This is the first in a series of papers devoted to foundations of topological stacks.
We begin developing a homotopy theory for topological stacks along the lines of classical homotopy theory of topological spaces. In this paper we go as far as introducing the homotopy groups and establishing their basic properties. We also develop a Galois theory of covering spaces for a (locally connected semilocally 1-connected) topological stack. Built into the Galois theory is a method for determining the stacky structure (i.e., inertia groups) of covering stacks. As a consequence, we get for free a characterization of topological stacks that are quotients of topological spaces by discrete group actions. For example, this give a handy characterization of good orbifolds.
Orbifolds, graphs of groups, and complexes of groups are examples of topological (Deligne-Mumford) stacks. We also show that any algebraic stack (of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$) gives rise to a topological stack. We also prove a Riemann Existence Theorem for stacks. In particular, the algebraic fundamental group of an algebraic stack over $\mathbb{C}$ is isomorphic to the profinite completion of the fundamental group of its underlying topological stack.
The next paper in the series concerns function stacks (in particular loop stacks) and fibrations of topological stacks. This is the first in a series of papers devoted to foundations of topological stacks.
A convenient bicategory of topological stacks is constructed which is both complete and Cartesian closed. This bicategory, called the bicategory of compactly generated stacks, is the analogue of classical topological stacks, but for a different Grothendieck topology. In fact, there is an equivalence of bicategories between compactly generated stacks and those classical topological stacks which admit locally compact Hausdorff atlases. Compactly generated stacks are also equivalent to a bicategory of topological groupoids and principal bundles, just as in the classical case. If a classical topol…
We prove that the mapping stack Map(Y,X) of topological stacks X and Y is again a topological stack if Y admits a compact groupoid presentation. If Y admits a locally compact groupoid presentation, we show that Map(Y,X) is a paratopological stack. In particular, it has a classifying space (hence, a natural weak homotopy type). We prove an invariance theorem which shows that the weak homotopy type of the mapping stack Map(Y,X) does not change if we replace X by its classifying space, provided that Y is paracompact topological space. As an example, we describe the loop stack of the classifying s…
We define the notion of {\em classifying space} of a topological stack and show that every topological stack \X has a classifying space X which is a topological space well-defined up to weak homotopy equivalence. Under a certain paracompactness condition on \X, we show that X is actually well-defined up to homotopy equivalence. These results are formulated in terms of functors from the category of topological stacks to the (weak) homotopy category of topological spaces. We prove similar results for (small) diagrams of topological stacks.
We extend the functor Sing of singular chains to the category of topological stacks and establish its main properties. We prove that Sing respects weak equivalences and takes a morphism of topological stacks that is both a Serre and a Reedy fibration to a Kan fibration of simplicial sets. When restricted to the category of topological spaces Sing coincides with the usual singular functor.
We prove that the Brauer group of TMF is isomorphic to the Brauer group of the derived moduli stack of elliptic curves. Then, we compute the local Brauer group, i.e., the subgroup of the Brauer group of elements trivialized by some étale cover of the moduli stack, up to a finite 2-torsion group.
Cohomology of a topological space with coefficients in stacks of abelian 2-groups is considered. A 2-categorical analog of the theorem of Grothendieck is proved, relating cohomology of the space with coefficients in a 2-stage spectrum and the Ext groups of appropriate stacks.
We study fundamental groups of algebraic stacks. We show that these fundamental groups carry an additional structure coming from the inertia groups. Then use this additional structure to analyze geometric/ topological properties of stacks. We give an explicit formula for the fundamental group of the coarse moduli space. Also, we use these additional structures to give a necessary and sufficient for an algebraic stack to be uniformizable.
The purpose of this paper is to lay the foundations of a theory of invariants in étale cohomology for smooth Artin stacks. We compute the invariants in the case of the stack of elliptic curves, and we use the theory we developed to get some results regarding Brauer groups of algebraic spaces.
