We construct a model structure on simplicial profinite sets such that the homotopy groups carry a natural profinite structure. This yields a rigid profinite completion functor for spaces and pro-spaces. One motivation is the étale homotopy theory of schemes in which higher profinite étale homotopy groups fit well with the étale fundamental group which is always profinite. We show that the profinite étale topological realization functor is a good object in several respects.
For a profinite group, we construct a model structure on profinite spaces and profinite spectra with a continuous action. This yields descent spectral sequences for the homotopy groups of homotopy fixed point space and for stable homotopy groups of homotopy orbit spaces. Our main example is the Galois action on profinite étale topological types of varieties over a field. One motivation is to understand Grothendieck's section conjecture in terms of homotopy fixed points.
For a log scheme locally of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$, a natural candidate for its profinite homotopy type is the profinite completion of its Kato-Nakayama space. Alternatively, one may consider the profinite homotopy type of the underlying topological stack of its infinite root stack. Finally, for a log scheme not necessarily over $\mathbb{C}$, another natural candidate is the profinite étale homotopy type of its infinite root stack. We prove that, for a fine saturated log scheme locally of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$, these three notions agree. In particular, we construct a comparison …
We complete the program, initiated in [6], to compare the many different possible definitions of the underlying homotopy type of a log scheme. We show that, up to profinite completion, they all yield the same result, and thus arrive at an unambiguous definition of the profinite homotopy type of a log scheme. Specifically, in [6], we define this to be the profinite étale homotopy type of the infinite root stack, and show that, over $\mathbb{C},$ this agrees up to profinite completion with the Kato-Nakayama space. Other possible candidates are the profinite shape of the Kummer étale site $X_{\mb…
In this paper, we prove that the group of homotopy automorphisms of the profinite completion of the operad of little $2$-disks is isomorphic to the profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group. In particular, the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ acts faithfully on the profinite completion of $E_2$ in the homotopy category of profinite weak operads.
Let E be a k-local profinite G-Galois extension of an E_infty-ring spectrum A (in the sense of Rognes). We show that E may be regarded as producing a discrete G-spectrum. Also, we prove that if E is a profaithful k-local profinite extension which satisfies certain extra conditions, then the forward direction of Rognes's Galois correspondence extends to the profinite setting. We show the function spectrum F_A((E^hH)_k, (E^hK)_k) is equivalent to the homotopy fixed point spectrum ((E[[G/H]])^hK)_k where H and K are closed subgroups of G. Applications to Morava E-theory are given, including showi…
We study simplicial profinite groups with a view towards applications in profinite combinatorial group theory. This approach provides a natural framework to the concept of pro-$\mathfrak{C}$-presentation of a pro-$\mathfrak{C}$-group $G$ as a 1-truncation of its free simplicial pro-$\mathfrak{C}$-resolution. The category of simplicial pro-$\mathfrak{C}$-groups has a closed simplicial model category structure. This yields a possibility to define some old and new derived functors as left Quillen derived functors from this simplicial model category. When $\mathfrak{C}$ is L-groups, than may const…
If K is a discrete group and Z is a K-spectrum, then the homotopy fixed point spectrum Z^{hK} is Map_*(EK_+, Z)^K, the fixed points of a familiar expression. Similarly, if G is a profinite group and X is a discrete G-spectrum, then X^{hG} is often given by (H_{G,X})^G, where H_{G,X} is a certain explicit construction given by a homotopy limit in the category of discrete G-spectra. Thus, in each of two common equivariant settings, the homotopy fixed point spectrum is equal to the fixed points of an explicit object in the ambient equivariant category. We enrich this pattern by proving in a preci…
Let $k$ be a field with separable closure $\bar{k}\supset k$, and let $X$ be a qcqs $k$-scheme. We use the theory of profinite Galois categories developed by Barwick-Glasman-Haine to provide a quick conceptual proof that the sequences \begin{equation*} Π_{<\infty}^{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}(X_{\bar{k}}) \to Π_{<\infty}^{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}(X) \to \mathrm{BGal}(\bar{k}/k) \qquad \text{and} \qquad \widehatΠ{}_{\infty}^{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}(X_{\bar{k}}) \to \widehatΠ{}_{\infty}^{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}(X) \to \mathrm{BGal}(\bar{k}/k) \end{equation*} of protruncated and profinite étale homotopy types are…
We construct a stable model structure on profinite symmetric spectra with a continuous action of an arbitrary profinite group. This provides a natural framework for a new construction of homotopy fixed point spectra and of homotopy fixed point spectral sequences for the action of the extended Morava stabilizer group on Lubin-Tate spectra. These continuous homotopy fixed points are canonically equivalent to the homotopy fixed points of Devinatz and Hopkins but have a drastically simplified construction.
