling strengths quantum and classical coherent transport are identical. This is demonstrated by numerical calculations for a linear chain and for the photosynthetic Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex
The equivalence between classical epidemic model and nondissipative and dissipative quantum tight-binding model is derived. Classical epidemic model can reproduce the quantum entanglement emerging in the case of electrostatically coupled qubits described by von-Neumann entropy both in non-dissipative and dissipative case. The obtained results shows that quantum mechanical phenomena might be almost entirely simulated by classical statistical model. It includes the quantum like entanglement and superposition of states. Therefore coupled epidemic models expressed by classical systems in terms of …
We reappraise some of the hybrid classical-quantum models proposed in the literature with the goal of retrieving some of their common characteristics. In particular, first, we analyze in detail the Peres-Terno argument regarding the inconsistency of hybrid quantizations of the Sudarshan type. We show that to accept such hybrid formalism entails the necessity of dealing with additional degrees of freedom beyond those in the straight complete quantization of the system. Second, we recover a similar enlargement of degrees of freedom in the so-called statistical hybrid models. Finally, we use Wign…
After formulating a no-go theorem for perfect quantum-classical hybrid systems, a new consistency requirement based on standard statistical considerations is noted. It is shown that such requirement is not fulfilled by the mean-field approach, nor by the statistical ensemble approach. Further unusual features of the latter scheme are pointed out.
Privacy amplification (PA) is an indispensable component in classical and quantum cryptography. Error correction (EC) and data compression (DC) algorithms are also indispensable in classical and quantum information theory. We here study these three algorithms (PA, EC, and DC) in the presence of quantum side information, and show that they all become equivalent in the one-shot scenario. As an application of this equivalence, we take previously known security bounds of PA, and translate them into coding theorems for EC and DC which have not been obtained previously. Further, we apply these resul…
The extraction of classical degrees of freedom in quantum mechanics is studied in the stochastic variational method. By using this classicalization, a hybrid model constructed from quantum and classical variables (quantum-classical hybrids) is derived. In this procedure, conservation laws such as energy are maintained, and Ehrenfest's theorem is still satisfied with modification. The criterion for the applicability of quantum-classical hybrids is also discussed.
A recent concept in theoretical physics, motivated in string duality and M-theory, is the notion that not all quantum theories arise from quantising a classical system. Also, a given quantum model may possess more than just one classical limit. In view of these developments, we analyse some general properties that quantum mechanics must satisfy, if it is not to be formulated as a quantisation of a given classical mechanics. Instead, our approach to quantum mechanics is modelled on a statement that is close in spirit to the equivalence principle of general relativity, thus bearing a strong rese…
