An equivalence between the $\mathrm{Schr\ddot{o}dinger}$ dynamics of a quantum system with a finite number of basis states and a classical dynamics is presented. The equivalence is an isomorphism that connects in univocal way both dynamical systems. We treat the particular case of neutral kaons and found a class of electric networks uniquely related to the kaon system finding the complete map between the matrix elements of the effective Hamiltonian of kaons and those elements of the classical dynamics of the networks. As a consequence, the relevant $ε$ parameter that measures CP violation in the kaon system is completely determined in terms of network parameters.
In relation with experiments on correlated kaons at phi-factories, it is shown that the request of complete positivity is necessary in any physically consistent description of neutral kaons as open quantum systems.
A quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity principle and interferometric duality is discussed and applied to the neutral kaon system. Recent measurements by the CPLEAR Collaboration can be easily interpreted in terms of ``neutral kaon interferometry'' illustrating and confirming those basic principles of quantum mechanics.
Quantum marking and quantum erasure are discussed for the neutral kaon system. Contrary to other two-level systems, strangeness and lifetime of a neutral kaon state can be alternatively measured via an "active" or a "passive" procedure. This offers new quantum erasure possibilities. In particular, the operation of a quantum eraser in the "delayed choice" mode is clearly illustrated.
We briefly illustrate a few tests of quantum mechanics which can be performed with entangled neutral kaon pairs at a Phi-factory. This includes a quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity principle, the quantum eraser phenomenon and various forms of Bell inequalities.

We consider departures from hamiltonian dynamics in the evolution of neutral kaons due to their interactions with environment that generate entanglement among them. We propose a phenomenological model of stochastic re-scattering and estimate the coefficients of the effective hamiltonian and decoherence terms. Finally we analyze the interplay between the weak interaction and matter effects and propose the observables suitable to measure the matter characteristics of CPT violation and decoherence.
For the entangled neutral kaon system we formulate a Bell inequality sensitive to CP violation in mixing. Via this Bell inequality we obtain a bound on the leptonic CP asymmetry which is violated by experimental data. Furthermore, we connect the Bell inequality with a decoherence approach and find a lower bound on the decoherence parameter which practically corresponds to Furry's hypothesis.
The aim of this contribution is to illustrate two basic aspects of quantum mechanics applied to the neutral kaon system. We first describe a recent quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity principle for free--space evolution of single kaons and entangled kaon pairs. We then show that the neutral kaon system is also suitable for an optimal demonstration of the ``quantum eraser'', including its operation in the ``delayed choice'' mode. In our discussions, strangeness oscillations play the role of the traditional interference pattern linked to wave--like behaviour. The role of the two i…
We present some general considerations on possible experimental tests of Bell's locality in the neutral kaon system, and comment on the recent literature on the topic.
The generalized dynamics describing the propagation of neutral kaons in randomly fluctuating media is derived and analyzed. It takes into account possible matter-induced effects leading to loss of phase coherence and dissipation. The study of selected neutral kaon observables indicates that these non-standard effects are amenable to a direct experimental analysis.
We extend the use of Bell-inequalities to $Φ\to K^0 \bar{K^0}$ decays by exploiting analogies and differences to the well-known and experimentally verified singlet-spin case. Contrasting with other analyses, our Bell-inequalities are violated by quantum mechanics and can strictly be derived from local realistic theories. In principle, quantum mechanics could then be tested using unstable, oscillating states governed by a CP-violating Hamiltonian.
Entangled K0 anti-K0 pairs are shown to be suitable to discuss extensions and tests of Bohr's complementarity principle through the quantum marking and quantum erasure techniques suggested by M. O. Scully and K. Druehl [Phys. Rev. A 25, 2208 (1982)]. Strangeness oscillations play the role of the traditional interference pattern linked to wave-like behaviour, whereas the distinct propagation in free space of the K_S and K_L components mimics the two possible interferometric paths taken by particle-like objects.
The Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI) as a temporal analogue of Bell's inequality, derived using the notion of realism, is applied in a hitherto unexplored context involving the weak interaction induced two-state oscillations of decaying neutral kaons and neutrinos. The maximum violation of LGI obtained from the quantum mechanical results is significantly higher for the oscillating neutrinos compared to that for the kaons. Interestingly, the effect of CP non-invariance for the kaon oscillation is to enhance this violation while, for neutrinos, it is sensitive to the value of the mixing parameter.
The neutral Kaon system has both CP violation in the mass matrix and a non-vanishing lifetime difference in the width matrix. This leads to an effective Hamiltonian which is not a normal operator, with incompatible (non-commuting) masses and widths. In the Weisskopf-Wigner Approach (WWA), by diagonalizing the entire Hamiltonian, the unphysical non-orthogonal "stationary" states $K_{L,S}$ are obtained. These states have complex eigenvalues whose real (imaginary) part does not coincide with the eigenvalues of the mass (width) matrix. In this work we describe the system as an open Lindblad-type q…
We propose the use of entangled pairs of neutral kaons, considered as a promising tool to close the well known loopholes affecting generic Bell's inequality tests, in a specific Hardy-type experiment. Hardy's contradiction without inequalities between Local Realism and Quantum Mechanics can be translated into a feasible experiment by requiring ideal detection efficiencies for only one of the observables to be alternatively measured. Neutral kaons are near to fulfil this requirement and therefore to close the efficiency loophole.