For a profinite group $G$, let $(\text{-})^{hG}$, $(\text{-})^{h_dG}$, and $(\text{-})^{h'G}$ denote continuous homotopy fixed points for profinite $G$-spectra, discrete $G$-spectra, and continuous $G$-spectra (coming from towers of discrete $G$-spectra), respectively. We establish some connections between the first two notions, and by using Postnikov towers, for $K \vartriangleleft_c G$ (a closed normal subgroup), give various conditions for when the iterated homotopy fixed points $(X^{hK})^{hG/K}$ exist and are $X^{hG}$. For the Lubin-Tate spectrum $E_n$ and $G <_c G_n$, the extended Morava …
A new approach to étale homotopy theory is presented which applies to a much broader class of objects than previously existing approaches, namely it applies not only to all schemes (without any local Noetherian hypothesis), but also to arbitrary higher stacks on the étale site of such schemes, and in particular to all algebraic stacks. This approach also produces a more refined invariant, namely a pro-object in the infinity category of spaces, rather than in the homotopy category. We prove a profinite comparison theorem at this level of generality, which states that if $\mathcal{X}$ is an arbi…
We prove that if G is the circle group or a profinite group, then the all of the homotopical information of the category of rational G-spectra is captured by triangulated structure of the rational G-equivariant stable homotopy category. That is, for G profinite or S1, the rational G-equivariant stable homotopy category is rigid. For the case of profinite groups this rigidity comes from an intrinsic formality statement, so we carefully relate the notion of intrinsic formality of a differential graded algebra to rigidity.
In this paper, we develop the theory of equivariant motivic homotopy theory, both unstable and stable. While our original interest was in the case of profinite group actions on smooth schemes, we discuss our results in as broad a setting as possible so as to be applicable in a variety of contexts, for example to the case of smooth group scheme actions on schemes that are not necessarily smooth. We also discuss how ${\mathbb A}^1$-localization behaves with respect to mod-$\ell$-completion, where $\ell$ is a fixed prime.
An old theorem of Charney and Lee says that the classifying space of the category of stable nodal topological surfaces and isotopy classes of degenerations has the same rational homology as the Deligne-Mumford compactification. We give an integral refinement: the classifying space of the Charney-Lee category actually has the same homotopy type as the moduli stack of stable curves, and the etale homotopy type of the moduli stack is equivalent to the profinite completion of the classifying space of the Charney-Lee category.
Early in the history of higher homotopy algebra, it was realized that Massey products are homotopy invariants in a special sense, but it was the work of Tornike Kadeisvili that showed they were but a shadow of an A-infinity-structure on the homology of a differential graded algebra. Here we relate his work to that of Victor Gugenheim and K.T. (Chester) Chen. This paper is a personal tribute to Tornike and the Georgian school of homotopy theory as well as to Gugenheim and Chen, who unfortunately are not with us to appreciate this convergence.