For a variety over certain topological rings $R$, like $\mathbb{Z}_p$ or $\mathbb{C}$, there is a well-studied way to topologize the $R$-points on the variety. In this paper, we generalize this definition to algebraic stacks. For an algebraic stack $\mathfrak{X}$ over many topological rings $R$, we define a topology on the isomorphism classes of $R$-points of $\mathfrak{X}$. We prove expected properties of the resulting topological spaces including functoriality. Then, we extend the definition to the case when $R$ is the ring of adeles of some global field. Finally, we use this last definition…
We introduce and study the non-connective spectral stack $\mathcal M_\mathrm{FG}^\mathrm{or}$, the moduli stack of oriented formal groups. We realize some results of chromatic homotopy theory in terms of the geometry of this stack. For instance, we show that its descent spectral sequence recovers the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. For two $\mathbb E_\infty$-forms of periodic complex bordism $\mathrm{MP}$, the Thom spectrum and Snaith construction model, we describe the universal property of the cover $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathrm{MP})\to\mathcal M_\mathrm{FG}^\mathrm{or}$. We show that Quillen's ce…
For a log scheme locally of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$, a natural candidate for its profinite homotopy type is the profinite completion of its Kato-Nakayama space. Alternatively, one may consider the profinite homotopy type of the underlying topological stack of its infinite root stack. Finally, for a log scheme not necessarily over $\mathbb{C}$, another natural candidate is the profinite étale homotopy type of its infinite root stack. We prove that, for a fine saturated log scheme locally of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$, these three notions agree. In particular, we construct a comparison …
Tannaka duality and its extensions by Lurie, Schäppi et al. reveal that many schemes as well as algebraic stacks may be identified with their tensor categories of quasi-coherent sheaves. In this thesis we study constructions of cocomplete tensor categories (resp. cocontinuous tensor functors) which usually correspond to constructions of schemes (resp. their morphisms) in the case of quasi-coherent sheaves. This means to globalize the usual local-global algebraic geometry. For this we first have to develop basic commutative algebra in an arbitrary cocomplete tensor category. We then discuss ten…
In this article, we derive many properties of étale stacks in various contexts, and prove that étale stacks may be characterized categorically as those stacks that arise as prolongations of stacks on a site of spaces and local homeomorphisms. Moreover, we show that the bicategory of étale differentiable stacks and local diffeomorphisms is equivalent to the 2-topos of stacks on the site of smooth manifolds and local diffeomorphisms. An analogous statement holds for other flavors of manifolds (topological, $C^k,$ complex, super...), and topological spaces locally homeomorphic to a given space $X…
We construct a family of oriented extended topological field theories using the AKSZ construction in derived algebraic geometry, which can be viewed as an algebraic and topological version of the classical AKSZ field theories that occur in physics. These have as their targets higher categories of symplectic derived stacks, with higher morphisms given by iterated Lagrangian correspondences. We define these, as well as analogous higher categories of oriented derived stacks and iterated oriented cospans, and prove that all objects are fully dualizable. Then we set up a functorial version of the A…
We give a functorial description of the Kato-Nakayama space of a fine saturated log analytic space that is similar in spirit to the functorial description of root stacks. As a consequence we get a global description of the comparison map constructed in arXiv:1511.00037 from the Kato-Nakayama space to the (topological) infinite root stack.
The goal of this paper is to prove Riemann-Roch type theorems for Deligne-Mumford algebraic stacks. To this end, we introduce a "cohomology with coefficients in representations" and a Chern character, and we prove a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for the Riemann-Roch transformation it defines. As a corollary we obtain an Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for the Euler characteristic of a coherent sheaf, and some formulas for the different topological Euler characteristics of complex algebraic stacks.
We attempt to develop a general algebro-geometric study of the moduli stack of commutative, 1-parameter formal Lie groups. We emphasize the pro-algebraic structure of this stack: it is the inverse limit, over varying n, of moduli stacks of n-buds, and these latter stacks are algebraic. Our main results pertain to aspects of the height stratification relative to fixed prime p on the stacks of buds and formal Lie groups. We conclude with a largely expository account of some foundational material on limits in bicategories.
These are expended notes of my talk at the summer institute in algebraic geometry (Seattle, July-August 2005), whose main purpose is to present a global overview on the theory of higher and derived stacks. This text is far from being exhaustive but is intended to cover a rather large part of the subject, starting from the motivations and the foundational material, passing through some examples and basic notions, and ending with some more recent developments and open questions.
In order to prove new existence results in Brill-Noether theory for rank-2 vector bundles with fixed special determinant, we develop foundational definitions and results for limit linear series of higher-rank vector bundles. These include two entirely new constructions of "linked linear series" generalizing earlier work of the author for the classical rank-1 case, as well as a new canonical stack structure for the previously developed theory due to Eisenbud, Harris and Teixidor i Bigas. This last structure is new even in the classical rank-1 case, and yields the first proper moduli space of Ei…
The purpose of the present paper is to develop the enumerative geometry of dormant $G$-opers for a semisimple algebraic group $G$. In the present paper, we construct a compact moduli stack admitting a perfect obstruction theory by introducing the notion of a dormant faithful twisted $G$-oper (or a "$G$-do'per", for short). The resulting virtual fundamental class induces a semisimple $2$d TQFT (= $2$-dimensional topological quantum field theory) counting the number of $G$-do'pers. This $2$d TQFT gives an analogue of the Witten-Kontsevich theorem describing the intersection numbers of psi classe…

This is a continuation of our study of the foundations of D-branes from the viewpoint of Grothendieck in the region of the related Wilson's theory-space where "branes" are still branes. In this work, we focus on D-strings and construct the moduli stack of morphisms from Azumaya prestable curves $C^{Az}$ with a fundamental module ${\cal E}$ to a fixed target $Y$ of a given combinatorial type. Such a morphism gives a prototype for a Wick-rotated D-string of B-type on $Y$, following the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz, and this stack serves as a ground toward a mathematical theory of topological D…