Testing quantum foundations for systems in high energy physics gets currently more and more attention e.g. witnessed for entangled neutral K-mesons by the approved programme of the KLOE collaboration at the accelerator facility DAPHNE (Frascati, Italy). We focus on this quantum system in high energy physics and discuss two topics, Bell inequalities and the kaonic quantum eraser, and show how the neutral kaon system differs from systems of ordinary matter and light. In detail, we show a relation of the imbalance of matter and antimatter to the violation of a Bell inequality and discuss another …
Neutral kaons are unique quantum systems to show some of the most puzzling peculiarities of quantum mechanics. Here we focus on a quantitative version of Bohr's complementary principle and on quantum marking and eraser concepts. In detail we show that neutral kaons (1) are kind of double slit devices encapsulating Bohr's complementarity principle in a simple and transparent way, and (2) offer marking and eraser options which are not afforded by other quantum systems and which can be performed at the DAPHNE machine.
In light of recent exciting progress in building up quantum computing facilities based on both optical and cold-atom techniques, the algorithms for quantum simulations of particle-physics systems are in rapid progress. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for simulating the non-unitary time evolution of neutral-kaon oscillations $K^0 \leftrightarrow \overline{K}^0$, with or without CP conservation, on the quantum computers provided by the IBM company. The essential strategy is to realize the time-evolution operator with basic quantum gates and an extra qubit corresponding to some e…
In this letter we discuss entanglement properties of neutral kaons systems and their use for testing local realism. In particular we show that, as previous proposals, also a scheme recently suggested for performing a test of hidden variable theories against standard quantum mechanics cannot be conclusive.
We describe a scheme of stochastic implementations of quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping in terms of neutral kaons. In this scheme, the kaon whose state is to be teleported collides with one of the two entangled kaons in an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state. Subsequent detection of the outgoing particles of the collision completes the two-qubit projection on Alice side. There appear novel features, which connects quantum information science with fundamental laws of particle physics.
In bipartite quantum systems, entanglement correlations between the parties exerts direct influence in the phenomenon of wave-particle duality. This effect has been quantitatively analyzed in the context of two qubits by M. Jakob and J. Bergou [Optics Communications 283(5) (2010) 827]. Employing a description of the $K$-meson propagation in free space where its weak decay states are included as a second party, we study here this effect in the kaon-antikaon oscillations. We show that a new quantitative "triality" relation holds, similar to the one considered by Jakob and Bergou. In our case, it…
Using the vehicle of resolving an apparent paradox, a discussion of quantum interference is presented. The understanding of a number of different physical phenomena can be unified, in this context. These range from the neutral kaon system to massive neutrinos, not to mention quantum beats, Rydberg wave packets, and neutron gravity.
Quantum interference effects between past and future events (neutral kaon transitions, including CP violating decays) are discussed for entangled kaon pairs produced through $ϕ\to K^0 \bar{K^0}$ in $ϕ$-factories. Contrasting with the exciting conclusions of other recent analyses, we predict the inexistence of such an observable effect.
We begin with a discussion of the general form and general CP-- and CPT-- transformation properties of the Lee--Oehme--Yang (LOY) effective Hamiltonian for the neutral kaon complex. Next, the properties of the exact effective Hamiltonian for this complex are discussed. Using the Khalfin Theorem we show that the diagonal matrix elements of the effective Hamiltonian governing the time evolution in the subspace of states of an unstable particle and its antiparticle need not be equal at for t > t_0 (t_0 is the instant of creation of the pair) when the total system under consideration is CPT invari…
We have shown that it is possible to formulate the consistent and probability-preserving description of the $CP$-symmetry-violating evolution of a system of decaying particles. This has been done within the framework of quantum mechanics of open systems. This approach allows the description of both the exponential decay and flavour oscillations. We have solved explicitly the Kossakowski-Lindblad master equation for a system of particles with violated $CP$ symmetry and found the evolution of _any_ observable bilinear in creation and annihilation operators. The choice of a concrete observable ca…
The neutral Kaon system is used to test the quantum theory of resonance scattering and decay phenomena. The two dimensional Lee-Oehme-Yang theory with complex Hamiltonian is obtained by truncating the complex basis vector expansion of the exact theory in Rigged Hilbert space. This can be done for K_1 and K_2 as well as for K_S and K_L, depending upon whether one chooses the (self-adjoint, semi-bounded) Hamiltonian as commuting or non-commuting with CP. As an unexpected curiosity one can show that the exact theory (without truncation) predicts long-time 2 pion decays of the neutral Kaon system …