We extend the theory of equivariant orthogonal spectra from finite groups to profinite groups, and more generally from compact Lie groups to compact Hausdorff groups. The G-homotopy theory is "pieced together" from the G/U-homotopy theories for suitable quotient groups G/U of G; a motivation is the way continuous group cohomology of a profinite group is built out of the cohomology of its finite quotient groups. In the model category of equivariant spectra Postnikov towers are studied from a general perspective. We introduce pro-G-spectra and construct various model structures on them. A key pr…
Let G be a profinite group, {X_alpha}_alpha a cofiltered diagram of discrete G-spectra, and Z a spectrum with trivial G-action. We show how to define the homotopy fixed point spectrum F(Z, holim_alpha X_alpha)^{hG} and that when G has finite virtual cohomological dimension (vcd), it is equivalent to F(Z, holim_alpha (X_alpha)^{hG}). With these tools, we show that the K(n)-local Spanier-Whitehead dual is always a homotopy fixed point spectrum, a well-known Adams-type spectral sequence is actually a descent spectral sequence, and, for a sufficiently nice k-local profinite G-Galois extension E, w…
We show that the group of homotopy automorphisms of the profinite completion of the genus zero surface operad is isomorphic to the (profinite) Grothendieck-Teichmüller group. Using a result of Drummond-Cole, we deduce that the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group acts nontrivially on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,\bullet+1}$, the operad of stable curves of genus zero. As a second application, we give an alternative proof that the framed little 2-disks operad is formal.
We review the shape theory of $\infty$-topoi, and relate it with the usual cohomology of locally constant sheaves. Additionally, a new localization of profinite spaces is defined which allows us to extend the étale realization functor of Isaksen. We apply these ideas to define an étale homotopy type functor $\mathrm{\acute{e}t}(\mathcal{X})$ for Berkovich's non-archimedean analytic spaces $\mathcal{X}$ over a complete non-archimedean field $K$ and prove some properties of the construction. We compare the étale homotopy types coming from Tate's rigid spaces, Huber's adic spaces, and rigid model…
The theory of condensed mathematics by Dustin Clausen and Peter Scholze claims that topological spaces should be replaced by the definition of condensed sets. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate in which way the theory of homotopy groups on topological spaces can be extended to the theory of condensed sets. We show that there exist functors from the category of condensed sets to the category of pro-groups, s.t. restriction to CW-spaces coincides with the ordinary notion of homotopy groups on topological spaces. These functors can be extended to the $\infty$-categories of condensed…
Let G be a non-finite profinite group and let G-Sets_{df} be the canonical site of finite discrete G-sets. Then the category R^+_G, defined by Devinatz and Hopkins, is the category obtained by considering G-Sets_{df} together with the profinite G-space G itself, with morphisms being continuous G-equivariant maps. We show that R^+_G is a site when equipped with the pretopology of epimorphic covers. Also, we explain why the associated topology on R^+_G is not subcanonical, and hence, not canonical. We note that, since R^+_G is a site, there is automatically a model category structure on the cate…
To a "stable homotopy theory" (a presentable, symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category), we naturally associate a category of finite étale algebra objects and, using Grothendieck's categorical machine, a profinite group that we call the Galois group. We then calculate the Galois groups in several examples. For instance, we show that the Galois group of the periodic $\mathbf{E}_\infty$-algebra of topological modular forms is trivial and that the Galois group of $K(n)$-local stable homotopy theory is an extended version of the Morava stabilizer group. We also describe the Galois group of the …
When G is a profinite group and H and K are closed subgroups, with H normal in K, it is not known, in general, how to form the iterated homotopy fixed point spectrum (Z^{hH})^{hK/H}, where Z is a continuous G-spectrum and all group actions are to be continuous. However, we show that, if G=G_n, the extended Morava stabilizer group, and Z=L_{K(n)}(E_n \wedge X), where L_{K(n)} is Bousfield localization with respect to Morava K-theory, E_n is the Lubin-Tate spectrum, and X is any spectrum with trivial G_n-action, then the iterated homotopy fixed point spectrum can always be constructed. Also, we …
Let $G$ be a profinite group, $X$ a discrete $G$-spectrum with trivial action, and $X^{hG}$ the continuous homotopy fixed points. For any $N \trianglelefteq_o G$ ("$o$" for open), $X = X^N$ is a $G/N$-spectrum with trivial action. We construct a zigzag $\text{colim}\,_N \,X^{hG/N} \buildrelΦ\over\longrightarrow \text{colim}\,_N \,(X^{hN})^{hG/N} \buildrelΨ\over\longleftarrow X^{hG}$, where $Ψ$ is a weak equivalence. When $Φ$ is a weak equivalence, this zigzag gives an interesting model for $X^{hG}$ (for example, its Spanier-Whitehead dual is $\text{holim}\,_N \,F(X^{hG/N}, S^0)$). We prove tha…
This is the first in a series of papers devoted to foundations of topological stacks. We begin developing a homotopy theory for topological stacks along the lines of classical homotopy theory of topological spaces. In this paper we go as far as introducing the homotopy groups and establishing their basic properties. We also develop a Galois theory of covering spaces for a (locally connected semilocally 1-connected) topological stack. Built into the Galois theory is a method for determining the stacky structure (i.e., inertia groups) of covering stacks. As a consequence, we get for free a chara…
In this paper we develop the definition of a global orthogonal spectrum and its unitary version. It relates $G-$equivariant spectra by equivariant weak equivalence in a coherent way. This category of global spectra has a model structure Quillen equivalent to the global model structure on orthogonal spectra. We also show that there is a large family of equivariant cohomology theories, including quasi-elliptic cohomology, that can be globalized in the new context. Starting from one global ring spectrum, we can construct infinitely many distinct global ring spectra. Moreover, in light of the resu…
Generalized étale homotopy pro-groups $π_1^{\ets}(\mc{C}, x)$ associated to pointed connected small Grothendieck sites $(\mc{C}, x)$ are defined and their relationship to Galois theory and the theory of pointed torsors for discrete groups is explained. Applications include new rigorous proofs of some folklore results around $π_1^{\ets}(\et{X}, x)$, a description of Grothendieck's short exact sequence for Galois descent in terms of pointed torsor trivializations, and a new étale van Kampen theorem which gives a simple statement about a pushout square of pro-groups that works for covering famili…
Spectral Mackey functors are homotopy-coherent versions of ordinary Mackey functors as defined by Dress. We show that they can be described as excisive functors on a suitable infinity-category, and we use this to show that universal examples of these objects are given by algebraic K-theory. More importantly, we introduce the unfurling of certain families of Waldhausen infinity-categories bound together with suitable adjoint pairs of functors; this construction completely solves the homotopy coherence problem that arises when one wishes to study the algebraic K-theory of such objects as spectra…
In this paper, we construct a refined, relative version of the étale realization functor of motivic spaces, first studied by Isaksen and Schmidt. Their functor goes from the $\infty$-category of motivic spaces over a base scheme $S$ to the $\infty$-category of $p$-profinite spaces, where $p$ is a prime which is invertible in all residue fields of $S$. In the first part of this paper, we refine the target of this functor to an $\infty$-category where $p$-profinite spaces is a further completion. Roughly speaking, this $\infty$-category is generated under cofiltered limits by those spaces whose …
Let $n \geq 1$, $p$ a prime, and $T(n)$ any representative of the Bousfield class of the telescope $v_n^{-1}F(n)$ of a finite type $n$ complex. Also, let $E_n$ be the Lubin-Tate spectrum, $K(E_n)$ its algebraic $K$-theory spectrum, and $G_n$ the extended Morava stabilizer group, a profinite group. Motivated by an Ausoni-Rognes conjecture, we show that there are two spectral sequences \[{^{I}}\mspace{-3mu}E_2^{s,t} \Longrightarrow π_{t-s}((L_{T(n+1)}K(E_n))^{hG_n}) \Longleftarrow {^{II}}\mspace{-2mu}E_2^{s,t}\] with common abutment $π_\ast(-)$ of the continuous homotopy fixed points of $L_{T(n+…
